Al Morrow --

I own the quick and easy body repair shops.

I see.

You need to talk to a detective?

I think a guy whos living in my house

been doing armed gas station robberies or whatnot.

Thats living at your house.

Joey ficca. Got a history of this.

Why is he living with you?

My wife Sonya got involved

with this good samaritan-type prisoner rehabilitation program.

She wrote letters,

we vouched for him with the parole board,

put him to work in one of my shops --

and then moved him into your guest room.

She and him, in his room, funny smells coming out.

They got towels at the bottom of the door,

but you can still smell the smells anyway.

Like burning styrofoam?

Yeah, it smells like that. That some kind of drug?

Well, some people say that thats what crack smells like.

Ill tell you, ive lost so much confidence lately.

I played high school football. I was a bowler.

But lately my spirits are so low,

I can barely drag myself to work.

How do you know hes doing these stickups,

this Joey ficca?

Every so often, hes throwing around cash,

offering to pay the mortgage and every other damn thing.

I started writing it down. Here.

Theres four different dates there

when he started throwing cash around.

All right, well check those against unsolved robberies.

I was worried it was drugs.

My wife dont wash, dont take the kids to school.

How long has this been going on?

4 1/2 months since he moved in.

Just 4 1/2 months.

Well talk to Joey ficcas parole officer, Mr. Morrow,

and well check these dates you gave US against our 61s.

Low as ive been feeling lately,

I wouldnt be surprised if im slow on the uptake.

Hey, dont be too hard on yourself.

Your wife stays in your guest room

smoking crack with a convicted felon --

theres got to be a million good reasons for that.

Larry, you got that wrapped up yet?

Diane, I want to give you some token of appreciation

because they make US cover the bad checks we take here.

I think someones waiting for you.

Excuse me.

Heres Larry.

Thank you so much. Let me give you a hug.

I hope I didnt squish them.

Thats all right. Ill see you later.

Robbery -- yes.

Type of premises -- gas station.

Like youre the school dunce, this thing talks to you.

Weapon -- knife.

Assault -- yes.

Ask it to answer.

Let me put the dates in and complete the profile.

Put the dates in

before I punch this thing in its face.

With all the tedious man-hours were being saved,

and yet you threaten this machine.

Yeah, these three are on the money

for the time frame,

plus the description fits his ugly mug.

This with the weak description is the right m. O.,

plus a woman behind the wheel.

Saying the womans

that idiot Morrows cracked-out wife.

We got three fits for this guy robbing gas station attendants.

You cannot imagine what a dufus the husband is

of the woman that is this guys accomplice.

After 4 1/2 months that shes locked up

in the guest room smoking crack with this guy

that returns periodically

throwing proceeds from gas stations into his face

and probably brandishing a bloody knife,

the husbands suspicions become aroused.

Boy, did we luck out. Our system just went down.

Hey.

Hey.

Corrupted file -- whoo.

You lucked out.

Got a second?

Yeah, sure.

You need me, too?

No, thats all right.

Corrupted files.

Makes everything sound so dramatic.

Whats going on?

Darla, at freddys diner?

Id gotten restitution for her on two bad checks,

and I stopped to give her the money.

Im about to leave --

across the street, I know I saw that Harry denby.

The narcotics task force guy.

The guy with him had sunglasses on

and his collar was up,

but I think it was jills ex-husband.

Not dead.

You know, I, um...

I let Jill use my place to meet him,

and that prick stole bobbys ring.

The body in that dumpster had bobbys ring on.

Hows it not him?

Denby took you to the body?

And he said it was Don.

If the job was putting him under deep cover --

if you reached out to denby, would he tell you the truth?

Hed try to screw me and get me to drink with him.

Everything else is a question.

Did he see you this morning?

I dont know.

Im not saying anything to Jill, is one thing.

No.

We shouldnt say anything till we know whats going on.

You going to reach out to denby?

Ill give it a little while, see if he reaches out to me.

Thanks, Andy.

Sure.

Had to do with Bobby -- one of his possessions.

I see.

