One of my scariest nightmares that we are about to relive.

One of my scariest nightmares that we are about to relive.

In 1950,

Don julian santana barrera was tortured by guilt and despair

After he was unable to save a drowning girl

In the canals of xochimilco.

When a lone baby doll drifted up to his small island,

Don julian received it as a sign.

For 50 years, he collected dolls,

Offerings to the little girl,

And hung them throughout the island.

I'm not sure if I can go through with this investigation

Because I've got a very real phobia of dolls.

This story just really got to me,

And, like, this is a real story of the guy

Who lived on the island that actually found a drowned kid.

This was a scary trip, not just for the island of the dolls.

-Oh. -But, like, when we

Arrived here, there was nobody around.

-Yeah. -And, mind you, at this time,

We started hearing about some of the cartels and stuff,

And it kind of scared us. Yeah.

Hey, remember the guy standing there at the water

With the machine gun?

He was with the military just protecting the area.

-Right. -That was intimidating.

Zak: This guy was great. This was a fixer.

And, like, when you film international,

You have to get a fixer,

Somebody who takes your crew around, translates.

And this guy over here, he was so great.

-He was so cool. -He was good.

Benitez: And there are some people that say that they saw them.

[ speaking native language ]

Zak: During the mexican revolution in 1911,

Zapatista rebels rampaged through xochimilco,

Set it on fire,

And left a trail of bodies behind.

They brought the bodies, dropped them in the water.

Zak: They dumped the bodies in the canals.

They dumped the bodies in the canals.

Once, they did a cleaning of the canal...

Zak: As we make the long journey to the island of the dolls,

We stop at another small island

Where a local theater company performs "la llorona,"

A play based on ancient mexican folklore.

Zak: The play itself

Has something to do with children being killed

And then coming back as spirits, right?

-Right. -And that's chilling to me.

Zak: This guy back here, the guy that's driving the engine.

-Oh, yeah, yeah. -I wanted to bring him home.

-I wanted him to be my friend. -He was so cool.

Zak: In the play, a woman who drowns her children

Is trapped between the living world

And the spirit world.

Zak: What these people did, they gave us a lot of context

About the legend, and they believe in this la llorona.

And they do it once a year to please the spirit, right?

Zak: As we return to our boat,

Fernando finds a local laborer

Who wants to tell us about being terrorized in the canals.

These canals were so scary.

Like, they just went forever,

And I think it was the aztecs that built them.

-Wasn't it? -Yeah, they're ancient.

I think it was, yeah.

Once he starts getting closer to the sound,

The sound starts to go more violent,

And he starts to get really stressed.

His heart has started to go really fast.

He thought he was going to have a heart attack.

Zak: After experiencing this phenomenon,

Jovany couldn't communicate or understand what was said to him.

After five days,

His family took him to a shaman for an exorcism.

Zak: I like finding people that we're not supposed to interview

Or don't think that we're interviewing them.

Right. That's where you usually get gold.

And you can see how it affected these people so bad.

What was crazy was --

Remember when we were driving around in the boats with gear?

And we just stop, gear up? We were like...

Yeah. Two spirits. You couldn't just get out of there.

And he believes that he got possessed

By these two spirits on the water?

That we were just told by a professor

Where bodies were disposed of.

Zak: Like, this is the buildup to the island of the dolls.

Like, we haven't even gotten to the scary part of the dolls.

Like, it was much more than just the island of the dolls.

And, like, these two spirits possessed him,

And his family had to give him an exorcism.

And this research right now is giving me chills.

Including the doll that floated up after the girl's death.

Aaron: So is that just weather erosion...

And then, like, sun that ruined all that?

-No, they're all possessed. -Well, why are they so burnt?

Zak: We've completed a preliminary investigation

Of the island of the dolls,

So we return to mexico city

To gather more evidence and add personnel.

We are at the teatro del pueblo,

Where a guest investigator awaits us backstage.

I have warned the guys to avoid touching him

And, above all, to never look into his eyes.

Oh, my gosh! Harold the doll!

Zak: What I first took to be a minor injury

Begins to seem more and more sinister.

