But what does it take to keep the
show on the road?

perfect day out.

This is Ollie The Dragon.

He's our resident hotel guest.

He's the first
impression of the park, really.

As Legoland gets ready to open,

animator Chris is
doing his daily rounds.

You're greeted by this giant dragon
who's puffing smoke.

So, he's got a big reservoir of
smoke fluid.

A mixture of water and glycerine,

the fluid is superheated to push
out smoke.

It will tend to go through
the smoke really quite quickly.

You don't him to run out.

The two main questions people ask
you when you say you're working

at Legoland is they either go,
"Do you play with Lego?"

Or, "Do you fix the rides?"

And I go,
"No, I don't do either of them.

"L fix the dragons instead."

Yep. It's all coming through nicely.

Ollie sits outside one of two hotels
located inside the park.

In total, there are over 200 themed
rooms filled with Lego models.

Cameron is managing the hotel today.

We've been up against it this
morning so I've been helping out

the restaurant team clear and relay
their tables.

We have around 500 guests or
so coming in

for breakfast this morning.

Good morning, how are you? How many
of you are there, please, together?

Six. Six. Can I sit you down at this
table here?

It looks like it's been vacated,
we're just going to clean it up.

And then the table is there, OK?
So, let me sit you down. Lovely.

We've got all of our guests here
from the hotel - both hotels -

eager to go to in the
park this morning,

and that's why breakfast is
so busy in the morning.

Pink Brick, she's very popularjust
getting the crowd excited

ready to go in this morning.

They're waiting for call from our
Lego base to make sure we're OK

to open the gates and that the rides
are ready.

Here we go!
Let me lift up the handle and...

Wrong way! It opens the other way!

Up at the main gate, excitement is
also brewing.

We're gonna go in there, and there,
and there, and that - everything!

OK. Are you guys ready?!
Welcome!

CROWD:

There are 51 rides and attractions
but the unique draw is the

thousands of Lego statues and models
spread over the 150 acre site.

Including the miniature
world of Miniland.

Across the entire park, over
90 million bricks have been used

and the numbers keep growing.

We had 48 pallets of Lego arrive
this morning at about 8.30.

The Lego bricks are destined for the
model makers' workshop.

Nikki's lucky enough to be
one of the elite model makers.

As you can see,
we've got many boxes everywhere,

absolutely full to the brim with all
different types of Lego and colours.

So, we literally have just whole big
boxes of everything.

LEGOS CLATTERING

How satisfying is that?

Upstairs beavering away in a special
workshop is a crack team

of model builders...

Look, a parrot.

Look, a soldier.

Have we got everything we need?
I don't think we do...

...all under the watchful eye of
model shop manager Paula.

The team are really talented,
it's a bit

of a mad professor workshop which is
really, really nice.

We have thousands of applicants,
as you can imagine.

So, we're very lucky
to do what we do.

Openings for these highly sought
after positions

are few and far between.

But today, a lucky new recruit is
joining the modelling team.

I was training as a teacher and in
my spare time, I am a model maker.

I saw this position open
and I thought, "Well, that sounds

"in my bracket of dream job
possibilities.

"So...why not go for it?"

Hello! Hey there, Paula.
How are you? You're all right?

Good, really good, hello. Do you
want to just put your bag down

and then l'lljust introduce you to
everyone? Indeed. So, this is April.

Pleased to meet you.

Nikki is fairly new. Hi!

So Nikki's been with us since
February, wasn't it, this year?

So, she's picked up things quite
quickly.

Yeah, we'll go through together.

Yeah, exactly!
Very good.

Pinch yourself moment, I think,
you've probably been through that.

Oh, yeah, you've got to have your
box of it.

Definitely.

Those are the golden objects,
basically.

Back in the hotel, Cameron is busy.

There's always something to do.

There's always something in the
wrong place that needs

putting back again.
There's Lego everywhere!

I am a perfectionist and it won't do
if it's not perfect.

We're going to do a Lego model
inspection of the royal family.

Could do with a bit
of dusting today.

The royal family are just one of
over 2,000 Lego models

in the hotels.

And it's Michelle's job to ensure
that they stay spick-and-span.

