Oh, Marnie, where are the eye masks?
I asked for one on every bed.
And fresh candles in the lanterns, please.
I'll go do that right now.
Thank you.
I need to know you're on top of this, Marnie.
Our guests are all influencers.
Anything less than perfect will be all over social media.
Yeah, but we have a little time before the guests arrive.
It's all right. It's all right.
(THUMPING TECHNO MUSIC IN DISTANCE)
Where's that music coming from?
Where do you think?
What are you going to do?
Dan, no.
We agreed not till after the weekend.
We've got to keep the village on side.
No, this ends now.
(DING!)
(PHONE RINGS)
(PHONE RINGING)
(THUMPING TECHNO MUSIC)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER) MAN: Let's go!
(INDISTINCT, BOISTEROUS YELLING)
...crack the target,
then I'm going to take you over to the spinning wheel,
where - drum roll, please -
you get a chance to win a special prize!
Right, so, we bend at the elbow, lean back and release.
ONLOOKERS: Yay!
Turn that music off now!
Sorry about this, lads.
I won't be a minute.
Ridiculous. Ridiculous.
How many times?
What the hell do you think you're doing?
Our first guests are about to arrive for a weekend of peace and serenity,
and you're having a rave.
And?
I've got a coachload of stags expecting a party vibe.
Our business has got just as much right to exist as yours.
No, not for much longer.
This should clarify things for you.
Oh, we've been over this.
Basil Delaunay agreed to sell us this site before he died.
No, no, no.
The only contract our lawyers found was your tenancy agreement,
which we're terminating.
Well, look again.
We agreed a price.
I signed the contract.
On the back of a fag packet, was it?
No, there's been a mistake.
I am calling your lawyers.
No, there's no mistake.
You've got three months to get out.
And just so you know, if that music goes back on, I will personally
put you on that wheel and use you for target practice.
Ah! I started to panic.
What happened?
The notice to quit came as a shock, to say the least.
The village hates us enough as it is.
This is just going to make things worse.
We don't owe the village anything.
Dan, Eden Valley Retreat is supposed to be a place of joy and light, yeah?
I mean, all he ever brought was darkness.
I just feel like he's still here,
tainting everything with his negative energy.
Take it down, will you, Dan?
With pleasure.
The first guests have just pulled up.
Right. Then let's go and greet them.
Can you quickly just check the room allocation list, please?
Yeah, looks good to me. Thanks, Marnie.
(PHONE VIBRATES)
(CHAMPAGNE CORK POPS)
(LIVELY CHATTER)
Happy birthday, Fleur.
21 again.
And that's exactly how I feel.
I'm in peak condition, physically and mentally.
I've got decades left in me yet.
I'm in constant awe of your incredible energy.
How do you do it?
Strict daily practice.
I rise at five to greet the dawn with a sun salutation.
Which is what exactly?
A series of yoga poses that warms the body and calms the mind.
Stress, negativity and anxiety melt away and I feel 18 again.
I'm not sure I want to be 18 again.
Ha!
I had a lover in Kerala once.
A yoga guru who said I was the most flexible woman he'd ever met.
(LAUGHS)
With the stamina of a wildebeest.
(SNIGGERS)
Our tantric sessions could last for days.
Mmm.
What does that mean, Dad?
Oh, more cake.
Anyone? More cake?
Now, this is your last pint, Jake.
I don't want Vera complaining I got you drunk again.
Ewan. Oop.
Usual?
I'm not here to drink.
OK.
So what's going on?
We're getting thrown out of the stable block.
After everything we've invested in that business.
No, no, they can't do that.
You've got a contract.
(SCOFFS) Turns out it wasn't worth the paper it was written on.
(GROANS) Oh, man.
Grace should never have trusted that Basil Delaunay after what he did.
She thought he was just trying to make amends.
Oh, yeah, like that man had a conscience!
What's it matter now, Mal? We're finished.
No.
They are.
What they've done to us is sacrilege.
Shutting us out, desecrating our sacred ground with their trucks.
And your father would have stood up to them, and so shall we.
Eden is going to seem more like hell when we're done with it.
Did you say Eden?
Eden Valley Retreat?
That's where I'm supposed to be, but the taxi dropped me here.
I'd turn back while you still got the chance.
(LAUGHS UNCOMFORTABLY)
I don't understand.
Bad things happen in Eden.
Didn't you read your Bible?
No.
So... you won't help me?
Any of you?
(MUTTERS)
Don't say I didn't warn you.
(CAR HORN BEEPS)
You look like you could do with a lift.
Oh, Seth?
Thank God.
I was lucky to get out of there alive.
Yeah, I sensed negative energy the moment I entered the village.
And the feelings just got stronger.
Strap in, baby.
It's going to be a bumpy ride.
Right. I'll close early.
You gather the others.
What do I tell Mum?
The less she knows, the better.
Thanks. Thank you.
Oh. Oh, Dan.
Dan.
This is Poppy Anwell, self-care and personal growth influencer.
Welcome to Eden Valley Retreat.
And Seth Bladon,
free-thinking meditation influencer with his own channel.
It's great to have you here.
You might regret saying that.
Seth has the power to see things that we can't through deep meditation.
Impressive.
Do you know, I didn't know you two knew each other.
Only from influencer events,
but when I saw Poppy stranded outside your local hostelry,
I took pity on her.
The minute I mentioned Eden, the whole pub turned on me.
It was horrible.
What have you done to them?
The locals are set in their ways.
Don't like change. But we'll win them over.
OK, this is...
Please, this is Marnie, our wellness therapist and invaluable assistant.
She's going to be checking you in and showing you to your rooms.
Yes, and if you'd like to book a treatment,
we have all of these on offer.
And there's a welcome supper in the dining room at 6pm,
followed by a forest bathing session in the Glade.
And this weekend is a digital detox,
so I'll be asking you to hand over all your devices.
You might as well shoot me now.
Oh, excuse me.
Hello.
Love and light.
(BIRD CAWS)
(THUNDERING)
(GUNSHOT) (GROANS)
(ECHOEY) I saw you through the window.
Is everything OK, Seth?
Seth?
(GASPS)
What is it?
You look terrified.
Someone was murdered in this place.
And it's going to happen again.
(THEME MUSIC)
(BIRDS TWITTERING)
Thank you for all the birthday love.
I feel very spoiled.
You know you're welcome to stay for dinner.
Jamie's treating us to a takeaway.
Oh, very kind, but I'm meeting my salsa-dancing chums
in a Cuban club in Causton,
and they really know how to party.
(LAUGHS) Hasta luego, amigos!
(LAUGHING)
(DOOR CLOSES)
That woman is a human tornado.
Well, maybe we should all be a bit more Fleur.
I mean, she certainly makes the most of every minute of every day.
And every night.
There's nothing stopping us doing the same.
What would you change, Jamie?
Um, I think I'd get out of the gym and into the countryside more.
Maybe try some wild swimming.
I've ring-fenced some time just for me.
Spa days, walking, cycling.
