? To memory now

? I can't recall

? So fill to me the parting glass

? Goodnight, and joy be with you all

? Goodnight, and joy be with you all. ?

(ENGINES TURN OFF)

"Stop killing our sheep."

Not now, Mum.

Lisa...

...Dad would have wanted you to have these.

I'll do my best to honour Sam's legacy,

and serve the club as proudly as he did.

Because...

...wild ones never die!

(CHEERING)

(PIERCING SOUND)

Lisa?

(LABOURED BREATHING)

Lisa, what...?

Lisa?

Lisa, what's the matter?

Lisa, what is it?

Lisa, speak to me, what is it?

(BIRDS CAW)

(THEME MUSIC)

Victim, Lisa Pincent, local buildings and conservations officer,

and... biker.

Quite a gathering.

Yeah, part wake, part succession.

The victim had just been voted in

as the president of the Sons of Annerby

after the death of the previous leader, Sam Jenkins.

Who died of...?

Natural causes, aged 85.

Check.

Fleur, what have we got?

Plenty of choppers,

a few prospects,

lots of patches,

tight brotherhood, lively MC, full house for church.

Have you been drinking?

Careful.

My throttle skills are to die for.

Choppers are bikes, sir.

MC is the motorcycle club,

and church is where the club meets.

In this case, the pub.

I see.

And at the risk of speaking English, cause of death?

Chemical intervention through the brain bucket.

The helmet.

I think.

Fitted with a spring-loaded spike connected to a small capsule.

Triggered when the helmet was pulled tight.

Something was injected into her head?

And struck a major blood vessel.

She bled fast, and whatever was on the spike did the rest.

The helmet was poisoned, sir.

Yes, I got that, Winter.

Residue is sticky, and has a slightly yellowish tinge.

I'll run a field test.

"Rise beyond. Become who you are."

Next of kin?

A brother, Kyle Pincent.

He's a IT repairman by day, and wannabe music promoter at night.

Annerby's answer to Glastonbury.

He's inside.

Well, you talk to the others.

I'll speak to Kyle.

Sir.

(INDISTINCT CHATTER)

Thank you.

Mr Pincent, I'm very sorry about what's happened.

Do you have any idea why anyone might want to kill your sister?

No, of course not.

I mean, Lisa was a tough cookie, all right.

And I don't think she'd win any popularity contest.

Because?

Building and conservations officer

in an area of outstanding natural beauty?

Part of her job was saying no to people, a lot.

And yet she'd just been voted president of the MC.

First ever female leader of the pack.

First thing she was going to do was change their name.

To?

The Sons And Daughters Of Annerby.

So let me get this straight.

You're performers, not club members?

Correct.

Me and Ethan are barbers by profession.

The Singing Steelers.

That's the name of our barbers.

And our barbershop quartet.

Although we were one down today.

Nelly couldn't make it.

Drake Kirby, big brother.

Bad voice and tattooist.

And you're a club member.

Die hard.

Sons of Annerby for life.

Not that I ride anymore.

Today was meant to be about remembering Sam.

Theo Repton.

I run the sheep farm across the valley.

Who was in charge of organising the wake?

Matt Jenkins. Sam's son.

He's the hub of the club.

But not the president?

No.

Lisa pipped me to the post on the presidency.

You must have been disappointed.

Well,

Dad had been president for donkeys - ever since we moved down here.

And I think the members wanted a change

and it's the reason we've got a constitution.

And the succession process was followed to the letter.

And yeah, Lisa won fair and square.

Very noble of you.

Look, this can't have been one of us.

Sons are all about codes of conduct, decency, loyalty.

Blood brothers.

Ancestors.

Let's hope so.

I gather Ms Pincent was preparing to ring some radical changes.

Oh, you mean the name?

Well, it's a great idea.

Keeps us up to date,

ahead of the curve and at the cutting edge of MC-dom.

That clearly matters to you.

Cut me and I would bleed engine oil.

The helmet that your father wore,

the one that Lisa Pincent put on, who might have had access to it?

Well, club clobbers kept in the room at the back of the pub.

It was in there.

So anyone might have had access.

And what do you do when you're not running the club?

I own and run the Biker's Bunch.

Is that a bar or a gym?

It's a florist.

Of course.

Hey.

Listen, now Lisa's dead, things will be different.

I hope so.

Everything's gonna be all right, yeah?

Given that Lisa Pincent's brief tenure is already over,

presumably the succession question remains.

I'll call a chapter meeting for tonight,

but I think, out of respect,

we should leave things the way they are for a while.

Very wise.

According to the constitution, who takes over in the meantime?

The treasurer.

And who might that be?

Me.

Here you go, Matt.

One snake bite, the biker's poison.

John, how the devil are you?

It's been an age.

What can I get you, a pint?

Nothing, thank you, Julia.

I'm... I'm on duty.

Ooh, so I see.

Who knew the great John Barnaby returned to Midsomer as a detective?

And you remained a biker.

You two know each other?

Biblically.

A long time ago.

A golden summer. And everyone calls me Jules now.

Look, Justin and Tim, the landlords, have laid on a mountain of food,

so tuck in, no point in it going to waste.

Don't mind if I do, if that's okay with you.

How well did you know Lisa Pincent?

As well as anyone could.

She wasn't the friendliest, but we got on.

A strong woman who took no prisoners.

Did you consider standing for the presidency yourself?

I leave all that stuff to the boys.

Someone like Matt.

The Sons fills a gaping hole in his life.

That guy takes minutes of meetings.

The boys are all talk, though.

More interested in polishing their chrome than riding it.

Whereas there is nothing I like more

than to feel that power growling between my legs.

As well you know.

(COUGHS)

Did I miss something, sir?

Not at all, Winter.

Fill me in on your end.

The motorcycle club certainly has its enemies, sir.

One villager, Mary Repton, was handing out protest leaflets.

Also, there was an unidentified lone biker at the wake.

Their visor down, seemingly paying their respects,

but not part of the same chapter.

Interesting.

And there's something else.

Drake Kirby is a tattooist.

Now, if someone needed to rig a spike in a helmet,

he might know how to do that.

MAN: You're bang out of order, Hayley!

You'd be nothing without your father.

You should show a bit more respect.

Like he does, do you mean?

He said he'd be here, and he should have been.

But, oh, he wasn't.

Quel surprise.

Yeah, you know why he's not.

And I don't blame him.

Your father is a complete legend. (SCOFFS)

You'd do well to remember that. Mmm.

Tensions running high, Miss Kirby?

(SIGHS) Just annoyed. Dad should be here.

Sam's funeral meant a lot to my brother, Drake.

