(water splashing) (thunder roaring)

(somber music)

(leaves crunching)

(somber music continues)

- The site lies between a medieval boundary line

and an old pool.

There's a distinct ring of metal stakes,

all made out the same material: iron.

Based on the levels of oxidization,

some of these are easily 300 or 400 years old.

But then there are some younger ones,

19th century, maybe?

Based on the levels of rust.

Easily a hundred years old.

But it's interesting, some of these are way more modern.

I mean, these are barely 40 or 50 years old,

so people seem to have been using the site

for the same reason over numerous time periods.

Its location next to the pool means,

maybe it was used for ceremonial things?

It could have been used since Saxon times,

based on its geographical location.

I'm thinking that maybe it's worth pulling one

of the older states and sending it off to be dated.

(door continues knocking)

- Surprise!

- Alex, what are you doing here?

- Don't be like that. You know you're happy to see me.

- Alex... - Fine, fine.

You've got your research dig today, right?

I thought you could use hand?

- Well, you thought wrong.

I'm perfectly capable of my own.

- Jess, look, I thought maybe we can talk,

how it ended, the way I treated you?

- No. - Jess...

- No, Alex.

- Well, let me at least give you a hand.

You don't wanna do this on your own.

- I'm not.

There, happy? - Who are you going with?

- It's none of your business.

Somebody's helping, okay? I've got it covered.

- What about equipment?

Your struggle about Tyler's gear?

- Tyler? - Are we going or what?

- Tyler, Maya, what are you doing here?

- Alex told us about what you found,

something interesting?

You didn't think that you could do this without us, did you?

- Yeah, let's go root around in the soil.

- Okay, just give me ten minutes.

(somber music)

- You need me to carry that, Jess?

Jess?

- Sorry. Miles away.

- You need me to carry that, the bag?

- I think you have enough. - I can manage, honestly.

- Alex...

- Fine, fine. I can take a hint.

You okay? You look... - Like shit?

- You can never look like shit, Jess.

You always look- - Don't do that.

- Oh, we're not together anymore,

so I can't say anything nice.

- No, you can't.

And you shouldn't be here, Alex.

None of you should.

- Jesus, we packed this. Big foot.

(Tyler groaning)

Oh, aw fuck.

You know when I envisaged becoming an archeologist?

You know what I really thought it would be like?

- Please don't say Indiana Jones.

- Indiana Jones.

Beautiful women, traveling the world.

Punching the occasional Nazi.

Nah, here I am camping in the woods

and I haven't even left the UK once.

Thanks for getting my hopes up, Mr. Jones.

- Honestly, guys, I've got this covered, so...

If you wanna go home, that's fine.

- What? But this is our first dig since uni!

It's exciting!

Uh, shall we get a move on then?

- Not just yet. We're still waiting for Harlan.

- Who?

- He was supposed to be helping me today.

He's basically like a local history buff.

He knows more about the site than anyone.

More about these woods than anyone.

More about...

I met him online.

- Tinder?

- It was an archeology page, actually.

- Omegle?

- I've been researching the site since I first came here.

I wanna know more about the history.

- Yeah, but I mean,

do we really need him for the dig though?

All jokes aside, my kit is very expensive.

I don't want some random ass-

- Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.

Harlan?

The hermit guy who wrote the mad conspiracy theories?

I heard that he killed his own sister

from some crazy monster theory.

Anyway, this site we're going to,

is it part of the Roman mining site you mentioned?

The one on the other side of the woods?

- Not the Romans again, Alex.

- It's older. Much older.

But a lot of the records for this area were burned.

- Burned? How?

- Fire, Maya. Fire usually does the burning.

- Thank you, Tyler.

As always, your contributions are so enlightening.

- There were a lot of murders in this area back in the day.

Missing people.

The locals thought that the woods were haunted

or that their relatives had been possessed.

Basically it led to a lot of witch hunts and lynch mobs.

- Yeah, I bet all the women death belonged that.

- Tragic.

- According to my research,

the locals thought there was something living in the forest.

A monster.

A beast.

A ghost.

Whatever, urban legends. Then one day it all just stopped.

- Cool! Cursed, undocumented ground.

Perfect way to spend a few days.

- Well, Harlan knows more about the legends than anyone.

So we're lucky he's agreed to come.

- Yeah, we're lucky.

- Scared of your competition, pal?

