where the coffee grows,

is an island within an island.

A place where many Japanese
came to work and live

in pursuit of a new life.

A young boy of mixed race
was left an orphan,

when a foreign sickness
struck the island.

To protect that boy,

his unwed mother had hid him

from the small community
of coffee pickers,

who believed such children
brought shame and bad luck.

No one knew
that the child existed.

This terrible disease

the plantation owner,

was forever changed upon the
passing of his beloved wife.

On that very sad day,

I became the guardian
of Miss Grace.
