We`re here in the chapel

at the Billy Graham Training Oenter

at the Oove in North Oarolina, Asheville, North Oarolina.

lt`s reminiscent of some of the early churches

back in the early 1 900s.

And today, you`re going to hear

some of the greatest singing that you have ever heard.

And this is the kind of place to do it in.

Listen as they sing.

Years l spent in vanity and pride

caring not my Lord was crucified,

knowing not it was for me He died

on Oalvary.

Mercy there was great, and grace was free.

Pardon there was multiplied to me.

There my burdened soul found liberty

at Oalvary.

By God`s word, at last my sin l learned.

Then l trembled at the law l`d spurned

till my guilty soul imploring turned

to Oalvary.

Mercy there was great, and grace was free.

Pardon there was multiplied to me.

There my burdened soul found liberty

at Oalvary.

Now l give to Jesus everything.

Now l gladly own Him as my King.

Now my raptured soul can only sing

of Oalvary.

Mercy there was great, and grace was free.

Pardon there was multiplied to me.

There my burdened soul found liberty

at Oalvary.

Oh, the love that drew salvation`s plan,

oh, the grace that brought it down to man.

Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span

at Oalvary.

Now sing the chorus.

Mercy there was great, and grace was free.

Pardon there was multiplied to me.

There my burdened soul found liberty

at Oalvary.

The problems of the world are overwhelming:

hunger, poverty, abuse, chemical addiction, homelessness, war.

lt`s easy to feel helpless to affect such needs.

But each of us can touch one life.

We can share what we have with one family.

We can take on an extra child or young person

who needs a friend or a place to belong.

We can be kind instead of ugly in the traffic

on our way home from work tonight.

We can make one room beautiful.

We can live at peace with our neighbors

on each side of our house.

We can choose not to react in anger

in one difficult situation.

And if all of us do what we know to do,

this world will go to bed a little bit more loved tonight.

Each day l`ll do a golden deed.

By helping those who are in need.

My life on earth is but a span,

and so l`ll do the best l can.

Life`s evening sun is sinking low.

A few more days, and l must go

to meet the deeds that l have done,

where there will be no setting sun.

The only life that will endure

is one that`s kind and good and pure.

And so for God l`ll take my stand.

Each day, l`ll lend a helping hand.

Life`s evening sun is sinking low.

A few more days, and l must go

to meet the deeds that l have done,

where there will be no setting sun,

where there will be no setting sun.

We read and heard the story

in the blessed old Book,

how the walls of Jericho the people marched round.

And when that trumpet sounded, how the mighty walls shook.

Walls around the city came a-tumblin` down.

The Lord delivered Daniel from the hungry lion`s den.

He rolled the waters back before old Moses and his men.

He led His people out of Egypt`s bondage and its sin.

The Lord, He calmed the ocean

and the mighty winds that blew.

He saved the Hebrew children from the fiery furnace too.

He rose up from the grave

just like the prophets said He`d do.

He never will forsake us.

Matters not what may come.

Safely He will lead His faithful children on home.

The Lord has raised the dead

and caused the blind men to see.

He cleansed the lepers` spots

and turned the water to wine.

The Lord is just the same today

and ever will be.

There`s no other power like the Savior divine.

The Lord delivered Daniel from the hungry lion`s den.

He rolled the waters back before old Moses and his men.

He led His people out of Egypt`s bondage and its sin.

The Lord-

He calmed the ocean and the mighty winds that blew.

He saved the Hebrew children from the fiery furnace too.

He rose up from the grave

just like the prophets said He`d do.

He never will forsake us.

Matters not what may come.

Safely He will lead His faithful children on home.

Safely He will lead His faithful children on home.

Safely He will lead His faithful children on home.

You know, l had the privilege one time

of meeting Albert E. Brumley, probably in his 80s.

And l met him at an airport in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

What a good man.

He wrote a lot of songs

that some people might call sentimental,

maybe a little bit soft, maybe nostalgic.

But to him, it was reality.

They were songs about being kind to your neighbor,

being considerate, generous to your fellow man.

This particular song,

``l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian,``

really depicts Albert`s philosophy of life

probably better than any of them.

Listen as we sing it.

Listen as we sing it.

ln this world, l`ve tried most everything,

and l`m happy now to say

there is nothing like salvation in the good old-fashioned way.

l`m walking in the old-time way, and l want the world to know

that l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

There`s nothing like an old-time Ohristian

with a Ohristian love to show.

l`m walking in the grand old highway,

and l`m tellin` everywhere l go

that l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

All the world is bright since l got back.

Now l sing and pray and shout.

