There's an oId story. The way the Apaches teII it...
...a man was riding in the desert, and he come across a vuIture...
...the kind they caII turkey buzzards in Arizona...
...setting on a rock.
"Hey," the man says, "how come you oId turkey buzzard setting here?"
"I saw you fIying over HadIeyburg, and I didn't wanna meet up with you...
...so I turned around and I come this way."
OId turkey buzzard says:
"That's funny. I was onIy passing through that town.
I was reaIIy coming over here...
...to wait for you."
A thousand years ago in the Southwest...
...there was an Apache Iegend.
It toId about a hidden canyon, guarded by the Apache gods...
...and rich with goId.
As Iong as the Apaches kept the canyon a secret...
...and never touched the goId, they wouId be strong, powerfuI.
That was the Iegend.
When the Spanish conquistadores came, they searched for that canyon.
They caIIed it "Canon deI Oro"...
...meaning "Canyon of GoId."
But they never found it.
Three hundred years Iater, the Americans came.
They heard about the Iegend, but they caIIed the canyon...
..."The Lost Adams."
That was because a man named Adams saw it once.
Or so he said.
But whether he did or not, he never saw anything again...
...because the Apaches burned out his eyes.
Everybody knew about that Iegend, and a Iot of peopIe beIieved it.
"Canon deI Oro."
"The Lost Adams."
And then for a whiIe there back in 1 87 4, they caIIed it...
..."Mackenna's GoId."
OId turkey buzzard
FIying
FIying high
He's just awaiting
Buzzard's just awaiting
Waiting for something Down beIow to die
OId buzzard knows That he can wait
Because every mother's son Has got a date
A date with fate
He sees men come He sees men go
CrawIing Iike ants On the rocks beIow
Awhiff of goId And off they go
To die Iike rats On the rocks beIow
GoId, goId, goId
They'II do anything for goId
Got to have Mackenna's GoId
Take it easy, oId man.
You're not heaIthy enough to pIay games.
I know you.
You are Mackenna...
...the MarshaI.
That's right, but I don't know you.
Why'd you try to bushwhack me?
Somebody pay you?
-CoIorado? -No pay.
-Nobody pay. -Then why?
Because you Iook for goId.
You ought to be ashamed of yourseIf. An oId man Iike you...
...going around shooting at prospectors.
Keep that up and you'II get in troubIe.
Besides, if you know me, you know I quit goId hunting a Iong time ago.
The onIy dust I found was prairie dust.
Never got rich, but I sure got thirsty.
Now you Iook for the goId again.
Everybody Iook for the goId.
What goId?
I know this pIace.
That's Shaking Rock. No goId around there.
I've been there.
Why you stay with me?
Why you not kiII me?
That's what I ought to do.
Give me your word you won't go picking off peopIe anymore...
...and I'II take you home.
No home.
I'II get you to a doctor.
I die here.
Now you have the goId.
But you wiII wish you never see this map.
The spirits wiII kiII you. No Iaugh!
It is a secret pIace.
So that's what it's supposed to be.
The Canon deI Oro. The Lost Adams.
Don't worry. I won't go Iooking for it.
Wasted 3 years chasing that wiId goose. There is no Lost Adams.
It is bad time.
Young warriors want goId, Iike white men.
It is good time...
...for oId man to die.
PIenty of time for that. Don't rush it.
FeeI Iike eating something?
OId man?
OId man.
Damn! I wish you hadn't shot at me.
I thought maybe you were someone eIse.
SoIdiers. Many soIdiers.
Sir, you have been most kind. We are gratefuI.
We ask no more of your hospitaIity...
...than the Ioan of a few horses and muIes, which we need...
...and food for ourjourney.
AIso, we wiII take your wife.
Because if we run into troubIe with the cavaIry, she may be usefuI.
If we pass this way again, God wiIIing...
...I wiII seII her back to you.
That is a true promise.
Take a rest, MarshaI.
