Fordecades, theIndianActhaspresented
oneofthemostcomplex problemsinCanadianpolitics.
Apieceofraciallegislation originallymeanttodestroy
theindependence andculturalidentity
ofFirstNationspeoples,
itisalsooneof thefewdocumentsthat
enshrinestraditionalrights.
Luckily,aswithallother indigenousissues,
theTrudeaugovernment hascomealong
andfixedtheentirething.
OurownMarillaWexreports.
Inadeftpoliticalstroke, theTrudeaugovernment
hasfoundaway tokeeptheIndianAct
whilealsomaintaining Canada'scredentials
asanation withracialequality.
They'vedeveloped apieceoflegislation
liketheIndianAct,
foreverysingleother raceandethnicity.
Sincetakingoffice,
thegovernment hascreatedstatutes
liketheCraftyJewAct, theFieryLatinoAct,
andthe(WHISPERING) BlackPeopleAct.
I'mnotjustsayingit likethat,
thatistheofficialname ofthedocument.
EverybodyinCanadaisequal,
regardlessofwhether thegovernment
tookyourchildrenfromyou,
orgaveyourland toaminingconsortium.
AsaJewishperson,
whatcanIexpect fromtheCraftyJewAct?
Well,likewith theIndianAct,

That'sthelegalterm...
Andyou'llbeissuedacard identifyingyouasaJew.
Isuspectthatwillmake mostJewishpeople
extremelyuncomfortable.
Uh,yeah,Iguess.
LikeintheIndianAct, everyonewillnowbegranted
accesstodesignated socialservices
basedon whetherornottheyqualify
forso-called"status."
Toexplainhowitworks,
thegovernment producedthisvideo.
PHILPAULSON:Notsofast
withthatdelectable gabagool,Vinny.
Didyouknow youmightnotbeItalian?

yourparents, andyourgrandparents
wereallraisedItalian,
oneofyourgreat-grandparents wasDutch,
andtwoofthemwereborn ontheFrenchborder.
-So? -So,liketheIndianAct,
theStinkin'ItalianActsays
thatyoucan'thave Italianstatus
unlessyouhave onefullItalianparent,
ortwohalfsies. Solegally,you'renothing.
Theninafewgenerations, nobody'sgonnabeItalian?
Exactly.Andoncenobody islegallyItalian,
LittleItalywillrevert tothegovernment,
andwecanfinally sellthelandit'sbuilton
toanaturalgascompany.
-(SPEAKINGITALIAN) -(LAUGHS)
Careful.Now, ifyou'renotItalian,
thenwhatrightdoyou havetobeCatholic?
Thisnewpolicy isnotwithoutitsproblems.

Okay,now, what'sthebenefitofthat?
Teamunity?Trust?
Noman,youjustget tohaveacirclejerk.
Well,Iguess themainpointhereis,
wewishourboyswell.
Bringhomethegold andmaybeyou'llgetgirls

Uh,nogirls inthecirclejerk.

It'saclearmessage toplayersthat,
ifthey'regoingtobe involvedinabhorrent

theybettermakesure tomaketheProBowl.
Theleaguewillnolonger toleratethiskindofbehavior

Turningtohealthcare,
moreCanadiansthanever arebeingdiagnosed
withmentalillness.
Yet,fundingforcare continuestoplummet.
Joiningusliveviasatellite todiscusshowHealthCanada

ishealthcareconsultant, JamesLillian.
Thanksforhavingme.
Doesthegovernment haveaplantoaddress
thementalhealth-carecrisis inourcountry,James?
Absolutely.Ournewprogram isgoingtodramaticallylower
ratesofmentalillness inCanada,
byreclassifying anumberofconditionsas
"delightfuleccentricities."
Doesthatmean theywon'tgettreatment?
Theywon'tneedtreatment.
Underthenew diagnosticguidelines,
sufferersofchronicanxiety
willnowbeconsidered "worrywarts."
Obsessive-compulsives willbe"TidyTerrys,"
andthosesufferingfrom whatusedtobecalled
clinicaldepression, willnowjustbedealingwith
"aprolongedcase oftheMondays."
Isn'tthisjustaform ofdiagnosticwhitewashing?
Look,arewecynically usingsemantics
toshirk ourresponsibilities?Sure.
Arewewalkingaway frompeoplewhoneedus?
Absolutely.
Howmuchmoney isthisgoingtosaveus?
Tons.
Doesn'tourmedical communityhaveaduty

Butdon'tyousee?
Havingfewerpatients willallowfacilities
tobetterallocate theirexistingresources
withouthaving tospendadime.
That'stheentirepurpose ofsingle-payerhealthcare.
Butwhataboutthepeople whogetturnedaway?
Won'twehavemorepeople slippingthroughthecracks?

asthequirkyaunts, complexartists,freespirits,
andmathematicalgeniuses
thatmakelifeso unpredictablywhimsical.
So,ifyouseeone onthestreet,
andyouwillseethem onthestreet,
-makesureyousay"hi." -Ormaybelendahelpinghand?
Whateverfloatsyourboat.
They'reyourproblem now,society!
Thanks,James.
It'sgreattoknow someone'sdoingtheirpart,
evenifthatperson isnotyou.
Beforeweleavetonight,
we'dliketopaytribute tooneofourcrewmembers.
Todayisthelastday foroneofourcameramen,
whoIamverycloseto.
We'reverycloseto.
Oh,Ididn'tknow youguysweretight?
Oh,yeah.Yeah. Whoeverpicksupcamerathree
isgonnahave bigshoestofill.
It'scameratwo.
Yep...Yep...
Thepointisthat I'mveryclose
withtheretiringcameraman.
So...It'snotabigdeal.
Okay,then,maybeyou'dlike tosendhimoff,Miguel.
Sure.Yeah,ofcourse.
Onbehalfofthestaff hereatTheBeaverton,
I'dlike topersonallythank...
Themanofthehour,um...
Healwaysshowsup toworkfully-clothed.
Yes.
He'sabigfanoflunch. Andhisnameis...
-Is... -Gravid...
-HisnameisOwen. -Owen!Owen.
Youdon'tknowasingle crew-member'sname,
doyou,Miguel?
Well,I'msorry
theonecrewmember youknowisleaving.
I'dalsoliketothank therestofthecrew.
Henry,I'mthinkingaboutyou.
Sadie,um, Jo-Jowiththemakeup,
welookamazing becauseofyou.
Naira,thankyou.
Deanne,you're40, that'scrazy.
TheBear,withthepipes! AndTinyEliot.
Honestly,Ilove youguyssomuch...
Yeah,metoo!
Well,maybenotlove,because thatwouldbeinappropriate.
Goodnight,everyone!
