Football is life
for a lot of people.

Pahokee, the Blue Devils

reversed their fortunes with
a two-game winning streak.

- Hell of a game, boy.

- We're starting to come
together as the offense

putting the right people
in the right places.

- [Narrator] And with
the 40th Muck Bowl

inching ever
closer, Coach Boldin

and his staff are hoping

to keep that momentum alive.

- There's no doubt in my mind,

we're clicking on all cylinders.

Guys are bodying, my
coaches are bodying,

and now, we see
where the chips fall,

come next Friday.

(calm melancholy music)

(kids chattering faintly)

players in Muck City

begin their journeys here,

in city parks like Lakeshore
Park and Belle Glade.

These are the athletic
proofing grounds

of the Glades region
in South Florida.

It's where talent
first blossoms.

Where wide-eyed kids dream

of becoming Muck Bowl stars,

and where the all-time greats

return to give back.

- Yeah, I'm looking
forward it like,

when I make it in the NFL,

coming back, helping the kids,

run routes, and stuff like that.

- [Narrator] Preparing the
next generation for greatness

happens all over Muck City,
especially in the schools,

where educators are on a
mission to elevate academics

to an even higher
level of greatness.

- That's the big thing.

We're looking at the big picture

'cause at the end of the day,

what really matters, we
get these kids in school,

have good grades, and how
they actually be a better man.

That's the real thing
that we really care about.

- [Narrator] Good
grades are a cornerstone

of grid iron success at both
Glades Central and Pahokee.

Every player must
maintain at least

a 2.0 grade point average.

Failure to do so
results in the athlete

being ruled ineligible
putting a potentially

budding career in jeopardy.

- You are a student athlete.

There's a different
bracket for you.

- Probably the greatest talents

never got an opportunity
to display it

on the big stage,
or at college ranks,

and the pro ranks,
because of their

lack of performance
in the classroom.

- [Narrator] An
ineligible player

can also put a team's
entire season in jeopardy.

Under Florida high school rules,

allowing an academically
ineligible player

to take the field,
results in the automatic

forfeit of all games in
which that player appeared,

even if the coaching
staff had reason

to believe the student was
in gacademic standing.

It's a brutal lesson,
one that Glades Central

is about to learn the hard way.

Just two days
before an away game

against another regional

pigskin powerhouse, Miami Pace.

- You know what I'm saying?

Winners or lose, you
know what I'm saying?

I hope God is on
our side for this.

- I just showed up
at the practice,

a little practice
at 14, I'm like

I'm glad to say now,
immediately, yes.

- We got some bad news today.

Wasn't really what
we was hoping for.

- According to an FHSAA report,

Glades Central had a player,

who did not meet a 2.0 GPA,

and Glades Central
didn't know it.

So, all those games
that player played in

have to be forfeited.

Glades Central went
from being four and five

to being O and nine.

- [Narrator] As it turns
out, the player in question

entered summer practice
with a 2.4 GPA.

But when one of those
grades was later

adjusted downward,
his GPA fell to 1.9,

unbeknownst to both the player

and the Glades Central
coaching staff.

- We come and find out that

we got great problems
when we checked that

before the season started.

And all of a sudden,
we come to now.

- As the coach, I'm
devastated, I'm heartbroken.

But in life, you're
gonna go through things,

where you're gonna
be devastated,

you're gonna be heartbroken

but at the same
time, life goes on.

So it's what do I do
from this point on.

(whistle blaring)

- [Coach] Hey, bring
it in, bring it in.

(whistle blaring)

- [Player] Hey,
check your knees.

- [Coach] Check your knees,
check your knees, hurry up.

- [Narrator] With
Glade Central's

Head Coach Jessie
Hester out of town,

tending to a family
matter, it's up to his

assistant coaches to break
the news to the team.

- I talked to Coach Jessie,

and this is what he said,

"Tell 'em guys to
keep their head up."

- Listen up, listen
up, listen up.

- You just explained to
them, life has adversity,

you go through adversity,

and you defeat it,
and you move on.

So our whole goal is
just keep 'em motivated.

Forget about all this

has nothing to
do with you guys.

People, season still goes on.

Season still goes on,
and the whole thing

about the season
going on is winning.

Just win, just win.

- [Narrator] Despite the setback

because of Glades
Central's formidable

regular season
schedule, and the fact

that all of their
remaining games

are against
divisional opponents,

it's still possible
for the Raiders

to make a run at
state championship,

even after forfeiting
its first nine games.

