vowed a comeback from an injury.

decades, the Green Bridge

connecting Muck City to the
rest of Palm Beach County

was a symbol, a legend.

Any visiting high school knew

that once they
crossed that bridge,

they were entering
the lions den.

The notorious realm of
two of the fiercest rivals

in high school football,
Pahokee and Glades Central.

- Once you cross the bridge,
the next stop is Belle Glade.

And just the word Belle
Glade is intimidating.

We in Palm Beach, you hear
Belle Glade, they like ooh!

- [Narrator] But times
have clearly changed

and that ratchets up
the pressure to win.

- We have a saying
in the muckpen,

nothing cross the
Green Bridge beat us.

It meant nobody was
taking nothing from us.

- We're not used to losing to
guys across the Green Bridge,

because on the muck,
it was always about

us beating each other,

and we used to just tear
everything up across the bridge.

- We built a legacy.

We were respected
around the county.

Teams were hesitant about even
putting us on their schedule.

- Let's just say the competition
is behind to Pahokee.

That's just how it is.

- [Narrator] For
the past few years,

teachers and administrators
at Pahokee High

have been on a crusade to
elevate academic achievement

to a level that ri
the school's performance

on the football field, by
strengthening programs in

math and science, and
introducing cool new activities,

like a robotics club.

So when it came time to
hire a new football coach,

Principal Dwayne Dennard
needed someone who supported

his vision for the
school, a special vision,

shared by native son DJ Boldin.

- Come to work early
to get a head start.

- When I hired, it was
Boldin, based on my vision

for all the students.

He came in, he did a
really good interview,

detail interview of the vision
that I want for my students.

- [Narrator] In addition to
heading up the football team,

Coach Boldin pulls
double-duty, teaching history

at the adjoining middle school.

- Then and only then
will you flourish.

I do the academic part.

I'm very good at it.

And then I do the football part

and I'm getting
very good at that.

The mindset that I have,
that drove me to success,

but obviously after you
have live life, you realize,

football isn't ething.

It's just an opportunity
for something greater.

- Principal Dennard
always talking about

changing the culture.

As far as everything
around it, like,

he's reforming the school,
he's reforming the players

and the coaches.

He brought us here to
make a change, you know,

to push these athletes.

There's no reason we shouldn't
light up the score board.

- [Narrator] Last week,
Pahokee's new vision

was put to the test
in the beat down

the Blue Devils received at
the hands of Palm Beach Lakes.

- How can we refocus and see
light at the end of the tunnel

so they can stay motivated
and play the game of football?

- This is the first practice
coming back from, you know,

a very horrible loss.

We have been beating Palm
Beach Lakes since '96.

Like, it's been a long time.

- The game last week with
Palm Beach Lakes was like,

basically we beat ourselves.

- When they was
up the first half,

that's all you need to know.

- [Narrator] Principal Dennard
wants the players to know

they stand at a crossroads,
but that they still have

the power to live up to
the expectations set by

the Blue Devil teams that
have come before them.

- Your season is not
lost unless you allow

your season to be lost.

You guys are legendary system.

This is a legend tradition.

What that say up there?

A tradition of
building champions.

When you walk
through this hallway,

that big poster, it
says "Become Legendary."

- Doing the things when
the scouts ain't looking,

doing the little small thing.

That's what I think
being legendary.

- You gotta come
together as a family,

and right now, when I
see y'all out there,

you're not playing as a family.

You're not communicating.

So with that said, I bought

that Coach Boldin and his staff
impart upon their players,

over and over and over.

and part of this football team.

- [Narrator] Like Coach Boldin,
nearly everyone on his staff

is a product of Muck City.

They hold legendary
status and the college

and pro football pedigrees
the young players aspire to.

- Myer, stay tight!

I'm the offensive coordinator.

Graduated from the
University of Miami,

played for the Baltimore Ravens.

Won Superbowl with the
Baltimore Ravens, basically,

I'm the guy that is behind
the offensive madness.

- [Narrator] Coach Berry
brings his experience

as an NFL running
back to calling plays,

but when he was in high
school, Berry was the enemy.

