grandkids or whatever this is the

episode more than any other episode to

time when we are literally having our

community and our sense of togetherness

being restricted and so hopefully for

you over these last couple nights or

days when you're whenever you're

watching you've been able to experience

a little bit of community and connection

with other people now speaking of that

while you are watching and there are

other people you can talk to many people

who you are going to be able to talk to

have already seen the show and so it's

fun to geek out on all that and talk

Episode three now episode three is a

very special episode it happens to be an

episode that I wrote I have two other co

writers Ryan and Tyler the three of us

write everything together and they of

course contributed to episode 3 but

episode 3 was one that I kind of worked

on more by myself than any other episode

because I really wanted an episode that

captured the Jesus that I thought about

a lot when I was growing up now to be so

that I don't sound arrogant when I tell

you that I wrote this episode it happens

to be one of on my list of my top eight

episodes of season one it's actually

near the bottom not because I don't like

it I love it it's just that there are

some of the other ones I think are so

great for many people episode 3 is their

favorite because this is where you get

to see Jesus by himself in many cases I

really wanted to capture when I when I

was a kid I would think about what did

Jesus like when he's praying

what's his bedtime routine when he was

by himself and living by himself how did

they know how did he make food you know

how did he make fire you know did he did

he just you know point his finger at a

bush and just set it on fire because he

had the ability to do miracles I didn't

think so I thought he was a human being

he had power over the sick

I thought wouldn't it be interesting if

and I think it's more likely that Jesus

inhabited a human body and he sweat and

he bled and he bruised and he had sore

muscles just like we did and he had a

job as we know he was a craftsman as and

so I wanted to capture some of that and

then also see what would happen if a

group of children came across him and

they didn't know who he was and how

would that interaction go and so that's

what this episode is about and so as I

said if you have kids or you know of

kids who would love something like this

now is the time to show it to them

and if you don't like watching on

so what did you do I tried to walk away

but he wouldn't stop pushing me so I

pushed him so hard he fell down and

that's why you were punished did you

expect something different but even

Torah says I've arrived why should I be

punished dude yes but that is for a

judge you're hardly in a court of law

and you all of you are to be special you

are to act differently than others you

tell us to be gentle but rabbi Josiah

said Messiah but leaders against the

Romans that should be a great military

leader it is important to respect your

teachers and honor your parents and

rabbi Josiah is a smart man but many

times smart men like wisdom is there

anything in scripture that says Messiah

will be a great military leader there

are many things about scripture that you

cannot understand yet then that is okay

that is fine you have many years ahead

of you and God does not review all

things at once but children what if many

of the things that our people think

about how we are to behave and how we

are to treat one another are all you

want things to be fair when someone

wrongs you you want to write it and you

know who else loves justice

but what does the Lord say in the law of

Moses about justice and vengeance

vengeance is mine yes very good very

good boys

pay attention she doesn't even go to

Torah class huh

the Lord loves justice but maybe it is

smoked ours to handle do you remember

when David had the chance to kill King

Saul who was evil to him but he didn't

Saul was God's anointed and it was not

the right time for justice and God says

he will have compassion on his people

when what let's see if someone who

studies this at school is learning is

good yes very good so maybe we let God

provide the justice hmm maybe we handle

these things in a different way not

trying to be the strongest all the time

I would have to see but do not expect

Messiah to arrive in Jerusalem on a tall

horse carrying weapons and he will be

most pleased with those of you who are

the peacemakers well why are you

yesterday I had to stay in town later on

there was a woman who needed my help

did you burn something for her you know

you remember when I said that I have a

job that is bigger than my trade there

is a woman who has had much pain in her

life and she was in trouble so I helped

her

is she your friend she is now and I have

chosen her and others and more soon to

join me in traveling do they know you

not yet

but what if they don't like you many

want this is my reason for being here I

still don't understand what is your

reason for being here I'm telling you

this because even though you are

children and the elders in your life

have lived longer many times adults need

the faith of children and if you hold on

to this faith really tightly someday

soon you will understand all of what I'm

saying to you but you ask an important

question Abigail what is my reason for

being here and the answer is for all of

you

a spirit of the Lord is upon me

she has anointed me to proclaim good

news to the poor

he has sent me to proclaim Liberty to

the captives and recovering of sight to

the blind to set at liberty those who

are oppressed

to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor

Isiah I have loved spending this time

