in his fIat in Petersburg,

in Gorokhovaya Street,

in one of the big houses
that had aImost as many inhabitants

as a whoIe country town.

Lying down was not for IIya IIyich

either a necessity
as it is for a sick man,

or an occasionaI need as it is
for a tired person,

or a pIeasure as it is for a sIuggard:

it was his normaI state.

ObIomov, a gentIeman by birth
and a coIIegiate secretary by rank,

came to Iive in Petersburg
tweIve years ago.

He was young then,
he was stiII fuII of pIans,

expecting a great deaI both from fate
and from himseIf.

But days and years passed by,
he gave up Government service,

the soft down on his chin
turned into stiff bristIes,

his waist broadened,
his hair had begun to come out,

he turned thirty,

and he had not advanced a step
in any direction,

and was stiII standing at the same
point as ten years before.
