Okay? That's all I need, please.

Ben is worried sick. We all are.

- I'll be back in a few days, I promise.

Just tell Ben I'm okay.

You both can stop worrying.

- [Sarah] I can be there in six hours.

Just don't do anything stupid.

- We both know why I'm here.

- [Sarah] I know, but you have family and friends down here.

Ben set up another appointment for you.

Can't you at least consider it?

We'll be with you by midday tomorrow.

Ava, is everything okay?

- Someone's following me. - What do you mean,

someone is following you?

Ava, listen to me. You're fine.

It's a popular place. You're bound to run into other hikers.

Did you remember to take your medication?

- Are we really gonna do this now?

- You know I had to ask. - Look, if I find a way

to double back, can you get me tonight?

- [Ben] We'd never find you in the dark.

We'll set off first thing in the morning.

You went out prepared, right? - Yeah, of course I did.

- [Ben] Then you'll be fine.

You've done this a hundred times before.

Just pitch up for the night, relax,

have something to eat, get a good night's sleep.

Be with you by midday. - Yeah.

Yeah, you're, you're right. (inhales and exhales)

but what is lies within that tent.

- Fuck you. - Come now, Ava.

Aren't you the least bit curious?

- What did you do with him? What did you do with my son?

- Make it to the tent and find out. But be careful.

I'm not going to make this easy for you.

- [Stalker] How are you feeling, Ava?

It seems I didn't miss completely.

(Ava breathing uneasily)

(Ava gasping) Isn't it amazing

what a little adrenaline can do?

(Ava breathing heavily)

It keeps you sharp, keeps you running.

But now it's fading.

I wonder how long would it have taken

for you to notice? (Ava moaning)

Let's play a game, shall we?

The loch, one mile back, there's a medical kit.

A few supplies.

But do hurry, Ava. I'd hate for you to bleed out.

I was starting to think you never made it.

- What now?

- [Stalker] Now you give me something in return.

- I don't understand. I don't have anything to give.

(static buzzing) - Let me ask you,

what would you be willing to do to see your son again?

- I'd do anything. I just want him back.

- Oh, good. I was hoping you would say that.

Let's put it to the test, shall we?

- What do you want me to do? - Turn around.

I can't see your face.

I said, turn around.

(tense orchestral music)

(Ava breathing uneasily)

Oh, there's that beautiful face. I've missed it.

Ava. Ava.

(Ava whimpering) (Stalker laughing)

(trees creaking)

Let me see your handy work.

(birds chirping)

(tense orchestral music continues)

Oh, impressive. (Ava whimpering)

I didn't think you had it in you.

- Don't you have the balls to show yourself?

(static buzzing) - As you wish.

(trees creaking) Ava.

Is he still alive?

(inhales) Please. I just want him back.

(Ava groaning)

- We're here.

- (breathes uneasily) I don't understand.

(Ava breathing heavily)

(glove creaking)

(Sarah whimpering) - You did this.

(Ava gasping) You brought them right to me.

(Ava groaning)

They came to save you,

and look what you've done.

(Sarah whimpering)

(Ben breathing heavily)

- Please. - It's time for you to choose.

(Ava breathing heavily)

(crow cawing)

(Sarah moaning)

Let's put a mother's love to the test, shall we?

(Ben whimpering) (Ava gasping)

(Sarah gasping)

(axe clinking) (Ava whimpering)

(suspenseful orchestral music)

A life for a life.

(Ava and Sarah whimpering)

Your choice.

- (breathes uneasily) I won't do it.

- [Stalker] Oh, come now, Ava.

You already have. You just don't know it.

- Fuck you.

- Motherhood. Such a sacred bond.

You'd do anything, wouldn't you?

Anything to protect him.

Anything to get him back.

The truth is, when push comes to shove,

a parent is capable of unimaginable things.

You'll betray, you'll kill,

(Ben whimpering) you'll become the monster,

and that is where the true test begins.

(Sarah whimpering) (Ava breathing uneasily)

So here we are, your best friend

and your estranged husband.

