Skis have gone from being an aid to being an art form of sorts.

Everything has become extremely specialized.

It's always about coming up with something new, set new trends and -

- really push it.

When I first started, -

- the terrain park was a snowboard only terrain.

You weren't really allowed to go in with skis.

But I did it, said "screw them, i'm going in too".

I went in and tried to ski on all those same features.

I remember when I grew up, there was -

- more rivalry between the snowboarders and skiers.

But that's gone now. Now it's just a bunch of people having fun together.

You can have fun, whatever you're on.

But...

If you have the opportunity, it's...

It's more fun to stand sideways.

It's crazy stuff now with freeskiing in the Olympics, slopestyle and half-pipe...

And that side ofthings is amazing and I Iove being part of competition, but -

- to me the true beauty of freeskiing is in the film aspect.

You really see the creativity, how amazing of a sport it is.

I was always freeriding...

Never did downhill or trained in any way.

I always just did it the way I like, growing up.

It's over 20 years since I started skiing.

I remember the Lillehammer olympics. I dreamed of being a apline skier.

Back then here was nothing called twin-tip skis.

So it 's pretty crazy to think about what's happened to the sport since.

I reckon my luck quota has refilled in five years.

So it's good to know that we're safe on the boat.

How do you feel about snowboarding with the Norwegian ski boys?

It'll be good, they usually don't use the same lines.

They may have seen some snowboard movies, so they know how to do it.

So rude.

The cool thing about snowboarding is that you control it yourself.

You're in charge.

It's just "Where can I have the most fun?" l want to hit as many banks as I can.

And jumps and so on.

It was a perfect day -

After two quiet warm-up runs, we were going to do some lines.

Further down l was going to brake and I hit a big rock.

-It felt as if my ankle exploded. -So no more lines, or what?

Not right now, no. But...

I envy the other guys now, to say the least.

So much can go wrong, so with small injuries itjust feels like a relief.

We were 4 people the last time.

50 percent were injured quite a long time after that. So -

-the effort wasn't the problem. Now it's more about conditions.

I'm terribly excited about revisiting that line.

Andreas has done it for years, and Tim who we'll meet there grew up in Alaska -

- and has only been doing big mountains his whole life, so we'll be able to Iearn.

Fortunately, we have a nice car that will get us there.

We go in and immediately find a vantage point, sit the machine down.

So you can take your time, spot what you want and we make a plan for the camera.

We're actually surrounded by both large and small lines.

The only limit is how much you can manage to do.

It's very convenient, you don't have to go far for snow. Nice lump.

Down the well-known east side, it's wonderful.

Just done with a perfect hike, maybe 30-40 vertical meters.

Pretty wild place. When we arrived it looked completely empty.

But when we pulled out the skis, peopIe came outside, so some live here.

Russians and people from Ukraine.

There are many crazy abandoned buildings -

- making it convenient to ski on.

It's a Russian part of Svalbard. You think Svalbard is Norwegian, but -

- nobody understands Norwegian, almost no English either.

You rarely see boats or environments like this in Sweden or Norway.

We are in Norway.

Ifwe're not there for dinner, we don't get any food.

Had to go back and take a break.

We got cabbage soup and some other stuff.

We've been here before actually, almost exactly a year ago.

Me, Eirik Finseth and Eric Hjorleifson went hiking.

Eric Hjorleifson from Canada, a guy I've seen in lots ofvideos, fantastic.

As a mountaineer, reading terrain, snow conditions, and skiing.

Everything's in order, but that's easy to say from down here.

It's impressive to see Aksel come out here -

Last year we borrowed a boat here from a local.

But it was a little unnecessarily when we didn't sail, so -

- we borrowed the pier and hung out. He's been even cooler this year.

That's his brother's house. He chased out his brother, and let us borrow the house.

You just have to bow down to that kind of service.

Sunrise in Lyngen, Thorsen has seen it before, so he's not impressed.

But I think it's nice.

-Out and about again. -Yeah, out and about.

When we got to Lyngen, we knew that there was more snow than last year.

I also heard talk about large avalanches, but -

- with clever people behind the safety decisions, l just expected -

- better skiing than the last time, because the conditions were better.

The snow is good here.

Good to land in after high jumps, and hard to walk in.

But it's firm and reliable. So it'll be fine.

It's pretty sweet, even if it's a long way up, you can take a breather and -

-just look at that. It beats looking at Åsmund's ass all day.

Looking forward to the descent here. It's like a dream.

My first thought was the line on Jægervassting that scared me last year

It has a dangerous drop zone, you get more than abrasions if you fall there.

- it's kind of where I learned to ski, so it's good to be back in my home land

We're preparing for the trip. We'Il be flying up the valley -

Then we'll see here, across the border from Alaska to Br. Columbia in Canada.

We'll fly up and watch, take pictures, and get ready for the next days.

It's great, very challenging, but so much fun.

Our guide lives in the wilderness in a 100 year old log cabin.

We also have to consider the snow conditions, we don't know how it'll be.

Snow conditions are difficult now, people face all sorts ofweather.

Avalanches go all the way to the bottom, -

-while other places, the snow is hard and crusty, so it's special.

We have to check the snow conditions after the last storm.

Everyone is skeptical, so it makes it even more exciting.

We have to seize this opportunity with the 3 days we have left -

- in this insane terrain, where we're the first on skis.
