I love this truck but,
for me,

I need to make it mine.

So, now
that you're retired,

you're looking to kind of start
enjoying life a little bit?

I want to do, is build me
a nice, big, badass truck.

Here's the deal --
the truck already has
some features, right?

It's probably got 15,
20 grand of upgrades.

You're talking different
suspension -- a little bigger?

Yeah, a little taller --
10-12 maybe?

Tire size?

24, 18s probably.
Okay.

I want to change the color.
What color are you thinking?

Yeah, it's more like
a dark candy green.

Oh, you want a full repaint?
Full paint, yeah.

What about bumpers
and stuff like that?

The fusion ones that are
the big steel metal ones,

flush to the body, yeah.

This truck, we were asking
like $75,000 for it, as-is.

what's the final breakdown

to make it all happen?

Full repaint's a big deal.
Alright.

Any time you do a candy
or a deep metallic paint job,

you run a lot of risks.

It's a hard paint job to do

because you literally
have to lay down the paint

and the metallic flakes and
everything in the perfect order,

and it has to be sprayed
perfectly,

otherwise you're gonna see
imperfections.

There's just a lot
that can go wrong.

You'd probably be almost
another 75 grand

on top of the price
of the truck.

Hey, man, can you see yourself
driving this truck?

-Now imagine it

when it's six inches taller,
bigger tires,

and looks candy apple green!

This ram isn't gonna be the most
complicated build

we've ever done,
but it's got to be done right,

and randy's got to like it.

To transform our old ram 3500
giveaway build

into randy's dream truck,

we'll start by
beefing up the stance.

We'll remove
the old suspension

to make way for a massive
10-12-inch lift,

then we'll throw on big 40-inch
tires sitting on 24 inch wheels.

The highlight of this build
is gonna be the custom

candy green paint job.
Finally, we'll add new

fusion bumpers in the front
and rear and a few other details

that'll make his truck a true
head-turner wherever it goes.

That guy has a very
specific vision

for what he wants
out of this truck,

and if we don't get it right,

he's just flat-out
not gonna accept the truck.

He's gonna send it back,
and we're gonna have to
keep on working on it,

which is gonna cut into profits,

which, honestly,
we need some profit right now.

You smell that, sam?

Yeah, it smells
like sulfur.

It smells like adventure.

The adventure
of scavenging!

I would like to introduce you
to the kraken.

Heavy d: Last week,
sam came to me with an idea

to build this nautical-themed,
monster, strange,

diesel-powered monowheel.

If this works, we can use it

to create all sorts of buzz
on social media.

You're getting into the details
before you even sold me

on what the hell
this is for.

This right here is for
social media exposure.

Monowheels aren't that uncommon.

The difference is -- sam wants
to set this monowheel apart

by adding out rigger arms,

which basically look like
giant sea-creature tentacles,

but they're also gonna serve
as basically stability bars

so that this monowheel
can lean and turn

and actually be drivable.

Tenacle, man!
Tentacle.

He sourced a two-cylinder,
500 cc diesel engine.

This would be
a prefect contender.

We tracked down some
suction cups and figured out

where to place them
with the help of my brother.

Now we're in the thoracic.
You got five vertebra

in the ribcage area here.

We're gonna be able
to fit probably four of these,

so every three inches,
go ahead and mark them.

We were able to start building
a giant monowheel,

but when our tube ruler
wasn't precise enough

to make the wheels we needed,

sam was forced to outsource.

That's like 20%

of the overall budget
that sam has.

So, not gonna lie,
now that we've had

to spend that money,
I'm a little more skeptical.

We have a mission --

a mission to build
a kraken!

Same is known for using scrap
parts

in unique ways in his designs.

What did you build
the majority of this from?

Everything including
the kitchen sink.

All of it.

These rims are actually
off of a toyota camry.

Intercooler came off
of a suzuki swift.

Suzuki swift.
But this is actually

the p-trap out of the bottom
of a sink.

-Come on!
-Is it really?

Yeah.
No!

Well, he's gonna try and find
some components

for his key feature
of his build --

hydraulic steering --

in heavy d's treasure pile,

and maybe a few extras.

This treasure chest back
here is exactly where

we're gonna find them.
Oh, yeah.

Orbital valve,
power steering pump,

trailer hubs,
turbos, intercoolers.

I'mma be honest, sam,

I've never scouted
for an orbital valve before,

and I don't know if I'd know one
if it punched me in the face.

Heavy d:
An orbital valve is part of
a hydraulic steering system.

However, it's not something that
comes on production vehicles.

So, the odds of us
having taken one off

and putting it out back
somewhere

and having it just kicking
around -- well, not likely.

Is that an orbital valve?

Uh...
That looks like a muffler.

Yeah, it does look like
a muffler

which it's small,
which I do like.