Your choice, one life for another.

Who are you willing to lose

to save the one that matters most?

- How do I know he's even still alive?

- You don't. That's the beauty of it.

I could tell you anything right now,

but what really matters is whether you're willing to gamble.

- Please. Please just let me see him.

- [Stalker] Oh, Ava, haven't you learned yet?

This isn't about what you want.

This is about what you're willing to give.

What matters is your choice right here, right now.

(Ava, Sarah and Ben whimpering)

Let me help. Let me make this easier for you.

Maybe a trip down memory lane will ease your torment.

Let the past guide you.

(Ben and Sarah breathing heavily)

Life has a funny way of showing you the truth.

You've been running from it for the last year,

pretending, denying.

The truth always finds a way to the surface.

Your dear best friend, Sarah.

Always so devoted, so eager

to console you in your darkest hour.

But tell me, haven't you always felt it,

that quiet, nagging doubt?

(Sarah whimpering) What is she hiding?

Deep down, you've always had your suspicions, haven't you?

And poor Ben.

The late nights. The hushed calls.

The way he turned cold when you asked him

too many questions. (Ava breathing uneasily)

You felt it, didn't you?

(Ben breathing heavily)

Your marriage was crumbling, Ava. And you know what's worse?

Sarah wasn't just a distraction.

She was the excuse he needed,

the perfect excuse to let it all fall apart.

(Sarah groaning) (Ben whimpering)

So, Ava, what will it be?

A family built on lies and deceit

or the faint hope of finding your boy?

Make the choice.

(Sarah and Ben whimpering)

(Ava breathing uneasily)

Very well.

(Sarah gasping) (gun blasting)

(Sarah groaning) (Ava gasping)

(tense orchestral music)

(Ava sobbing)

Did you see how easy that was?

She always wanted him, desired him,

and she was willing to betray you or him.

Wasn't it what you were arguing about that fateful day?

Your husband betrayed you, Ava.

He deserves to die.

- Please. I can't do it.

- Tick tock, Ava.

(Ava moaning)

Think about what they did together,

(Ben and Ava moaning) what he did to her,

your best friend.

Good girl.

(Ava breathing heavily)

(suspenseful orchestral music)

(Ava breathing uneasily)

(Ben whimpering)

Kill the past.

(Ava whimpering)

(axe clinking)

(Ben groaning) Good.

(Ben gasping) (flesh squelching)

(blood spurting) (Ben choking)

He dies so beautifully.

(Ava whimpering)

It feels good, doesn't it?

(Ava breathing heavily)

Deep down, you always blamed him for your son.

I'm just glad I could give you

one last precious moment together.

- Did what you wanted. Now give me my son back.

- [Stalker] Give him back to you?

- That was the deal, wasn't it?

- [Stalker] Oh, Ava, how innocent you are.

How deliciously gullible. Look at what you've become.

No, I think it's best he stays with me.

He'll be safer, far away from you.

- No, that's not the deal. (gasps) That's not fair. (sobs)

- [Stalker] Take solace, Ava.

You were right all along about your husband,

about your friend, but like all good games,

this one has to end.

- (gasps) What?

- [Stalker] You should never have come back.

You just had to stay away.

(intense orchestral music)

(trigger clicking) (Ava gasping)

(gun clattering) (Stalker grunting)

(Ava whimpering) Dear God. (grunts)

(gun clattering) Ah. Oh, God.

Your husband and girlfriend,

they were an unexpected surprise.

But death, Ava, death is always happy to make room.

It's time to stop running. (Ava whimpering)

Give me the hatchet,

and I'll let you choose how this ends.

(Ava breathing heavily)

The knife or the gun?

- (gasps) Is he still alive? (Stalker laughing)

- Still clinging to hope. It's almost sweet.

(laughs) But let's be honest,

you've always been a knife kind of girl.

- Tell me! Is he still alive? (breathes heavily)

(mask creaking)

- Yes, Ava.

(Ava breathing heavily)

He's still alive.

(both grunting)

(hand patting)

(rock whacking) (Stalker groaning)

(Ava whimpering)

(knife clinking)

You think you can save that dear little boy?

