Moore: I had followed
some cold cases for years,

and so when I started
working with Parabon,

one of the very first cases
I ever asked them about

was the Angie Dodge murder case.

The night
that Angie was killed,

Angie parked right here
by the boat dock.

This case was
a series of firsts for me ‐‐

the first time a victim's mother
reached out to me directly,

so persistently that
I had to meet her in person...

...the first time
the police let us follow them

as they hunted a killer...

Aw [bleep]
We just lost visual on him.

We're trying to catch him.
Man: Is that him?

...and the first time
it appeared

that genetic genealogy
had led me wrong.

I'm CeCe Moore.

For years,
genealogy was my hobby,

and then it became my career.

Soon, I realized

that the techniques I developed
to reunite families

could also be used
to identify killers.

Now my team and I

help the police hunt
violent criminals.

I'm a new kind of detective.

I'm driving through
some back areas of Idaho Falls.

Not like anything
I've ever seen before.

There are some cows.

I'm on my way
to meet Carol Dodge, finally.

I'm really excited to meet her.

The mother of Angie.

We've been exchanging e‐mails,

but this will be the first time
that we'll ever meet in person.

And I look forward
to learning more about Angie

and what happened.

This horribly sad case.

Reporter:
18‐year‐old Angie Dodge
was raped and murdered

in her Idaho Falls apartment.

Reporter #2: Someone
had raped and killed her.

Reporter #3: Angie Dodge's life
was cut short last night.

[ Police radio chatter ]
Squires:
This call came over the radio.

A body was found,
and suspicious...

"Suspicious death.

I want you to come
and process this crime scene.

Whatever you're doing,
it'll hold."

I'd probably been on patrol
for a couple of months.

It was my first homicide.

Pratt:
They cautioned me that it was

a pretty graphic
and violent scene,

lot of blood.

And then they pointed me
toward the front door.

I took photographs
to show my approach.

[ Camera shutter clicking ]

I get to the top of the stairs,
and I continue to photograph.

I enter
into the largest bedroom,

and that's where
I was able to see the victim.

[ Camera shutter clicks ]

She's laying on the floor,
on her back, next to a mattress.

It's not actually a bed.

Her sweatpants were pulled down
just above knee level.

Her clothes
are kind of disheveled.

She had a shirt on
that was slightly lifted up,

and it was exposing
one of the cut marks

on one of her breasts.

I can see that she has
some extensive lacerations

or stab wounds.

And there is a horrific wound
to the throat.

There was a lot of blood.

There were some blood marks
on the wall.

And then off to my right,

there was a laundry basket
and some stuffed animals.

♪♪

It was probably the worst case
I've ever seen.

♪♪

It's the nightmare.

♪♪

[ Vehicle door closes ]

[ Doorbell rings ]
Hi!

CeCe, CeCe.
Hi.

It's so good
to meet you.

Nice to meet you,
too.

I'm excited to see you.

Really, it's such a pleasure
to meet you.

I can see Angie
in your face.

Sorry.

When you have a child
that's murdered, I...

life just
gets shattered.

Mm‐hmm.

And there's no way
to put the pieces back together.

I wanted to hear
a little bit about Angie,

what you could tell me
about her.

She was my ‐‐
not only my baby,

but she was
my only daughter.

She really went through
some hard times

when she was younger
because she was big for her age.

Yeah, was she 5'11"?
Or 6 foot?

Mm‐hmm, mm‐hmm.

And so she was bullied,

and so when she would see
other people being bullied

or being messed with,

she would get right
in the person's face

and say,
"You leave him alone."

♪♪

Okay, we're gonna
turn right here, left.

Man,
this is beautiful.

Look at the light.

I grew up out here.
You did?

So you're a native.
Yes.

My mom and dad
were really poor,

and my mother raised five girls
with no bathroom.

What?!
We had an outhouse.

Oh, my.

[ Both laugh ]

So, is this her block?
Where she lived?

Yes. Mm‐hmm.
Okay.

