On the authority of the Holy Word,
l rise up and take my stand.
lf you enjoy beautiful four-part harmony,
if you believe that laughter is good for the heart,
if you think you've heard the best tenor alive,
if you thrill at hearing the good news
sung with conviction, or if you've ever wondered
if the message inside the music is real--
Jesus in my heart.
Then sit back and enjoy this spectacular evening
with the Gaither Vocal Band.
This is Mort Crim inviting you to join us
for an extraordinary evening filled with all the music,
all the laughter,
and all the joy your heart can hold.
Featuring:
in ''l Do Believe.''
He has Jupiter for a pillow, angel choir for a lullaby,
clouds for a blanket, and the moon is His night-light.
But He don't ever sleep
'cause He's busy watchin' over me.
He rules the universe from His throne on high.
But when l need attention, He is by my side.
He's watchin' me.
Yes, He's watchin' me.
He's a busy God, but on His list of things to do,
His number one priority is watchin' me and you.
He's taking care of business, feeding birds and making rain.
But He'll stop what He's doing when l speak His name,
'cause He's watchin'; He's watchin' me.
He might be busy painting rainbows
or making demons flee.
But He'll still find the time
to make some time for you and me.
There's nothin', oh, no, nothin' He would rather do.
Well, He knows when l'm in trouble.
He don't miss a thing.
One eye's on that sparrow, and the other one's on me.
He's watchin' me.
Yes, He's watchin' me.
He's a busy God, but on His list of things to do,
His number one priority is watchin' me and you.
He's taking care of business, feeding birds and making rain,
but He'll stop what He's doing when l speak His name.
He's a busy God, but on His list of things to do,
His number one priority is watchin' me and you.
He's taking care of business, feeding birds and making rain,
but He'll stop what He's doing when l speak His name,
'cause He's watchin'; He's watchin' me.
Yes, He's watchin'.
He's watchin' me.
Well, He's watchin'.
He's watchin' me.
And hello, New Orleans.
Great.
We came in three or four days early.
We've been having a ball: eating at all the restaurants,
picking up all the local color, and it's been a lot of fun here.
Yeah, it's been great.
l've been here with my buddy, and we've been busy.
We have been.
God's been watching me eat.
That's what the song says.
He's a-watchin' you.
People love, in New Orleans, to have fun, don't they?
And you better be careful.
He's been watching you very, very carefully.
Of course He's watching me.
God's watching me all the time.
He loves me so much,
He can't take His eyes off of me.
And lately, He's been watching me eat,
ever since we got here.
And the food is great, isn't it?
l love the food here.
l tell you; l like it hot and spicy.
l like it so hot, it's cooking all the way down.
Where else in New Orleans can you order things
like jambalaya, gumbo, and crawfish pie?
You know?
And you know what a crawfish is.
Y'all know what a crawfish is?
lt's a lobster after taxes.
So you're loving it here.
l say l love it.
That Louisiana Purchase, that was a good idea you had.
How much you get for it?
Mark, Mark.
l wasn't around when that purchase happened.
Trust me; l wasn't there.
Were you making another video?
No, no.
Well, it's your loss.
'Cause if l'd seen it
on the Home Shopping Network first, l'd have bought it.
You know, all this food
and good music we've been hearing
really started my creative juices flowing,
Bill, and you know,
l was having my quiet time this afternoon.
And l got a song from--
Now, don't tell me God gave you a song.
Yeah, you want to hear it?
l think--
l think it's going to be a hit.
Good-bye, Joe.
Me gotta go, me-oh, my-oh.
Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou.
Y'all like it.
Oh, pick guitar, fill fruit jar, and be gay-oh.
Son of a gun, we're going to have big fun on the bayou.
Yeah.
l wrote that this afternoon.
You like it?
lt's going to be a hit.
l tell you; l can write a song.
Mark.
What?
l hate to tell you this.
That song's already been written.
You mean somebody was eavesdropping on me and God?
No, l'm sorry.
Hank Williams wrote that song about 50 years ago.
He wrote about it 50 years ago.
So l tell you what.
What?
Why don't you go back--
since the Lord gave you that song--
why don't you go back and pray real hard,
and maybe He will give you
an original melody with original words.
Okay, let me think about it.
Okay, l got it.
Good-bye, Bill.
l think l'm ill, me-oh, my-oh.
Got to go, had six bowls of the gumbo.
That's an original melody.
Maybe l better pray a little harder.
Yeah, l think you better pray a little harder,
but l tell you what;
this song is an original song,
and it did happen about 50 years ago,
written by a man named Harris.
And it is still a good song,
and this song did come from the Lord.
Listen.
l wrote this one this afternoon too.
No, you did not write this this afternoon.
Oh, then l cry,
''O rock of ages,
hide, Thou, me.''
Sometimes l feel discouraged,
and l think my work's in vain.
l'm tempted oft to murmur,
to grumble, and complain.