you are also very special and I hope

that my next students ask the same

questions you do and that they listen to

my answers but I suspect they do not

have the understanding you know

and I hope that when the time comes they

why we're not as we're not closer is

my wife Amanda because we've got

something really exciting to tell you

about in just a moment I first wanted to

the chosen devotional book is something

that we did Amanda and her co-writer

Kristen Hendricks who will talk about

also in just a second and I got together

to do something we wanted to take people

even deeper into the stories of the

Gospels and people in the Gospels even

deeper than the show can go and this is

essentially a companion piece to the

show so this was a man his first big

contribution to the show on a physical

level on a literal level your main

contribution to the show has been prayer

and keeping me alive but but but the

this devotional book the chosen 40 days

with Jesus sadly we are completely sold

out in the gift store and on the app so

really cool thing is she just finished

recently writing the children's book the

children's book based on Episode three

that they just watched and you have a

couple of illustrations to show well so

let me let me say we're I wrote the book

Dallas asked me to write a kids book

based on episode three but my good

friend Christian who is the co-author on

the book Dallas just showed you the

devotional is an incredible artist and

so I brought her on board to do the

illustrations and let's see how well I

do at this so we have a couple little

fun character show with a brave Abigail

yeah you can see them there and then we

have some little friends two of their

friends and then we've got another

picture that she drew that isn't from

the episode but it has a really great

message and includes a Bible verse that

we can bring up right now I believe but

this is a great picture check that out

this is Jesus of course taking my place

as the director of the children and it

says a man's heart plans his way but the

Lord directs his steps proverbs 16:9 so

showing Jesus as the director has

meanings in many more ways than one and

a christen I didn't even know she did

that I just

of any images of Jesus from the book and

she goes well I have you seen that one

director image that I did and I hadn't

and it was so great so we're gonna put

that out on social media she's working

on all the illustrating so we're working

on compiling it all and getting it made

so talk about the process of the

devotional Kristen and Amanda did the

bulk of the work I you would hand me the

devotionals when you were all done and I

kind of made a few tweaks here and there

but for the most part I was reading them

and crying and being moved just like so

many have been almost 20,000 people

already have gotten the devotional books

and have been talking every day about

how much they've been impacted by the

devotional but the process of writing it

has been really interesting because you

and Kristen don't seem to plan ahead

very you just seem to I see you I come

down in the morning and I see you

already writing and it's it's almost as

if you literally have your hands out

waiting for you yeah yeah I I didn't um

I personally didn't set out to be a

writer so um writing has been borne out

of my is borne out of my time kind of

journaling kind of making sense of

things that he teaches me and so Kristen

is really similar and and we both we

joke that apart from our quiet time in

prayer time we would have nothing to say

because that's what I weave if I skip

quiet time if Kristen skips quiet time

with the Lord it's crickets it we don't

have things to say so um I don't want to

you know make it sound like we're

getting some kind of direct you know

prophecy from the Lord or something like

that but it really is borne out of our

time with him and so Dallas gives us

these parameters to work with in scenes

from the show that you'll be covering

the timeline of of season 1 right now

you're doing season two's devotional so

we are writing Ryan Tyler and I are

writing season 1 the scripts and we're

telling you this is the time the

covering of season 2 this is what you

have to cover but that's not that's

pretty much all you get yeah and it

always is like here are the four

chapters that we are covering so you

have kind of you have four Gospels but

you have this much space

case and so we're really just mining

those chapters and without you know

divine intervention you would have

nothing to share so that is the process

and then we split the work and she just

happened I do half and then we get back

together and we hope we didn't overlap

and we haven't ever and God kind of

leads her and leads me and then so it's

really cool process that wouldn't make

any publisher nervous right but it is it

has never failed

I mean it's every time that we're at our

most this is me when I'm writing the

scripts or when she's writing the

devotional and Kristen's writing when

we're at our most desperate or our most

gosh I'm not sure what it is

I'm supposed to say here it's always

better than if we would have come within

with our own mindset and so one of the

best things that I think you and I have

been doing through this whole problem

Oh learning just listening because

that's not easy for either one of us so

talk about why we'll just take just

another minute or two here

but tell why the children's book is

different from other children's book

you've actually written to other

children's books before she's actually

written three books before the chosen

came about

now the

o-5 what do you think is different about

this children's book from other

children's books that are out there

right now yeah I don't know how

