Newfoundland, the crew of the Seadoo

is heading into the unknown.

They're 220 miles from land,

out on the edge of the continental shelf
where the ocean drops off into the abyss.

[Conway] Up in north Atlantic,

it's just mass
of rolling sea coming at you.

So, you better buckle 'er down, pal.

[narrator] First Mate Conway Caines
and his dad, Skipper Rick,

are taking a gamble
in a place they've never been before.

When you're 200 miles from nowhere...

you're 200 miles from nowhere.

I got [bleep] butterflies in my stomach.

There's a lot of unknowns.

[narrator] This far out,
if the weather turns,

the boat could be on the bottom before
a search and rescue team can reach them.

[Conway] If you go overboard out here,

you only got five minutes in the water
and you're dead.

The North Atlantic Ocean
is very unforgiving.

Never mind the fact that you might
set your gear and not catch any fish,

but you might never come back again.

It's all over now but the crying.
Now the battle begins.

This is where people say

is northern Turbot.

One boatload of it is worth $70,000;
and the crew is counting on it.

[Rick] We're gonna start running our
byline and drop our first fleet of gear,

and get this fishing season on the go.

[Dave] There goes the first high flier
for Turbot.

[Conway] My goal for this trip
is to catch my cap.

Thirty-two thousand pounds of gut fish
at $2.10 a pound.

First time in these waters
and we are pumped.

[narrator] Northern Turbot is
a deep-water fish.

They catch it with gill nets

nets stretching nearly seven miles long.

when these nets come back,

is the one and only Rick Crane,

and that would be me.

not by stuff getting handed to me,

by making the right decisions
and putting in a lot of hard work

and I feel the stress like mad.

and the crew of the Sebastian Sails

have picked a notorious strip
of the North Atlantic

to launch their crab season.

We calls it Iceberg Alley, and it's
a very big risk to go fishing there.

You don't see no worse than that.

[Anstey] An iceberg
can destroy a boat within seconds.

Below the surface of the water
is nine times bigger than above the water.

[narrator] It was one of these giants
drifting south from Greenland

that sent the Titanic to the bottom.

[Anstey] I'm an aggressive fisherman.

I puts all my effort into it,
because right to this day,

I still thinks about
how I got to where I'm to now.

[narrator] The only reason Morris
is a skipper now

is because of his brother Corey.

He bought Morris his first boat
just before he died at age 28.

And that's what drives me,
knowing what he did for me.

I was going to make sure, I was going
to prove to him that I could do it.

I'm still doing it,
even though he's not around to see it.

But I'm still keeping up my word.
Keeping my word to him.

and Morris guns it to get out of the way.

did get a piece of them.

Two or three pots we got destroyed now.

the iceberg dragged them along the bottom.

[Darryl] We're back on the road again.

[Anstey] I don't know how you get ahead
if you don't take chances sometimes.

I know there's a few crab around this area

and I got no choice
but to try and get some.

downstairs, smells like bacon.

back to the crab grounds,

while the crew fixes breakfast.

I'm going to boil some eggs,

[narrator] At sea, it's customary for the
crew to bring the captain his meal.

On any other fishing boat, the cook
makes sure the Captain gets it first.

That way there's no delays,
his attention is focused up here.

Rick wants his food delivered,
he's going to have to go to a restaurant.

For the last couple of years, he's barely
been able to keep his head above water.

and try pulling from that end.

[Conway] They've slowed down
compared to the first net.

Seems like they're a bit scarce to me.

You got bait coming up and no fish by it.
