[wind whistling]
- [Abel Voiceover] On the frontier there are hunters
and the hunted.
For the hunted, their only chance of survival is to blend,
to hide, at times to run.
Though some folks say there ain't no courage in running,
that you're a coward, that you gotta fight,
those folks don't understand,
they don't understand what it means to take a life.
Or to accept that yours is at an end.
They don't know what it's like to be hunted.
To cling on for dear life.
To know that death is around the corner.
[steady breathing]
Hell, the only thing that matters out here
is making it out alive.
[gun banging]
[light music]
[tapping]
[fire crackling]
[heavy breathing]
[clanking]
- Easy, girl.
It's getting cold.
- [Henry] How was it?
- [Abel] It was all right, Henry.
Got a couple of rabbits.
Feed us for a few more days.
These furs will be useful, though.
Not for selling but I'll do something with 'em.
- Abel, Duke's dead.
- Where is he?
- He's back there in the corner.
- Dog was getting old.
- [Henry] Yeah.
- Probably wouldn't of lasted the winter anyways.
How'd it go for you, though?
- [Henry] Not too good.
- Now why is that?
- Son of a bitch.
Paid me 4.50 for the whole load.
- [Abel] 4.50?
- I tried, Abel.
I told him I wasn't gonna stand for none
of this cockamamie bullshit.
- You didn't fight him, did you, Henry?
- No, I thought about it.
He had them other two with him.
- Can't have you starting nothin' with Randall now.
- Well who we gonna sell to, Abel?
- I don't know.
We gotta meet with Randall, though, again next week.
I need you to polite, I need you to keep your head.
He's all we got right now.
I got a couple more pelts for him this time.
If he's still gonna be stubborn about his offer then...
I guess we'll find someone else.
If there is anybody else.
All right, I'm gonna get a shovel.
[thudding]
[heavy breathing]
- Ground's tough.
Your turn.
Come here, Duke.
You know, they say California's full of gold.
- Yeah, that's what they say.
- Might be more money.
- And more digging.
- Yeah.
But more money.
- Henry, you just got flustered.
We're having to dig a three foot hole.
Now you wanna go digging in California.
For gold.
- Well, it's a bigger shovel.
- What's wrong with this one?
- Besides, it's not just digging, they call it panning.
Scoop dirt out the bottom of the river and sift it
and then there's little flakes of gold at the bottom.
- Yeah, Henry, I know what panning is.
- Maybe this Spring we head on over there.
- [Abel] Maybe.
[light music]
[door creaking]
- Weighed Lily down for the night.
- I found another Indian out today, Henry.
He looked Shoshone.
I don't think he's alone.
I'm pretty sure they're moving into the valley.
- What's that mean for us?
- What the hell happened to the coffee?
- Hey, what's that got to do with the Indians?
- Yeah, when those Indians come, skin your damn head,
I ain't gonna have any coffee to give 'em.
- That's all right, Abel, coffee's always around.
Coffee don't taste too good.
- I like it.
- Abel, you, you think we gotta
be worried about them Indians?
- Well.
Yeah, Henry, I do.
They're starting to worry me a little bit.
- It's gonna be three winters since they left us.
- Why you thinking 'bout Pops?
- He'd just always know what to do.
- Yeah.
I'll figure it out.
Don't worry.
[water trickling]
I don't know, Henry, this isn't really doing it for us.
We'll set these up further downstream.
See if we can get anything.
- Yeah, we'll see.
- Let's get moving, though.
- You cold, girl?
- You hold her, Henry,
like she's the only girl you ever held.
- She is.
Ain't that right, Lily?
- Let's go.
[light music]
[gun banging]
[wind whistling]
You ready?
- Yep.
See you found more coffee.
- You're right.
What time did you all arrange to meet?
- [Henry] It's around midday.
- All right.
- [Henry] Is this all I'm bringing this time?
- It's just them beavers, right?
- [Henry] Yeah, all four of 'em.
- All four of 'em.
Henry?
You gonna be okay all alone this time?
- You gonna be going far this time?
- Just don't get all hotheaded on me.
And no, I'm headed around these mountains.
Probably go down to the river
see if I can find me anything there.
Not much left in these mountains, Henry.
Can't leave you alone for too long, though.
Next thing I know you're gonna get Lily killed.
- Hey, Duke wasn't my fault.
Come on, girl.
- Yeah, whatever you say.
- [Henry] Better get more than rabbit this time.
- Yep, I'll do my best.
[dramatic music]
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Randall?
- Henry.
What'd you bring me?
- [Henry] Got you some beaver.
Four of 'em, to be exact.
- Bring it here.
Four pelts?
- Yeah.
- I'll give you eight dollars for the lot.
- It's twice that.
You think I'm joking?
