Excuse me.

- Excuse me, excuse me. - Stop.

Thank you.

- Do you need help? - No, thank you.

- Bring the box in for me. - Okay.

Why are you nosing around here?

Someone moved into the house across from us.

So?

Strange, he doesn't have much baggage-

Only one leather suitcase.

That woman seemed to be very ill and needed to be carried into the house.

Mind your own business.

Needle, red thread, red strings...

rouge, pollen, prickly heat powder.

Hair pomade, cologne.

What are you doing?

So noisy.

Always barking!

It's on the streets every night.

So annoying. Damn.

Damn dog, I'll kill you someday.

Ah, Chai, where have you been?

Why are you back so late?

So noisy.

Get in quick.

How's this?

Come.

What a misfortune!

The woman is so sick.

The man is still going all out.

I tell you.

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it.

You know, the new tenant that moved in opposite-

The lady is already seriously sick.

But that man just wants to do it every night.

He squealed like a pig.

Just like pulling bellows.

He is too much.

- He should be more considerate to his wife. - Yes.

Even if he wants to, he shouldn't shout at the top of his voice.

Yes.

Mdm. Ma, the new tenants are very strange.

They moved in here almost a week ago and no one has been seen.

- Yes. - His wife is sick.

Of course he won't come out.

Even to get medicine he'd still need to go out.

But I've not seen him at all.

Indeed, that's true.

They have been here for a while but never been seen after that.

Mdm. Ma?

Yes?

Have you realized that there's a fetid odor on the street?

Fetid odor?

No, I haven't noticed.

No? My side of the street stinks!

Really?

If you don't believe me, come and check it out.

Okay. Let's go.

Where?

Over here.

Here?

There really is a foul stench.

What is it?

It's really smelly.

I got it.

The smell is from that side so Mdm. Ma doesn't notice.

But Mdm. Song got it instead.

Must be from the house of the new tenant.

Probably.

Hurry. Come.

Let's check it out. The smell is from inside.

Why is it so smelly?

Why does it stink?

The door's locked. Don't even know if there's anyone inside.

Something's wrong. There ought to be someone living in there.

Why don't we just knock?

Open the door!

Anyone in?

- Maybe there's a dead dog inside. - Can't be.

Stop guessing. We better call the police.

Pry open the door.

Anyone in?

Over here.

Anybody inside?

This house is so dirty.

No one living in such a big house!

Cobwebs all over.

There could be a ghost inside for all we know!

Don't talk nonsense. How can there be ghost?

I want to know. Why is it so smelly?

Halt.

Turn left, turn right.

Forward march.

Halt.

Turn left, turn right.

Change of shift.

Salute.

About turn.

Salute.

Turn left.

Gun up.

Forward march.

1, 2, 1, 2-

Sir, the landlord from Wen Min Road is here.

- Bring him in. - Yes, sir.

Come in.

- Sir. - Sit down.

You are the landlord?

Yes.

You rented the house out.

Did you ask for his name?

He said his surname's Li but did not mention his name.

What does he look like?

He was wearing a blue satin shirt with a white scarf.

Oh, he had a hat on and dark sunglasses.

His faced was covered, so I couldn't tell what he looks like.

Okay, you may go.

But without our permission, you're not allowed to leave Guangzhou.

Sir, I've nothing to do with it.

I only rented the house to him.

How would I know that he's got a corpse in there?

- I've nothing to do with it, sir. - Go back.

- Sir, I've nothing to do with it. - We know.

Our chief asks you to go back home, so you go back first.

Go.

If there's anything else, we'll ask you here again.

- Where's the chief? - Inside.

Sir, the autopsy report is here.

She was strangled to death.

At the same time we found out that...

she had traces from sexual intercourse after she died.

What? Sexually abused body again?

Chief, according to the coroner's report...

it seems that there was a similar case before.

- Also a sexually abused corpse. - Leave us.

Yes.

I suspect that the same person is involved in this case as well...

as from the Foshan case a year ago.

Have a car readied for me immediately. I'm going to Foshan.

Yes, sir.

"Guangzhou police headquarters"

"Foshan police station"

Good morning, sir.

Sir.

The Chief of Guangzhou police headquarters, Mr. zhang, is here.

Welcome, Mr. zhang.

