Please welcome the 2013-14 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player: Kevin Durant.

I come from--I come from a small county outside

of Washington, D.C., called P.G. County.

Me, my mom, my brother,

we moved so many different places growing up,

and it felt like a box.

Felt like there was no getting out.

I loved basketball so much, I loved playing it,

I just never thought that I could

make it to college, NBA, or stand up here today

in front of you guys and be a NBA MVP.

So many people believed in me when I didn't believe in myself.

So many people doubted me and motivated me

every single day to be who I am.

I fell so many times and got back up.

I've been through the toughest times with my family...

but I'm still standing.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: It was cool to see how moved people were by my speech,

but that's not what I'm here to do.

I'm in this league to win a championship.

3 years ago, we were two games away from winning the NBA title.

Last season, we lost in the Western Conference finals.

As I was walking through the tunnel, everything just kind of,

like, flashed before my eyes.

Look at Durant putting on a show...

Counted in the foul...Not too tall for Kevin Durant.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: I been second my whole life.

I was the second-best player in high school,

second pick in the NBA draft, I came second in the finals.

I'm tired of being second.

I'm not gonna settle for that.

I'm done with it.

We're looking at 64 degrees

at 98.1 FM WWLS, The Sports Animal.

If you look at it, the Thunder were

the second-best team in the NBA.

And that tells you they're not far off.

I don't know, unless there's a major addition

to the team this summer, they'll continue to be

a second-place team.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: After we'd lost, I sat at home for 3 days.

I didn't--I didn't leave the house.

Just sat there. I didn't know what to do.

I didn't know what it felt like

to not get up and go to practice.

I was expecting us to be in the finals.

I felt embarrassed, I felt like I let people down.

It was different, 'cause I was so focused and locked in on

what we were doing, but that's a part of the game, man.

I just had to reflect on the season and learn from it

and get better from it, hopefully this summer,

and let it go, to be honest.

He's ready to go tomorrow to L.A.

I know, you gotta get the house.

I don't know what to do, but you gotta get the house ready,

you gotta get a house by the gym, somewhere by UCLA,

and they're all going.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: I always enjoy coming to L.A. visiting,

so, I wanted to see how it was living, and

last summer was one of my best summers as far as working out

and, and getting better, so, I wanted to do it all over again.

You know, so we decided to go with a place in Beverly Hills.

It was quiet, and it was-- and it had a court in the back.

That's all I really needed.

I'm taking the master suite.

and he gonna take the other room.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: It's a great feeling to have

your boys here with you that you drill with.

I told you!

We never talk about wins, we never talk about losses,

we just enjoy being around each other,

and that helped me out a lot.

I shouldn't play this game if I ain't clutch now.

You put that performance up the last season.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: Charlie Bell, who I've known since

I was 8 years old,

who's been there for me ever since day one.

Cliff, you know, we played AAU ball together.

We were about 16.

Ah! Now take a leap.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: Black is what we call him, but his name is Devonte.

I met him when I was in seventh grade.

All that screaming and he down, too.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: Just having, you know, that support system around,

that just take your mind off of it.

He always wanted to play basketball. That was his thing.

He was just quiet, he didn't,

he didn't say much, he didn't hang around nobody.

He was just tall, lanky kid

walking around in the hallways.

Still the same way like he is now.

Say a little bit more than that.

Talk a little bit more trash now than he did then.

Yeah.

I remember when we 12, 13, everybody out there

18, 19, 20 years old.

Buddy on the mic just like, "Man, who's his agent?

He's 13 years old, like, who's his agent?"

And he started to bring the ball up-court,

and soon as he got past half-court,

he just letting it fly.

He stepped past half-court at 14 years old.

We told him, "That's far enough."

For all the people in his whole area, he just

uplift that whole community and all the little kids

and everybody that seen him when he was little, everybody's like,

"Yo, that's our Kevin Durant."

My fondest memory going to the draft is, he said,

"Man, I'ma have a lot of family and friends here."

I came out the hotel; it was 3 busloads of people.

He work as if he still trying to get to the NBA.

That's how hard he work.

He's still trying to get there, and he's there.

No one ever talk about stuff like this, but

I ain't know they felt that way.

It's kinda, you know, a little emotional.

Gonna block...ah!

Oh, my gosh, man.

They push me to just go enjoy myself, take a vacation,

just laugh and have fun, you know.