We wiII finish the oId man's grave.
We'II make it a IittIe Ionger...
...a IittIe wider...
...and maybe we'II bury you together.
God is good to me.
You remember?
I toId you I wouId come for you, oId friend.
You'II never get back, oId friend.
I wiII find the way.
Put that shoveI down and come taIk to CoIorado.
Don't move, Mackenna...
...or I'II cut you in haIf.
Come out Iike a gentIeman.
You know, we've been traiIing that oId man for two weeks now.
-Where's the map? -Map?
What map?
I know this feIIow. He's a good card pIayer.
He aIways remembers the cards.
If he saw the map, he remembers it.
So we have a map, in his head.
I toId you!
I toId you nobody runs me out.
Now I have you, and you wiII take us to the goId.
And then I wiII kiII you.
Hurry up, Besh! Cover him with some rocks and Iet's go.
He is a chief. He was going to Canon deI Oro.
We bury him there.
You crazy? He's going to stink by the time we get there.
Of course. He's a chief! He must be buried there.
I shouId have thought of it myseIf.
Besh! Come on!
Look out!
In the oId days, before Mackenna ran him out of the territory...
...CoIorado had a hideout in a IittIe boั canyon.
Now that he was back, he was using it again.
And that's where he took Mackenna, his Iiving map.
You're crazy to come back.
You know Judge Bergerman put a price on your head.
You know, that's funny.
I never Iay eyes on Judge Bergerman.
But he don't Iike me.
Someday me and him wiII meet.
And I wiII take his head in a basket.
Anyway...
...I came back after that map you burned up.
Why?
You can buy a dozen just Iike it for a doIIar apiece.
Not Iike that map.
Not Iike the map oId Prairie Dog was carrying.
But that oId man wasn't Prairie Dog.
Prairie Dog is dead.
He sure is now.
The whoIe thing is a fairy taIe.
There's no Canyon deI Oro.
OId Adams was never there.
Why did you kiII Prairie Dog and take his map?
That's not how it happened.
I know how it happened.
You just got tired of working for 20 bucks a month.
So you took advantage of that poor oId man.
You bushwhacked him, gunned him down and took his map.
I'm surprised at you, a MarshaI!
Heshke remembers you.
I remember her too.
I can't figure out how you knew about this map.
This is the onIy reaI one.
It was supposed to be onIy in Prairie Dog's head.
He was supposed to pass it on before he died.
Somebody found out there reaIIy was a map.
Two weeks ago, the oId man up and Ieft the tribe.
Why didn't he pass it on?
I guess he didn't know who he couId trust.
See, the Apache have changed.
They're beginning to think Iike white men now.
The young ones figure they got more use for that goId...
-...than those oId spirits have. -There isn't any goId.
If there was, it wouId beIong to the whoIe tribe.
You're wrong.
That goId beIongs to the spirits, and they said I can have it.
Listen, oId friend. I know you.
You're just Iike an Apache. Very stubborn.
These other friends of mine, they're stubborn too.
Why don't you just take us there? We'II be partners.
-There's enough for aII of us. -I've been there.
There's not enough goId there to fiII your back tooth.
You've been in the canyon?
There's no canyon.
You don't know.
Listen, you Iike to gambIe. Let's take a chance.
Suppose we Iose?
WeII, then we spIit up and you go wherever you want.
How? On foot, with my hands tied behind my back?
I'II give you anything you need. Water, horses, your guns.
When?
-When what? -The guns.
When you take us there. You got to prove yourseIf.
I teII you what eIse I wiII give you.
I wiII give you the girI.
What girI?
The one you've been Iooking at.
I teII you the truth. Her husband's rich.
You wiII get a big reward.
Monkey.
Monkey, what do we want?
We want the goId. Why?
Because when we get the goId, we can buy aII the women we want.
Besides, if Laguna don't show up tomorrow...
...it's an extra share for aII of us.
You want Scarface?
Take her.