- Henry, I'm offering you eight dollars,
you take it or you don't, I don't care.
- You ain't gonna do this to me again, Randall.
- Do what?
- Quit trying to swindle me, you bastard.
- Henry, beaver just ain't what it used to be no more.
Maybe you'd know that if you
got out of these damn mountains.
- Well it ain't worth two dollars a pelt.
- Look at you, Henry Iron, you can do some math.
- Yeah?
I'll just bust in your teeth.
[thudding]
[grunting]
- Send your brother next time.
[groaning]
[leaves rustling]
God speed, Henry Iron.
- Son of a bitch.
[gun firing]
[horses trotting]
Let's go, girl, let's go.
Ya!
Ya!
Ya, girl, let's go.
[gun firing]
No.
No, no, no, no, Lily.
Lily, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, Lily.
[dramatic music]
- Hey, go back for Jeb.
[Indian yelling]
[barking]
[gun firing]
- Godspeed, Henry Iron.
[Lily squealing]
- I'm so sorry, Lily.
I'm so sorry.
[Lily neighing]
[heavy breathing]
I'm sorry, Lily.
[gun banging]
[light music]
Abel?
Abel?
[door creaking]
Hey, Abel.
Where are you?
- Henry, Henry, Henry, Henry, wake up.
Henry, Henry, we need to leave right now.
Get your things ready.
- [Henry] Why?
- [Abel] Can't explain it.
- [Henry] Why's there blood on your face?
- Listen.
Henry?
Where's Lily?
Where's Lily, Henry?
- Dead.
She's dead.
- [Abel] What?
- I had to shoot her.
Abel, why is there blood on your face?
- What the hell happened today, Henry?
- I pulled my rifle on Randall and things escalated.
Lily didn't make it.
- I told you.
I told you, Henry, that Indians are moving into our valley.
And now they have good reason to track
us home and kill us both.
And you've killed our only way out.
Get your things, Henry, we're leaving.
- [Henry] Leaving?
Where are we gonna leave to?
- I don't know.
- Abel, why can't we stay and fight?
- Because this is what happens, Henry.
This is what happens.
- Abel, wait.
Abel, wait.
Listen to me, Abel.
Winter is coming, we ain't gonna have no food
nor shelter while we're out there.
We're not gonna survive, Abel.
- It's our only option, Henry.
- Running?
- Yeah, running.
It's not about being tough.
It's not about fighting.
It's about making it out alive.
And we can either fight the Winter out there
or we can fight the Indians here.
But we have a better chance against the Winter
'cause she ain't hellbent on killing us.
Fighting's not always the answer, Henry.
- [Henry] Sometimes it is.
- Yeah, Henry?
[thudding]
And sometimes it isn't.
Why do you always gotta be fighting, Henry?
- I don't know.
- What do you even fight for?
- You.
- Get up.
We're leaving.
- Looks like we're finally leaving you, Pops.
How we gonna do this?
- Head down the valley to the river.
Once we cross that there's a trail
from the Rocky Mountain Fur Company.
We'll take that out west.
- We gonna stop and grab the traps?
- Ain't a whole lotta time.
- We're gonna need 'em.
- I guess.
Make it quick, though.
- Are we gonna make it out?
- Henry?
We don't got another choice.
It's either that or I can bury you here next to Pops.
- See you soon, Pops.
I woulda buried you next to Duke.
[light music]
[wind whistling]
You know, Abel, one day I wanna kill a bear.
- Why's that, man?
- What?
- Why do you wanna kill a bear, Henry?
- Well can you imagine tellin' folks
you took on a grizzly bear.
- Now it's a grizzly bear.
- Yeah.
You don't wanna tell folks you killed
a little old black bear.
- Why do you wanna tell folks you killed a bear at all?
- 'Cause I'm tougher than a damn bear.
- What's that prove?
- What?
- What's that prove, Henry?
- Prove?
Don't prove nothing, ya see.
It's intimidation.
You tell a fella you killed a grizzly bear,
well, he's less likely to cheat, steal, or fight ya.
- You could just tell 'em if that's all you want.
- Well 'cause then if he does try to fight me
I'm tough enough to take him on.
[heavy breathing]
- Since you killed a grizzly bear
you're gonna be tough enough to win any fight?
- Well.
Yeah.
You'd expect.
- [Abel] Dumbass.
- What?
[light music]
Guess we know what it's like now.
- What what's like?
- Being hunted.
- Henry, we're not being hunted.
- Why do you think those Indians are tracking us?
- We hunt to survive, Henry.
It's a different
reason when there's revenge.
- Is that what we're doing?
Just surviving?
- There ain't no shame in survival, Henry.
- What about living?
- Survivin' is livin'.
- Not to me, it ain't.