- Oh, from the ghost hunter? Yeah, I'm petrified.

I heard that he lives in the basement,

gets all his food delivered to him so he never has to leave.

Spends all day posting

on these nonsense conspiracy forums in the dark web.

- Okay, some of those things are true though.

- Really? - Yeah.

- Chemtrails? - Yeah, they're everywhere.

- [Alex] And yet they're not.

- Hey, Jess you okay?

- I'm fine.

He's here.

Harlan, you are here.

- Hi Harlan, nice to meet you.

Appreciate you being there

- Well done. He hates you already.

- Where have you been? - Waiting for you.

- Come on guys.

We follow the track for about 15 minutes

and then it's off road from there.

(somber music)

- Yeah, don't worry about me. I'll be fine.

Yeah, I'll be fine. You guys go ahead.

There's basically nothing in these.

No, it's all good. No, I can carry these.

They're light as hell.

(somber music)

- Jesus, ugh! - What's up?

- It's my phone.

I've been tracking us on maps, but it just keeps glitching?

Ever since we left the road.

- Battery? - It's full.

- It's maybe the trees interfering with the signal.

- Don't worry about it.

I was in your way, I should have moved.

Dick...

(suspenseful music)

- What the fuck are they doing here?!

- I'm sorry. I just-

- Look, it was meant to be just you.

I wouldn't have come if I'd known.

- They weren't meant to be here.

Okay? They just showed up.

- Well get rid of them! - I can't.

Let's just, let's just go along with it, okay?

We'll let them take some samples

and then make up an excuse in the morning.

- It's not them that I'm worried about, Jess.

- We'll be careful. I'll be careful.

- I'm not taking any responsibility for their safety.

- Why are we stopping again?

Oh. You all right?

Jealousy is unbecoming, son.

I suppose it is a lover's quarrel.

Alex, how does it feel to be the fifth wheel?

(water splashing) (somber music)

- This is it?

- Well, it's not exactly

the find of the century I was promised.

It's just a couple of bits of metal.

- No, no, no, no.

This is interesting.

I mean, look, this is clearly post-medieval.

300, 400 years old?

And over there, 1900s.

- Yeah, but this is like 10-15 years old, tops.

The oldest thing here is this medieval boundary line.

- It's a warding ring, right, Harlan?

- You should put a bell on that fella's neck.

Harlan's a dog's name, anyway.

- It doesn't matter. It's a warding ring.

- Is it to keep things out or keep things in?

- Well, pagan tribes use rings like these

to trap unwanted demons and spirits.

They believes that the iron could hold

what the soil couldn't.

- Like a prison.

- Do you think it might be religious in some way?

I mean, people have clearly been using this

over different time periods.

- I think for once, Tyler might actually be right.

- Hmm.

- Well I for one, don't feel comfortable

with us disturbing all of this history just yet.

So maybe we should just take some photographs

and drop a preliminary paper, yes?

(noise screeching)

(metal tapping) Jess?

- [Alex] Jess?

- What?

- I was only gonna ask

if you wanted one of these pulled.

- No, no. I think we can just photograph them.

- What?

- Do we need samples of everything?

What do you on about, Jess?

- Yeah, um...

Yeah, okay. Just one though.

- Ah, well. Fine.

(intense music)

(dirt shuffling)

(suspenseful music)

- You wanna take a photo of something else long and stiff?

- Well it's not working, thank God.

(animal howling)

- Did you hear that?

- It's just the wind. It's probably a storm coming.

- Ah, "Viene la Tormenta."

It's Terminator.

- Never seen it. - No? Anyone?

It's Term... Wow.

(animal howling)

- It's getting stronger.

Guys, I think maybe we should stop working

and set up camp,

before the darkness creeps up on us?

(tents shuffling)

- Is it these that we pin down?

- It's gonna be awfully snug, isn't it?

Hey look, Maya. Pitching tent.

- [Jess] I haven't done this since last summer.

- [Maya] Yeah, me neither.

- [Jess] Brought the easiest one to build.

- Wait...

Mine is like a terrible botch job, so-

Oh, there's a spider already!

Oh, there's a spider. There's a spider.

Alex, can you just...

It's just right there.

(object distantly creaking)

- God, I hate camping.

Next time we do one of these, I'll stay at home.

You can just ping me the date

so I can sort it out from the comfort of my own bed.

