Weather happens to be king.

Right now, it's kind of like,

a little broken blue,
but a lot of fog there.

A lot of fog there.

And that means I have
to gauge how many days
of fuel do I have left.

Not weeks, days.

NARRATOR: Kavik River Camp
serves as a remote fuelling
station and emergency depot,

197 miles above
the Arctic Circle.

As Kavik's sole proprietor,
Sue Aikens must ensure that
the camp is equipped with fuel

and power to serve clients,
and for her survival

in the harsh conditions
of the tundra.

SUE: Shit.

Shit.

Fuck. Well, generator
just crapped out on me.

That was a pretty quick
drop in the electrics.

Well, never ends.

(GROANS) Generator has
a God Box that tells you
what happened.

"Why did I shut myself down?"
Well, high water temperature.

First thing I notice when
I'm looking at the gen is,
that there's a lot of fluff.

Maybe a little bit of oil.

This is the radiator
for the coolant.

Well, logic says first place
I gotta look is in here,

and you can see it looks like
a fur carpet in there,

something straight out
of the '70s. A lot of fluff,
a lot of fuzz there.

Because it's dry,
because we're
getting closer to winter,

it's gonna collect everywhere.

Simple fix. I just gotta
give it time, cool down,

get the fuzz from the back
side of that radiator,
and then work on it.

Tear it apart and clean it.

So, camp will go without power
for a little bit today.

Doesn't matter what I had
lined out for my day,
it just changed.

So just like the weather
changes in a heartbeat,

you can never time
a breakdown.

I'll wait till it cools down,

start wrenching on it,
tearing it apart, cleaning it,
and putting it back together.

CHIP: Everything has its use
and its limits,

and I take them to the limit.

Oh, excellent.

So I'm gonna make a frame
tent on a sled.

I live here
in Noorvik, Alaska.

I have a permanent house here.

And I live in camps,
rotating around,

back and forth, for seven,
eight months of the year.

We travel pretty far,

and we tent out a lot.

So, it's kind of our job
to utilise the resources
of the area.

We gather stuff,
we hunt it down,
and we fish for it.

There's all kinds
of stuff we do.

My wife acquired title
to some properties
that her family has.

The family still uses it,
everybody's still welcome to.

But everybody's done it in
tents, and everybody's done it

with nothing more
permanent than a cache.

And, um, we're gonna do
something more permanent
than a cache down here.

These are the
eight-foot crossbeams.

I see a lot of uses for this,

so I'd like to make this thing
to where it's gonna last
at least a good 10, 20 years.

I never did take a carpentry
class or do anything in those
kind of trades.

All this stuff is self-taught.

If I didn't do this, I'd have
to pay someone, you know,
35, 50 bucks an hour.

This will be able to go from
place to place,

not as, like, a regular sled
with every ride
of a snow machine

but as something that I would
take from one place to another
and leave it there.

I wouldn't play basketball
on this exactly, but, um,

looks like it's definitely
gonna do the job that
I need it to do.

Takes time, but it's coming.

And to tell you the truth,
it's a lot of work.
It's a ton of work.

And this is the time of year
to get it done.

JESSIE: Whenever
you're dealing with
four hours of daylight

and extremely cold
temperatures, tasks tend
to slow down.

The time up here
is everything.

(DOGS BARKING)

Just getting ready here.

I'm gonna redo
my whole dog yard,

so, got a lot of stuff that
needs to get moved out
of the way,

dogs that need to get moved.

Something that really
needs to happen

so I can get focused
on training here.

into early winter.
The ground's freezing.

Can't take this top layer
of this ground off

with these stumps out
in the frozen ground,

so timing's everything,
as with anything up here.

-MAN: Hey, Jess.

JESSIE: Hey,
how you doing, man?

You ready?

My friend's
willing to help me right now.

That's huge, because this job
that he's doing for me

is not something that
I could do myself.

I don't own a piece
of machinery.

(DOGS BARKING)

I've got way too many dogs to
just have dogs strewn all over
the place in the woods,

tripping in holes.

I mean, I'm liable to break
my leg out here

in one of these holes this
winter and end my whole
mushing career.

This has gotta become
professional, organised,

so I can deal with
it efficiently.