Because it is about to break off.

So her psychic prediction about us was, like,

Directing towards harold the doll.

Zak: Armed with information and harold the haunted doll,

We're returning to the island of the dolls.

Now, this was scarier because this boat ride was in the dark.

We went during the day. Now we're in the dark.

Zak: Oh, man. Right now, we are in xochimilco.

The canals -- it's pitch dark.

I don't know how our driver can see where we're going.

Back at the dock, billy will be following us shortly.

He's preparing a base camp.

But right now, it's myself, aaron, and jay.

Ladies and gentlemen,

We are on our way to investigate the island of the dolls.

As we make the long journey to the possessed doll island,

We are reminded

That this ancient, prehistoric canal system,

Which was built by the aztecs,

Is like a network of veins pumping this cursed water

Mixed with the blood and souls

Of all the bodies that were dumped here,

Polluting the bottom with bones.

It's pitch black,

And we've been driving for a while in the boat.

That was the most scariest thing

We've been on the boat for a little while

And haven't even gotten off.

Without night-vision cameras in order to do some exploring.

This was such an awesome investigation, though.

Any time of day, this place is terrifying.

You got to remember, these are not regular dolls.

Like, these are truly possessed dolls.

They had been sitting there for how long?

We're still waiting for billy and pedro to get here,

Because they had to take one of the paddleboats,

So it'll take them about an hour and a half to get here,

'cause we took a motorboat.

How long? That was, like, two hours.

Zak: Once we get on the island,

We hear a bunch of cans getting kicked around,

And as we head towards where these sounds came from,

We see the fire pit with no flames whatsoever.

-Oh, the fire! -Oh, right.

Zak: Only seconds later,

There is a blazing inferno in the fire pit.

Who or what started this fire?

Burst out of nowhere.

We were just right here,

And that fire was not started.

-Yeah, that was so weird. -You can see it

In the previous shots. There was no fire lit.

But we think that it may have been a person.

Problem is, is you would have seen someone run off.

-You would have heard that. -We never saw anybody.

And we're on an island. Like, they can't go anywhere

Unless they jump in the water, but...

Jay: I've never seen a fire just start like that.

Never seen a fire just light up like that

And rage that intense, too. Right.

It's just getting bigger and bigger, too.

Zak: Things are getting really strange right now

Because when we pulled up on the boat,

We were within feet of where this fire pit is,

And it wasn't lit.

This spot was absolutely pitch black.

35 minutes later,

Billy and pedro finally arrive on the trajinera,

And it's time to start our official investigation.

Oh, yeah! All the gear was there.

Right now, we're getting ready to start.

We have don julian's very good friend

Sitting here at base camp.

Around my shoulder, I am carrying the world-famous

Harold the haunted doll that has cursed many people

And has even been said to kill people.

Where the other possessed dolls are located

To see if it triggers a reaction.

Something would happen to get us away from them.

It was like they were watching every single move

We were making in this place.

That was straight out of a [bleep] horror movie!

Zak: Oh, god. Look at that, dude. Stop.

Aaron: Oh, my god.

One of the old ones that doesn't even have,

We did not feel welcomed in this spot.

Walked in, and it was just -- ugh.

Did that thing just start?

Dude, it just started going off.

Right before the doll started crying, we heard the cat.

This almost gave me a heart attack.

We believe that the possessed dolls in this shed

And this force was also sensed by two cats

Right before a doll begins laughing behind us.

That thing scarred me for about three years.

We all hear a very strange, high-pitched sound

That is in a frequency we can't explain.

By trying to isolate the mysterious laughing doll.

Zak: But this is when the [bleep] hit the fan.

This is when we try to debunk it as being,

We're showing you that we're doing motion sensor here,

If any doll here has it,

But you can see all these dolls are old and dirty.

They don't do anything.

Arachnophobia decides to pop out and say, "what's up?"

In the back of it --

Aaron: You can see! Wires. Nothing.

There's wires.

Zak: We decide to return to base camp on the boat

Where jay let pedro listen to the audio of the doll

Laughing through his boom-mic headphones.

