Right, okay.
What?
Tom did what?!
Oh God, I don't have time for Tom today.
Let's get this goin', it's
As big as Arizona was, this is fantastic.
Mind the doorframe here, Wanita. You have her? Got it?
Oh my God, this is a disgrace.
Somebody needs to get out here
with a feather duster or something cause
some of these antiques are really dusty.
The booth's good.
Good job, team.
- Mm-hmm. - Sharon?
Yeah.
Hi.
- Oh. - Just one second.
Couple of fruits.
Hmm.
Okay.
Hey, there. Um do you own this piece?
I have since 1952.
That's fantastic.
Now, are you folks,
willing to have it appraised on camera?
Ooh, on television? Mercy.
- Well, you betcha. - Sweet.
Josh,
I need you to take these fine folks to the green room,
and get them in for hair and makeup.
Yep. You got it, boss.
- Folks, follow me. - He'll take care of ya.
Oh.
Straight to me, right to this table, here.
It's a nice clear path for you.
Come right in.
Yes.
Alright.
What?
There's no one here.
Ah!
A white and blue pattern of traditional landscapes.
Note the craggy rocks,
the weeping willow,
the pavilion on the footbridge,
as it sweeps across the calm waters,
in order to evoke a sense of tranquility,
to coincide with the pleasure of the libation.
Now.
The difference between this,
and the authentic set from the Ming Dynasty is that,
this is a replica.
Well-made, but,
a replica nonetheless.
I know, real replica. So how much?
For insurance purposes,
though I doubt that's warranted, I would put it at the
$50 to $75 range.
I will sell it to you for $45.
Oh, no, Mr. Jin. We don’t buy here.
Do you like Canada?
You liked the Falls.
We could get in a boat,
row right across Lake Erie. It's not that cold.
Think of it as an opportunity to educate the public.
They’re ready for you.
I don't,
I don't trust that man.
You're fine.
Okay, Mr. Lucarelli, what typically happens is,
Joy will ask you a few questions about your collection.
Then she will ask you how it came into your possession,
and why it's important to you.
And what it is you would like to find out.
Do you need to see me? Can I stand over there?
You just need to hear me.
You know on the news, when they blur your face
and distort your voice?
Uh-huh, okay.
Then Joy will talk about the historical significance
and finish with an
estimated value.
- Okay? Alright. - Uh--
You know, just relax have a good time.
Be yourself.
- Yeah. - Mm-hmm.
I am not getting paid enough for this.
Ha, you know? I remember my first time on camera.
Thinking about all of those people watching.
Sound.
Rolling.
And action!
So,
Gary, we just have a limited amount of time
to see these few pieces.
Uh, when did
you start collecting all of these,
and what prompted your interest
in Black Americana?
No interest here.
It was my grandmother’s collection that I inherited.
Can you see him on camera two?
Alright, cut. Mr. Luchachini,
Uh Lucarelli, would you like some water?
What? No. Sorry?
First-time jitters.
Everybody.
Okay, you know what, let's try it again.
Speed, rolling.
And action.
So, Gary,
when did you collect all of these, and,
what prompted your interest in Black Americana?
First of all, it’s not my collection.
- Ah. - It was
my grandmother’s.
And I I’m not here to defend it.
I’m not here to make any political statements.
Even though my wife would like me to.
No. You know what? I hate it.
Oh.
I
HATE it!
Do do you know what it's like
to love your grandmother
and wonder
what kind of a person owns things like this?
On the one hand, she's making me pancakes,
and handing me cookies,
and on the other they're coming out of these.
I mean at 6, all you know is they make you happy.
But then time passes, and you are like, wait a minute.
That's very it's very uh it's confusing,
for a child.
You still seem to be a bit confused.
Of course, I am! Why did she leave this to me?
Did she think I was staring at them,
because I wanted them?
And not cookies?
And frankly,
it doesn't matter, because I own them
now, and it’s hurting my marriage,
my friendships
How can I teach
social stereotypes,
if I can’t reconcile this in my life?
Gary, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries,
merchandisers and advertisers created and perpetuated,
racial stereotypes through objects
directed at white consumers.
One of the most enduring caricatures,
romanticized the house servant,
and the Antebellum South, it was a way of living that
never even existed.
The commodification of the joyful Mammy stereotype
stood in contrast to the stark realities
of the African-American women,
who had few employment opportunities
outside of domestic service.
The Jim Crow-era kitchen was just lined
with negative stereotypes on cereal boxes,
grocery-list reminders,
and cookie jars.
Like you’ve brought here today.
Jesus.
And now, one of the most pervasive
and commercially successful
uses of the Mammy archetype
was for a ready-made pancake mix,
named after a song from a minstrel show,
called “Old Aunt Jemima."
But we called it, "Ain't Jo Mama."
But it was
"Aunt Jemima." You see that?
Now, the marketing people took it a a step further,
when they hired Nancy Green.
She was a former slave,
and they made her the face of the brand.
Its success was so great,
it led to a whole line of promotional products.
And this dominated the market for over a century,
until finally,
in 2021,
they retired the name.