All my burdens have been lifted since the Savior brought me out.

l will tell the world both far and near

as l travel here below

that l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

There`s nothing like an old-time Ohristian

with a Ohristian love to show.

l`m walking in the grand old highway,

and l`m tellin` everywhere l go

that l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

There`s nothing like an old-time Ohristian

with a Ohristian love to show.

l`m walking in the grand old highway,

and l`m tellin` everywhere l go

that l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

that l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

l`d rather be an old-time Ohristian

than anything l know.

While strolling through the fields of time,

there are many things to see.

But nature is the greatest sight

that there could ever be.

The greatest of them all to me

is how the world was formed

and why the roses have to live-

Each day among the thorns.

One day among a world of thorns,

a rose began to grow.

lt was the greatest gift of God

this world will ever know.

lt was the will of God to show

that since the world was formed

there had to be a rose to live and die among the thorns.

Along the road to Jericho, a man was left to die.

There like a petal from a rose, two men had passed him by.

A neighbor and a friend came by

and saw his lifeless form.

With love, he took good care of him-

A rose among the thorns.

One day, among a world of thorns,

a rose began to grow.

lt was the greatest gift of God

this world will ever know.

lt was the will of God to show

that since the world was formed

there had to be a rose to live and die among the thorns.

2,000 years will soon be gone since God looked down in love.

There in the town of Bethlehem, a rose began to bud.

lt lived to bloom until one day was crushed with awful frown.

But then in love from God above-

Was moved to higher ground.

One day among a world of thorns

a rose began to grow.

lt was the greatest gift of God

this world will ever know.

lt was the will of God to show

that since the world was formed

there had to be a rose to live and die among the thorns.

There had to be a rose to live and die among the thorns.

Oliff-Oliff Barrows just slipped in there in back.

Stand up, Oliff.

Let everybody see you, okay?

When God shut Noah in the grand old ark,

He put a rainbow in the cloud.

When the thunders rolled and the sky was dark,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

When it looked like the sun wouldn`t shine anymore,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

Well, away down yonder in Egypt`s sand,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

Just to lead His children to the Promised Land,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

When it looked like the sun wouldn`t shine anymore,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

When they put old Daniel in the lion`s den-

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

Just to prove His promise to the sons of men-

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

When it looked like the sun wouldn`t shine anymore,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

When it looked like the sun wouldn`t shine anymore,

God put a rainbow in the cloud.

lt was the dream of Annie Johnson Flint

to be a concert pianist,

and it looked as if that`s exactly where she was headed,

until in her late 20s,

she was diagnosed with crippling arthritis.

Her hands began to twist and gnarl,

and she could not play the piano.

And eventually, at the end of her life,

she was less than 4 feet tall.

But she continued to write the praises of God

her whole life.

The very last song that Annie Johnson Flint wrote

was one that she paid dearly to write.

By now, her hands were so gnarled,

they had to wedge a piece of Orayola or chalk

between her fingers so she could write.

And there was a board rigged up above her bed

to which they tacked paper.

And in these circumstances, with these gnarled hands,

she wrote these words:

``God has not promised skies always blue,

``flower-strewn pathways all my life through.

``God has not promised sun without rain,

``joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

``But He has promised strength for the day,

light for the journey, joy for my way.``

Writers always write out of their experience.

And this next song is probably the best-known song

that Annie Johnson Flint has left.

lt`s in many of our hymnals:

``He Giveth More Grace.``

Listen.

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater.

He sendeth more strength when the labors increase.

To added affliction, He addeth His mercy,

to multiplied trials His multiplied peace.

His love has no limit.

His grace has no measure.

His power has no boundary known unto men,

for out of His infinite riches in Jesus,

He giveth and giveth and giveth again.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,

when our strength has failed ere the day is half done,

when we reach the end of our hoarded resources,

our Father`s full giving is only begun.

His love has no limit.

His grace has no measure.

His power has no boundary known unto men,

for out of His infinite riches in Jesus,

He giveth and giveth and giveth again.

Grace, grace, God`s grace,

grace that will pardon and cleanse within.

Grace, grace, God`s grace,

grace that is greater than all our sin.

What can wash away my sin?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

What can make me whole again?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

No other fount l know,

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Buddy, play a verse.

Do another chorus again, okay?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon-

This l see:

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my cleansing, this my plea:

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

No other fount l know,

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Naught of good that l have done.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow.

No other fount l know,

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

l am a poor wayfaring stranger

traveling through this world of woe.

Yet there`s no sickness, toil, or danger

in that bright land to which l go.

l`m going there to see my Father.

l`m going there no more to roam.

l`m just going over Jordan.

l`m only going over home.

l know dark clouds will gather o`er me.

l know my way is rough and steep.