technical to get about this but um books

are usually based on some kind of an

they call it I am being bullied I

whatever um right AB read a book that

helps children who are being bullied

yeah some kind of topic some kind of

issue and that's that's great this when

Dallas said we want to do a book based

on Episode three my first thing was I

don't know what the felt need there is

because I'm used to what publishers say

but here's what's so cool is I I think

ultimately the need is simply knowing

Jesus I think episode three has been an

extraordinary thing for adults and kids

alike that we know Jesus in a way that

we didn't before after 35 years of

knowing Jesus I came to know Jesus in a

way that I hadn't before seeing some

things from episode three and what

greater need is there for children than

to actually introduce them in like a an

experiential way I wanted them to

experience Jesus the way that we did in

Episode three and so that in and of

itself was a powerful thing I would

literally set up my computer and I would

watch and it's not seen foreseen because

that would make a really bad book but it

is the the heart of it and Jesus is

interaction with these kids and his

heart for kids and then for parents

there's that extra layer of faith like

children and so it was so I I'm I'm kind

of negative sometimes with Dallas and

his ideas because he's like an ideas guy

and I'm always like no that won't work

because and then I have like reasons it

won't work and so I said no to this at

first and then I said yes and then it

was awesome like the experience of

writing it was off awesome the

experience of rewatching episode three

over and over was awesome and I am so

excited I think more than any other

project that I've ever done for this to

come to fruition because of just how

sweet it is and how fundamental it is to

just know Jesus um in his personhood and

in and as God all in one little sweet

package so so

whatever people ask me we have and we

have literally thousands of fans who

have asked what can I pray for how can I

pray for you on and oftentimes even when

I'm doing interviews someone will say

how can I pray for you specifically and

the first thing I always say is pray for

her pray for my wife and kids right now

can you just I think what I'd love to

close your time here can you share with

the viewers what your experience with

this project has been starting back in

2017 when we first when we first got the

news that the resurrection of Gavin

stone my film had bombed at the box

office and we didn't know what our

future was you were the one who God

spoke to about feeding of the 5,000 the

loaves & Fishes thing that's all started

with God and you're speaking to you in

prayer and and then how then the

Shepherd came out of that and then the

chosen came out of the Shepherd and over

the last two years since this happened

it's been the most rewarding and the

most challenging time of our entire

lives so just share with the viewers how

they can pray but also just what your

experience has been seeing God work in

this time yeah I mean when God strips

everything else away and sadly he kind

of has to do that for to seek Him and to

cling to him and I think this has been

my um

the season in my life where I have

learned how to do that and I'm a planner

and I am a controller and we just have

had none of that just none of it and

learning how awesome that is and what an

adventure that is but I think the the

greatest way to pray for for me

especially is his support is that I

would continue in that because what I do

is I do that and then I get god right we

cling to God and we get God we seek God

we get him and and then I loosen my grip

because then I get a little like

comfortable and he's had to keep us

really uncomfortable to keep me clinging

so I would love to learn that lesson

without

the desperate circumstances but I just I

just need to continue in that and I

think that's weather and plenty or in

what I want to know how did how to do

that and so that we would be faithful

and clinging so that we would tell

exactly the things he wants us to tell

to the people who are so faithfully

absorbing it and wanting to hear it too

so that we would be faithful in being

desperate I don't I guess I think

there's also quite a bit of gratitude to

literally the fact that we the show

doesn't exist without them it's not

that's not just something he says I hear

him say that in the other room all the

time I do dishes in the other room from

this room and so I hear him say that a

lot that is not a thing he just says and

we are constantly moved at how God has

kept us from doing this by ourselves

like that whole one body that the Church

of Christ is one body many parts like

this does not happen without the Church

of Christ so the Church of Christ makes

this happen and then we like bring our

desperate selves to the process and God

is gracious to like put all that

together but we don't feed our family

without you guys and we certainly don't

make this project without you guys and

this project doesn't go out to the world

without you guys so that's not a thing

that we say that's the way that we live

now so it's been a precious and humbling

and Kling worthy thing and it all just

it's you know that's our pretty cycle is

desperation and clinging and

gratefulness all kind of all at the same

time awesome

just a few more things I would like to

share with you of course I want to talk

about the let's see I love these it is

cool things right now that I mentioned

episode about the birth of christ from

perspective of the shepherds that

launched all of this that's on the dvd's

but also we have eight roundtable

discussions from a Catholic priest of