Oh, but then l think of Jesus
and all that He's done for me.
Then l cry, ''O rock of ages,
''hide, Thou, me.
''O rock of ages,
hide, Thou, me.''
There is no other refuge
can save, Lord, but Thee.
And through this dark world l wander
far, far from thee.
Oh, then l cry, ''O rock of ages,
Hide, Thou, me.''
''Hide, Thou, me.''
Hi, l'm Terry Blackwood.
The Gaither Vocal Band-- what can we say?
They're just the best.
Proud to call them my friends.
Where the river flows, where the river flows.
Bring all your troubles.
Take off your heavy shoes.
Tired of the hustle?
Let it wash away your blues.
Where the river flows, where the river flows.
Wade in the water.
Step off the dusty ground.
lf it gets hotter, you can cool your spirit down.
Flow from Heaven, flow down over me.
Where the river flows, where the river flows,
where there is healing for every wounded soul.
Lost in the feeling, let the mighty river roll.
Flow from Heaven,
flow down over me.
Where the river flows,
where the river flows.
Where the river flows.
This is a young group.
lt's a mom and a dad and a 1 7-year-old daughter
that can really, really sing.
And the talent in this field just keeps coming and coming,
and it blows my mind.
So if you're happy to have
the Talleys with us this evening,
get your hands together and welcome the Talley Trio.
A long, long time ago, my heart was burdened with sin.
My head bowed down in sorrow.
The devil had me troubled within.
Well, l started out seeking salvation.
l had a hard time resisting temptation.
But l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Well, l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
Kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
He changed my heart.
He changed my heart so l could live right.
Oh, He changed my mind.
He changed my mind so l could think right.
He changed my mouth.
He changed my mouth so l could talk right.
Got into my feet.
He changed my feet so l could walk right.
Well, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Looking high and low along the wandering way,
my soul was full of longing until one glorious day.
lt was then my anticipation gave away to sweet consolation,
and l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Well, l kept on searchin', searchin'.
Yes, l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
He changed my heart.
He changed my heart so l could live right.
Oh, He changed my mind.
He changed my mind so l could think right.
He changed my mouth.
He changed my mouth so l could talk right.
Got into my feet.
He changed my feet so l could walk right.
Yes, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Well, l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
Oh, l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
He changed my heart.
He changed my heart so l could live right.
Oh, he changed my mind.
He changed my mind so l could think right.
And He changed my mouth.
He changed my mouth so l could talk right.
And He got right down to my feet.
He changed my feet so l could walk right.
Yes, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Oh, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Oh, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Oh, yes, l'm so glad l found the King of Kings, yeah.
Jason Crabb, come on, guy, sing.
Looking high and low along the wondering way,
My soul was full of longing until one glorious day.
lt was then my anticipation gave way to sweet consolation,
but l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Searchin', searchin',
yes, l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
He changed my heart.
He changed my heart so l could live right.
He changed my mind.
He changed my mind so l could think right.
And He changed my mouth.
He changed my mouth so l could talk right.
Got into my feet.
Changed my feet so l could walk right.
l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
Oh, l kept on searchin', searchin'.
l kept on searchin' till l found Him.
He changed my heart.
He changed my heart so l could live right.
He changed my mind.
He changed my mind so l could think right.
He changed my mouth.
He changed my mouth so l could talk right.
He got into my feet.
He changed my feet so l could walk right.
And l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Oh, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Oh, l kept on searchin' till l found the King of Kings.
Oh, until l found the King of Kings.
Oh, yeah.
The Talley Trio:
Debra and Roger and their daughter, Lauren,
1 7 years old.
That was Jason Crabb who helped them there.
Mark, these kids
keep getting younger and more talented.
l know it.
We keep getting older.
And it seemed like--
Uh-oh.
This ain't Mardi Gras.
l think y'all have the wrong theater.
Who is that masked woman?
lt's your wife.
And Connie Hopper.
Connie Hopper.
You married her, buddy.
And you were-- l thought you were--
You were shopping this afternoon, right?
Down on Bourbon Street.
No, no.
lt don't match my shoes.
Thank you.
l don't think we can use this, can we?
l don't think we--
lt kind of looks like your hair.
Don't, don't, don't start.
Let's don't start on that.
No, no.
Let's don't start on the hair tonight.
Here, Anthony.
You're a piano player.
You can get by with this.
Sing, Guy.
Well, l used to believe
that the more you had got you through these days,
made your poor heart glad.
But l'm paring down.
l've been cutting back,
and l don't even miss all the things l lack.
l'm learning how to separate the wants from the needs.
The good life now consists of just a few simple things:
Jesus in my heart and a place to belong,
a few close friends and one good song.
Oh, my latest list, well, it ain't too long,
just a Godly love and one good song.
Got a lighter load since l ridded out,
since l realized what it's all about.
lt's a downsize day, and you can't take it all.
They say little is much when you hear that call.