Pratt: It's an older
neighborhood in Idaho Falls.

It had...seen better days.

Here, this was, you know,
the backyard,

and there was
a chain‐link fence.

Clark: Angie moved into
a converted apartment

that was the second floor
of a house.

And that's where she was
the night she was killed.

♪♪

Angie was at my house
that night

until 20 minutes
after 10:00

because she moved out
three weeks before.

Only three weeks before?
And one of
the reasons why ‐‐

because she disobeyed
a house rule.

And I was so grateful
that she had come over

'cause I hadn't seen her
for three weeks.

Oh, that was
the first time ‐‐
That was the first time ‐‐

Since she moved out?
[ Voice breaking ] Yes.

Oh.

And the night
that she came over,

I rocked her
and I says,

"I'm just so glad
you're not mad at me anymore."

And she just looked up,
she said,

"Not even
in a blue moon."

And...next day,

that's when they told me
that Angie had been found dead.

The police gathered DNA
at the crime scene.

♪♪

The semen that we could see
clearly all over the victim.

Skin cells
under her fingernails.

Pratt: We found one hair
that was obviously different.

We believe it was a pubic hair.

Some blood sampling, obviously.

The killer absolutely left
his calling card there.

Jack:
This was my only daughter,

and I hope you come forward
and make it easy on everyone.

Squires:
Almost every person that they
brought in for an interview,

they asked them for DNA.

We're interviewing
all family members,

associates, friends of hers.

Up to now,

we have collected
over 100 different DNA samples.

There wasn't any matches.

They spent months
trying to solve this case,

and they're getting nowhere.

And then a friend of hers
named Benjamin Hobbs

was arrested in Nevada for
raping a woman at knifepoint.

Much like
the similar circumstances

that had happened
in Angie's murder.

They began talking to a large
number of Ben Hobbs' friends...

...including a guy
named Chris Tapp.

Slowly over the course
of these interrogations,

he winds up saying
that he was assisting...

...and that he slashed
Angie's breast.

And then the DNA results
come back.

Neither Tapp nor Hobbs'
DNA profile

matched the CODIS profile.

♪♪

But Chris Tapp
has confessed to the crime.

So, in February of 1997,
Chris Tapp was charged

with the rape and murder
of Angie Dodge.

Guilty.

[ Spectators murmuring ]

The judge ultimately opted
against the death penalty.

They gave him 30 years to life.

But it was clear

that somebody else must have
been involved in the murder.

♪♪

We still needed to find
that other person.

But nothing happened.
Nothing came up.

No evidence came forward.

Moore:
Carol Dodge is not happy

that her daughter's killer
has not been identified.

♪♪

So she decides she needs
to investigate it herself.

Carol:
I literally went to the streets.

I kept going back and forth.

I'd go home 3:00, 4:00,
5:00 in the morning.

I kept reading
all of the documents

and the different reports
that I had accumulated.

Moore:
The turning point comes

when she decides
that she's going to get

Chris Tapp's
interrogation tapes.

And she starts watching
hours upon hours,

looking for any clues
she can possibly find...

...to track down
this mystery man

that left the DNA at the scene
of her daughter's murder.

♪♪

And over time, she realizes that

he really doesn't know much
about the crime.

She comes to the conclusion
eventually

that the detectives appear
to be feeding him information

about what happened that night.

Carol:
For 13 years, I believed

that Chris Tapp was
part of my daughter's killing.

So it took me
a long time

after doing all the
investigation about Chris Tapp

to say
Chris Tapp's not there.

Moore:
So, in a major turn of events,

Carol goes from wanting
the death penalty for Chris Tapp

to believing
he should be exonerated.

She becomes sort of an activist

for the man
she thought killed her daughter.

[ Applause ]

Finally, in 2017, the prosecutor
decides to make a deal.

After 20 years in prison,
Chris Tapp is free.

‐Victory!
‐Victory!

Moore: But he has
this murder conviction

hanging over his head.

The prosecutor refused
to expunge that from his record.