- We just explained to them

that the whole thing is to just

play this next game, win it,

play the following game, win it,

make the playoff,
nothing changes.

- [Narrator] But that
means Glades Central

must overcome a strong
Miami Pace team this week,

and then, defeat
archrival Pahokee

in the annual Muck
Bowl a week later.

- I know today, we got
a big disappointment.

It hurt me too.

Understand this game
of football, fella.

To play football, it
require two thing.

It require your heart,

and you gotta be nuts.

Understand why I'm
telling you this.

Got to be the first person

that hit somebody in the mouth.

You got to be nuts.

Your heart come in
after he punch you back.

Are you gonna stay in the fight?

Are you gonna duck
your tail and run?

- You guys still
got a chance to make

the playoff, man,
you're number six.

Not only that
y'all know if y'all

get into Muck Bowl--
- Yeah.

- Pahokee is a 60.

If y'all beat them.
- We knock them out.

- Responsibility, you
knock 'em out the playoff.

I know they're gonna
give it all they got.

They're trying to win.

We believe them, so I
think we'll be okay.

- [Narrator] What's not okay

in the eyes of
the coaching staff

is how the player's adjusted GPA

came to the attention of
the Athletic Association

before they were notified.

The Glades Central
coaches can't help

but wo if someone
on the Blue Devil

coaching staff may
have been involved,

seeing how intertwined
the schools are,

and how they're both
vying for a playoff spot.

- What I'm thinking is,
it's a lot of bad blood

hurting me, it's
hurting me hard.

But that's the way
it is out here.

- [Narrator]
Thankfully, the players

seem to be taken to
heart the coach's message

of keeping their
heads held high.

- [Player] Even though
that hurt, Will,

you can do nothing
about it, Will.

We gotta bounce back, Will.

We gotta beat Pahokee.

(uplifting hip hop music)

- [Narrator] The biting
irony of the situation

is that across the board,
the Raiders student athletes

are having a banner
year in the classroom.

- That really took the
wind out of our sails,

or we have had a lot of kids,

they're tackling
academics extremely hard.

- [Narrator] On top of
that, Glades Central

was proactive in
handling questions

around another
player's eligibility,

that of their best athlete,

and their team's top
college prospect,

Ja'Vontae Tank Williams.

- You don't want none
of that, oh yeah.

- He's something like
really special to watch.

He's more like a wide
receiver tight end hybrid,

very hard to bring down,

and he's not gonna get denied.

He can catch balls
over the middle,

he could catch deep routes,

he can just do what,
he can do it all.

And you don't wanna take
your eyes off of him.

- Yeah, I know how good you are.

Yeah, somebody's
gonna get a steal.

They don't even
know it yet there.

They don't even
know it yet, but.

- [Ja'Vontae] Yeah, no problem.

- I wish I was out
there in the pads.

- [Coach JD] I know man.

- Especially for Muck Bowl,

we hatch that, it
will be a new deal.

Oh, we probably would've
won in the field, man.

- Would have.

- [Coach JD] Yeah, but
who gonna guard you?

- Tank is one of those
athletes who defy the odds.

His story is amazing.

- Reason I'm not playing
now like I aged out,

I turned like 19.

Only gave me like three games.

I was blessed to get
those three games.

- [Narrator] The
reason Tank aged out

is because early on in school,

he fell behind
other kids his age.

Not because he
lacked the smarts.

Instead, because he spent
much of his childhood

without a roof over his head.

- Another athlete gave me a
hint that he was homeless.

- He always has been a
person who needed help

with like family situations.

- Here and there, like
I was moving around,

place to place.

I stayed on auntie's, cousin's,

like stuff like that.

Not your mom, I was
not your family.

Growing up kinda rough,
especially down here.

Usually gonna play ball

or you're gonna
be on the streets.

- He has slept in
the park in the past.

At that point that
I just pretty much

took him up under my wing.

Ever since then,
we look after him,

and we made sure he has
everything he needs,

and he's one tremendous
hell of an athlete.

- Oh man, enough of
you already, homeboy,

but tighten up on
that ball, man.

- That's good, being able
to practice with the team

is a blessing 'cause
it keep me in shape.

- [Coach JD] There you go.

- I just come out here
every day, motivate.

- KD Fletcher and her team

at the Student Aces Center,

also helped keep Tank
motivated academically.

- What's up, good?

- Good, ma'am.

- What took you so long?

- I had forgotten, I was
running when you called me.

- You always forget.