Sam was there for him, particularly after the accident.

And they were close.

Dad should be here. It's, like, end of.

Kyle Pincent seemed to think your father had reason not to be.

Why?

Drake's accident happened on a club ride,

which...

...was arguably Lisa's fault.

So Dad bears a grudge.

Then we need to speak to him.

And he's a legend because?

My dad is Dex Kirby.

A rock god, Winter.

Famous, infamous, even.

Lead singer of Shadow Slayer.

It's a bit before my time.

(SCOFFS) Mine too.

We just grew up in the aftermath.

Are you looking for something, sir?

A back room with bike club clobber.

Follow me.

Nellie Barton, an Annerby angel.

Is that another chapter of the club?

No, silly.

We're cleaners.

Me and Mary Repton.

Nellie, are you the one that didn't make it

to sing in the quartet this morning?

That's me.

Ring Road near me at Midsomer Barrow is backed up.

Roadworks there are a nightmare.

Here we are.

Clubber central.

(LAUGHS)

Busy man, your Mr Kirby.

Not only has he applied to the council

to have the motorcycle club shut down,

but he also recently made a harassment claim

against Kyle Pincent.

The man we just saw defending him to his daughter.

Mm. Yeah, exactly.

The residue on the helmet tested positive for plant alkaloids,

which gives us a few toxic candidates.

I put money on aconitine - the devil's helmet.

Wolfsbane to you.

Didn't Wolfsbane get its name

because it used to be smeared on the tips of arrows to kill wolves?

It did indeed.

The spike alone, though, would have been fatal.

The poison was simply insurance.

Mm.

You might want to check out the function room, Fleur.

Red graffiti.

My hunch is that it's not paint.

Give me more of a pileup by the minute.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Just Mary.

(SIGHS)

(LAUGHS) Relax.

What are you doing here?

I'm protesting against this bunch of clowns.

But seeing as I'm here, we all set for later?

I don't know.

What if something goes wrong?

Then we fix it like adults.

This is our chance now.

But do you still want to be cleaning when you're 80?

Don't be late.

Where's my jacket?

Shadow Slayer recorded five studio albums, sold 40 million records,

with The Serpent That Speaks going double platinum.

Oh, I've got that one somewhere.

Didn't have you down as a rocker, sir.

Oh, there's plenty you don't know about me, Winter.

Shadow Slayer were known for their dark lyrics,

an aggressive stage style, and flamboyant frontman Dex Kirby.

Real name Desmond, though he doesn't like to be reminded of that.

He reputedly slept with 3,000 women

and once brought a goat on stage

and tried to teach it to headbang.

As I've said, infamous.

Very baroque and roll. (LAUGHS)

I wonder if he keeps goats.

Excuse me, we're looking for Mr Kirby.

You're looking at him.

It's about the shenanigans at the pub, I take it?

It's about murder, Mr Kirby.

Oh.

Did you have any dealings with Lisa Pincent

in her role as buildings and conservation officer for the area?

Couple of things over the years.

I liked her.

Why did you apply to have the motorcycle club shut down then?

Noise pollution.

Says the rock star.

Yeah. Former rock star.

And that's the point.

Got tinnitus in both ears

from years of standing in front of amps the size of small houses.

Is that why you weren't at the memorial?

Your daughter seemed disappointed you weren't there.

That's her problem, not mine.

Nothing to do with your son Drake's accident?

Bikers are not renowned for their health and safety,

but that route was known to be hazardous.

And was chosen by Lisa Pincent.

What happened?

Drake took a corner at speed, came off the road, damaged his spine.

It's just one of those things.

But that was well over a year ago now.

What happened was life-changing, but... we move on.

Drake clings to the past, to the pack.

I don't.

Hence no memorabilia on display.

Exactly.

Meaningless trinkets and baubles.

All that's locked away in the attic where it belongs.

Even the one and only double platinum disc in existence

of The Serpent That Speaks.

The past?

Different country.

These days, I prefer gardening.

And Nietzsche, who influenced your lyrics, if I remember rightly.

Correct.

His Great Man theory, mainly on the serpent album.

The idea that certain individuals are above the rules,

beyond good and evil.

Never ends well.

"Rise beyond.

"Become who you are."

That's one of yours, isn't it?

Lisa Pincent had those words written on her leather jacket.

She must have been quite a fan.

A lot of the Sons were Slayer fans.

Yeah, Slayer mates, they called themselves.

Or, if memory serves, the Slain.

Nothing to do with me.

I've had enough biker fandom to last several lifetimes.

Speaking of fans, Kyle Pincent speaks very highly of you,

and yet you recently took a harassment claim against him.

Why?

Because that grovelling leech was badgering me

about writing a biography, to which I said no.

He was also trying to coax me out of retirement

to perform in his pie-in-the-sky music festival.

(SCOFFS)

Over my dead body.

He wouldn't take no for an answer, so I lodged a complaint.

I also gather that you have a barber shop in your back garden.

Did Lisa Pincent approve that?

She did.

And is that where Drake does his tattooing?

It is.

Perhaps we can take a look?

You can.

There's no current Mrs Kirby, I take it?

Left all that behind -

marriages, groupies.

All that throwing underwear on the stage -

not exactly hygienic.

Your children have clearly inherited the musical gene.

Are you involved in any way?

I write for them.

Just written a folk ballad.

My latest thing.

A bit like My Darling Clementine?

Ah, a classic of its genre.

Darker than you think. Mm.

It's about a young girl drowning, isn't it?

What do you keep in your greenhouse?

I collect all sorts of unusual specimens.

Black bat flowers, ghost orchids, poison ivy.

What about wolfsbane?

Yeah, of course.

It would seem wolfsbane was used to kill Lisa Pincent.

Do you have a lock on the door?

No need.

Perhaps there was a need

if someone stole the poison from here that killed Miss Pincent.

I don't see any security cameras.

I don't believe in them.

If I wanted to be watched, I'd have stayed on tour.

Spent years being filmed, photographed, obsessed over.

The last thing I need is more cameras.

I see.

And for the record,

where were you this morning when the service was taking place?

Here.

Very rarely leave.

The world remembers me, even when I don't want it to.

What did you make of Mr Kirby?

I'm not sure I buy all that stuff about hating fame.

It can't be that bad being idolised.

It's not all it's made out to be.

Well, I know that your reputation for solving crime

is second to none, sir, but...

I didn't mean work.

I used to be in a band.

(LAUGHS)

Are you serious?

I knew when it was time to cut the long hair,

lose the bandanas and follow my dream of being a detective.

Are you all right, Winter?

Not really.

You had long hair, a bandana and you were in a band.

What else?