To actually be able to see
all my main dogs

that I'm gonna be racing
this year, in one spot,
is gonna be an exciting thing.

Everything in rows.

It's gonna look amazing,
and it's gonna make
my life 10 times easier.

GLENN: No matter how
long I'm out here,

I learn and I also still
make mistakes.

Time to go moose hunt.

Ammunition.

It's helpful to have
some cord with me.

This is the big hunt
of the year.

When I pull that trigger,
that's six months' food
right there.

And I only get one chance.
A couple weeks here
in the fall. That's it.

It's time to go get a moose.

NARRATOR:
For Glenn Villeneuve,

hunting for moose is his most
critical hunt of the year.

A single moose will provide
Glenn with a six-month
supply of meat and protein,

to help him survive
through dark winter.

GLENN: So I'm heading around
the lake right now hunting,

and what's different this year
from most years is I got snow
on the ground.

I've never hunted moose with
this much snow on the ground
right at the start.

If I had my choice,
I'd probably rather not
have the snow,

just 'cause it makes a lot
of noise walking in it.

Look at this. Just came
upon this moose track.
This is really exciting.

A large moose walked
right through here,
and it wasn't that long ago.

But moose travel fast.

That moose could be
a long ways from here,

but I wanna come around
to the top of this little hill
where I get a better view.

It's good to know
there's a moose around.

(WHISPERING) I'm thinking
about the terrain here,

because one of the biggest
challenges of hunting moose

is getting the moose
back home.

He walked right by here.
Maybe I can get him to turn
around and come back.

I just know I can't keep
moving further away
from the lake.

I have to be very
careful about that.

Right now, I'm already 100
yards from the lake or more,

and if I get any further away,
that's just that much further
I'd have to move this moose.

I haven't heard anything
for several minutes,

I'm gonna try something
a little different.

I'm gonna make a cow call.
See if that interests it.

(VOCAL MOOSE CALLS)

(WHISPERING)
Doesn't seem too interested.

It's my first day hunting,
so I'm gonna keep moving now,

just look around and see
what else is going on.

(NORMAL VOICE) Walked about
a mile this afternoon,
first day of hunting.

Saw a few squirrel tracks,
one snowshoe hare track,

one moose track.
That's typical.

It's very hungry
country up here.

(GLENN SPEAKING)

(WHISPERING)
Right over the hill
there's a big bull.

Right here.
I can see a big bull
through the trees.

Come on.

Oh, my safety. Jesus Christ.

Can't shoot now,
he's right behind that tree.

There he goes. Damn.

(VOCAL MOOSE CALLS)

(SIGHS)

He's outta here,
I can't believe it.

I actually went to pull the
trigger and had the safety on.

That was a nice bull.

Okay, there he is.

(VOCAL MOOSE CALLS)

Nah, he knows
I'm a person now.
There he goes.

A lot of times you just have
a second where you got a clean
shot between two trees,

and I was following him
and he actually came right
between the trees.

I had my safety on.

Really messed up on that one.

It's possible that he'll come
back down in a minute,
but I think he got spooked.

It's important to be patient.

(NORMAL VOICE)
I don't think he's gonna come
back down here tonight,

and I'm not gonna follow him
back further into the woods,

'cause it gets too difficult
to bring him down to the lake
after I kill him.

If it was easy,
it wouldn't be hunting.

I'm gonna get up early
tomorrow first light,
head back out, who knows.

Maybe I'll get a second chance
at that same moose.
Maybe I'll find another one.

JESSIE: I sometimes feel like
this is relentless after
working my butt off,

but then I wake up again
in the morning and I'm just
ready to go.

It's looking amazing
out here, man.
This is like a 180 change.

It was a lot of work getting
this ground all prepped,
you know, took some time.

Totally worth it.

Now I got 50-some-odd posts
to pound for these dogs,

and I gotta do it now,
because ground's freezing.

All right. That's post number
one, right there. That's the
height that I'm looking for.

They're seven-foot posts,
and I'm gonna put 'em
three feet into the ground

with four feet sticking out,
and off of that

will come a swivel that they
can just run in circles.

Then all the dogs
can associate

and I can fit all these
dogs into this area
that I couldn't before.

One down, 49 to go.

