- Meet Chanel, an aspiring model from LA

who recently lost a modeling job

because of a hair appointment from hell.

- My name is Chanel. I'm here to see Tamar.

- Okay, awesome.

- Chanel wanted her long dark hair

to be transformed to blonde highlights with extensions

like influencer Sofia Jamora,

but her hair got completely chopped

when her stylist Amber caused it to break off.

- It was like a mullet.

The whole top layer of my hair

all around was gone,

and it felt like horse hay.

- Chanel has a new photo shoot in Bali,

and she needs to get her look back,

but first,

she must confront Amber on why she left her hair in shambles.

I'm kinda here for your outfit, honey.

- Yes, Chanel, this is my good friend

and A-list celebrity hair stylist, Johnny Wright.

- How are you doing? - Good, how are you?

- I read your story,

and I was telling him a little bit about it.

Can you tell us exactly what happened?

- I went to the salon with my mom.

She was getting her hair done,

and the salon owner was doing her hair.

So I was telling her, you know, I have this photo shoot

in Bali I'm going to. I wanna change up my hair

and do, like, a Sofia Jamora look.

Long blonde extensions with highlights, you know?

And she said, "Oh, yeah."

Like, "No problem. We can get that done for you."

- So this is you and your mom's hair stylist?

- Yes. So I booked an appointment

with the salon owner,

and the owner passed me off

to a stylist I've never met before...

- Hmm. - Which was Amber.

- So you was under the impression that

the owner was doing your hair. - Yeah.

The whole entire time. - Okay.

- So, I talk with Amber

and I sit down in the chair,

and then she puts a caramel base in my hair, I assume,

with lightener.

So she puts it all over my head,

and I'm sitting in the chair,

and she goes, "I'll be right back,"

and she walks out of the hair salon.

- What? For how long?

- Thirty-five minutes.

My head started to get, like, a weird sensation on it,

and she came back into the salon.

Amber takes me to go wash my hair

and brings me back to sit in this seat,

and I have, like, this strand of hair in my face

and I move it, and it breaks in half.

- [gasps] - Instantly, when I touch it.

So... - What?

- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

So when you touched this bang part of your hair...

- It--it broke off completely.

- Oh no.

- My hair is important to me because

it's very important that I look presentable.

I'm representing someone, so I have to look good for them.

- Okay, so after that one piece came off,

did you know that the rest of it

was all the way off too?

- No, because they had me leave the salon with wet hair,

so that I couldn't see the damage

that was done to my hair.

And they made me pay $375.

- What? - [gasps]

- They said that I had to pay

for the services that were done to my hair.

- But the services-- - Weren't done.

- How'd they even come up, "Oh, and also you have to pay.

You gotta go home, let your hair fall out."

- Crazy. - "But then pay first."

- So what happened next?

- Every time I brushed my hands through my hair...

- It came out. - It would break,

and I had to wait until it dried completely,

and it just shriveled up.

- Can I see your hair? - Yeah.

- Chanel, how you walking around with your hair now?

Like, how are you wearing your hair?

- Oh, my God.

- I have to wear it in head wraps

or put beanies on, but...

- So you had scarf life right now.

- Yeah.

- It is really burnt off all up top.

So what happened to Chanel's hair is called a chemical cut.

- What's that?

- When you over process the hair

with any type of chemical--

that's a relaxer, that's a dye, that's bleaching--

the hair starts to break

because it's been over processed.

- Child, poor Chanel.

Never thought I'd say that, but poor Chanel, honey.

[laughter]

How has this experience affected you?

- It's been--

It was traumatizing when it happened,

and it makes me really sad and upset

that I went to someone who told me they could do my hair

when they clearly didn't know what they were doing.

I need my hair fixed because I'm going in a week to Bali

for my photo shoot,

and my hair the way it is right now is not ready for that,

and it's gonna take years to get back to how it was before.

- Have you heard from any of them?

- I went in the next day to the salon

to show them how-- what happened to my hair,

and Amber, who did my hair, didn't say one word to me.

- So she ain't say nothing to you?

- Did you dirty. - Nothing.

- 'Cause she knew she was wrong.

Chanel walked in there

- Look, they need to throw their whole salon away.

To catch this beautician Amber,

she has been invited to the salon for what she thinks

is an interview to work with Johnny.

What she doesn't know is

Chanel and I are stationed in our surveillance room,

watching everything with our hidden cameras.

I'm set up with the microphone,

and I'll be feeding Johnny questions from the back,

but if things don't add up,

that's when we'll make our move and bust Amber.