You're already dead, you fucking bitch!

(Ava whimpering) (Stalker laughing)

Come here. I'm going to put you out of your misery.

(Stalker laughing) (Ava gasping)

(bushes rustling)

Ava!

(Ava breathing heavily)

Ava!

(soft dramatic music)

(Ava breathing heavily)

(bell ringing) (barbed wire rattling)

(tense orchestral music)

(Ava breathing uneasily)

(footsteps pattering) (Ava breathing heavily)

(barbed wire rattling)

(knife clinking) Ah.

(gun scraping)

Ava, come out, come out wherever you are.

(Ava breathing uneasily)

Think about him, Ava, curled up in the dark,

terrified, calling your name.

You could end it. You could save him.

All you have to do is show yourself.

(Ava breathing heavily)

No more running.

You're tired. I know you are.

Oh, just let it end.

(bells ringing)

Ah, there you are.

(bell ringing)

(Ava breathing uneasily)

(barbed wire rattling) (bells ringing)

(gun blasting)

(barbed wire rattling) (bells ringing)

(gun blasting)

(Ava whimpering)

(bells ringing) (Ava panting)

(gun blasting) (bullets ricocheting)

(footsteps pattering)

(Ava panting) (gun blasting)

(footsteps pattering) (Stalker panting)

(Stalker groaning) (bell ringing)

(gun blasting) (trigger clicking)

Oh. (breathes heavily)

Oh. (groans) (barbed wire rattling)

(bells ringing) Oh, no, no.

(Stalker groaning)

Oh, no. (groans)

(bell ringing)

Oh, no. No, no.

(Stalker breathing heavily)

There you are. Ava, wait, wait!

No. Listen to me.

Listen, Ava. (bells ringing)

Ava. (groans) (flesh squelching)

Oh!

Ava, this is our destiny.

Us, you and I.

This is what was meant to be. No.

Ava, listen. (bell ringing)

Listen to me. Listen.

Ah, wait, I know... (branch whacking)

(Stalker groaning)

(Stalker laughing) (Ava panting)

(birds chirping)

(soft dramatic music)

Clever girl.

(exhales) What now, Ava?

If you kill me, you'll never see your son again.

- Take the mask off.

(Stalker breathing uneasily)

I said, take the fucking mask off!

(mask scraping)

Who are you?

- Not what you were expecting. - Where is he?

- I can take you to him. - Why?

Why take him? Why try to kill me?

- My daughter, she's younger than you.

Brilliant. Beautiful.

She had everything except the one thing she wanted most.

The one thing that I couldn't give her.

And so I found another way with you.

You just couldn't let it go, could you?

You had to keep digging, coming back.

(Ava breathing uneasily)

- So you did all this because she couldn't have a child?

- You make it sound like madness,

but you, of all people, should understand.

You do anything for your child.

So tell me, why do you find it so hard

to believe that I do the same for mine?

- (inhales) Because he wasn't yours to take!

(Ava breathing angrily)

- Nevertheless, you won't kill me.

You can't. Not if you want to see him again.

(crow cawing)

I'll take you to him.

My daughter, she'd just love to meet you.

(Ava gasping) (branch whacking)

Ah! Ah! (Ava grunting)

(Stalker groaning)

- Uh! - Ah!

(Ava breathing heavily) (Stalker groaning)

- Tell me. Where is he?

- He's safe with my daughter back at my house.

- (breathes angrily) Where?

- Oh, you dumb bitch. (chuckles)

You passed it on your way out here. (laughs)

(Ava whimpering)

(soft dramatic music)

(Ava whimpering)

Oh. (laughs)

Oh.

We've been watching you for over a year.

Every visit, every desperate little trip

back to this place.

Oh, you came so close, Ava.

Over and over, circling the truth,

too blind to see it.

All that pain. All that grief.

And he was right there, just beyond the trees.

(Ava breathing uneasily)

(Stalker laughing)

Oh. Oh.

You should be thanking us.