Messianic Jewish rabbi in an evangelical

scholar where we talk about the episodes

and the show itself is I would say

nondenominational it's just we're just

about the stories of Christ but the

discussions about how these have been

interpreted by other faith traditions is

very fascinating and one of the coolest

things about this show is how it is

United Catholics Jews evangelicals

you'll see people in the chat club in

the chat forums and in the fan clubs

people from the LDS Church people from

the Catholic Church people from

Messianic Jewish Church who all you know

have plenty to argue about outside of

these stories but when it comes to the

stories of Christ there is more there's

so much agreement and love of this show

and love of the Gospels that it's based

on it's really been cool to see so if

you've got beefs to pick with other

faith traditions you can have those on

in the forums if you'd like but watching

this show is when it all seems to calm

down and it all seems like we're able to

focus you together just like we're doing

right now on the life of Christ and on

the stories of Christ so you'll see that

it has been weird working with Jesus

because for the most part you're like oh

yeah yes Jesus yes he you have to I love

like watching them set up the cameras

and I love doing scenes like hearing

into action and watching the thing go

down I will always remember that it's

really fun the main thing I'm gonna

remember from this is probably the crew

and how nice you guys are to us and how

you guys treat us with all this care my

favorite part about the chosen is that

all the cast members food and other

people that worked on the show my

favorite part is when I woke up Jesus

couldn't have waited half an hour

I wanted to capture an episode that not

only captured Jesus by himself out alone

which is something that we've rarely

seen in any of Jesus projects but also

interactions with children and my wife

sent me a text the morning of so that

when I met with the child actors that I

was reminded of why we were doing this

episode and it was something that I

wanted to share with them actually to to

let them know why we were doing this

episode and she texted me and she said a

reminder when you have a moment of what

God feels toward the children on your

set today praying you'd be Jesus to them

praying they'd meet the real Jesus as a

result of their time with you and then

she shared with me these verses which

were about what Jesus said about

children to his disciples who were

looking down and dismissing children

which is how in that culture children

were kind of seen and not heard

and usually dismissed calling to him a

child Jesus put him in the midst of them

and said truly I say to you unless you

turn and become like children you will

never enter the kingdom of heaven

whoever humbles himself like this child

is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven

whoever receives one such child in my

name receives me but whoever causes one

of these little ones who believe in me

to sin it would be better for him to

have a great millstone fastened around

his neck and to be drowned in the depth

of the sea see that you do not despise

one of these little ones for I tell you

that in heaven their angels always see

the face of my father

meaning children have a special

connection to the father meaning

children are to be protected and that

adults are to actually be more like

children when it comes to their faith

but to also make sure that in our faith

physical clock that we are actually

pursuing a more childlike faith that we

are actually pursuing less human

maturity and more wonder and more awe

and more purity in learning and in our

so it's not only a helpful reminder to

the kids and to the actor playing Jesus

but also to me as we're approaching

episode 103 so tell me do you all know

how to pray the Shema yes oh I would

love to hear it you need

beautiful very good all right before you

I'm for a little while longer and here's

why I have just been informed that we

are just a couple thousand dollars away

from hitting the two million dollar mark

for season two so if you did not know

this you can actually see it on the app

we have a counter there and it's it's

not perfectly in real-time because of

course it takes time to process things

but we are as you pay it forward and as

you buy merchandise like the sweatshirts

and as you buy the devotional book and

as you buy the DVDs that's not making us

rich that is going towards season two

and allowing us to keep the lights on in

this room and and keep making these

videos and so we are I'm gonna stay on

until we hit the two million dollar mark

because that will mean we are officially

one fifth of the way of having season

two fully funded now you may think only

one fifth that is so slow oh my goodness

how are you ever going to get season two

done this is so frustrating we want it

done now I get it but here's the good

news

we haven't even done our investment

round yet which which we may not even

need to the pace that this has been

going just in the last couple weeks has

been so great that there is a scenario

in which eventually paying it forward

can sustain the show by itself and we

won't have to come back to you and ask

for more investment now that's of course

the plan long term but the question is

how many seasons can we can we do that

with how many seasons can we get to just

from paying it forward and right now the

pace is going up quickly enough that we

see this happening somewhere down the

line I don't know exactly when it's

going to be that's essentially up to you

but the quicker we can get to these

milestones the faster we can actually

shoot season two and get it out earlier

