I'm 11 years old, and I'm a dancer.

Growing up, I was a military brat.

My mom was in the Navy, so we had to move so much.

When you move, you have to start over

and just make new friends, start a whole new life.

And it's not that easy.

[woman chuckling]

There has been one thing that actually has helped it,

and it's dance.

‐ Definitely super proud of you.

This is major.

‐ When I dance, it just makes me feel happy.

It feels like I have superpowers, literally.

Like, I feel like I could...

I'm performing in front of judges

that I've been watching for years,

so I do feel a tad bit nervous.

the level of how proud I am.

I'm 11, and I will be dancing today.

‐ How long have you been dancing?

‐ Four to five years.

These kids, they were battling at recess

when I was in first grade,

and they wouldn't let me get in 'cause I sucked.

‐ At dance? ‐ Yeah. They‐‐they sucked.

Or I sucked to them.

Today was going so well.

‐ We're all from different neighborhoods

of New York City.

Where we grew up at was really rough.

People don't even make it past 25.

‐ I'm just going to go buy Oreos or something

from the store, and there's just a shoot‐out,

or somebody's getting sliced across the face

or something like that.

‐ Wrong place, wrong time.

‐ So we would put ourselves

into the most safe environment, which was these dance centers.

We would just spend all our time there,

and then we would take all these moves we have

and bring 'em to the train for money.

‐ We started dancing on the subway full‐time.

‐ It went from making a few dollars

to actually us helping Mom pay the bills.

‐ Yeah. ‐ The train was a blessing.

It literally saved our lives

because we don't have to be back where we live.

Bullets don't have names, nor do they have directions.

They will hit anybody that's in the way.

Like, recently, I lost a friend.

‐ He was a part of our team,

and, like, he was walking with another friend,

and a guy pulled up to him in a car like,

"Yo, are you guys in the such‐and‐such gang?"

He was like, "Nah, nah."

And then out of nowhere,

the guy just started shooting at him.

And so he got shot.

‐ I wish I could've said good‐bye at least.

It hurt me to see somebody so young, you know, to die.

And, um... [sniffles]

And the way you learn to deal with it, you know,

you use it to wake up every morning,

'cause they can't, you know?

So you got to do what they wish they could do.

When you dancing, you feel free.

Like, you create what your mind lets you create.

‐ Everybody's been telling us, like,

you guys need to go on "America's Got Talent."

You guys need to go on there! And now, we're here.

‐ Dream big. No dream is too big.

Look where we are. "AGT."

‐ We've known each other for about ten‐plus years.

This is, like, a brotherhood right here, for real.

And what's the plan?

it's 2020, you know, we should never waste any more time.

We're from a city where there's no hope.

There's no influence.

We don't see the right things when we go back home.

But we never gave up on our hopes and dreams.

So we want to give the young people something positive

to look into, you know?

It's about our culture, our city, our family,

our family back home that's watching right now,

and we understand that there's, like,

a million dollars at stake right now.

We already invest in our community

with just as little as our pocket money.

What's your name? ‐ Thank you.

My name's Nolan Neal. ‐ Where do you live, Nolan?

‐ I'm a Nashville native. ‐ Nashville native? Wow.

‐ Born and raised, yeah. ‐ How old are you?

‐ I'm 39. ‐ Are you a musician full‐time?

‐ Yeah, I sing demos as, like, a side job to make money.

‐ So what is the goal?

‐ The reason I took this amazing opportunity

to come here is so I could share

a little bit of my story and what I went through.

When I was 26, everything was happening the way

I thought it was gonna happen, but my dad called me

and told me he was gonna take his life.

[crowd aws]

And so I hung up the phone on him.

I was like, "You can't call your son and say that.

I can help you."

And he's like, "Oh, son, you're never gonna make it."

And the next day I woke up to the news that he had done it.

‐ What? ‐ Oh.

‐ Aw.

‐ Wow. ‐ I'm so sorry.

♪ ♪

‐ My dad, he was a good guy, but he was just unwell.

‐ ♪ And I... ♪

‐ I felt like my dad loved me, but when it happened...

I really felt like I didn't matter that much.

I was like, "Oh, I wasn't important enough for him

to stick around."

I blamed myself, for sure.

‐ ♪ I know nothing at all ♪

‐ There was lots of memories that were good.

I got to jam with him.

There was good times.

My dad played drums, and so I was always with him at shows.

I would get to, like, sound‐check my dad's drums.

So it was cool.

‐ ♪ Would've followed you ♪

‐ I wanted to be like him. [chuckles]

♪ ♪

So I went to Nashville, played on the street on Broadway

and ended up getting a record deal in Los Angeles.

I was like, "This is it."

And I partied really hard.

‐ ♪ And I ♪

♪ Will stumble and fall ♪

‐ It pretty soon started to become unmanageable

because I thought I was a rock star.

I got to New York to record my record,

and we were there, and I just remember

I couldn't sing because I was just so messed up.

♪ ♪

The label decided to drop me.

I went back to Nashville,

and I just kept downward‐spiraling.

That's when it got so bad that people had to step in.

‐ ♪ Will swallow my pride ♪

‐ But I really do believe in fate,

and it means the world to me to have this chance.

♪ ♪

Simon, he knows real talent when he sees it.

So, if I am just kind of a washed‐up singer,

I know he'll tell me.

'Cause I'm glad to be here today,

sober, very clear and focused.

My voice is healthy. I'm healthy.

I haven't touched the hard stuff since.

May 15th will be 10 years.

My name is Christine Hurley.

I'm from Plymouth, Massachusetts.

I'm 55 years old, and I'm a stand‐up comic.

When I was young,

I lived and breathed for "The Carol Burnett Show,"

Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers.

I would, you know, repeat their monologues with my hairbrush.

I just was in awe of these women.

So I always had in the back of my head

that I wanted to get into comedy.

In high school, I met my husband at a house party.

He was a hunk.

When the party was over, he was mopping the floor,

so I thought, "Well, I'm in."

And I haven't picked up a mop since.

So then I turned into the human Pez dispenser

and shot out five babies.

My husband had three jobs,

so I was always able to stay home with the kids,

which was both a blessing and a curse,

because, believe me, I was nuts by the end of the day.

I love and miss you. ‐ We love you.

‐ After they grew up,

I got my first chance doing stand‐up comedy.

I got up onstage. It was unbelievable.

And now, finally, here we are today,

auditioning on "America's Got Talent."

I'm very nervous.

Sometimes you just have to be seen.

I'm from North Carolina, and I am an entertainer.

You know, I really like to make people feel something

with my performance.

Seeing my grandfather do it, you can really move people.

He was a Pentecostal preacher.

Did the snake handling, the faith healing.

People were speaking in tongues,

and he was, you know, jumping up and down,

and everybody was singing with her hands in the air,

and it was a show.

‐ At that point, I knew 100% that this is what I'm doing.

‐ When I was 17, I decide I'm gonna drop out,

move to New York City, and be a street performer.

You know, for a long time, I was really living

that struggling‐artist lifestyle.

It was just me and my case.

I never thought that I could one day be here.

Being here and doing this, this is it.

This is the biggest stage I've ever been on

and will likely ever be on.

It's like a dream.