(EXHALES)

Good way to get the blood
flowing in the morning.

End of the day, I'll have
posts for all my dogs.

And I'll definitely have more
muscle in my arms.

(EXHALES)

No way to warm up out here
other than a little hard work.

This is a long time coming,
you know, like, I've imagined

setting my dog yard
up like this for years.

So to see it transpire after
being in Alaska for 10 years,

for me it's like a long
steep climb, and like,

I feel like I'm about
to plateau here.

Age group of the dogs
is coming together.

The dog yard's
coming together.

I have a place that I can
be permanent at and focus
on my dreams.

This is gonna be my last post.

(SIGHS) Now I can
get my dogs all in here,
and get their bowls all out,

and get 'em set up
for the night.

SUE: Life is all about
constant state of improvement.

I'm never totally content.

I always wanna
do a better job.

Bigger, badder, bolder.

I kinda had intentions
to take it easy today,

get a shower,
get my laundry done,

and just rest the wing.

And about halfway through
that thought...

(GROANS) The generator went
down. And there's a little
brain box on the gen,

and it tells me why it shut
itself off. And it was for
overheating of the water.

Let's start seeing
what we can do.

(HELICOPTER WHIRRING)

Those are helicopters.

(SIGHS)

I can't have an air-to-ground!

My electrics are down,
so I don't have communications
with him right now.

My handheld air-to-ground
is not serviceable.

He is coming over.

Hey, buddy.
Love to talk to ya.
Fucking can't.

That's a damn big helicopter.
Come down and get fuel,
'cause you'll take a bunch.

That helicopter can suck down
the fuel. That's, you know,
$5,000 or $6,000 sale in fuel,

each time it comes
in for a drink.

That's a US Coast Guard
search and rescue helicopter,
so hopefully nobody got hurt.

I need extension cords.
I need to have communication.

He's circling, which means he
wants to communicate with me.

My battery bank is working.

So whenever that happens,
you gotta think on your feet,

plug into your
alternative energy.

That's what I gotta

I'm a safety resource.

My job to be here is safety.
That's why I'm effing here.

From a business point of view,
that bird, with one meal,

can get $5,000, $6,000
worth of fuel.

In a year where I've been
injured and not making revenue
like I should, um, that hurts.

There's nobody to blame for
the lack of communication
but me.

My backups have
to have backups.
And I let myself down.

So back on that generator,
get it up and running
as quickly as I can.

Get the electrics going
as quickly as I can.

All right. Switch on.

-Start it up.
-(GENERATOR STARTING)

There is air coming through,
exhaust coming out.

Time for me to put
the power around the camp
and start checking.

Lights are coming on.

Light is on.

(BREATHING HEAVILY)

Okay, lights are on in here.
Fan is on. The gen
is running now.

We're running 119 over 61.

Blood pressure of the
generator, 120 over 60,
is perfect.

So 119 over 61, I'll take it.

I'm getting the fuel that is
gonna enable me to make
it through the winter.

That fuel plane, I have to be
able to communicate.

I mean, you saw what happened
when I couldn't communicate
with the Coast Guard.

No idea what they needed,
no idea what they wanted.

All's I know is
I lost a potential sale

and made myself look bad
for a safety depot.

Can't help a breakdown,
but God damn it,
I need a better method.

CHIP: We make our own stuff.
We're always experimenting
and trying new things.

If you don't mind giving me
a hand for a minute here,

I need some lifting.

NARRATOR: To accommodate
his family's
nomadic lifestyle,

Chip will construct
a mobile tent frame.

Built on a sled, the tent
frame will be transportable,

and serve as a more permanent
structure for their newly
inherited land.

TING: Not bad.
CHIP: Not too bad.

While it's light and easy
to do, I'm gonna flip it over
and I'll shoe the bottom.

Wow! So, you sure
got a lot done.

You guys still gonna mess
with them nets today?

-I think the whitefish
are going by.
-Yeah.

We're gonna be setting
our whitefish net out
by the river.

Usually about this time,
we're driving our snow
machines over the frozen ice,

but it ain't freezing yet and
the fish are still running,

so we're just gonna
go on ahead and go
throw this net out,

and see what we can catch.