- [Maya] Oh, I'm sorry,

but you've chose the wrong profession.

- No, I just hate camping.

- Well, what about last summer when we went to Glasgow?

- Yeah, well...

It was Glasgow, you know?

Plus, in the woods no one can hear you scream or moan.

- Isn't that space?

- I know.

(footsteps crunching) (intense music)

- Everything okay?

- What?

- You, is everything okay? You seem distracted.

I know, I know.

I'm not supposed to care anymore since you've dumped me,

but I just can't help it.

Jess, can we just talk for a bit?

- Can we just figure this out once we're done here?

Okay, you said you wanted to help, right? So help.

- What did you do?

- Harlem? It's been like an hour, where have you been?

If it was anyone else, I'd be worried they got lost.

- You've pulled another one, haven't you?

- We needed a sample, Harlan.

That's just why we're here.

- But we're not all supposed to be here are we? Hey?

And as for you, I told you not to fuck around.

I told you not to touch anything else.

You can't just go around sampling this kind of seal.

Not until we understand what damage it could do!

You don't just go around digging stuff up

that you've got absolutely no idea about, any of you!

- [Alex] What do you think archeologists do, mate?

- Yeah, that's literally our whole thing.

- [Jess] I'm sorry.

- Look, we have to tread carefully here, Jess.

Just wait. All right?

Wait, all of you.

Wait until I've got some more information,

until we know exactly what it is

that we're dealing with here.

You don't know what damage

taking another one of those things could do!

- Okay, deliverance, right? Let's just calm down, okay?

- Do you have any idea what this is?

Eh? Do you?!

- A very small stonehenge?

(Harlan scoffing)

- Look, we don't know what messing around

with more of these things might do, Jess.

If you've gonna made this situation worse-

- [Alex] She didn't take it out. I did.

- Look, you are all messing around

with things you have absolutely no idea about.

You're just... (footsteps crunching)

- Charming.

- Harlan! - You asked me for help, Jess.

You reached out to me.

- I know.

- Oh, let me help you then.

Just listen to me, all right? Listen.

- You think we're running out of time?

- The iron nails?

- They're working.

They seem to stop it, kind of.

But it's getting harder to control.

- Bringing them here though, Jess?

They could get hurt.

- But so could so many other people if we don't stop this.

- I'm close, Jess.

I'm really, really close,

but I just need a little bit more time.

- I think we're all out of that.

- Okay, well just don't let 'em touch anything else, yeah?

Just not until me and you know what's going on.

- But they think we're on an archeological dig, Harlan.

I can't stop them from doing their jobs.

- That's why they should have stayed at home, Jess.

- I didn't ask them to come.

- Just don't let them touch anymore

of the iron stakes okay?

Just at least for tonight until I've got something more.

(animal howling)

It's stirring, Jess. - I know.

I can feel it in my veins.

Harlan?

Thank you.

- I'm not just doing this for you, Jess.

- Hoping as well. It's a fucking problem.

Hey, cool.

You love meeting the locals, even the crazy ones!

Next time we do this,

let's invite a serial killer to spice things up, eh?

- Why did you invite this guy,

and why was he surprised

we took a sample from the site?

What did he thing you two planned on doing here?

- Give you three guesses, bud.

- Did you think you were planning a romantic camping trip?

- Look, do you want us to go?

- Yeah, I think that would be best.

- I'm not leaving you with that freak.

- He's not a freak.

- I think she wants to be with a freak, bud.

- Alex, look, I'm really glad you came,

but I think I need to do this on my own.

- Ouch.

- Shut... - Tyler.

- Look, maybe we should leave the lovebirds to it, eh?

Can we at least have the rest

of the afternoon to finish logging stuff?

Otherwise, coming here was a complete waste of time.

- It'll be dark soon.

I assume you can stomach at us for one more night, Jess?

- Sure.

(somber music)

- Top layer, we have modern subsoil.

Below that, we have medieval land surface.

- No, post-medieval. It's basic stratigraphy.

- So you did pay attention in class?

- Yeah, obviously. I love this stuff.

(intense music)

(Harlan panting) - Okay, okay.

There must be something. There must be.

(papers shuffling)

(Harlan speaking faintly)

(whispers) The great wolf...

(somber music)

(animal howling)

(branches cracking)

(sleepers snoring)

- Jess, I really didn't mean

to just turn up and surprise you.