Let's just focus on the job at hand, shall we?

Where are we at with Lisa Pincent's buildings and conservation cases?

The most recent rejected planning application was Jules Fletcher.

Something to do with her vintage clothing business.

Shall I go talk to her?

No, you talk to Kyle Pincent.

See what he has to say about being accused of harassment,

but more to the point, clarify whether his sister

had actually given permission for the music festival.

I'll speak to Jules.

(MAN LAUGHS)

You're brilliant.

Brilliant.

No, cool. Well done, Theo.

All right, we'll talk later.

Bye.

What are you two up to?

We're not up to anything. Why?

Ethan, you can flirt for England, but leave Theo alone.

Hayley loves him.

Do you not think I know that?

Yes, but you love stirring things.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Twice in one day!

People will talk.

I need to ask you about the rejected application you made to Lisa Pincent.

(SIGHS)

Nothing to tell, really.

I drag my gear round all the markets, festivals,

but I want to convert this place into a commercial premises.

Lisa said no.

Because?

Because she could.

I liked Lisa, but she could be a control freak.

A strong woman who takes no prisoners and turned you down.

What was the official reason given?

(SIGHS)

"Change of use" would harm the residential character of the area.

Harm it how?

It's a cottage, not a cathedral.

And do not get me started on the parking.

She made it sound like I was going to open a supermarket.

And how did you take this refusal?

I was furious.

This is my house.

I should be allowed to change it.

But no, I didn't kill her, John.

Sorry.

DCI Barnaby.

Sorry, the place is a mess.

Our two sport contracts and festival planning aren't great for tidiness.

Given what's happened to Lisa, I can't really face any of it.

Quite the book club you must have around here.

Not a potboiler in sight.

Dex got me into this lot.

He's the man, all right.

This way.

So, you defend him to his children, take his reading tips,

and dream of resurrecting his career.

He reports you to the police for harassment.

How does that work exactly?

(LAUGHS) Dex, he's a law unto himself.

Always has been, always will be.

He doesn't play by anyone else's rules but his own,

which is why you have to forgive him.

Is it? I'd have thought you'd be angry with him.

No.

I mean, it's not nice being reported to the police.

I probably was a bit OTT.

Can you blame me?

If he'd agreed to perform, that's the festival sold out overnight.

And your sister had given permission for the festival?

Yeah, of course, totally.

Slayer got us through our teenage years.

Lisa had such a crush on him.

Posters above the bed, fan club, the whole thing.

How had they got on since then?

Fine.

Although you never really get over your first love, do you?

You seen Dex yet?

I have.

Not that he recognised me,

which I have to say I was rather pleased about.

He wouldn't, would he?

He's only ever been interested in himself.

And that hasn't changed over the years.

You have much to do with him?

Not really, no.

I see him about, but he acts as if he never knew me.

Not that we lasted very long anyway.

I was on the rebound from you, and I dumped him.

I guess he got over it.

Slayer probably saw to that.

Not long after, I gave up the business.

How about you?

Married with kids, I guess?

Yes, one.

Marriage or kid?

Both.

You?

Something you said earlier about the motorcycle club

filling a gaping hole in Matt Jenkins' life.

What did you mean by that?

Well, just that he's obsessed.

Matt's OK, but he needs to get a life.

So how was he really about being passed over for president?

Oh, gutted.

He stormed out of the chapter meeting as soon as it was announced.

Hmm.

What do you think?

Mm.

Did you buy anything, sir?

No, I'm not sure purple's really my colour.

Lisa Pincent wouldn't allow Jules Fletcher

to convert her home into a shop,

and yet that's exactly what

the Kirby's have done with their barbershop.

Well, maybe it's easier on a private estate.

Fewer neighbours to complain.

Oh, Fleur rang.

The spike is aluminium alloy.

Drake's tattoo needles are titanium, so no easy match there.

Also, she looked into the paperwork

of the death of the previous president, Sam Jenkins,

and it turns out there was an autopsy.

Implying there were concerns.

Yeah, related to his son, Matt.

Possible neglect.

Someone took a pop at her.

Tried to break in, maybe.

Did you report it?

Of course.

We're actually here about your father's death.

His autopsy confirmed natural causes,

but it also highlighted three contributing factors.

Dehydration, malnutrition, and untreated infection.

You were his main carer.

Dad couldn't cope on his own, so I moved him in here with me.

I did my best, but I'm no nurse.

Mum died when I was young, and the thought of Dad going too was...

You've had to deal with a lot recently.

Your father's death, the club elections.

You said you respected the decision,

but I gather you stormed out when the new president was announced.

Not part of your club's code of conduct, I imagine.

I took it badly.

I let myself down, that's all.

What happened to your jacket?

Somebody's idea of a sick joke, I suppose.

The angel on the patch, that's specific to your club.

Ripping it off isn't a joke, it's an insult.

Why would someone want to insult you?

It's odd about the jacket.

And the window.

The glass bowed out, not in.

Check CCTV outside the florist on the night the presidency was announced.

Couple of things.

It is blood on the pub wall.

Ovis aries.

More biker slang?

Sheep's blood.

Theo Repton owns a sheep farm.

Also, Tech asked me to pass these on.

Lisa Pincent kept a journal on her computer.

Today's entry is strange.

It's about a time capsule.

The Annerby time capsule.

It was buried during the millennium celebrations.

A snapshot for future generations.

Wonder what was in this time capsule.

Oh, Sarah might know.

I seem to recall her school did a history project on Annerby.

What did Lisa Pincent's journal entry say?

It says, "If anything happens to me, the truth is in the capsule."

Yeah, I know all about it.

The Annerby time capsule had plenty of things in it.

A millennium coin.

A New Year's Day front page.

A Christmas CD.

Predictions for the future.

As well as, seemingly, a clue to a murder.

Why would anything of Lisa Pincent's be in the capsule?

Well, there was a local competition.

The winners got to choose an item of their own to include.

And what could she have put inside that would be relevant

to her murder decades later?

Well, that's what we need to find out.

Who owns the land where the capsule's buried?

It's the Reptons' farmland.

As in Mary Repton, the cleaner who's anti-bikers?

Yes, but the farm is run by her son, Theo, who is dating Hayley Kirby.

Now, the odd thing is that two weeks ago he was arrested for crashing

one of the club meetings and accusing them of killing his sheep,

but still showed up at the wake.

We'll need to talk to him and dig up that capsule.

The whole point, John,

is the capsule's supposed to stay buried for 250 years.

Yeah, I'm not sure I can wait that long.

Besides, secrets are never meant to stay buried.

Speaking of which,

I've been hearing about a band that a certain detective was in.