And for the person
who did kill Angie Dodge,

there's a bounty on your head.

Squires:
As the years go by,

it never stopped
being investigated.

Around October of '17,
I took over the case.

We were still trying to search
for whoever this person was.

But we have taken
every street to the end,

and there's nothing else
to follow up on.

Moore:
Poor Carol had been trying

to find her daughter's killer
for 22 years.

There is one person
that killed my daughter.

That's what
the DNA shows.

So Carol is not
going to give up,

and I want
to be the one to help her.

[ Voice breaking ]
I just want to know.

And I just know
she was so scared.

I'm gonna
give you a hug.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry
I keep making you cry.

That's not
what I mean to do.

I'm gonna do
everything I can

to help
give you some answers.

I just hope that I live
long enough to see the day.

So we got to get busy.

Yeah, right?
[ Laughs ]

Alright, we're gonna talk about
the murder of Angie Dodge.

Tom, have you been in touch
with the department

about getting evidence?

Yeah, so,
there is evidence.

They did say
there's degradation.

The 61%.

Yeah, that's ‐‐
[ Sighs ]

Working with DNA is like trying
to put a puzzle together.

Say you have 100 pieces
in your puzzle.

This was missing
39 of those pieces.

Right at the margin
for what we would accept.

We have a number system
that we use,

and this case was a 4‐minus.

That's like a D‐minus
in a grading system.

Moore: Genetic genealogy
had never been done

on crime‐scene DNA
of this degraded quality.

But CeCe is very tenacious.

Carol, Angie's mom,
writes to me almost every day.

It'd be wonderful if
we could help her gain
justice on this case.

So we uploaded it
to GEDMatch.

And at that point,
I hand it off to CeCe.

Moore: No cold‐case perpetrator
had been identified

using such degraded DNA ‐‐ ever.

But I wanted to give this a try.

I found two matches who not only
shared DNA with the suspect,

but shared DNA with each other.

Genetic network #1.

The top match was only
about 107 centimorgans.

This might be
a second cousin once removed

or a third cousin‐ish
with the suspect.

But because we're missing
all of that DNA,

I really couldn't predict what
those relationships would be.

So I had to dig deeper
into that match list.

I had three matches.

57 centimorgans...

32 centimorgans...

26.6.

It looked like fourth, maybe
fifth cousins and beyond ‐‐

people who shared DNA
with the suspect

but did not share DNA
with that first genetic network.

My genetic network #2.

They should have common
ancestors with the suspect

somewhere in their family trees,
but because of the degraded DNA,

I just didn't know how far back
the connection was going to be.

But I like building
family trees,

so that was not a problem.

I'm using census records,
death records, marriage records,

all the traditional
genealogical resources.

And for genetic network #1,

we're going back
to second great‐grandparents.

Their common ancestors
with the suspect

are Joseph Lathrom
and Orlena Gaither.

And I may not be
pronouncing those right.

Best I can do.

Joseph also went by
the name Josephus.

He was born 1856.

Orlena was born 1875
in Missouri.

In one of the census records,
he is a cashier.

Orlena, of course,
is a housewife.

There was a tornado in 1880,
a flood in 1885,

and another tornado in 1888.

Maybe that's why he decided
to become a cashier ‐‐

because he wanted to get inside
from out in that weather.

Do we have
the air conditioner on?

[ Imitates choking ]
It's so hot!

Lennart,
I'm so hot.

When I'm hot, I am just not ‐‐
especially recently.

I'm like
one year‐long hot flash.

Right?

[ Chuckles ]

And for Genetic Network #2,
their common ancestors are

Martin Van Buren Ussery
and Sarah Adeline Morrison ‐‐

also second great‐grandparents.

They were both born 1844,
also in Missouri.

Now, Martin Van Buren,
that sounds familiar, right?

Our eighth president.

So, clearly,
his parents were big fans.

Martin served on the Union side
in the Civil War.

Fortunately,
he wasn't gone very long,

because they still were able
to have 12 children.