I'd give anything for eight hours unbroken sleep.
Maybe try fresh air and exercise over a beer on the sofa
once in a while.
I'll certainly bear that in mind.
Welcome, everyone, to your first Eden experience.
A gentle introduction into forest bathing.
This will be a slow sensory immersion in nature
to help you consciously connect to your surroundings.
So if you'd like to close your eyes
and start by taking some slow, deep breaths.
And notice the air that you breathe is shared with all the trees
in this magical space.
Breathe in.
And out.
Breathe in.
Hello?
Oh!
Hey.
I had nowhere else to go.
Colette! I'm sorry, Raven.
You need to get her out of here.
Come here, come on, come with me.
It's OK, it's OK.
(GASPS) Ooh!
Let's close our eyes and refocus on our breathing.
And notice how the air feels as it enters your body...
(RUMBLING)
Notice how you are... (BECOMES INDISTINCT) ..in the forest.
And now let's give thanks to the forest
for sharing its energy with us.
(BELL DINGS) Right. Time, gents.
I'm afraid I'm closing early due to unforeseen circumstances.
I need a room for the night.
Sorry, no convenies.
I'll pay cash.
Up front.
Double your normal rate.
Ha! If it's a triple, I might consider it.
Done.
Right, OK.
Just... fill in this form.
No, no personal details.
Are you in some kind of trouble?
I'll need a key.
Take it or leave it.
Right.
I'll show you to your room.
Follow me.
Like I can't breathe.
OK, just grab a seat.
Sit down.
Are you on anything?
No.
I need to know, Colette.
I swear.
It's my boyfriend. He's, uh...
He threatened to kill me. Oh.
Why do I keep going for the same
gaslighting psychopath every single time?
I, um...
I need your help, Raven.
Listen to me.
Your body is in flight response
and you're experiencing chronic anxiety and stress.
And right now, you need total peace and quiet.
Yeah.
Now, I can help you find it, but not here.
Oh, this is beautiful, Ray.
It reminds me of the forest in Ecuador when we did Ayahuasca.
(LAUGHS)
You went completely crazy.
Thought the shaman was a devil.
Tried to kill him.
That was wild.
Yeah, well, that's not me anymore.
Dan doesn't know about any of it, so...
OK, you can trust me.
My lips are sealed.
What are we doing here anyway?
Oh, you need to address your trauma.
And the forest has an incredible power to heal.
The trees release phytoncides into the air,
which are known to lower cortisol levels, reduce stress, boost mood.
It's cool. Mm.
I always come to the cabin when I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
Ah!
The glazed roof allows you to lie in bed,
staring at the stars with zero light pollution.
And everyday concerns, they just... slip away.
And you allow yourself to reconnect with the universe.
Ah.
Come on. Come on.
But first, I recommend an ice bath
to reset your breathing and engage your natural resilience.
I'll stay with you, and I'll take you through a guided meditation.
Honestly, I'm feeling so much more relaxed already,
and you should get back to your guests.
You sure? Mm-hm.
Right.
But there is... one other reason why I came.
Someone's been asking questions.
You know, about us.
Right.
Well, you need to rest and talk about it in the morning.
OK?
(EERIE SCREECHING)
(GUNSHOT) (GRUNTS)
(GASPS)
Who's there?
Hello?
You have got to stop calling me.
I've told you, I'm not gonna change my mind.
Marnie, have you seen Seth Bladon?
Uh, no, sorry.
And we need more cacao in the studio.
Once you've done that, you can go home.
OK, thanks, Dan.
OK.
(CHANTING) Mother, heal us.
Mother, heal us.
Great Mother Tree, ancient watcher of this grove,
we stand here in reverence to thy mighty presence, and pledge a vow,
a sacred vow, that never again shall we be torn asunder by any man!
So mote it be.
(CHANTING) Mother, heal us. Mother, heal us.
Mother, heal us. Mother, heal us.
Mother, heal us.
(BREATHES DEEPLY)
(WIND CHIMES RATTLE)
(MUFFLED SCREAMING)
(WATER BUBBLING)
"Eden Valley Retreat, where nature is our medicine."
Yeah, I'll stick to paracetamol, sir.
Oh, willow bark was the precursor to aspirin.
We can't afford to dismiss the healing power of nature, Winter.
Didn't take you as new age, sir.
I may wear a suit,
but I've always been open to alternative ways of thinking.
What, like Fleur?
(LAUGHS) I wouldn't go that far.
You know, I think she's onto something.
This morning, I swapped out the gym for a 5km mindful walk in the woods,
and I feel amazing.
Oh, I did mindful getting Betty out of bed in time for her dance class,
and I need a lie down.
What exactly is Eden Valley?
It's a high-end retreat for the very rich,
owned by skincare guru Raven Delaunay.
She sold her botanicals brand for millions and got into wellness.
This weekend was supposed to be a soft opener
for influencer guests only.
Where are they now?
Up at the main house.
I asked uniformed to make sure they stayed there.
What's the story?
First officers on the scene queried the death as unnatural.
Fleur suspected foul play, so called us in.
So, it seems like there's trouble in paradise.
(INDISTINCT VOICE MESSAGE)
Leave your message after the tone. (BEEP)
The police are everywhere.
What's going on? (KNOCK AT DOOR)
SETH: Poppy, are you OK?
I thought I heard voices.
Must have been outside.
I'm just about to have a shower.
I'll catch you later.
Thank you.
Uh-huh.
How exactly did she die?
Asphyxiation, but not from drowning.
A livid groove across the victim's neck suggests that something
was held against her throat
to cut off her airway before she was submerged.
Any idea what the killer used?
Doesn't look like a ligature mark.
I'd say it was something hard, a metal bar or similar.
Time of death?
That's harder to gauge because of her exposure to cold water.
I'll have a better idea once I've got her back to the lab.
Ask uniform to search the area for a possible murder weapon.
Sir.
I understand you found her, Miss Delaunay?
Can you tell me exactly what happened?
I, um, I came to see how she was.
And I found her in the bath.
I knew with the dangers of cold water
I should never have left her on her own.
You mustn't blame yourself, Raven.
She was so vulnerable, Dan.
It's my fault.
It's my fault that she's drowned.
Oh, she didn't drown, Miss Delaunay.
That's why we're here.
She was murdered.
What was the nature of your relationship, Miss Granville?
Well, we met as students. And we were close for a while.
But then I hadn't seen her for a few years.
And now I'm never going to see her again.
I just... Dan.
You can see she's traumatised.
Can't this wait?
For now.
But there will be more questions later.
And we'll need to talk to everyone who was here last night.
You said it was a tragic accident.
That's what we assumed.
But the police have asked that no one leave the property.
So we're all suspects?
They would like to interview everyone that was here.
That's all I know.
Well, where's Raven?
She's taking time to process things.
Colette was a dear friend of hers,
and it's all come as a terrible shock.
Excuse me.
You said something dreadful was going to happen last night.
And you were right.