Yeah, thats what she was discussing.

Thanks a lot.

Sure.

So you want to go check out these gas stations?

Yeah, lets go check them out.

I got a question in my mind if im being bilked.

Im Diane Russell. Can I help you?

My house is being repaired.

I was just concerned if everything was kosher

or im being a fool.

I see. This is my partner Jill kirkendall.

Timothy oleary.

Why dont we talk in the coffee room?

This past week, I laid out $18,000 to those fellas.

All right, well get all your information.

My son used to do for the house,

but hes moved away to palo alto,

and im worried im being a dupe.

Jill: Everyones a dupe sometime or other, Tim.

Good, dont tip me 10 cents,

son of a bitch with full service.

Here. You talk.

Hey -- city detectives. Are you ismail patel?

With 80% severed tendon

because I dont want to be safe behind plastic glass

because this is how I am rich.

Wed like to show you photos and see if you recognize anyone.

For who robs and stabs me, for my 80% severed tendon,

for my genius boss with full-service concept?

Brother.

Look at the photos, Mr. Patel.

Recognize someone, you need to tell US from where.

Or youre going to beat me with a bamboo cane?

Dont put ideas in our head.

There you go now. Have a good look.

Knife-cutting prick-face bastard...

Hey, easy, easy.

Filthy bastard hand damage!

Im taking that for him robbing and cutting you, Mr. Patel.

Here, how about any of these?

F-For driving car!

Aah!

Pig-nose screaming bitch woman!

For a guy with a temper, hes got some good recall.

Ask him why he cuts my hand.

When I give him my money, why he cuts my hand then.

Why -- why --

why -- why --

why she drives away.

Okay, Mr. Patel.

He hurt my hand so bad.

Hurt them, too, for me.

Odds on its those Scottish gypsy hustlers.

Travelers. I want them out of the precinct.

How about the state?

Youd like to get them on video.

On the stand, the old man would get picked apart.

Theyre going by for more money this afternoon?

Buy materials to fix the leakage problems in the basement.

Call taru. See if they can set up video in time.

Sure.

And if you dont collar up,

maybe these guys need to hear

how pretty Pittsburgh is in spring.

I dont know if I could pass for tims niece.

No, I got it.

Detective Russell?

Ill call taru.

Detective denby.

Hi.

Is that right?

Just popped into your head?

Ive been okay.

I said im okay, denby.

Its your dime. Am I supposed to entertain you?

No, that doesnt sound like fun to me.

Look, how about we start with me taking three minutes lost time,

and ill talk to you in front of the station house?

Yeah.

All right.

These are the strangest events

I have ever been associated with.

Easy, Sonya.

Yeah, our sprinklers go off when people tell whoppers.

I cannot believe you let these assholes in.

Thats the price you pay

for consorting with the non-convict element.

I have no idea what that pipe paraphernalia is.

Hank, this one goes in the pokey.

Hank: Sure.

Well consult on your language, Joey,

as soon as it wont make a spectacle.

Then remember I told you to take a douche.

And where am I supposed to go?

Why dont you take Julie Andrews

into interview three while I take a leak?

Ive never pretended I was Julie Andrews.

You had me fooled.

Come on, Sonya. Confide in me who Julie Andrews is.

Hey. You got a minute?

Why dont you close the door?

I need a solid, Baldwin.

Sure.

Im going to be talking

to a guy on the street whos on the job.

His names Harry denby, and I need him followed.

All right.

No way you get hurt on this.

You wouldnt put me there.

Hed recognize anyone else.

If you see him with this guy --

his hair would be red now.

If denby meets him, I want you to call me.

I need to know who this is?

Id rather not say.

Tell me when to be outside.

Yeah, ill let you know. Thanks a lot, Baldwin.

Open?

Joey first?

That hatchet-face broad

got to be 15 years older than him.

Think theres something to that?

Maybe hes a mamas boy.

Maybe dad didnt understand.

Maybe ill go at him like that.

This is bogus.

What, Joey, the room?

Nothing.

Nothings bogus to Joey. To Joe, its all very real.