The focus cleared when excess made my heart prioritize.
Now less is more
when less includes the basics of life:
Jesus in my heart and a place to belong,
a few close friends and one good song.
Oh, my latest list, well, it ain't too long,
just a Godly love and one good song.
Everyone's got cornerstones, and thank God l've got mine.
Here it is in black and white.
Here's the bottom line.
Jesus in my heart and a place to belong,
a few close friends and one good song.
Oh, my latest list, well, it ain't too long,
just a Godly love and one good song,
just a Godly love and one good song.
Are you happy to see Guy Penrod here tonight?
We're happy.
l think since the last time
we've been down in this part of the country,
Guy and Angie have had yet another boy.
They have five little Penrod boys
running around the place there now.
So they have their own quartet.
He's starting his own race.
He's been busy.
He lives out in the woods.
Got to get him a TV.
When God said, ''Be fruitful and multiply,''
he said, ''okey-dokey.''
That's why he had no time to get a haircut.
Just be quiet.
Busy.
l think we need to sing this song.
Sing it.
Loving God, loving each other,
making music with my friends.
Loving God, loving each other,
and the story never ends.
They pushed back from the table to listen to His words,
His secret plan before He had to go.
lt's not complicated.
Don't need a lot of rules.
This is all you need to know.
lt's loving God, loving each other--
Making music with my friends.
Making music with my friends.
Loving God, loving each other,
and the story never ends.
Sing it again-- Loving God---
Loving God, loving each other--
Making music--
Making music with my friends.
Loving God, loving each other,
and the story never ends,
and the story never ends.
No, the story never ends.
No, the story never ends.
Some say faith is just believing.
Others say it's self-deceiving,
inventing childish dreams to get us through.
Deep inside me,
there's a yearning for true wisdom,
not just learning.
l'd trade all my clever questions
for one answer that is true.
l do believe You are the one, the home l've longed to find,
my only hope, God's only son.
l do believe.
l touch; l see that all along,
You've longed to be my Lord, my God.
Lord, you know l need some answers.
Questions eat at me like cancer.
Make me once again a simple child.
Help me take the risk of losing,
lose it all to find in choosing to believe You are the answer:
Earth and Heaven reconciled.
l do believe You are the one, the home l've longed to find,
my only hope, God's only son.
l do believe.
l touch; l see that all along, You've longed to be...
l do believe You are the one, the home l've longed to find,
my only hope, God's only son.
l do believe.
l touch; l see that all along,
You've longed to be my Lord, my God,
my Lord, my God,
my Lord, my God.
We met the Gaithers in '93,
and we just love them
because what you see is what you get,
and that's what l like is just real people.
And l think that's what they like.
We enjoy being around them too,
because they're so inspirational not only to us professionally
but as a husband and wife
trying to manage career and family
and all of this traveling.
And Gloria and Bill, being teachers,
there is never a day that we don't spend time with them
that we don't learn something that's worthwhile in life.
l look up here at all of the guys,
and l think we all started out as church kids.
Guy's dad's a preacher; my dad's a preacher.
One church kid, though,
did a pretty silly thing a little while ago
walking in with that--
Oh, well.
And l guess, probably,
we can't remember when we didn't want
to be God's person.
And l signed up for that early on,
really early, as a child.
And it was sweet to know God as a child.
But l had no clue what l was signing up for,
and l suppose if l had, it would've scared me to death.
Now looking back,
l know l said a lot of things then as a 20-year-old kid,
things like ''Because He lives, we can face tomorrow,''
but l had no idea where that would take us.
And they were true then, and l meant them then.
But those things that l said then,
if we said them tonight,
would be a whole different ball game.
People have often asked if we've written a biography.
And this is it.
lf we ever write one,
it'll be maybe longer, but it will say no more.
And this is really all l care about you hearing tonight.
l hope you hear it in every song
and every laughter and all things,
because l've come to believe
that all that God puts in our lives--
good and bad, joy and pain, successes and failures--
sometimes horrible failures--
He puts there to crowd us to Him,
and that's what life's all about:
to have a relationship with God.
When l started my journey in fresh childlike trust,
l believed that the Lord's way was best.
l would read in His word how He mothered the bird
and grieved when it fell from its nest.
How l felt His delight when l chose to do right
and prayed l would not make Him sad.
We would meet on the way in the cool of the day.
What a pure, sweet communion we had.
Oh, but now more than ever, l cherish the cross.
More than ever, l sit at His feet.
All the miles of my journey have proved my Lord true,
and He is so precious to me.
Oh, the road l have traveled has sometimes been steep,
through wild, jagged places of life.
And sometimes l've stumbled and fallen so hard
that the stones cut my soul like a knife.
Oh, but the staff of my shepherd would reach out for me
and lift me to cool pastures green.
Oil of the spirit anointing my wounds,
there l'd rest by the clear healing stream.
Oh, but now more than ever, l cherish the cross.