Please.

Salute.

"The Li residence case"

Mr. zhang.

Li's home did have a sexually abused body case a year ago...

but the case is still unsolved till now.

According to our investigation...

at that time the mistress of zui Hong House.

"zui Hong House"

"Chunhua, Hongmei"

"Xiaocui, Qiaomei"

Madam Lan, Boss San is here.

I'm on my way.

- Please have a seat. - Okay.

Boss San, Master Liu, it has been so long.

Madam Lan, I presume all your popular girls have been reserved.

Wonder why nobody came to serve us!

Boss San, don't make fun of me.

Xiaocui has been waiting for you.

- Really? - Yes.

Ask her here quick.

Xiaocui, come and serve the guest. Boss San is here.

Coming.

You two are so beautiful.

Have a seat.

I want you both.

I want to go over.

Leaving so fast?

Boss San.

- I'm leaving. - See you later.

Mr. zhang.

Chunmei, come here.

Coming.

Coming.

My little treasure. I miss you so much.

Take good care of the guest.

Uncle Jing.

It has been a while.

I'm sure you've forgotten us. We miss you very much.

No, I have official trips lately.

Just came back this morning.

Where's Hongmei?

- Ask her out to meet us. - Hongmei.

Yan Er, go get Hongmei.

Mom, Hongmei is not feeling well. She's sleeping in her room.

She's sick again.

Uncle Jing, I'm so sorry.

Hongmei went back to her home village and will be there for a few days.

What a coincidence!

Why don't I introduce a new girl to you?

An original countryside yield.

Original yield?

Trust me. You're sure to take a liking.

Very well then.

Yan Er, bring Uncle Jing in.

Ask Xiao Feng to take good care of him. Okay?

As for these two gentlemen, find two beautiful girls to serve them.

Yes. Please come with me.

- Please take good care of them. - Yes.

Madam Lan, I'm leaving.

Please come again.

Hongmei, it's not that I like to nag or somethin'.

But I mean, look at you, you're young, but you're so weak and frail...

and always tend to fall sick.

How're you going to do business?

Ma, even I don't want it to be like this...

but what can I do if I am ill-fated?

That's why I ended up this way.

I'm glad you're aware of it. Think about it.

You take more medicine than food here.

Lying in bed more than serving the clients.

I've got a huge expenditure to meet.

My young lady.

Mom.

Li zhengyuan is waiting for you downstairs.

On my way.

Look after her.

Master Li, have you been waiting long?

I'm so sorry.

I know that you're here to see Hongmei, right?

But unfortunately, Hongmei is unwell these days.

Say, why don't I look for another girl to keep you company?

If you don't like, it'll do even if you just chat with her.

What do you think?

Madam Lan, the reason I'm here tonight is not to look for girls.

A good sense of humor indeed!

If you're not here for the girls, are you looking for me then?

Tonight I'm here to discuss with you about Hongmei.

What is it about?

I want to buy her freedom.

You really want to buy her freedom?

Master Li...

I know that you're fond of Hongmei.

Although, Hongmei's health is poor, at least she's our popular girl.

Furthermore, she's still young.

There's plenty of time for her to earn for me.

No matter what...

she'd still need a husband in future.

Madam Lan, just tell me how much you want.

Okay, fine.

Since you like her so much...

I just want $500 from you.

- That's not too much right? - Very well, that's settled then.

I'll send the money tomorrow.

Finally, I can get rid of that burden.

Master Li, why are you still wearing sunglasses so late at night?

What a strange person!

Mr. Li, Ms. Li is seriously ill.

I think you better send her to the hospital.

Doctor, thank you.

I don't want to go to the hospital.

Ms. Li, don't give up.

Once you're admitted to the hospital, you'll recover slowly.

And you'll not have to worry anymore.

Doctor?

My husband and I didn't think of our future.

One must die in a matter of time.

Why think so much?

From then Hongmei's illness became worse.

In order to take care of her, Li zhengyuan seldom went out.

Liquor delivery.

Anybody home? Please come out to collect your goods!

Anybody home? Delivery! Liquor delivery!

Please come out.

Please come out to collect your goods. Anybody home?

Could you please quiet down? Please don't shout so loud.

There are people who are not awake yet. Stop shouting.