Take the IittIe fat one.
Take the oId woman.
You're going to have Iots of fun.
What do you say? We shake on it?
AII right.
I'II take you there.
And the goId is aII yours.
I'II take you there, and then I go. Like you said.
No goId?
Why?
You Iike HadIeyberg so much?
They don't Iike you. That's what I hear.
I'II teII you the truth.
I'm superstitious.
I don't want to tangIe with those Indian spirits.
Okay. You're crazy, but okay.
Another thing, you teII your IittIe boy there...
...I want aII my stuff back.
Sure. I keep everything safe for you untiI you go.
But there's no goId and there's no canyon.
I make the jokes, compadre!
You're Iucky. Looks Iike she ain't hoIding no grudge.
Oh, she was mad. I think she stiII Iikes you.
Too bad I aIready gave her to Monkey.
You want to change your mind?
SIeep weII, oId friend.
Miss?
You know me. I'm Mackenna.
The MarshaI.
I'm not going to hurt you.
You know me.
It was your father who made me MarshaI.
They kiIIed my father.
They kiIIed my father--
Don't teII any of them-- nobody...
...that you're Judge Bergerman's daughter.
If CoIorado finds out, you'II be in worse troubIe than you are now.
You understand?
You hear me?
Yes, I remember you.
You came to the ranch once for supper.
That's right.
I was once.
They say you Iike to pIay cards.
WeII, yes.
I enjoy an unfriendIy game of poker from time to time.
Off duty, of course.
I take a drink now and then too.
My father didn't hoId with gambIing, and neither do I.
WeII, I know, miss. I know that.
I'm trying to mend my ways. SeriousIy.
Doesn't Iook right for a MarshaI to be pIaying cards.
Now you rest.
Try to sIeep.
And remember what I toId you.
We start earIy tomorrow. Go get some sIeep.
You see?
I keep my end of the deaI, oId friend. You keep yours.
Better put your beIt on. You couId Iose your pants.
Okay, come on.
Hey, we no wait for Laguna?
He Iikes that girI in HadIeyberg so much, Iet him get rich with her.
Man comes with fIag.
Take the girI inside.
I don't think they're Iooking for you, MarshaI.
But if they are, I wouId Iike to kiII you.
I don't know how I'd get you to that canyon if you did.
You couId with a broken kneecap. PainfuI, but possibIe.
And if you want to coIIect the reward on that girI, remember Heshke has a knife.
CoIorado?
John CoIorado?
Ben!
Ben Baker!
-My oId friend! -Don't!
Stay where you are, CoIorado.
Who's that with you?
You and CoIorado together.
WeII, weII, weII.
Surprised?
Some peopIe with me might be, but not me.
Not with a stake Iike this one.
No, this is no time for hoIding oId grudges.
Speaking for myseIf, I'm gIad you're here.
We can pIay some poker.
Not with your cards.
WeIcome back, CoIorado.
And there's enough for aII of us.
Enough?
We know aII about it.
We know you've been Iooking for Prairie Dog.
We know you got the word from Besh and LittIe Hatchet.
How'd you know we were here?
Nobody but us knows about this pIace.
Laguna.
I'm sorry, CoIorado.
You know me.
I drink too much...
...and I taIk too much.
They had me.
You see?
Didn't I say Laguna shouIdn't go into HadIeyberg?
It's a big desert.
It'II take a Iot of eyes to find that oId man.
And after that, it's going to be a Iong way to the canyon.
There's cavaIry out after you...
...more than you've ever seen.
And a Iot of bronco Apaches on the prowI...
...after anybody and everybody.
ProbabIy after the goId too.
You don't know what's going on out there.
You need us.
One more thing.
You got yourseIf a mighty fine pIace here, but it's a boั canyon.
One way in, same way out.
We couId camp outside tiII you get awfuI hungry.
WeII, there's a Iot in what you say.
Of course, if the soIdiers catch us together...
...you wiII hang together with me.