CHIP: I tacked down the first
plastic runner on the bottom
of the wooden runner.

It's called a shoe.

And what it does, it lets this
have absolutely no friction.

It just slides
right over ice and snow.

(WHIRRING)

AGNES: Okay, honey!
We're gonna go set
the net now!

TING: My mother and I
are about to go set

a whitefish net
down at the beach.

And, uh, before it freezes up,

we wanted to go get
the whitefish that have
the eggs in them.

AGNES: Right here, we'll sink
our took for our post.

And then we'll go straight
out that way.

Usually this time of the year,
we're already fishing
on top of the ice, but uh,

times are changing
and have to adapt,

so here we are just putting
the ice net where
there is no ice.

Now let's feed
the rope out slowly.

Don't get your hands caught!

I'm tying a buoy on here
so the net will be marked,
so nobody will run it over.

Looks like it's set pretty
good. There's, um,
not really any tangles.

One, two, three, go.

TING: See, I knew
that was a fish already!
There's a fish right there.

First fish, Mom. Look!

AGNES: That's the kind
of fish I want, whitefish
with eggs in 'em.

Now we could just go home,
and go have whitefish dinner,

and go check if your dad
needs help tipping
the sled back over.

TING: Yeah.

GLENN: Details.
Small things can really
mess you up out here.

It's real early in
the morning.

It's just starting
to get light out.

I like to start hunting first
thing, as soon as it gets
light enough to hunt.

NARRATOR: In order to
survive the long winter,

Glenn relies on
harvesting a moose before
the freeze sets in.

After missing
an opportunity yesterday,

his window to obtain
this crucial prey is
getting smaller.

(WHISPERING)
The important thing
is to get an early start.

'Cause it takes a lot of time
to find a moose around here.

Wintery morning out here.

Hard to believe
that it's not even fall yet.

With this brand new snow on
the ground, it'll be real easy

to tell how fresh
the tracks are.

That's one advantage of it.

(VOCAL MOOSE CALLS)

This is one of the best areas
where I hunt for moose.

And there's not a single
moose track here today
in the snow so far.

Gotta cover a lot of territory
to find a moose out here,
they're few and far between.

I can't believe
I forgot that safety.
Such a simple mistake.

But it cost me that moose.

And there's not a whole lot
of margin for error out here.

Who knows, I might not
get another chance
at a moose this season.

(MOOSE CALLING)

That's a cow moose.

I can only hunt bull moose.

That's the regulation
in order to protect
the moose population.

I just heard a cow
on the other side,

but that gets me excited
even though I'm not
hunting for cows,

because I know
at this time of year,

where there's a cow,
there's likely to be a bull.

This is the time of year
when they're mating.

(GLENN WHISPERING)

(WHISPERING)
Fresh moose tracks.

Might be able to catch
up with it, might not be
too far away.

These are real fresh tracks.
I can tell by the snow.

I heard the cow calling.

This could be a bull headed
to her right now.
I'm gonna follow it.

That's a bed right there.
This is where she was
bedded down.

It's a cow. She's feeding on
these willows.

Fresh moose scat
right here in the track.
This moose has just been here.

Oh, there's the cow.

Bull might be right around.

When he realises that this cow
is down here, and he hears me
making bull noises,

he'll think I'm a little runt
bull, come down here and
try and chase me off.

(VOCAL MOOSE CALLS)

I'm tracking this cow.
She just keeps going further
and further from the lake.

It's not gonna happen tonight.

There's no way I can move
a big bull from up here
all the way down.

I'm gonna have to head
back down to the lake,
keep hunting down there.

I just walked probably
five miles,

and I came across
one fresh moose track.

Takes a lot of time to find
a moose, takes a lot
of patience out here.

JESSIE: You only got
so much energy in a day,

gotta use it correctly.

Time's a priceless
commodity in Alaska.

(DOGS BARKING)

Well, it snowed
pretty good last night.

More than I thought
was gonna happen.

I gotta get
the dog houses set up

because it's snowing
and dogs don't need
to be out in wet snow.

They need shelter, and that's
my priority right now.

And once I get this done,
I can get myself set up

to start making the swivels
and get this project complete.

(WHIMPERS)

Copper. It's your house!

This is amazing, you know.