Don't go anywhere. Someone will come to collect the goods.

Take a seat. Go on.

Coming, coming Why so noisy? I'm here now.

Mistress, please pay up!

Why are you shouting?

Crazy!

Shouting early in the morning.

Ma, this is the person. It is him who shouted just now.

Are you crazy?

Why are you shouting early in the morning?

Thank God, you're finally here, ma'am. Please settle this bill.

Fine!

Madam.

It's easy for you to make money.

Your ladies just get laid. You get paid.

You brat. Stop your nonsense now, or I'll not pay!

It doesn't matter if you don't pay.

But without any liquor to serve your guests, you'll be in trouble.

Devil!

I'll ask Yan Er to pay you later. What're you shouting for?

How come Hongmei hasn't been seen for a while?

Someone has bought her off. She is in Li family now.

You're great! You can get rid of a long-term patient.

Now, will you leave?

- Who is the idiot that bought her? - Why do you keep babbling?

- If you keep asking, I'll kick you out. - I'll leave.

- Go away! - I'm leaving.

Lady boss.

You haven't gone? Now beat it.

Will you leave or not?

He really pisses me off!

Oh, no!

Punctured.

Abused corpse.

After this matter was exposed, Li zhengyuan was arrested immediately.

What does the autopsy report say?

According to the autopsy, Hongmei died of tuberculosis.

But after our detailed investigation...

we found that Hongmei's corpse has traces from sexual intercourse.

Sir, it seems that these two cases might be committed by Li zhengyuan.

Indeed, I've asked Li zhengyuan...

why have intercourse with a corpse?

What did he reply?

He said it was his wife's request before she died.

What he did was just keeping his promise to his late wife.

So the official can only charge Li zhengyuan...

for late report of death and violating public hygiene.

Considering his adulterous behavior with the corpse...

the judge sentenced him to Foshan asylum for two years.

- Please bring Li zhengyuan out. - Yes.

Exchange control, please connect me to Foshan asylum.

I'm looking for Mr. Lin.

It's so late now, Mr. zhang. I'm not sure if I can find him.

I'll do my best.

Are you Mr. Lin? I'm Chief Liu.

Is Li zhengyuan still here?

Oh, thank you.

Mr. zhang.

Li zhengyuan was discharged a month back.

Then I suspect that he's involved in the abused body case in Guangzhou.

Now our first step is to look for Li zhengyuan.

Yes.

Police patrol. Don't move.

Turn around.

Who are you?

I'm the owner of this house, Li zhengyuan.

- Li zhengyuan? - Yes.

- Weren't you in the asylum? - I was discharged a month ago.

Why is your face covered?

Remove your glasses.

What's with you?

Take off your glasses.

Do you hear?

Come along to the police station.

Sir, upstairs.

Inside, sir.

Why is this murderer so cruel?

Sir.

Sir.

Li zhengyuan.

This murderer is very sinister.

He'd even dare to kill the policeman!

Mr. zhang, it seems that...

Li zhengyuan is out on a killing spree again.

You two, carry him out.

Yes.

Take a look if there's any more clues.

Take a look over there.

- You two, come here. Bring these back. - Yes.

Sir, what is it?

Congratulations, cousin zhengyuan.

A Very Happy Marriage.

Mr. zhang, there's someone on the bed.

I didn't make the wrong judgment.

He indeed did come back.

Unbelievable, what's the reason?

Quiet!

What is it?

- Chief. - It's you!

Take a look. This lady said a corpse has been fraudulently taken.

She is Madam Lan, the boss of zui Hong House.

This is Guangzhou police investigation department head, Mr. zhang.

Mr. zhang.

Sir.

This is what happened.

Qiaomei, one of our zui Hong House ladies died in the hospital a few days ago.

Today I sent someone to claim the body...

but was told that the body has been claimed.

How can this happen? This is not our signature.

They must have been mistaken.

Chief, look. Someone signed it, so I have to release it.

It's not our signature. Don't listen to him.

I wouldn't know who is her relative, right? This has nothing to do with me.

Look. You're irresponsible. Don't blame it on us.

Enough. Come with me.

Madam Lan, is this Qiaomei?

Yes, she is. How come she's brought here?

- Can't imagine. Cover it up. - Yes.

