[narrator] Off the north coast of Newfoundland, the crew of the Seadoo

is heading into the unknown.

They're 220 miles from land,

out on the edge of the continental shelf where the ocean drops off into the abyss.

[Conway] Up in north Atlantic,

it's just mass of rolling sea coming at you.

So, you better buckle 'er down, pal.

[narrator] First Mate Conway Caines and his dad, Skipper Rick,

are taking a gamble in a place they've never been before.

When you're 200 miles from nowhere...

you're 200 miles from nowhere.

I got [bleep] butterflies in my stomach.

There's a lot of unknowns.

[narrator] This far out, if the weather turns,

the boat could be on the bottom before a search and rescue team can reach them.

[Conway] If you go overboard out here,

you only got five minutes in the water and you're dead.

The North Atlantic Ocean is very unforgiving.

Never mind the fact that you might set your gear and not catch any fish,

but you might never come back again.

It's all over now but the crying. Now the battle begins.

This is where people say I don't want to do this no more,

I changed my mind, I want to go home.

[laughing]

[narrator] What's drawn them here is northern Turbot.

One boatload of it is worth $70,000; and the crew is counting on it.

[Dave] We need a load of fish.

[narrator] Back on board this season is Conway's old buddy,

Hurricane Dave Hewlin.

[Dave] We got an experienced crew, good gear, good boat.

We just need the fish gods on our side.

[narrator] The two deckhands are new boys;

Brian Plowman and his cousin, Crazy Steve.

These Turbot better be good to me 'cause I need $1,200 for a set of teeth.

[all laughing]

[Conway] I finally got a crew that's got just as much get up and go as me.

[Rick] Get ready!

Let's go fishing, boys.

[Rick] We're gonna start running our byline and drop our first fleet of gear,

and get this fishing season on the go.

[Conway] Let 'er go.

[Dave] There goes the first high flier for Turbot.

-[Rick] You get 'em gone? -Yeah, he's gone, yeah.

[Conway] My goal for this trip is to catch my cap.

Thirty-two thousand pounds of gut fish at $2.10 a pound.

Bring on the [bleep] money, man.

[Dave] There goes our nets, boy.

First time in these waters and we are pumped.

[narrator] Northern Turbot is a deep-water fish.

They catch it with gill nets

that hang like a curtain 3000 feet below the surface.

We're hoping to get a lot of fish.

[narrator] They're laying three fleets of nets stretching nearly seven miles long.

[Dave] Hopefully, when these nets come back,

they'll be full of fish, and we'll go home with a pocket full of cash.

-[Plowman] Yep! -[Rick] Okay, gone!

-[Dave] He's gone. -[Plowman] Chain is gone?

[Rick] Yep!

[narrator] The nets will have to soak overnight...

[narrator] She's a 15-year veteran of the Newfoundland fishery...

[narrator] ...but the new owner is a rookie skipper.

There she is, welcome to the Crane's legacy.

The skipper of the Crane's Legacy is the one and only Rick Crane,

and that would be me.

Someone says, do you think you're a good fisherman?

I say I do. They say, why? I said, I don't try to be cocky.

Actually, I am cocky so... okay...

but I've got where I'm at, not by stuff getting handed to me,

by making the right decisions and putting in a lot of hard work

and doing things that others don't.

[narrator] And he'll have to push even harder now.

The new boat's kicked him up into the big leagues.

I paid nearly $200,000 for this boat and I feel the stress like mad.

It's crazy, like the first week, I puked three times.

I got no sleep, I was up every hour

wondering am I gonna lose everything?

I just need to catch fish and make money.

Rick's recruited two of his best friends from high school.

My crew consists of two guys I grew up with.

We played together, fought together, stole each other's girlfriends,

we've done whatever you could do,

and no issue is gonna break up our friendship.

[narrator] Rick's after 11,000 pounds of crab.

More than enough to cover his first boat payment.

[narrator] This is his first haul of the season.

[Darryl] Iceberg right ahead.

There's an iceberg about half a mile long.

Huge iceberg.

[narrator] Morris Anstey and the crew of the Sebastian Sails

have picked a notorious strip of the North Atlantic

to launch their crab season.

We calls it Iceberg Alley, and it's a very big risk to go fishing there.

You don't see no worse than that.

[Anstey] An iceberg can destroy a boat within seconds.

Below the surface of the water is nine times bigger than above the water.

[narrator] It was one of these giants drifting south from Greenland

that sent the Titanic to the bottom.

[Anstey] I'm an aggressive fisherman.

I puts all my effort into it, because right to this day,

I still thinks about how I got to where I'm to now.

[narrator] The only reason Morris is a skipper now

is because of his brother Corey.

He bought Morris his first boat just before he died at age 28.

And that's what drives me, knowing what he did for me.

I was going to make sure, I was going to prove to him that I could do it.

I'm still doing it, even though he's not around to see it.

But I'm still keeping up my word. Keeping my word to him.

We're going to haul this fleet of gear and see how much crab is into it.

Sounds like a plan, sir.

[narrator] Morris's first mate is Darryl Fudge,

who's been with him for more than 17 years.

[Darryl] It's time to get some crab.

He catches his fish, that's the main thing.

I've never known Morris to ever give up.

[narrator] The rest of his crew is family...

His dad Leonard, Uncle Merv and Cousin Russell.

[Anstey] There's a lot of people depending on me.

I got to provide for them.

It's about our whole family.

It's a family business.

[narrator] The goal this trip is to fill the Sebastian Sails

with 42,000 pounds of crab, worth $115,000.

[narrator] The crab line is wrapped around the port side stabilizer.

[narrator] They're stuck in the worst possible place...