And that darkness that overwhelmed me, it's still here.
I'm just a bit confused.
When Ms Granville arrived, I allocated her the Beach Room,
not the Dark Sky Cabin.
Is there a problem?
No, it's just someone's altered it on the system after she died.
Which the police don't need to know about.
It's not relevant to what happened.
And it could lead to some awkward questions.
So if anyone asks,
I brought the guest back from the forest bathing session
and I didn't leave the house again.
But you did. I saw you.
Our investors are going to need reassurance, OK?
Which means protecting the Eden brand without any unnecessary distractions.
I hope we can rely on your total loyalty, Marnie.
Yes, of course.
Offer the guests free drinks, treatments,
anything they want -
we need to keep them on side.
I still can't believe it.
Ewan's just got back.
Let me know if you hear anything else.
Mum, what is it?
I saw a police car heading towards the retreat.
So I phoned Jane at the shop.
She says it's all over the village.
What is?
Someone's been murdered at Eden.
I'm sorry to push you, but we need to find whoever did this.
Your statement could help us do that.
What exactly happened when Miss Granville arrived?
Um... She seemed very upset.
So I brought her in here.
And then I took her over to the Dark Sky Cabin.
What time was that?
About 8:00, 8:30.
Then I left there and came back here approximately 15 minutes later.
Why was she staying so far away from the house?
She needed to de-stress.
And the cabin's been designed as a calming space.
Do you know why she was so agitated?
Oh, Colette, she was... she was troubled.
An addict, a history of toxic relationships with men.
She did say, though, that someone had threatened to kill her.
Did she give a name?
No.
No, I'm afraid not.
Anything else?
Yeah.
Yeah, she said someone was asking questions
about me, our... our friendship.
But you know, I just, I didn't want to get into it with her last night.
I thought it would fuel her anxiety,
and Colette could be so... unreliable.
Do you have Ms Granville's phone?
No, it was a digital detox.
When I asked her to hand it over,
she said she didn't have one with her.
And what about her number?
Mm... Uh... Yeah.
Yeah, I have it somewhere.
I'm not sure it's the current one.
As I said, we'd lost touch.
Thank you.
Well, that's all for now, Ms Delaunay.
Get this number tracked now.
We need to find that phone.
Not like you to miss breakfast.
We've got that team building session booked in.
They want to do laser tag, paintball, later axe iron.
There's a lot to set up.
Let me see that.
You've been poaching again.
You promised me.
I've kept that promise.
Well, where'd you get that?
Broke a glass.
You left home at 6.
And you didn't get back until 1.
Where were you, Ewan?
It's probably best you don't know, Mum.
If anyone asks, I was at home with you.
I won't ask any more questions, but the police might.
You need to get your story straight.
Whatever that story is, I'll back you all the way.
You know that.
And after the forest bathing session?
I walked the guests back to the house.
What time was that?
It was about 8:45.
Raven joined us about 9.
And all the other guests were accounted for?
All apart from Seth Bladon.
He disappeared at the end of the session
and came back when we were serving cacao in here.
What time was that?
It was about 9.
But as far as I remember, no one left the building after that.
Any way of verifying that?
Well, our target clientele demand complete privacy.
So there are no surveillance cameras on site.
(SCOFFS)
How convenient for our killer.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
No CCTV, no phones.
We'll just have to rely on good old-fashioned policing.
So far, it seems Ms Delaunay and Mr Usher's accounts tally up.
Well, that's what they'd like us to believe.
I sensed your imminent arrival.
Do, come in.
You have a cool blue energy, Detective Chief Inspector.
Clearly a man of knowledge, accuracy, reflection, and analysis.
I'd take that, sir.
Yeah, we understand you left the main group last night, Mr Bladon.
Can you tell us why?
I was drawn by dark energy.
Felt compelled to follow its call.
I'm not sure I understand.
Because you're a detective who views the world with scepticism,
seeking the truth through evidence, proof, and hard facts.
And you...?
I'm a master meditator
whose mind is attuned to subtle energies
not available to the five senses.
This allows me to see colours and lights invisible to others.
The first time I felt dark energy was in the village.
What happened?
I was driving past the pub when I saw Poppy.
She looked really shaken, so I stopped the car.
She had asked for directions to Eden,
but the locals were extremely hostile.
Why?
You'll have to ask her that.
And where did this dark energy lead you last night?
Deep into the woods, to a place I'd seen before.
I believe it's called the Sacred Grove.
When was this?
In a vision.
I knew something terrible had happened in that place.
Many years ago, an act of extreme violence.
I sensed it was going to happen again, and I was right.
But I appreciate that would be hard to prove in court.
Hm.
You were in the grounds around the time of the murder.
Did you see or hear anything that seemed unusual?
I thought I heard someone in the trees.
And what time was this?
Around 9.
I called out, but no one answered.
(LINE RINGS)
You have reached the voicemail messaging service for...
(BEEP)
Hi, yeah, um, it's me.
We need to talk about last night.
The landlord said something about turning Eden into hell,
like there was some sort of plan.
Hm.
Going back to the events of last night,
did you notice anything that seemed strange?
After they'd served the cacao, I came back here.
When I went to close the curtains, I noticed someone outside,
a hooded figure, just there.
What exactly were they wearing? A rain jacket, a hoodie?
No, it was a long, dark cloak, like a monk's.
Did you see their face?
No, sorry.
Anything else that might distinguish them?
Uh, yellow boots.
That's the only thing I can think of.
I stayed at the house whilst the guests were in the forest.
Dan and Raven asked me to help serve out the cacao,
and then I walked home.
What time was this?
Around 10 past 9.
And after the session,
everyone except Mr Bladon was back at the house?
Yes, and as far as I know, no one left after that.
So you're a local, Ms Ingles?
Yes, I was born here.
We understand there's some hostility from the village towards the retreat.
Oh, not from me.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to work here.
Hm. And did you notice anyone or anything unusual when you left?
I saw light passing through the trees.
That didn't worry you?
I just assumed they were poachers.
We've had issues with them recently,
but I wasn't about to get involved - I probably know half of them.
Hm.
Anything else?
There was a car parked outside the gate.
No one in it, though. I thought that was a bit odd.
Can you describe it?
4x4, black, I think.
Oh, thank you, Ms Ingles. You've been very helpful.
If we can let the guests know that Raven and I will be holding
a breathwork session in the manor studio in 15 minutes.
So we're carrying on as normal?
None of this has anything to do with us,
and we need the guests to know that.
Sir?
Uniform found a tracker on Ms Granville's car.
Classic move of a controlling partner.
We need to know who put it there.
And locate the owner of that 4x4.
It could have been that cloaked figure
Poppy Anwell saw from her window,
or whoever Seth Bladon heard in the woods.
Or says he did to cover his tracks.
You think he's lying, sir?
He left the group just before the murder took place.
He was alone and had opportunity.
(PHONE CHIMES) What's the motive, then?
That's not so obvious yet.
Sir, Digital have traced Ms Granville's phone.