More than ever, l sit at His feet.
All the miles of my journey have proved my Lord true,
and He is so precious to me.
ls love's old sweet story too good to be true?
Do you find all this hard to believe?
Has the cruel world we live in so battered your heart
that the hurt child inside you can't grieve?
Oh, l can't say l blame you.
l've been where you are.
And all l can say is, ''lt's true.''
You're wanted; you're precious; you're the love of His heart.
And the old rugged cross was for you.
Oh, but now more than ever, l cherish the cross.
More than ever, l sit at His feet.
All the miles of my journey have proved my Lord true,
and He is so precious to me.
Oh, but now more than ever, l cherish the cross.
More than ever, l sit at His feet.
All the miles of my journey have proved my Lord true,
and He is so precious to me.
Oh, He is so precious to me.
Yes, He is so precious to me.
So many years l cried 'cause my soul denied
that He would save a wretch like me.
So full of gloom and dread that l hung my head,
l wouldn't claim the victory.
Then one day, His love, like a winged dove,
settled down upon my life,
and l realized He had authorized
my ticket to paradise.
On the authority of the Holy Word,
l rise up and take my stand.
l'm a blood-bought child of the living God
who is the great l Am.
l'm an heir to all that Heaven holds,
and no principality can ever take away
my royal crown given on His authority.
lt's a mystery why He came to me,
why He would choose me for His own,
why He pulled me out of the lake of doubt,
set me right beside His throne,
why He guaranteed, with His seal decreed,
my inheritance by right.
l'm His favorite child, and that makes me smile.
l'm the center of His delight.
On the authority of the Holy Word,
l rise up and take my stand.
l'm a blood-bought child of the living God
who is the great l Am.
l'm an heir to all that Heaven holds,
and no principality can ever take away
my royal crown given on His authority.
On the authority of the Holy Word,
l rise up and take my stand.
l'm a blood-bought child of the living God
who is the great l Am.
l'm an heir to all that Heaven holds,
and no principality can ever take away
my royal crown given on His authority.
Well, l'm an heir to all that Heaven holds,
and no principality can ever take away
my royal crown given on His authority.
Amen.
This is so much fun for us, because most of the time,
most of the time that we do what we do,
we are with other people.
So it's a chance to get to know us in depth,
and that's rather scary
when you start and think about it.
And this is as deep as it gets.
And to find out if there is any depth.
You've already met Mark, and you've met Guy.
l think this is the greatest first tenor
l have ever heard in my life: David Phelps.
David and his lovely wife, Lori, just had another little baby,
and they have three.
They're a little bit behind Guy.
They're not in Guy's category,
and that was just, what, last week?
About two weeks ago? The baby is now--
Two weeks ago.
And Guy wins.
And Guy wins.
Yeah, but not in weight.
That's right; he had a ten-pound baby boy.
Or she had a ten-pound baby boy.
l had very little to do with it.
His wife is about this tall, just a petite little--
She's about the same size as the baby.
And my wife's this tall, and we have seven-pound babies.
l don't know.
David is a graduate from Baylor University.
He's a vocal performance major from Baylor,
and it really paid off.
A vocal performance major, Mark.
La-dee-da-dee-da.
La-de--l got in here without no education.
David Phelps is my favorite singer.
Here is one of the greatest keyboard players
you've ever heard.
Get your hands together and welcome Anthony Burger.
Anthony.
Mark Lowry is my favorite singer.
A lot of times, people ask us,
''What style are you?''
And it's really hard to put a label on what we do.
We really came out of-- no, l mean a style of music.
That hair style.
No, no, no.
Don't--don't go into the hair.
But--
l have no intentions of going in that hair.
There's room for missionaries on furlough in there.
Just--but--
Get your hand down.
They'll think you're pentecostal.
Mark, just hush up a second, would you?
l'm just trying to help.
l just want to be a blessing.
But it's kind of hard
to put a label on what we do stylistically.
We like a little bit of everything,
but this one thing for sure-- because of our association
with Jake and the southern gospel quartets,
we sooner or later come back to this style.
This is a song written back in 1 948
by one of the greatest southern gospel convention writers ever.
His name was Vep Ellis.
Okay, just pay attention, Mark.
l'm trying to.
l didn't take my Ritalin today, and it's hard.
You're not still on Ritalin, are you?
No.
You don't remember--
you remember when l came off of Ritalin?
That's right.
Remember about five years ago,
same day you went on Prozac.
l am not--
Yes, you did.
You remember?
You remember, don't you?
But here is the song.
The love of God has been extended
to a fallen race.
Through Christ, the savior of all men,
there's hope in saving grace, saving grace.
The love of God is greater far
than gold or silver ever could afford.
lt reaches past the highest star
and covers all the world.
lts power is eternal, eternal.
lts glory is supernal, supernal.
When all this earth shall pass away,
there'll always be the love of God.
lt goes beneath the deepest stain
that sin could ever leave,
redeeming souls to live again,
who will, on Christ, believe.
