My favorite lake
is Clearwater Lake.

We grew up on Clearwater Lake.

It's crystal clear,
all spring-fed.

It's where we learned how
to do the canoe tests,

where they make you
take a canoe out.

And then an uncle would come out
and tip it over,

and then you had
to tip it right back up

and then bring it to shore.

And then from that point on,

you were allowed
to use the canoe.

the Dora Mills camp?

CHASE: Today we're meeting
the camp owner, Dora Mills.

She was the surgeon
general for Maine.

What I'd like to be able to do

is to curl up again
with a good book

and not feel afraid
of the roof leaking

and to continue
to have a lot of fun

with family
and friends out here.

CHASE: There's one bathroom.

There's two bedrooms
on the first floor

and then a sleeping loft and a
very small galley-style kitchen

that is terribly outdated.

Look at it rain down
in the porch.

We're doing inside demo.

Dora had mentioned
the roof had problems.

Along comes the rain
and accentuated the problems.

We could see exactly
where it was leaking.

And, man, was it leaking.

CHASE: The hidden issue
we don't know about

is how far in
that rot has penetrated.

It was definitely unexpected

to have to rip off
the entire porch roof.

It cuts into our time
and budget.

a $35,000 budget,

and we were gonna take
that as far as we could.

We had hoped to be
able to get into

but running into all

the screened-porch roof,

We kind of had to not address
the kitchen and bathroom,

which, maybe once
she sees what we've done,

she'll want to get it
updated in the future.

as you can see.

We were hoping to have this
place done by October.

We got pushed back.
We're now over our deadline.

So now my team and I are
in here busting it out.

But there was that one time --
the Sturtevant camp.

That one we actually --

and let her know

that we were gonna be over time
because of the weather?

CHASE: So today, the thing
we've been worried about

for the last three weeks
finally happened.

We got a huge snowstorm.

And it is definitely
going to slow us down

and impede our progress.

I'm going
through my phone looking

for Stephanie Sturtevant's
number.

Chase,
this weather is nuts.

Whenever we start a project,

we always try to come in
on budget and on time.

Some things are out
of our control.

We can only work
when it's not like this.

It's always tough to
call the homeowner

and say we're not going
to get the project done

when we need to.

I get to do the fun decisions
and the hard decisions,

so I'll...

Well, the decision
is made for us.

We didn't make the decision.

this decision.

CHASE: Hey, Stephanie.
This is Chase Morrill calling.

So I have some bad news.

Weather has taken the turn
for the worst,

and it's slowing
everybody down,

and it's just
pushed things back.

Can almost
feel them again.

So we need to figure out a plan

for how we want to go
about this, I guess.

Look at that.
Look at all the steam

coming off of them.
They're warming up.

Stephanie was disappointed,
but she also understood.

I mean, this is her family camp.

You know, she's still
excited to see it.

It's just unfortunate
it didn't happen on time.

Wow. Yes.

Remember that camp, though?

I went to Millinocket
to Maine Heritage Timber,

and they pulled those logs
out of the water

to make that cool table.

This is timber.

They dredge up
all these old logs.

When they did
the river drives...

STEPHANIE: Right.

...it'd float them down
the river, and, you know,

a certain percentage would
just sink to the bottom.

So they've been
sitting down there.

They've been preserved
because there's no oxygen,

and so, you know,

they got a little arm
that picks them up.

So it's all different types
of wood,

and it came right
out of this lake in Millinocket.

MAN: They've been sending wood
down these rivers

probably for close to 100 years.

So a lot of it has sunk
to the bottom.

And then we go in with
excavators and stuff

and pull it up.

♪♪

SHAFER: We began this process
extracting wood

out of a 1,000-acre lake
right here in town,

Quakish Lake,
just outside of Millinocket.

Most of this wood is cut
pre-1900 with an ax,

dumped into a river
and flowed down a river

in the spring
when that snowmelt happened.

And it sat in Quakish Lake
all summer long.

And some of it sank.

And we take the wood out.

We were going to sell it
to the mill.

Sadly, the mill shut down.

So we had to find another use
for this wood.

So we bought a saw mill and we
started to make some furniture.

The good news is,
is that because it's been

under the water for so long,
the rich colors

and patinas that have been
ingrained in the wood over time

are something that you just
can't find anywhere else.

So if you're just tuning in,

you're in luck
because tonight we're answering

all the viewers'
most burning questions.

The next question, Sandra
from Illinois wants to know

what it takes
to be a good designer.

I think being a good designer,
you just have to go in

and learn the space,
know what they're feeling,

what their vibe is.

Some camps, you want a fun feel

and some you want
a comfortable feel.

We wanted to keep the theme
of the garage,

but still make it feel
like a comfortable camp.

When I think of a garage,
I think of metals

and wrought iron.

So what we decided to do

was incorporate
those elements into the camp.

And I decided to complement
those elements with cool grays,

blues and metallics.

In coming up
with design ideas for the camp,

I wanted to keep it cozy
and cottagey for her

and also hunting, fishing,
outdoorsy sort of cabin for him.