Alex told us that you wanted us here.

- That's okay. I know it wasn't you and Tyler.

This has got Alex's name written all over it.

- So, this Harlan guy, what's going on there?

- Okay, it's not like that.

No, he's just, he's genuinely trying to help me.

- It's a bit intense, though.

- Yeah, well, it's nice to have someone

who wants to help me, not just to get into my pants.

- Yeah, we both know that I have terrible taste in them.

Right, well, I am going to sleep because I'm knackered.

- Okay, me too.

- Night. - Night.

(night birds chirping)

(branches cracking) (intense music)

(Jess panting)

- Jess?

Jess.

Jess!

Are you okay?

- Yeah, my mind was racing.

I couldn't sleep.

I just needed a minute.

- Are you sure you're okay?

- I'm fine. I'll be back in, in a second.

- All right.

See you back at the tent.

(leaves crunching)

(intense music)

(Jess screaming and panting)

(bones and skin ripping)

(Jess gasping and screaming)

- Jess?

Jess, is that you?

(Jess moaning) (bones cracking)

(Jess screaming) (animal growling)

(Jess panting and whimpering)

(bone cracking) (Jess screaming)

(bone cracking) (Jess yelping)

(Jess panting and whimpering)

(suspenseful music)

- Alex. - Fuckin' hell, Jess.

Gimme a heart attack, yeah?

- What are you doing out here?

- [Alex] There was a scream.

- I didn't hear anything.

- [Alex] What are you doing out here?

- I needed to pee

- All the way out here?

- Well, I didn't want either

of you two perverts following me, did I?

It's not like it worked though, is it?

I'm going back to the tent.

- Wait, why are you acting like this?

What's going on?

Ever since we've got here,

you've just treated me like shit for no reason.

I get we have a history, but can we just be civil?

- I'm sorry. You're right, okay?

- (whispers) Through the earth.

Through the earth. Binds the spirit, haunts it and traps it.

Okay, but what do we do once it's out?

All right, come on, there must be something.

I know there must be something.

(Harlan sighs)

In the rights of the undead, the cursed flesh may burn.

Recoiled from the touch of raw iron.

Yeah, no kidding.

Okay, look, iron. Let's start with iron.

Iron binds it, but binding it isn't getting it out.

Binding it... Binding it just traps it.

No. No, binding it locks it.

Binding it locks it in.

But she doesn't need that. She doesn't need chains.

She needs to get rid of it.

(object tapping)

Any ideas?

I know, yeah.

I couldn't save you.

Sorry.

- I can save her.

I can save her, come on.

Come on, Harlan.

This is literally what you do.

Research, research. Come on.

Flesh entwined with earth. Blood with soil.

Okay, okay.

Deliverance is possible.

The curse may be cast off with the transference of blood.

The transfer, the transfer, the transference of blood,

the transfer.

The afflicted must shed blood.

The curse leaps. No, no.

No...

(gasps) The burden passed will be unbound.

A new host must be slain.

Curse can be shackled,

unable to root again.

Jesus Christ...

(somber music)

(Tyler groaning)

- I take back what I said yesterday.

That might have been the best night's sleep

I've ever had.

- I beg to differ.

- Well, can we please swap tents, then?

Because I slept like shit.

- Well, of course. Just swap with Alex.

You can come cuddle with me.

- Oh, you know what? I'd rather toss and turn all night.

- And so would I.

- Where's she been?

- Sex.

- What? I don't... - What's going on?

- Nothing, we're just...

We are just gonna have some breakfast

and then pack up.

- You look nice.

- Water? - That'd be great.

(animal howling)

- [Maya] Jess...

You okay? - I'm fine.

- Is everything okay? - [Maya] That is going...

- I don't know.

- What? - Harlan?

- No, Alex. - Harlan's here.

- No, he's not, Jess. Lo-

- You don't think, you don't think

there's something going on between those two, do you?

- Oh, you can't be serious.

- Well, if there is,

it'd be a serious improvement on her last boyfriend.

- Oh, you prick. - Leave him alone.

- So you're serious about swapping tents?

'Cause I could always come into yours.

- I don't want you coming anywhere near me.

- There's so much room!

Jess would (indistinct) here.

- Um...

- Well if you need me, I'll be in the bar.

The iron bar.

- (scoffs) Very good.

- Well, they survived the night then, did they?

- Where did you go?

