this is the weirdest thing ever.

Usually I'm in here
by myself or with my date,

and I'm watching a movie,
but now I'm being watched.

We've actually been here
for days.

You guys don't ever call me
to hang out, only for this.

This is the only time
I see you guys.

Nobody comes over here
and delivers me deviled eggs.

We're in a movie theater,

and I just felt like it's time
to go to hollywood.

Oh!
Oh, haunted hollywood.

Oh, look, aaron,
there's darth vader.

Do you ever think about dressing
up like the star wars people

and hanging out?
I could see you doing that.

Maybe not in hollywood,
but just walking around town.

Do you secretly do that?
Is that where you're at all
the time when we're not filming?

haunted spot is in hollywood?

-I have no idea.
-No.

-Guess.
-The hollywood sign.

Zak: So, billy, why do you
always drive?

Why are you always the driver?

Billy: 'cause no one else wants
to -- that's the truth.

That is the truth.

You're probably the most
responsible driver.

This is the first location
that we are going

to be investigating.

The sign is right
below my feet here.

I didn't realize
how out of shape I was.

[ laughs ]

until we decided to film
at this sign.

That's my horrible
memory of this location.

'cause the trail
goes all the way.

-Yeah.
-It's not easy getting up there.

If you ever are thinking
about trying

to investigate this sign,

don't think about it
because you are being watched.

Hurry, hurry, hurry.

This was like border patrol.

Imagine how many people
try to sneak up there.

I just couldn't believe
how many cameras there were.

And it's intimidating.

I approached the officer who,
after learning

we've been
granted permission to be here,

agrees to speak with us
on conditions of anonymity.

What's --
what's that notice?

If you go beyond there, I think
you get shot or something.

But I thought
this was really cool

because we're investigating
this area that's under probably

the most highest surveillance
of a location we've ever done.

Yeah. They say
if someone goes up there,

a helicopter gets launched.
If you cross a certain area,

and it comes
and gets you immediately.

Have you ever seen the spirit
of peg entwistle?

The rangers will tell you
this that have been here

for like 20-plus years.
-Yeah.

They say that if you go
that trail at night,

you will see her between,

I don't know, midnight,
I don't know what it is.

-Really?
-They see it all the time.

God, what a view.

Can you tell me a little bit
about why people are saying

the sign is haunted?

Is it true that this peg
committed suicide here?

She did.

There was a woman,
an actress.

Her name was
lilian millicent entwistle.

She went by
the nickname of peg.

-Do you remember her name?
-Peg entwistle.

Peg entwistle,
'cause we just heard it.

[ laughter ]

she was in about a half
a dozen different films

but ended up on
the cutting room floor

of all those films
except for one,

so rko dropped her contract.

And it was the night
of September 16, 1932,

that she sat at a table and
wrote a note out that said...

Woman: I am sorry.

I should've done this
a long time ago.

It would've saved
everyone a lot of pain.

Michaels: And she signed it
only with her initials, pe.

Zak: Crushed by her failure
in the movie business,

what peg did next some would say

was straight out of
a hollywood movie.

Just so everybody knows,
while we're doing our thing,

we have a separate crew
that comes out for a couple days

and they do a great job.
And this is one such example.

And it really gives you
a visual reference.

I want you to feel the emotions

of these people
that we're being told about.

She scaled the 50-foot
letter h

to the top of
the hollywood sign.

And sometimes
our reenactments

are so great and scary that you
have to have a disclaimer

that this might be
a little too much.

Disclaimer, yeah.
Very intense.

And with one final gaze at

the city
she felt betrayed her...

...She wrote the ending
to her own story.

Is it true that, the next day,
she got a letter stating

that she had a lead role
for the beverly hills playhouse

in a play?
-Apparently so.

That's the hollywood ending.

That's horrible.

It's terrible.

If that's not
the most ironic twist,

I don't know what is.

It's been 70-plus years
since she died,

but people still see a woman
in period clothing appropriate

for the time
that she died walking up this --

that lonely road
up to the sign.

There have been two reports,
actually, of people seeing

somebody climbing up to the top
of the letter h and jumping.

-Really?
-They think it's peg's spirit.