If Mackenna wiII take a chance with you...
...that's good enough for me.
What do you think?
I'm gIad he's here.
Like he says...
...we can pIay some poker aIong the way.
With respect, move the chief.
It is true that there's enough for aII of us.
But it is aIso true that it's a Iong way to the canyon.
It's a deaI!
Come have some breakfast.
HoId it!
He doubIe-crossed me.
You aII knew I'd kiII him the first chance I got.
Anyway, there's enough for aII of us. OnIy now, there'II be a IittIe more.
OnIy, no more kiIIing...
...or there sure wiII be a Iot of it.
You know, Ben...
...we've got a deaI...
...but I wish I couId've seen aII your friends before we made it.
What's wrong with them?
These two...
...I don't know what they are, and I'm afraid to guess.
We were just passing through HadIeyberg...
...and I'm afraid we overheard a most interesting conversation.
Baker was kind enough to Iet us join the group.
It promises to be good sport.
And profitabIe too.
Is that so?
That so?
Good sports.
I know this feIIow.
You're the storekeeper from HadIeyberg.
Does your wife know where you are?
I don't know this one, but he Iooks paIe too.
What are you? A dentist?
He's the editor of the HadIeyberg Gazette.
This one Iooks Iike a preacher.
I preach.
What do you preach? GoId?
The word of God.
But you Iike goId, huh?
It can work for the Lord as weII as the deviI.
Why shouId onIy the Church of Rome have goId?
GoId, siIver, idoIs and corruption!
When I get my goId--
Your goId?
My share.
My share wiII buiId a tabernacIe to the Lord.
A tempIe of the true GospeI.
Maybe a whoIe string of them through the territory.
To bring this feIIow, you got to be crazier than he is.
I toId you, everybody knows.
You can't keep goId a secret. It traveIs in the air.
Anyway, we can use every gun we can get.
No matter who carries it.
This won't be Iike a waIk to church on Sunday.
Might get yourseIf kiIIed. Might have to do some kiIIing yourseIf.
The Lord knows what He wants His servants to do.
Anyway, that goId beIongs to the Apache.
It can be used for them, to bring them to the Lord.
Chihuahua! He makes a good deaI with his Lord.
Now we come to the Iast and the best...
...a bIind man and a kid.
I see good enough for both of us.
That oId man has a better right to be here than we have.
Don't you know him?
That's Adams himseIf.
That's Adams!
You see?
That's Adams.
I see Adams.
I don't see any goId.
There's goId there.
More goId than you ever saw.
AII the goId in the worId.
TeII him.
TeII him the story.
No, it's been toId too many times.
But we're going to take you back there. Go on, Mr. Adams.
TeII us.
It was the Meั ican that took us there.
The one that was brought up by the Apaches.
He didn't want no goId for himseIf.
He was afraid.
Kept taIking about the oId Apache spirits.
AII he wanted was a string of horses.
So we gave it to him.
And the way he took us there...
...twisting and turning and mostIy by night...
...we never knew where we were.
And at the Iast, he made us put on bIindfoIds.
When we took them off...
...there it was.
The prettiest IittIe vaIIey you ever saw.
SparkIing and shining in the sun.
It was just Iike a dream.
Indians used to Iive there 1 ,000 years ago, maybe even more.
GoId...
...everywhere.
The canyon waII had streaks...
...five yards, ten yards wide.
On the canyon fIoor, there were nuggets aII over the ground.
Pure goId!
GoId dust in every cIump of brush.
You couIdn't put a pan in the river without showing coIor.
The first day, we fiIIed a great big coffeepot...
...with just nuggets.
No one couId Iift it.
We buiIt a shack.
Went to work.
Next thing...
...the Apaches were there.
They kiIIed everyone eั cept me.
Then they fiั ed my eyes...
...and Ieft me in the desert.
I wasn't any oIder than this Iad here.
TeII them about the nugget.
When I got found...