They just said that pedro was trying to tell them something

While it was crying, but we don't know,

So we're gonna call back to the docks for our translator.

Can you ask him what he was trying to tell us

When the baby started crying?

Zak: Now we start realizing that the alcohol

Once we turned on the spirit box.

Zak: Earlier, before we left the docks,

I had our translator tell pedro to give me a thumbs up

If he hears don speak.

For about 20 minutes, I try speaking with don in spanish,

And no voices come through the device.

It is only when pedro begins speaking

That it seems he begins hearing his friend don.

Zak: For all of you skeptical of the spirit box,

He hears his friend come through the spirit box

In the middle of nowhere.

Thumbs up? He just gave me thumbs up.

Zak: Using pedro as a trigger object,

We have established communication with don julian.

He just gave me thumbs up.

-Then he just changed. -Right?

Everything changed. He started getting into it.

He started talking more. He was talking to his friend.

-Yeah. -He was smiling.

And then he went off and did this on his own.

-That's right! -He went and cut these flowers.

This guy was, like, blown away.

Zak: Aaron and I begin investigating other parts

Of the island using the full-spectrum video camera

And eventually end up back at don julian's hut.

I thought we were done. Then we had to go back in.

I was like [bleep]! No.

-[bleep]. -Hold this. Hold this.

-Hold this. -There's nothing on you.

-This was traumatizing. -Was there someone in you?

It was a spider. There were spiders everywhere.

I'd have been doing the same.

-[bleep]. -What happened?

[ exhales deeply ]

I felt a [bleep] hand go down my [bleep] back.

I didn't feel a spider or bug crawl down by back.

I felt an icy-cold hand that had this static-type energy to it.

Zak: Oh, god, that hand I felt go down my back.

Zak: To add to this experience, right after I ask,

An angry voice speaks in english

And says, "I don't like her, stupid."

Are you trapped in these dolls?

This is a real-life nightmare we're watching, dude.

If you don't have a fear of dolls,

You'll have one after going there.

Zak: Is it possible that one of the spirits

That possesses harold the haunted doll

Has left harold and been following me around?

And is this the same spirit that marked my arm yesterday?

You still haven't gotten to take harold out

'cause we kept getting distracted.

We feel it's finally time to finish taking

Harold the haunted doll out of his bag.

Zak: This is the moment we take harold out.

There's harold.

Zak: We also place the emf doll next to harold

And leave both an x camera and our thermal imaging camera

Rolling in the hut.

Zak: Do you remember that, what we captured, bill, on thermal?

Ohh...

Can you ask him -- was he communicating with don julian?

Okay.

Zak: That was our fixer just giving us

The double confirmation that pedro heard his friend.

Benitez: He could hear him three or four times.

-His voice? -His voice, yes.

He could recognize his voice. Yes.

And this is the first time he really started talking to us.

He says that when he cheered with him,

He could feel the energy, a vibration come into his body,

Like that something was going through him,

Something unexplainable.

It's not physical.

Unsuspecting, our boat driver, the whole trip, ended up being

One of the most important elements of this investigation.

And to know that we succeeded in our investigation

And collected this evidence.

I didn't want to do anything but give him a hug.

-I got emotional. -Yeah.

I hope he's doing well, man. I hope he's doing well.

But watch this.

Zak: As we are packing up to leave the island,

Something odd begins to occur with harold the haunted doll.

You will first notice that underneath harold,

The ground is cold.

Oh, that's right! I remember now!

Yeah, it was, like, emitting heat or something, right?

But as we fast-forward the footage, watch what happens.

Extreme heat begins glowing unexplainably beneath harold.

See the cold underneath? And then we go through.

Look at how hot it got underneath of him!

-It just heats up. -Goes to orange.

-That's right! -How does a doll emit heat?

If anything, it's gonna get colder as the night goes on.

Yeah, as the night goes on, it should be getting colder not hotter.

-Wow. -This can't be debunked.

Harold is not a living baby. His body does not generate heat.

So why are extreme temperatures

Emanating on the ground where he sits?