I'd say
they liked each other a lot.

[ Laughter ]

12 children was good for them.

Not so good for me

'cause I need
to follow those children

forward in time
to try to find the suspect.

Who are the descendants of
each of these common ancestors?

Where did they come together?

After hours and hours and hours
of tree building,

it leads to this one marriage ‐‐
Clarence and Cleo Ussery.

Ah.

The suspect has to be
a descendant of this couple

'cause we need
that ancestral mix.

They got married
in December 1916.

We have to build forward, try to
find somebody of the right age,

of course the right gender,

and hopefully
somewhere near Idaho Falls

that could be our suspect.

Fortunately, this family has
really good obituaries.

However,
because of the degraded DNA,

I'm not sure
if it's one of their grandsons

or their great‐grandsons,

but they have
six male descendants

over two generations
that could be Angie's killer.

Five of the six males lived
over 1,000 miles away.

But one of them lived in Idaho.

He was the only one who came
anywhere near Idaho Falls.

But I communicated
all six of these names

back to the Idaho Falls
Police Department.

As you know,
we took the crime‐scene DNA,

and I was able
to narrow it down

to six possible suspects
for you.

Now, many of my cases,

I can provide one name
or two brothers,

but I'd say six is ‐‐

Squires:
Pretty good.

Pretty good.
‐Six is pretty good.

Can I ask you something?
Yeah. Please do.

How would you get
that familial information

for the descendants?

That's a great question.
Just genealogical information?

I was able to find obituaries
for this family.

It was not only
the first big lead,

but really,
just about the only lead.

Now, this fifth son
is most interesting to me

because they moved
to Idaho.

Wow.

Even though
it wasn't Idaho Falls,

it was a lot closer
than everybody else was.

That's great.

See? You are a detective.
See? You are a detective.

It was incredible.
It was incredible.

She was the key
to making it happen.

That just puts the onus for us
to do our job.

We're not just going off of
the information we get from you.

We're going to have to do
the rest of the investigation

to determine that that person
was actually involved.

Moore: So that means
you all have a job to do.

[ Laughter ]

You always have a job to do,
but you really have a job to do.

Okay, I'm back to eyes
on the trooper.

Man: Aw [bleep]
We just lost visual on him.

We're trying to catch him.
Is that him right there?

And you guys are gonna
have to work for this one.

Sage: I think everybody knows
why we're here.

We're gonna try
to get a DNA sample

from a possible contributor
that Cece has identified

of our unknown DNA found
at the Angie Dodge homicide.

He lives in the area,
he has the right surname,

the right, I guess,
autosomal DNA.

[ Chuckling ] That's very good.
Very good.

[ Laughter ]

Everybody's just like, "Whoa!"
Sorry, buddy.

I hate you guys.

[ Laughter ]

So, one thing
that's beneficial for us

is he's got two sons who will
share a lot of his same DNA,

and according to CeCe, even if
we can get a sample from them,

that'll help us to narrow down
who our likely suspect is ‐‐

if it's a cousin, an uncle,

or if it's in a different line
of their family tree.

I mean,
this is the first step

in what's gonna eventually
help us catch this guy.

I know ‐‐
it's the kind of thing

that's been giving me
goose bumps for months,

and I'm excited about it,
so I hope you guys all are, too.

Get some gloves, get some swabs,
get some evidence bags.

Man:
Good job, Sage!

Autosomal.

Autosomal,
autosomal, autosomal!

The person
that CeCe had identified

lives about 2 1/2 hours away
from where we are.

Moore: This potential
person of interest

was a family man,
living out in a rural area.

He didn't seem like
the type of person

that would do something
like this,

but I've learned in my work
you can't always tell

who is capable of such violence.

Genetic genealogy is a
lead generator, and that's all.

Any information that
I am providing to the detectives

is simply a tip.

So, we're just gonna, hopefully,
find some piece of DNA

that he discards,

whether blowing his nose,
drinking a soda.

Moore: They have to build
that traditional case

and collect that DNA sample

to compare
to their crime‐scene DNA.