- Yes, I grew up in Belle Glade.

I graduated from Glades Central
actually, the rival school.

- [Narrator] The
jury's still out on

whether or not Pahokee fans
can accept the former Raider

on the Blue Devil
coaching staff.

- Let's go, Seminole.

- [Narrator] The former
pro also set the bar high

when it comes to
player discipline.

One thing we ain't
gonna tolerate this
year is disrespect.

We've spent a lot of
time out here with them,

preparing them for games.

We trying to change the culture
from the principal on down,

he say he want to

on the Pahokee staff

say they sense a tangible
shift in attitude,

between today's players,

and previous generations
of Blue Devils.

- It wasn't that back then.

It was more if your mom say
"be quiet", you be quiet.

You know, if an adult is
talking to you, stop talking,

but now it's like, a lot of
kids, they have a rebuttal,

like they always wanna
state their case.

- [Narrator] But Coach Berry
hopes a good dose of discipline

will help the young athletes
shape up to be better men.

- You know the plays,
that why you doing this?

- And I was talking back.

- [Narrator] The back talk
at practice, coupled with

the Blue Devils' poor
offensive showing this season

have put Coach Berry,
the Glades Central grad,

on the hot seat in Pahokee.

In times like these, Coach
Berry relies on his faith

to help him stay on course.

- I'm a firm believer of
faith, family, football.

And if you have
your faith in God,

nothing else really
matters, you know,

'cause He's gonna
take care of you.

- [Narrator] Berry also relies
on the council of another

Muck City legend, his
father, Bishop Kenny Berry.

Kenny was a star
cornerback for Pahokee,

which earned him a
scholarship to the

University of Miami
and a stint in the NFL.

Now, Bishop Berry ministers
to his congregation

at Grace Fellowship in
the heart of Muck City,

blending his love
of faith and family

with his passion for football.

- A coach himself has to keep
himself, what, motivated.

Just as God has given us plays.

And basically what
you're trying to do,

just like a football team,

is trying to get the
kids to carry out a play.

Our family, we try to get
them to carry out a play.

- To understand that
lessons are learned,

and football is
one of those games

where you've got to
have collaborative skill

in being able to cooperate
one with another.

We're a small rural community.

You go down to Pahokee
and there's not even

a Burger King or McDonald's
or a Wendy's or Checkers.

People need to see
the disadvantage that
these communities,

you know, have compared
to other communities,

while still being able to
go out and be productive,

and still putting
guys in the NFL,

you know, sending
guys off to college.

- I remember I got my first
offer, and it was just like,

whew,

'cause when you playin', you
know, you kinda scared that,

well, maybe I'm not good enough,

and when that first one came
in, I had tears in my eyes

because, I don't care if
no other ones come in,

we got this one.

- Every player a college
takes is an investment,

both of coaching time
and scholarship money.

They don't want to waste a
scholarship spot on a player

who's gonna flame out.

They check with teachers,
principals, coaches.

They want to make sure that
the player that they're taking

as a scholarship player is
a player who's gonna succeed

in their team,
and at the school.

- [Narrator] One of
Pahokee's most promising

division one prospects
is Delonus Kabir,

who goes by the
nickname "Scooter."

He's a massive two-way
tackle with great speed,

but when he was born, Scooter
weighed just a few pounds,

and was small enough
to fit into the palm

of his mother's hand.

- If I tell people I
was emature baby,

and how small I was, they
won't believe it cause like,

I'm real big now.

- Scooter, he's a big
mild-mannered kid.

He's a nice kid, you're not
gonna find a nicer young man.

- Scooter was like your
typical church boy.

He goes to church.

He plays in the
band at the school,

but if you've ever seen Scooter,

he's what, 6'4",
6'5", 330 pound kid,

beating the drums, like
no, we need a lineman.

- [Narrator] But for Scooter,
football is often times

a blessing and a curse.

- I'm always doing something
dealing with football, like,

I miss out on, like, fun
stuff that the family doing,

'cause I have to do
football practicing.