It's been found in the undergrowth about 15 miles from here.
We need to know everything that's on it.
In the meantime,
let's find out if any strangers arrived in the village last night.
I suggest we talk to the landlord of the pub.
They always know everything about... everything.
Emotional upheaval normally goes hand in hand with higher stress levels.
And when we're stressed, we breathe differently.
We need to realign our breathing into a more consistent pattern
to bring us back to balance.
So if you could close your eyes, and we will breathe in for five.
One, two, three, four, five.
And out for three.
One, two, three.
And repeat.
Listen, you need to get yourself together, OK?
The guests are anxious enough as it is.
I just keep seeing her eyes staring up at me
from beneath the water, judging me.
Some madman followed her here.
Nothing to do with you or any of us, OK?
It's just Eden is supposed to be a sanctuary.
We'll get through this.
Trust me.
There's three black 4x4s right here, sir.
Unhelpfully, a very common car.
If one of these plates matches someone on the database,
we might have a lead.
We could do with a bit of luck.
As you might have already heard,
a guest was murdered at the retreat last night.
Yeah, that's all anyone's talking about.
Does the name Colette Granville mean anything to you?
No.
We understand you're not a fan of Eden Valley, Mr Culpepper.
How do you mean?
We have a witness who claims
that you warned her not to go there last night.
She must have got the wrong end of the stick.
I was just saying I wasn't too keen on all that wellness mumbo jumbo.
But you know, each to their own.
Oh, and before you ask, I didn't go anywhere near Eden last night.
What did you do, Mr Culpepper?
Well, the pub was quiet after 7, so I closed early.
Watched some TV and then went to bed.
Do you have any guests who could confirm that?
Just the one.
He said he was going out for the evening, so I gave him a key.
We'll need his details.
He didn't give me any, just a handful of cash.
Yeah, yeah, I know it's not exactly kosher,
but business isn't exactly booming.
Where is he now?
In the stock.
You can ask him yourself.
One of the 4x4s has gone, sir.
Good job you photographed them.
Whoever this is, they're really not keen to talk to us.
Raven Delaunay claims that Ms Granville was alive when she left,
but we only have her word for that.
Old friends share secrets, Winter.
Was there something from their past
that Ms Delaunay didn't want anyone else to know?
It's possible.
Ms Delaunay was telling the truth about a dangerous boyfriend.
Digital managed to access Ms Granville's phone data.
As you can see here, sir,
the last messages she received were extremely abusive.
Sir.
Thank you.
And all sent by this man, Arlo Read.
And the 4x4 we're looking for is registered in the same name,
as is the tracker that we found on Ms Granville's car.
And the landlord confirmed that he was the man
that stayed there last night.
What do we know about Mr Read?
He was charged with coercive controlling behaviour two years ago,
but his accuser backed down.
Any history of violence?
No, but it's not uncommon for things to escalate
when a victim tries to leave.
As in this case. (PHONE CHIMES)
Sir, uniform have followed the 4x4 into a woodland area just outside
Thassingham.
The vehicle's abandoned, but the engine's still warm.
Then he can't have got far.
Yeah.
There's nothing of interest in the car,
and no sign of anyone when they arrived.
Looks like there's a track through here.
Why don't you see where it leads?
OK, so this is the two-handed technique.
It's very simple.
You put two hands on the axe, grip it lightly, and throw.
(CHEERING)
Now, the axe has been modified for axe throwing,
so it doesn't require much force.
Um...
Give it a go. See how it feels.
Remember, stay in the lane, have fun, and I'll be back in a minute.
All right?
What, you've been avoiding me, Ewan?
No. Why?
Because the police have been asking questions about the murder.
So?
I've got nothing to hide.
I know I haven't, but you've got some explaining to do.
(BRANCH CRACKS)
(GRUNTS)
(BIRDS CAW)
Winter.
Winter, are you OK? What happened?
The track ended here, and HE must have been waiting.
Uniform are looking for him.
Do you need an ambulance?
I don't think so, sir, surprisingly.
Nice of you to join us, Mr Read.
It's not what you think.
Then do enlighten us.
When I heard Colette had been murdered, I knew I'd be a suspect,
so I panicked.
How did you end up here?
One of your cars was tailing me.
I took a turn up a track to try and lose them,
but it was a dead end, so I ran.
Innocent men don't run.
OK, so I'm a coward, but I didn't kill Colette.
Why would I?
I loved her.
We've seen your loving texts, Mr Read.
You threatened to kill her if she didn't do as you asked.
We know that you were tracking Ms Granville's car,
which is how you knew she was at Eden Valley.
A witness saw a 4x4 similar to yours
parked by the gate around the time of the murder.
I didn't do anything wrong.
I swear to God.
Why don't you talk us through exactly what happened last night?
I went to find Colette, just to talk.
What time was that?
Around 9.
I found the car, but there was no sign of her or the other guests.
I couldn't understand it. And then?
I left.
And that's the truth.
I didn't hurt Colette.
Look, I've never hurt anyone.
(PHONE VIBRATES) Well, you hurt my detective sergeant.
Fleur's got something for us.
Take him back to the station.
A broken wind chime has been found in undergrowth close to the scene.
And it was missing...
...this.
And it's the perfect match to the groove in the victim's throat.
Which suggests spontaneous rather than premeditated attack.
The killer was just grabbing whatever was at hand.
Any news on time of death? (SCOFFS)
Cold water makes it far more complex to pin down,
but we're getting there.
Arlo Read's messages
expressed his outrage at her defiance for triggering an escalation.
He'd rather kill her than let her go.
His controlling behaviour is completely indefensible.
But scratch the surface, and we're all cavemen at heart.
With some exceptions.
Why are you looking at me?
It's hard to envisage you in an animal skin loincloth
wielding a club.
(LAUGHS)
Winter, on the other hand...
So, vengeful man kills errant lover in a fit of rage.
It's what you would have called back in the day an open and shut case.
But is it really that straightforward?
As Sherlock Holmes once said,
"There's nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact."
What's bothering you, sir?
Well, Arlo Read admits that he found Miss Granville's car,
but says he had no idea where she was,
which is plausible given the size of the estate.
Seth Bladon thought that he heard someone at the Sacred Grove at the
same time that Arlo Read claims he was back up at the house.
So if they're both telling the truth,
then there must have been someone else out there.
Winter, I think it's time we checked out the Sacred Grove.
(BLOWS) OK.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
That man is consumed by darkness.
What?
You can actually see it?
As clearly as I see you, and you're hiding something.
You're scared.
(SCOFFS) Yeah, we're all scared, Seth.
Someone's been murdered.
Dan, I'm not sure I'm ready for this.
Remember what we said.
You'll be fine.
OK.
(BOTH BREATHE DEEPLY)
Um... (CLEARS THROAT)
Good morning, everyone.
As you can imagine, I needed some time and space to recalibrate,
so thank you all for your patience.
We'll be moving to the garden studio for a sound-bathing experience.
This will help calm any stress or anxiety you might be feeling.