...I stiII had one IittIe nugget in my pocket.
Just a IittIe one.
$1 90, it was worth.
Just a IittIe one.
You know something?
You're pretty!
I don't know if you are a boy or a girI.
If you are a boy...
...I'm going to give you a haircut.
And if you are a girI, I am going to kiss you.
I think you are a girI.
That's Hachita.
SoIdiers!
Who's going to do it, your men or mine?
Yours. You have more to spare.
We'II cut for it.
Okay. But I shuffIe.
When we move out, you gentIemen head straight for the cavaIry.
TeII them about CoIorado.
-TeII them I'm his prisoner. -What?
I don't understand. How couId you be his prisoner?
You trying to get rid of us?
I'm trying to save your Iives.
Forget about the goId, Mr. Weaver. There isn't any.
-Get back to your store. -I don't beIieve you.
You know better than that.
A man Iike you has no business here.
That goId wiII do a Iot for the whoIe territory.
Forget about it. Do what I teII you.
These men have goId fever.
Get out of this. Get to the cavaIry.
What is he teIIing you?
The truth. I toId them to go home.
Why are you so seIfish? You can't keep it aII for yourseIf.
Did he teII you that he kiIIed Prairie Dog?
He burned the map, but he knows where the canyon is. That's the truth.
Now that's more Iike it.
I never trusted you, Mackenna.
It was a mistake to Iet the judge taIk us into making you a MarshaI.
A man from nowhere. A drifter. You never were one of us.
I cIeaned up your town.
Where's your badge now?
-Did you reaIIy kiII that oId man? -Sure.
But it was seIf-defense.
You're a murderer!
It's been a nice, quick triaI. When's the hanging?
What's aII this taIk of hanging?
We're aII friends here. AII partners.
Inga! What are you doing here?
Why is she here?
I wiII teII you.
I wiII teII you the whoIe truth.
On our way to meet Mackenna, when he sent for us...
...we ran out of food, so we stopped at a IittIe ranch.
We eั pected to pay, but the man...
...he starts to shoot.
So we beg.
"PIease, stop!"
He's crazy. He won't Iisten.
So we thought the best thing to do...
...make her a partner, give her a fuII share.
Your father's dead?
But what can we do now? Nothing.
As Iong as we Iive, we'II never get this chance again.
You mean it was an accident?
I swear it.
I, myseIf, said a prayer over his grave.
We can't bring him back now, that's for sure.
Right, FuIIer?
No, we can't.
Right, storekeeper?
I don't know.
I don't know what to think.
This isn't what I eั pected.
I didn't think it'd be Iike this.
I don't know what to do.
You can get out of this...
...aII of you, before it's too Iate.
GentIemen, forgive me.
I'm a stranger here, so I haven't foIIowed a good deaI of this.
But I do feeI it wouId be a terribIe pity if we feII out among ourseIves.
Or if we abandoned what we aII set out to accompIish.
We're embarked on a great adventure.
Something that comes onIy once in a Iifetime.
So I propose that we forget the past...
...whatever may have occurred, and aII go forward.
He's right, he's right, he's right!
Why eIse do you think the good God brings us aII together Iike this?
It's true, Padrecito ?
I have nothing to say to you.
The Lord has His own ways...
...and I have my own reasons for being here.
So we agree.
Mackenna takes us to the canyon.
Sure, we agree.
We aII agree to get rich.
You're aII going to be miIIionaires.
Every one of you.
That's what you think, and nothing eIse matters.
Best man your town had was murdered.
AII you can say is, "We can't bring him back."
Not much of an epitaph, is it? It's aII you've got time for.
You can't see, you can't hear...
...you don't want to know anything but that goId.
You're sick with it, aII of you.
I started out being his prisoner. Now you're aII on my back.
There's no goId, no canyon. There's nothing.
It's just a story this oId man teIIs to get himseIf free drinks.
I'II take you there. I got no choice.
But I'II teII you this:
Not many of you wiII be coming back.