Oh, the love of God is greater far
than gold or silver ever could afford.
lt reaches past the highest star
and covers all the world.
lts power is eternal, eternal.
lts glory is supernal, supernal.
When all this earth shall pass away,
there'll always be the love of God.
l want you to keep that hand going
and welcome family harmony at its very, very best:
The Martins.
Somebody say, ''God's good.''
God's good.
Oh, yes, He is.
Come on.
Everybody in the house.
Does the world get you down?
lf you're doing too much
looking at the sin and sorrow goin' round,
don't it make you want to cry?
Well, l've cried some myself,
and l've learned a little lesson:
how to set my sights on something else.
l wouldn't tell you no lie.
l wouldn't lie to you.
l could worry and pout in the shadow of doubt,
but l'm running out of reasons why.
Because God's good, so good, absolutely, positively,
definitely nothing but good to me and you.
Can l get a witness?
On my baddest bad day or my deepest dark night,
l know that everything is going to be all right.
Because God's so good.
Oh, yes, He is.
lt's hard when it hurts
and when it's getting so confusing,
you don't even know which came first.
Was it the clouds or the rain?
He is strong when we're not,
and He's forgiving when we stumble,
never ending love no matter what.
And He ain't fixin' to change.
Oh, no.
You say is He aware?
And does He even care?
l say yes, He is, and yes, He does.
Because God's good, so good.
Oh, yes, He is absolutely, positively, definitely
nothing but good to me and you and you and you.
On my baddest bad day or my deepest dark night,
l know that everything is going to be all right.
'Cause He's so, so, so, so good.
He is, He is good.
Yeah.
He is, He is good.
He is, He is, He is good.
Hallelujah.
Praise God.
My favorite singer is Guy Penrod.
Bill Gaither is my favorite singer.
David Phelps, probably my favorite singer.
No, Guy Penrod's my favorite singer.
You know, Mark-- Mark is funny.
Oh, yeah.
And you know, Bill-- he's just--he's really--
He's old.
Old.
He's old.
Yeah, he's old, old.
lt's kind of scary.
Bill's kind of scary, l think.
He's old.
You know, on the bus sometimes, he's kind of scary,
don't you think?
Shine, let it shine; let it shine; let it shine.
Don't hide it under a bushel, no.
l'm going to let it shine.
Don't hide it under a bushel, no.
l'm going to let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel, no.
l'm going to let it shine.
Let it shine; let it shine; let it shine.
Hey, Bill, where you going?
Did l tell you
l had a dream about you last night?
No.
l did.
l dreamed l died, actually.
l heard you couldn't dream
that you died and actually wake up, but l did.
l dreamed l died and went to Heaven.
And l was heading up this big hill--
Y'all may not know this,
but there's a big hill going up to Heaven.
lt was in my dream,
and l made it about halfway, and l got wore out.
l mean, l was just panting and breathing
and finally just laid down, 'cause l'm so out of shape.
Pretty soon, here you come running up the hill,
'cause you've lost all that weight.
You just come running up the hill.
You see me laying there.
You say, ''Mark, what's wrong with you?''
And l said, ''Oh, Bill, l'm just tired.
l'm taking a breather.''
And you said, ''Well, come on, get on my shoulders.
l'll carry you to the pearly gates.''
And you put me on your shoulders.
That was nice.
That was real sweet.
And we got to the pearly gates,
and there was old Peter, you know.
Of course, he recognized me.
And he said, ''Hey, Mark. How you doing?''
l said, ''Fine, Pete. How are you?''
He said--he told me.
He said, ''Come on in, Mark. Come on.
''We've been waiting on you,
but you're going to have to leave your donkey outside.''
Bill, don't play with that.
What?
Don't play with that.
What?
We're on TV.
Don't play with that.
Good night.
Get him out of lndiana,
but you can't get lndiana out of him.
Don't play with that.
Good night.
lt's hard enough to look at much less play with it.
l lost some weight,
and l'm proud of losing the weight, but--
You lost a lot of weight.
But l don't know what to do with this.
Can l play with it?
No, no, no, no.
l used to play with my grandmother's arm.
l loved that.
You know that thing that hangs down there.
She had a big old soft thing, you know.
Used to prop that up in church
and make a pillow when the sermon got boring.
lt's great.
l don't think l could prop that up.
No, no, no, no.
Here, let me try.
No, no, no, no.
lt does keep the grandkids busy, though.
l noticed the other day little Jesse was on my lap,
and he was playing with that.
And finally he said, ''Grandpa?''
l said, ''Yeah.''
He said, ''Did God make you?''
And l said, ''Yeah, he did, Jesse.''
He waited for a little bit.
And he said, ''Did God make me?''
l said, ''Yeah, he did, Jesse.''
He said, ''You know,
He's doing a better job these days, isn't He?''
So it kept him busy.
