which has befallen our dear friend,

I imagine none of us

though we all possess a genteel
competency, sufficient for tastes

that are elegant and refined,

and would not, even if they could,
be vulgarly ostentatious.

that whilst we have a penny to spare,

it would not only be our duty,

but a pleasure... A real pleasure!

what we can to assist her.

I can hardly think of what to say,

in the face of such generosity.

the position was reversed,

the presence of money isn't more
unsettling than the lack of it.

to see me about the mortgage!