Yeah. Try throwing me off.

Go ahead, Joe, leap up on the table.

Calling me a monkey. Trying to break me down.

How about the roof? You want US to throw you off that?

I stand a beating, buster. You can count on that in spades.

Who beat you, Joe? How good do you remember it?

cause ive found, as time goes by,

we think we stood them better than we did.

Pissing ourselves, crapping our pants,

crying and begging them to stop --

all that goes hazy.

Dont confuse me with someone youre talking about.

Having trouble concentrating.

Joey, sit down.

Hey, can you explain cutting all those people

after they gave you their money?

Thats what my partners so upset about.

No, your partner,

hes got a, sadistic streak of sadism.

Sure. Make me the issue, Joey.

You inch dick.

You know that poor nitwit that you cut?

He dont get to use that hand again.

Being a towelhead makes it a hate crime.

But you cry about me.

You dont hear me crying.

Joey, just what you did, without extenuation --

the hate-crime aspect -- that gives you 25

without no extenuating circumstance.

Like you would look for those.

Why? You got something on the cutting motive?

Here we go with the extenuating circumstances.

You know that youre a sick, sadistic bastard?

Hey, dont waste your time with me.

You cry on his shoulder.

"Boo-hoo-hoo with my extenuation

and my poor troubles as a toddler."

You ever get burned, asshole?

Dont you call me asshole,

or ill beat you till you beg to die.

Have your father burn you with lit cigarettes

up and down your back?

Is that what happened to you?

That justifies robbing six gas stations

that we know about.

You ever have an addictive drug habit?

I was a hope-to-die drunk for 20 years, you twerp,

and I held an honest job.

Hes going to justify robberies

behind a drug habit.

Just shut up, all right? Just leave me alone!

Im trying to figure the cutting.

You dont know nothing! You dont understand nothing!

Not even the difference between crack and booze!

I understand robbery behind a crack habit,

but call me stupid,

cause I dont understand the cutting.

Here! Here!

Easy, Joey.

He burned me,

and he cut me, all right?

All right, Joey.

And im an American citizen, all right?

You sick, sadistic bastard!

Whats going on, denby?

I like to think of this as our spot.

Boy, you dont let a day go by.

Referring to what? I dont let a day go by.

To you looking bagged.

Well, a day missed loaded

is a day wasted.

Whyd you call me?

I had this sudden urge.

I dont do good resisting those.

Now what?

Now?

I ask you how you been, what you been up to.

Pass.

Okay.

I ask was that you across the street

this morning at freddys?

Yeah. I was at freddys.

You were across the street?

Yeah. I saw you from across the street.

Is that when you got the sudden impulse?

Thats what brought it on.

Denby, you know how stupid this conversation is?

I liked it when you watched me drink.

You should work on being embarrassed.

If you were drawing up a list, though,

wouldnt you put that low?

Im not watching you drink.

And drinking with me --

thats out of the question.

Youre a self-centered prick.

Before my slowness to shame, my self-centeredness?

Things youd like me to work on?

Dont do anything for me, denby.

Dont even move if a car comes.

What an asshole.

Coffee?

No, thanks.

Thanks, Danny.

Certainly.

May I feed your fish?

Be careful.

What did he want?

He knows I saw him.

Acts like all he wants to do is drink with me.

Was he drunk?

I dont think he was.

Made a show of putting a mint in his mouth.

He used to love breathing booze in my face.

If dons alive and denbys got him undercover,

why wouldnt denby cop to that?

Maybe the other guy turned denby.

You saying denbys working with Don?

Its been known to happen.

God. My god.

Whats the matter?

This, this prick. This jerk.

Who?

You know Ronny croyzen from highway?

No.

Stops my cousin for speeding.

When my cousin says shes got family on the job,

croyzen says its already written up.

Complete dickhead.

Unbelievable.

Anyways, baldwins following him.

This is going to be something, you know?

Yeah.

Im not comfortable keeping Sorenson out of it.

Yeah. Ill tell Danny.

Ill tell him right now.