This corpse has been hidden in the Li residence.

What kind of an insane fellow would hide a corpse at home?

That murderer hid the corpse in an empty house and raped it.

Who'd be so villainous so as to rape a dead woman?

Sheer lack of humanity!

Thank you. Poor Qiaomei.

Dead and yet still ruined by someone.

Madam Lan, I want to ask you something.

Qiaomei, you poor thing.

Don't be too sad.

Madam Lan, please tell me honestly.

You may ask.

From amongst all your girls, is there anyone who isn't here now?

They're all here...

except Xiaocui who went to Guangzhou.

Yes.

What's she doing in Guangzhou?

Many of our ladies are free.

They go back to Guangzhou every year.

How long has she been gone?

Seven days.

Junde, show her the photo of the corpse from Guangzhou's case.

Yes, sir.

Hey, she's our Xiaocui, right?

How did she die so horribly?

She was strangled to death.

The corpse was hidden in an empty house in Guangzhou.

We have examined the corpse.

She was raped after her death.

This person is a beast!

Oh, heavens!

He killed her and then raped her body.

He is not a human being.

He be cursed to have no descendants.

How can he do such a cruel thing?

Wouldn't suffice even if 10 hunks were to chop him up!

He should die a horrible death!

I won't be relieved until he's shot to death.

Mr. Liu, get someone to take down their statement.

Yes.

- zhang Debiao? - Yes.

You bring them out and take their statement.

Yes.

Please come with me.

Mr. zhang, according to you is there any lead to this case?

Madam Lan, you should know Li zhengyuan?

Since Hongmei's scandal, who wouldn't know him?

Now Mr. zhang suspects that the case in Guangzhou...

and yesterday's case discovered in Li's residence...

are done by him.

Such a bastard!

Should have faced the firing squad long ago.

Mr. Liu has confirmed that Li zhengyuan...

was discharged from the asylum a month ago.

In this period of time, did he go to zui Hong House?

About three or four weeks ago. He came once.

Because of Hongmei's case and his strange behavior...

none of the ladies were willing to entertain him.

How did he react then?

He left quietly by himself later.

- Did he come again? - No, he did not.

- Think carefully. - No, he did not come again.

I remember very clearly.

Please sign here.

Madam Lan, you may go now.

Let's go.

Thank you very much.

If you happen to arrest him, please inform me.

Sure, this way.

Sir, the statement, have a look.

It seems that we must take action on Li zhengyuan now.

Okay, I'll get some men to assist.

"Foshan Blind Man Biscuit"

"Ren Wo Herbal Medicine"

Sir. Hey, come over here.

He is Li zhengwen.

Hello, officer! What can I do for you?

Please sit.

- You may get to your work. - Yes.

Please have a cup of tea.

According to the police data, you are Li zhengyuan's cousin.

Your name is Li zhengwen right?

Yes.

Li zhengyuan left the asylum a month ago.

Do you know of his condition?

After he was discharged, I only met him once.

He seems to be out of his mind.

He sold all valuables in the house.

Did you know how much he sold them for?

I think about $20,000.

I remember that during the time when he was selling...

we even had a slight row because of this matter.

Those valuable antiques were passed down from many generations.

It's a pity for him to sell them away.

Any idea why'd he need so much money for?

He mentioned about wanting to buy the zui Hong House...

no matter how much it cost.

He wanted to buy off the freedom of the prostitutes...

so that they could leap out of the fire pit.

Thank you.

"zui Hong House"

Li zhengyuan has caused me much misery...

created so much trouble for me.

And now all the ladies are gone.

There's no business.

And I'm all worked up.

Ma'am, don't think of it too much. And don't be disheartened.

I'm so vexed, watching those ladies either dead or gone.

The zui Hong House is now so scattered.

Do you think I'd have the heart to continue?

Ma, look on the bright side.

There's a bottle of safflower oil downstairs.

I'll go get it for you, okay?

Hey, I saw Li zhengyuan.

Li zhengyuan is here?

- Where is he? - Downstairs.

Come down with me to have a look.

He's here.

- There's no one here. - I really saw him a moment ago...

standing behind that door.

You must be seeing things. Come. Help me apply the ointment.

"De Fang Food shop"

Excuse me.

Make way.

