MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO,

THESE ROCKS WERE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA.

IN THE 1970s, AMERICAN GEOLOGIST WALTER ALVAREZ

WAS STUDYING THESE LIMESTONE LAYERS,

ANALYZING FOSSILS LEFT BY TINY, SHELLED SEA CREATURES.

CALLED FORAMINIFERA, OR FORAMS FOR SHORT,

THEY’RE AMONG THE MOST COMMON OCEAN PLANKTON.

WHEN THEY DIE, THEIR SHELLS BECOME PART OF THE SEDIMENT

AND CAN BE USED AS MARKERS OF GEOLOGIC TIME.

BUT ALVAREZ SAW SOMETHING STRIKING.

THEY SEEMED TO DISAPPEAR AT THIS MYSTERIOUS LINE OF CLAY.

IN THE TOP LAYER OF LIMESTONE, THERE WERE FAIRLY LARGE FORAMS.

THEN THERE’S THIS CLAY LAYER.

AND ABOVE IT, IN THIS LIMESTONE LAYER,

ALMOST ALL OF THOSE FORAMS ARE GONE.

AND I THINK THAT SORT OF WOKE ME UP,

WE’RE TALKING ABOUT LOSS OF 25% OF THE FISH SPECIES IN THE SEA

THAT DEPEND ON CORAL REEFS.

WE’RE TALKING ABOUT LOSS OF 10% OF THE OCEAN’S FISHERIES

THAT WE DEPEND UPON.

THAT IF WE WERE ABLE TO CALCULATE EXTINCTION RATES

OVER HUMAN HISTORY OF THE PAST FEW CENTURIES

IN THE SAME WAY WE CALCULATED EXTINCTION RATES

IN THE DEEP-TIME PALEONTOLOGICAL RECORD,

THAT IT MIGHT NOT LOOK SO BAD.

I WAS TOTALLY WRONG.

ONCE WE CRUNCHED THE NUMBERS,

IT TURNED OUT WE REALLY WERE SEEING

HUGELY ACCELERATED EXTINCTION RATES TODAY.

Narrator: IN FACT, AT LEAST 12 TIMES FASTER

THAN SPECIES NORMALLY DIE OFF.

TODAY, A QUARTER OF ALL MAMMAL

AND ONE FIFTH OF FISH AND REPTILE SPECIES

ARE THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION.

AMPHIBIANS ARE VANISHING EVEN FASTER.

Barnosky: IF WE CONTINUE TO LOSE SPECIES

AT THE RATE WE’VE LOST THEM OVER THE LAST CENTURY,

WITHIN AS LITTLE AS 200 YEARS,

WE WOULD SEE 75% OF SPECIES WE KNOW ABOUT

DISAPPEARING FROM THE PLANET FOREVER.

IF WE CONTINUE DOING THINGS

PRETTY MUCH AS WE ARE DOING THEM TODAY,

WHAT THAT MEANS IS THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION

IS A VIRTUAL CERTAINTY.

Carroll: I THINK THE HARDEST QUESTION TO ANSWER

IS WHAT DO WE DO?

PARTICULARLY WHAT DO WE DO AS INDIVIDUALS? WHAT CAN WE DO?

WELL, ONE THING WE KNOW THAT WORKS ARE RESERVES.

SET ASIDE A LARGE ENOUGH SPACE OF INTACT ECOSYSTEMS,

AND ANIMALS CAN THRIVE THERE.

SO WE AT LEAST HAVE TO DO THAT.

TO CONNECT WILDLIFE HABITATS WITH LAND CORRIDORS

SO ANIMALS CAN MOVE FREELY.

ONE CORRIDOR BEING PROPOSED

WOULD RUN FROM ALASKA TO THE YUCATAN,

AND INCLUDES YELLOWSTONE.

Barnosky: I JUST THINK IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT

FOR PEOPLE TO REALIZE THAT THIS ISN’T A LOST CAUSE.

HUMANITY IS AT A CROSSROADS RIGHT NOW.

WE CAN EITHER CHOOSE TO KEEP ENDANGERED SPECIES ALIVE

AND AVOID THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION,

OR WE CAN WATCH THE TRAIN WRECK HAPPEN.

WE HAVE A VERY NARROW WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO FIX THIS.

WILL WE DO THAT?

I LIKE TO THINK WE WILL.

Carroll: THIS IS THE AGE OF MAMMALS,

AND WE DON’T WANT IT TO END LIKE THE AGE OF DINOSAURS,

PARTICULARLY AT OUR OWN HANDS.

WE DON’T WANT SORT OF THE EQUIVALENT

OF T. REX OF YESTERDAY,

THE GRIZZLY BEARS OF NORTH AMERICA,

OR THE LIONS OF AFRICA, OR THE TIGERS OF ASIA,

TO DISAPPEAR ONLY TO BE SEEN AS STUFFED ANIMALS IN A MUSEUM.

SO THE QUESTION IS CAN WE--

BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND WHAT’S GOING ON--

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?