Survival, it's like a trail you run up
to get to the top of a mountain.
Once you get there you die
'cause you're so damn tired.
You don't know what it looks like.
- What what looks like?
- To be on top of a mountain.
- Well, Henry, you got lucky.
Looks like we ain't having rabbit for dinner.
Now that's interesting.
- You're telling me.
- Think it's trouble?
- I don't know.
[man singing]
- Henry, get your rifle ready.
- Ready.
- I'll be back.
โช It ain't over
โช 'Til the wind blow
โช Roses are red
โช Violets are blue
โช And you know I
โช I love you
- That's an odd place to stop.
- Seen you coming from aways off.
- I hope so.
- [Henry] What's your business?
- Just passing on through.
- To where?
- You know, I noticed earlier you weren't alone.
Where's your friend?
- Why?
- I don't wanna get robbed.
- [Abel] You gonna rob us?
- Nope.
- [Abel] All right, then.
- That's it?
- [Abel] What's it?
- We're done here?
- Yeah.
We're done.
- Well, thank you for that stimulating conversation.
The jumped on that ferry, their guns was drawed,
they was gonna kill every last one of us.
- You still ain't convincin' me.
- What?
I'm telling you, they was pirates.
- Yeah, but I don't believe it.
- You insinuating I'm a liar?
- You been telling your far-out tales all day,
I ain't know what to believe.
- I ain't no saint but I sure as hell ain't no liar.
- All right, truthsayer.
Then tell me this: how's a man like you gonna dig for gold?
[laughs]
- What?
- Nothing, it's funny, that's all.
- Bah, I am the hardest damn worker you ever seen.
- All right.
- Have you heard nothing 'bout gold in California?
Why a man could work there for one summer,
have enough gold for a lifetime.
- Looks like you only got one summer left.
- I guess I won't need much gold now, will I?
[laughs]
Say, what brought you folks out here?
- Mama died on the planes and dad had joined
the Rocky Mountain Fur Company so he took us with him.
- Oh.
Well they say that some men
come out here to find themselves.
- No.
Men come out here to die.
- So um, why you comin' all the way out here?
Risking your life when you could
just die peacefully out east?
- Die peacefully out east?
They ain't no opportunity for me to die peaceful-like
back where I come from.
- Now why is that?
- When a man runs from his problems
eventually they catch up to him.
- Aren't you not still running?
- I'm still breathing, ain't I?
[laughs]
I'm still breathing.
Say, how about some of that coffee?
[fire crackling]
- Why?
[gun banging]
[horse neighing]
- You just blown my scooter off.
What's the matter with you?
No.
[yelling]
[horse galloping]
[man laughing]
- [Abel] Let's go.
- [Man] I'm still breathing.
[light music]
[chain jingling]
- Damn it.
Henry, this seems to be gettin' us nowhere.
Henry, let's get moving.
- Can't we just rest here a little longer?
- [Abel] Henry, those Indians are right on our trail.
We don't got time to rest.
- Hey, what's it matter?
I still can't believe that asshole asked for coffee.
- Is that what you're upset about?
- Just what kinda asshole trades coffee
for a warm meal then asks for the coffee back?
Who does that?
- An asshole.
Come on, Henry.
Let's get going.
[light music]
[wind whistling]
- Abel?
I gotta piss.
[sniffles]
- You know them Indians are gonna be real
happy about that trail of piss you're leaving 'em.
- You don't think they'll follow our tracks?
Besides, how do you think they know it's my piss?
Think they eat it?
- Henry, now why would they eat your piss?
- I dunno.
Tell the difference between your piss, my piss,
bear piss, deer piss, squirrel piss,
rabbit piss, duck piss.
Abel.
Abel.
Abel, wait.
Hey.
Abel.
Abel.
Wait.
- Is this all we got?
- Ow.
- We're gonna die out here.
- Shut up.
Abel.
- What, Henry?
- You reckon there's pretty women down in the valley?
- Probably better options than up here.
[laughs]
Considering you've been the only company I've had
for quite some time now.
I reckon just about anybody would
be prettier than your ugly ass.
- My ugly ass?
My ass is pretty.
- Now how would you even know?
- Matches my personality.
- What?
Obnoxious and protruding?
- Well, that's not nice.
How long you reckon 'til that sun sets?
Reckon like three hours?
- All right, Henry.
We gotta get across this river.
- Yeah.
[groaning]
- [Abel] Henry, make sure you piss
before we leave this time--
[Henry shushes]
[dramatic music]
Henry!
[screaming] [gun banging]
[thudding]
[splashing]
[gun banging]
[heavy breathing]
[groaning]
- Abel!
Abel!
- Henry!
[gun banging]
- Help, Abel!
Abel!
- Henry!
[gun banging]
- Abel, save me.