That might actually be usable
in the final assembly.

[ bell dings ]

on the kraken.

intercoolers

and one I can double
as a radiator.

Here's the orbital valve

Yeah, that's a hydraulic

so we'll be able to run

either a brake pedal
or a hand brake lever

directly into
the hydraulic line.

We've just been commissioned
to transform

one of our old giveaway trucks,
a 2018 ram 3500,

into a beast from former
baseball player randy messenger.

Different suspension --
a little bigger?

A little taller.
It's probably got

15, 20 grand of upgrades.

This ram 3500
is already a big truck,

but randy wants it even bigger!

So aaron and I are installing
a 10-12-inch lift

with bigger leaf springs

so we don't lose ride quality.

[ metal clattering ]
whoa!

Alright, so we're going to
a bigger lift kit, huh?

Yeah, I mean,
just think about it --

bigger is better, right?

Let's get this big thing
out of here.

We just got to tap
these bolts out,

if we can get up in there.

okay, that's out.
Here we go.

-Watch it, muscles.
-Put it down!

Diesel dave: See that?
10-12-inch lift.

Tons of height
difference.

This comparison here isn't gonna
say this is exactly

how it's gonna sit with
the weight of the truck.

-Almost 17 -- 16 3/4?
-Yeah.

And then the pre-arch
in these ones is what?

Oh, my goodness. 21 --
so, 21 1/2...

I'm far away.
...16 3/4.

We're dealing with
like 4 3/4 difference.

With no weight on it?
No weight on it.

This pack here should actually
allow for a lot more movement

as far as it being able
to lay out flat

whenever suspension's
compressed

and still come back
and take its shape.

More cushioning.
More cushioning, I guess.

It's gonna hold more weight,
it's gonna hold it up higher,

but it's more of a progressive
spring pack.

Stiffer ride,

more cushion for the pushing
on the rear end, yeah?

Cushion for the pulling?

We're reusing the shackles
from the old leaf springs

on the new lift.

Just a little bit forward,
just...

And once we get those on,

these new leafs
should fit right in.

No, it's just
kind of stuck.

It's the stupid
brackets hole.

It's not gonna go.

It won't go because
the bracket's like this,

so it's just trying to
take something square

and drop it into a trapezoid.
It just won't physically go

while it's attached
to the leaf spring.

Both of them are mangled.

See, america, what happened
is the bracket got bent

when they were taking off
the old suspension parts --

a.K.A., us.

me and aaron,
we must've bent the bracket

and now the new leaf spring
doesn't want to go on very well.

We just might have to persuade
the bracket back

into it's right position.

This is why working on trucks
that've already been worked on

or modified before
is such a huge risk.

Come on man, we're almost done!

The bolt hole's up here and
the tab is bent right here out,

open up
the bottom of these,

the leaf will just
freely slide in there.

This is a port-a-power.

It's portable power.

I know it seems
counter-intuitive

that we're pushing it out
in a way that it's bent

but we need the base open.

and we need shorter u-bolts?

Yeah, 'cause we're on less
lift blocks, more leaf spring.

Can't catch a break man.

Okay, maybe I spoke too soon.

Heavy d: Sam's been working
really hard on the kraken build.

He's got the two-cylinder
diesel engine installed.

He's also got the suction cup
seating arrangement

all dialed in.

What if we added some cool
rib-like structures

coming out on the side to
make it look like the ribcage?

He's taking some
roller skate wheels

and attaching them to the end
of the outrigger arms

so that he's got
somewhere to mount

the wheels
that he's getting outsourced.

The outrigger arms
on the kraken

are what sets
this monowheel apart

from any other
monowheel out there,

so if they don't work, well,
the whole build doesn't work

because then it doesn't steer
and it doesn't go

and it's just a total
waste of time and money.

Do you know
what's happening here?

I have no idea, and anybody
who walks in on this...

Is questioning what we do
in this shop altogether.

Is there seats, or are we
just doing suction cup?

Oh, yep, there's an engine
right in my crotch.

That doesn't seem right.

[ phews ] that's a whole lot
of rotating hotness

a lot closer to the old boys
there than I expected.

Well, forget about crashing.

The real danger's coming
from between your legs.

-Tell us what to do.

Next step is installing
the tie rods

and the hydraulic rams

and then the power steering
pump and orbital valve,

plumb it all together,

and I'll probably go
and throw the fuel tanks on

so we can test fire it
and be able to walk it

back and forth
sitting right here.

-Alright, I like that idea.
-Let's do tie rods.

Alright, so hydraulics
mount to the frame.

Lift her up.
There you go.

Pound it in.

What's happening here?

You just got to take
your skirt off and hit it.

Could use this.