[Russell] Hey, Morris!

[Darryl] There's ice.

[narrator] ...right in the path of an iceberg.

[Anstey] An iceberg can rip you open just like a can of sardines.

[Darryl] Let's get the [bleep] clear of that iceberg.

-[Mervin] Oh, I'm going to lose it. -Hurry up!

An iceberg can destroy anything that gets in its path.

[narrator] It doesn't look like a big one

but, with icebergs, it's what you can't see that kills you.

[narrator] They finally yank the gear free...

and Morris guns it to get out of the way.

That was a close call, sir.

[Anstey] You never knows what you got to face, there's always a risk.

You got to think fast sometimes.

[narrator] But it turns out the iceberg did get a piece of them.

Two or three pots we got destroyed now.

[narrator] The pots were crushed when the iceberg dragged them along the bottom.

I'm gonna move them a bit then shoot them out again.

[Darryl] Go on then.

[narrator] They put the near miss behind them and move on.

[Darryl] We're back on the road again.

[Anstey] I don't know how you get ahead if you don't take chances sometimes.

I know there's a few crab around this area

and I got no choice but to try and get some.

[narrator] To the west, aboard Crane's Legacy...

[Crane] I am smelling something good downstairs, smells like bacon.

[narrator] ...Skipper Rick sets a course back to the crab grounds,

while the crew fixes breakfast.

Bacon once again.

I'm going to boil some eggs, and have some brown toast.

Same old, same old.

We'll see, I guess if I'm going to get it hand delivered or...

if I'm gonna have to go look for it again.

[narrator] At sea, it's customary for the crew to bring the captain his meal.

Well, I must go to work. Somebody got to work.

I'll be out in a second.

On any other fishing boat, the cook makes sure the Captain gets it first.

That way there's no delays, his attention is focused up here.

[narrator] But Keith isn't budging.

[Crane] Hey, boys, where you at? In the kitchen or on the deck?

[Cox] Rope's on the deck, I'm in the kitchen.

'Kay, is breakfast ready?

[Cox] Yep.

Rick wants his food delivered, he's going to have to go to a restaurant.

I'm not backing down from that. I-- I don't do that [bleep].

Skipper don't need to put her in neutral, and walking down and getting food

when there's two fellers down there, chewing fat.

Come up and bring it up.

[narrator] To the skipper, it's a sign of disrespect.

I gotta go downstairs [bleep] get me food, you could've brought it up to me. [bleep].

You got time to smoke, you got time to come down get your breakfast.

They leave the pots and head for port.

Doing pretty good.

But if you miss a day because of inexperience or mistake,

well, that's the worst feeling that you can ever imagine.

the crew of the Seadoo is getting an early start on day two.

I've been working, and saving my Turbot money, Momma.

[narrator] They're about to haul in their first fleet of Turbot nets.

[Conway] It's nerve wracking.

I can't afford to haul back this with nothing into it.

[narrator] Conway's coming off a bad run.

For the last couple of years, he's barely been able to keep his head above water.

This is a do or die. I mean, if I don't make money,

I can't pay back the bills I owes.

[Rick] Come on, fish.

[Conway] Oh, the first northern fish, boy!

-[Dave] Yeah! -[Conway] First northern fish!

[Plowman] Oh oh, Turbot! Perfect!

she busted off on us yesterday morning, both ends.

[narrator] Conway's nets could be snagged on the other fisherman's lost gear.

Yeah, that's what's going on now, I guess our nets is loaded

and your nets is loaded and we ain't got nothing strong enough to haul it up.

[radio] Roger, yeah, probably it.

This is an actual [bleep] nightmare.

Not good, that's not good.

Gonna go back down and find the other end.

[narrator] Every fleet of nets has a buoy at both ends.

[Conway] Right now we got to go to the other end and haul against the tide,

and hopefully whatever is snagged in is gonna let go.

[narrator] The plan is to swing around, pick up the other buoy

and try pulling from that end.

I'm running out of options. Once we gets this gear,

it gotta come back from this end.

I'll get the high flier, you pass that up to Dave.

Hopefully, we get our nets.

[Plowman] Lord, oh, Jesus.

We got a lot of strain on this thing, boy.

We're gonna keep hauling our gear now, keep hauling 'til we can't haul no more.

[narrator] Suddenly, the tension lets up.

Coming a little bit anyway, I don't know how many nets we're gonna get but...

They're coming, boy, they're coming.

[Plowman] Anyway, we're back in action again.

[narrator] The bad news is, a twisted net doesn't catch as many fish.

[Conway] They've slowed down compared to the first net.

Seems like they're a bit scarce to me.

You got bait coming up and no fish by it.

[Plowman] Oh, well.

[narrator] They only bagged 8,000 pounds, about half what they wanted.

[Conway] It ain't gonna be good every day. There's always gonna be trouble.

That's just a part of the game.

[narrator] Still, it could have been much worse.

At least, they saved their gear.

[Conway] I bet that we could get it from the other end,

and Dad, and the crew, and we got it.

We got the first one back, boys.

the crew is pulling in the first string of crab pots.

[narrator] Down below, the skipper is scrounging for food,

They had theirs nice and warm, right when it was ready,

right out of the pan. Look at that, cold.

They looked after their selves first. Wrong way on this boat.

Hopefully there's going to be lots of crabs.

are hunting snow crab.

Where we're at now, there is a good sign, there's a good sign of crab.

A lot of big crab too.

[narrator] For Morris, the close call sets off alarm bells.

[Anstey] She's rocking and rolling so the stabilizer keeps her steady,

so we got to get that fish in the water.

[narrator] They call the stabilizer a fish because it drops into the water

and swims alongside the boat.