All the posts are in,
you know, I'm getting
the dog houses out.

It's snowing,
it's time to mush.

Got my dog houses set up now,
so now I can walk through
my rows freely.

I'm gonna get
my swivels set up, that
way as it snows deeper,

I don't have to dig the chains
out and raise them, or...

The dog will never
be restricted.

One of these all assembled
would probably cost
about 50 bucks.

For me, like, putting it
together myself, it comes
out to be more like 20.

So I got these done.
Time to dish 'em out to
the dogs here.

Something to get excited
about, guys. Yeah.

Yeah, this is like putting
the finishing touches on
a giant project here

that I've been
waiting a long time for.

This is a better system for
the dogs, that way they can
run in circles and exercise.

Takes a lot for these dogs
to give you a 100% every
day throughout the winter,

so you gotta ask for the same
out of yourself.

This is what it's all about.

I'm gonna have a lot more time
this winter to be on the trail
training my dogs now,

because taking care of them
is gonna be a ton easier.

Looking at this, I mean,
it just looks amazing,

all these rows
of dogs, happy dogs.

This is the kind of home
these dogs deserve.
I'm proud of this.

SUE: The me from yesterday
is not the me for tomorrow.

communications restored,

a plane carrying Sue's winter
fuel supply is finally able
to land at Kavik.

SUE: It is always a relief
to see that the fuel
plane is here.

That's gonna give me
just enough fuel,

if I don't go crazy on it, to
heat my Twinkie this winter.

Hey guys, how you doing?
How many gallons of Jet A
did you get?

PILOT: Uh, 3,200.
SUE: 3,200? All right.

The nice thing about getting
your fuel in winter?

Like everything when
it's cold, it shrinks.
When it's hot, it expands.

I can comfortably fit more
into my bladder in the winter
than I can in the summer.

We're all good here.

The trick with getting
the fuel in, you try not to
order it when you're low.

You don't wait until you're
almost out to order it.

But Mother Nature has had
a lot of other plans.

I've had the fuel on order
for quite a while,

but you know, we've had a good
nine, ten-day stretch of just
non-flyable weather.

This time of year you're
juggling the fates.

I've ratcheted
the amount tight.

I'm working on
limited funds this year.

A lot of financials went out
to get the old bod fixed up,

so it's gonna be
tight this year.

(GRUNTS)

on heat,

I've gotta run a little bit
on the short end of it.

So I may let myself get
a little colder.

before the river freezes.

is freezing, eh? No ice?

So me and Ting are just
heading back out to the net.
We set the net last night.

There's a whole new day,
and we hope there's enough
fish out there, whitefish.

The net's still there!

Hopefully there'll be
quite a few fish in it.

It already looks like there's
quite a few salmon right here,

and there's quite
a few whitefish.

I'm gonna take my driving
jacket off.

Looks like we're gonna be busy
for the rest of the evening.

So this is lots of cold fun.

Oh, look at this.

Got lots of eggs.

I'm kind of glad
the ice went away.

We came back
from our summer camp
and went caribou hunting

and here I am, having another
chance to go out fishing.
I might as well take it.

This is a spawned out salmon.

So what we have here is
a real good catch.

Couple tubs, so, uh,
we're happy.

So now that we got a couple
tote loads of fish,

we're gonna head back home and
go see if Chip needs help with
his, uh, tent frame.

hunting grounds up here.

Game is scarce.
That's the reality
living up here.

looking for a moose.

Day after day, this takes
a lot of patience.

The lake's already starting
to freeze up in the shallows.
Could pose some problems.

Typically when I kill a moose,

I go back to my camp,
get my canoe, and use
that to get it home.

This year, that could
be a problem.

I'll cross that bridge when
I get to it though.

I gotta find a moose first.

the forest like a moose.

I gotta sound like a moose.

I just came across a moose
track. This probably was
laid down last night.

There's a little bit of snow
that fell into the track.

It was snowing
a little bit last night.

But it's pretty fresh.
When I walk in this track,
it's a long stride.

Look at this track.
This is a big moose track.

I want this moose.

I'm gonna follow this track,
and I'm gonna try to find him.

I got a hunch this moose
might not be too far away.

Look at the length
of that stride.