Yet beauteous fields lay just before me,

where God`s redeemed their vigils keep.

l`m going there to see my mother.

She said she`d meet me when l come.

l`m only going over Jordan.

l`m only going over home.

l`m only going over Jordan.

l`m only going over home.

l have found His grace is all complete.

He supplieth every need.

While l sit and learn at Jesus` feet,

l am free, yes, free indeed.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

l have found the pleasure l once craved.

lt is joy and peace within.

What a wondrous blessing.

l am saved from the awful gulf of sin.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

l have found that hope so bright and clear

living in the realm of grace.

Oh, the Savior`s presence is so near.

l can see His smiling face.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

l have found the joy no tongue can tell,

how its waves of glory roll.

lt is like a great o`erflowing well,

springing up within my soul.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory,

full of glory, full of glory.

lt is joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

Oh, the half has never yet been told.

When l was a kid,

l remember hearing the old saints talking

about what they called a passion for soul winning.

ln our church, we had slogans like, ``Each one reach one.``

And we had pack-a-pew Sunday.

And they thought it was important

to make sure our neighbors heard

what they call the story of salvation.

l thought this was a bit strange at the time,

but l know that when l`m excited about anything,

l want my friends to know about it, too,

from the best Mexican restaurant in town

to the greatest vacation spot

to the best book l`ve read lately.

And l`m coming to realize that if my journey with God

is truly life for me at its deepest level,

l`m gonna want my friends that l care about most

to know about this kind of life too.

Maybe it wasn`t so strange after all-

for those who cared about me to want to make sure

l went to the best place they`d ever heard of.

After all, they knew this wasn`t just hype.

This really would be heaven.

Well, l once was lost in sin,

but Jesus took me in.

And then a little light from heaven filled my soul.

lt bathed my heart in love and wrote my name above.

And just a little talk with Jesus made me whole.

Now, let us-

Have a little talk with Jesus.

Let us-

Tell Him all about our troubles.

He will-

Hear our faintest cry.

And He will-

Answer by and by.

Now, when you-

Feel a little prayer wheel turnin`-

And you-

Know a little fire is burnin`-

You will-

Find a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Well, l may have my doubts and my fears.

My eyes may be filled with many tears.

Oh, but Jesus is my friend, and He watches day and night.

Well, l go to Him in prayer.

He knows my every care.

And just that little talk with my Jesus,

oh, it makes it all right.

Now, let us-

Have a little talk with Jesus.

Let us-

Tell Him all about our troubles.

He will-

Hear our faintest cry.

And He will-

Answer by and by.

Now, when you-

Feel a little prayer wheel turnin`-

And you-

Know a little fire is burnin`-

You will-

Find a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Well, all right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

Oh, just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

l said it`s all right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

Oh, just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Whoa, whoo-hoo.

lt`s all right.

All right, all right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

And it`s all right.

lt`s all right.

Oh, Lord, it`s all right.

You`re more than all right with me, Jesus.

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Don`t you know

that just a little talk with Jesus makes it right?

Oh.

Whoo, yeah.

Thank You, Jesus.

Sing it, choir.

All right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

lt`s all right.

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Oh, all you have to do is say it`s all right.

lt`s all right.

lt`s all right, folks.

lt`s all right.

Everything is all right.

lt`s all right.

All right.

lt`s all right.

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Whoo, all right.

All right.

All right.

All right.

He`s all right.

He`s all right.

He`s all right.

Yes, He is.

Yeah, just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Oh, yeah, it`s all right.

lt`s all right.

Folks, it`s all right.

lt`s all right.

You believe it`s all right?

lt`s all right.

lt`s really all right.

lt`s all right.

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.

Oh, just a little talk with Jesus.

Everything is gonna be all right.

Writers and poets have always relied on metaphors

to communicate the deep truths.

Tell a story, use an object lesson,

give a real-life example,

and those abstract, hard-to-grasp principles

come to life

and weave themselves into the fabric of our days.

Not long ago,

Bill and l took a delightful trip on the train.

We were reminded of this great old song

and its powerful life metaphor.

Oome aboard.

Life is like a mountain railroad with an engineer that`s brave.

We must make the run successful from the cradle to the grave.

Watch the curves, the fields, the tunnels.

Never falter. Never fail.

Keep your hand upon the throttle and your eye upon the rail.

Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us

till we reach that blissful shore,

where the angels wait to join us in Thy praise forevermore.

You will roll the grades of trial.

You will cross the bridge of strife.

See that Ohrist is your conductor

on the light`ning train of life,

always mindful of obstruction, do your duty.

Never fail.

Keep your hand upon the throttle and your eye upon the rail.

Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us

till we reach that blissful shore,

where the angels wait to join us in Thy praise forevermore.

Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us

till we reach that blissful shore,

where the angels wait to join us in Thy praise forevermore,

where the angels wait to join us in Thy praise forevermore.

Jesus, oh, Jesus.

Do you know Him today?

Please don`t turn Him away.

Oh, Jesus, my Jesus.

Without Him, how lost l would be.

Without Him, l could do nothing.

And without Him, l`d surely fail.

And without Him, l would be drifting

like a ship without a sail.

Jesus, oh, Jesus.

Do you know Him today?

Please don`t turn Him away.

Oh, Jesus,

my sweet Jesus.

Without Him, how lost l would be.

Does Jesus care when l`m oppressed?

l know my Jesus sees and cares.

Does Jesus care when l`m distressed?

l know my Jesus cares.

Oh, yes, my Jesus cares.

Oh, yes, l know my Jesus cares.

Oh, yes, l know He cares.

l know my Jesus cares.

Does Jesus care when l`m filled with dread?

l know my Jesus sees and cares.

When my pillow`s wet from the tears l`ve shed,

l know my Jesus cares.

Oh, yes, my Jesus cares.

Oh, yes, l know my Jesus cares.

Oh, yes, l know He cares.

l know my Jesus cares.

Yes, my Jesus cares.

Oh, l know my Jesus cares.

Jesus sees and cares.

When l was a kid,

l remember my dad keeping a big, black ledger book.

And he`d carefully record

all the family`s expenses and payments

so that we could get by on the modest salary

that he`d made pastoring the little church he`d started.

And l`d think of that when l`d read in the Bible

that there`d be a day when we would have to give account

for everything we`d done in the flesh.

And l would think of God

sitting up there with His big ledger book

and opening it, looking down at me and saying,

``Guy, you`ve sure run up a big debt here.

``Looks like you`re going to have to forfeit your home in heaven.

You owe too much.``

But what a wonderful relief it was

to discover that God was not a tedious accountant,

but a loving Father who had not only paid my debt,

but had left an inheritance in my name-

not based on my performance as a son,

but on what He had already accomplished

in His life and death.

All l have to do is be His son.

They call this gift grace,

and it just makes me want to bring honor

to my Father`s name

by the way l respect myself and love others.

There was a time, l know, when in the book of heaven

an old account was standing for sins yet unforgiven.

My name was at the top and many things below

but l went to the keeper and settled long ago.

Long ago.

Down on my knees.

Long ago.

l settled it all.

Yes, the old account was settled long ago.

Hallelujah.

And the record`s clear today, for He washed my sins away

when the old account was settled long ago.

The old account was large.

lt grew larger every day,

for l was always sinning and never tried to pay.

But when l looked to Him and saw such pain and woe,

l said that l would settle and settled long ago.

Long ago.

Down on my knees.

Long ago.

l settled it all.

Yes, the old account was settled long ago.

Hallelujah.

And the record`s clear today, for He washed my sins away

when the old account was settled long ago.

When at the judgment bar l stand before the King

and He the book will open, but He cannot find a thing.

Then will my heart be glad while tears of joy will flow,

because l had it settled, and l settled it long ago.

Long ago.

Down on my knees.

Long ago.

l settled it all.

Yes, the old account was settled long ago.

Hallelujah.

And the record`s clear today, for He washed my sins away

when the old account was settled long ago.

Long ago.

Down on my knees.

Long ago.

l settled it all.

Yes, the old account was settled long ago

Hallelujah.

And the record`s clear today, for He washed my sins away

when the old account was settled long ago.

All my life long l had panted

for a drink from some cool spring

that l hoped would quench the burning

of the thirst l felt within.

Oh, hallelujah.

l have found Him, whom my soul so long has craved.

Jesus satisfies my longing.

Through His blood, l now am saved.

Feasting on the husks around me

till my strength was almost gone,

longed my soul for something better,

only still to hunger on.

Oh, hallelujah.

l have found Him,

whom my soul so long has craved.

Jesus satisfies my longing.

Through His blood, l now am saved.

Well of water ever springing, bread of life so rich and free,

untold wealth that never faileth my Redeemer is to me.

Oh, hallelujah.

l have found Him,

whom my soul so long has craved.

Jesus satisfies my longing.

Through His blood, l now am saved.

Through His blood, l now am saved.

Through His blood, l now am saved.

Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling,

calling for you and for me.

See on the portals, He`s waiting and watching,

watching for you and for me.

Oome home. Oome home.

Ye who are weary, come home.

Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,

calling, ``Oh, sinner, come home.``

Oome home.

Oome home.

Oome home.

Oome home.

Ye who are weary, come home.

Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,

calling, ``Oh, sinner, come home.``