(SCOFFS) It's going to take more
than a few tinkles on a triangle to do that.
The power of sound-bathing
lies in its ability to promote deep relaxation and healing,
something I think we all need right now.
But first, it's my pleasure to deliver some positive news.
A man has been detained by the police for questioning.
So we're free to go?
He hasn't been charged yet, but it's just a matter of time.
If you'd like to follow me.
He's involved in this somehow.
I know he is.
According to the map,
this path is the old right-of-way to the Sacred Grove.
Looks like it's been recently fenced off.
I don't think this damage has been done by squirrels.
That sign looks new.
Whoever did this really isn't happy about being shut out.
That's a wildlife camera.
I thought there wasn't any surveillance here.
Ah, good spot, Winter.
What does all this mean, sir?
Sarah investigated something like this with the History Society.
As far as I remember, they are offerings
that hold a spiritual significance of some kind.
Oh.
You need to look at this, sir.
It's Basil Delaunay.
(RESONATING VIBRATIONS)
Miss Delaunay, we need to talk to you, and it can't wait.
Stay in the moment, everyone.
We'll carry on once peace is restored.
Both of you.
What did I tell you?
Dan Usher is a dark soul masquerading in the light.
He can't hide his demons from me. Or the police, it seems.
But your negative energy is aimed at poor old Raven.
What has she done to deserve it?
Nothing.
You must be losing your touch.
(LAUGHS) I'm never wrong, babe.
We understand this is a portrait of your grandfather, Ms Delaunay.
We found it nailed to a tree in the sacred grove.
I left it by the bin.
Someone must have found it.
What was it doing there?
Well, it made me feel uneasy, so I asked Dan to take it down.
Have you any idea who might want to attack his portrait like this?
I mean, my grandfather's alcoholism made him very unpopular.
It resulted in him being estranged from his family and the village.
We've been trying to build bridges, but the negative feelings run deep.
Are you also aware
that a section of a new boundary fence has been torn down?
What?
No.
Our estate manager did mention it this morning,
but I didn't tell Raven because I knew it would upset her.
You didn't think to bring this to our attention?
It's a criminal offence which could be related to the investigation.
And we found this.
You said there were no cameras on the property.
Oh, that was installed by the Bird Conservation Charity.
That has nothing to do with us.
You've already arrested a man on suspicion of murder.
Why are you coming for us?
No one's been charged, Mr Usher.
Until then, all lines of investigation will remain open.
We understand.
We'll leave it there... for now.
Could I talk to you for a moment?
Another one of your visions, Mr Bladon?
Not exactly, but it is connected to my transcendental abilities.
Go on.
Since last night, Dan Usher's energy
has become increasingly negative and destructive.
What exactly are you saying?
That he's deeply entangled in all of this, and not in a positive way.
Poppy Anwell is also on my radar, but her energy is harder to read.
We'll bear that in mind, Mr Bladon.
Have you seen Raven?
She went out for a walk about an hour ago.
Where?
She didn't say.
Sorry, Dan, but you'll have to go.
I've got an acupuncture session booked.
You seem nervous, Marnie.
I hope you've been sticking to our little bargain.
Yes, of course.
Good.
Would you like to come in just this way, please?
I haven't got time for this.
Please, please, I need to talk to you.
What more is there to say?
I never wanted any of this, Grace.
Grace.
Look, we've been under a lot of pressure from our investors.
You seriously expect me to feel sorry for you?
No, no, no, of course not.
Look, we have a lot more in common than you think.
(LAUGHS SCOFFINGLY)
Look, your family have suffered at the hands of my grandfather,
just as my mother's family did.
I'm just glad I never met him.
But you're happy to inherit his house and his land and his assets.
You OK, Mum?
Look, I know you don't trust me, but if you'd just hear me out, please.
I've been talking to the lawyers about the possibility of excluding
the stable block and the land from any expansion plans.
Why should I believe a word you say?
I think you should go.
Ah, sir.
Arlo Read admits that he came to the retreat, but he's adamant
he had nothing to do with the murder.
We'll be charging him with assault,
but so far there's no evidence to connect him to the scene,
or anyone else for that matter.
Sir, the, um, wildlife camera.
It was motion sensitive.
There's a couple of files that might be of interest.
There's this one, 2046.
Oh, Poppy Anwell saw a similar figure from her window.
Mm. Can you zoom in?
So, Mal Culpepper wasn't tucked up in bed after all.
Mm. And there's this one, sir.
They're walking in the opposite direction.
Don't appear to be part of the group.
Can you sharpen the image?
I can ask Digital to try.
Well, let's pay Mal Culpepper a visit in the morning.
We need to know why he lied to us.
Mm.
Ah, Ewan.
Raven Delaunay came to the stable block to talk to Mum.
And?
She wanted us to know that it's the investors that want us out, not her.
There's nothing that she can do to change their minds.
I don't care what she says.
Yeah, but Mum does.
She's at breaking point, Mal.
She keeps talking about making a fresh start somewhere else.
But your family have lived here for generations.
We have no future here, Mal.
The Delaunay's have made sure of that.
I mean, what's to stay for?
You know, you said you knew nothing about the murder.
You swore to me. I don't.
Then why the sudden U-turn?
I mean, last night you were up for a fight,
and now you're talking about leaving for good.
Now, I'm sorry. Something doesn't smell right.
Think what you like, but I'm telling the truth.
Right, well, if you've got nothing to hide, then stand your ground.
Because that's what your dad would have done.
I've got to go.
Look, come to the hub at half seven.
We can talk more then.
DAN: We're nearly there, Poppy. (SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)
Seth Bladon is on to you.
I saw him talking to the police.
Nothing that charlatan says will stand up in court.
But can I trust you, Dan?
I've been watching you with Raven.
I think you're still in love with her.
I've got to play the game, or she'll get suspicious.
You looked so beautiful in the studio.
You have no idea how much I wanted to kiss you.
Nothing's stopping you now.
Where's Dan?
I can't find him anywhere.
No idea.
I haven't seen him in a while.
Well, he's scheduled to take the guests on a forest walk,
so he can't have gone far.
(THUMPING TECHNO MUSIC)
(SIGHS)
They are deliberately provoking us now.
I need to find Dan before he does something stupid.
I thought a nice red would go well with the lamb.
You're on a wellness kick, remember?
Ah. Water will be nice too.
Mm-hm.
What was it you wanted to ask me about?
You remember the trees you looked into with the History Society?
Their branches were decorated with all sorts of things.
Where was that?
Um... That was in Woodland, near Badger's Drift.
There were ribbons and feathers as offerings to the dead ancestors,
mirrors as portals to another world, and bells to ward off evil.
It was all very clandestine.
And why the cloak and dagger?
Well, at one time, pagan traditions were forbidden by the Church.
They continued to be passed down through generations
to the same local families.
They called them forest guardians.
Hm. And do they have a particular faith or philosophy?
Well, they worship nature.
Abhor violence to others.
