Tom: Robin's
rock bottom is death.

Robin: And that makes me
a great pilot.

robin: What kind of plane
we got coming in here?

My name's robin.

Jacquie: Look, I see the...

Robin: It's coming off
right here.

Jacquie: Oh, it's coming off.

Robin: He's at 500 feet.

Jacquie: He just
always loved planes.

Robin: I love sitting here,
like...

Like, look out there.
Listen to that.

Just the sound of that
is just kick-ass.

Jacquie: He was a very
sought-after pilot.

Christine: He's done some
amazing jobs as a pilot.

Robin: I used to
taxi down this ramp.

I'm the best pilot
you'll ever meet.

But...

I'm an alcoholic.

Robin: I will drink
24 beers per day.

Robin: Drinking heavily
frees me

from feeling stress...

Anger...

Worthlessness.

Duncan: Robin drinks to excess.

Robin: It's probably the spot.

Oh!

Duncan: He drinks to pass out.

Bottom line.

Tom: He had 200 bucks
a couple weeks ago.

He stayed in his room,
and he drank $200 worth of beer

in four or five days.

Robin: Augh...

Tom: It's a serious problem.

robin: We're gonna go
into the liquor depot

and get what I need,

and I'll call it
beer budgeting.

I'll get enough
so that tomorrow

I'll have a couple
left in the morning,

so that I don't
feel like [bleep].

Scott: Robin is usually
either passed out,

usually bleeding from something.

Christine: Robin has been
in the hospital in edmonton

three times
in the last three months.

Jacquie: His bloodwork
is not healthy.

His kidney function isn't great.

Scott: I haven't seen robin
sober in a long, long time.

Duncan: I don't ever
see him anymore.

I've thrown him out
of my house twice.

I threw him out the front door.
I told him never to come back.

Scott: It's sad to say
that my memories of...

What he was like
are slipping away.

Scott: His system
is shutting down.

He's a shell.

robin: I'm the third-born
of three children.

Duncan: Robin was a happy kid.

We didn't have to worry about

where our next meal
was coming from,

if there was toys
for our birthday.

We didn't go without at all.

Scott: We had an
incredibly happy childhood.

Tom: He was just
that fun little guy,

because he has
always been little.

And his brothers would pick
on him and make fun of him

because he was short.

Duncan: Scott and I teased
robin about his height.

Robin: My brothers
would bug me about it

all the time.

Robin tried to
do well at everything.

Tom: When he played hockey,

he always made the top team,

and you'd see pictures
of him on the team,

and all the kids
would be this tall,

and robin was this tall.

Robin: I was always
the perfect person,

the perfect student,

the perfect everything.

Tom: Like, he was our
little dream child,

for off to university,
and we had such high hopes.

Robin: Like, I didn't
want to go to university.

I wanted to be a pilot.

Robin: When I was
four years old,

my grandpa used to
take me out of school,

tell the teacher I had
a doctor's appointment,

and then we used to drive down
to where the airport is

and sit there
and watch airplanes.

I was exhilarated.

So, when I went to university,

I was trying to
please my parents.

jacquie: Robin was a server.

I was a lounge server.

After shift, we all...

Partied quite a bit.

Robin: When I was
in high school,

very shy person,

and then I went to university,

and alcohol released that.

You all of the sudden
become this different person.

Jacquie: Robin actually,
back then,

was known as "fun bobby."

as his shift neared its close,

he would get very drunk.

He would have a coffee mug,
if it was winter,

and it would be
filled with red wine.

Scott: He started drinking hard

because the access that
the restaurant allowed him.

Jacquie: I did cash in the
morning, and I'd open the doors,

and he's wrapped around a booth.

I didn't really know

that level of drunk.

Robin: I started drinking
to relieve my shyness,

and I kept going.

Robin: It was totalled,

so I'm not gonna call my dad,
because my dad, he gets mad.

So I call my mom,

and my mom, probably for
the first time in her life,

lied to my dad...

About how that car
was totalled.

Christine: I guess
I covered that up for him,

and maybe if I hadn't,

things would have
been different.

I don't know.

Scott: He hasn't had to deal
with the consequences that

a lot of people would
have to deal with.

It's like the zamboni comes over
and sweeps the ice rink clean,

and there you go,
a fresh surface again.