Ah, Leviticus.

Leviticus?

Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus.

We wanted something...

Ancient.

No singles, no albums, and not enough songs for an encore.

We toured.

Oh, from the King's Head to the Swan and the Three Cygnets.

The length and breadth of Midsomer.

Midsomer?

I was staying with my cousin Tom.

What sort of music?

A little bit of New Wave, a little bit of post-punk,

and some very upbeat synth.

It was a mess, basically.

Three chords, one keyboard,

and a drum machine with delusions of grandeur.

We were ahead of our time.

Still waiting, you mean?

And what did you play?

Well, a bit of everything.

He played the maracas.

And not very well.

And only because he was going out with the lead singer at the time.

Oh.

From the photos he showed me,

she was one of those gorgeous female rocker types.

You know, leather jacket, T-shirt, faded jeans.

Whatever happened to her, I wonder.

She runs a vintage clothing shop in Annerby.

My, my, fancy that!

You sure I can't help?

No, it's all right.

Hayley, I know I said we'd go out tonight, but I just can't.

Mm. I've got way too much to do here.

Yeah, sure. No probs.

You know, maybe we could help?

I could ask Dad for some money.

No. No way.

I don't want that.

Well, God knows he can afford it.

I said no.

Yeah, OK.

It is all going to be fine.

It'll take time, but I've got a plan.

Please?

Hello, Mrs Repton!

(SIGHS)

Sorry.

Right.

New song, Clem's Lament.

You want to do a new song?

Did you not hear what happened yesterday, Dad?

Life goes on.

So, the song.

Oh, usual story, boy meets girl, bad stuff happens, people die.

Let's rehearse later.

We can bring Jules and Nellie in, too.

I need to talk to you.

It's about Theo.

Not now.

Ooh. Sir.

Oh, sir.

Thank you.

Couple of things overnight, sir.

Matt Jenkins, who had the attempted break-in at his florist,

said that he'd reported it, but he hadn't.

I didn't think so.

And what else?

Mary Repton has reported an attempted murder.

Ow!

Sorry.

Believe us now?

Someone tried to kill me.

And there's another sheep dead.

That's the fourth.

What time did the incident take place last night?

And did you see anyone?

Just before nine.

No.

It all happened so fast.

It's a deliberate campaign by Jules Fletcher and the MC.

Ow! Sorry, Mum.

Why would the motorcycle club, or Jules Fletcher specifically,

want to damage your livelihood?

Because I've been protesting against them.

And she's the Queen Bee there.

She's got everyone wrapped round her little finger.

I don't know, Mum.

I need to check the feed and the water supply

before we point any more fingers.

Times are tough, I take it.

Never been tougher.

Falling livestock prices, rising feed and fuel costs, it's...

I could go on.

And talking of pointing fingers,

we hear you had a run-in a couple of weeks ago with the Sons of Annerby.

When that lot race past on their night rides,

the flock scatter and newborns get trampled.

As a result, lambing season was the worst we've ever had.

I may have let the stress get the better of me.

Would that stress extend to painting anti-biker graffiti

on a pub wall in sheep's blood?

I don't know anything about that.

If you're so opposed to the club, why did you attend the wake?

To support Hayley.

She's the best thing that's happened to me.

This place has to survive so that I can offer her a future.

That spoilt silver spooner isn't ever going to be interested in you.

Oh, come...

The Annerby time capsule -

we need to dig it up.

It's meant to be there till 2250.

Change of plan.

We'll meet you there.

But first, further up the road here, isn't that where Lisa Pincent lived?

Do you think the bike rider was trying to kill Mrs Repton?

Not necessarily.

It could have been the lone rider in the car park at the wake.

It could be any of the bikers.

What intrigues me is if they were actually coming here.

Someone was clearly looking for something.

Question is, did they find it?

There's nothing out back, sir.

There's dirt on the frame and a smear of mud on the sill

that someone's tried to wipe clean.

But why try to cover up a break-in and then trash the place?

Good point.

Get Forensics here. Yes, sir.

Barbershop, greenhouse, tennis courts, you name it.

Dex Kirby mentioned a couple of applications, not this many.

Lisa's brother, Kyle, mentioned that Dex had been her first love.

Maybe she's still into him.

He clearly had an inside track.

Unlike some of the other Kirbys.

Here's an abusive letter from Ethan Kirby.

Calls her pretty much every name under the sun.

Over what?

No idea.

It's just a loose page.

Time to open that capsule.

I don't mean to pry, Mr Repton,

but your mother doesn't seem to be a fan of your girlfriend.

She thinks Hayley's spoilt.

That's all.

But Mum's just possessive. That's all.

It's just me and her.

And I guess she worries that I'll leave.

So, who's going to do the honours?

(SQUEAKING)

Predictions for 2250.

"We will all travel by jetpack."

"There'll be lasting peace."

Not looking good so far.

Try the envelopes underneath.

A young Dex Kirby.

And Lisa.

Hm!

(DOOR CREAKS)

Presumably, Lisa Pincent put this photograph

in the time capsule because she was besotted with a famous singer.

A famous singer she was kissing. Hm.

Which would imply that they were involved.

I did the maths, and she was a late teenager

and he must have been at least mid-30s.

So, at best, not age appropriate.

At worst, exploitative.

If she felt pressured or manipulated, then or now,

it might explain her journal entry.

Especially if there was someone that might want to silence her.

Someone who likes to keep the past in the past.

Dex Kirby certainly has some explaining to do.

Oh, sir.

You might want to see this.

Tech have just sent through the CCTV that you asked for -

from outside the florist the night of the vote.

Someone attacked Matt.

Knocked him into the cellar and locked him in.

No idea who.

I didn't see anything,

I didn't hear anything.

I was shouting down there for ages.

We were passing.

Yeah, heard Matt shouting,

came in and kicked the door down.

Presumably, the person responsible for this

is the same person who vandalised your jacket.

And the flowers, I guess.

The jacket was dropped on the doorstep

underneath some of the lilies from Dad's coffin.

Did your dad have any enemies?

No way.

Everyone loved Sam.

We'll need to have a word with Mr Jenkins alone.

Can I just ask, how come you two were passing?

We both live down the road

and I've been giving Kyle my take on Dex's early years for his biography.

I thought Dex said no to a biography.

Yeah, to an official one.

Although I haven't given up hope of changing his mind.

So I've started an unofficial one in the meantime.

We're actually here... about the window.

The night of the vote.

Just after the chapter meeting that you stormed out of.

Well, I was miffed.

You pride yourself on your codes of conduct

and then you take a metal chain to the window,

which is more than miffed.

And you lied to us.