- Everyone's just pushing
him to play football

because of his size,
like he had great size,

and football is not
Scooter's first love,

but it's something
that he grew to love.

He's seeing an
outlet through this.

He has an opportunity
to go to college

and have his school paid
for by playing a game

that he's fallen in love with.

- This came from NC State.

It just tells me that they
want to see me this summer,

getting me up this summer.

And then, this one
is from Wake Forest.

They're telling me that
I'm pretty good player.

I play the game the way my
position should be played,

and stuff.

That's from the
coach, he was like,

he can't wait to
meet me personally.

This is from the University
of Central Florida,

so you've got my jersey number.

This was just saying that they
enjoyed having me up for camp

and hope I had a good
time at the school.

This just a few, the rest
are in my room on the wall.

- [Narrator] With all this
attention, comes anticipation

that Scooter will soon
make the biggest decision

of his life so far, where
to play college ball.

It's a decision with
life-changing consequences.

Because Muck City
produces so many

college football prospects,
it's now home to a

unique organization dedicated
to securing scholarships

for that area's
stand-out players,
another step on the road

to turning today's students
into tomorrow's legends.

- So today we're in Belle Glade.

It's a grand opening of
the Student ACES Center,

which we call the SAC.

(cheering)

A center where the young
men and women in our program

congregate, come to this
facility, be able to learn

life skills, be able to
really position themselves

for the future success.

- Today will mark the
beginning of a childhood dream,

and it is through this
program and this building that

not only the student
athletes in the Glades area,

but the youth in this
community, will be equipped with

knowledge and the resources
needed to reach their dreams.

(clapping)

- [Narrator] KD Fletcher
is a former scholar athlete

from Glades Central, who
is now paving the way

for today's high achievers
to maximize their potential,

and sort through their
scholarship offers.

- She's like a mentor.

She really wanna help
these guys out and

ale wants to see is
see them be successful.

- Hello.

I never told them, ever,
where I want them to go

or where I think they fit.

I let them make that
decision for themselves.

- KD could be considered

their mom agent, and when
I'm saying mom agent,

she's gonna tell them exactly
what they're doing wrong

and put them in their place
right there on the spot,

and ain't gonna sugarcoat
it, but at the same time,

she's built that rapport with
them, or that relationship

to say listen, you know
this is what we have to do

in order to get you
to this next level.

- This center is the first
of its kind, in actually

the entire US, so this
building is gonna be

one of those things that
teach them, not just football,

but every other sport,
just what do they need,

the requirements that are
needed for them to be recruited

by a Division One school,
and go on to the next level.

We know that every kid is
not gonna be a NFL player.

We understand that, but
we're also gonna prepare them

for life after
athletics and be able to

grasp those opportunities.

- [Narrator] This week,
Pahokee's Coach Boldin

knows the entire
community expects him

to field a team that is
focused and prepared to win.

- Ooh.

- [Narrator] But focus
has been hard to come by

for transfer quarterback
Mack Williams,

who is not only trying
to cope with being

the starting QB for
his former archrival.

He also just learned
before his poor performance

at Palm Beach Lakes that
his father Mack Sr.,

an ex-con, known in the
Muck as "Littlemack,"

had just been arrested, again.

- The day I see him it was
uptown, like, he had told me,

like, the police came over and
try to get somebody, he left,

and the next day they had
told me he was in jail,

'cause he kinda feel like he
was in the middle of something,

like drugs or something.

I can't put it to my town
to stay out the streets,

like that's his life he chose.

- [Narrator] But it wasn't
just Mack who struggled

to stay focused at
Pahokee's last game.

With the teams next
challenge only days away,

Coach Boldin and company
are growing impatient

with the lack of effort
and the surplus of

idle chatter during practice.

- Where you supposed to be?

Boldin battles to impose order

and discipline on
the Pahokee players,

Glades Central must focus
on it's long time foe,

Cocoa High School, the team
that has beaten the Raiders

twice in the state
championship game.

For seniors like Jermaine
Mays, taking down Cocoa

would be a historic
accomplishment,

and possibly attract the
attention from college scouts.

