Original subtitles

He was just living his life.

CHRIS ROBINSON: 'It's Chris.

'I'm calling

That's Alex Welland.

Daniel Eden's still on the board

Tasha Eden, she was with a man

a pregnant lady.

This is the room

There's nothing here.

INDISTINCT SHOUTING

The whole point of that place

That doesn't offset the fact that

Dan looked after all the money

All I do know is that

No, Chris!

Round the back.

Yeah. Yeah, think so.

Do we know who it is?

Chris Robinson, the caretaker

I saw him hanging through the window

SHE INHALES

What? You were here on a job?

Yeah, I'm here for Pat's sister.

Erm... Robinson got fired

didn't respond very well,

Kelly worried that it would

so I said I'd pop round

CID and CSI are on their way.

Gibbo, get a first account from Jo.

When you've done your statement,

Yeah, thanks.

Do it out here?

Mackie just called. So...

SHE SIGHS

I, erm...

I have to tell you something.

Yeah, not about tonight.

I put the lift man's DNA

I know. I know.

I just...

but... I found a match.

Tasha Eden?

Yeah, who then turned up

When?

She'd tracked me down

her brother died five years ago,

He hadn't died.

He'd faked his own death

who then dies two days

Or... is killed... murdered.

For what? By who? And who knows?

On your own.

OK, technically, in submitting

There's nothing technical

So, it was you with Tasha Eden

Nanta is Tasha's nickname.

That's why that name jumped out

when she saw the responses

And tonight, you find the caretaker

I met him when the body was found

and I saw him again after I'd looked

and a red car that I REMEMBER seeing

I just went back to ask him

but I did then find out that

Chris showed me round the offices

but the one nearest to the lift

and Chris is surprised, you know,

he'll let me know

He left me a message saying

that he'd found something weird,

So I turn up, he doesn't,

but I do get to look

compared to the others,

like, like, scrubbed.

I mean, why that room?

Er... You say he left you a message?

Yeah. Yeah. Erm...

SHE SIGHS

VOICEMAIL: 'You have

'Hello there! It's Chris.

'I'm calling

'Finally gotten it open.

'I think you're gonna enjoy

'It's a proper head scratcher.

'Anyway, come by anytime today,

Whoa, no, Pat, what are you doing?

You can't delete that,

Yeah, against you!

But, Pat... No, that's perverting

Jo, you can't carry out

You didn't even have permission

They'll crucify you.

And you're gonna be a bloody good

Really, just stop,

especially if they find out

Look, just...

Just... think

You really think he'd want you

before it'd even begun? No.

So just...

..leave it alone. Leave it to CID.

What?

SHE SIGHS

I told Mackie

doing Kelly a favour,

Well, you better start being

SHE SCOFFS

I'll have a word.

SHE SIGHS

Didn't seem the type.

Is there a type?

Right. Bed. Come on.

You can tell me

What's she like?

She's still reeling from the fact

and now he is and was murdered,

I dunno. I like her.

SHE SNIFFS

FOOTSTEPS

LEE: Hey.

HE SIGHS

How you feeling?

I don't know.

There's... so much

And you're not helping.

Yeah? Well, I'm also finding out

What?

You know...

when you said

that must mean he knew Daniel?

Tasha, come on, man.

Please, look.

I know you're looking for answers.

But sometimes,

So if I were you...

HE SIGHS

You want me to go?

Then I'm definitely going to stay.

OK.

Suit yourself.

Having a shower in the evening?

I'm off early in the morning.

I mean, why bother?

Who'd vote for your mob these days?

Parliamentary candidate

Hey, you know the best cover-up

apparently, is running.

You jog off, meet up,

and cos you've done 5K,

You should take it up.

The fostering agency need to know

We've had that conversation. No.

We've fostered for 20 years.

I'm thinking about me now...

And jiggy-jogging.

Your obsession with me

If Jack and I are close...

it's because

Ho-ho!

Oh, tell that to this one.