'Cause I'm always focused and, you're always in game mode,

is what I call it, so, you know, just be able to decompress

a little bit and enjoy your time.

It's no longer a boy's game.

Kevin Durant has to learn to do a better job of

posting up smaller guys and to do, he can shoot over anybody,

but it's hard for him to post up and back people down.

You're not winning championships

if you're shooting perimeter shots.

It's simply not happening.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: When the season ended,

everyone told me I should rest.

But I didn't want to stop.

I wanted to work harder than I've ever worked this offseason.

played for Denver for a year, then went overseas.

and shots and drills that we use.

from just playing ball all day.

That's like the most productive day I've had,

'cause that's what I love to do.

My whole day revolves around me waking up, working out,

grab something to eat, I shoot over there

and go hoop with them, go eat again,

slide over there and playing that game, and then just

getting up that next morning and going to work out.

Basketball, every day, all day. I love it.

So, you're literally done at 11:30 and then

you go on for your interviews quick and easy

only about Strong and Kind,

only about the workouts,

nothing about free agency or anything,

playoffs, anything like that, maybe Team USA.

We're having a guy that takes his time

to come to work with abused and neglected children,

foster children, we'll get 'em hope, man.

And I really believe that this experience today

is gonna change our children's lives.

Where I come from, you know, I mean, I wasn't supposed to be here.

I come from poverty, crime,

and kids just don't make it out.

You know, as a kid I was always taught that

you gotta be tough, you gotta be hard.

Yes. You're not supposed to show emotion.

But as I got older and more

secure with myself, you know,

it was cool to be different.

That's why I'm here today.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: I never thought I'd be able to impact people

the way I have so far.

I take pride in that.

I'm just a regular guy, you know?

I play ball on TV sometimes.

And knowing that I can give 'em hope and inspire 'em has been

something that's been like a dream come true.

for us to work on our explosiveness and quickness.

Course, I will never be as explosive and quick as Russell.

We're like brothers.

I'm just blessed to have somebody like that

to rely on and play with.

Used to do this when we were in high school.

all the time, me and my brother.

My mom used to be walking the steps,

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: You know, I've been with them for 6 years,

and we went through some tough times early on as a team but we

got through that and we continue to just keep growing.

And everybody who comes in look at me and Rus as the leaders.

Today, we're gonna make some big news.

In a few minutes, Kevin Durant

will join us to debut his latest signature shoe from Nike.

But did you also know that he grew up

just a few miles from here?

If you didn't, then it's time you get to know Kevin Durant.

A lot of people don't know, you grew up in this area.

You didn't have to come very far today.

Nah, yeah. I grew up not too far from here.

And it feels good to come back and release my shoe here.

I'm on my seventh shoe and it's like,

damn, I got my own tennis shoe.

We're gonna work with KD to design a shoe

that KD's gonna actually wear next year.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: It still hasn't hit me yet, to be honest.

I never would've thought that this would happen.

I walk down the street and kids are like,

And I just sit there and I'm like, wow, somebody actually

walked in and say, "I want some Kevin Durant sneakers."

Lots of excitement about Kevin Durant's

new Nike shoe the KD 7s.

It's important to know that these could potentially be

the last Kevin Durant Nikes ever made

since Durant's contract with Nike is almost over and there's

rumors that Under Armour is coming after him big-time.

Very interested in KD. We'll see what we'll see.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: I was born in Washington, D.C.

My brother, my mom, and I,

we moved with my grandma to Seat Pleasant area.

In Seat Pleasant, that's where I started

learning the game of basketball.

That's where I built the love for basketball.

How you feel about being home?

I don't know, man.

There's gonna be a lot of love down here

for you, though, broski. Everybody miss you.

I got mixed emotions, man.

You know.

I used to spend all-- you know how

we used to come back every summer,

but it got crazier and crazier,

you know what I'm saying?

It's hard--it's hard to go places

down here, dog, and just chill.

Look at all the boarded houses and shit.

Seat Pleasant was like the,

the murder capital of Maryland at one point.

So around that time it was like young ones was wilder,

but I knew all of them, though, so it was--

and if you stayed at that rec,

that joint was like a safe haven.

The rec center.

I'd go there after school.

I'd spend most of my time there.

I used to catch the subway up there.

I usually--

my first haircut ever was in this barbershop.

