ARE MUTUALLY BOUND.

Lately,

not a day goes by
without mention of a crisis.

Economic and environmental crises,

and social crises too.

An increasing number of scientists

have suggested that solidarity
on a global scale

could be the first step
to changing the course of things.

We have no choice.

What we have to do, today,

is to return to the core values
of humanity:

solidarity, sharing,
giving, receiving and giving back.

These values must be achieved
on a global level

whilst respecting the singularity
of each society.

We came to believe
that life comes down to a competition

in which the best ones win, and so on.

In other words, the most selfish,
the most dominating.

But it's a faulty notion,

one that has long been debunked
by biology.

Competition, predation and cruelty
do exist.

But we also forge countless relations

of vital complementarity.

We must have faith in solidarity.

Everyone can act at whatever level,

and at any time,

can rise to the challenge
to become fully human.

A network for mutual help...

I'd focused on solidarity
for the past four years.

Indigo advocates solidarity.

The platform I developed

lets people share goods
and services for free.

Matthieu Chedid's approach
is akin to my own.

Members of his band Lamomali

come from all over the world,

showing that we can be diverse

and work hand in hand.

These world-famous artists

drew massive crowds
in Brazil, the US, France,

and across the world.

Together,

they recorded an ode to solidarity,

asking me to direct the video.

It was a chance to address
a powerful message.

it was a chance to meet activists
from across the globe,

highlighting their commitment
to solidarity.

And we're trying to get by.

To do our part.

The Big Challenge started with Malik.

He told us: "Listen.

I saw a poor family on the street.

It stirred me so deeply

that I thought we should do something
to help them."

He came up with an idea.

And it got through to us.

Welcome to the Kantés' table.

It seems set for Sunday dinner.

But in a few hours,

the food will be served

to homeless migrants.

The Big Challenge was launched by Malik,

a man from Sarcelles

shocked
by the plight of refugees.

Anyone can do it.

First, we're human beings.

Second, our parents emigrated.

Third, help thy neighbor.

It's in every holy book.

The Big Challenge continues

with other neighborhoods
ready to take over.

Yes! From the Val-de-Marne
to the Val-d'Oise.

It's up to you now.

People went along. They were excited.

It's solidarity.

We're in one
of the most destitute areas in France.

But it's also the wealthiest.

Not economically wealthy.

But we have values of togetherness.

That's our wealth.

Poverty brings us together.

We help each other out.

The first housing projects in the country.

I grew up in the "jungle".

VICTIMS OF STATE NEGLECT

Riots took place here in 2007.

Officers were beaten up.

The town was sacked.

The crash between a motorcycle
driven by two teenagers

and a police car was extremely violent.

The boys were not wearing a helmet.

The paramedics were helpless.

The neighborhood flared up
for six hours of violence.

Police forces were shot at
with real bullets.

A new night of unrest in Villiers-le-Bel.

82 policemen were injured,
six of them badly.

And... I was there, in the middle
of all that. See?

Three months later
an anonymous informant reported me.

I was accused

of shooting at the police

and attempting to kill a police officer.

I went from the hope

of becoming a soccer player,

to ending up in the pit.

The nightmare began.

It lasted 29 months,

during which I was locked up,

at the age of 20,

in one of the toughest prisons,

and sent to isolation for a year.

I was confined
to a 95 square feet cell, alone.

I thought: there's no justice, no peace.

An innocent in jail.

It was nothing to them.

Six months went by.

I thought it was over.

I thought my life was ruined.

Might as well go all in.

Fuck the system.

Fuck the judges. Fuck the police.

Fuck the prosecutor. Fuck everything.

I met a librarian. He said:

"I know you're mad. Read this book."

Reading wasn't my thing.

I didn't want to read.

Books are full of crap.

He said: "You'll see.

Read this one. You'll like it."

I started to read.
First one page, then another.

It was interesting. I devoured the book.

Book after book, I devoured them.

All of these men wrongfully jailed,

and serving long sentences.

What blew me away,

was reading Nelson Mandela's work,

still standing after 27 years in jail,

ready to negotiate.

He wanted it.

He put some things aside
and let his heart speak out.

Poverty is a cause mobilizing

volunteers across the world.

Violence against women is another.

They are a blight plaguing our societies:

feminicides.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Brazil is among
the most impacted countries.

Faced with this problem,
women are uniting and fighting back.

I'm Panmela Castro.

I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro.

As a child, my mother enrolled me
in painting and drawing courses.

And later, when I became a teenager,

that's when I started to draw graffiti.

We're here for a special reason,

the launch of the Dororidade mural.

This mural graffiti was thought of

and painted by Panmela Castro.

Let's hear it for her

because she deserves it.

I wanted to tell you a bit
about how this all happened.

When I was the age
of many of the girls here,

I got married.

So I had this experience
with domestic violence

and I didn't want other women
to go through the same.

So in 2006, when the Maria da Penha Act

was passed for women's rights,

I used what I had, my graffiti and my art,

to help other women.

And so, over the years,

we founded the "Nami Network",

doing this work in schools and communities

to promote the "Maria da Penha Act".

"Dororidade",

where did the idea come from,
what does it represent to you?

We already hear a lot about sorority,

which is this union,
this mutual support among women.

"Dororidade" is a concept

about the pain suffered from machismo

and from racism.

So this caught up with all the women.

Women of all races.