- He said, "I really
wanna do this,"

and I said, "Do what?"

He said, "I really
wanna go to college.

"I really wanna play football."

Hey, that would not work.

Can you get on a laptop?

- I've already decided
to take football

to another level,
to show people like

what I'm made of, what I can do,

and where I come from.

Thought about it,
taking life serious.

My grades, I thought
of bringing them up.

And it all paid off.

- And he's racking up.

He's racking up on offers,

and we're making sure
that his academics

are matching his athletics,

and now, he is eligible
to leave in December,

and attend a school
of hisice.

- [Narrator] Which will it be?

Oregon, Indiana, Syracuse,
they all want Tank.

- That's a big blessing.

I gotta just thank
God every day for it.

Like He took me from one spot

and put me in another.

(peaceful melancholy music)

(clicking)

(seagulls squawking)

- [Narrator] While the
future is shaping up

nicely for Tank,
another top prospect

from the Muck just made
an unexpected detour

in his road to college.

- The recruitment process,

it is a very stressful process.

It does weigh heavily on
my heart and on my mind.

- [Narrator] Pahokee star
lineman, Scooter Kabir,

has decided to decommit from

the University of
Central Florida

after his recruiter
stopped responding

to Scooter's texts and
emails about his ACT scores.

- So I decommit
from Central Florida

because I felt l
the love wasn't there,

the same as it was early on.

The ACT, first time I took it,

he texted me, "You need
to retake the test."

So then, I had to retake it

because the scores
weren't high enough.

So I had to, I made it 21.

So I know in any other
Division I college,

that those are scores that
can get me into college.

So I sent it to
him, okay, I'm good.

About a month later,
still nothing,

so I'm like, okay.

So it probably was I
didn't commit too early,

I'm handling it pretty good.

A lot of things I just
leave it in God's hands,

so like I feel like whatever
happens, just happens.

I just try to focus
on the positive.

- [Narrator] Because of
his improved ACT scores

and his performance
on the field,

Scooter has more scholarship
offers than ever before.

- He has a couple of great
offers on the table still

that he has to make
a decision about.

- FAU, Toledo, USL,
Colorado State.

There's not a lem
with my grade.

I've never been ineligible to go

or to play Division I football.

It's just about me
finding the perfect home

that I can spend the next
probably three or four years at.

- Oh, whatever it
is, I think Scooter's

gonna be an awesome,
awesome ball player

on the next level.

He's determined, and he's
dedicated to the game.

- [Narrator] So
dedicated that scooter

continues to play
with a broken finger.

- As you can see,
this pinky is like

really working, I
really can work it,

as way better than I could
when I first broke it, so.

The pinky is fine.

- [Narrator] While Pahokee
takes the week off,

Glades Central heads
into their matchup

against Miami Pace High
School with the fallout

of their ineligible
player still lingers.

- Really was mentally
draining for those guys

to even to have that thought

of not making the playoff.

To them, that that thought alone

was a devastating blow
for their young minds.

- [Coach Shaine]
Season has not been

going the way we planned.

We had some close losses.

(crowd cheering)

- [Host] Game over!

- We've had some close wins.

(crowd cheering)

But this week, we
have mammoth plays,

which is a must win to us.

So just to get the kids
to focus on finishing.

We haven't found the formula

at the end of the game

in order for us to finish

the way we're
supposed to finish.

So we spent a lot
of times on details,

offensively and defensively.

Hopefully, we did a good job.

The key is understand.

Coaches know what
they're supposed to do,

and we can move forward.

(whistle blaring)

That's all we wanna do,

just play football,
we wanna win.

Glades Central needs

its star wideout,
Jim Davis, to shine.

But Davis can't do it all.

So quarterback Marion Moreland,

and fellow receiver

need to rack up
yards and touchdowns.

And with so many close
calls this season,

the place kicking pair
of holder Jacob Camacho,

and kicker number
40, Jose Garcia,

needs to be in lockstep.

- [Narrator] As the
Raiders warm up,

the players feel the pressure

from both the coaches and fans.

- Don't let him.

- Playing football here
has a history behind it.

So you know it's
like kinda we have

to like live up to
it, we have standards

and stuff that we gotta play to.

is a must win game

for Miami Pace and
Glades Central.

Given the stakes, the
officials warned the coaches

that they will be
calling a tight game.

If I got a problem with
one of your players,

if they throw a punch,
I can't save them.

the Glades Central Raiders

and your very own
Monsignor Pace Spartans!

