and Caitlyn Jenner introduced
herself to the world.

It was also the year we met
another Kaitlyn.

I'm talking about our
Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe.

Her journey was so shocking,
so scandalous

that we wondered if we could
even show it all again,

but before we get to all that,

we have to start
at the beginning

because for
the first time ever,

there wasn't just
one Bachelorette.

There were two.

That's right, two beautiful,
intelligent women,

both wanting to find love,

and in a "Bachelorette" first,

the men met both women
and then decided

who they wanted to pursue.

So was that
first night awkward,

emotional,
and dramatic?

Always fun when we have celebs

We've only scratched
the surface

on what just might be
the most talked‐about season

in "Bachelorette" history,

but Kaitlyn's journey
wasn't all just talk.

Early on, the dates were fun,
physical,

and pretty wild.

Kaitlyn was happy
and love was starting

to hit her hard

but not as hard as other things

were hitting these men.

Ben and Kaitlyn's connection
was so strong,

I honestly thought Ben
might be the one.

Although things didn't work out
for him there,

Ben did go on to become one

of our most beloved
Bachelors ever,

and he's a dear friend,

and he joins us now
from his house.

Ben, how you doing?

‐ I mean, I'm fan‐‐fantastic.

Absolutely fantastic.

‐ We were just watching
the sex ed date.

So hilarious.
We had the child actors.

What was that like
for you guys?

Was it funny, or was it
just terrifying?

‐ Terrifying.

And for me‐‐so I don't‐‐

a lot of people
don't know this.

For a long time,

I was actually a sex ed minor
in college.

I was really interested
in teaching sex ed

in my youth group back home,

so this date trying
to talk about life

and the truths of life
came naturally,

but it made me nervous;
you know, I'm gonna do this

on national television.

‐ That's amazing!
How did I not know this?

‐ Yeah.

‐ What do you remember
about being on the show,

not‐‐you know,
not as the Bachelor

but being on
"The Bachelorette"?

What do you still remember?

‐ I mean, a lot of it.

It‐‐it changed‐‐it changed
the course of my life

to lead me to a place where
I finally could admit openly

for the first time
some sort of vulnerability,

which was, "Hey,
I feel a little bit unlovable

or a lot unlovable,"

and I have to say this.

After I got let go
from the show,

I had a lot of love
and respect for Kaitlyn,

and I was sitting, uh,
at a bar there in Ireland.

You pulled up next to me
and you said,

"Well, what are
you gonna do now?"

And I said, "Well,
I'm just gonna go back

to being what I did before."

And the thing I've always
stuck with‐‐and I've said it‐‐

and anytime somebody
asks me the best thing

I've taken away from the show
is, you looked at me

and you said,

"Use this whole thing
to enhance your life,

not change it completely."
‐ Yep.

‐ And‐‐and that's been a motto
in my life ever since then.

So those are the things
that really stand out to me.

‐ Um, you know who our
new Bachelorette is.

You know it's Clare.

What's your advice to her

as she's about
to start her journey,

hopefully someday soon?

‐ I think my only advice
is, don't do yourself

the injustice
of not being yourself.

What I'm looking forward
to the most is,

I know every person that's
gonna walk out of that limo,

and Clare especially is really
looking to make this work,

and I can't wait to watch
that again after so long

of the delay here due
to some‐‐you know, COVID‐‐

is to watch somebody really
attempt to fall in love.

I think for that reason alone,

And I don't know why
that's their first question

because sometimes I feel like
the Bachelors

aren't put in that position.

They don't get asked what
happens in the Fantasy Suite.

And I still commend Kaitlyn
that she stood her ground

and the fact that she knew
she was attracted to a man

as a grown woman
and made a decision

to explore that.
‐ Absolutely. I commend her.

People are gonna say
and have their opinions on it,

but she is a woman
that follows her heart,

and I have nothing
but pure love for people

who follow their passion,

follow their heart,
and lead with that,

where it's Hannah or Kaitlyn
or whoever.

These are the type of women

How well did you know Kaitlyn

before you came back
on the show?

‐ Um...well, we had never
met in person.

‐ Okay.
‐ So...

we‐‐we talked‐‐

like, you know, listen.

Bachelor Nation

has a very unique experience,

and the people
who go through it,

they connect
and share experiences,

and‐‐and that's
how Kaitlyn and I,

um, reached out,

uh, and started just chatting.

It's one of those things that
kind of escalated quickly.