Yeah, well, I was upset.

I lost it.

My concern is Lisa Pincent.

If you can lose your temper like that...

You know about flowers, maybe you know about herbs as well.

And you knew where your father's helmet was kept.

I swear, I don't know what you're talking about.

Where were you last night, just before nine?

Between eight and ten, I was at the chapter meeting

to discuss the postponement of the succession issue.

I gather you take minutes.

Do you take attendance details as well?

Yeah, of course. Why?

Because whoever broke into Lisa Pincent's cottage last night

at about nine couldn't have also been at your chapter meeting.

We'll need a list of everyone who was there.

The attack on Matt Jenkins,

you think someone was trying to kill him?

Someone trying to bump off the bikers one by one?

I'm not sure.

Someone clearly isn't happy with him,

but Lisa Pincent's death was planned in detail.

The attack on Mr Jenkins feels more opportunistic.

Yeah, I'll get Forensics to give the florist a once-over.

No, I hate you!

You don't listen to anyone but yourself!

I mean, do you even care what I want?

Or is this all just about keeping us under your thumb?

Watch your mouth, young lady.

Everything you have, everything is because of me.

Even that place wouldn't have happened without me.

You only did that to stop us from leaving home.

(SIGHS) You can't control us forever.

It's no wonder Mum left.

And everyone else.

I mean, you drive everyone away in the end.

I'm done.

I'm so done.

I can't wait to get out of here,

away from you, whether you like it or not.

May we come in?

We want to talk to you about your relationship with Lisa Pincent.

What relationship?

This one.

What's this?

Well, exactly.

Careful, Inspector.

I don't like what you're insinuating.

Neither will my lawyers.

We're not making accusations.

We're giving you an opportunity to explain.

It's a picture from God knows how many years ago.

I can't even remember it being taken.

Do you have any idea how many of these there were?

I appreciate that, but you're locked in an embrace and kissing.

I may be out of touch, but when did that become a crime?

It didn't, but the other person in the photograph

is now a murder victim.

And the day before she died,

she referenced this photograph in case anything happened to her.

We were friends, that's all.

Maybe it spilled over a little, and perhaps I should have known better.

So you admit you were involved?

Involved? No.

Slept with her, yes.

She was just a girl with a crush.

She wasn't just anything.

At the time, women like Lisa were throwing themselves at me.

What was I meant to do?

Behave appropriately.

And how has your involvement with Miss Pincent been since then?

She approved an awful lot of your applications.

Business-like, professional.

If that's the case, why would she reference this photograph

in her journal in the way that she did?

Now, that I can't answer.

Anything else?

Not at the moment, no.

What's the point in having all this money

if he's just going to hoard it for himself?

I know, but you have to be...

Tensions running high?

Dad was being a control freak, as usual.

He doesn't think Theo's good enough for me.

I asked him to bail him out,

and he refused,

even though he could buy the farm 10 times over.

Theo can't work any harder,

and it's not his fault

that someone is killing his livestock!

Theo doesn't want anyone's charity.

Oh, because he's being a stupid bloke!

Got to provide!

I mean, who cares?

Ironically,

considering that he's famous for behaving worse

than any human being in history.

Dad is an expert on disapproval.

Of everything.

Of me for being gay, of Hayley for falling in love with a farmer,

of Drake for being in an accident.

Why would he be disapproving of you for the accident?

Because he couldn't fix the problem by throwing money at it.

I've had a lot of expensive therapy.

But no real emotional support.

Not from Dad, anyway.

These guys were there for me.

So was Sam.

Do you blame anyone for the accident?

Lisa Pincent?

It was no-one's fault.

Someone nearly ran down Mary Repton last night.

Is she OK?

She is.

It happened about 9 o'clock.

Someone also broke into Lisa Pincent's cottage.

Possibly the same person.

Yeah, we found an abusive letter from you in the cottage.

Care to explain?

It was just about an application.

For?

This place.

Really?

The application for the barbershop was approved without question?

Yeah.

But that was only after the letter. So...

Besides, I was here last night around 9. We were working late.

And we seconded.

And I was at a chap's meeting of the MC.

Ethan Kirby was lying about that application.

Go over them again.

If it wasn't for the barbershop, what was it for?

You think Dex Kirby was telling the truth

about his involvement with Lisa Pincent?

No, I do not.

Let's talk to her brother, Kyle.

See what he has to say about her involvement with his hero.

Mrs Repton, I'm surprised you're working today

after your near-death experience last night.

No choice.

We've got to work.

Ah. Best get on.

Got to get this lot back to the pub.

Of course.

Fleur, you live out at Midsomer Barrow.

How are you finding the roadworks?

I see.

Thank you.

Where to now, sir?

Kyle Pincent. But first, follow that cleaner.

Are you two stalking me?

In a manner of speaking.

Yesterday you said that you missed Sam Jenkins' wake

because of the roadworks at Midsomer Barrow.

There are no roadworks there.

Why would you lie and say that there are?

Must have been a senior moment. (LAUGHS)

Also, when we first met, your hair was strangely flattened.

Beg your pardon?

How very rude.

And just now I noticed that you have tan lines on your wrist.

You're not a member of the motorcycle club,

but you do wear a helmet and gloves.

And you have a motorcycle licence.

We just checked.

Because our guess is...

...you're our lone biker.

It was me at the wake.

I just wanted to pay my respects.

Why?

And why in secret?

Because I'm in business with Mary.

And she's no fan of bikers.

She'd kill me if she knew I was a biker!

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand.

Pay your respects to Sam?

I love the flicks, me.

Silver Screen is a free movie every Thursday morning

for those of us over a certain age.

Turns out Sam went too.

And one day, as fate would have it,

we found ourselves side by side in a darkened cinema,

watching Some Like It Hot.

Well, call it muscle memory, but I found myself fingering his popcorn.

One thing led to another,

and let's just say it wasn't only the credits that were rolling.

(GIGGLES) He was tender and true.

And I wanted to honour that.

Tell me, how did Matt Jenkins get on with his father?

Matt idolised Sam.

But Sam always had a soft spot for Drake Kirby,

especially after the accident happened on the club's watch.

Sam felt responsible.

Mrs Barton, last night a lone biker nearly ran Mary Repton down.

Tell me about it.

She didn't stop banging on about it all day!

Ha!

It wasn't me.

No.

It was one of the Sons.

Which you know because...?

Oh, when Mary was ranting, she mentioned seeing an angel.

Thought she was going to die.

I think she just glimpsed their patch.

You said your sister said no to a lot of people in her job.

Dex definitely wasn't one of them.

Dex knew how to turn on the charm,

not least to someone who carried a torch for him.