All the more reason
Jermaine is anxious

for his recent knee
injury to heal.

But a lack of financial
resources to pay
for his treatment,

and a fear of missing
the rest of the season,

have Jermaine unsure
of what to do,

which leads him
to the SAC offices

and his new guardian
angel, KD Fletcher.

- Sup man, pull up your
pants, I always gotta tell you

ahead to next year

and everything, besides
football, that's
important to him.

- If I didn't have football,
I'd probably be more into

like the nerdy types
of books and like chess

and stuff like that.

I'm not one of those guys
that's like, oh, my dream

is to go to the NFL.

- [Narrator] Instead, Scooter
will choose where he wants

to play college ball based
on academics, not athletics.

- I just wanna major
in criminal justice and

wherever life takes
me with that degree,

then I'll just follow it.

Really, I could be a
judge or a lawyer, too.

I feel like, if I do that, like,

I can make a difference
in my community.

A lot of times, in
this community, like,
African Americans,

they feel like the police
are out to get them,

you know what I mean?

I feel like I could
be one of the ones

that could change that.

- [Narrator] Tuesday afternoon.

It's three days until
Glades Central kicks off

against rival Cocoa.

At the urging of KD Fletcher,
Jermaine Mays has decided

to get his knee
examined with the hope

he'll be cleared to play.

- We're going into someone's
ER and getting that knee

checked out because this
has been one of the seasons

where he has had one
of the best seasons

I've ever seen him play.

What's goin' on?

I'm feeling, there's
a lot of pain.

a positive mind

That's the wrong

One thing that
you're gonna find out

about the kids on the Muck,
and in the Glades area,

they don't want to miss

Jermaine is a smart kid.

that type of macho guy, but
Jermaine is a very smart kid.

a senior football player

At Pahokee, offensive
coordinator Damien Berry

knows a win in
Jacksonville will do a lot

to earn him some trust
among Blue Devil fans.

All through the week,
criticism of the Blue Devils

offense has been building
online, and the rumor mill

has been lighting
up with comments

calling Damien's
loyalty into question.

Berry is being attacked.

He's from Glades Central,

and all Mack can do

By the time the team arrives,
news of the blow out loss

is already circulating
through the community,

and eventually makes its way
inside the West County Jail

where one football
parent currently resides,

Littlemack Williams,
father of Mack Williams.

- So there's a couple people
there that work in the jail

that actually are from
Pahokee, so I'm like,

hey man, my son
plays, number 16.

He was supposed to
be the quarterback.

Mack supposed to be the star.

They were like,
no, he got benched.

That's where I beat myself up.

Is it my fault?

If I was there, would
it have been different?

- [Narrator] Coach Boldin
sees a direct connection

between Littlemack's
incarceration and his

son's difficulties on the field.

- It's very important
for a quarterback to have

a clear mind when
there is chaos at home.

The event, his father
going off to jail,

and him and his father had
a very close relationship.

- When I look up in the
stands, he not there,

like, it don't get me mad.

It just have me like
in the feeling, like,

I wish somebody was
there to watch me play.

- A lot of decisions that Mack
made, he just wasn't focused,

and that lack of
focus, I believe,

came from his father
not being present.

- [Narrator] Mack
Williams is a junior,

which means he has the
rest of this season,

and the next year, to
get his game together

and reclaim the starting spot.

For seniors like Scooter Kabir,
looking ahead to next year

means lining up all his
priorities into one,

life-changing decision.

- What goes into it,
obviously I want to

study criminal justice, so,
the type of program they have

at the school, the distance
away from home probably,

my family's availability
to get to me when

they need to or when they can.

- [Narrator] With lots of high
school football left to play,

Scooter is now ready to declare

which scholarship offer
delivers all that.

- I decided to commit to
University of Central Florida

because they have
a great program

for what I want to
study, criminal justice.

- With all of our kids,

as long as they're
making their decisions,

and they're making it
for the right reasons,

I will always back them up.

- Being legendary to me
means leaving my mark

in a positive manner and
then going to college

and actually graduating
with my college degree.