Zak: With night casting
its shadow over us,

we head to a famed
attraction within griffith park

which may prove that innocent
energies can still be anchored

to locations
which are familiar to them.

there's something about
this merry-go-round

that stuck with me after I left,

and it literally imprinted
a vision in my mind.

And it's something so simple.

Can you tell me
exactly what you saw?

Yeah, so we were walking back

from a family function
here at the park.

The park's getting ready
to close,

and we all see
what appears to be a boy

dressed in period clothing
wearing,

like, a newspaper boy hat
and short pants,

and we thought that
it was odd that a child

would be unchaperoned
at that late of hour.

We actually called out
to the child.

Didn't respond,
didn't acknowledge the fact

that we were there.

Whoever says this first,

I'll give you
a gift certificate.

So watch.

What item in this
merry-go-round --

and you viewers, too.
Jay: That?

Yes, it's that.
It was that satyr face,

that devil face right there.

-Uh-huh.
-That thing's creepy.

And then just recently
there was an auction in England.

Oh, yeah, it looks
exactly like that --

-that vase.
-The vase thing. Same face.

I was able to find that face.
I wanted to chip off that face,

but I can't do that,
'cause that's against the law.

But I found a vase
with that exact face.

And then he started to move
really quickly

in-between the horses.

He was moving through objects.

And then, as we approached,
kid just disappeared.

He just dematerialized.

Seemed to have.

Do you think that this encounter
was residual,

or do you feel
that this little boy knew

that you were watching him?

Oh, that's a great question.

That little boy knew
that we were watching.

I truly, truly love
interviewing people.

I just love that connection.

on an emotional level,
on a deeper level.

And then I use that
in the investigation.

I think it's a huge part
of the investigation

is learning all that history
and the research.

don't realize just how haunted
hollywood is.

Oh, so haunted.

When you're in hollywood,
you feel the energy

of all the creativity,

these actors and everybody
trying to do their best

to succeed
in such a dog-eat-dog world.

That makes for a big haunted...

-...Area. Yeah, it's insane.

zak: Our investigation of
hollywood's darker side

continues at the american legion
hollywood post 43.

♪♪

built in 1929 for the military
veterans of los angeles,

this 33,000-square-foot building
was also a social club

hosting the who's who
of the old hollywood guard,

and countless legendary
stars and starlets

made this legion
their home away from home.

♪♪

aaron: Dude, every world had
its own feel, remember?

Right.

As we take our first steps
inside the legion,

I immediately experience
a strange energy

which draws me
to this stairwell.

Ooh, man.

You all right?

[ exhales ] I just
walked down these stairs,

and I literally was getting
ready to just start crying.

We found out that
that's the same exact stairwell

where this guy
fell down the stairs.

I did not know that
until he told me.

I felt just a huge rush
of sadness,

like I was getting ready
to start crying.

It was probably all the people
in the bar

'cause we'd had a major
memorial for marshall

after he passed away.

Zak:
Terry duddy is the manager

and a 36-year member
of the american legion.

Can you please tell me
who marshall was?

Marshall
was the bar manager.

And then, because they needed
somebody to stay

in the building,
they moved him upstairs,

and he had a bedroom
up there for 33 years.

What happened
at this flight of stairs?

This is a very tragic story.

-Right.
-Very sad.

There was two tables
full of poker players.

One table had
lasted all night,

and marshall
was at that table.

And that morning, I went to
the restroom right up here,

and I heard moaning,
and of course, at that point,

I looked down the stairwell,

and I saw marshall
laying down here

at the bottom of
the stairwell,

and it was obvious
what had happened.

All the money that he had won

was scattered all over
on the floor.

He had probably gone up
the stairs,

carrying the money,

fell over backwards

and hit his head
on the concrete.

And so I talked to him and tried
to keep him awake,

and, you know,
that was our last conversation

until he went into a coma
and never came out of it.

How sad that is for him
to discover his friend

at the stairs.
-That's terrible.

and, of course,
he's been here ever since.

We call him our casper here
in the building.

We named the pool room
after him.

His picture's on the wall
in the pool room.

Now, he says he's been there
ever since.

Wait until you see what happens
with these lights.

A lot was happening
during interview day.

Mm-hmm.

He loves the legion.
He loved everything about it.

I think that's probably what
kept him healthy all the way up

until the week
before his 90th birthday.

Do the lights do that?

I was just --
do they usually do that?