Aw! Come here. Come here.

Aw!

That's amazing.

Ew! Ugh! Gross. Yuck. Put it away.

Good morning, Sophie.

Er, Soph, is your mum up yet?

Yeah, they're out at the house,

I'm in this morning.

I'll pop in and see her.

Mm-hm.

Where are you going?

Morning. If you haven't heard,

the caretaker

was found dead last night.

Apparent suicide.

Yeah. I've spoken to his employer,

who's informed us

for involvement in a parking scam.

Before leaving this to CID, though,

I just want to complete

you're with me this morning.

For the rest of you...

..following receipt

Tasha Eden's

as that of her brother,

And it turns out, we could have a

Daniel and his father

for fraudulent accounting here

The father, a French national,

then did time in Marseille

and Miss Eden herself

has been arrested

she is also a person of interest

Let's, erm... Let's get her in.

Yes? You have a problem with that?

I...

Well, only in so far as...

She wasn't even in the country

That doesn't mean

Well, then, why come forward

Well, perhaps she needs Daniel's

Maybe it's to do with

We know she was at the Nanta offices

could be someone she's working with,

She also told us yesterday

which is bullshit if she's at Nanta.

Shall I go on?

Let's go. Come on, Babak.

You found Robinson, the caretaker?

While "helping your sister"?

Right, right,

Hey. When you don't have a shift,

What you trying to do?

I was just getting my raincoat.

WHISPERS: Aw, Jo. What you doing?

Everyone in this street

cos you didn't get flooded,

but if it rains

you could get done,

Yeah? If it does flood,

will stop the top half of your homes

You just stuff it down the toilet

Courtesy of the Flood Relief Fund!

WOMAN: Didn't know

Brilliant.

So, yeah, just, you know, remember,

Yeah, dry clothes, medicine,

I'm gonna come round

We've got a downstairs

And a stairlift.

It's all right.

Molly? Hiya. I'm gonna shout.

Can I have your attention, please?

Thank you.

On the hour, they're gonna test

But it is just a test!

Right, but at any other time,

follow the flood drill

But the sirens

And if they don't work,

Sergeant Mackie will come round

LAUGHTER

I've heard about these.

Yeah, really good.

If Jack Radcliffe gave us

He hasn't paid?

All the benefits

What a snake.

How's Sarah?

70 miles away, getting interviewed

in a by-election.

Can you be a councillor and an MP?

Could she still live in Waterside?

I'll let you know when I'm told.

FINN: Molly!

Molly! Sorry, excuse me. Molly.

Guess what?

Er, go on. I'll follow you.

So... the council have signed off

What do you mean?

Well, they're saying it's finished.

Hang on, what about all the water

Yeah. Right. What about it?

They don't care, and to prove it,

they're putting in planning

of Uplands Two

Fuck off.

It's all online for anyone to see,

with Jack Radcliffe promising ponds

It's the same Chair of Planning,

so they know

Oh, go away.

Nothing. It's, erm, some uni stuff.

Right. I'm coming! Do you know,

when I'm stuffing this

All right. Off we go.

All right.

Oh, hey, Jo.

Seeing what we can salvage,

Keith, I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry. I didn't realise

It's just where we've measured

you know, can't wash that down

Hm.

Listen, you can stay with us

No need, thanks.

We'll be out of your hair

Oh, well, that's good.

Thanks for everything, though.

Ooh. Sorry, work.

Erm... Kelly?

Kelly?

Listen, I do wanna thank you

Oh. Oh. No, God, I mean,

I just, erm...

I just wanted to say

Oh, God, yeah. Awful.

Jack rang this morning. The police

and he was in a right state

cos, you know,

Course, yeah.

And I liked Chris.

Yeah. I was the one that found him,

You? Oh, God, are you OK?

Yeah, I'm fine.

He hung himself.

Er, the thing is, I, erm...

I told my colleagues

picking up his security pass

For me?