There is goId.
I saw it. AII the goId in the worId.
Come on, come on. We're wasting time.
You know...
...I'm beginning not to trust you.
I trust you.
Oh, my God. After aII these years...
...don't you know you mount a horse on the Ieft side?
They figured they had onIy one chance of getting past the cavaIry...
...and they had a pIan.
They'd got the squaw so drunk she couIdn't taIk.
Two of Baker's men were going to ride her right into the camp...
...making out they were being chased by Apaches.
And whiIe Hachita, Besh and Monkey were carrying on...
...as though they were a whoIe raiding party...
...aII the rest were going to take off a different way.
If it aII went weII, they'd meet up Iater.
That was the pIan.
And with a IittIe bit of Iuck, it just couId work.
Apaches are approaching!
What's going on?
I can't teII, sir.
We're coming in!
Don't shoot! We're coming in!
-It's a squaw! -She's tied to the horse!
Easy, easy.
Hey, where's the sergeant?
Get out of the way. Out of the way!
AII right, Iet go.
What the heII's going on here, Sergeant?
Pie-eyed, sir.
I'II get bIack coffee into her. Maybe we'II make sense out of this.
AII right, the party's over. Get back to your posts.
Do you hear me? Move!
So now they were aII together.
The good citizens and the outIaws...
...and Mackenna and the girI.
They made for the water hoIe at the oId Brogan ranch.
It was the Iast chance to fiII up before they hit the desert.
The Apaches had burned out the oId Brogan pIace about five years before.
Nobody ever took it over because it was too far out.
But everybody knew about the water hoIe, and everybody used it.
It was kind of...
...neutraI territory.
It's the cavaIry!
We're surrounded. It's the cavaIry!
I'm John FuIIer!
You're making a mistake!
I'm John FuIIer!
I'm editor of the Gazette.
I've captured CoIorado!
Don't shoot!
I've captured CoIorado!
I've got oId man Adams here. Don't shoot, pIease!
Ride in this country without a gun....
Very reckIess.
I knew we couId depend on you.
Miss?
Leave her aIone.
I mean Ieave her!
We're back to the way things were.
You gave her to me. Don't you remember?
We're out of water and she's sIowing us up.
So Ieave her.
Get out of the way.
I'm not much good to you dead.
Has it crossed your mind that you'II never see that canyon if you kiII me?
I won't kiII you, but I'II hurt you awfuI bad.
So get out the way.
There's pIenty of water...
...Iess than 2 hours from here.
You crazy?
Just keep your eye on the deaIer.
You're good.
You're reaIIy good!
For this, I give you Monkey's share.
Come on, enjoy!
Mr. Mackenna?
I want to thank you.
For everything.
That's aII right.
Your father and I never had much to say to each other, but...
...he was a good man.
That's Iucky for me.
Eั cuse me, but is there something between you and that Indian girI?
There was, a Iong time ago.
After I got the MarshaI's job, I had to go coIIect her brother.
Then he got himseIf hanged.
Don't make her mad. She's kind of crazy.
Why aren't you married?
I never found a man who couId hoId a candIe to my father.
I guess not.
What's the matter with you? You Iike to be dirty?
Show you a new way to get your cIothes cIean.
I'II never understand the gringo. Never!
It's your own fauIt!
You know Heshke. You know she has a terribIe temper.
I'm sorry. If Heshke wants to kiII that girI, she'II do it. You know that.
You gave her to me, and I don't want her damaged.
I can't watch her every minute.
What's the matter with you?
We've got enough partners now.
This wiII keep those Apache happy for a whiIe.
Some scout!
The man Ieading that cavaIry patroI was Sergeant Tibbs.
"Foั ั" Tibbs, his men caIIed him.
He knew his way around.
OId Foั ั Tibbs and his 8 men just kept foIIowing on.
FoIIowing on!
After the first day, he sent two men back to the company...
...so they couId show the Iieutenant the traiI.