- Y'all side by side,

you lead the charge, all right?

- [Host] Raiders set to receive

to start our game this evening.

- [Narrator] As the Raiders
offense takes the field,

they're just taking the action

of Pahokee Coach DJ Boldin,

offensive and
defensive coordinators

Damien Berry and
Emmanuel Hendricks,

and other members of
the Blue Devils staff.

They are there to
scout their rivals

in the upcoming Muck Bowl,

but they're also there to cheer

the Raiders on to victory.

- Saturday night, got nothing,

let's do watch football.

You know everybody on the staff.

You know the kids.

So we're here to
support the guys.

So when it comes
down to football,

we can support Glades Central.

The Muck, mostly
it was everybody.

Glades Central's the
Muck, Pahokee's the Muck.

So it's kinda always been
us that gets everybody.

- They're competing talent.

Both of them is
fighting for playoffs.

Their playoff lives, man, so.

And that we expect
it to be a dogfight.

- [Narrator] The field
isn't the only place

where the intensity of
the Pahokee-Glades Central

rivalries are on display.

Still reeling from the
ineligibility ruling,

some Glades Central fans decided

to take their frustration
out on Coach Boldin,

and his staff.

(Scooby speaking faintly)

- Scooby was funny to me.

I can't take Scooby serious.

- [Narrator] While
Boldin and his staff

downplayed the
tension in the stands,

the Raiders get off
to a rocky start

as number one, Jim Davis,

drops what could have
been a touchdown pass.

(whistle blaring)

- Don't worry about it.

- It's okay, baby.

They've got so much
talent out there,

so much talent.

Let's go defense.

- [Narrator] On
their first drive,

Miami Pace moves the ball
deep into Raider territory.

- Latino was the key filling.

He had the end
right up the middle.

- [Narrator] With the ball
on the three-yard line,

the Spartans appear
poised to score.

But the spine of the
Raider defense stiffens,

and forces a goal line fumble.

- That's a turnover
for the Spartans.

- [Narrator] This puts Glades
Central back on offense,

albeit with their backs up

against their own goal line.

- You wanna go Tony, coach?

- Raiders got the ball
right on the goal line.

- [Narrator] Glades Central
runs it up the middle

in search of a little
breathing room.

But the Miami Pace defensive
line out muscles them.

- And the Spartan
defense tightens up.

And that's a safety
for the Spartans.

- [Narrator] This
puts Glades Central

down to two to nothing,

and gives the ball to Miami Pace

in excellent field position.

- [Coach] Go!

(whistle blaring)

- Boogie, on the south, Boogie.

- [Narrator] But as the battle
in the trenches continues,

the Glades Central D begins
to gain the upper hand.

- Raiders will take
the field on offense.

- Raiders start deep
in their own end.

quarterback Marion Moreland

struggles to control a low snap

and is nearly dropped
for a second safety

before launching it
down the far sideline

to number nine,
Desna Washington.

- And the wide
receiver, Washington,

makes the catch with
the defender on him.

And that's a big
game for the Raiders.

Gets them out of the shadow

in their own end zone.

- [Narrator] The Raiders's
running game also heats up.

little brother.

Then, the Raider offense
digs a hole for itself

when a lineman is
hit with a 15-yard

un-sportsman like penalty.

- I call it straight game.

I don't care who win
this game, okay, I don't.

But Abe, when you
talk back to me,

the next time you do it,

I'm gonna send you over here,

and you're gonna be
done for the game.

- [Narrator] Miami
Pace doesn't do

themselves any favors either,

when on the next play,
Glades Central receiver,

Jim Davis, is taken
down with an unnecessary

and penalty-worthy
blindside block.

- Multi flag comes in
at the end of the play.

- Oh, and the call
is a blindside block

against the Spartans.

- Got a slight hit,

it's gotten the wind
knocked out of him.

So he took a little
break for a minute.

un-sportsman like conduct

isn't restricted to the
field as Scooby Jones

continues to give the
Pahokee coaching staff,

a piece of his mind.

it's a rivalry, how it is.

tensions running high,

Coach Hester urges his team
to keep their composure

and put some points
on the board.

make sure the kids

are not too emotionally high.

the second quarter,

the Raiders attempt
a field goal.

feel all the electricity

energy that goes on

in certain situations.

Being able to stand up
in that crucial moment.

Though the
ineligibility situation

has clouded the run-up
to next week's Muck Bowl,

Coach Hester just wants
to give Coach Boldin

props for Pahokee's
quality win last week.