-Why are the lights doing that?
-That's marshall.

He'll turn them off and on
if you want.

Yeah, it was when you first
mentioned him earlier

was when they first did it.

And right away he's like,
oh, it's marshall.

-He knew.
-Yeah.

Hello, marshall.
My name is zak.

I'm here talking to
your friend, terry.

-Hey, marshall.
-Whoa. They just went off.

-And back on.
-What?

-Yep.
-Oh, there they go.

Look at that.
Isn't that crazy?

-That's awesome.
-That's what's so awesome.

Dude, it's when you said
hi to him.

Marshall, thank you for turning
the lights off and on.

To feel, like, emotions.

Are you okay?

Yeah, yeah.

As soon his friend marshall
gave us that sign through

the lights, you can see
the tears in his eyes.

-Yeah.
-So powerful.

We all have friends and family,

and when you know
that they're around you

and they're trying to
give you a sign,

you feel it,
you feel it in here.

When the lights went down,
I felt the same thing I felt

as when I was
at the bottom of the stairs.
Oh, yeah.

And I literally was getting
ready to just start crying.

I actually don't tear up
too often,

and when I do feel that, I know
that that spirit is there.

Yeah.

And that spirit
has a lot of power

to be able to let you feel
the emotions of that spirit.

Even though this legion
has a long history of hollywood

royalty
who once walked these halls,

terry tells us of its darker
side not known to many.

You always get the sense
that people who drank here

and people who fought here
and people who died here,

a couple of people died
here in fights,

one guy in a knife fight.
-What?

Oh, yeah.
Another guy in a shooting.

He just started going into
the layers of all these deaths.

And I was really shocked.

It's supposed to be
this fun hangout spot, you know?

Yeah. Look at that dog.

On may 27, 1944,

then 57-year-old
harry lucenay,

the owner and trainer

of the little rascals'
beloved dog, pete...

Did someone draw all
that eye on him?

The little rascals' dog,
wasn't it? Petey?

Sorry, bill.
I'm not as old as you,

so I don't remember
this show.

47, bro.
In two months.

Harry met his untimely death
here at the legion.

During an all-night
game of cards,

harry accused a man named
charles bailey of cheating.

Things got heated, and bailey
shot him not once but twice.

[ gunshot ]

forever sealing his name
in the history of this town.

And to this day,

his unrested soul may still be
trapped here at the legion.

as this building was once
a bastion of old hollywood,

we meet a psychic medium
who once encountered

one of cinema's most
legendary icons at the legion.

Was this our first time
we met her.

Black dahlia,
I think was the first.

-Black dahlia.

Tell me the celebrity that
you sensed here one evening.

Right here, exactly where
you are, it was charlie chaplin.

I sensed him. I saw him.
I felt him.

He was just kind of leaning
on this chair a little,

and he had a drink
and he was swirling his drink.

And he had told me,
he literally said,

"I'm back. I came back."

luckily, we were in hollywood
and we needed a charlie chaplin

reenactor for that bit.

It was easy to find one.
We just went and found one,

I think, on aaron's sunset --

There's stuff everywhere
in this theater.

You'll find all kinds
of weird stuff.

whose spirit has been seen
numerous times near the sign.

on the last investigation.

As we continue to investigate,

a strange ball of light

is seen entering frame
and disappearing into me,

these orbs of light?

dust or whatever."

you know what? That's the only
orb of light we captured on

probably 30 hours
of night vision footage.

we would see more than
one single dust particle

on 30 hours of night vision

of light

disappearing in us or around us,

there is nothing strange

Then, in the second photo,
a very strange black anomaly

appears from behind
the second l,

and in this third photo,

the black anomaly
seems to change shape,

while also becoming transparent.

And to us, it almost
looks like an arm

reaching out
from behind the sign.

An arm coming
through the sign?

I was thinking about that
like today.

Look at that.

We don't know exactly
what this anomaly is

and when we analyze it further,
we pull up our x camera

to the exact time
when this photo was taken,

and there is absolutely nothing
in the area

where the anomaly appears.

That is amazing.

Right. But you also had
200 cameras

from the police department
on every angle on these signs

witnessing using this.

I would love to see
if they captured anything

on their surveillance camera on
the other side of that sign.

that we just got something,

to see that for the first time.