- I was close by.

I mean, not close enough to be anywhere near

when it happens.

Look, Jess, I heard you in the woods last night.

I don't think you've got long left.

In fact, I don't even think you are gonna make

another nightfall.

Not even with the iron.

- Have you got anything? Anything at all?

- You've put them in danger, your friends.

You know that, right?

- It's fine. They're leaving this morning.

What? I thought that'd be good news.

Harlan?

- I've found a way to get it out of you, Jess.

- How?

- There's only one way,

but I don't think you are gonna be able to do it.

- I'll do anything. Anything at all.

- Well stop fighting it, then. Stop fighting it.

Just let the transformation take hold

and let it take you completely.

And you'll be able to infect one of the others.

You'll be able to pass it on.

- You mean... - I mean,

let the transformation take hold

and you will be able to pass the curse

from you to one of the others.

You won't be possessed anymore, Jess.

It's what you want, isn't it?

- How would I pass it on?

- You can infect their blood with yours.

- There must be another way.

- There isn't. Not that I found.

Look, I might find another way, but I wouldn't bank on it.

And if you are telling me it's getting stronger,

then we just haven't got time.

- These people are my friends, Harlan!

- Do you want to get rid of it or not?

'Cause otherwise,

the alternative is that it takes you, right?

It will take you completely.

You won't make it anymore, Jess.

It'll eat you away.

First your body, then your voice,

your mind, your memories.

This thing will take you completely,

it will eat away at you until there's nothing left inside.

But a shape wear your skin.

Jess, it is driven by an insatiable need to feed.

That is all it does. All it ever does.

It feeds, Jess.

- But if we have to do it this way,

can't we go to a prison or something?

Find a murderer, someone that really deserves it?

- Do you think you can do all that by nightfall?

- Of course I can't.

- [Harlan] Then pick one. Pick one, Jess.

It is them or you.

- I need this out of me.

- Then you know what you need to do.

(Jess sobbing)

- Anyone fancy a good night?

Oh, just you, ghosted by your lover again.

- [Alex] Give her a rest, Tyler.

- No, but seriously,

is he gonna be doing that the whole time?

Just sort of popping in and out?

'Cause...

Well, that's not dodgy at all, is it?

A weird hermit man, just watching us from the trees?

Wait, is he watching us right now?

Harlan?

Sorry about the hermit comment, mate.

Didn't mean it, but you know,

if you wouldn't mind sort of whistling a tune

next time you plan on paying us a visit,

something jaunty, so we know it's you coming.

That would be great.

- Tyler? - Yep?

- Shut up.

(Maya chuckles) - Charming.

Ow. Oh, fuck.

Oh shit.

- [Maya] Oh, that looks bad.

(Tyler whimper) Oh no, oh shit.

That looks bad. Oh, it looks bad.

(Tyler gagging)

- It's fine, I've got my big boy pants on.

- [Maya] No, no, you're definitely gonna need some stitches.

- [Tyler] Oh no, I'm fine. (animal growling)

- I've got some antiseptic wipes

and some bandages in the first aid kit.

It's in the tent, Jess.

- Jess, the bag!

- Oh, sorry.

- [Maya] Okay? - Oh, that's better.

It's a scratch. I'm fine.

Thank you. - Thanks.

(intense music) (animal growling)

- Ow, ow, ow! Let me do it.

- Okay, okay! (Tyler groaning)

- Look, we'll leave it like this just for now.

And then we can go to A&E when we get into town, yeah?

- Honestly guys, honestly guys. It's just a scratch.

- Will you guys be okay with your bags?

Huh?

- Your bags are heavy, right?

Maybe you should stay another night. Let it heal.

- Jess. It's okay, you know?

We get it. We can go.

We shouldn't have just turned up like that. I'm sorry.

We're sorry.

- No, I'm sorry.

I just had this vision of me like,

single-handedly making a discovery.

I was being selfish.

You guys should stay.

- It's okay, we can go.

- Well, I'd quite like to stay

if my vote counts for anything.

Providing I don't bleed to death, of course.

- Alex?

- Only if Jess wants me here.

- Then that settles it.

(zipper sliding) (Tyler groaning)

- The fuck is this?

A fucking death trap out here.

(liquid splashing)

(trees shuffling)

Yeah, no. I'm not playing this game.

(liquid splashing)

(animal growling)

- Uh... Harlan, mate?

