has risen to wealth

through hard work
and God-given talent,

and he is being more generous
than most would be in conceding

that his wife might need
$9,000 a month for a year

and $5,000 a month
for two years after that,

and though the children's
obvious affection

for their mother
must warrant some visitation,

custody should go
to Mr. Broderick.

It is for Mrs. Broderick's own
good to limit her settlement.

If Your Honor makes
an artificially high award,

you really cripple her,
and in fact, it'll provide

a lack of incentive
to contribute to herself

when she is clearly a woman
of formidable abilities.

Only consider her performance
in this trial.

I wanted a husband
and a family.

Dan needed a wife
that could wait on him,

when Dan then considered
his earnings his sole property.

I think I've been very generous
in letting Mr. Broderick

calculate the value
of everything.

We have so much money,

more than enough to keep him
and his new family happy

and the family we have
happy too.

If I get the children,
I don't want them

to have to give up
their schools, music lessons,

trips, things that
are important to them

that we made important to them,
but at this stage of life,

I can hardly hope to match
Dan Broderick's earning power.