Yeah, cause im not comfortable excluding him.

Its too soon to tell Jill.

Duh.

Caught.

Doing what?

Not drinking coffee.

Being were in the neighborhood,

before, when you brought me coffee,

I specifically did not ask for that.

There. Im done on that subject.

Um...

When jills ex-husband was jammed, Danny,

I got halfway involved

trying to help Jill steer through.

Which youre supposed to do.

Well, I got involved

with that task force asshole denby

and letting Jill use my place to see Don.

It was a mess,

and there was no point handing you a bag

telling you about it.

Was the story right that he jumped protection?

Actually, it looked like Don got murdered

shaking down these dealers he was working for,

but that didnt circulate -- protecting jills kids.

Also the right thing to do.

Now, though, Danny,

it looks like maybe

this denby that verified Don died,

he doesnt have to be telling the truth.

What, the job has got Don under?

Unless dons got denby there.

Does Jill know?

No. Jill doesnt know.

I mean, I cant imagine shed know.

No. Absolutely.

Anyways, this is going somewhere, Danny,

and neither me or Andy wanted to keep it from you.

Wed always be leaving our desks.

Yeah.

Explained the context to me

of your earlier explanation, Diane --

your previous conversation.

So should we go talk to this cracked-out Sonya,

or do you want to linger a while breaking my balls?

After you.

I guess we ought to get ready

to go to Mr. Olearys.

Okay.

Im a mother with children.

What is going on here?

Have a seat, Sonya.

Never been in a police station before.

Had my honeymoon in Bangkok.

Bangkok. No kidding?

Is this the mutt? Al the mutt?

Did al the mutt call the s. P. C. A.?

Yes, Sonya, and we at the dog pound

would like you to know,

you being a mother

and all the places that you vacationed

before you became a skelly, strung-out crackhead

running with some scumbag that robs gas stations

holds no interest for US.

Hes out of his mind!

Sonya, these are gas station attendants

that your boyfriend Joey ficca robbed and cut

over this past month.

Joseph ficca stays at our house

to get back on his feet in the outside world.

The house that al the mutt paid for

and lives down the hall in

while you and Joey smoke crack

with the towels laid out in the guest room.

I have no idea what Joseph ficca does

when he leaves the house.

A station attendant picked out a woman in the car.

Youre her.

It was mistaken identity.

Well, maybe Joey forced you, Sonya.

Maybe you were in that car against your will.

Dont talk about my will.

Everything is against my will right now.

Im in a nightmare hallucination.

Yeah? That must be rough.

My last period of time

has been a horrible downhill fantasy.

Maybe you put the brakes on giving US Joey.

Maybe he made threats against your children

to force you or the like.

I dont know.

I dont know.

I dont know if I can quit.

Hey, stupid...

Joey is a collar no matter what.

He is out as a source regardless.

You might as well give him up.

All right.

All right.

Ill describe his activities.

And youll support me on this?

He threatened the kids!

Did I hear John saying

Harry denby was calling you?

Yeah. -

whats that about?

About denby having a wrong idea

based on thinking with his dick.

Just called out of the blue

to hit on you?

Thats a name I can live without hearing again.

How you doing with that, Jill?

With Don?

What do you mean?

You know, um...

Adjusting.

You know.

Its a big adjustment.

You know how it was with Bobby.

Absolutely.

Not that im saying

Don and I had the same relationship.

No. I understand.

Handling what to say with the kids --

that they shouldnt expect to see him again,

but not saying exactly whats gone on.

Its a real big adjustment.

Yeah.

Anyways...

Thanks for asking.

Sure.

So the leak in the roof is fixed?

Yeah. The roof is completely fixed.

And the wiring?

And the wiring.

But now the basement needs sealing?

Ha ha. So many questions.

Im just so grateful to you.

He told me you said

the house could have caught on fire.

Whole place engulfed in flames within 15 minutes.

You never told me

you had a beautiful niece.

After this, everything should be okay?

I think so. The house is in good shape.

Right here. This is the problem.

Boy. Wow. Look at that.

Is it bad?