Heavy d: These hydraulic rams
that we're using on the kraken

are the exact same type of rams
that we use

on a power steering system
or on the somersault truck

to make it flip, rear steer.

Basically, hydraulic fluid

builds up in one end of the ram
and extends it,

or it can build up
on the other end

and basically collapse it.

So, the way it's going
to work on the kraken

and where it's way different
from any other vehicle,

is these rams are pushing down
like a 45-degree angle

on these outrigger arms.

The outrigger arms
have a pivot point,

so it's gonna basically push
out and down at the same time

which is going to lean
the monowheel one way

or the other
and in theory, steer.

-Tie rods are done.
-Tie rods, the rams are in.

So, the next steps --

we need steering valve
and hydraulic pump.

I'll go ahead
and start hooking up the pump

if you guys want to hook up
this in here.

Just pull those out.
These valves face down

so that all the hoses
will fit in here.

An orbital valve
is basically a valve

that spins when it's connected
to a steering wheel.

Pry this part
with your muscles.

Keep going, there you go,
there you go.

Nice job.

I thought those were
just for looks.

Heavy d: Orbital valves
weren't necessarily designed

for kraken outrigger arms.

The concept is the same, so it
should work the same in theory.

Bring this one up and it will
attach to this one right here.

There we go.
So yeah, as you can see,

once we have
this tightened down

and running off
the belt system...

...It will supply
hydraulic pressure

through this hose
up into here.

Yeah.
This one's labeled "tank,"

so we'll put this one from here
to here to the reservoir.

Yeah.

...And then the other two lines
will run out under the frame

and out to these rams.

So, as we give input, steering
left and right like that,

it will send
hydraulic pressure

to the left or right hose,

cause the rams
to go in and out.

I'm gonna try to bump it
around a couple times

to get the pump to
prime the fluid.

It may just jump and start.

I'm not 100% sure.

This is when I get nervous,
when he says things like that.

It's alive.

The kraken's maiden
voyage is almost as bumpy

as the muscle's coat
of candy green paint

on randy's 3500.

randy messenger's ram 3500,

aaron and I were putting
on the brand new lift,

and we ran into a little problem

called short u-bolt.
Not gonna work?

This machine right here,
it bends the u-bolts.

Turn the machine on...

Diesel dave: So we went to
siegel truck and repair,

had them fab up some u-bolts,

which made it fit like a glove.

Survey says...

Like a glove!

Aaron: Perfecto.

Now, it's time to put the icing
on the cake

with candy green paint.

Yeah, I believe I want
to change the color.

What color
are you thinking?

Yeah, it's more like
a dark candy green.

This paint is not easy to apply,
and it's expensive,

so I'm not taking
any chances.

Muscle and I are headed over
to check in with damon

to what kind of options
we have for randy.

This is everything
we need to kind of complete

the candy paint job.
In this situation,

I'm gonna show two separate
kinds of candy --

one dark, one light.

Wait, what's the difference
between candy paint

and normal paint?
So, this is normal black.

It's just one step, where candy
is actually a literal dye

that you put into a clingier
base, so that's why it's so --

it's literally water.
It relies on the metallic

to show through
when it hits the sun,

and that's how you get
the cool color edges --

-metallic first, candy second.
-Exactly.

Diesel dave:
Now, with all the layers we need
to apply for this paint,

it's very important
that we do it evenly

because the thicker the paint,
the darker the color.

If we don't apply it evenly,

it's gonna be streaky
or splotchy,

but if we do it right,
it's gonna sparkle and shine.

Muscles: [ muffled ] we should
do a music video like this.

-[ beatboxing ]

damon:
I always like to start with
a sealer 'cause it gives you

a brand-new base
to start off of.

-Smooth.
-Smooth.

-Smooth is [indistinct].
-Very consistent.

So, step two is gonna be
our silver base.

Now that you put your silver
on there, tap it off,

and then we'll come through
and we'll paint it black.

Black paint!

Good work!

And then I'll put a top coat
over the black

that makes
the black sparkly,

then it'll make the black shiny,
and then when you put it out

in the sun,
you'll see the difference

in between the silver
and the black.

No, bad, bad, bad, bad!

It is designed

to go left and right,
not up and down.

What is wrong with you?!
So, now it'll be funny --

did you pay attention

the last step.

cover it up

So, you've got
a job to do.

So, you have a truck to tear
apart and some paint to order.

-Yep, you could roll this thing,

and you can't even see
a millimeter of deviation in it.

Alright, so...
Alright, this wheel's

locked in.

Heavy d: Sam's got the new
wheels for the kraken all built,

and once we get them assembled
and installed,

then it'll be time
to take it for a test drive

and figure out whether or not
this outrigger, tentacle,

hydraulic steering system
actually works.

We have more to do just
for this last side over here

and we're ready to roll.