Let's do an a cappella tune.
Okay, without music?
What?
That's what a cappella means.
Oh, is that what that means?
l didn't go to Baylor.
We don't learn them big french words.
l've heard of Acapulco.
l visited there onced.
But we start this by doing a good old hum.
Good old hum, all right.
Jake and the Statesmen--
when they would start these a cappella songs,
you had to do a real good hum.
Okay, here we go.
Okay.
Petticoat Junction.
lt kind of reminded me of that.
l loved that show.
Whoo-whoo.
Jesus on the main line.
Tell Him what you want.
Jesus on the main line.
Tell Him what you want.
Jesus on the main line.
Tell Him what you want.
Call Him up and tell Him what you want.
You can call Him up.
l said...
Call Him up.
l said tell Him what you want.
Call Him up.
l said call Him up.
l said tell Him what you want.
Call Him up.
l said call Him up.
l said tell Him what you want.
Call Him up and tell Him what you want.
Well, His line ain't never busy.
You can tell Him what you want.
His line ain't never busy.
You can tell Him what you want.
His line ain't never busy.
You can tell Him what you want.
You can call Him up and tell Him what you want.
lf you're sick and you gotta get well,
tell Him what you want.
lf you're sick and you want to get well,
tell Him what you want.
lf you're sick and you want to get well,
tell Him what you want.
Call Him up and tell Him what you want.
You can call Him up.
l said call Him up.
l said tell Him what you want.
Call Him up.
l said call Him up.
l said tell Him what you want.
Call Him up.
Call Him up and tell Him what you want.
Call Him up and tell Him.
Oh, you got to tell Him what you...
Oooh.
Yeah, yeah.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
That's precious.
Thank you.
Yes, it's just a gift from God.
l can't take credit for it.
They did it first.
They were going, ''Ooh, ooh.''
How stupid can you get, Mark?
You ain't seen nothing yet.
Want.
Be seated, please.
Thank you.
God bless you.
O my Lord, what a time, mm-mmm.
O my Lord, what a time.
From this old world to flee to live eternally,
o my Lord, what a time.
O my Lord, what a time, mm-mmm.
O my Lord, what a time.
From this old world to flee to live eternally,
O my Lord, what a time.
O my Lord, what a time, mm-mmm.
O my Lord, what a time.
From this old world to flee to live eternally,
o my Lord, what a time.
ln that fair land, there will be no more night,
no sun or moon,
for the lamb of God is the light.
lt's good to know that he's prepared a way
to a bright and endless day.
From this old world, from this old world to flee.
We're going to live, to live eternally with Christ
our blessed Lord in a home on high.
We'll shout and sing.
We'll walk and talk.
We'll shout and sing.
We'll walk and talk.
We'll shout and praise His name every day.
Every day will be the same.
O my Lord, my burden bearer, my help in trouble,
my joy in sorrow, my light in darkness,
my sword and shield.
O my Lord, what a time.
From this old world,
we're going to live eternally with Christ our blessed Lord
in a home on high.
O my Lord, what a time, what a time.
From this old world, from this old world to flee.
We're going to live, to live eternally,
with Christ our blessed Lord in a home on high.
O my Lord, what a time, what a time.
Jake Hess.
You know, Bill Gaither is my favorite singer.
Was that believable?
This guy is a very, very special man.
''Honor'' is a good word.
lt's a biblical word.
And one of the joys of doing the videos has been--
for me, has been the chance to bring some honor to people
who really deserve it.
And this man certainly does.
He paved the way.
He and many of his partners in that day paved the way.
And it was good to get to know him
later on in life and find out
he was just as great as l thought he was.
That's not always the case.
'Cause you kind of get close to some folks,
and you say, ''l kind of wish
l could've remembered them in my memory.''
But this is the real thing: Jake Hess.
And here is a song he sang with the old Statesmen.
l love this song.
Give him a good hand.
We wouldn't have strength
to bear our sorrow if God didn't care.
There never would be a glad tomorrow
if God didn't care.
We wouldn't have
a hope of earning a mansion in the sky.
We wouldn't expect our Lord's returning.
For if He came and didn't care, He'd surely pass you by.
Those welcoming bells would not be ringing
if God didn't care.
Those Heavenly voices wouldn't be singing
if God didn't care.
He wouldn't have said we'd be rewarded
and promised us joy beyond compare.
No, there wouldn't be any hope of Heaven
if God didn't care.
Oh, those welcoming bells would not be ringing
if my God didn't care.
Those Heavenly voices wouldn't be singing
if God didn't care.
He wouldn't have said we'd be rewarded
and promised us joy beyond compare.
No, there wouldn't be any hope of Heaven
if God didn't care.
Love that man.
We are looking forward to singing this song.
Because really it's a song about us.
My daughter Suzanne wrote it, but it's really about us.
And a lot of people say,
you know, ''What do you do on the bus?''
You know, ''What do you do when you're together?''