Spencer: There could be
DNA here that...

Squires:
We had made contact with

their local investigators
in that area.

And we put a plan together

between six and eight
of our own detectives.

Was mainly farm country.

Mulden: Doesn't look like
there's a really good spot

to actually
watch the house itself.

We're gonna have
to find out something ‐‐

Hey, Bill, I'm gonna take
a parallel road.

Squires: And so, to have
surveillance vehicles around

just stuck out
like a sore thumb.

♪♪

The first day ‐‐

and it was a long day,
a 12‐ or 14‐hour day...

[ Engine starts ]

...and we weren't able
to actually get a sample.

If we can get
the father's sample,

that would be fantastic,

but if it's too difficult,
perhaps we can get the son.

♪♪

We split half of the team
on the son

and half of the team
on the father just in case

'cause we didn't want
to miss an opportunity.

Mulden:
This is the target vehicle.

We'll keep an eye on him.

Hey, John, we just got back
into the parking lot.

We actually have good eyes
on the car.

His son...

Man: Copy this.
We got eyes on him.

...ended up going into
a local bank there.

♪♪

So, the farmer blow
is right there.

He came
out of the bank

and spit a couple of wads
of chew here on the ground.

You got it.

We continued
to surveil the father.

Man: Stay with him
as best you can.

Tisdale:
I love my wife, but you are now
a close second, sir.

He did all the dirty work.

Oh, my gosh.

So, I'm really excited

that they've been successful
in getting this DNA.

I was still on pins and needles

waiting for those results
to come in.

The genetic genealogy had led
to just these six cousins.

But when the results
came back...

it seemed to eliminate
all of them.

It was a total shock.

I just...

I just couldn't figure out
what had gone wrong.

♪♪

Squires:
I really thought that we might
be at a dead end right there.

So it was really depressing.

Moore: Never before
had genetic genealogy

given me the wrong answer.

And I think the thing
that I was most afraid of

was failing Carol

and having to tell her
that I couldn't identify him.

So, my tree that I like to
sit in and read was just there.

Back there?
Yep.

Moore: It's very hard for me
to step away from a case,

but I really was
kind of at a dead end.

I didn't know what else to do.

There were times
where I was very doubtful

we would be able
to do anything with this.

It was incredibly discouraging.

But it was nice
to come back home.

See, that was
my parents' room right there.

In the past, I was definitely

not thinking about murders
or rapes,

but ever since I started
working with law enforcement,

I'm faced with incredible evil.

And once you meet the family,

I think it's impossible to deny
how much these cases mean.

Like the Dodge case,
I think a lot about

what it would have been like to
have something like that happen

here in Westwood,
Rancho Bernardo.

Everything would have changed.

By chance, my high school
recently created a hall of fame

and decided to induct me
as one of the first people.

My work with genetic genealogy

was absolutely
borne of a passion.

It was never intended
to be a career.

Okay, this is great.

I didn't find this
until I was in my 40s.

So many of us women feel like

we're kind of forgotten
at that point.

Being able to return...

...to receive this award
really validated

that I had made
the right choices after all,

because I really
believe strongly

that a big part of my success
is the unwillingness to give up.

So I decided that

even when the odds
looked to be stacked against me,

I was not going to give up.

I could not fail Carol.

Carol demanded answers,
deserved answers,

and I knew I had to find a way
to get them for her.

I had to figure out
what had gone wrong.

Because it had to be
a descendant

of Clarence and Cleo Ussery.

Now, because of
my unknown parentage work,

I'm always aware
that there's a possibility

there's someone
that just doesn't show up

in the written records.

Was there a missing descendant

that was hidden
in the tree somehow?

I harkened back
to my earlier research

where one of the grandsons
had an early marriage.

He was really young,
his wife even younger.

She was 16.

And I was really surprised

not to find any children
from that marriage

'cause most people
don't get married that young

for no reason.

The problem was, there had
also been an early divorce.

I just couldn't find her.

