We're in a neighborhood that got hit very hard by Katrina.

There's several abandoned apartment buildings over here.

A lot of these apartment buildings are havens for people

who do other serious crimes.

>> We have a mixture of hispanics and blacks

living in this area here.

because there was a lot of work here.

Sometimes they're referred to as walking ATMs

because they get paid cash and they're easy targets.

>> People in this neighborhood

are a little bit reluctant to call

partially because they don't speak english,

because some of them are undocumented.

>> We're working as hard as we can to set up a relationship

with these people to make it easier for them

to reach out to the police.

and until people decide that human beings

and the human life is worth more than a gunshot.

We got to get them to the hospital quick,

try and establish where the actual incident took place.

I try to do that when a lot of things

are going on at the same time.

I can tell you they were down here when they got shot,

not up there,

because you would see the blood trail going this way.

This is a mixed community.

There's people doing all kinds of bad things,

but there's also a lot of good people in this community.

I think that these guys were good people,

just working hard and somehow got unlucky.

It's just sad.

We do have a witness who says he saw everything.

and we're trying to find out everything we can.

Two suspects came up on these guys,

asked for their passports, their money.

They give them what they want, and they still shoot them.

Well, now that changes everything.

These guys are now wanted for murder.

Damn, that pisses me off, Johnny.

>> These guys could be anywhere.

All of our units are looking for the suspects

in a blue Blazer.

We're gonna call it a night.

>> We're down here in St. Bernard

where, during Katrina, St. Bernard got leveled.

Water was 12 feet high down here.

Think about that.

3 1/2 years after the storm,

people are still trying to rebuild.

It's very expensive, very difficult.

There's a wonderful charitable organization

called the St. Bernard project

that's gathering folks to rebuild homes, help them.

Johnny and I are gonna meet them over at this house

and see if we can lend a hand.

>> No, we left the day before.

>> Never dreaming once that you would be faced with this?

>> No, we thought maybe we'd get a couple feet.

We didn't think we were gonna get eight feet

of water in the house.

>> When we came back to the house,

in our hearts, we knew that it was gone.

There was no more.

I pulled my mom's hope chest out,

and when I pulled it out, it crumbled in my hands,

and that's when I knew if that was gone,

that meant everything.

>> All our pictures.

>> Little handprints and--

>> Before the storm, our house was family central,

and that's what we're hoping to get back.

>> To us, it wasn't just a brick building.

To us, it was a heart.

>> It's a classic example of what we're seeing everywhere,

nice salt-of-the-earth people

who've worked hard their whole lives

to have a nice little house and it gets taken away.

>> This is what FEMA gave us to live in after the storm.

We had four people living in here 3 1/2 years.

We stuck pictures up.

My granddaughters, they're in Florida.

We don't get to see them anymore.

They'll come back.

a aggravated battery by shooting.

one of the victims died at the hospital.

The suspects were two unknown black males,

both approximately 5'6" to 5'10".

They fled in a blue Chevrolet Blazer.

>> Unfortunately, the suspects are still at large,

and my team would really love it more than anything

to get those guys.

We really want to find them.

>> I got it from my uncle.

>> We found a gun in the car,

but he was just under the legal age for possession.

>> The reason you had that weapon was for self-protection?

>> At 12, my father got killed on the sidewalk.

I felt I had to protect myself or something.

>> Oh, so you bought it for personal protection?

>> Yeah. I work every day, sir.

>> Down here in the south, a lot of people carry guns,

and a lot of them are carrying legally--I'm all for that.

I just want people who are carrying firearms

to use them legally and responsibly.

>> I ain't tripping me, son. I'm gonna take my lick.

>> I'm not exactly sure what charge I'm gonna go with,

but if it is a misdemeanor, there's always a possibility

that they can cut you a summons.

>> You don't even go to jail.

>> He's probably gonna have to seize that weapon.

>> You ain't tripping about that, right?

>> I ain't even worrying about that.

You know, you my grandma's favorite actor.

>> Now, I'm hoping you ain't got no priors, man.

You got a misdemeanor. You got nothing, baby.

>> Does he have any convictions--felony convictions?

>> Negative, sir.

Nothing at all on any three of them, and the weapon's good.

Get them up. Get them out their handcuffs.

>> The kid says he got the gun from his uncle.

The gun came back clean, it wasn't used in a crime,

and it wasn't reported stolen.

>> We're gonna clear him and let him go.

>> You're not old enough to legally possess that firearm,

so to save everybody a lot of heartache,

you a lot of trouble,

we're gonna take the gun.

>> He's just a couple months shy of being legal.

he's a hardworking guy with no record,

so we're gonna confiscate the gun.

We're happy we got a gun off the street

without ruining his future.

>> We're heading back over to the crime scene from last night

where two guys got shot.

Somebody just called and said they saw the shooter.

Let's get up.

>> That area's where we had the double shooting

and the homicide.

We're gonna try to talk to the complaint

to see if actually the suspect

might still be in the neighborhood.

>> He saw somebody walk outside.

He was walking outside.

>> Is that the one who shot?

Did somebody see that guy who shot here?

>> I don't know, maybe. I'm not sure.

We didn't really get much information.

>> They might be scared, you know?

that doesn't belong in the neighborhood,

they just call the police,

And that's what we're here for.

>> The good news is that they're calling us,

because to be able to talk to somebody like that

is gonna be essential in solving the crime.

>> There's a large hispanic population in the area.

Three of their occupants got robbed.

Two of them got shot, and one of them died.

And now their friends and family are scared.

So whenever they see anybody who they believe remotely fits

the description of the guy who did the murder,

they call us.

>> It may take a long time to solve this murder.

It's in the hands of the detectives now.

I just hope they get a break soon.

We're headed over to a housewarming party

at the Ansardis',

and the house is finally finished, and this is gonna be

the first family gathering since the storm.

It's so nice to see the Ansardis,

who've really been resilient

and bounced back with a lot of love.

Many other families with the same situation

all really bounced back, and it's a wonder

to see them all do that

and a pleasure to see them do that.

Well, I heard you all were still having some trouble

with the yard, so we brought a little something

to put in the yard now.

>> What?

>> Oh, look at this.

>> Some roses. >> Got a rose bush for you.

>> Oh, yes. >> Some junipers.

>> A little evergreen here.

>> Look at this.

Rose bushes are perfect, too,

because we had 50 rose bushes back here,

and that's the only one that survived.

They had built the house in '63.

He planted it the day he moved in in '63.

>> I'm gonna see about planting this next to that plant

that's been there since 1963.

That was the beginning. This is the new beginning.