Well, I've been investigating

and there was... there was

but I'm only a trainee, so...

just was wondering,

would you mind backing me up?

Yeah. Yeah, sure. No problem.

I mean, I owe you one.

Several, actually.

OK, thank you. Thanks.

Just wish Jack hadn't been so hard

I mean, if you change the lock,

don't sack the security guy

But then Jack's been stressed

ever since he had

six, seven weeks ago, so...

Sorry, I thought

for renting out parking spaces?

Well, yeah, that as well,

but it was the key

I mean, I thought

He went nuts.

Now feels bad, of course.

Made him generous, though.

Letting us have an Uplands house

How long's that gonna be?

Excuse me.

Excuse me!

This is a construction site,

but you can't just walk in

What's his name?

To me, he's Daniel Eden.

OK.

He and Lee Ellison worked together.

I know you know Lee

at his place yesterday.

Yeah, so I'd like to know

what you can tell me

I have some very important clients

no offence, but your brother

Now, for all I know, that could be

if you wanna talk...

..well... it has to be...

..mutually beneficial.

OK.

Yeah? Right.

Who's William Caine?

Don't know, never heard of him.

William Caine owns this piece

Well, maybe co-owns it with you

so... where is he?

I told you, I don't know him.

OK, this conversation's over. Mal!

Did you kill my brother?

I've seen you lose your temper.

And if you're angry with Lee, maybe

Do you know, I am not having

Hey, did you kill my brother?

But if it's any consolation...

his death is fucking things up

and it's costing me a packet.

Sorry for your loss.

Do you wanna escort her off?

OK, then.

Do you know, I've spoken

and I don't mind calling 'em back.

OK.

So, Jack Radcliffe hasn't had

since Sarah Mackie became

What, have they been shagging

Eh?

What I'm saying is Jack and Sarah

What, breaking the law?

No. No, no, no. They don't have to.

Right, so basically,

on a housing development

you've got to show

water retention basins and ponds.

Erm, to hold the water

Right,

it's up to you

because it's not mandatory,

Well, that can't be right.

Yeah, you mean you do that 60 miles

yeah, you'd be breaking the law,

The government keep saying they're

but THIS evening,

planning applications

So they won't be subject to any sort

They're working the system,

knowing that they are making

more vulnerable to flooding,

that they're gonna ruin

Right. What can we do to fuck it up?

HE EXHALES

Seen another red car?

Why are we meeting here?

Chris Robinson's house,

Yeah, and?

Why was Chris sacked?

Correct, but also because he got

Jack went ballistic, apparently.

His PA said she actually felt scared

Jo, what are you saying?

JO SIGHS

Just wanna see

Yeah... because?

Cos what if Chris

What if he was murdered?

Tasha Eden?

We'd like to invite you

Can I say no?

But that could change.

I mean,

but it's from a house

It's a blurred figure

Chris Robinson's blurred house.

You didn't even see if he

It's from before he died, though.

And we've got why Chris

That's still hearsay at the moment.

OK, he was also sacked

one of which would have been

which maybe belonged to the killer.

Yeah, but no-one else remembers it.

The cleaned room, then,

and the changed lock,

Who's probably done nothing with it.

Yes, well, I've been asking round,

and no local cleaning company's

meaning someone's

Yeah, but, Deepa,

something has to be concrete,

OK.

But if Chris's suicide

we can't sit on this.

There has to be a way

You said Pat was great

Go to Pat.

Tasha, can you confirm that,

you said that you believed

Yes.

And you haven't seen

Do you think I go to seances?

No, I ask because, in that case,

It's a business that was formed

It's only been in existence

Also, Daniel isn't registered

yet you still went

Nanta was Daniel's nickname for me.

I tried my luck online,

And who was the man you were with

You don't know his name?

Well, if it looks like

you'll be right,

that suggests you knew

My father and I

on the 5th of May, 2019,

He'd been in a motorcycle accident

Tasha, Daniel flew to France

To Nimes.