Abel!
- Henry! - Help me.
Abel!
Abel.
Abel, help.
- Henry.
- Help, Abel.
- Henry.
[grunting]
Henry.
Come on, Henry, let's go.
Come on.
[wind whistling]
[Henry groaning]
[light music]
- I ain't gonna make it.
- Yeah you will, Henry.
You're a fighter.
Hell, that's all you do is fight.
You fight one more time.
Just for me.
[fire crackling]
[light music]
[coughing]
- Abel?
Can we go home?
[sniffling]
- Henry.
Henry.
Henry, I gotta make some breakfast.
Here.
Come on.
Henry.
Damn it, Henry.
Henry, wake up.
Henry, wake up.
Henry.
Henry.
[crying]
Henry, wake up.
Henry!
Henry!
I'm so sorry.
Henry, I'm so sorry.
[dramatic music]
This is all my fault
[rocks crumbling]
[arrow smacking]
[gun banging]
[thudding]
[gun banging]
[screaming]
[grunting]
[hollering]
[thudding]
[groaning]
[gun banging]
You saved my ass, little brother.
It's cold outside, huh?
- Yep.
- [Abel] All right, Henry, let's get you dressed.
- [Henry] Where we goin'?
- [Abel] We're going back.
We're going home.
[light music]
[coughing]
Come on.
- It's been one hell of a week.
- Week ain't over yet.
- [Henry] Oh, I done spoke too soon.
- How you doin', Henry?
- I'm cold.
- All right.
I'm gonna get a fire started.
- We need to keep moving.
- Ah, it's all right.
I'm sure going back on our trail will
turn them Indians around a bit.
Just stay here, stay warm.
- [Henry] All right.
- I'll be right back.
[snow crunching]
[dramatic music]
- I feel like finding firewood in this forest
would be pretty easy.
- [Abel] Henry, we need to leave.
I'm sorry.
- Why?
- They're here.
[dramatic music]
[wind whistling]
Henry, come on.
Henry!
Henry.
[Abel heavy breathing]
Henry.
Henry.
Henry.
Henry, come on.
Henry.
Sit up, let's go.
Come on.
[grunting]
Come on.
[fire crackling]
Hey, Henry.
How ya feeling?
- [Henry] What happened?
- [Abel] You passed out.
It's been a couple of days now.
- [Henry] I'm hungry.
- [Abel] You're back to normal.
- [Henry] Yeah.
Well, bet they ain't around the corner no more.
- [Abel] Yeah, let's hope so.
- [Henry] Where you goin'?
- [Abel] To get our last rifle.
And everything else I couldn't carry.
- [Henry] We got any food?
- [Abel] We got some coffee.
- [Henry] That's it?
- [Abel] Yep.
- [Henry] How is it that after we lose everything,
that damn coffee still around?
- [Abel] I don't know, Henry.
I guess in the end you save the things you love
not the things you need.
- [Henry] Yeah.
Well how about next time we save the things we love.
I hate coffee.
[banging]
[hollering]
[thudding]
Abel!
[gun banging]
[Abel yelling]
[dramatic music]
[glass shattering]
[gun banging]
- Henry.
[coughing]
Henry.
Come on.
[slow somber music]
[fire crackling]
[yelling]
Burn!
Just leave.
Sorry, Henry.
I told you I'd figure it out.
I tried.
- I know.
[sobbing]
- He left, Henry.
He left and I didn't know what to do.
I was supposed to take care of you.
- I know, Abel, but you're not him.
I don't need you to be him.
I need my brother.
[light music]
[hollering]
[dramatic music]
Abel.
We need to go.
Abel, we need to go.
Abel.
We need to go!
We need to run!
- No.
- Abel, there's nothing left.
Abel.
Abel, listen to me.
We have nothing.
Abel, do you see what's coming?
Do you see that?
Abel, we can't fight that.
- You take this rifle.
You go to the top of that hill
it'll give you a clear shot for killing.
- Damn it, Abel.
We got nothing.
What are you fighting for?
- You.
- Hey.
You make it out of this, we're going to California.
[gun banging]
- [Indian] Hey.
- Damn.
We can't always shoot that good.
[gun banging]
- [Abel] Damn.
[grunting]
Damn it.
[thudding]
[groaning]
- Abel.
[screaming]
[gun banging]
Abel!
- Henry.
[speaking foreign language]
[heavy breathing]
The week got worse.
- Week ain't over.
[laughs]
At least we got a horse.
[horse neighing]
- Yeah.
โช The rain falls on my skin
โช I can feel your pain again
โช Echo through the valley and
โช Burning down within
โช Falling stairs and doorframes wood โช
โช A loner's mind understood
โช Monsters pry the closed eyes
โช If we don't live at least we tried โช