We're giving Shaun the life which you never could.

(Stalker laughing)

(Stalker gasps and groans) (branch whacking)

(Ava grunting)

(Ava breathing heavily)

(Stalker coughing)

(Stalker gasping)

(Ava breathing angrily)

(crows cawing) (Ruth exhaling)

(tense orchestral music)

(footsteps pattering)

(crows cawing)

(soft dramatic music)

(crows cawing continues)

(dishes rattling)

- Well, this is awkward.

I take it my father won't be joining us.

(mask tapping)

No. He did always like his theatrics.

- Give him to me.

- I think we both know that isn't going to happen.

(crows cawing)

(Ava swallowing)

(crows cawing)

(glass tapping)

- You know, he begged for his life before I killed him.

It was pathetic.

- More wine?

(wine sloshes and trickles)

(soft dramatic music continues)

(bottle tapping)

I told him not to underestimate you, Ava.

(crows cawing)

Men never quite grasped the depth of a mother's love.

But he couldn't help himself.

He had to turn it into one of his twisted games.

It's fitting that it should end this way.

Two loving mothers willing to do the unspeakable

to protect their child.

(tense electronic music)

- I'm going to kill you.

(crows cawing)

(wine sloshing)

(Ruth chuckling)

- You know, I met your friend, your husband too.

They're such a sweet couple. I adore seeing people in love.

Tell me, how are they enjoying this day?

(Ruth slurping)

(glass tapping) (crows cawing)

(hand rubbing)

(knife clinking)

Let's send this charade, shall we?

I find small talk rather boring.

(crows cawing)

(knives scraping) (both grunting)

(knife clinking)

(head smashing)

(Ruth groaning) (Ava grunting)

(footsteps tapping) (fruit squishing)

(both grunting)

(hands whacking)

Ah!

(Ava groaning)

(both grunting)

(head bashing) (Ruth chokes and groans)

(Ava grunting)

(hands whacking)

(both groaning)

(suspenseful electronic music)

(both breathing heavily)

(kick thudding) (Ava groaning)

(Ava coughing)

(both breathing heavily)

(crows cawing)

I want you to know something, Ava.

Once I kill you, your name disappears.

It'll be like you never existed.

(Ava grunting)

Gone. Erased.

(Ava groaning)

There'll be no trace of you.

Not in his mind. (Ava groaning)

Not in anyone's. (hand slapping)

(breathes heavily) And his name won't be Shaun anymore.

Shaun is a little boy who lost his mommy.

But Robert, he's mine.

(crows cawing) (Ava breathing angrily)

And I'm going to love him more than you ever could.

(Ava groaning)

(Ava groaning) Every single day!

(Ava gasping)

(Ruth breathing heavily)

(Ava groaning)

(sniffs) Hmm. (inhales and exhales)

(Ava groaning)

(tense orchestral music)

(glass tapping) (crows cawing)

(wine sloshing) (Ruth inhales and exhales)

So what do you think, Ava? How do you like his new name?

- His name is Shaun! (grunts)

(bottle tapping)

(hand slapping) (intense orchestral music)

(Ruth breathes heavily) (fist whacking)

(Ruth groaning) (Ava breathes heavily)

(Ruth grunting)

(silverware clinking)

(both grunting)

(Ruth coughing)

(both grunting)

(knife clinking)

(towel rustling)

(bench creaking) (Ruth choking)

(Ava grunting)

(neck snapping)

(body thudding)

(Ava breathing heavily)

(soft dramatic music)

(Ava panting)

(Ava breathing heavily)

Shaun?

(clock ticking)

(Ava breathing uneasily)

(clock chiming) (Ava gasping)

Shaun? (breathes heavily)

Shaun?

Shaun?

- [Shaun] Mommy.

(Ava whimpering)

(soft dramatic music continues)

Mommy.

(Ava whimpering)

(door clicks and creaks)

(Ava gasping)

- Shaun.

(soft dramatic music)

(soft dramatic music continues)

(soft dramatic music continues)

(soft dramatic music continues)

(soft dramatic music continues)
