One of my scariest nightmares
that we are about to relive.

tortured by guilt and despair

After he was unable
to save a drowning girl

In the canals of xochimilco.

When a lone baby doll
drifted up to his small island,

Don julian
received it as a sign.

For 50 years,
he collected dolls,

Offerings to the little girl,

And hung them
throughout the island.

I'm not sure if I can go through
with this investigation

Because I've got
a very real phobia of dolls.

This story just
really got to me,

And, like, this is
a real story of the guy

Who lived on the island that
actually found a drowned kid.

This was a scary trip, not just
for the island of the dolls.

Arrived here,
there was nobody around.

-And, mind you, at this time,

We started hearing about
some of the cartels and stuff,

And it kind of scared us.
Yeah.

standing there at the water

With the machine gun?

He was with the military
just protecting the area.

-That was intimidating.

Zak: This guy was great.
This was a fixer.

And, like, when you
film international,

You have to get a fixer,

Somebody who takes
your crew around, translates.

And this guy over here,
he was so great.

-He was so cool.
-He was good.

And there are some people
that say that they saw them.

Zak: During
the mexican revolution in 1911,

Zapatista rebels
rampaged through xochimilco,

Set it on fire,

And left
a trail of bodies behind.

They brought the bodies,
dropped them in the water.

Zak: They dumped
the bodies in the canals.

They dumped the bodies

Once, they did a cleaning
of the canal...

Zak: As we make the long journey
to the island of the dolls,

We stop at another small island

Where a local theater company
performs "la llorona,"

A play based
on ancient mexican folklore.

Zak: The play itself

Has something to do with
children being killed

And then coming back
as spirits, right?

-And that's chilling to me.

Zak: This guy back here, the guy
that's driving the engine.

-I wanted to bring him home.

-I wanted him to be my friend.
-He was so cool.

a woman who drowns her children

Is trapped
between the living world

And the spirit world.

Zak: What these people did,
they gave us a lot of context

About the legend, and they

As we return to our boat,

Fernando finds a local laborer

These canals were so scary.

And I think it was the aztecs
that built them.

Once he starts getting
closer to the sound,

The sound starts
to go more violent,

And he starts
to get really stressed.

His heart has started
to go really fast.

He thought he was going
to have a heart attack.

Zak: After experiencing
this phenomenon,

understand what was said to him.

After five days,

His family took him to a shaman
for an exorcism.

Zak: I like finding people that
we're not supposed to interview

And you can see how it affected
these people so bad.

What was crazy was --

around in the boats with gear?

By these two spirits

awaits us backstage.

I don't know how our driver

Back at the dock, billy
will be following us shortly.

He's preparing a base camp.

There is a blazing inferno
in the fire pit.

Who or what started this fire?

Burst out of nowhere.

We were just right here,

And that fire was not started.

-Yeah, that was so weird.

In the previous shots.
There was no fire lit.

But we think that
it may have been a person.

Problem is, is you would
have seen someone run off.

And we're on an island.
Like, they can't go anywhere

really strange right now

Because when we pulled up