(animal growling)

Um, if this is you, it's not funny.

(animal growling)

(animal roaring) (Tyler screaming)

(skin and clothes ripping) (Tyler continues screaming)

(intense music)

(animal howling)

- Tyler? (Maya gasps)

(Maya screaming)

(Maya sobbing) Alex!

Oh, no, no...

(Maya sobbing) - Maya! What's...

Oh, fuck!

We gotta get out of here. We need to call the police.

- Oh my God, is that...

- He's been ripped to shreds!

- Maya, just, one of you get your phone,

see if you have signal.

We need to get out of here now.

- We just, we need to take a minute

and get our heads around this.

- Are you joking, Jess?

This has been off from the start and so have you.

We need to leave now!

No, it's worse at night. If we leave, he'll follow us.

- Who? The hermit?

- No, I didn't mean...

- Harlan, where is he? Could he have done this?

- You can't be serious! - I dare be serious.

- Look at him, Alex. A person could not have done that!

- All the more reason for us to get the fuck out of here

before whatever it is comes back!

- No, it's pitch black.

I won't be able to lead us back

to the road until morning.

We're safer here.

- Safe? What about this is safe?

Where were you?

- What? - Where have you been?

Why weren't you in your tent,

it's in the middle of the fucking night.

- I needed to pee!

- And you just happened to miss Ty's body on your way past?

- Well, well it must have happened while I was peeing!

- Jess, I don't know what was going on.

Not here. Not with you.

But we need to leave, please!

- Alex, listen to me.

If we leave now, then whatever did this to Tyler,

it will get us too, okay?

I know it. Please?

We need to stick together and wait this out.

- Fuck. Fuck!

Fine, as soon as it gets light, we are leaving.

- Maybe we can stay in one of the tents together?

No, we need to go to the iron circle.

- [Alex] What?

- The iron will protect us.

- What does, what does that even mean?

- We will have an advantage.

We can see if anything's coming

and we can use the stakes as weapons if we need to.

- [Alex] We'll be sitting ducks!

- I'd feel safer in the tent.

- No, and we'll be completely blind.

We won't be able to see if anything's coming, please.

Guys, I need you to trust me!

Just for tonight.

Okay look, I don't care what you guys are doing,

but I'm going to the iron circle.

- All right.

But we need to cover him first.

- I know that he sometimes really fuckin' annoyed me,

but I loved him! (Maya sobbing)

- Come on Maya, we have to go.

- I don't wanna leave him.

- It's not safe here.

- He twitched, he twitched, look!

He's here, he's alive, he's alive!

He's alive! - It's impossible, Maya.

Just grief. There, he's gone.

There's nothing more we can do now.

Sorry.

- Come on, we have to go.

(Maya sniffling)

(bones snapping)

(Tyler gasping)

(pages rustling)

- Bind to the soil.

Bind to the earth. Bind to the roots.

Bind. Bind.

To bind a beast, you must fall within the ring.

Surrounded by the rust sealed, unbroken.

The older the iron, stronger the seal.

Okay...

The older the iron, the stronger the seal.

The heart of the curse must cease in the ring.

Settle the connection. Spill the blood in the ring.

Only the ring.

Huh, that's it.

That's it! That's it!

(intense music)

(bones cracking)

- Tyler, Tyler! - You can't leave!

You can't leave. - Get off me!

(bones cracking) (Tyler screaming)

(Tyler continues screaming)

- What?

(Tyler screams)

- What's happening?!

(wolf growling)

- Tyler?

(wolf howling)

(Maya whimpering)

- He can't come in a circle, okay?

(wolf growling) (Jess whimpering)

(wolf continues growling)

(Maya sobbing)

- You did it! You actually did it!

- What the fuck is going on? What just happened?

- We're all gonna die, aren't we?

- Tell us what the fuck is going on now. Everything!

- There's a curse in the ironwoods.

A creature.

It's a rootwolf.

- And the rootwolf?

- Centuries ago it was bound here.

It was trapped.

Jess, uh...

Jess set it free.

- I came to the area a while ago to document it,

to raise some money so that we could do a proper dig here.

I was stupid. I didn't know anything about the area

and I pulled one of the steaks.

Whatever was trapped here

whatever the iron was holding, I set it free.

- What, Jess?

- It got me.

Oh, I don't really remember what happened after that.