- All right, coach, we'll talk.

- [Narrator] At the
start of the second half,

Miami Pace lays
another questionable

bone-crushing hit
on number nine,

Glades Central receiver,
Desna Washington.

- [Host] Ain't complete in
the back but that's gone.

Washington do not reel it in.

- [Narrator] The inability
to find the end zone

puts the pressure on the
Raiders offense and defense.

- We're trying to get sideways,

and then, get it,
and get in the yards.

- I saw the bin!

- [Narrator] The
Raiders deliver another

strong defensive stand
led by number 20,

Jermaine Mays's
touchdown saving tackle.

Back on offense, Glades
Central finally hits pay dirt,

courtesy of a bruising
30-yard touchdown run

from Desna Washington.

- [Host] That's a
touchdown for the Raiders.

- [Narrator] But
it's enough.

Miami Pace goes on to
score three more touchdowns

putting the game
well out of reach.

- [Host] The Spartans
bring home a victory,

23-nine over the Raiders
of Glades Central.

- Right now, you gotta
got few mores doubt.

been guys, a'right.

that were that's when
bad things happen.

Supposed to hurt.

uncharacteristically

ugly loss for Glades Central

but the Raiders can now
put that all behind them.

Because looming on the horizon

are the Pahokee Blue Devils

and the game every
one is waiting for.

- The Muck Bowl is what it is.

This game and not riding on it.

It's for us bragging rights.

And it is all about
the fight, the pride,

that's within you.

(birds chirping)

- [Narrator] It's
Monday afternoon

inside Anquan Boldin Stadium,

and Coach DJ Boldin is with

Defensive Coordinator
Emmanuel Hendricks

preparing a game
plan for the upcoming

showdown against Glades Central.

There's an ominous
vibe in the air

due to the fact
that Glades Central

had to forfeit several victories

because of the
ineligibility situation,

and because it's
officially Muck Bowl week.

And the rivalry
between the Raiders

and the Blue Devils is now
building to a fever pitch.

Coach Emmanuel Hendricks,
who's also a science teacher

at Glades Central believes
he knows the truth

about how the player
was deemed ineligible.

Glades Central's administrators

were simply following the rules.

- The kid grade went
from over 2.0 toward 1.9.

It came out that the
grade had been changed.

Personnel find out about it,

she rolled it up to the state.

They contacted people.

- [Narrator] In
order to abide by

the State Athletic
Association guidelines,

the Glades Central
administration
self-reported the issue.

This revelation verifies that

the Pahokee coaching
staff was not involved.

With the air cleared, Coach
Boldin and Coach Hendricks

turn their attention to
the daunting task at hand,

leading Pahokee to
victory in the Muck Bowl.

- And guess what?

We're gonna do it!

It's going down!

That we're gonna win
this game, period.

We're going to put
it on for the city,

we're gonna light it up.

- [Narrator] At Glades
Central, the crushing loss

to Pace has a surprising
silver lining.

Over the weekend,
one of the school's

forfeited victories
was reinstated

since the player in question
never entered the game,

which means the
Raiders's playoff hopes

have been resurrected.

For Coach Hester, it's just
another day at the office

in an increasingly
roller coaster season.

- Get back at it Monday,

just to get back on
our regular schedule.

So we have an extra
day for preparation

because the game is
on Saturday as well.

from the practice field

is Tank Williams, who
can no longer play

because he turned 19, three
games into the season.

why Tank is in that practice.

It's because he's
graduated early

from Glades Central
and has accepted

a scholarship to
Syracuse University.

- So this is my baby right here.

This is Ja'Vontae Tank Williams.

And just last week,
I flew him up there

and dropped him off.

Tank has come a long way.

Tank has come a very long way

from not even knowing
how far he can go

in this process to
ending up with probably

like over 15 Division I offers.

That journey has been
extremely, extremely worth it.

Mission accomplished, probably
one of the toughest ones

that I've had in
my entire career,

but the most deserving.

I'm proud of him,

like I had to shed a
few tears on this one.

- [Narrator] But like so
many local heroes before,

Tank will be back for the
next week's Muck Bowl,

a game many experts consider
to be the greatest rivalry

in all of high school football.

And that fuels the dreams

of the next generation of
Muck City's grid iron greats.

- The Muck Bowl is
something that you,

you look forward to as a kid,

because that's something
that has been ingrained

in us as a youth, so
it's definitely a game

that we all look forward to.