So,
people of color,
to reclaim their story,
began to collect the Jim Crow-era artifacts,
as a way to memorialize
America's racist history.
And now that brings me to you.
Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned
Now, the price of Black Memorabilia,
has increased significantly in-- Oh, no, no, babe.
- Yuck, put it down. - I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- You don't play with these. - You're right. I'm sorry.
You just turn that day off.
With a collection this size,
it's probably worth a pretty penny.
Even this salt and pepper shaker you can fetch fifty dollars
for that at auction.
- Shame Shame! - Hmm.
Yeah, well, it is.
It is a shame.
It brings up some painful collective memories,
as a nation.
But, Gary, it’s important that we talk about these things.
Because I cannot absolve
- your grandmother. - Nonna Nina.
Nonna Nina.
Maybe she was just a product of the time? Maybe she wasn’t.
But I’m glad that you're teaching about
social stereotypes, because
it's our history and it is our present.
Just because a brand changes its name
doesn't mean that it doesn't still exist.
You see, racism isn't something that you can just
neatly tuck away in a box.
Okay? So,
I thank you for bringing this in today.
Is it inappropriate
if I get a hug?
- Yes, it is. Don't touch me. - That's fair.
Red leather, yellow leather,
Red leather, yellow leather.
- Zip, zap, zap, zip. - Zip, zap, zap, zip.
- Zap, zap, zip, zip. - Zap, zap, zip, zip.
- Zap, zap - Zap, zap uh
Whoa whoa whoa What are you
What are you doing?
It’s a microphone so we can hear you on camera.
Well, let my wife do it.
Mask!
In a mask.
My man. In the mask.
- Let's shoot this pig. - Okay.
and that’s when his mother
went over to the China cabinet and brought out these plates.
I didn’t want to take them, but,
she said,
"If they reminded Bobby of you, then I want you to have them,
so you can remember Bobby."
Well, you and Bobby obviously had a special bond.
War, war will do that to you.
Now, homoerotic pottery was
quite prevalent in ancient
Greco-Romancivilization.
And there were two distinct styles,
The Black Figure pottery preceded the Red Figure.
Now what you have here,
is a simply, excellent example of the Red figure tradition,
which started in Athens,
probably at the beginning of the sixth century BCE.
Uh hom hom hmm
What? I don't understand--
It's really the same process, just reversed.
More style choice, instead of an evolution
in technique.
Uh no, no, I mean the part about the ho-ho-mo-mo-hom
- The homoeroticism? - Hmm.
Oh, well,
it wasn't just on plates, it was on jugs, vases,
temples, courthouses,
bathhouses, obviously.
Decoration was depicting a natural
and accepted way of life.
You know, dear,
I have been trying to tell you for the last sixty-three years.
It's four men fucking.
Gonna have to bleep that.
I got this doll from my cousin Tom,
who got it from his grandfather's second cousin,
onceremoved.
He used to be a bellringer, for the Kay-Holly-Kenny Symphony.
This is a Walt Whitman first edition.
Copy that. I thought I left him outside.
Oh, that’s good.
I’ve got to head over to Joy.
She’s got a third segment.
Sorry, boys.
What?
Nobody’s ever done a third segment before!
My God, her name is Joy,
but she brings no thing but sorrow.
We need to find a third.
Not right now.
Oh! For the show.
Yes.
Let's do it.
- Let's go. - Come on.
God, this business is such a grind!
It's like a hustle, hustle, hustle!
- What I need is just one-- - Excuse me!
Does anyone work here?
Um. Do you mind if I ask you to put on a pair
of Gaylord Archival gloves?
Of course, I-I'd love to Charlie, I insist.
Sharon?
Could you bring me a pair of Gaylord gloves?
Josh, Gaylords.
Sure thing.
Oh.
We got to start.
Sound, rolling.
Action!
Charlie, you are the youngest person
we have ever had at Lost & Found.
What brings you here?
My dad was my best friend. He died when I was six.
He left me this letter that was passed down from his grandma.
She told him that it was passed down
from William McKinley Duncan,
who was the son of Sarah McKinley Duncan,
the sister of President McKinley.
Whoa, that’s a lot of genealogy.
Someone’s been really looking into his family tree.
Yeah, but I can’t prove that it was
written by President McKinley.
I mean, I’ve read books,
and I’ve gone to the Presidential Museum and Library.
But they didn't have anything, and I just couldn't find proof.
Oh, so maybe we can help you you with that.
You know, we could do a,
a handwriting analysis.
But sometimes one method won't work.
It's like science, you may have to try
a number of methods to authenticate a particular thing.
So, we look closer,
and look at the content.
Can you tell us what the letter says, or read it?
- Sure. - Okay.
"My dearest sister Sarah, my spirit soars
with the thrill of battle,
as I finally saw action while serving
meals to my fearless brothers
on the frontlines today,
at Antietam Creek.
Do not fret nor allow those golden locks to turn to gray,
for I shall return to the rolling hills of Ohio.
Until then, take care of Washington Post.
Forever your loving brother, William."
Okay, so,
historically, we know that he was,
at the Battle of Antietam as
a commissary sergeant.
We know that
Sarah was the name of his sister.