First love and all that?

Well, it's just a personal theory,

but I think the reason Dex was so promiscuous

was because he never got over the one woman he really loved,

who rejected him.

Jules Fletcher?

Yeah, that's why I wanted to talk to her about him.

I hear the relationship was no big deal.

I think it was, to her.

And they kept each other at arm's length in the village,

but that's more about his bruised ego than anything else.

Had your sister's feelings towards Mr Kirby changed recently?

Had she mentioned feeling threatened or frightened at all?

Lisa?

No. Why would she?

Because her final journal entry suggested

that if anything happened to her,

Dex would be the reason.

Does that mean anything to you?

Nothing whatsoever.

Sorry, are you saying that Dex killed my sister?

No, we are not.

We consider everything, we conclude nothing.

Until we're sure.

Mum, what's going on?

I just had a notification about my account.

What have you done?

Something I should have done ages ago.

Think of it as divine intervention.

No, I don't want your help!

(SIGHS)

I don't want anyone's help.

I have to sort the farm my way.

And I'm going to do that right now.

What? Where are you going?

To see Dex. Why? What for?

(DOOR CLOSES) Theo!

Kyle Pincent said his sister had approved the idea of the festival.

Has a formal application been made?

Not that I've seen.

We've been looking at past applications.

Let's check what happens moving forward

now Lisa's no longer in the post.

Yes, sir.

Here's something.

The grant proposal that corresponds to Ethan Kirby's abusive letter

had nothing to do with his barbershop.

It's in support of Theo Repton.

It's to turn his farm into an artisan wool centre.

Traditional farming methods meets

Ethan's entrepreneurial grooming flair.

Rejected.

Which can't have been good for Theo Repton's stress levels.

We know he's in financial trouble.

And that he has a temper.

Arrested for lashing out at the bikers.

We need to talk to Theo.

He's gone to see Dex.

(GLASS SMASHES, CLATTERING)

(SONG PLAYS) # Of all the money that e'er I've spent

? I've spent it in good company

? And all the harm I ever done

? Alas, it was to none but me

? And all I've done, for want of wit... ?

(SCREAMS)

? To memory now

? I can't recall... ?

No sign of forced entry.

Death staged, again.

And more writing on the wall.

Is this our killer's M.O.?

Or they want us to think it is.

"Respice finem."

"Consider the end."

A reminder that we all die.

Check to see if that phrase has made its way into Shadow Slayer's lyrics.

And check Theo Repton's phone.

No fingerprints so far.

Murder weapon is the razor, I take it?

Oh, need to confirm.

But a fair assumption.

The neck wound was confident.

And precise.

The whole scene is somewhat theatrical.

Indeed.

The killer's playing with us.

Confident of not getting caught.

Arrogant, even.

Oh, you asked me to check what happens

now with the buildings and conservations applications.

Well, a couple of things came up overnight.

One, Ethan Kirby and Theo Repton made contact

with Lisa Pincent's probable replacement yesterday.

Hm. Hasty, to say the least.

See what Ethan Kirby has to say about that.

Yeah, will do.

And secondly, Jules Fletcher's application, formerly rejected,

now appears to be very much alive.

Signed and approved by Lisa Pincent.

One thing at a time.

(INDISTINCT CHATTER)

Tragic death.

They always are.

You clearly weren't keen on the victim.

He wasn't top of my list.

But just because I didn't approve of him doesn't mean I killed him.

It doesn't.

Although his mother told us he was coming here to see you.

And now he's dead.

Really? Mm.

News to me.

First I knew of it, Hayley screaming like a banshee.

Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to retreat and avoid this whole circus.

Wouldn't we all?

...speak to my colleague, OK?

Yep.

I'm very sorry about Theo.

Who would do something like that?

I gather you found his body.

Why did you go to the barbershop?

I was walking to the house and I heard music.

So I just came to take a look.

Hm.

Who has entry codes for the door?

It's just us, really.

Does your father?

No, Dad barely knows how to switch a light on.

When you last spoke to Theo, how was he?

Uh...

Stressed, but defiant, given what was happening with the sheep.

What did he say about that?

That he'd checked the feed and the water supply was next on his list.

Does Mary know what's happened?

She's been informed.

I'll speak to her when I leave here.

And Theo's father?

Just a biker who did a runner decades ago.

And that's the real reason Mary doesn't like bikers.

Forensics gave me this.

It's about the florist.

I found out who was taking over the applications process

and I gave Theo their number.

What of it?

He was desperate to convert that farm.

That was his last roll of the dice.

Why didn't you tell us this yesterday?

Because he didn't want anyone to know.

Not even Hayley, not until it was definite.

And you thought, wrongly,

that I was trying to steal my sister's boyfriend.

I wasn't.

I'm sorry.

Matt Jenkins' father, Sam, you were close.

Always were.

And doubly so since my accident.

He was there for you, like a father,

at a time when your own father wasn't.

You must have been very upset when Sam died.

I was.

Were you unhappy with the care that Sam received from his son, Matt?

What's this about?

Someone left lilies on Matt Jenkins' doorstep yesterday.

Lilies of remembrance from his father's wreath

on top of a vandalised jacket.

Hours later, Matt Jenkins was assaulted

and knocked down his cellar stairs.

So?

So, our forensics team found wheelchair tracks

in the water on the shop floor.

We know the time of the attack and can check street CCTV to confirm,

or you could save us all some time.

Just wanted to teach Matt a lesson.

He didn't step up when his father needed him.

Sam shouldn't have died.

That's not for you to judge, Mr Kirby.

Question is, did you also unleash your anger

on Lisa Pincent and Theo Repton?

I didn't, I swear.

Just Matt.

Couldn't bear to see him at the wake,

standing there like the caring, dutiful son he wasn't.

We're all fallible, Mr Kirby.

Why would I talk to you?

You didn't believe me before, you won't believe me now.

First it's the sheep, then me getting run down.

Now it's Theo.

And the graffiti in blood at the pub?

Of course it was me.

I thought it would shut them up.

How wrong was I?

Did you see anything else yesterday?

Anything unusual, untoward?

No.

Oh...

Except Dex's motorbike parked up along the lane.

Dex Kirby rides a motorbike?

Yeah.

I've seen him on it at the mansion.

What would he be doing riding it out here?

No idea.

You told us your son was on his way to see Mr Kirby.

He said he knew nothing about that.

Did Theo tell you why he was going?

To sort everything out.

(PHONE VIBRATES AND CHIMES)

Sir, Matt Jenkins has sent through a list

of people at the chapter meeting.

There's someone missing.

Indeed.

I'll speak to them.

You check Theo Repton's financials.