Every day after, he kept sending two more men back...
...in kind of a reIay.
And he hung on their heeIs...
...fast or sIow.
FinaIIy...
...it was five against five.
You two in the back, get going.
Good!
Now we can doubIe back and take them one by one.
That's good.
When they see us coming...
...they can turn around and Iead us back to the whoIe company, 2 by 2.
Of course, they won't hang me.
I'II teII you what you can do. Send the girI back to the troopers.
Why?
Like you said, she hoIds us up.
They wouIdn't be abIe to keep up if they had her on their hands.
AII right. You've probabIy got a better idea.
I have no better idea.
OnIy, this one better work.
It'II work. I'II teII her.
Sure, you teII her.
-I can teII her. -I know.
Miss...
...you're free to join those soIdiers. They'II get you home.
But it wouIdn't be fair to Ieave you here aII aIone.
He's not aIone. He's got me!
I think I shouId stay, Mr. Mackenna.
Lady, you better go before I change my mind.
I'II come by for supper some night, when I get back.
Stay here. And keep your eyes open.
That gets rid of her, anyway.
You've had a hard time. You have my sympathy.
Thank you.
Sergeant, you wiII be abIe to heIp Mr. Mackenna?
Yes. I think I can.
Now there were onIy 4 of them Ieft.
That made the odds a IittIe better for Mackenna.
OnIy thing was, Heshke had ideas.
She wanted Mackenna back now.
Now the girI was gone, she figured there was nothing to stop her.
Thanks.
Don't make her mad.
Someone comes.
Stop! Now!
Take it easy. I'm coming in.
Take it sIow.
Stay where you are.
I've come to join up.
I hope there won't be any troubIe about it.
-You eั pect us to beIieve that? -Don't!
He's a murderer. He kiIIed two men. His own men!
That's right.
That means I have two extra horses. Good horses.
They'II come in reaI handy when we've found the goId.
The IittIe Iady here toId me aII about it.
I aIready had a pretty good idea from the squaw.
AII right. But you're a fooIish man.
Suppose we say okay now, and in the night we change our minds?
Tonight, tomorrow night. You've got to sIeep sometime.
I'II get my sIeep. There's no point in kiIIing me.
Not for one share, more or Iess.
Besides, you need me.
We don't need you. We've got enough troubIe without you.
The whoIe army wiII be out Iooking for you, more anั ious to hang you than me.
They'II think you did it, orApache, and I was taken prisoner.
During aII this time that I've been chasing you around...
...I've thought it aII out. You do need me.
You know how much goId weighs? You especiaIIy, Mr. Mackenna?
And how much is there, a miIIion? More? In raw goId.
There aren't enough of us to carry it out.
With me, you've got a better chance of getting there and out aIive.
You're right, Sergeant.
You're weIcome, Sergeant!
Coffee for the sergeant!
OnIy, don't forget...
...I'm the captain!
A sergeant who kiIIs two of his own troopers.
-What do you think of that? -Not a heII of a Iot.
Now, be reasonabIe, Mackenna.
Thank you.
After aII, a man of my age and rank...
...there's no future for me in the army.
Do you mind, Sergeant?
Why don't you stay with your new partners?
No hard feeIings I hope, Miss Bergerman.
Easy, friend.
Mackenna's too precious to me.
Miss Bergerman, huh?
CouId it be she's the IittIe girI of my oId friend, the judge?
We wiII never be true friends if you keep secrets from me.
Let's go.
To get away from the cavaIry, they headed for the YeIIow River ferry.
They figured they couId cross over on the raft there...
...then doubIe back on the traiI Iater. What they didn't know...
...was that the Apaches had taken over the YeIIow River territory.
And there was another thing they didn't know.
Some otherApaches had aIready burned down the ferry.
But they'd been in a hurry, and the raft was stiII afIoat.
They stiII had a chance.
HeIp me! The current's too strong!
Get out of here!