I woke up in the woods in the morning

and I had other injuries, but they healed.

- Oh?

- Well, you saw what it did to Tyler.

It completely ripped him apart.

This though, this stage,

and I've been researching it ever since.

It's what led me to Harlan.

- So...

So you turn, y-you turn into what Tyler just became?

- Not anymore.

- Wh-what is that mean?

- So to end it, we need to bind it again.

- We figured out how to do it.

- There you go.

The only way to do that is to kill a host in the iron ring.

We didn't know that earlier.

All we did know was how to pass it on

so that Jess wouldn't be infected.

- What do you mean pass it on? Jess?

- [Maya] Jess?

- I killed Tyler.

I turned and infected him to save myself.

- What?!

- I didn't ask you to come here.

I didn't ask any of you to come.

I thought me and Harlan could figure out

a different way to stop it.

- There is no other way, Jess. - I know!

- What do we do with that?

How do we kill something like that?

I didn't mean for any of this to happen.

I didn't want any of it to happen.

I just, I wanted it out of me. I needed it out of me!

- You did that to Ty on purpose.

What's your connection to this?

Why do you know this weird stuff? Why are you here?

- It was years ago.

My...

My sister was,

she was killed.

By something.

- The rootwolf?

- Oh yeah.

I watched it transform her.

She gave me this, but I couldn't protect her.

And it infected her.

It changed her.

She, she couldn't take it anymore.

And I...

I couldn't-I couldn't save her.

I couldn't save her, but-

So she did the only thing

that she thought she could do.

Just, to make pain go away.

- So she took her own life?

- Right here, in the iron ring.

I didn't understand it at the time.

Ever since then I've...

I've been obsessed with trying

to find out about it and work out how to stop it.

- So what do we do now?

- We have to bind it again.

- How are we gonna do that?

How can we kill something like that?

- We have to get it into the iron ring.

It's the only way, it has to be done here.

- [Alex] How, though? It just won't even come in!

- Blood.

Blood. It's blood.

When Tyler cut himself, that's when I...

That's when I decided to do it.

The blood, it was calling to me.

I couldn't think straight.

I wanted to kill him there and then.

That's how we do it. That's how we can get him.

- What do you mean? - I'll cut myself.

- Wait, Jess. - No, I'll cut myself

and he won't be able to resist.

No matter how hard the iron repels him, he'll come.

He'll come.

- Jess, there has to be another way.

(intense music)

- [Alex] Are you sure about this?

- I feel like I'm thinking straight

for the first time in months.

I have to do this, okay?

It has to be me.

- Jess, I...

- You ready, Jess?

(blood squelching) (Jess whimpering)

- Ah, okay.

We've only got one shot of this, okay?

When it comes for me, you need to kill it.

(intense music)

(wolf growling)

(music intensifying)

(Jess screaming)

- Jess, are you okay?

(Jess speaking indistinctly)

(Harlan yelling)

(Alex yelling) (fists pounding)

- No, no, no, Alex! Alex no!

Alex, you need to kill him inside the circle!

(Jess whimpering)

- I'm sorry, he was gonna kill you!

Ty-Tyler!

- [Maya] Wait, he's back to normal.

- No, no, no, no! (wolf howling)

No, no, no, no, no!

Jess..

- It's back in me! I could feel it, the rootwolf!

- There must be a way to stop it.

- No, no! You saw what happened to Tyler.

If I turn here, I will kill you both.

- How do we help you? What do we do?

- You have to replace the iron.

- Where is it?

There's the one we took and then,

and then in my bag in the tent!

Go! (Jess gasps)

- Jess? Jess. - Alex,

you need to kill me inside the circle.

- Jess, there's no way I can kill you.

- You have to.

What happened to Tyler, it should have been me.

(Jess groaning) - Jess...

- I can't, it's screaming! I can feel it in my veins!

It's filling my body and mind, it wants me to kill you.

Alex, you need to do it, okay?

I'm sorry.

- No...

I'm really sorry. For everything.

(Jess screaming) (bones cracking)

- Jess? No, Jess! (Jess continues screaming)

- Quick, we haven't got much time!

Quickly!

(wolf growling) (Maya shouting)

(intense music) (wolf growling)

(Maya screaming)

(Maya panting)

(Jess gasping)

(somber music)

(Maya sobbing)

(somber music)

(somber music continues)

(somber music continues)
