LAINEY: Back in the '80s, it was always me and Barry Goldberg.

But then the '90s hit, and we grew up.

I was teaching at William Penn.

Barry was doing his residency in Detroit.

Barry? Barry?

For over a year, we tried to make it work long-distance.

We talked and talked... A lot.

And what we finally decided was best was to break up...

Maybe not forever, but definitely for now.

Of course I was a mess.

But I finally got myself up and out.

And fortunately, the best of all the '90s rom-coms,

Clueless, had just hit the theaters.

I love Josh.

LAINEY: And I found inspirations

from the bold, charming intelligence of Cher.

Her sense of independence made me feel like I could make it on my own.

So I decided to be just like her,

including the cute outfits.

Believe it or not, my breakup with Barry wasn't getting me down.

The two of us had decided to go our separate ways and remain friends,

so I was ready to move on with my life and put Barry in the past.

Let's talk about you and Barry.

I can't believe Barry left you for one of his nurses

and ran off to Toronto, the Paris of Canada.

It was totally mutual.

And at the very least, Montreal is the Paris of Canada.

That's not what I heard went down.

Word is, Goldberg stuck a note in her Build-a-Bear.

Using America's cuddliest mall novelty to do his dirty work.

Makes me sick.

Leave her alone! She's a grown woman. She's fine.

Are you fine? I can make you a pie, sweetie.

Guys, take it from me, who was actually there,

it was a totally normal break-up.

Now, can we please move on with our day?

Aw, Lainey, there you are.

CB and Wilma need a third for the prom committee,

and I thought, who better than you to help them out?

I'd be happy to.

Thank you for treating me like a fully functioning person.

Anything to take your mind off of the brutal breakup.

And to think Barry crushed your heart

on a beautiful hot-air balloon ride

over the vineyards of Napa.