- Chanel's preparing for a photo shoot in Bali

and asked her beautician, Amber,

for a honey blonde highlights with extensions,

but she walked out practically bald head

with her long hair broke in half

from having chemicals left on too long,

and get this: she still paid!

- Hi. - Hi.

- Nice to meet you. - How are you?

- So I'm happy that you took the time out

to come speak to me today.

- So how long you been doing hair?

- About a year and a half.

- What you specialize in? What do you love the most?

- Extensions and color. - Extensions?

- It looks really good. - Thank you.

- The color is perfect. Did you color it yourself?

- Yeah, I did.

- So what made you want to go into color?

- I just really love color,

and I wanted to really get into it without touching my own head

so, you know... - [laughs]

- So you practiced on me and fried my hair off.

- [scoffs]

- What happens if you have any mistakes?

What--what do you do with that?

- Um, I mean,

honestly, just stay calm.

- Mm-hmm.

- Fix the problem. - Yeah.

- You know, just make the client happy.

- Has she had many?

- Have you had many mistakes? - No, I don't think so.

- Not so far, no. - You don't think so?

- I feel like a lot in school,

but that's where you make mistakes obviously.

- Of course. - What?

- No mistakes? [laughs]

- I've also pulled up some pictures of your work.

- Okay.

- What do we have here?

- Okay, so that's a tape in extension installation.

- It's really pretty. - Thank you.

I did her color too, but it was kind of grown out here.

because I didn't want to damage your hair even more.

I had no hair for you to even dye.

- Was her hair damaged when she sat down?

- Yeah.

- I had no idea, 'cause I was growing out my hair.

You know, I hadn't dyed it in a long time.

Why would you say, "I can do your hair

and get you how I want you to look"?

- All we did was strip the color,

if you remember that.

- I wasn't aware that your hair was previously colored.

- Me either. That's why I just asked.

- It was growing out, so I had virgin hair grown out,

but it was colored to my original.

- Let me just say this: it's a big point that's missing

as a professional and knowing how this goes,

because it makes sense of why

she was stripping it out in the first place.

- Yeah, 'cause I just s--yeah. - Because if it was just--

if it was just your natural hair,

she would've went straight to bleach it.

So Amber was right to apply the color strip

on Chanel's hair, but the problem is

she didn't know Chanel's hair history

and if it was gonna damage her hair or not,

and she should've been closely monitoring her hair

the whole time.

- Amber, I just wanna let you know why Chanel is here.

- Okay.

- Chanel, she had a really important photo shoot

that she was doing in Bali... - Mm-hmm, okay.

- And she is the face of the swimsuit company.

- So this hairdo meant everything to her,

She is the owner of Salon Kazumi in Beverly Hills.

She's gonna show Amber a better and easier way

to highlight hair

and how to achieve that look that Chanel wanted.

So, Kazumi? - Yes?

- We know that Amber used color remover

when she was doing Chanel's hair.

- Right.

- Where did she go wrong?

- I heard you left client at the salon.

Correct? - Yeah.

- Okay, you shouldn't do that.

When client has a bleach or color remover,

you never know--there could be chemical reaction...

- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

- So you have to pay close attention to the hair,

so that's the number one mistake you made.

- Okay. - Okay, and number two,

what you could've done was--

you could've done the highlights,

which you have more control

and then sometimes better for the hair as well.

Yeah. - Got that?

- Mm-hmm.

- All right, so tell me how you normally do your highlights.

- I usually start in the back.

- Okay, I'll turn it around for you.

And then I just make, like, a little box.

I usually start at the bottom of the box.

- And then this is just where I start the highlight.

- Okay. Good.

You do the weaving technique? - Yeah.

I do, mm-hmm. - Okay.

That's it? - That's--yeah.

- Okay, awesome. So, Kazumi,

is there a better, more efficient way

that she could've done this?

- Yes, so this is exactly beauty school teaches you,

but may I? - Mm-hmm.

- Yeah, so basically the section in your foil...

After this process,

you're gonna have one, two, three, four, five stripes.

- Mm-hmm.

- Usually people don't want the stripy highlights nowadays.

So let's say if I'm highlighting here,

I will make my section a little bit bigger.

Like this. - Okay.

- Okay, and make it really really tight.

I would do a lot of finer highlights like this,

and it's very, very random. - Okay.

- So you can count one, two, three, four, five.

- Mm-hmm. - Yeah?

And then my foil goes in,

and then when you put the foil,

make sure the hair is all nice and saturated.

- I'm really excited

about all the techniques Kazumi taught me,

so I can use them in my future.

- Did it all make sense? - Yes.
