- Meet Asabi, a brand-new mom

to seven-month-old adorable baby girl Zola.

After childbirth, Asabi started to suffer

from postpartum depression,

and desperately wanted a new look

for her upcoming girls' trip to Cabo.

- I was super, super excited

after I had my daughter to finally style my hair

however I wanted to style it.

- Asabi turned to her sister and beautician Kene

to give her a sexy new look.

What Asabi wanted was a platinum blond pixie cut.

But what she got was a fried chemical mess,

which caused all her hair to fall out.

- It's coming out. - Oh, my God.

- Since losing her hair,

Asabi and her sister have been distant.

We need to get these two sisters back together,

and get Asabi the blonde pixie she always wanted.

Okay, I was reading the letter you sent to me.

Could you elaborate a little bit more

about what exactly happened?

- Yeah. - My sister Kene

was supposed to do a relaxer on my hair.

- Okay. - A blonde pixie cut

to be exact, because I'm going on a trip

to Cabo with my girls.

So me, being a new mom,

I wanted to come out finally and have

this undeniable confidence that I used to have.

- Especially after you have a baby,

it's like you want to have a mommy makeover

to feel like your old self again.

- Absolutely. - Yeah.

- So my sister Kene was supposed to do

a Zendaya-inspired platinum pixie cut.

Instead, she burned it all off on relaxed bleached hair.

- Lord Jesus. - Oh, my God.

- She was combing the relaxer through my hair,

and chunks of hair was falling out.

- Wow. - Like chunks, big chunks.

- This is hair-coloring 101.

You cannot put bleach on relaxed hair.

Those are two opposing chemicals.

When it's mixed together, it explodes,

and it will cause hair to fall out.

- Ooh, child, like dynamite.

- Yes, exactly!

- Me dealing with, like, postpartum depression,

you just feel like--

- Somebody else. - You're not--yeah.

- I had postpartum. I understand completely.

- Within those nine months of me being pregnant,

I was not able to color my hair,

so with this pixie cut, I really wanted

to come out of that

and get that opportunity to feel like Asabi again.

- Can I see your hair?

- I don't know, child. It's a little rough under here.

- [laughs]

Okay. It's pretty short.

- Yeah.

- How did that leave your relationship

with your sister?

- I haven't let her do my hair since then.

- Have there been any conversation about it?

- She was like, "Well, maybe you can grow your hair out,

and we can try it again."

- Oh, no. She not gonna put no more--

- Not try that again.

- Right, right. - No, God.

[laughter] - Right.

- Well, did she say I'm sorry, I can't believe this happened?

- She did say she's sorry.

She did kind of laugh it off, too.

- What? - My relationship with Kene

has been a rollercoaster throughout the years.

This is definitely something that has broken my trust

with her doing my hair.

I was looking for that coming out moment,

and my sister kind of took that from me.

I'm sorry. I'm getting emotional.

[sobs] I'm sorry.

- It's okay. I've been there.

- It's a really hard thing

to go through, postpartum.

And just...

- Trying to find yourself.

- Yeah, like, I just wanted to be beautiful.

- Yeah.

- But I just don't-- I just don't feel that way.

I have been there.

- I'm so sorry. - I know what it feels like

not to feel like yourself, and you see what we see,

but I'm telling you right now you're so gorgeous.

And those of us who's gone through it,

we all feel sorry for each other

because it's nothing you can do.

You want to, you know, bond with your baby,

but it's just something that stops you.

It is not easy.

All right, we need to talk to sissy and find out

what had happened was.

We promised Asabi we'd get her some answers,

so that's exactly what we're going to do.

We told her beautician Kene

that she'd be coming to our salon

for an opportunity to work

with celebrity hair stylist Johnny Wright.

But what she doesn't know is Asabi and I

will be in the surveillance room,

listening to every word.

I'll have a microphone,

and I'll be feeding Johnny information from the back.

The mission: to get some answers

and bust Kene.

[dramatic music]

- Hi.

- Oh, my God. There she is right there.

- I'm here to see Mr. Johnny Wright.

- Okay.

- Aren't you nervous?

- I'm really-- - Oh, my God.

I would be.

If I was busting my sister, oh, my God.

- Asabi came to us because she wanted

a platinum sexy pixie,

but instead her sister Kene

fried her hair with relaxer,

causing chunks of her hair to fall out.

Asabi's preparing for a girls' trip to Cabo,

but she can't go with a messed up do.

So we're gonna help to bust this beautician.

- Kene? - Oh, my God!

- How are you?

- Hi. How are you?

- I'm really happy that you came out

and talked to me today.

How long you been doing hair?

- I've actually been doing hair for about 20 years.

- Twenty years?

- Yeah, I was a kid-- - How old are you?

- I'm 31. - Oh, okay.

I started young, too. - I started young.