Good afternoon, housekeeping.

Michelle comes armed with all of her
unique tools of the trade.

Very sophisticated dish brush.

I then have a very posh, wonderful
nylon tipped automated brush

which does the bigger
parts of Lego.

And then the best tool
I own is my toothbrush.

And as monotonous as that is,
it needs to go into all the tiny,

tiny little bits here.

There's no way anything else is
going to get in there.

And a bucket of hot soapy water.

My colleagues and friends think that
I'm absolutely crazy

because I actually enjoy cleaning
the Lego and making it look nice.

Some boys and girls are very
fascinated that I'm cleaning

Lego with a toothbrush.

And some mums and dads ask me for
tips on how

to clean their
Lego models at home as well.

My top tips for cleaning Lego are
warm water, not too much soap,

and a really good toothbrush.

Oh, this job is
like the Forth Bridge.

You literally start one end of the
hotel and you finish the other end

and it's time to start again.

In the heart of the park,

Miniland is a miniature world with
representations of 12 countries,

spread over four continents,
made out of 45 million bricks.

And Will already has his first
assignment for it.

I would say that was quite a good
representation of me.

I might add some little details
on the hair though,

just to add to my usual look,
if I've got any.

Although all the models in the park
are created using exactly

the same bricks as you can use at
home, the addition of a bit of glue

helps to protect them against the
elements - and little fingers.

These are the kind of things that
I'd want to add in just

to make the person unique, really.

But we do...

Hopefully, this pays off.

It is mini-me. It's Mini-Will.

Mooching about, yeah.

When you walk through the model
makers workshop,

kind of a mixture between
two things.

It's kind of like an engineers
shop, like proper workshop,

but it's also kind of like a toy
shop at the same time.

It just takes me back to the feeling
I wished for as a child

to come and work with Lego.

A ride is evacuated...

We're going to take every single
guest off this right now.

And as heat rises in the park, so do
tempers.

Today is one of the hottest
clays of the year in the UK,

and already the crowds are gathering
at the Windsor theme park.

We're expecting to be quite busy
especially with the lovely weather.

I have to get the traffic moving as
quickly as possible.

They like to arrive early as well.

Do you guys want to come down
and go down that lane?

With temperatures hitting 30
degrees, most of the crowd

streaming in today are heading
straight for the water rides.

Can I help you?

Is this for wearing now?

In Duplo Valley, Gail's till is
ringing red-hot.

If it's raining, they all come in
for the ponchos.

If it's hot, they all

Over at the workshop, new boy Will

and fellow model maker April are
about to head out into the park.

Today, we're going to be replacing
Buckingham Palace's fence

in Miniland of course.

These were built by a past
model maker.

The gates were completed by one of
Will's predecessors.

But it's now up to him and April

to reconstruct them
in one of Miniland's prime sites.

This is my first installation
of anything.

I've heard that it doesn't always go
to plan.

Is this is what we ordered?

Yeah, this is it. It's fresh!

Look at that, fresh out of the oven!

So, when we install a model, you're
a little bit worried cos you're

kind of thinking,
"Oh, is it going to survive?"

What's going to break on it?

I can see London on the horizon.

If you ever need a swap over at any
point, let me know.

Yeah, it's a two-man job -
er, a two-person job.

OK, and we have arrived.

It's getting hotter and the extreme
temperatures are starting

to have an impact on the rides.

Soon as we go over 30 degrees,
we've got to do track inspections.

Sam from rides maintenance has had
to stop the Legoland Express train.

Historically, when it heats up,

some of the joints can buckle out
which causes a train to derail.

Previously,
it's derailed on a corner.

It's a popular ride with
younger children.

So, Sam needs to avoid this
happening again.

This is a sort of area where we want
to look for any buckling

cos it's red-hot around here.

Especially on the corners out there.

Yeah, or actually we could put them
in the grass, couldn't we?

Yeah, just... Back at the Palace,
the gates are about to be replaced.

Probably need to remove all the
figures over there.

Yeah - first task figures, then,
yeah?

We're sort of abducting them.

We're basically following this map
and on it, it is numbered from 1-34.

I'm guessing number one is one of
these long ones.