The foundation is porous also, Mr. Oleary.

What?

Its like upstairs. Its allowing water in.

If it goes unchecked,

you could saturate your whole substructure.

His substructure?

And thats not good.

Ive seen people let something like this go

because they think its just water seepage,

then six months down the line,

they have the entire house raised up on blocks

and a new foundation put in.

Uncle Tim.

Its a good thing we caught this.

So whats the next step?

We need more supplies.

This is in addition to this check?

Right. Then well get right on it.

Im so glad you came into my uncle tims life.

How about dinner, and well call it even?

Hes terrible.

You want US to get in front with you on this?

In front with US? No, were okay.

You just be backup.

Police, my friend. I think we got a problem.

I just made a delivery, buddy.

Hey, Jimmy!

Police! Freeze! Get down on your knees.

You want more, my friend?

cause I got more for you if you need it.

You all right?

Im good. Thanks.

Gary laird is it?

Or do you prefer Vince Murphy, pat Vaughan,

or Paul Finley?

Garys fine.

Looks like youve made it a whole calendar year

without getting popped for a con.

Im a legitimate repair specialist now.

Id like to know what my cousin and I

have got popped for.

For falling off the wagon, Gary.

You ran a game on Tim oleary

to the tune of $18,000.

My cousin and I provided him

legitimate services that we were paid for.

Actually, Gary, a city building inspector

said no real repair work was done.

Says all you did was silver spray-paint

his roof and wiring.

Im sorry Mr. Olearys unhappy with the work.

Squeezing water on the floor to make it look like a leak --

we got that on videotape.

Maybe we could come to an agreement

adjusting the price down.

Yeah, why dont you adjust it down

to full restitution,

and you and your cousin get on a bus?

There were legitimate costs of materials in that $18,000.

Why dont you throw the spray paint in for goodwill?

I can be back with the cash in a half-hour.

My cousin will stay for good faith.

Is there the smallest chance,

under this enormous, unfamiliar pressure, Gary,

you might leave your cousin

hanging by his thumbs?

Why dont we spare you testing your family loyalty?

Have one of the other scumbags you work with

deliver the money.

We can do it that way, too.

Good, the ostrich.

My suspicions were born out.

And cars could be more than a passing fad.

Hes suspecting that, too.

You spoke with your wife.

Got no appetite. I brought her different sandwiches.

You left them with the guards?

They said theyd keep an eye on them.

Yeah, I wouldnt give them sandwiches another thought.

Did you get your wife a lawyer, Mr. Morrow?

Hes coming to the arraignment toMorrow morning.

Dont you think the judge may toss the charges,

Sonya being held in duress?

The judiciary -- who knows?

Duress how, al? In what sense duress?

He threatened the children, this ficca.

Thats why she had to comply.

Al...

Al of als body repair.

Anyways...

cause I know you look long and hard at life, al,

im going to explain to you that sometimes

US crime stoppers suggest to the perpetrator

some bogus excuse they can use

just to get them to say that they did it.

Then we let the d. A. Take the excuse apart in court.

All theyre left with is their confession.

Whats the connection to Sonya?

Whats the connection, al?

With this scumbag ex-convict she got involved with

from the goodness of her heart

threatening the children so shed have to

smoke drugs with him and Rob that gas station

and the judge tossing the charges out?

Im saying with the d. A.,

you want to keep your legal representation.

Even with the case looking good?

Yeah. You want to keep all your powder dry.

Thank god ive got the means. Moneys not a problem.

Yeah, swell.

Anyways, Mr. Morrow,

probably get home to your kids.

Ill tell you,

I could have wound up today feeling good and guilty,

Sonya in the cell.

I could have felt like a real homewrecker.

Hes married to her, Andy.

Time comes, you face the truth about people.

Hows it going?

Where you been?

Yeah, I was on lost time.

Howd we do in there?

Theyll make restitution, those scummers.

You should have seen your partner on the street.

Yeah?

I employed my anchor takedown

on one of these scummers.

Yeah?

Anyways, you got a minute?

Sure.