That's a good-sized animal.

I'm six feet tall,
I got fairly long legs,

and I have a hard
time stepping in this
moose's tracks.

This is a big moose.

I want that moose.

(VOCAL MOOSE CALLS)

I really need a moose.

(MOOSE GRUNTS)

Got him.

I probably walked
about 30 miles

in the last five days
to get this moose.

It was a lot of work walking
around in this snow.

Look at that beautiful moose.

Yeah, he's dead. Look at that.

Six months' meat right there.

First thing I gotta do
is start a fire.

I need some light.

Finding a moose,
getting a shot at it,
killing it,

that's all hard work, but
that's just the beginning.

Now I have to get this moose
cut up and back to my camp.

Okay. I got a big animal
here. A lot of weight
to move. (GRUNTS)

It's gonna take a lot of work,
I'm gonna be up all night.

So I gotta get started.

It's a big animal,
and you gotta cut in
just the right place

to get stuff to come apart.

Very tough hide,
this is a sharp knife.

For me, this is the most
important kill I make
all year long.

One moose like this is enough
meat to last me six months.

That's a lot of food
right here, and it all
paid off tonight.

I was getting a little
concerned, it's getting
late in the season.

I wasn't sure I was gonna
find a moose this year.

But I did.

Well, I got the moose
all cut up.

It's in manageable pieces
that I can move.
I gotta head back to camp now.

I've been up for 22
hours, I walked six
or seven miles today.

I've gotta head
back down to camp,

get a little rest, come back
up with my sled first thing
in the morning.

CHIP: Part of it's keeping
it real, and the other part
is, uh, thinking ahead.

Having a form of imagination
going on here.

Oh, wow!

-Hey, there.
-You guys catch fish?

TING: Yeah.
AGNES: Couple totes.

CHIP: Whitefish?
AGNES: Salmon.

You get a salmon? How many?
Oh, wow. A big chum.

-(GRUNTS)
-AGNES: Looks like
a pretty good dinner, huh?

CHIP: Yep. Those'll be
excellent if you bake 'em.

AGNES: Pretty good
tent frame.
CHIP: You like that?

Good job!

-CHIP: You think so?
-Yeah.

That's higher than I thought
it was gonna be.

It'll give you storage
space up above. I figure
if we're gonna do this,

we're gonna do it right
the first time,

so I figure the best thing
I can do for you is to make
as much room in here...

-Yeah.
-So I'm thinking right here
is gonna be a big old bed.

There'll be a nice window.

We could even put a window
like over here too.
Put like a table here.

Some shelving,
place to hang our stuff.

Maybe even over here
we could have a sink
or a place to cook,

if you wanna make this
into a cook shack.

And up top of here,
we'll make things for storage.

Looks pretty good to me.

I'm at a point to where I can
do just about anything.

I got up the structure
I wanted to get up.

I'm really lucky that uh,
the freeze-up went away
and it stayed warm.

So I kind of beat
the freeze-up.

The weather gave me a window
and it's pretty nice.

This one will be ready to go
once we got some decent
ice down there,

and before the big snows come
and make it real rough,

we'll be able to take this
right down to camp.

Probably before Christmas.
We could finish her out
down there.

-Sound good?
-Yep.

-Let's go eat some
of your whitefish, huh?
-Yeah.

-Awesome.
-Yeah, that's what I think.

Ready for dinner, Qutan?

CHIP: Whitefish.

CAROL: Wait, is that
a whitefish?
CHIP: Yep.

They're both whitefish,
and they both
have eggs in 'em.

This is our, um, first catch
of the whitefish
with eggs in 'em.

We went and put a net
out yesterday,

and today we checked it, and
now we're having fish dinner.

(ALL LAUGHING)

Well, this here is the end
result of some

pretty good white fishing
if you ask me.

They got, uh,
really nice fish.

But, um, these ladies got to
use a boat and go out
white fishing.

Usually this time of year,

there'd be ice
out on the river,

so thawing out helped me out.
I got to go out here
and have an easy build,

and my wife got to go out
and have an easy net set

and an easy net check.

I think I saved a considerable
amount of time by assembling
the frame here.

It's been pretty good so far.

We'll just see how it keeps
chugging along.