The original model maker left
instructions on how

to put the gates together.

So, this is like a massive puzzle.

Back on the tracks,

Sam and Trevor are checking they
haven't expanded in the heat.

and they've got a problem.

I mean, the day-to-day job

You don't really know
what you're going to come into.

So, sometimes, I'll come in to the
mother of all breakdowns

and it's something to get
stuck into.

And then other days, it could be
anything, really.

The trains may be back on track but
there's bad news for those

wanting to cool down in one of the
most popular water rides.

So, we're just heading down to
our Viking river rapids right now,

it's just been called through as
having a breakdown.

The Viking River Splash ride has
come to a sudden halt

with over 100 people on board.

Safety is paramount,
especially on rides involving water.

So Duty Manager Lee needs to find
out what's going on.

We have made the decision that we're
going to evacuate the guests

off the ride so we can check it and
find out what's happened.

Hello. Hello there.

So, can you just talk me through
what's happened

and what we're going to do?
OK, so it was due to a guest action.

Someone was in a restricted area so
we've done "stop-stop-stop" procedure.

OK. And now we are literally just
going to get

the guests off safely as we can.

OK, we're going to take every single
guest off this ride now? Yes.

Due to a guest action? Due to a
guest action. That's a real shame.

A member of the public
was spotted trespassing

in a danger area near the water.

So, the team had no option but to
press the emergency stop button.

We're going to clear the queue line

and they can do it another day or on
another...

Are we giving the guests that
have queued

but are not going to get on the
ride, are we going to give them...?

...priority passes? Priority passes, yes. So
they can enjoy another ride on us. Wonderful.

Everyone in the boats and queue will
get fast passes

to go on another ride.

OK, sorry about that guys. OK.

So, they'll hopefully be able to
continue to enjoy the park.

But on hot busy clays, it's not
always easy keeping everybody happy.

Guest services deal with complaints.

We'll go and see what we can do from
here, is that OK with you? Yeah.

Again, this is not really
acceptable.

One person on guest services, this
is not acceptable to start with.

There is someone else.

They're dealing with another
situation, that's why.

The guest's issue is with the
fast-track system used

for skipping the queues on rides.

I don't agree that, we're standing
there, if there's ten that just

walk literally up, they put all
them ten on. That's not acceptable.

You filter them through the queued
up guests,

you don't take the whole ten people.

Yeah, they should be filtered a
little bit more, yeah.

Back at Viking River Splash with
evacuation almost completed,

the maintenance team can take over.
What was the issue? E-stopped.

E-stop. All right.

Do you know what it was e-stopped?

Have they cleared the guest that
was down there?

Yeah, they're just off-loading
the last boat now.

So, if you'd keep an eye out
around there.

Just make sure that it
is definitely clear.

And after a quick check that
no-one's in the danger areas...

Yeah, we're just restarting it now.

This is the trickiest bit for us

cos there's a queue of quite
a few boats.

Once they've completed a full cycle,
those who've been patiently waiting

outside are allowed back in so they
can enjoy the cooling water ride.

Job done other than the paperwork!

Back in the relative
calm of Miniland,

Will and April are still battling
with the Queen's Gates.

I've had a little check actually
through the windows.

I see the Queen is
in, erm, currently.

First aid rushes to the scene.

That's not good, is it?

Model maker Nikki does some
emergency dentistry.

I fixed a hippo.

LAUGHING: How many people can
say that?

And someone small loses their
bearings.

The park is waking up to a new day
but before the rides can open to the

public in three hours' time, there
is lots of preparation to be done.

So, we've got our little short cuts
everywhere, really.

Instead of walking all the way up
the zig-zag hill,

we go that way cos it's
a lot quicker.

Chris is one of the newest members
of the animation team.

So, we work together to fix all the
things that should be moving,

should be making sound.

Always love to tinker with special
effects and robotics,

and this is like a
hobby to me, really.

I get paid to do a hobby at work.

On his to-do list today is
a repair on one of the water rides.

So, over at Pirate Falls
we've had an e-mail saying

guests are complaining about getting
too wet on the ride.

Hello, hello, hello. Hello!

How are you? I'm all right.