And he keeps getting-- robin
keeps getting a fresh surface.

Jacquie: He had been
talking about, you know,

how cool it would be
to be a pilot.

Jacquie: I said, robin, there's
a training place downtown,

and why don't we just drive
there and go talk to somebody,

and see what happens--
like, how do you become a pilot?

Jacquie: When he got
into that pilot school,

what he's always
dreamed of doing,

he stopped drinking,

and he didn't drink.

Robin: I realized
that my main purpose

in this life is to be a pilot.

Scott: Robin wanted
to be a pilot,

so he worked to be a pilot,

I think harder than most people
work at anything.

Tom: He was sober, and he just
buzzed through everything.

Robin: I worked for
michael bolton for two months.

We went to these places like

wendover, utah; seattle;

all these different places.

Every day,
we'd get out of the plane,

into the limo,
went to a concert.

It was the funnest
experience of my life.

Jacquie: He's a great pilot,

and he's flown so many planes.

He can fly almost anything.

Scott: He had everything
he always wanted.

He was a happy, happy guy.

Robin: I was living
the perfect life.

I loved making my kids laugh

and making them happy.

Jacquie: For a while,
robin was flying up north.

And the weather would change,

and he'd be stuck
up there for a week.

Robin: The flying is
not the stressful part.

It's the stress of being
away from your family.

I missed my second child's
third birthday.

I missed my first child's
first birthday.

So I would grab a 12-pack.

Drinking was
the only way I knew

to numb the feeling
of loneliness.

Christine: I think he just sort
of got into a downward spiral

and was drinking all the time.

Tom: He'd get a job, a good job.

He'd start to drink.

Poof-- out of there.

Robin: I've lost friends.

I lost respect from
pretty much everybody.

Tom: His wife wouldn't put up
with robin's drinking.

He promised so many times
he would stop.

Robin: I love her...

Through and through,

and I would do anything
for that person,

but I failed her.

Having to come home
and have your wife

drag you out of your car,

throw you in bed
in front of your child,

and say, "daddy's just sick."

scott: Robin would drink,

and his wife would
get home from work,

and there'd be broken
bottles on the floor.

And there's a baby in the crib,
and the window's open.

-40 weather,

and robin's passed out
somewhere on the floor.

Tom: Eventually,
she told him, "get out."

robin: I went on
a two-week bender.

I fell down and hit my head

and had the police and the ems,

and all this.

Christine: We didn't
know where he was.

We phoned a couple
of the hospitals and found him,

and we got him a plane ticket,

and he came back here.

robin: Hi, dad.

Robin: [sighs] I had to cancel
a medical appointment today

because I don't feel good.

I can't take a [beep] job

because I can't do my medical.

jacquie: He's got
nothing left to live for.

♪

robin: My wife left me,

my children left me.

Now everything is gone.

Everything is gone.

Tom: He says all the time,
"I don't care if it kills me."

robin: [beep]

robin: [beep]
no, no.

Jacquie: Robin will die
if he doesn't accept treatment.

Robin: [groans]

jacquie: There's not
a question in my mind.

Christine: The last few months,

it hasn't been pleasant.

Robin doesn't come upstairs.

He gets angry a lot quicker.

I get upset,

but I can't throw him out.

Tom: Rob?
Robin: Yes, sir?

Tom: You know I collected
all that bottles and stuff

out of your room the other day,
to get rid of the stink.

Is there any more in there?

Robin: There is some in there.
There's two.

Robin: Okay, fine, go.
Right behind the door.

Tom: Okay.
Thank you.

Robin: But leave the two
that are full in there.

Tom: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Tom: I've enabled him to
continue living in our basement.

But he's my son,
and I've told him, like,

no matter what you do,

I can't not love you.

Because you are my son.

Duncan: Robin living
in their basement,

it's just a bad situation.

Nobody should have to
look after a 43-year-old guy.

They should be living the best
years of their life right now.

[phone rings]

student: [on phone] morning.

Robin: Sorry I missed
your call last night.

Student: It's all good.

Robin: Did you study last night
or did you take the night off?

Student: I took the night off.
Robin: Good.

What are we doing today?

Robin: What's the max
take-off weight?

Robin: What's the zero
fuel weight?

