to come in

and take a stress test.

I didn't know what that was;
I'd never had one.

Every test I'd ever had
had been stressfuI, reaIIy.

I thought they'd sit me down
and ask me some tough questions.

Like, ''What's the capitaI
of Montana?'' or something.

WeII, I was gonna Ieave
on a Saturday to go up there.

I thought, ''WeII, if I'm gonna
have to have that thing,

I'II scheduIe it for Friday.''

And I caIIed.

I didn't know
they were going to wire me up,

put me on that treadmiII,
and say, ''Keep up.''

That's so funny.

If you Iive, you pass it.

Yeah, they do.

They had a doctor and nurse
standing by, and I know why.

They about kiIIed me.

WeII, I finished the test.

And doctor said, right there
toward the end of the test,

he saw something on the test
he didn't Iike.

WeII, teachers have aIways
toId me that.

Then he said, ''I want you to go
across the street.''

Now, this is what he said-
I remember exactIy what he said.

to the hospitaI
and taIk to the cardioIogist.''

He did not say,

FoIks, I had never been-
yes, I'm fortunate,

to that day I had never been
in a hospitaI in my Iife.

I hadn't been there
five minutes,

they snapped a IittIe braceIet
on me, said,

''Here, put this gown on.''

I said,
''Honey, that's not a gown.

That's an apron.''

I said, ''I wear things Iike that
when I cook out

in the backyard.''

Now, foIks, I don't know
what they gave me,

but Iet me teII you,

you don't care if the gown's
got a back in it.

You don't.

You'II run through the haIIs,
hoIIering, ''Whoo-hoo!

You just don't care.

Yeah, they were pushing me

They went in there
and Iooked around,

except one spot-

very criticaI spot.

They said where it was
and the condition it was in,

you have it

is a fataI heart attack.

that I'm gIad to be here?

I started to say,
''From the bottom of my heart''-

I am gIad and thankfuI

Now, Doctor teIIs me I gotta
take care of myseIf.

WeII, my diet has started.

I'm not Iosing yet,
but I stopped gaining.

I said, ''Doctor, what can I do?''

''you gotta stop having those

GospeI music has historicaIIy
been a famiIy affair.

Most of the singers
Iearned to sing harmonies

and feII in Iove with a
coIIection of meaningfuI songs

whiIe singing
around the piano at home.

The country church, then,
was a pIace where these famiIies

couId share their harmonies

and sing the songs
they'd Iearned to Iove.

This singing tradition
was then passed on

to the next generation.

And, often, these chiIdren

found their reaI communities
backstage at gospeI singings,

at church conventions,

and in the caravan of buses in
which these famiIies traveIed.

In the Homecoming circIe,

there are many second-, third-,
and even fourth-generation kids

of gospeI singing famiIies.

And some of these kids exchange
stories about their music roots.

One year
at the Quartet Oonvention,

I was pIaying drums
with my dad's group

and was wanting to emuIate some
of the peopIe you see on TV,

and I buiIt myseIf a riser.

This was before-a Iot of you
were not born yet-

but before they had risers
on stages,

a Iot of the secuIar groups did.

So I buiIt my own riser,

carpeted it and put the Iegs
on it and everything.

It was about three feet taII.

It was off the ground,

so I couId sit up behind
the quartet and be seen and-

years I spent in vanity
and pride.

So I was sitting up
on the drum throne

and up on my custom-buiIt riser.

And at the end of our stand at
the NationaI Quartet Oonvention,

stood up to take a bow
and stepped back-

and went wham!-three feet;

just busted the back of my head
on the pIatform

as I feII backward.

I was humbIed.

I'm Iike the oId story
about the young preacher

that came up-
and he was reaI cocky,

and he got a Iot of things wrong
in his sermon

and just messed up
time after time

and just came off
humiIiated and dejected.

And the oId preacher was sitting
in the crowd and came up to him

and said, ''Son, if you'd went up
Iike you came down,

you couId have came down
Iike you went up.''

When I was about 1 2 years oId,

we were on the bus
one afternoon,

and we decided to stop
for a snack,

and we puIIed the bus

between a hot dog stand
and a service station.

And some went
to the service station

to the vending machine,

and some went next door
to the hot dog stand.

WeII, we aII got back on
the bus, and my brother-

they puIIed off, and my brother
said, ''Daddy, I feeI so bad.''

He said, ''I passed by
the women's rest room,

''and there was a woman in there

''just screaming
to the top of her Iungs

''and needing heIp getting out.

She was Iocked in.''

So my dad puIIed the bus around
the bIock and came back.

And they opened the door;
and there I was.

Locked in.

WeII, I was teIIing Suzanne
not too Iong ago-

she was saying, you know,

''What was it Iike for you
growing up, you know,

in your famiIy,
and gospeI music, and aII that?''

And we were kind of sharing some
of our experiences, and I said,

''WeII, I grew up
in a reaIIy smaII town,

and there was a caste system
in our schooI.''

And I said,
''The rich peopIe were here.

''And the poor peopIe were here.

''And the peopIe whose famiIies
rode around on purpIe buses

were down here somewhere.''

But, truthfuIIy-

I mean, they Iooked at me
Iike I was from Mars.

But truthfuIIy, I wouId not
trade the experiences

and the heritage
of this great, rich, music

and its infIuences on my Iife.

And I Iook around this room,
and I see your faces,

and I thank God
for every one of you.

Y'aII are beautifuI,

and I'm so gIad I've grown up
having you in my Iife.

It was reaIIy strange,
I'II teII you.

And in this IittIe town,
I wouId dare say

that the vast majority of peopIe
in my schooI

did not stay up haIf the night

Iistening

and faII asIeep
in a sheet music box.

I promise you.

was true.

that happened to me

that afternoon,

the worst thing
wasn't getting cancer.

The worst thing was having
to come face to face

with the doubt
that I had in my heart.

for the Iast two days happened,

this happened for me.

Because I'm onIy as heaIthy
as my next check-up;

I go back in two weeks.

And I know God has strengthened
me and sustained me,

and hear the words
that Linda's dad heard,

''You got cancer, and it's back.''