Glad you brought the truck
so I can dump this in.

You ready to get wet?

Chris has been at the park since it
opened over 20 years ago.

The uniqueness of the job role
brought me here.

It was not something you could
say everybody did.

When I say, "l work at the models
and animation department,"

the reaction people give - "You've
got the coolest job in the world!"

It's, like, "Yeah...

"Yeah, definitely."

ON SPEAKER:

If you could lift it up so it flies
higher so they can't reach it

unless they put their hands up,
and prop some rocks underneath it.

Do you want to second rock?

Hitting the wall. Honestly, it's
fine. It's not hitting the people.

The water cannon isn't the only
animation drenching the guests.

We're probably about 5-10 minutes.

I think that's as good as we're
going to get it.

That will have to do for today as
they run out of time

before Ride Maintenance do their
morning checks.

Tony's one of their engineers who
keep Legoland running 24/7.

This is our Legoland stores.

This is where we come
to mend all of our rides.

All the spares should be in here.

All categorised into
different areas.

So, for instance, this one, this
would be the belts that drive

the pumps on Fairy Tale Brook.

These are running wheels
for the Dragon.

Power pack for the helicopter ride.

And they would control the
hydraulics,

so it can go up and down.

This is our Hill Train spares.

This would be the brakes
at the bottom of the train.

In an emergency, these would drop,

hit the rail and stop the train.

We can fix all the rides from here.

It would have to be quite
exceptional

not to be able to fix it.

This is all our nuts and bolts
spares...

...and up the top.

So, we've have got plenty there
to choose from.

So, if you drop one in the water,
you can still fix the ride.

We've got lots of different skills
here, which is good.

We've got welders,
we've got electricians,

we've got fitters, turners,
millers...

So, altogether, really, as a team,

we can manage to fix most things.

Every morning, every ride is
inspected by Ride Maintenance.

Once safety checks are complete,
the park can open.

With the rides up and running

and the first customers enjoying
the park,

it's not long before first-aider
Sam gets an urgent call-out.

We're here to treat
whatever comes along.

We need little blue lights
on our hats or something!

A young child has apparently
tripped or slipped

and has a cut to their knee.

It might be a bit deep, apparently,

so we're just going up there to make
sure everything's all right.

And if we can treat them
on the scene

and send them back into the park to
enjoy their day, then we'll do that.

Hi there, guys, how can I help?

That's not good, is it?

OK, what's your name, buddy? Jake.

Jake? My name's Sam, Jake.

I know it's outside,
can we maybe go to the bench,

just because it's a bit lower down
for treatment. ls that all right?

Would you be able to carry him?

I'm just going to irrigate
this gently.

Just because I want to make
sure there's no dirt in there.

Yeah!

That's a good thing, isn't it?

I would like to send this
to an urgent care centre,

just because of how open it is.

It is a little bit deep in places -
there's infection, obviously.

I want to get him to someone who can
give him some antibiotics

or something just to potentially
keep on that.

Across the park, behind the scenes
at the Rides Maintenance workshop,

they're also making repairs.

You all right, Sam?

What's going on, then?

Let's hope it's
not as bad as yesterday.

They sure had quite a few
breakdowns yesterday.

The best way to explain our
workshop is organised chaos.

It has been referred to by a lot
of people as the "Man Cave".

A lot of the other staff around
the park seem to think

they never see us
and we just dwell in our cave.

But a lot of work goes on in there.

At peak times of the year,
it's a full-on job

making sure that all the rides
are working at optimum capacity.

So, the Viking River Splash
is one of our big water rides.

Because we've got big
inflatable tubes,

sometimes they get punctured
or damaged.

These little shackles here
that whole the rope to the boat

have broken away,
so, now, that's a safety issue

and we've got to change the tyre.

Even one boat out of action
can have a huge impact

on queue waiting times.

We'll change the tube on it
in the yard

and we'll basically
drop it back in.

These gigantic tyres keep
the half-tonne boats afloat

and act as a cushion on the ride.

In order to stay in place,
they have to be a good, snug fit.

Bit of washing-up liquid
never goes amiss.

A bit of lubricant. Yeah, we just
rub it around the edge here...