This is a pretty up-front bunch of guys, right?
Right.
l mean, we speak our minds,
and everybody has a say-so in what we do.
Yeah, right.
Oh, yeah.
Let me tell you something.
lt is a dictatorship.
Oh, come on.
And there it is.
No, no, no.
Benevolent dictator.
But this song is a song about our relationship.
And it's a crazy relationship.
l mean, it is a--
sometimes it's right in your face.
Sometimes it's supportive.
You get by with nothing around here.
You get by with more than we do.
No one said that this was a picnic.
Bumping with you is like hitting a wall.
You knocked off some of my rough edges,
so l'm going to hang for the long, long haul.
l really need what you bring to the party.
The differences here ain't no big deal.
All this rub just makes us better.
We sharpen each other like steel on steel.
You like that?
l like it.
Well, we're not known for holding back opinions.
l've got my knack for invading your space.
l ain't afraid of cleaning your carpet.
And l ain't afraid of getting in your face.
l really need what you bring to the party.
The differences here ain't no big deal.
'cause all this rub just makes us better.
We sharpen each other like steel on steel.
Yeah, we sharpen each other like steel on steel.
When the smoke clears, l know you're a brother.
Follow this through to the bitter end.
We stick around, we might learn something.
Something about how to be a good--
l really need what you bring to the party.
The differences here ain't no big deal.
'Cause all this rub just makes us better.
We sharpen each other like steel on steel.
l really need what you bring to the party.
The differences here ain't no big deal.
'Cause all this rub just makes us better.
We sharpen each other like steel on steel.
Yeah, we sharpen each other like steel on steel.
We sharpen each other like steel on steel.
Yeah, we sharpen each other like steel on steel.
We sharpen each other like steel on steel.
Yeah.
Many of us at one time or another
face the emotion of loneliness.
l think Mosie Lister
probably captured it best when he wrote,
''l don't know a thing in this whole wide world
that's worse than being alone.''
But the beauty of that song is that he then takes us
to a place where we don't have to be lonely again.
Once l stood in the night with my head bowed low
in the darkness as black as could be,
and my heart felt alone, and l cried, ''O Lord,
don't hide Your face from me.''
Hold my hand all the way, every hour, every day,
from here to the great unknown.
Take my hand.
Let me stand where no one stands alone.
Like a king, l may live in a palace so tall,
with great riches to call my own.
Oh, but l don't know a thing in this whole wide world
that's worse than being alone.
Hold my hand all the way, every hour, every day,
from here to the great unknown.
Take my hand.
Let me stand where no one stands alone.
Take my hand.
Let me stand
where no one stands alone.
Jeff and Sheri Easter were some of the first people l met
after l joined the Vocal Band,
and we've gotten to spend a whole lot of time with them since then.
And l have learned over the past few years
that the best thing about Jeff Easter is Sheri Easter.
Listen as they sing their song ''One Way.''
Y'all help us out. Come on.
This is a brand-new song that Sheri wrote.
lt's called ''One Way.''
There's only one way to get it,
one way to keep it, one way to show it,
one way to seek it, one way to know it,
and one way to praise His name.
Only one way to give it, one way to sing it,
one way to live it, one way to speak it,
one way, and that way is with all of your heart.
This world is full of tricks and potions,
quick-fix methods, and silly notions
of how to make life worth living again.
They say, ''Take a little this. Do a little that.
Save a little bit. Give a little back.''
But l know you'll find it if you only do one thing.
'Cause there's only one way to get it,
one way to keep it, one way to show it,
one way to seek it, one way to know it,
and one way to praise His name.
Only one way to give it, one way to sing it,
one way to live it, one way to speak it,
one way, and that way is with all of your heart.
Well, l don't know about what you believe,
but l'm trying to say just don't be deceived by this world
and all the promises she makes.
Well, you can take a little this.
Do a little that.
Brother, let me tell you you'll come up flat out of luck.
'Cause this life ain't never cheap.
Russ Taff.
There's only one way to get it,
one way to keep it, one way to show it,
one way to seek it, one way to know it,
and one way to praise His name.
l will praise His name.
Only one way to give it, one way to sing it,
one way to live it, one way to speak it,
one way, and that way is with all of your heart.
ls with all your heart.
There's only one way to get it,
one way to keep it, one way to show it,
one way to seek it, one way to know it,
and one way to praise His name.
l'm going to praise His name.
Only one way to give it, one way to sing it,
one way to live it, one way to speak it,
one way, and that way is with all of your heart.
All your heart.
One way, and that way is with all your heart.
With all my heart, with all your heart.
Jeff and Sheri Easter and Russ Taff.
l've been with the Gaithers for 1 3 years now,
going on 1 3 years, and--
And when l was kid, l used to come sit in the concerts in Houston,
and mama would take me out here,
and l'd see Gloria and Bill singing to each other,
and l never dreamed-- honestly, l never dreamed--
they'd even know my name much less l'd get to sing with them
and pick on Bill and have breakfast with Gloria,
which is the best part about this whole thing:
getting to pick that brain, 'cause that is a masterful brain.