Pacifism is a core tenet of their beliefs.
There's a similar group near Hensley Weald.
They worship in a place called the Sacred Grove.
I could look into it for you, if you like.
(CHUCKLES) I was hoping you'd say that.
(THUMPING TECHNO MUSIC) Ewan!
(TURNS OFF MUSIC)
Ewan!
Thank you.
Sorry to interrupt your evening, sir,
but I knew you'd want to see this.
Who's the victim?
Mal Culpepper.
What was he doing here?
No idea.
Dan Usher came to complain about the music
and got a lot more than he bargained for.
It's just this way, sir.
Just when you think you've seen it all.
It's all pretty familiar to me.
I was a knife-thrower's assistant once.
In an impalement act.
Rodrigo only got too close for comfort
when he'd been on the tequila.
This has got to be a wind-up.
I can show you the scars, if you like.
Could we possibly get back to the victim?
If you insist.
The scars are impressive.
What do we know so far?
Looking at the blood trail,
he was struck by the axe over there
and dragged to the wheel by the assailant.
As a result, it's highly likely
the killer's DNA has been transferred to the victim's body.
Time of death?
Unclear as yet, but he was wearing this - a pacemaker ID bracelet.
Peter? Yep?
Data from the device should give us a precise time of death.
Excellent. Keep us updated.
Where is Mr Usher now?
I asked him to wait up by reception.
He seemed genuinely shocked.
Hi, sir.
What were you doing here, Mr Usher?
We had a bit of a run-in yesterday.
They were playing music at a million decibels,
and I told them there'd be trouble if they did it again.
So you came back to teach them a lesson?
Our guests have suffered enough.
I couldn't just ignore it.
What happened when you arrived?
There was music playing, but no one was here.
And then I saw blood.
And then I found him.
It was horrific.
How well did you know Mr Culpepper?
Barely at all.
He had a problem with the new boundary,
but so did most of the village.
How did you find that out?
At a parish council meeting.
Ewan Boase was particularly hostile.
It's him you should be talking to.
You think he set you up?
Why else put that music on?
He knew it'd get me back here.
But there was no, um, bad blood between you and Mr Culpepper?
You're sure of that?
Absolutely.
We'll need your phone, Mr Usher, just to verify that.
(SIGHS)
What are you thinking, sir?
Mr Usher claims he had minimal contact with Mal Culpepper.
Will his phone records tell the same story?
And let's see what Ewan Boase has to say.
I have no idea why that music was playing, honest to God.
And what was Mr Culpepper doing at the stable block?
I'd arranged to meet him there at 7:30.
So why didn't you?
Um, my car wouldn't start.
I tried to call Mal, but it went through to voicemail.
And where were you at the time, Mrs Boase?
In my room.
Ewan called me down to help jumpstart the car, but no joy.
Who else knew that Mr Culpepper was going to be at the stable block?
No one.
That's why his murder doesn't make any sense.
Everyone loved Mal.
He was like a father to Ewan.
He's already lost one of those.
Dan.
He had it in for everyone in Hensley, especially Mal.
He even threatened to put me on the wheel
if we refused to do as he said.
And he's got an explosive temper.
Everyone's seen it.
Can you tell us your whereabouts on the night of the first murder?
We were here.
But what's that got to do with Mal's death?
It's just routine, Mrs Boase.
If you, uh, think of anything else, do call.
Ewan.
Sir, Arlo Read has been charged with aggravated assault
and released on bail.
There's no way he's our murderer.
We allowed ourselves to be blindsided, Winter.
We need to go over every detail with fresh eyes.
Dan Usher had history with Mal Culpepper,
and we now know Mr Usher has an explosive temper.
According to Ewan Boase,
he threatened him with the same manner of death.
He could be lying, sir.
But why?
Mal Culpepper was a close family friend.
Why would he want to kill him?
Did he know something about Ewan Boase that we don't?
It's possible, but what?
Thanks.
Grace Boase has called the desk.
Their mechanic says that water had been put in the petrol tank.
So someone really didn't want Ewan Boase to get to that meeting.
The question is who.
Sir, the plot thickens.
Ms Ingles wants to meet us at the pub, and she's with Ewan Boase.
Seems that Mal Culpepper was just as popular as Grace Boase claimed.
But what's his murder got to do with Colette Granville?
If we could just work out what connects the two victims,
we might start getting somewhere.
Sir.
Looks like we've found our cloaked mystery man.
Where's Marnie? I've been trying to call her.
I've just found this.
It's her resignation letter.
We no longer feel safe here, so we're leaving.
But the police have asked that you stay.
I don't think you understand.
We don't feel safe with you.
Seth, Seth, the murders have nothing to do with us.
If you could see what I see, you'd leave too.
This isn't over yet.
All right, OK. Where's Poppy?
She's the only one who decided to stay.
I wonder why.
And just so you know, she really doesn't like you, Raven.
What does he mean?
You've got to stop him, Dan.
Why? The man's a complete fantasist. Let him go.
If we don't get him back on side,
it's going to be all over social media,
and our investors will lose faith, and Eden will be finished.
So, please.
I'll take care of it, Raven.
(HUFFS)
We were childhood sweethearts.
Always thought we'd get married,
but when Marnie took the job at Eden,
I saw it as a betrayal.
It was them or me.
Yeah, well, Eden was a big opportunity.
I couldn't just turn it down.
Dan made me feel valued, like a key member of the team.
But then the day after the murder, he asked me to lie.
About what?
Well, he said if the police asked,
I was to say that he never left the retreat
after the forest bathing session, but he did.
Did he say where he went?
No, and when I challenged him,
he made it pretty clear that I'd lose my job
if I didn't do as he said.
Why didn't you leave then?
Well, I had no reason to suspect him.
It seemed pretty obvious that the man you arrested was the killer.
But when I heard Mal was dead,
I thought Dan must be involved somehow.
I'm just lucky that Ewan took me back.
Do you think Ms Delaunay could be involved, too?
Oh, no, no, no.
He's lying to her, too.
I overheard him with Poppy Anwell.
It seemed like they were much more than just good friends.
We need to talk to her. Mm-hm.
There's something you need to see first.
You're the first non-Guardians to ever enter this place,
but there's no point in hiding anything now.
And what exactly is the role of a Guardian?
To protect the Sacred Grove.
It's a deeply spiritual place to all of us.
Which is why being denied access is such a problem.
Mal was lead Guardian as my father was before him.
He couldn't just do nothing.
And he made the decision to pull down the fence?
We all agreed it was the right thing to do.
But you were also seen up at the main house that night.
Your boots identified you.
Placing you close to the murder scene.
What were you doing there?
Oh, M-Marnie wasn't taking my calls.
I just wanted to talk, but I couldn't find her.
But I swear on my mother's life, I didn't do anyone any harm.
None of us did.
Is he telling the truth?
Well, it sounds plausible, but a lie often does.
Wait, wait!
I forgot to give you these.
This is another thing that Dan didn't want you knowing.