You start talking,
you FaceTime,

and we‐‐we talked,
uh, every day

for a period of time,

and then she was asked
to be the Bachelorette,

but that was such
a unique season because they‐‐

you guys had
two Bachelorettes.

I remember telling Kaitlyn
a few times,

"If I'm being totally honest,
I hope they pick Britt."

‐ Kaitlyn and Britt
went on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

‐ Yeah, yeah.

‐ Kaitlyn gave you a sign.

‐ She‐‐yeah, she's like,
"I'm about to go onstage.

I'm gonna‐‐I'm going to kiss
my fingers, and just know"‐‐

like, and so, again,
this was a fun love affair.

It was‐‐for me at the time,

I'm like, "Here I am watching
'Jimmy Kimmel,'

and‐‐and Kaitlyn is, you know,
throwing me signals."

‐ She says, "I'm going to put
both my fingers to my lips

"and‐‐and give you a sign

"that basically
I'm thinking of you.

This is for you."

And let's‐‐we're
taking a look at it now.

This is the moment right here.

‐ Not that I'm wishing
any controversy,

but, boy,
would that be something else.

‐ Mm‐hmm.

How's it gonna work?

Do you know the guys

This was a little shout‐out
to Nick.

‐ Uh, you hadn't seen
each other.

You hadn't spent time together,

but you started talking,
and you were writing.

These are the infamous
love letters.

‐ Yeah, they're‐‐

they're emails,
you know, they're emails.

I had told her

that I was going to email her

while she was filming
the show.

So I just wrote her
a bunch of emails

with no anticipation
of coming on.

‐ 'Cause I read them,
and these are

passionate, romantic
love letters

that you emailed to Kaitlyn
as she became the Bachelorette

and‐‐and literally
started her season.

‐ What's interesting
about them is,

when we were filming,

I think it was, uh, you know,
during the Fantasy Suite‐‐

'cause, yeah, at this time,
I'm thinking,

"She's gonna pick me."

You know, ha‐ha‐ha.

And I had mentioned,
I'm like,

"Hey, I wrote you
a bunch of emails

"that when you kind of
get back on the grid,

you're gonna get."

Obviously she ended up
getting engaged to Shawn,

and so I just forgot
about them.

I never read them,
I never looked at them,

and, um, you know,
not too long ago,

Kaitlyn and I, you know,
went on each other's podcasts,

and she has said,
"You know, I never‐‐

I never got those letters."

I'm like,
"Oh, well, I sent them."

So that‐‐her bringing them up
made me think,

"Oh, well, I wonder
if I have them."

Like, "I wonder if I have them
in my sent emails."

And sure enough, they were
there, and I read them,

and they were sweet,
and it reminded me

of why I came and what
I thought about Kaitlyn then,

and I will say,
I'm glad I found them,

just because it did‐‐
especially at this point,

they are definitely nothing
but good memories.

‐ You know what's interesting
is, I've gotten to know you

over the years,
we've become friends,

and now I think back.

I'm like,
"Was‐‐was he a villain?"

Like, how is he
this controversial figure?

Because you're not
that guy now.

‐ I was a bit
of a troublemaker.

I'll‐‐I'll own that.

Um, but, uh, it was, uh,

it was certainly sincere.

‐ We just showed
your, uh, breakup,

and I said it's one
of the toughest breakups

to watch in the history
of this show,

and I'm sorry
to say this to you.

But it was hard to watch.

‐ In that moment
when she broke up with me,

I remember wanting
to push her in the pool.

‐ [laughs]

‐ Kaitlyn and I
have joked about this.

Like, listen, I‐‐my feelings
for her were real,

they were sincere,
and I think we're both

grateful she made the choice
that she did.

Uh, I know things didn't
work out with her and Shawn,

but, you know, I don't think

we would've necessarily made
it either as‐‐as a couple,

um, you know, and Kaitlyn‐‐
I mean, heck,

her‐‐her boyfriend now is,
like, the hottest guy ever,

you know, so it all works out,

and it's a positive memory
in my life, for sure.

at all the positives.

‐ Your season became so iconic
for a lot of reasons.

Obviously it started
with two Bachelorettes,

but then there was
the Nick of it all.

That was a big,
controversial moment.

‐ Yeah, it was
very controversial,

and, uh, I mean,

looking back on it now,
I still have no regrets,

because I'll tell you what.

If‐‐if he didn't come on
that season,

uh, I probably would have
thought about him after

because of the relationship
we started before.