And she has taught me so much about God and loving God.
And the thing l've noticed from being--
sitting out there watching them and then being on stage with them
is that sometimes out there,
it can look like we got it all together
and we've got some key, some super spiritual--
Let me tell you something.
We are full of doubts.
We are full of questions.
We are full of struggles.
The only difference between us and you is about three feet.
We're three feet higher up on the stage.
We're trying to make a message and get a point across
that there's someone bigger than us
and someone who has got all the answers.
We do not.
l struggle with a lot of things, and l am not perfect,
and l just want you to know that they aren't either.
l've gotten to know them.
And l love them more because l've seen their scars.
We've all got them.
And sometimes when people--
Now that we're on TV so much, it makes it even worse.
Because sometimes you see people on TV
that make you promises that if you have so much faith,
your life will be good; you won't be sick.
Statistics prove one out of one die.
lt doesn't matter how much faith you got.
You're going to get old.
You're going to get sick, and you're going to die.
'Cause we're not home yet.
This is boot camp.
This is where He's conforming us and knocking off the rough edges.
So don't be deceived by anyone on TV
promising you something that you know they can't deliver.
And l love this song.
Suzanne Gaither, who is, of course--
Suzanne Gaither Jennings, who is Bill and Gloria's daughter,
wrote this song,
and l would've written it if l would've thought of it.
l love this song.
l love what it says.
And when l started singing this song,
the Lord started answering this prayer.
l made it a prayer from me to God,
and l hope you'll do the same.
Listen to the words of this song.
l've seen a lot of crazy things
done in Your name.
l know the tricks behind the magic show.
l've almost thrown the towel in a time or two
and walked away from everything l know.
But l can't fill this emptiness inside of me
or calm the troubled waters of my mind.
So if You're really out there and You're listening,
then prove to me that those who seek will find.
lf You can just see fit to show me some of who You are,
if You can shed some light into this broken sinner's heart.
l need to know the truth, and l need something l can feel.
l need You
to make it real.
There must be some good reason why You brought me here
through valleys where the shadows hover close.
Down here, there's a mask to cover every face,
but Your sweet face l long to see the most.
So if You think there's just the slightest hope for me
in spite of all my questions and my doubts,
then let me hear Your still small voice
speak out my name
and let me know what others talk about.
lf You can just see fit to show me some of who You are,
if You can shed some light into this broken sinner's heart.
l need to know the truth, and l need something l can feel.
l need You to make it real.
l need to know the truth, and l need something l can feel.
l need You
to make it real.
Now, l've heard some talkers, and l've heard some teachers,
and l've heard some poets, and l've heard some preachers.
And l've sung along with some pretty good singers.
And l've been in churches where the sweet Spirit lingers.
But you've never lived till the words become true,
till forgiveness and mercy mean something to you.
And you've never cried till the tears come from faith.
And you've never lived till you have something to say.
Words are a mystery.
We say them so freely.
Some can bring heartache, and some can bring healing.
Sometimes we're broken.
Sometimes it's demanding.
Sometimes we just go through it to find understanding.
But you've never lived till the words become true,
till forgiveness and mercy mean something to you.
And you've never cried till the tears come from faith.
And you've never lived till you have something to say.
No, you've never cried till the tears come from faith.
And you've never lived till you have something to say.
This has been a sweet night,
and you have been a beautiful, beautiful audience to sing to.
And it's always good to talk with you,
and l feel much like Mark.
Sometimes it's overwhelming.
People say a lot of good, kind, wonderful things to you.
And the truth is, on the very, very best day,
when God helps us to do something good,
very, very special--
on our very, very best day,
we are still a sinner saved by grace.
lf you could see what l once l was,
if you could go with me
back to where l started from,
then l know you would see
a miracle of love that took me in its sweet embrace
and made me what l am today:
just an old sinner saved by grace.
l'm just a sinner saved by grace.
When l stood condemned to death, He took my place.
Now l live and breathe in freedom
with each breath of life l take.
Loved and forgiven, back with the living,
l'm just a sinner saved by grace.
How could l boast of anything l've ever seen or done?
How could l dare to claim as mine
the victories God has won?
Where would l be
had God not brought me gently to this place?
l'm here to say l'm nothing but
a sinner saved by grace.
l'm just a sinner saved by grace.
When l stood condemned to death, he took my place.
Now l grow and breathe in freedom
with each breath of life l take.
l'm loved and forgiven, back with the living,
l'm just a sinner saved by grace.
Now l grow and breathe in freedom
with each breath of life l take.
l'm loved and forgiven, back with the living,
oh, l'm just a sinner saved by grace,
saved by grace.
Well, God is good.
Yes, He is.
He's good all the time.
God is good.