- Yeah. - But, I mean,

as a cosmetologist, like working in the salon

in the industry, it's only been about two years.

- So she has a license.

- So you are licensed?

- No. I am currently an apprentice

in an apprenticeship program.

- So what is your specialty? What do you love to do?

- I'm primarily a braider, but I love color.

- Yeah, she loves color 'cause she put bleach.

[laughs] - Oh, my God.

- Do you have a particular color

that you love doing the most?

- I think I like blondes.

- This is bad. [laughs]

- Do you feel like there's anything

you struggle with when it comes down to hair?

- Yeah. - What is that?

- Relaxers.

I'm nervous. - How so?

- So my youngest sister Asabi wanted a relaxer,

but we had been processing her hair with lightener,

and I've always heard you can't do a relaxer

on top off bleach.

- Exactly.

- Why did she put the relaxer in if she knew?

- So I told her, you know, I explained everything to her.

She wanted it anyway. I finally did it.

- So you're saying she insisted on you

doing something that you knew was gonna take her hair out?

- Yes.

- Was she upset?

- No, because I explained everything to her.

- No, I was definitely upset when it happened.

Kene didn't really warn me

about all of those things that she's saying right now,

and it's just misleading.

- I pulled up some pictures of your work.

- Oh, great.

- I wanted to thumb through that with you.

So you say you do a lot of braiding.

Is that what's happened here? - Yes.

- Okay. Looks great. - Thank you.

- This here? - Yes.

She wanted fantasy color,

and she wanted an A-line haircut.

- The A-line could be worked on just a little bit.

But we can work on that. - Okay.

- It's okay. - [laughs]

- All right, so tell me what's going on here?

[dramatic music]

- Ooh. That's my sister.

Oh. It's like the worst thing ever

being exposed about you to someone you admire.

- What is that? - That's her hair.

[laughs] I told you.

- No! - I tried to tell you.

- Why is she laughing? - What is she doing?

- I told her, like, "I don't think this is a good idea."

She wanted it anyway.

- No. - Come on, let's go.

- First of all, she did not come detangled.

She didn't do any of the things that I told her.

- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Kene, your sis wanted to holla at you.

- Kene, you messed up my hair.

[dramatic music]

[hip-hop music]

- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Kene!

- Ooh!

- Your sis wanted to holla at you.

- Uh, what type of situation is this?

Hold on.

- Kene, you messed up my hair,

and I don't trust you anymore doing my hair.

- Ooh.

- How do you feel right now? - Yeah, Kene--

- This is interesting, you guys.

Like, you feel like it was intentional?

Is that what you're saying?

- You said that it could possibly break off,

but you didn't say all of my hair would break off.

- I told you.

The relaxer on your new growth

for sure is gonna be successful.

On the hair that you have that's lightened,

it may break off, so I said,

"Be prepared. We may have to go

shorter than you want."

But you wanted a pixie cut.

- I wasn't prepared for a buzz cut

and to feel like a dude.

- Girl, bye. You know I warned you.

I explained everything to you from top to bottom.

- Do you remember demanding that she does it?

- Come on. Are we gonna do this?

- I insisted for her to do it.

- You didn't tell us that. - Oh, look at that.

- She left that out. Sis left that out.

- Let me tell you something. It is not

hard for me to say no to my siblings.

- Really? Listen, having sisters are tough.

I know that there has been times

my sisters got me to do things that I did not want to do.

But I did them anyway.

Why were you so persistent

after she told you that it could break?

- I really wanted to feel beautiful again.

You know, struggling with postpartum

and all of that.

The relaxer and pixie cut would've helped that,

but it didn't turn out that way at all.

- You didn't tell me anything

about you having postpartum.

- I had postpartum. - Okay.

- It's not something that you want to tell everybody.

You know, you don't want nobody to think that something is off.

- Yeah. - So they don't judge you.

And the other part of it is trying and struggling

every single day to feel like yourself.

[melancholy music]

- I didn't know that at all.

Her getting pregnant caused some issues between us--

- Why?

- We live together.

And she got with her husband, then she gets pregnant.

And then they got married. It all happened so fast.

And due to that, she left me in L.A.

with my daughter, alone, when we had an agreement

that we were all helping each other.

She just abandoned me.

- I didn't want do what I did.

But, like, I had to think of the best way to be a mom.

- Right.

- As sisters, sometimes we feel like

we have this language where you're supposed to know

how I feel, and I'm supposed to know how you feel.

It's not like that. We're still individuals.

We're still our own women, right?

- Right.

- Would you like to see her hair?

- Ooh, what's going on? Yeah.

You're never supposed to put bleach and relaxer

on the same head.

So I have a good friend. His name is Uno.

He has figured out a way to bleach the hair

and have it straight at the same time.

- Oh, without getting your head snatched?