Robin: Do you take off
the flaps or no flaps?

Robin: Exactly.

You're doing good so far.

Student: Yeah...

Jacquie: A lot of pilots
pay for his services.

He can fly almost anything,
so he's sought-after.

Robin: You can call me

before you step in that sim,

and we'll pep talk you
before you get inside there.

Okay?
Student: Yeah.

Robin: All right, big guy.

Robin: Talk to you in a bit.

Robin: I'm good at it.

Robin: I'm gonna go
for a little walk.

Christine: Whatever that meant.

Christine: Or good morning.
Could have been either one.

Robin: I wake up every day,
and this is what I do.

You put me on "go"...

And I'm gone.

[phone rings]

robin: What do you want?

Robin: Okay, what
questions do you want?

Robin: Okay, well, you do
what I told you to do.

You go to the heart
of the sops,

you learn those numbers.

Max take-off weight?

Robin: You're done.

You just passed ground school.

If you want to make spaghetti,
and you don't want to--

know how to make
spaghetti, call me.

Robin: And I'll help you
make some spaghetti.

It's okay.

Robin: Right now, we're getting
you through ground school, okay?

Robin: If they ask you
a question,

just say, "I've gotta
take a bathroom break,"

and then call me.

Robin: Do I help you out?

Robin: Do you help me out?

Robin: Then keep it going.

Robin: Good.

Student: Okay, bye.
Robin: All right.

Robin: Let's make it home.

Scott: All I hear about
from other people is that

he is an amazing pilot.

Duncan: I mean, he's certified
on multiple planes

and multiple engines,

and he's ruined his life.

Robin: Cessna 185.

That's it.

That's all I got.

Duncan: And personally, I don't
think he can get it back.

[thunder rolling]

[thunder rolling]

robin: There's
a little bit of wind.

It's fine.

It's moving to the southeast,

and that's because of
the direction of the wind

across the mountains.

I have got this, like,
unnatural knowledge

of what happens
with the weather.

I know when to go,

I know when to not go,

and I want people
to be there safe.

And that...

Makes me a great pilot.

robin: The only time
I feel I know something

is when I'm flying.

But alcohol took
everything away from me.

Tom: He has a family.

He could make a fortune
flying big, big airplanes.

But he screwed that up,
and now...

He'll be on the street,
and we won't know if he's dead.

We won't know if he's alive.

Producer: Robin... Oh!
[thud]

robin: [groans]

tom: Man alive, like, I don't
know if I can live with that!

Robin: Yeah.

Tom: Does that hurt, rob?

Robin: Not even hurt,
it's just...

Tom: Holy mackerel.

Robin: Yeah.

tom: Look, oh, geez.

Robin: [crying]

tom: It's too many times, robin.

You do this, and then you
know that it makes you hurt.

Robin: Okay.

Tom: Something to hang onto,
so you don't fall down.

Robin: Yeah.

Tom: Oh, be careful, careful.

Robin: Okay, in there.

Robin: I'm in bed.
Tom: Okay.

Okay, buddy.

Christine: I worry
mostly about his safety.

He has fallen and hurt
himself several times,

including last night.

Tom: So, yeah, you fell down
and hit your head

on one of mom's flower pots.
Robin: Uh-huh.

Tom: I think maybe you're
still a little drunk.

Robin: Oh, most likely.

Tom: Most likely, yeah.

Robin: I can't stand
the fact that I live at home

with my parents at 42,

and I lost my family.

So...

...Alcohol took away
everything from my life.

It stole my family from me,

and yet the only time
I can talk to them

is if I'm drunk,
because I'm ashamed.

[phone rings]

wife: What do you want?

Robin: Wanted to...

Robin: I want to say hi...

Wife: Okay, bye-bye.

Robin: No, no, no, no, no, no.

Wife: Bye-bye.

Jodi: Hi.
Tom: It's grandpa.

Jodie: You know grandpa.
Tom: This is my grandpa.

Yes.
Oh, yeah.

Scott: My parents
don't really know my son.

He's my first son.
He's just 10 months old.

There was an incident
at christmas where

my wife was holding
the baby in her arms.

I had to go out to the car
to get something,

and when I came back in,
robin had taken my son

sort of forcefully,

and he was drunk.