So we have Afrograffity,
which is a completely free program

where women can register on our website

and attend graffiti classes
for eight months

and learn about their rights

with facilitators
specialized in these matters.

SILENCE MEANS CONSENT

The Panmela Castro mural,

here in front of the police precinct,
is a gift for all of us.

So the mural is fortifying,

Unfortunately,
Brazil is the fifth country in the world,

where women are mostly killed
just for being women.

Tatiana Spitzner was found dead

on July 22.

The garage footage

shows that the man who assaulted Tatiana

was her husband,
Luis Felipe Manveiler,

Security cameras
show an aggressive man.

Their fight continues in the elevator.

25 minutes
after arriving at the apartment,

she falls from the building.

At three o'clock in the morning,
Luis Felipe is in the elevator,

taking
the woman's body back home.

Four minutes later,
the suspect is wearing another shirt

and he's cleaning
the blood marks left in the elevator.

At 3:08 a.m., he escapes.

It's a patriarchal society,
a sexist society,

with misogynistic men,

and above all, violent people.

I heard many say:
"Sure, I beat her but she's my wife."

They feel they have the right to do that.

When women decide to go to the police,
they've been suffering for years.

I've had experience
with domestic violence.

I thought that, as a woman, in a marriage,

I had to endure it,

because it was already
in the culture of my family,

of my neighborhood,
of the people I lived with.

And then, one day,
he closed the whole house,

so no one would hear
what was going to happen.

Then he played loud music

and started hitting me.

He hit me, punched me, kicked me a lot.

He assaulted me for about two hours.

And his mother saw it
but she wouldn't help me.

She said: "You have to hit her
because she didn't make lunch."

I studied and I had a job.
I only came home at night.

So that no one would suspect
that I got beat up,

he bought me a cast

and put it around my leg

as if I had broken it.

But actually,
it was to prevent me from running.

Running away from home.

So I was locked in the house for a week,

getting healed quietly

and hoping I could soon go to my mom's.

He had a cell phone, I didn't.

And one day,
he left his phone in the house.

The next day,

my mom showed up
with two hefty black guys.

After that happened, I moved away.

I filed a complaint,

but it never resulted in anything,
because there was no "Maria da Penha Act".

It didn't work out.

and that's why she got killed,
for giving these women a voice.

People protested at school meetings,

arrested and they disappeared.

But we got to this point...

I don't want that for my daughters.

The rights that we have today,
a lot of people fought before us

and now we are on the front line.

I didn't start this yesterday.
It's been ten years, everyone knows.

It's an ugly business,
that's what I'm saying: it's ugly, now.

That's why people need us.

My God, just thinking about it...

I'm not going to stop my work.

I'm not afraid of being killed tomorrow,

because I believe

that it is better to live in freedom,

to be able to express yourself,

to do what you want,

to have a full life,

than to live oppressed for too long.

When I was young,

it was difficult

to find work and to find a wife.

Each time I proposed,

I was turned down:

I'm graduating high school.

It's hard to see the exercise we're doing

when it's up on the board.

We all suffer
from incurable short-sightedness.

We need funding

to buy glasses

for everyone.

We make our own local sunscreen.

Business owners suffer from stereotypes,

considered to be wealthy individuals

walking around with cash.

to grasp the law.

I was blown away by the extras,

the true protagonists.

They sing, dance and bring joy.

We were a thousand people there.

Amazing.

I don't like to dance, but I just had to.

And the atmosphere warms up.

This togetherness, so to speak,

arises out of solidarity.

The word "solidarity" is compelling.
It's our purpose.

What I can remember
from the day of the clip

is being very tense, and then I relaxed,

I danced a lot with people.

Breaking this barrier
was difficult for me.

The clip is about solidarity.

But we are mostly united among ourselves

and here we have to break
a barrier of colonization.

There are lots of barriers

against Europeans and the Americans

who bring and force their culture.

The original singers
behind the song "Solidarité"

decided to donate
their royalties to UNICEF

and to the local activists
featured in the film:

Mara, Panmela, Afaq, Broulaye, and Tamara.

Afaq continues to take pictures
and write socially committed poetry.

She wants to put together
an exhibition in the US

dedicated to the cause of refugees

and all those fleeing poverty
and military violence.

Mara and the Big Challenge
are still in a difficult situation.

The organization plans to grow
with the support of alternative funding,

hoping to pursue its work
alongside migrants

on the streets, in and around Paris.

Thanks to Ashoka,
Panmela and her Nami Network were able

to receive the funds needed
to expand their graffiti school.

The organization can now
accommodate 100 women a year

from underprivileged areas
of Rio de Janeiro.

Broulaye and the members of AMPA
were provided with fitted eyewear

and have learned to manufacture sunscreen.

The organization also plans
to acquire sewing machines,

so that albinos may learn a trade
and make a living for themselves.

Tamara and the organization
Chinese from France, French from China

offer legal aid,
including to people like Sonjian.

The trial against the murderers
of the young man's father

made French legal history:
for the very first time,

a jury cited the notion of racist crime
as an aggravating factor

in a case involving a member
of the Asian community.

The community
of the mutual help platform "Indigo"

mobilized many of its members

to feature in the "Solidarité"
music clip.

Every day, thousands of people use the app

to exchange things and favors for free.

To all nonprofit organizations,
activists,

and citizens working for the common good

and to all who will join them tomorrow.

Our lives are connected.

Modern societies have no choice
but to stand united.