will we get season two out this year

probably not I think especially with

what's been going on with the the the

pandemic it has slowed a lot of things

down across

world but for this show actually things

are somewhat picking up the pace in

terms of pay it forwards so I want to

helping the show pay it forward is the

long-term sustainable model I really

want you to do that at least once I

think that's the most important thing

all the other merch we have helps

because it's a great conversation

starter for the show but paying it

forward is really where we're able to

get the show translated it's where we're

able to show this to the world and when

you're paying it forward so that people

can watch it for free what do they do

those who have the means are also paying

it forward and so it's like an

investment not only spiritually but

financially in the show so doing that is

so meaningful and helps us out quite a

bit and helps the show and I know you

care about getting to season two so

anything you can do now just in the next

I don't know a few minutes I don't want

to be here all night obviously I don't

think I'll have to be but if we can get

to that two million dollar mark just in

the next couple minutes that would be

awesome so you don't have to leak keep

of the things I wanted to point out is

that when you are paying it forward for

season two you're also paying it forward

for season eight we want to do eight

seasons of this show if you think about

a show like Game of Thrones which was

eight seasons it costs them about a

billion dollars to produce all eight

seasons I'm not exaggerating was about a

billion dollars to produce eight seasons

of game of

and they released well they were seen by

well over a billion people around the

world that those are our goals with one

big exception we don't need a billion

dollars to do eight seasons of Game of

Thrones we think we're gonna need

somewhere around a tenth of that now a

hundred million dollars sounds crazy but

we were able to get ten million dollars

from you for season one based on a short

film I did on my friend's farm and

Marengo Illinois the short film that I

did for my church's Christmas Eve

service those little loaves and fishes

that we provided have God has been

feeding the 5,000 and you've been

bringing in your loaves and fishes as

well and that has allowed us to do

season one and so season two and three

when we if we have to open up investment

for that I know it's gonna be even

easier than season one was but

ultimately when you pay it forward

you're not only financing season two

you're financing season eight and here's

why it's like I said before that paying

it forward

allows other people to see it for free

which then allows them to want to pay it

forward and it builds on itself and

that's what we've been seeing over these

last two weeks we have brought in more

for season two than ever before since we

made it free and easy I'm getting text

right now I'm gonna read it Ross from

North Carolina just paid forward 1,000

which means that we are at one point

nine nine nine

we are literally 1,000 dollars away we

are one thousand dollars away from two

million dollars so John from unknown

just paid it forward another thousand

episodes I'm gonna call it that means I

think that means we're there of course

not every single cent from pay it

forward goes directly to season two some

of it goes towards our translating into

other languages and into offsetting the

cost of the streams but thank you thank

we don't have all of the numbers

tabulated perfectly but I'm gonna go

ahead and call it we have hit the two

million dollar mark thank you so much it

has really been humbling to watch these

last two weeks to watch how you have

stepped up

know I might be jumping the gun just a

bit but I'm sure there's people right

so some of my partners may be like no we

didn't get to million dollars yet I'm

gonna go ahead and say we did because I

know that we have we aren't counting in

this counter all of what's come in from

merchandise sales as well and from DVDs

and even from the books that you're

buying on Amazon the chosen 40 day

devotional and here's the thing I want

you to understand so there's something

that's very consistent about what I

wanted to talk about because I said from

the beginning we were never going to

become salespeople I never wanted you to

start pitching product that's one of the

reasons why the show is free but even

when we there's things that we can't

make free like the book or the DVDs

they're all things that I truly believe

and God has truly blessed us with

they're going to enrich your life even

even the shirts even the shirts and the

sweatshirts we've wanted to make them

things you'll actually wear I wanted to

make them the things that when you wear

them out in public they will cause

conversations this show is not the end

game life change is the end game

introducing people to an authentic Jesus

as the end game and I can't tell you how

many people have said on social media I

wore this shirt out in public of course

it's been less than the last couple of

weeks but I wear this shirt someone

asked me what it was about I was able to

tell them about the DAP they downloaded

the app right then in there and we

watched it like they watched it and they

ended up telling me that they loved the

show the bin Jesus message the the

against the current the fish the 13 fish

going in the opposite direction from the

crowd all of those are intentionally

life-giving conversation starting I got

another text let's see it's gonna yeah

it's going to tabulate every five

minutes so we hit the yeah word from

have two million dollars thank you so

I'm not gonna spend much more time here