It keeps that rustic,
campy feel,

but it also feels like home.

We wanted to bring in a lot
of bright, bright colors,

light, bright, lively, fun.

It should go more like this.

There's lots of natural tones.

In terms of decorating,

I'm trying to break up
all the wood.

The wood is beautiful,

but sometimes
can be overwhelming.

So with decoration,
you can complement it.

Here's another one
for you, Ashley.

Erika from Nebraska
wants to know

when you use bold colors
on the camps,

do you get permission
from the camp owners first?

This is a great question, Erika.

So I talk with the homeowners.

I ask them if there are colors
that they --

that I should avoid.

And then sometimes they say,
"I really would like this camp

to be, for instance, blue."

And so we avoid what they hate

and try to give them
what they love.

Ashley brought
her paint choices today

and not really my color choices,

but we've done trim accent walls
in orange,

but never a whole camp
in orange.

ASHLEY: Stop judging.

Just keep on walking
up the hill.

Smalls Falls

of the Appalachian Mountains.

Playing hockey
means a lot to me.

Kids growing up in Maine,
there's a pond, there's a lake,

there's a river
that's frozen everywhere.

There's nothing to do.

Throw on a pair of skates
and hit the pond.

RYAN: We are the lobster capital
state of the nation,

and we make the best
lobster rolls

and Dixie makes the best
fish chowder.

It's just a real simple recipe.

The ingredients
are pretty basic.

Other than that,
it's just the delicious taste

of all the seafood.

What I would like to know

is how many feet from the water
does there have to be

in order to put a deck
on a house in Maine?

If it's a brand-new build,

you have to build
100 feet back,

so the deck can come up
to 100 feet, but no closer.

If it's preexisting...

If it's preexisting,
you can rebuild it for safety.

But you can't increase
the size of that.

You cannot encroach
any closer to the water.

ASHLEY: Is there any way
to extend the deck,

like a little bit bigger
and down here?

You cannot come any closer
to the water.

Why?

That's the law.
Okay.

If you're within 75 feet
of the water's edge

and you have
a fully constructed house,

you cannot encroach
any closer to the water.

Yeah, I know that.

Sometimes they'll let you
take footprints

and add them together.

But, you know,
it's very, very strict

and it's case by case.

MAN: On this one, we were
allowed to build them a patio

that didn't constitute
as square footage for the house,

but actually was usable space.

or it's a little bit
of ground work.

where the camp owners
want to turn the cabin

from three seasons
into four seasons?

We run into that
all the time.
All the time.

And we always
tell them,

"If you're not gonna be here
January and February,

it's not worth making it
a four-season cabin."

Not at all. You have to insulate
everything, then drain it.

Yeah. You have to be worried
about if the power goes out,

do you have
a heat source?

Are your water lines
gonna freeze?

You got to spend
the money to heat it.

Yeah, I mean, most people are
looking to extend the seasons,

you know,
October, November,

you know, come up
a little earlier.

But making a place
four seasons

is a lot of work
and a lot more money.

RYAN:
Man, what a nice spot, huh?

CHASE: So, we are headed
to meet Greg, Denise, and Mo,

My hopes for this camp

are to be able
to come up year-round.

And what we're doing is we're
enlarging the master bedroom

and giving them

It saves on the budget,
it's really easy to install,

We didn't have
many doubts,

but we just can't believe what
they've done with it.

It doesn't look like
the same place.

The nice open, airy feel.

We just love
everything about it.

It's a dream come true.

if all the cabins
get a lot of insulation.

If the camp isn't gonna
be used a lot,

it's not worth
putting in the insulation

because it's just a home
for critters.

But we did do a few
that they spent the extra money

to put in good
spray-foam insulation.

Originally, we weren't
gonna touch the walls,

but the electrician
got in there,

and the fiberglass insulation
was all chewed up.

So we made the decision
to pull it all down.

JEDI: Once we get all
the sheathing off,

we're gonna get
some gloves and a mask on

and clean it all up.

CHASE: We wouldn't be doing
them any favors

by putting back fiberglass
insulation and boarding it over

because it doesn't
seal up the gaps

where all the mice
and rodents get in anyways,

so we decided to go
with the spray-foam insulation

because it seals everything out.

It does a much better job.

-Wow, nice.
-It looks good in here.

-This is beautiful.
-Very clean.

Structurally,
it makes it more sturdy.

And keeps out the bugs, too.
And keeps out the bugs.

we don't have to do it.

you know, a lot of our places
are insulated,

but when they are, you want
to get every nook and cranny.

You know, and these days, if you
insulate a house the right way,

any weakness is gonna evasporate
the problem, you know?

So it's all about condensation,
heat loss.

So you have a nice warm house
like this,

heat's getting through --
Like, see right here?

I can see up in here
that's gonna be a weak spot.

So heat, air's supposed to go
over there, right?

Warm air outside,
cold air inside.

That creates condensation.

In 20 years,
that'll start rotting.

So you got to hit everything
and really be vigilant about it.