12 miles from your home

There's more.

Your brother in Vergeze,

And then, in Gallargues itself,

at the bottom of the road,

So, Tasha,

would you like to revisit first?

No.

You've got all this,

but what are you doing

Where are you with the one thing

Please. Please, sit down.

Putain de merde.

HORN BLARES

Look where you're going!

Tasha! Tasha?!

Tasha, what's wrong?

Daniel came out to France

What?

He was at the end of my road.

And it's him.

Why would he come and not see me?

This is like going mad,

cos now they're saying I'm involved,

And Lee tells me nothing.

Even when I've seen him

And I fucking hate everyone!

Jo. Jo.

What did she say?

I'm not sure, she's upset,

but if anyone thinks

it's ridiculous.

Jo, as ever, you don't know that.

No, she's here because of me!

And if you're looking at her,

went round to Chris Robinson's house

Look.

It's inconclusive, but...

It's not inconclusive,

You have just ignored

What, because I spoke to Kelly?

No. Coming into the briefing room

You just can't stop, can you?

They're focusing on Tasha,

You've known that woman

I am trying to do the right thing,

Right, well, why don't you try

or just me?

Because I could get busted

but, no, I always come last

No, that's not fair.

You lied to me

Look, I have said sorry about that,

I am sorry, but I'm trying to say

And me not telling you

that wasn't about you.

So, what was it about, then?

Trying to get ahead,

trying to become a detective?

I mean, how maternal can you get?

Do you even want this baby?

Do you know a lot of couples

It's like...

Is that what this is?

Is that what

Do you...

Do you want to be with me?

Oh, God.

No, no, go on,

while I go and try and find

There you go.

Thanks, Mum.

So... what's up, hey,

I'm just...

I'm in too deep.

I'm way out of my depth,

and I probably should,

but I'm onto something

but I can't make everyone see

without losing my job!

If Dad had been in this situation,

You're the one that's like him.

Oh, God, stay where you are.

He always tells Pat where I am.

I feel sorry for him.

For Mackie, why?

Because Sarah's playing away

What?

Yeah.

Big yeah. For years.

Oh, God. I hate that. I hate that.

If you're not happy with someone,

Don't cheat on 'em, just leave.

Yeah.

Oh, actually, Finn's gonna be here

Oh, no, I'm fine, thanks.

So, when Jack Radcliffe

across the river,

the access road for Uplands Two.

Then he sells the site

which is odd, because it's,

But then the new owner,

lets Jack do exactly

build his access road.

Look at what else Jack's doing.

Building drainage outlets.

Yeah.

So, Alex Welland bought land

Yeah, Welland owns it,

but something's going on, isn't it?

Because they're letting Jack

on a piece of land

Can I have a look at them?

Who's William Caine?

There's a planning meeting

with Sarah Mackie chairing.

We're gonna hijack it.

So, Alex Welland and William Caine

I mean, it's weird, isn't it?

But I'm still finding stuff out,

so, apparently,

you have the right

so is that

So, Jack's gonna feed run-off water

from the new Uplands

Yeah, I mean, it'd be legal,

but it would increase

If not for Waterside,

then definitely the next towns

Sorry.

That pin I sent,

with shipping containers outside.

OK, thanks. How are you doing?

'I can't believe

'Daniel was in my street.'

That close, so close.

And I've been thinking about

which I loved, but he'd always

never saying where he was going

And where are you now?

Cos they're looking for you again.

'I have to go.'

Oh, my God. Jo, tell him.

I just think

Do both!

Yeah, so what?

Final exams for what?

I mean, we're in the middle

This is the moment.

Cos if we're not flooding,

This is the fight,

Who cares about getting some degree?

Yeah, do your exams and this.

Why does it have to be

Do both! Go and come back.

Jo, tell him I'm right.

Finn, on this occasion,

Sit them, do it,

Mum, I've got a cab coming,

So, how did the interview go?