This is the original guest room allocation,
and this is the one that they gave you.
Dan changed them in the system the morning after the murder.
Well, thank you, Miss Ingles. That's very helpful.
Hmm.
What did he change?
The original list puts Raven Delaunay in the Dark Sky Cabin.
What if the killer approached from behind?
The two women had the same length hair, the same hair colour.
The killer's target was never Colette Granville.
It was Raven Delaunay.
(PHONE CHIMES) Sir.
Tech have done a search into Dan Usher.
Turns out that the retreat business is in his name for tax purposes,
but he's also the sole beneficiary of the entire estate
in the event of her death.
Giving him motive.
Is Poppy Anwell his partner in crime?
Nothing in the phone records to back that up.
But they do reveal the history
of vitriolic texts between him and Mal Culpepper,
including blatant threats to life.
Hmm.
He said he hardly knew him.
What else is he hiding?
Most of the guests have left, I'm afraid.
When we heard about the second murder, well, we couldn't stop them.
That's not why we're here, Mr Delaunay.
New information has come to light which suggests that Colette Granville
wasn't the killer's target.
It was you.
Dan, the police need to talk to us.
It seems we've had this all wrong from the start.
Meaning what, exactly?
Ms Ingles gave us a copy of the original guest room list.
Ms Delaunay was scheduled to be in the Dark Sky cabin,
not Colette Granville.
You swapped Ms Delaunay's name for Ms Granville's after her murder.
Why would you do that?
I thought it would avoid any confusion.
Or any difficult questions?
It seemed obvious to everyone, including you,
that her lunatic boyfriend came after her.
What does it matter?
Because you gave us false information, Mr Usher.
And it's not the only time you lied.
Your phone records reveal a history of threatening texts
from you to Mal Culpepper, some threatening violence.
You told us you hardly knew him,
when in reality, he was hell-bent
on destroying the business you have so much invested in.
I went to the stable block because of the music.
I told you that.
Yeah, I checked that with both Ms Ingles and Ms Delaunay.
And they both said that you went missing before the music started.
That's not true.
Where were you then?
Poppy said she had some problems with her shower.
Asked if I could check it out.
Ms Ingles also suspected
that you were in a relationship with Poppy Anwell.
(SCOFFS) That's ridiculous.
(KNOCKS AT DOOR) Sir?
Oh, I've ordered a search of this office.
We'll need your laptop, Mr Usher.
Not without a warrant.
We'll be in touch.
I reckon Mr Usher's got some pretty shady content on that laptop.
Prioritise the search of his hard drive.
He's running out of places to hide.
Keep this between ourselves.
She can't prove anything. OK?
Oh, you're positively glowing.
What have you been doing?
A relaxing afternoon at the spa.
Ah.
How about you?
Did you manage your post-work nature walk?
Yes, indeed.
We went for a lovely stroll in the woods, didn't we, Paddy?
(WHINES)
Mm-hm.
You sure it wasn't a lovely stroll to the pub?
Paddy's paws look remarkably clean
and the woods are super muddy right now.
Not the way we went.
OK.
I shall give you the benefit of the doubt.
Anyway, I've got some interesting news for you.
Oh?
I called into Causton Library on my way back.
I looked through their microfiche archives
for anything relating to the Hensley estate,
because most of it hasn't been digitised.
And?
Well, I found newspaper articles
reporting the fatal shooting of a man in a hunting accident.
I made copies for you. When was this?
And who's the victim?
Restrictions have been placed on the case,
so the names have been withheld.
But they will be available in the police archives.
Winter, I have a job for you.
Morning, Winter.
Morning.
Any news?
Yes.
Poppy Anwell backed Mr Usher's statement,
but what we found on his laptop suggests
that she would have agreed to anything he said.
It seems that Mr Usher has had his eye on the long game from the start.
How?
Well, he and Ms Anwell had been gathering damaging evidence
from Raven's partying days.
Off her head on drink and drugs,
often with Ms Granville.
And in some pretty compromising situations.
What were they intending to do with it?
Expose her on social media as a charlatan.
Investors would see her as a liability
and she'd be forced from the business.
Leaving Dan Usher and Poppy Anwell
to reboot the Eden brand and run it together.
But why kill Raven when he already had a plan?
Well, their investors were uncomfortable
with the business being solely in Mr Usher's name,
so Raven had advised her lawyers to transfer ownership back to her,
giving him motive to move quickly.
Excellent work, Winter.
You must have been up all night.
Yeah, pretty much. (SIGHS)
So we now know that Mr Usher had motive for both murders.
We just need to prove it.
Where are we with Mr Culpepper's pacemaker?
Time of death will be crucial.
Then you should be very pleased to see me.
The victim died at 6:11.
How accurate is that?
Extremely.
The music started at 6:31
and Mr Usher was seen approaching the stable block by a dog walker
at 6:44.
Which means Dan Usher couldn't have killed Mal Culpepper.
We also got the DNA back from the blood on the painting.
It's a match for a Ewan Boase.
What was he doing on the database?
(LAUGHS) Numerous poaching offences.
Thank you, Fleur.
What would we do without you?
Crash and burn, probably.
I'll leave you to it, gents.
Sir, it's the archive file from the fatal shooting on the estate.
Basil Delaunay was charged with involuntary manslaughter
and received a suspended sentence.
Who was the victim?
Jack Boase, Ewan's father.
Seth Bladon described seeing a violent incident in his vision.
Maybe we underestimated it.
Yeah, quite possibly, sir.
Jack was shot in the Sacred Grove
and today is the anniversary of his death.
I was walking and just trying to make sense of everything,
and I saw your car.
I need to know if Dan's been lying to me.
We've had confirmation that Mr Culpepper died
before Mr Usher arrived at the stable block,
which eliminates him from that enquiry.
Oh, thank God.
It's not that straightforward, I'm afraid.
Our findings indicate that Mr Usher has been planning to defraud you.
He's been digging into your past,
contacting old friends for information, photographs,
anything that could damage your reputation.
In partnership with Poppy Anwell.
That's what Colette was trying to tell me.
Miss Delaunay, we wouldn't advise you to travel home alone.
We can get someone to take you somewhere safe.
No, no, that won't be necessary.
If anyone's leaving, it's not going to be me.
Mum will be down shortly.
Mal's death has hit her pretty hard.
Actually, it's you we need to speak to.
DNA tests have confirmed that it was you
that slashed Basil Delaunay's portrait
and nailed it to a tree in the Sacred Grove.
Why didn't you tell us about the nature of your father's death?
What's that got to do with the murders?
That's what we're trying to work out.
Can you talk us through exactly what happened?
He was...
...shot in cold blood by Basil Delaunay.
He called it a hunting accident, but he was drunk.
How do you know?
It was the annual deer cull at the estate,
and they employed Dad and Mal as stalkers.
Mum was at the pre-shoot drinks.
They all noticed Basil was drinking heavily.
And then?
Dad and Mal followed him into the woods.
He had a real skinful by then, but he wouldn't go home.