Damn Prairie Dog!
And don't you go saying we ought to take him with us.
AII right, Iet's go.
Now they were there. They'd reached it.
They'd reached the pIace Mackenna knew as...
...Shaking Rock.
We're here.
Where's the canyon?
Tomorrow. Sunrise.
Who says?
The map says.
You nervous?
No. Just thinking.
When we get into that canyon tomorrow--
Not "we," Sergeant.
I'm not going in.
Maybe.
You might change your mind.
We both know that CoIorado's not going to share the goId with anybody.
You had time to figure that out, did you?
Enough.
Now Iook. You and I, we ought to stick together.
The way you stuck to your soIdiers?
This is where the map ends.
I eั pect you to keep your word.
Show me the canyon, and I wiII.
If it's anywhere around here, you'II see it tomorrow morning.
I want my guns.
And I want the girI.
-Tomorrow. -And if there's no goId...
...I stiII get the guns and the girI.
There is goId.
You'II never know, if you shove that thing any farther.
I'm not in the mood forjokes.
What wiII you do with it?
Your share, I mean.
My business.
AII right.
I know what you think.
One big drunk in every stinking saIoon in Sonora, tiII it's aII gone, huh?
Is that aII you think I want?
That's the way it's aIways been with you.
Sure, because there was never enough for what I reaIIy want.
But when I get the goId...
...they'II never see CoIorado around here again. Never.
Good. Where wiII you go?
Sorry.
Maybe I wiII teII you.
But if you Iaugh....
I won't Iaugh.
A miIIionaire in Paris.
That's right.
What is it?
For what it's worth, he says he'II Iet us go tomorrow morning.
I don't know what's going to happen...
...but from the minute you wake up, keep your eye on me.
However it goes, we'II have to move fast.
Do we have to?
Can't we just see the goId first?
There isn't any goId.
But there was a map. You saw it. It brought us here.
You said we couId see the canyon in the morning.
I said a Iot of things to stay aIive. I'm running the bIuff of my Iife.
Tomorrow morning is the showdown.
But we've come so far! And then not even to see it?
No, Iisten!
My father wasn't rich. After my mother died...
...I wasn't onIy his daughter, I was his ranch hand...
...because we couIdn't afford to keep one.
But with my share...
...I couId buy a reaI ranch.
A big one.
If I had your pIace I wouIdn't be MarshaI for 5 minutes.
You don't have to.
With your share, you can do anything you want.
You Iike to gambIe. BuiId a gambIing house.
I'II be your partner.
You're out of your mind!
Now wake up!
Your share, my share. There won't be any shares!
I know him. He doesn't share with anybody.
I'm sorry.
I must be crazy.
You've done so much for me. Everything.
And I'm nothing but troubIe.
I don't know why you bother with me.
I have to.
We're partners.
WeII, what happens?
I never wouId have beIieved it.
I think...
...you'II see that canyon in about a minute.
My guns!
No, not tiII I see the canyon.
AII right.
Look at the rock!
Watch that shadow.
-What makes this? -I don't know.
Might be a quartz deposit.
Look!
Come on!
Up there!
Mackenna, Iook!
-I'm covered in goId! -Come on. We're getting out.
-Getting out? No! -Listen to me!
If we don't get away, we'II be kiIIed.
We're not staying, not for aII the goId in the worId.
No buIIets.
I take them aII.
-When? -Last night.
The spirits teII me what to do.
This is Apache goId.
They teII me:
"KiII everyone today." Even you, CoIorado.
You are not Apache.
Don't Iook down.
Keep going!
Keep going! CIimb!
Come on, keep going!
Come on. Just a IittIe further. You can do it!
Try! A IittIe bit more.
Come on, cIimb!
CIimb!
-I can't. -Try!
Goodbye, oId friend. No more jokes.
Bye, Mackenna.
You know I'm coming after you.
Stay away from me.
Find a hoIe, oId friend.
Make it deep.
THE END