I'll meet you at the Kirby mansion.

But before we go, let's take a water sample from the barn.

I heard the terrible news about Theo Repton.

(SIGHS)

Tea?

Ah, no.

Yeah, his mother seems to think

that you're the mastermind behind ruining his livelihood.

His mother, God bless her, is mistaken.

No one from the club is doing anything to their sheep.

She also thinks you've got the male club members

wrapped around your little finger.

Would I?

I don't know. Would you?

About your application to convert your home,

you told me it was rejected.

Only now it seems to have been approved.

Lisa must have put it through after all.

Both of us know that isn't true,

not least because the application has gone through since Lisa's death.

Also, one of the Sons - or daughters - of Annerby

broke into Lisa Pincent's cottage,

possibly after almost knocking down Mary Repton.

What has that got to do with me?

That could have been anyone, John.

Except for the fact that at the time of the near collision,

the club members were attending a chapter meeting.

All bar one.

You.

And it's, um, DCI Barnaby.

I think you broke in and turned the place over,

looking for your original rejected application,

which you found and removed,

and then forged a new accepted one.

So?

Does it really matter?

My application was turned down unfairly.

I took steps to change that.

It's called opportunism.

It's called breaking and entering, vandalism and forgery.

Unless you think somehow you're above the law

and the rules don't apply to you.

Always were a stickler for detail.

About that, why did you break in through the window

and try to cover your tracks when you were about to trash the place anyway?

Well, I didn't.

I got in through the back.

I don't know if anyone else broke in.

Hm.

One other thing.

You never said that Dex Kirby took it badly

when you ended your relationship.

Why didn't you mention that it might still be an issue for him?

It's not the kind of thing you show off about, is it?

Breaking someone's heart.

Dex isn't happy about me singing with his kids, that's for sure.

But to their credit, they put their foot down. So did I.

There's a lot of water under the bridge.

Indeed.

So...

...do you want to cuff me now?

How did you get on with Jules Fletcher?

She is being accompanied to the station as we speak

to be charged with breaking and entering,

criminal damage and forgery.

You old romantic, you.

She wasn't the only person to break into Lisa Pincent's cottage.

Someone else did as well.

Who? And to do what?

That, Winter, is what we need to find out.

How about you?

Well, 'Respice Finem' doesn't feature in any Shadow Slayer songs.

Theo Repton's financials are interesting, though.

Yesterday, his bank account benefited to the tune of 40,000.

From where?

Tech are looking into it.

Sir?

Jules Fletcher said I was always a stickler for detail,

but I think I might have missed something.

When we saw the cleaners leaving yesterday,

Mary Repton took the bin bags around the back of the house.

Why would she do that?

Why wouldn't she put them in here?

Unless they didn't contain rubbish.

(PHONE VIBRATES)

Sir, Tech have just sent through Theo Repton's text messages.

You're going to want to see this.

The motorbike under the tarpaulin...

Drake's.

Unfortunately, it doesn't get used that much anymore.

And yet its engine is warm.

It was seen yesterday afternoon parked up at the Reptons'.

Presumably it wasn't Drake that took it there.

Was it you?

And what were you doing there?

I was taking in the view.

You said that you rarely leave home.

I broke my routine.

Free country.

You also said you didn't know that Theo Repton was coming to see you.

We've just read the text messages he sent you.

"I'm coming to see you now, you...

"How dare you...

"The world will know the truth."

The truth about what?

I don't know.

Didn't see the messages.

You didn't see the messages?

Unlike your generation, I don't look at my phone that much.

So his texts would be marked as unread.

Well, actually, I did see the messages.

Just now.

Really?

Mm.

(INDISTINCT SINGING IN DISTANCE)

? Come hither, come near

? Our tale will make clear

? A maiden's dream

? The end of the line

? His silver kiss

? A final breath

? There'll be no happy ending

? With respice finem

? There'll be no happy ending

? With respice finem... ?

Care to explain?

It's a new ballad I wrote.

When?

I gave it to the kids yesterday morning.

Before Theo Repton was killed.

"Respice finem" are the words

sprayed onto the mirror next to his dead body.

I've never heard anything so absurd.

It's a ballad.

With a lyric that echoes Theo Repton's death.

It's about a maiden and a pauper,

who gets his throat cut - the silver kiss -

and it references "respice finem".

Well, I wouldn't be singing it

if I knew that it was incriminating, would I?

Hm. Which brings us back to you, Mr Kirby.

Your bike was seen at Repton's farm.

Theo Repton was coming here to confront you.

About what?

Did it have anything to do with his livestock?

No idea what you're talking about.

I'm talking about the fact that your song seems to predict Theo's death.

How?

Well, maybe I just tapped into the zeitgeist, like great artists do.

"Times are a-changing."

"Smells like teen spirit."

"Clem's lament."

How many other people have seen or heard these lyrics?

It's just us.

Hayley?

Nope, she hasn't seen it yet.

And what about the other members of the quartet?

Jules Fletcher, Nellie Barton?

They haven't been sensing.

Whoever killed Theo Repton knew this song

and had access to the barbershop and its razors.

Logically, that means one or both of you.

How do you explain that?

Oh, I can't.

But, then, I don't have to.

You do.

Tell me, have we met before?

Not in this lifetime.

Why didn't we bring Dex Kirby in?

Because we have no hard evidence and his lawyers would run rings round us.

This all screams Dex.

The arrogance, the grandstanding, the manipulation of Lisa Pincent,

the disapproving of Theo Repton, it all points to him.

Which also means someone could be trying to frame him.

Yeah. Who though?

One of his kids, maybe?

Or one of the cleaners.

Those bin bags they took are bothering me.

Check out the current market in memorabilia

relating to Dex Kirby and Shadow Slayer.

Why, you got something you want to sell, sir?

No, I haven't, but someone else might.

Search for the unique double platinum disc of The Serpent That Speaks.

The one Dex thinks is in his attic.

Wow.

Recently sold for 30,000.

Other related items.

Selection of awards for songwriting - 5,000.

Original handwritten lyric sheets - 5,000.

Total - 40,000.

The amount deposited yesterday into Theo Repton's account.

Sorry to interrupt, but...

We have a search warrant.

Or...

The lambing sheds.

So the Angels of Annerby are anything but.

We just wanted to help Theo, who knew nothing about it.

We found the key to Dex's attic and took matters into our own hands.

It's not as if he wanted or needed the stuff.

No, but it is theft.

DS Winter.

OK.

Thanks.

Everything all right, sir?

It's all in the details, Winter.

You?

The water's been checked.

It's contaminated with a pesticide that's toxic to livestock.