With robin living
at their house,

my wife doesn't want
to go over there.

I don't feel it's safe,
and it's just not comfortable.

Tom: That's my guy!

There!

You're very clever.

You're very clever.
Jodie: Aww.

Duncan: Scott and I have
never been with robin

in quite a long time,

all three of us
together at once.

Christine: He's down
in his room.

Christine: I think so, yeah.

Duncan: Okay.

Duncan: I don't know
what's going to happen.

Robin: I got a good one.

I got that one right there.

Tom: You can't roll it
in it.

Scott: Oh, yeah, that's
how you do it, isn't it?

Duncan: What, spin it around?
Tom: Yeah.

Robin: What's the big guy
eating there, scott?

Scott: I don't know,
some sort of puff.

Robin: A puff of some sort.

robin: You got your own chair
and everything.

Robin: How old's
charlie now, scott?

About 10 months?

Scott: Yep.

Scott: Don't seem
to do much else.

Scott: How about those oilers?

Scott: That's nice.

Jodie: You don't think it
pisses me off that my son

doesn't see his grandparents

because we don't feel safe
coming around here?

But you don't really
give us an option.

Robin: Why don't you say
something nice to me?

Scott: No.

Robin: No?

Robin: Will you stop?

Scott: He's been upsetting
mom for 20 years.

Jodie: Robin, enough!
Scott: You can barely stand up.

Jodie: Scott's trying
to help you!

Robin: I'm sorry I make
everyone feel uncomfortable

and blah, blah, blah.

Scott: Maybe it's time
to look inwards and see

why nobody wants
to be around you.

Scott: I don't know, I rarely
even hear you mention them.

Robin: Never tell me
I don't care about my kids.

Jodie: Prove it!
Scott: You just keep--

jodie: Prove that
you like those kids!

Sober yourself up,
and get them back!

Robin: I'm allowed to talk
to my kids once...

...A week.

Scott: Doesn't that make you
want to maybe get better?

Robin: I can't go home.

Scott: This is the consequences
of what you've done.

Robin: I can't go home.

Scott: You act like there's
nothing you can do about it.

Robin: It has everything
to do with me.

Scott: And there is something
you can do about it.

tom: This conversation is over.

I'm leaving the table.

Scott, you're gonna
leave the table.

And the conversation
is finished.

Scott: My family has
all but disintegrated

since robin has
come back in the picture.

We used to be so close.

Duncan: It affects everybody.

He's ruining everyone's life.

Scott: I think robin
still has a chance,

because I know
he's in there somewhere.

andrew: I'm andrew galloway,

and I'm gonna be your
interventionist tomorrow.

It takes a lot
of courage to be here,

and I know there's lots
of reasons to be here.

We can be here because
we're really angry,

we can be here because
we're scared to death.

But mostly, we're here
because we love robin.

Andrew: So, is this something
you've been seeing going on

for a long period of time?

Christine: Just over 20 years.

Andrew: And when we think of
alcoholism, if not treated,

is going to get worse
and worse and worse,

and ultimately,
we end up at death.

Which is why we're here,
and we're trying to avoid that.

Tom: Everybody's tried to help,
but robin won't help himself.

It's hard to understand-- like,
he was such a terrific person.

Andrew: So tell me a little bit
about growing up with him.

Scott: I think he's
always wanted to be

sort of this weird
sense of perfection.

Like, he's sort of so anxious
about everything.

Jacquie: He's always been
the best at what he does.

He was the best bartender
at our restaurant,

he was the best private pilot,

he got his private pilot
license done the fastest.

Andrew: So it sounds like he
puts pretty high expectations

on himself too, like he has this
idea he's supposed to be here,

and if I'm not there,
then it's not good enough.

Duncan: But at some point,
come on.

Find a way to make it better.

Andrew: He did.
He drank.

Duncan: Okay.
Yeah, you got me.

Andrew: I mean, that's
the problem, right,

is that he never did learn
a different way to change

whatever was going on
inside of him.

Tom: Like, there was never
any reason, it seemed,

to sit down and get serious
about, you know, like,

how are you feeling about that?

Like, we didn't talk
about those things.

Scott: It's like...
The robin problem.

It's something in the room
you don't talk about.

Andrew: It's hard for
families to talk about

the difficult issues.