There's a spray adhesive --

super 77 spray adhesive --
underneath,

holding the rubber tire
to the actual steel ring.

These are actually
bicycle tires

that I've cut down
and stripped over the outside.

And, you know, bicycle tires
have those beads of steel

going all the way through them
so they can't stretch

and pop off the rim.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

And that actual steel lip

keeps these from ever
being able to rip off.

They're actually
quite strong.

That is very tight.
So what'd you use?

Like, two tires?

Two tires for this one
and three for the main ring.

That's a great idea.

So, there's obviously
no air in these.

These are solid steel.
Solid steel

but these are
actually a special type of

kind of an all-terrain tire
that has extra-thick padding.

So not only is it
the just the rubber surface.

But if you look
at the cross section,

there's actually quite
a bit of soft rubber

that'll absorb impact.
Interesting.

So, it gives traction

and a little bit
of cushion to the ride.

It's not nearly as rough

as rolling on
just the bare steel wheels.

Yeah, that makes sense.

So bedliner
on here obviously?

Yep, the bedliner,
that just gives it

a nice, tough finish
that's very durable.

You're a damn wizard, sam.
[ chuckles ] I appreciate it.

the muscle and I find out

if we get the sign-off

Well, I mean, I wouldn't
have it any other way.

First test drive of the kraken,

I'm just gonna be honest,
it sucked.

It was impossible to steer.
It was bumpy.

If sam can't work through
all of these problems

and get this thing
driving way better than this,

I might revoke
his wizard status.

Yeah, I saw the front wheels
skipping off the ground.

Just pushing.
And it's just plowing through.

I think we're definitely gonna
have to add some counterbalance

to the front
to help weigh it down.

And that'll help the wheels
dig in and turn tighter.

'cause I noticed
when you were driving it,

every time you gassed it,

the outermost tire
would skip off the ground.

And if it's not getting
traction, then it's not turning.

You want to stack some weights
in here or something?

Well, the advantage --
this tube is hollow.

What we could do is if we have
some of those ballast beads

left over
from the wake boat,

I might be able to drill a hole
and stick a funnel in here

and then fill them up
with ballast beads

to weigh
the wheel rings down.

So that way,
aesthetically it looks the same,

but we should be able to add
at least 50 pounds per side

to help bring the nose way down.
It needs at least that

because it's just not...

It's just pushing.
Yeah.

But it ran! It rolled.
It did run.

That's a good sign.
That is a great sign.

Heavy d: I mean,
there's no handbook.

There's no manual
for how to build a kraken.

Sam was just winging it,
and obviously there's gonna be

some stuff
we have to work through.

something like a small,

plunge them in there with.

These a lead weights
are ideal

because the density
of these little pellets

is pretty high.

And the only downside is,
I guess because they're used

as ballast bags,
they put oil on them,

and it makes them
all stick together,

so they don't flow
like they could

if they were
actually just...

This is gonna take us
a day and a half, sam.

You're just stirring it.

It's not even
going anywhere.

Well, the only problem is if
we go any larger with the hole,

then that's just a big
weak point in the wheel.

but we turned it into
an absolute beast for randy.

We boosted the suspension
with a 12-inch lift,

then added some 40-inch tires
on 24-inch wheels.

We added fusion bumpers
to the front and rear

and topped it all off with one
of the sickest paint jobs

we've ever done
in a metallic candy green.

I love how this truck
turned out.

mostly because I don't

the throttle,

or whether the suction cups
are actually gonna start

pulling the skin off my back.

Alright, america, let me walk
you through the kraken.

The heart of the kraken
is a two-cylinder

500 cc perkins diesel engine

with a 21-millimeter turbo.

From there, the engine
drives into a cvt transmission,

which basically is
a belt-drive transmission,

similar to what you'd find on
a lawnmower or a razor or utv.

As you give it gas,
this clutch engages that belt,

which then engages
these roller wheels,

which then drives this big hoop,

which brings me to my big hoop.

This right here is a steel tube
that was bent

into a perfect circle,
right,

covered in bedliner.

And then had a tire tread,

basically glued
and screwed to the top of it.

So, that's our main drive wheel.

Then we have our steering
wheels -- front and rear.

Same thing.

Perfectly symmetrical hoops,
just smaller size.

We fabbed up some outrigger arms
to look like tentacles

and they steer
at a 45-degree angle.

We also took some suction cups

and added them to the spine
with a seating area.

And we gave it a deep sea-green
outer coat job.

Arguably, my favorite part
of this whole build

is the ship's helm
steering wheel.

This right here, goes along
with the nautical theme of

the kraken.

Now the kraken is on land,

and it's here
for the whole world to see

just how creative we really are.

And we built it for less than...

10k.

This is worth $10,000

just being able to shoot
this video alone.