Usually used to kill insects by plant collectors.

Theo wasn't good enough for Hayley.

I don't expect you to understand.

I know what's best for my children.

Why would you think that bankrupting Theo by poisoning his livestock

would solve the problem?

Hayley was never going to give him up anyway.

It wasn't Hayley I was trying to break.

It was Theo.

If he'd have gone under, he'd have ended the relationship.

He said so himself.

He wouldn't want Hayley to be stuck with a loser.

A proud man.

A great man.

A weak man.

Maybe he found out about the water supply

and he was coming here to confront me.

Well, he didn't make it, did he?

Why would I kill him when I was already ruining him?

Why would I kill Lisa Pincent when I already had her in my pocket?

About Lisa, you said you didn't care for memorabilia.

Um, "baubles and trinkets" you called it.

You might want to rethink your approach to security on that.

Tell us about the leather jacket you wore.

The one with the 'Rise Beyond' slogan.

I wore it on the Serpent Tour.

It became the iconic image.

It was everywhere.

And what became of the jacket itself?

I gave it to Lisa. A week ago.

The jacket that she was killed in.

You said you weren't close,

but you gifted her your most famous possession.

It meant nothing to me.

But you'd never given it to her before.

Why now, Desmond?

It must have been for something special.

I remember you.

I remember...

You're the bloke Jules was with.

Which doesn't matter now.

What matters is that you didn't want us to know that you had exploited

Lisa Pincent all over again, like you did all those years ago.

Why?

Because it was necessary.

To get her to block her brother's music festival.

If that would have gone ahead,

the noise for me to do a comeback would have been deafening.

Why does it matter?

Because giving her that jacket got her killed.

Someone other than you thinks they are beyond good and evil.

Her killer.

JULES: Hello!

Kyle?

(DOOR CLOSES)

Anyone home?

Kyle?

So Lisa Pincent's journal entry wasn't real?

Planted to point the finger at Dex.

And who would know how to do that?

An IT specialist.

Mr Pincent?

(WHISTLING)

Signs of a struggle.

Kyle Pincent spent his life being obsessed with Dex.

He was convinced that all he needed

was his sister's support to win over his hero.

And when she didn't give him that...

His obsession turned ugly.

Sir, the IT contracts for the Kirbys,

covering the mansion and the barber shop.

This is how he got the door codes and access to the computers.

And this isn't research for a biography, even a hatchet job.

This is a deranged rant.

This is someone losing their grip on reality.

(MOTORCYCLE REVS)

Sir, maybe someone else found those notes.

(MOTORCYCLE REVS)

Jules.

(TYRE SCREECHES)

Get out of the way!

(MOTORCYCLE REVS)

I said move!

This is over, Kyle.

I'll decide that.

Because you're the great man.

Even though you lived in Dex's shadow and your sister's.

She never let me be anything.

Always looking down on me, lording it over me, putting me in my place.

Especially when Dex asked her to.

Oh, he played her like a Stradivarius.

He called me a joke, a loser, a fantasist.

And she agreed.

So the two people you most wanted to impress humiliated you.

Which is why Dex went from hero to zero.

You pretend to the world that you still look up to him.

You defend him to his daughter.

But deep down, you plot revenge.

So you decide to frame him. (MOTORCYCLE REVS)

You steal the poison from his greenhouse.

You know that the photograph in the time capsule will look incriminating.

So you break into your sister's cottage,

you leave a fake message on her computer.

Knowing that we'll find it.

An accusation from beyond the grave.

So far, so smart.

But why Theo?

I needed more.

I was watching Dex, tracking him.

I followed him.

I couldn't believe it.

The lengths he was going to ruin his daughter's boyfriend.

If he'd poisoned Theo's livestock, who knows what else he'd do.

Like killing his daughter's boyfriend

in the style of a song he'd just written -

that you'd accessed on his computer.

What better way to incriminate him some more?

I rang Theo, told him what Dex had done.

Told him to meet me at the barber's, and we'd confront him together.

Only it never got that far.

And this? (MOTORCYCLE REVS)

So what's the plan now?

Make it look like Dex has taken revenge on his long lost love?

"The serpent that speaks."

It's all about her.

He wrote it after she dumped him.

So?

Dex will deny having anything to do with this.

He'll just say it's the work of a deranged fan.

Which it is.

This isn't about Dex.

It's about you.

I have to show him. (MOTORCYCLE REVS)

Show all of you.

What, that you're in charge?

That you're the great man?

That you matter?

Yes!

I want to be...

(MOTORCYCLE REVS)

...someone.

(ENGINE TURNS OFF)

So, I'll see you in another...

God knows how many years.

Not if you manage to keep out of trouble.

Trouble?

Oh, my middle name.

What about you?

Whatever happened to the rider on the edge of darkness?

(CHUCKLES) He saw the light.

Your wife is a lucky woman.

No.

I'm a lucky man.

Not more bikes?

Quite a lot of mopping up to do tomorrow, Winter.

We'll need to charge Dex Kirby, Drake and the Annerby Angels.

Oh, there's a bit of development there, actually, sir.

The Kirby kids are so incensed by how their father treated Theo,

they've decided to come out publicly against him.

Ah. Which he'll hate.

Unless he drops all charges against the Angels.

Oh, and Matt Jenkins,

clearly feeling very guilty about his father,

has also decided to go easy on Drake.

Less paperwork for you, I guess.

Yeah, I know.

Thought I might try and fit in a quick grooming session, actually.

You can join me if you like, sir.

No, thank you.

We're in here.

Thinking of starting a new chapter?

Oh, don't tempt me.

The Sons And Daughters Of Barnaby.

Well, Fleur's Angels, surely.

(CHUCKLES) Thank you.

Anyway, I have something to show you.

It's John's very own time capsule.

From the Leviticus days.

I've been hearing all about it.

Yeah, don't get him started. (CHUCKLES)

Let me get this straight.

You knew the Dex Kirby back in the day?

I wouldn't say we knew each other,

but he drifted into my orbit a few times.

Or vice versa.

That's not my claim to fame, though.

No, John's claim to fame is that he was in the band

that came before the better band that came before Shadow Slayer.

I guess that's about right.

Anyway, I'm going to spare you his album collection,

but there is one special item.

Two, in fact.

(GASPS)

Oh!

Oh, look at...

Look at it and weep.

You said it, sir.

Oh.

No?

Uh-uh.

Paddy!

(CHUCKLES)

It's like we're getting the old band back together.

Or a new one.

Deuteronomy, perhaps?

Where's my maracas?

(TOY SQUEAKS)

(LAUGHTER)

That's close enough.

(TOY SQUEAKING)