Scott: But you've gotta do it
once in a while, I think.

Duncan: Like, you're 42 or 43,

or whatever the hell
he is, right?

Christine: 42.

Duncan: Like...
Deal with your [bleep].

If you're not going to,

don't pile it on everyone else.

Andrew: Duncan,
you're filled with

I'd say, a lot of anger.

Duncan: Well, I'm angry
'cause I have to be here.

I have to be dealing with

something I don't want
to be dealing with.

Andrew: What would you like
to see your parents do?

Duncan: Kick him out.

Christine: I'm sure
that I am a huge part of it,

and I'm sure I've
enabled him along the way.

Covered up a lot of things
that he did.

Andrew: What do you mean
you covered up?

Christine: Well, if he had a car
accident that he was drinking,

his dad never knew
that he had...

Andrew: And why would
we keep something like that

from his dad?

Christine: So he wouldn't
be angry with robin.

Andrew: Don't you think that
he should be angry with robin?

Christine: Yes, he
should be angry with robin,

but that's just what I did.

Andrew: So, he never really
ever has consequences?

Tom: No.
It's, uh...

Andrew: No one's done
anything wrong here.

Now, where you are
a little bit responsible

is keeping him in his disease.

He lives in your house.

You provide for him.

Tom: If he dies
in the basement, you know what?

Hurts me to say it,
but I could live with that.

But if he died on the street,

in the gutter, and nobody knew,

and nobody was there to comfort
him in his last minutes...

Holy [beep].
Like, I couldn't...

Like, the thought
of that just...

And that's why I leave
a door unlocked.

Andrew: In both your scenarios,
he ends up dead.

Tom: He has to get treatment.

He has to.

andrew: What's
scaring you right now?

Christine: I'm afraid
he won't go.

And I don't know what'll
happen if he doesn't.

And I'm also afraid to say,
"you can't ever come home

"if you don't go."

andrew: We need to be able
to establish some boundaries.

If we're not capable
of following through,

you're going to sabotage

our intervention
to some degree.

Scott: It has...
It has to end,

'cause I can't keep
going like this.

I can't watch it happen anymore.

[sniffs]

christine: It will be very hard.

Robin: [sighs]

andrew: How are we feeling
about our bottom lines?

Christine: That's
really a tough one.

Andrew: If he
decides not to go,

he's gonna
bank on you caving.

Robin: Let's do this.

robin: In here?

Okay.

Andrew: Hey, robin.

Come on in.
I'm andrew.

Robin: Hey, how are you doing?
Andrew: Nice to meet you.

Robin: I don't know you yet.
Andrew: We haven't met yet.

Robin: So, well,

Andrew: Well, I'm here
on behalf of your family.

As you can see, your
family is all here.

Robin: [beep]

andrew: Yeah.

I thought I was just gonna
be here by myself.

Andrew: Well, everyone's

and they're worried about you.

had such a love of airplanes.

the most amazing pilot

"you always dreamed to be.

"now, all you care about
is yourself and liquor.

"please take the help, so I can

duncan: "first off, know that
I do love and care about you.

go to beautiful lake winnipeg,

one of the best facilities
in the country, actually,

called the aurora
recovery centre,

and give you that opportunity

to recover,

for the sake of your family,
for your children,

but most importantly,
for yourself.

full of pride,

empowered, enlightened.

Brenda: When robin came in,

we knew we had to address
his self-esteem,

and we wanted to establish
a way of robin

being able to work in the world,
understanding his emotions,

and knowing that he didn't
have to be afraid of them.

Robin: No pretending, nothing.

This is what my life's
about now.

Robin: They went down deep
inside, deep into my past,

into my soul.

They brought things that
were subjective to me,

that were like a hurricane
inside my body,

and they pulled them outside
and made them objective,

allowed me to see them.

brenda: I'm extremely
proud of robin,

and he's done an amazing job,

and I'm very, very happy
to know that he's going out.

And I feel he's going to have
a lot of success in his future.

Robin: I have a career.

I can go back to that career.

Am I gonna go right away?
Maybe, maybe not.

I know it's there.
That's an opportunity.

That's an adventure
I can undertake again.

But maybe I'm gonna
find something else.

how I walked in here,

and now I'm walking out
completely different.