Oh, felt good at the time,

How about you?

Well, the investment people came,

no decision

I mean, they say they're committed,

but until they sign,

I mean, they could be in on this,

They could be out to make me fail,

then they pick up the pieces.

They need you.

I was asked about Uplands

"The green model

Not my words, someone on the panel.

Uplands Eco equals Jack Radcliffe.

Hmm.

I, erm...

I also had a call

About Chris Robinson.

They asked me

I said that we were working.

Did they ask where we were?

Yeah, course they did.

What if this gets back to Mackie?

What did you want me to say?

Sarah, what are you gonna say?

Deepa,

Do nothing. It's just so you know

Tell you about it tomorrow.

Oi.

Jo, what you doing here?

So, you know Jack Radcliffe.

You work with Jack Radcliffe,

you're in dispute

That changes things.

By the way, anyone who misses me

will very quickly

So, who killed Daniel

and who then put his body

I don't know.

I don't know, Jo.

I didn't.

Cos it's starting to come across

as if you didn't care about him,

I didn't tell you everything

Really?

You wouldn't understand, Jo.

Try me.

Yeah, so try me.

Or I can call this in

Yeah, all right, fine.

We take each other down.

No, no, no, no.

Nothing but the truth.

OK.

14 months ago, to raise finances,

Jack sold me and Daniel

on the understanding that whatever

when that came through,

he would pay us back double

So, we bit his hand off.

Now, this site

so he couldn't do without it,

But then seven weeks ago,

he's broke,

he can't get any more credit

because then they'll pull out,

He'd go bust, we'd lose the money,

and then we'd be left

of fucking land, so...

Jack had a load of plant

Yeah.

Yeah.

He asked us to steal the gear,

which...

because me and Daniel,

But Jack begged us.

So that stuff out there,

Yeah.

See, he gets the insurance

when we sell it abroad.

It should have been long gone,

but Daniel,

You see, back in the day, I stole,

That's how we met.

He worked on the docks.

I worked on a fucking farm.

So, there it sits,

with Jack getting

Except today, I finally get a slot

Which I have to take, Jo.

Because Dan...

Dan cleaned me out.

You know,

Yeah, you told me that.

Well, have some more detail.

Our friendly banker...

Do you ever deal

You think I'm fucking mad?

OK, so how does William Caine

You know William Caine?

I don't, no. How do you know him?

I don't, no-one does.

His name just started bubbling up

And now suddenly,

for the brownfield site.

So, obviously,

You think he has your money?

Probably.

But, look, Jo, I just...

I'm fucking done, all right?

I am done, so, please,

and the baby's sake,

just, please,

Moving on to item five,

for the proposed

The application is made

in relation

and the proposed expansion.

Yeah, never mind Uplands Two.

Can I just ask the council

for Jack Radcliffe's first

haven't been built?

No interventions, thank you.

Because they WERE a requirement,

but you signed off on the project

I'm sorry,

not a public meeting.

When it's clear

from the Uplands contributed

this town has seen to date!

You will be removed

Why is Jack Radcliffe

a second Uplands Eco

Would it have anything

and the chair

By which I mean

in the Uplands show home

Jesus Christ.

A relationship with no benefits

Sorry, we're authorised

Eric, I got picked ahead of you

They're screwing each other

and who knows what else

For example,

what's going on with Alex Welland

on the riverside site,

Come on, own up! You liars!

Honest to God, Eric,

ERIC: Come on!

Liars. Liars, all of you!

Come on, Jo.

Look, I need to get

What do you want?

How can we help each other?

I want to find Daniel's killer.

And the one person who keeps pushing

is Jack Radcliffe.

Jack was working

Jack owns the building

and yesterday, he sacks

who went home

hanged himself,

except I know that caretaker

OK.

In what way?

He accessed a locked room that Jack

Plus, you're telling me

that could see him going under

Look, all I know for sure...

..is he needs the money

Hmm...

Enough to kill?