...and it should slide
in a bit better.

The valves are red-hot.

All the way down.

That's it.

That's it!

It's all good here.
Yeah, it's all properly seated.

The fixed boat will be put back in
tonight. It's a delicate business.

That'll be interesting. Tony's
first time, as well. So, we'll see.

I'm sure he'll be all right.

The park's now
reaching its full capacity,

and the First Aid Centre
is getting busier.

Inside here there's a little,
what feels like a little balloon.

You give that a hard squeeze.

Once it pops, you give it a shake,
put it on.

Michael is in charge today.

Some days we have nothing,
and then come some days,

it just gets very out of control.

Lots of things happen.

It always comes in waves.

Long stretches of sheer boredom,

punctuated by moments
of absolute terror.

He got stung
on the inside of his lip?

Yeah, he was drinking
his Slush Puppie,

and then it just must have flown up
to him all of a sudden

and just stung him,
just on the lip. Oh!

Wasp stings are a common
occurrence in summer.

We're going to give you another
pack to go with you guys

out back into the park.

So, once that pack warms up,
if the swelling's still there,

you just give it a pop
and apply the new pack onto it,

just to help with the swelling.

Do you feel better? Yeah?

It is his first sting.
He will be OK.

He might be a little bit miserable,

but it's... It's the way
of the beast, unfortunately.

How brave, out of ten?

Eight? Oh, I reckon
I'd give him a nine or ten.

He was only crying
for about five minutes.

Away from public gaze,

model-maker Nicki is revamping

some of the park's largest
safari animals.

Before I worked here at Legoland,
my last job,

I worked as a veterinary nurse
assistant,

so very different to this.

It was pretty much
all cats and dogs,

so, all kind of
relatively small things.

We've got a few dogs
dotted around the resort.

So, I give them a little pat on the
head as I fix them and clean them.

But they can't bite.

At the minute,

they're trying to rejuvenate
the pond area by the hoteL

These three hippos,
they got taken out,

I think it was about two weeks ago.

These are quite old models because
they've been out in the water,

they get a bit of timescale
and things on them.

I came out and jet-washed them.

So, now, we can kind of see their
true colours. So, yeah,

just giving them an extra little
spruce, fixing what we can.

Actually, I think that is
pretty spot-on,

so I'm going to glue that in.

As they're outside,
these models need to be glued

to offer added protection
against a British weather.

He's at least got nearly
a full set of chompers.

It gives you a good story to go
home with, you know,

when everyone's exchanging,
"How did your day go?"

"Well, I fixed a hippo."

How many people can say that?!

It's now mid-afternoon
and over in First Aid,

they're not only dealing with
medical issues.

It happens very frequently
that children get lost.

It's a big park,
there's a lot of people in it,

they get turned around. The parents
go left, the children go right.

Any lost child found by a staff
member

is immediately sent to First Aid.

Hello. Hello. You're lost?

All right. No problem.

So, what I'm going to do
is I'm going to put in a call,

and if anybody finds them,
they'll send them down to us.

OK? In there, we've got a nice
little room just for you.

We've got The Lego Movie busy
going on in here.

They come up feeling very anxious
and sad,

because, obviously,
they've just lost their parents.

After I'm talking to them and
reassuring them

and introducing them to the toys -

it's a distraction more
than anything. And we wait.

Coming up, Tony's under pressure...

The biggest pressure
is transporting models.

...and Will presents
his big idea to Paula.

OK, yeah, yeah.

Jessica is waiting for her parents
to find her in First Aid.

She's lost.

We have had instances where the
child has sat for a long time,

a good two, three hours. When we
finally get hold of the parents,

the parents were unaware that the
children were here.

They thought they were just out
having fun in the park.

Thank you.

But, fortunately,
it's not a long wait this time.

Aww.

Mm-hm.

I've missed you.

You ain't going to do this again,
are you?

When they are reunited,

the parents and the children
are both extremely grateful.

Well, doing this job is very
rewarding and it's something

that I seek personally and that's
why I like First Aid so much.

As Jessica and her family join other
guests starting to head home,

Tom from Ground Operations
is getting creative.