He started firing recklessly at moving targets -
a cardinal sin when hunting deer.
When Mal lost sight of Dad, he started to panic,
called his name, but there was no answer.
He was already dead.
Did Mr Culpepper tell the police what he'd seen?
Yeah.
But they all closed ranks, and Basil Delaunay was never breathalysed.
The judge was an old friend
and insisted on reporting restrictions
to keep it all hush-hush.
But everyone in Hensley knew the truth.
And what happened to Basil Delaunay?
He became a reclusive alcoholic and died six years ago,
which brought some comfort to the community,
until Raven Delaunay took over and made things 10 times worse.
When I went to look for Marnie, I saw his painting by the bins
and just lost it and smashed the glass.
And that's how you hurt your hand?
Why nail it to a tree?
To show Dad I hadn't forgotten about him,
that we were still fighting for justice.
Hm.
We'll need to speak to your mother.
I understand today is the anniversary of your father's death.
It's another reason why she's so upset.
I'll, um...
I'll try and persuade her to come down.
Sadness is everywhere in this house. Mum?
You can feel it. Mum?
And some people get more than their fair share of bad luck.
She's gone.
There's no sign.
Does she have her phone?
No, it's in her room and her car's still here.
I'll go check the outbuildings.
Sir, Digital managed to heighten the resolution on that blurred image.
Look at this.
It's Grace Boase.
So she was at the estate the night of Colette's murder,
when she said she was at home.
Why would she lie is she had nothing to hide?
And she still has unfinished business.
So let me get this right.
You needed Marnie to believe that I was in the Dark Sky Cabin
so you could use it as your love shack?
I'm sorry, Raven, I didn't intend to fall in love with Poppy,
but the universe...
Right, and I suppose you never intended
to destroy my reputation either.
Hmm?
Or defraud me of my business.
Which, by the way, I entrusted to you
as a symbol of my complete and utter faith in your integrity.
But now... now I see you for who you really are.
A ruthless, manipulative liar.
And Colette? She was trying to protect me from you.
Raven! Listen to me.
No. I have transferred the business back into my name.
And you?
You will be charged with conspiracy to defraud.
Both of you.
But it was all his idea.
But it's not really my problem, is it?
Hmm?
I suggest you go pack your bags
while I take some much-needed time out.
And when I return, I expect you both to be gone.
And I do hope you'll be very happy together.
(SIRENS WAIL)
(GASPS)
(HEART BEATING)
(GASPING)
(RASPY GASPS)
Ms Delaunay? Ms Delaunay?
(GASPING) (PHONE RINGING)
Call an ambulance.
Any sign of Grace Boase?
No, sir. Oh, it's Fleur.
Talk to her en route.
Well, where are we going? To the Sacred Grove.
(WIND CHIMES TINKLING)
(FOOTSTEPS APPROACH)
It's time to stop now, Grace.
You were caught on camera on the night of the first murder.
And your DNA has been found on the second victim.
You need to give that to me.
I just want to be with Jack.
I know you do.
But what about Ewan?
You've come this far.
You...
You can't abandon him now.
I came here every day to talk to Jack.
About Ewan.
The farm.
No matter how hard it was, it gave me hope.
Until Raven Delaunay prevented you from doing that
by changing the boundary,
and reneged on the land agreement
you believed you had with her grandfather.
I couldn't let the Delaunay family take everything away from Ewan,
just as they had from me.
So you went to find Raven?
When I went up to the house, the place was deserted.
But I found out where Raven was staying that night.
Just wanted to talk to her.
When I saw how luxurious the retreat was,
how much money had been invested,
I was overwhelmed.
The injustice of it all.
I saw her lying in the bath.
Nothing to do but stare up at the stars.
She had everything.
Was gonna leave us with nothing. (CHIMES TINKLING)
I could no longer control the rage that I'd buried for so long.
(GASPING)
(WATER BUBBLING)
But that person wasn't Raven Delaunay, was it?
Why did Mal Culpepper have to die?
I thought I could trust him.
But I couldn't.
What do you mean?
Mal was meeting Ewan at the stable block at 7:30.
He told me to come at 6.
He said it was important.
He said Ewan had disappeared from the grove the night of the murder.
He had no satisfactory explanation.
That he was gonna have to tell the police the truth.
But why would he do that? You were old friends.
Mal thought Ewan had blood on his hands.
I told him he was wrong.
Ewan could never hurt anyone.
But the Forest Guardians are pacifists.
They reject all forms of violence
and Mal couldn't have that on his conscience.
If you don't say something, I will.
When I saw I couldn't change his mind, I had to do something.
Mal!
I could see the panic in his eyes.
Why did you put him on the wheel?
Dan had threatened to do that to Ewan
if the music started again.
It was a way of implicating him.
But how on earth did you manage it?
I had this rush of adrenaline, like I was capable of anything.
I had to protect my son.
Now all I had to do was turn the music on and Dan would come running.
(VOLUME INCREASES)
But you must have been covered in blood.
How did you avoid being seen?
I washed the worst of it off at the stable block
and then walked back through the woods.
Before adding water to the petrol in Ewan's car,
preventing him from meeting Mal as planned.
So where did Ewan think you were all this time?
Mum! In my room.
I often take to my bed around Jack's anniversary.
He didn't question it.
But with Raven Delaunay still alive...
Mum, what are you doing?
...you hadn't got the justice you sought.
You could feel the net was closing in and you had to find her.
Raven Delaunay had everything she could possibly want,
just like her grandfather.
Why did she have to take everything away from us?
But she didn't, Mum.
Her lawyers called just after you left.
The estate, they're gifting us the stable block and the land.
Just like she said.
So she was telling the truth?
I didn't believe her.
And now she's dead.
No, the needle only penetrated her lung.
She's going to live, Grace.
Hey, Mum.
I'll always love you.
No matter what.
I've got a future here now.
Which is all you've ever wanted.
It's all your father ever wanted.
Let's tell him now before it's too late.
There is something magical about this place, Winter.
(CHIMES TINKLING)
You think their ancestors were onto something?
You think they're really talking to Jack?
Well, they believed they were.
Well, that'll give them some comfort, I suppose.
And hopefully a sense of closure.
That's all that matters now.
Well done, Paddy.
Good boy.
And remember, we keep this between ourselves. Eh?
Oh, so much for your wellness plan.
We've been sticking to ours.
You've been caught red-handed, sir.
And as for you, Paddy... (WHINES)
Actually, what I have learned from all the meditation and mindfulness
is that this is my version of wellness.
Never mind your sound-bathing and your freezing cold baths.
What I need at the end of a hard day's work is a cold beer,
a comfy armchair, the company of family and friends,
and the love of my faithful accomplice,
who brings me all the well-being I could possibly need.
But, Paddy, you forgot the pork scratchings.
Good boy.
Oh, good boy, Paddy. (BARKS)
Good boy. Come here. Who's a good boy then, eh? (LAUGHS)
Well done, Paddy.
Time for some pork scratchings?