‐ Earlier, uh, in the show,

I had, uh,
DeAnna Pappas Stagliano on

and Clare...
‐ Mm‐hmm.

‐ And we were talking about

the moment after the, uh,
one‐on‐one date

and the intimate moment
with Nick.

This was a watershed moment

of not shying away
when it was controversial,

and you really leaned into it.

‐ Uh, I didn't really have
any option

but to lean into it,
because my whole strategy

in‐‐in life is to be myself.

And, you know, it's no secret
I'm not a virgin.

If people are virgins,

they're gonna go about
the season differently.

In my situation,
that's such a, um‐‐

you know, my sexuality

just comes naturally to me
in relationships,

and I didn't want there
to be any shame around it.

Even though,
at the end of the‐‐the show,

I didn't pick that person,
I didn't‐‐

I still didn't want there
to be shame around it,

because that was just part
of how I got to the end of it.

‐ Now the touchy part of this,

because obviously
I know where things stand now.

Uh, but first,
you said good‐bye to Nick...

‐ Mm‐hmm.
‐ And you chose Shawn.

‐ Mm‐hmm.

‐ Talk about
those two decisions.

‐ A big part of why I was
so sure of Shawn at the end

was because I had taken
all the relationships

to the necessary point
I needed to

to understand
how I truly felt,

and I don't know if I've ever
said this out loud,

but the intimate moment
with Nick

was kind of the moment
where I felt wrong

and thought, "Actually,

my feelings for Shawn
are much stronger."

So I'm like,
"Thank God I did that,"

because that's what opened
my eyes and gave me clarity.

‐ You were engaged.

You guys were living together
for quite some time.

‐ Yeah.
‐ It didn't work out.

‐ Mm‐hmm.
‐ Um...

how difficult were those days?

‐ Over‐‐I mean, 3 1/2 years

is a long time...
‐ Yeah.

‐ You know,
to be with somebody,

so I don't consider it like,

really,
a failed relationship.

We tried really hard, and, um,
and the end of the day,

it felt like it just
started off on the wrong foot,

and we couldn't get past
certain things,

and when it comes to thinking
about your forever,

it's‐‐you have to, um,
either move past that

or‐‐or break up,

and that's kind of where
the crossroads came to.

‐ The good news, Kaitlyn:
it all ends well.

You have found love,
and you found love

with, uh, one of our favorites
from the "Bachelor" family.

Jason Tartick and you
are madly in love and together,

and so let's‐‐
let's bring him in.

‐ [laughs]

Who would've thought?

‐ Who would've thought?

‐ Uh, I didn't.

Even watching him
on my television,

I wouldn't have thought.

I was like, "Man, that guy
needs to be the Bachelor."

‐ Uh, for those
that don't know,

Jason, of course, uh,
we know and love

from Becca's season
of "The Bachelorette."

How did you guys meet?
How did this happen?

‐ [laughs] I'll tell you,
it was not planned.

Jason came on the podcast,

and I didn't actually realize

how ins‐‐instantaneous
the‐‐the connection was.

It was people
that listened to the podcast

who‐‐they were like, you know,

"We haven't seen Kaitlyn
and Shawn post in a while."

Um, "But did you hear
the chemistry

between Kaitlyn and Jason
on her podcast?"

‐ I was crushing
pretty quickly, actually.

So I had left the podcast,
funny enough,

and I turned the corner,
called my best buddy,

and he says to me, uh,
"So how'd it go?

I know you were excited
for it," and I go,

"Yep, just met my future
wife," you know?

And I was‐‐I was kind of
joking around, but...

‐ No, you weren't.
‐ The banter‐‐

I was like, "Yeah, you know."
‐ Ahh, ah!

And then we kind of just
started talking as friends,

and I friend‐zoned him hard
for a long time, and...

‐ Oh, yeah.

[laughter]
‐ And‐‐and he pushed through.

‐ J, have you ever watched
Kaitlyn's season

of "The Bachelorette"?

‐ I have never watched
Kaitlyn's season.

No, I haven't.

‐ And that's why we're
still happily together.

[laughter]

‐ Well, luckily

we put it into this nice,
bite‐sized show

we're doing tonight,
so you can just watch this.

‐ You know,
what's interesting is, like,

without this experience‐‐
without this franchise,

without any of this‐‐
we wouldn't be here.

We wouldn't live
in the same house.

that we rescued.