Excuse me.

- Who are you looking for? - Looking for your boss.

- Do you have an appointment? - No.

Then get out.

Don't move.

Look carefully.

"Guangzhou Police"

Please come in.

Have a seat.

Get back to your work.

Sit.

- Beard nine. - Sir.

Madam Lan is your mistress.

You were in cahoots with her to cheat Li zhengyuan of $20,000.

Is there such a matter?

I came to know about the Li zhengyuan case only from the newspaper.

As for Madam Lan, I don't know who she is.

C'mon now, stop playing games.

Everyone knows that you're the man behind Madam Lan and zui Hong House.

If it was not for you, she wouldn't be able to run zui Hong House until now.

You're referring to the lady boss of zui Hong House.

That was a long time ago.

We businessmen do frequent brothels.

Who's who, no one can remember clearly.

Let me tell you...

we suspect Li zhengyuan is having his vengeance...

on Madam Lan for cheating him of $20,000.

So he is killing the ladies of zui Hong House, one by one.

I'm sure you're aware of it.

I can swear by heaven and earth that I really don't know about it.

I'll die a horrible death should it be otherwise.

Fine.

If we find out that you're related to this case...

you'll be sent to the firing squad.

Goddamn troublesome-

Beard nine.

I already have nothing to do with you!

Why did you ask me here so late at night? What the hell do you want?

Whatever it is, please be quick.

Madam Lan, you sure have your ways.

No wonder you're able to repay me $2,000 earlier.

So you cheated Li zhengyuan of $20,000.

You're talking nonsense that I have cheated him of $20,000.

You're out of your mind.

Madam Lan, I didn't know that Li zhengyuan has $20,000.

In fact it's Mr. zhang the investigator who told me.

If you cheated Li zhengyuan for $20,000...

and use $2,000 to shut my mouth-

It's not going to be that easy.

What's wrong with you? What the hell are you saying?

When did I cheat twenty grand off Li zhengyuan?

You know very well if you've done it or not.

Let me tell you.

If I tell Mr. zhang that you suddenly returned me $2,000...

you could be held in high suspicion.

But I didn't say anything.

When did I tell you not to say?

Don't think you can blackmail me.

Let me tell you.

Li zhengyuan killed so many of my ladies...

I want him to be imprisoned now.

If you know his whereabouts, tell me immediately!

I'll reward you with another $2,000!

Hey, do you want me to give you a lift?

No need.

This liquor is really good.

You bastard, are you blind?

Spilled all my liquor!

Now I've none to drink, not even a single drop.

Someone is sleeping here.

Hey, man, why are you lying here?

Why don't you go home?

Sir, I'm sure that person is wearing a hat and a white scarf.

Sir.

He was holding a knife and had blood all over his body.

Sir, I'm sure I've seen it.

I've seen it very clearly.

Sir.

What is it?

Sir.

Li zhengyuan is out again to kill.

- Who's dead this time? - It's Beard nine.

Sir, we met him this morning.

Could there be some secret that Li zhengyuan feared he'll leak out...

and so killed him to shut his mouth?

Chief, what evidence do you have...

to prove that Li zhengyuan is the murderer?

That drunkard said the murderer wore a hat...

sunglasses and a white scarf.

Wore a blue long gown, holding a knife in his hand...

and was covered with blood.

According to our information...

Li zhengyuan fits the description.

Chief, looking for me?

It's so late.

Sir, Madam Lan is here.

Bring her in.

Please.

Do you think I don't have to sleep?

Chief, why have you called me here so late?

Please have a seat.

Sit.

Madam Lan, Li zhengyuan killed again.

- Who did he kill? - Beard nine.

Why does he keep killing at random?

I find it strange too.

All those he kills are somehow related to you.

I don't know why he's pushing me to the corner.

If this continues, I'll have to close zui Hong House...

and start all over again-

return to the countryside to farm.

If this continues I may suffer a nervous breakdown...

or even go mad.

Chief, do you think I'm right?

This person is a lunatic. Who knows what is he going to do to me?

I'm quitting. I'm going back to my home town.

Madam Lan, zui Hong House must not close down.

Instead it must resume on a bigger scale.

But why?

According to the situation...

I'm sure that all of Li zhengyuan's actions are aimed at you.