So this is where we'll be hooping it up here today.

They gonna show some of this love.

They might, you know, there's gonna be some hecklers

and some dudes that's gonna try to get me riled up.

Got the NBA MVP in the building, too!

I feel like no matter what you do, like,

it's just making it to the league,

you feel like you're a hero for a bunch of these people.

when I got drafted, 18 years old.

I went from living in a two-bedroom apartment,

sleeping in twin beds with my 6'9", 6'7" brothers,

to being in the NBA.

just to see the progress,

you know, of myself, as a man, as a player,

as a businessman.

I'm excited about the future.

I just gotta keep working.

These are things that are critical to KD.

Number one, he has to have a passion for the brand.

And we need to create consistency

throughout all of his partners moving forward.

So, Kevin Durant is the best basketball player

in the world.

He's an original, once-in-a-lifetime player.

He possesses an unbridled passion for the game

and a commitment to be the best

and winning championships.

Off the court, he's professional, grounded,

humble, and giving.

This is who this guy is.

This is just the beginning, you know.

have reportedly met with Pau Gasol today

in Los Angeles.

Gasol would give OKC a much needed inside presence.

Carmelo Anthony will be returning, of course,

to the New York Knicks,

and Pau Gasol will sign a deal to join Derrick Rose

as a member of the Chicago Bulls.

Oh, my gosh, man!

It was just kind of like, I wouldn't say, like,

a stab in the chest, but it was, you know?

I wanted him to play for us.

I wanted him to be a part of it.

I felt that he can help us, you know,

get over the top on me winning a championship.

But it happens in this league.

We miss out on players every year.

Teams miss out on guys every year.

But you want your leaders to step up,

and that's what I have to do.

He has to do more.

It's hard to think of Kevin Durant and think,

"Yeah, that guy needs to expand his game."

But, yeah, he has to.

Because, you know what, they didn't get a Pau Gasol.

So, Durant's game has to evolve, and if that happens,

I think they're very capable of winning an NBA title.

What's been up?

Nothing. How's the summer going so far?

It's quick, man.

Summer's halfway done, almost.

Yeah, then--we got USA Basketball this summer,

too, so it should be fun,

but, you know, it took away half my summer.

20 of the top players in the country

are headed to Las Vegas, Nevada,

to start a month-long training camp

before heading to Spain to defend their title.

But without NBA's elite players like LeBron James, Chris Paul,

and Carmelo Anthony on the roster,

this World Cup will be extremely challenging

for team USA.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: So it's been like a 6-year process for me,

just being there every summer working with the USA team.

It was always a goal of mine, is to win a gold medal.

Constantly putting work with that in the back of my mind,

where I wanted to play for my country.

New guys is coming in, rising stars in this league,

so, you know, this is a big pool of players

that they always choose each and every summer.

Say, "My name is Kevin Durant,

"and I'm a proud member

of USA Basketball."

it's short when you look at it

in the grand scheme of things.

Pau Gasol to Oklahoma City?

Obviously, not that close.

But, I mean, I did my work.

It was my first time recruiting a guy,

but it didn't pan out, you know.

It's kind of tough to sell guys

on, you know, Oklahoma City.

Chicago/Oklahoma City/L.A.

But we live in...

if they come to Oklahoma City and see the love

that they get there, guys would be, like,

"We want to come," but...

Obviously for you,

you're satisfied where you are in Oklahoma City,

but there's always talk about a guy in his hometown.

Kind of give us a comment on that.

DURANT, VOICE-OVER: Paul was struggling a little bit

in that game with his shots, so, you know, guys like that,

when you're struggling, you just try to do anything

to pick your game up, whether it's get a steal

or a block, assist, a rebound,

something to get you going.

And that's what he tried to do with James.

And it was just a freak accident.

His leg hit the stanchion perfectly

in order for it to break.

Paul George shaken up.

Ran into the stanchion.

You know, I couldn't see,

so I was just like, "What's going on?"

You know, DeMarcus Cousins was just like,

"He just broke his leg."

And the first thing that went through my mind was, like,

"Damn. He can't play no more."

This is the most important thing right now,

is making sure that these guys stay healthy.

for my camps.

"I want to enjoy the rest of my summer.

that reigning MVP Kevin Durant

has been diagnosed with a stress fracture

in his right foot.

of an aching in his right foot.

He's starting to show signs of this.