Id just as soon not talk under andys prying eyes.

Any prying these eyes were capable of

ended several years ago, pal.

The owl has left the building.

I-I really need to get upstairs.

Whats medavoys anchor takedown, Jill?

Where he wraps his arms around some skels waist

and holds on for dear life?

Im taking the fifth.

Certain circumstances,

"exhaust the fleeing perpetrator"

happens to be very effective technique.

Someone looking to score ought to wait

outside that citibank over on ludlow,

bop denby going in.

How many times did he go in?

Met two different guys at the minetta,

went to the citibank each time afterward.

Someone should wait outside that citibank and bop him.

How about that asshole?

Denby met him 20 minutes ago

around the corner from freddys.

That one gave denby a gristedes bag.

Denby bought a bunch of scratch em lottery tickets

and scratched them on this guys back.

Then they split up.

Couple criminal masterminds.

I guess its a pretty complicated situation

where you cant explain what this was about.

You know, this guy...

It is.

Its, its pretty complicated.

That ones got some ugly dye job.

You dont think half-ass blond-red is his natural color?

Anyways,

thanks ever so much, Baldwin.

Youre welcome.

Thanks a lot.

You mind leaving first?

Sure.

Anyways...

Couldnt help your cousin?

No, his buddy at highway couldnt help.

You mind staying for the restitution? Yeah, I got it.

I got to go home.

Diane: Sure, you go ahead, Jill.

I can work it with Diane.

15th squad.

Night, Jill. Good night.

Good night, Jill.

Take care.

I couldnt for a couple hours.

Some of US still work our jobs, asshole.

Yeah, okay.

I cant wait.

Lets hear about it, tough guy.

Are you all right?

Yeah.

Thanks, John.

Denby: What,

summarizing, Diane, in a nutshell,

can we say about life?

It becomes more tawdry, dangerous,

filled with more stupidity.

Our eyes go.

Faculties in general, decline.

We keep an interest in sex

but begin to shoot blanks.

What we cannot say,

Diane, is that life gets less interesting.

We cant say that

and look at ourselves in the face

as honest men and women.

Could you stand a drug-toss, denby?

Taking that, as I do,

as some weird form of sexual overture,

to hear you make that now that I shoot blanks

is sickening and tragic.

Coke, denby?

You got a romance going now with coke?

Offering two ways more of describing life,

am I right?

You stopped caring if the job catches you?

Two more ways would be "sickening" and "tragic."

Maybe you think youre bulletproof.

No man is bulletproof, Diane --

no person of either sex.

No primate can defy the well-aimed shell.

What are you doing?

What are you doing, denby?

Before you struck me, I was going to say,

given tawdriness,

given our tendency to fall apart,

what we could call moral and personal entropy,

but acknowledging simultaneously

that life keeps its interest,

how about, as we decline,

having comfort as a goal?

For example, what is there to hate

in some person or persons unnamed

having lots of money to drink with

and to otherwise piss away in some exotic locale?

You come into money, denby?

I have had this vision

of unbearable intensity

that I am destined to win the lottery.

Thats how all those cartel boys got rich.

Say I did come into money, Diane.

Would you consider the two of US

scarring our livers

till they were masses of useless fat

in Suriname or the Falkland Islands,

called by the argentineans by some different name

that presently escapes me, or anywhere else

of your choice

which does not extradite to uncle Sam?

I promise you, denby, hurt anyone I care about,

and I am going to ruin your party.

Ill put a bullet in that brain you wasted.

For gods sake, Diane,

lets not lose decorum at this late juncture.

Like friends weve both known,

lets not lose our heads.

Yeah, who was that guy

you showed me in the dumpster that lost his head?

Diane,

theres so much doubt in life.

I thought that was the one thing

we were sure about.

Id like to drink.

I wish I was drunk so I could shoot you right now.

It would thrill me so much

to see you drink, Diane.

I believe ill roll those dice.

We could even live on some cruise ship

that was discreet about where it docked.

Ill kill you.

Look in my eyes, see if im kidding.

Do you really think id care?