- That's what he says.

So this is my friend Uno.

- Hi. - This is Kene.

- Nice to meet you. - Hi, nice to meet you.

- Uno has created a product called

the Perfect Platinum Pixie,

which is what you were trying to create on your sister.

- Right. Going into this bootcamp,

I'm nervous because I would hope

that I could give it another go with my sister

because as we saw,

the first time, it did not go well.

And I don't want to look crazy twice.

- What were some of the issues that you had

with achieving the perfect platinum pixie last time?

- I had already processed her hair, at that point,

overly with the bleach.

So the integrity of the hair was compromised.

- Understandable. And what did you--

- But you also put a relaxer on it?

- You did what? - [laughs]

- How you just gonna forget that part?

- I thought we were talking about the pixie part.

- You put a relaxer-- - We never got to the pixie

because it fell off.

- That's what I meant by the integrity of the hair.

- Yeah, okay.

- So that's the part that you messed up?

- Yes, yes. - Yes.

- Okay, do you know how to properly mix the bleach?

- Yes, I do. - Okay.

Well, then you're gonna take the bleach.

You're gonna start off with 40 volume.

So on your first go-round, you're gonna process it

with the processing cap. No heat.

- Okay. - And you want to make sure

you take small sections,

an eighth of an inch section.

- Okay.

- I'm just applying it on the tips.

- You think you got it? - Yeah.

- All right, so, Uno, pass over the baton

and let her play with it.

- Oh, great. - There you go.

Good start.

You have to use your fingers as a tool

when you're doing hair. - Oh, yes, tool.

- So in 20 years that you've been doing hair,

you've never done this before.

- No, I have not.

This will actually be my first, like, pixie cut.

- Wait a minute. Did your sister know this,

that you ain't never did no pixie cut before?

- Yes, because I told her.

- She knew that? - I told her everything, yes.

- Oh, sis said she's gonna be a guinea pig.

- Asabi agreed to let Kene assist me in doing her hair,

so while the bleach is doing its thing,

I'm gonna step away in hopes

that they can reconnect and talk

about some of their issues.

- [clears throat] - So how do you feel?

[dramatic music]

- I don't know.

I'm disappointed in Kene,

and I don't think I can trust her

with doing my hair again.

Um...

[hip-hop music]

- [clears throat] - So how do you feel?

- Um, this trip to Cabo,

this hairstyle was what I wanted for that.

That's why I had you do it.

- I probably should've just said,

"I don't feel comfortable doing a relaxer on you,"

but I wanted to give you what you wanted.

I just went about it the wrong way,

so I just want to apologize for that.

- I really appreciate your apology

'cause that...

you know, was a tough phase for me.

But I'm also proud of you.

- Thank you, Asabi. I appreciate that.

That means a lot.

- Me being able to confront Kene about this

feels good because we were able to talk it out,

and find a resolution to the problem.

- All right, voilà.

Now that we have shampooed the bleach out of your hair,

I'm gonna towel-dry it a little bit.

And what we're gonna apply first?

- We're gonna apply the filler.

- Exactly.

Since Kene isn't a licensed beautician,

I am going to apply the bleach to Asabi,

and Kene will assist me.

We'll fill her up from hair to hair for the straightening.

Okay? So I take my comb and the agent,

and let's get going.

All right, here we go. - Okay.

- It only stays on for 30 seconds to a minute.

See how fast that's working?

- Yeah, wow. - Time to rinse it out.

- Okay, so we're ready for the next step.

- Exactly, so go ahead and shampoo, condition,

and you'll finish her up.

- When we first met Asabi, her hair was...

I mean barely there,

'cause her sister had burnt it off.

- It's true. She didn't have a lot of hair,

but the little hair that she had left,

we've turned into gold.

- Well, I can't wait to see it.

I invited their mother René to the reveal

'cause I wanted her to see the final look.

So, Mom, what were you thinking

when Kene had this catastrophe with your baby girl?

- I was like, "Wow, I can't believe Kene did this."

[laughter]

- I'm still struggling with postpartum a little bit,

but this has definitely boosted my confidence.

[laughter] I'm excited to go to Cabo.

And, Kene, I would like you to do my hair again.

- I'm back in action!

[laughter]

- I'm very excited to be invited

back into, you know, Asabi's world

as her stylist.

It means a lot because it also symbolizes

the progression of our relationship.

- Well, I know you guys haven't seen each other

in a while, and I'm feeling a family reunion coming on.

- That's right! - Yes!

- I know Asabi came to us to fix her hair,

but I really think she came

to fix her relationship with her sister.

- Listen, Johnny, hairstylists come and go,

but family is forever.

And I'm glad that they were able

to work out their differences.

And she was able to have her platinum blonde pixie cut

that she always wanted.

- It really looks so good.