So, we'lljust make a nice
message, "Bye!",

and then, I think, we'll do
a Lego minifigure, as well.

I have started doing this,
now, for two months.

In our department,
we clean up a lot,

and so, I see a lot of spillages,
so, really,

all this was was a bottle of water
had fallen over,

and, usually, we just sweep it up
with our brushes. So, I thought,

"Oh, l'lljust make a smiley face
out of it, why not?"

And then, it kind of grew
from there.

You think it's really simple,
but, actually,

drawing one out of water
tends to have its challenges.

And the final touch.

And there you go.

As you can see, people just
like looking at the drawing itself

and the inventiveness of it,
I like to think.

It's already starting
to evaporate and go.

That's the nature of it, I think.

It's only there for a couple
of seconds for the guys to see

and then everyone
carries on with their day.

But it's not
the end of the day for everyone.

Mick, Tony and Sam are over
at the Viking River Splash ride.

When the park actually closes,
we try and fit in maintenance work.

We can be here quite
late into the night.

They're putting back the boat they
repaired in the yard earlier today.

It's Tony's first time
operating the forklift

and, as the light starts to go,
he'll be doing this blind.

I need other people to tell me
exactly when to stop,

when to lower, when to go out,
went to boom in, when to boom out.

I'm reliant, totally,
solely, on the other engineers.

Tell me, Mick!

OK.

Mick is acting as Tony's eyes
at the top, while Sam is down below.

All right, if you just reverse
towards the boat, Tony,

then you can get it in one spin.

after 150 acres,

from woods and hedgerows,

to the manicured, miniature trees
in Miniland.

Whenever we set up to do a big
job like this in the morning,

the biggest pressure is,
you know, transporting models

and trying to get into the park
before the park opens.

Made out of nearly
5,000 bricks each,

the fragile models
took two months to build.

This is the final stage
of the process,

so, I really don't want to
damage the models.

Yeah, the work and the attention
to detail the model department done,

I don't want to, then, personally,
do anything to ruin that.

The hippos are headed
to the lake by the hotel.

Can you just clear that round

Just chuck it up here
and I'll put it away.

Sam and Dylan have
been preparing the ground

for their new watering hole.

I just think it will look amazing

once we got all the plants in and
the hippos. lt'lljust look fab.

While Dom drives
the hippos over,

Paula and Nicki have taken a
short cut to the lake.

But Dom has some bad news.

Unfortunately, on the transport,

the hippo's ear
has got knocked off.

Urn... Oh, I see, OK.

The advantage of having model-makers
on site is that I'm sure

they're going to do a quick repair
job, get that all sorted out,

nobody would be none the wiser.

So, what we're going to do,
we're just going to...

I know we can manually
handle these in,

but we're going to lift them over
just to reduce the risk

of hurting ourselves and then
sort of move them where we need to.

He's only just started,

but model-makers are expected
to come up with their own designs.

Definitely, I've got a few ideas.

I mean, sometimes, we can be really
a bit cheeky with certain things,

so, you know, we've got a guy
at the back of the Louvre area

trying to take the Mona Lisa.

You know, that's the sort of thing
that guests can spot

if they're coming round.

That's what we want to do is add
really good sense of humour.

I had a quite nice little idea down
at 10, Downing Street. Yes, yeah?

Often you see a little cat,
Larry the cat.

So, I was thinking, those sorts
of things were what I was thinking

to bring something to the scene
a little bit more.

And, also, I wanted to show you

that I've kind of come up with...

...a thought to do William
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

OK, yeah, yeah. But I don't know
if that's possible.

I think we would have to sort of

look at the scale of St Paul's
and Big Ben and see if

we can scale it around it, so it
looks as if it's part of it.

We don't want it too big
or too small

cos it's going to look really
odd otherwise.

I think it's a really good one
to put in. It definitely is.

He's got a bit of a big challenge.

I think he's got some amazing ideas.

I'm looking at it
from an old pair of eyes

and he's looking at it from a fresh
pair of eyes, which is really nice.

The heart of Legoland is,
obviously, Miniland,

so, to get in amongst it all

and kind of actually put my ideas
onto a canvas

that the world is going to see

is just an incredible opportunity,
really.