Clearly, she had remarried,
'cause she just disappeared.

So I decided
to look at her parents,

and my hope was that her mother
would have an obituary

that would name the daughter,
and if she had any children,

that they might be mentioned,
as well.

But not everything is digitized.

And so, my right‐hand
genetic genealogist researcher

called the local librarian

in that very small town
in Missouri,

and I got it.

Not only does it name
the daughter,

but it names her son.

He was born
during that early marriage,

but he was carrying
his stepfather's surname.

He was the right age.

And in 1996,
guess where he was living.

Idaho Falls.

Not just Idaho, but Idaho Falls.

That was huge.

I wanted to get this name
to them as quickly as I could.

Hey, everyone.
How are you guys doing?

We're scared.

We're apprehensive about
what we're gonna hear.

So, I guess we can go over it
on my screen.

Squires:
She begins to lay out

all of the work
that she had done on the report.

And that makes them much less
likely to be the subject.

...they only share...
...centimorgans...

...definitely not
what we expect.

...major problem for us...

Squires:
I'm really expecting bad news.

So we're kind of sitting there
listening to this going,

"When is it coming?"

...and we might never find them.

She just kept us
on the edge of our seat.

It was excruciating.

And...

[ Laughs ]

You're really adding
a lot of drama for us on this.

I'm not adding it.

I'm feeling it.

We've got him. [ Chuckles ]

Are you serious?

I'm serious.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Sniffles ]

Our jaws about dropped.

It was incredible.

Now, we don't take anything
for granted at this point,

and we have to confirm
all this information.

But to have a lead like that
after 23, 24 years,

"huge" is probably
an understatement.

Moore:
His name was Brian Dripps.

Squires:
Brian L. Dripps.

Moore: At the time of the crime,
he was 30 years old.

It was just a few days
before his 31st birthday.

He was going through a divorce.

He had a child being born.

Dripps had only had
some minor issues.

There was a couple
of misdemeanors on his record.

Through our investigation,
we find out

that he actually
was in Idaho Falls at the time.

Moore:
Not just in Idaho Falls,

but right across the street
from her house.

Squires:
It is 0620 in the morning,

and we are in Caldwell, Idaho.

We're gonna go set up on our
person of interest's house here.

We don't know anything
about where he works,

so wherever he goes,

we can tail him and try
to figure out what he does.

He's at the end of this street
on our left.

♪♪

I just did the drive by.

That's good news.

♪♪

Alright, so, this is
where his house is.

So, we've got a guy down here
watching this intersection,

we're up here watching this,

and then we've got a guy
down here, north.

Yeah, we're not ‐‐
[ Clears throat ]

I mean, it's something we got to
keep in the back of our mind,

in that, you know,
this is a murder investigation,

so if he gets desperate,

then you never know
what could happen here.

We got to be careful.

He was a concealed weapon
permit holder,

so we didn't want someone
getting shot.

It's just a waiting game now.

We could be sitting here
for 2 minutes up to 12 hours.

♪♪

This is torturous.

♪♪

Just watching one intersection
for one car.

Then you start thinking
to yourself, like,

how often do I leave my house
if it's my day off?

We've been going for
5 1/2, almost 6 hours.

Just waiting.

Cigarette is in hand.

So, our subject is
a couple cars ahead of us.

We've got a UC guy
right behind him.

He's got eyes on him,

and those cigarette butts
are like DNA traps.

They'd be perfect
for collecting a sample.

Squires: The next day, I'm out

This interview went
for about 5 1/2 hours‐ish.

And they told him,

Squires: He still really didn't
want to admit anything

but wanted
to take a smoke break.

Then when he came back in...

Pratt:
He kind of slumps a little bit.

He was silent
for a couple minutes.

And then he just said,
"I did it.

I raped her.

And, apparently, I killed her."

that he had gone over there

with the intention to rape Angie
but not kill her.

We asked him if anyone else
was involved, and he said no.

This was the way

to make this nightmare
finally come to an end.

It was a huge victory for me.