He's after me?

So long as you're here...

Li zhengyuan will appear again.

He wants to kill me too?

He may.

Only you can lure him out.

That's why you can't leave Foshan.

You must wait till he takes the bait.

Sir, you want to use me as bait?

What if he kills me too?

Madam Lan, Mr. zhang is right.

We hope that you'll help us.

As for your safety, we'll do our best to protect you.

Please don't worry.

Sir.

Ladies of our zui Hong House are either dead or gone.

I'm only left with an adopted daughter.

What would I do if something happened to her?

Don't worry.

I'll send my people disguised as your patrons...

to zui Hong House to protect you...

and to wait for Li zhengyuan to appear.

Chief, is it safe to do it this way?

Don't worry.

I guarantee nothing will happen.

We'll do our best to protect you.

That's it.

Yan Er, you've been with me for so many years.

I don't want you to take the risk with me.

Here. I have some money for you.

Go back to your hometown to avoid him.

I've been with you for so long. I don't want to leave you.

Listen to me.

Is it possible that you'd follow me for a lifetime?

I may live today...

but I don't even know if I can live past tomorrow.

Quick.

Don't move.

Attention!

- Sir, the exercise has been completed. - Good.

What is this? Why play such a trick on everyone?

People will laugh at you.

Hard work, hard work.

What's with you? Mr. zhang.

This act of yours, isn't it a little too much?

Others will laugh at you.

Li zhengyuan will not be so easy to catch.

Remember, once you see Li zhengyuan, pull the string immediately.

Mr. zhang, Mr. Li, please have a seat inside.

Where is Madam Lan?

She is not feeling well today. Allow me to serve you.

Please.

Mr. zhang, please come in.

Have some more drinks.

Mr. Chen, you're here too.

Have more drinks.

Mr. Ma, I'll be with you in a while.

Xiaomei, come out quick. Mr. Chen is here.

Come out quick.

Careful.

Xiaohong, take good care of the guests.

- Anything? - Nothing.

This is on the house.

- It's our treat. - You have one too.

Help, help!

Help! Help me quick!

Everyone calm down.

Help!

Don't move.

Check downstairs.

Are you all right?

Stop.

He got the slip.

Mr. zhang, Madam Lan fell to her death.

Her face is disfigured.

Step back.

Excuse me, excuse me.

There's nothing to see here.

Go.

Wait.

- Okay, carry away. - Yes.

Send some of our men back first.

- Leave a few smart ones to stay with me. - Yes.

Hey, where are you? I brought the money.

Come out quick.

I brought the money.

What is it?

Let's get out of here.

Li zhengyuan, you have nowhere to go.

Arrest him.

- So it's you. - What?

- Isn't he Li zhengyuan? - No.

He's the delivery boy from the liquor shop.

He frequently delivered liquor to zui Hong House.

It's him who reported the 'case of the abused corpse' to us.

Why did you do it?

Madam Lan asked me to do it.

Why did she ask you to do it?

She fancied young and handsome chaps like me.

Then where did you hide Li zhengyuan's corpse?

Did you kill Xiaocui from zui Hong House?

Yes.

I impersonated Li zhengyuan and killed her.

Madam Lan said we can use Li zhengyuan's behavior as an excuse...

to trick the police into thinking that Li zhengyuan is the murderer.

That way we could get off scot-free.

What about Li zhengyuan then?

After Li zhengyuan was discharged...

he wanted to buy off zui Hong House for $20,000...

in order to buy the freedom of all prostitutes.

Had he succeeded to buy over zui Hong House...

then Madam Lan would be out of a job.

Hence Madam Lan asked me to kill him...

and took his money as well.

He's not dead yet.

Come here. Strangle him to death.

Then why kill Beard nine?

He wanted to blackmail Madam Lan.

What about the police in Li's house?

That was his bad luck to bump into me.

Sir, we've dug it out.

Look.

It's him. It's Li zhengyuan.

Then the plan has been successful.

But why kill Madam Lan then?

This bitch!

I've done so many things for her, yet she keeps all the money.

Didn't even give me a single cent.

She also kept threatening me...

that if I leave her she'll reveal the truth.

So we'll go to jail together.

There's no way out for me.

So when she took the money out...

I killed her and took all the money.