She also lived in Cleveland.
And Washington Post
was the name of the yellow double-headed parrot
that he had.
Now, President McKinley,
he was one of the modern presidents.
So, he typed all of his correspondence.
It's not easy to find an example of his handwriting,
except for his signature.
But we believe that, indeed,
this is a match.
Yes, indeed.
What's also significant is that it dates
prior to his presidency.
That, combined with its highly personalized nature.
So, Charlie,
do you have any idea how much this letter might be worth?
I don't really know.
I have never really looked into that kind of stuff.
Well, in terms of market value, this is on the high end
of what you might expect for a less popular president.
At auction, I would say, that it would be between,
ten and twelve thousand dollars.
Oh my God, it's Charlie.
Let’s go, Gladys.
- No. - What?
But, that's not really, why you brought the letter,
is it?
According to what your dad said,
this letter would prove that you, young Charlie,
are one of the few remaining descendants
of President William McKinley.
I knew it!
So, Charlie,
what are you going to do with this letter?
It would help greatly towards college.
- That, that means more to me. - Oh, it does.
- Ah, excuse me. - What?
If I may quote from The Wizard of Oz,
"Though our homes be gray,
and dreary,
there is no place the people of Cleveland,
would rather live than in this country.
There's no place like home."
Now, as Mayor of Cleveland,
I would like to proclaim January 29th,
William McKinley Day.
And announce the first annual
“William McKinley Appreciation Parade.”
Through triumphs and heartbreaks,
it is the spirit and resiliency of the people of Cleveland,
that carries us forward with hope.
Charles Toddy,
this whole parade and day was your idea.
Would you do us the honor,
and be our Grand Marshal?
Wo Wo Would I?
But
can my mom sit with me?
Sure!
We did it.
We did!
Let's get a photo.
I don't understand why we're not on the main stage.
Clearly this is a very important work of art.
The most exciting thing you are going to see today.
- She's a real piece of work. - Excuse me?
Okay, we all ready here guys?
Huh, finally
I really don’t understand
Alright.
- Sound. - Why
Speed.
Rolling.
Action!
- So, tell us Sophia. - Sophie.
Hugh.
Sorry Sophie, how did you come upon this?
My husband has been doing quite a
bit of traveling in the Middle East.
On his last trip, the kids and I met up with him in Tunisia.
If you haven't been, you really must go.
We've been.
Where we,
picked up this absolutely exquisite piece
on a hill overlooking the bay.
Anyway, I noticed a small room in the back.
I opened the door.
I couldn’t resist.
And there it was.
And I said,
"I'll take it!"
And he tried to talk me out of it.
But Sophie Mathers--
Sophie Mathers?
Of 20657 Hickory Lane, Hunting Valley?
Thanks for the vase, ma'am.
Who the hell are you?
Yeah, who the hell are you?
I'm your postal carrier.
Umm, could you please edit my address out of the broadcast?
Wanita.
"Juno happened to look down--"
Oh my God, let me stop you.
Please.
Thank you for that exquisite detail.
You really made us feel like we were with you
when you bought it.
Unfortunately, we weren't.
If we had been, we'd have noticed that it was made of
Plaster of Paris,
instead of terracotta,
which was used in the first century CE.
And we would have recognized it from the British Museum.
- I was just about to say that. - But you didn't.
What are you saying?
It's a forgery, darling.
It's probably not worth the cost of shipping.
But I worked so hard to get here.
Even forgeries appreciate in value in 50 years.
It will be worth something once your kids inherit it.
My kids
But I was brought there by the Ambassador of Tunisia.
Sometimes it's not about who you know.
It's about what you know.
When one door closes, another opens.
And sometimes it's best to keep the door closed.
Oh!
Oops sorry.
This is savage.
- Mr. Anderson? - Yes, sir.
Hello.
I'm Dr. Austin Raybourne.
- It's a pleasure to meet you. - Pleasure is mine, sir.
Do you prefer Martin or Marty?
- Marty's okay. - Very well.
- You nervous? - A little.
Me too.
Speed.
Rolling.
Action.
So Marty, how many vases do you have in your collection?
Just under 300. I catalog 'em.
Okay and,
what made you choose these
specific three to bring to Lost & Found?
Well, I picked out the ones I wanted to take.
Then I had my dream and I added this one.
- This one? - Yes, sir.
Okay, but you feel that these are fairly representative?
- I'd say so. - Okay.
Then let's start with the one on the end there.
It is mass produced in China and if I turn it over,
You can clearly see "Made in China"
etched on the bottom.
So there is really no inherent value there.
That’s no surprise.
Now this next one is a
lovely crystal vase
that Wedgwood designed exclusively
for Bloomingdale's 1990 line.
Unfortunately, that line was discontinued
When Bloomingdale's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
in 1991.
Which does set the price up a little higher.
I would put this one
$100 to $125, at best.
But if you enjoy it, that's where
the real value lies, right?
- Indeed. - Alright now,
this next one here really piqued my interest.
You say this is the one from your dream.
- Yes, sir. - Okay.
I'm curious, Marty,
can you tell us why you started collecting vases?
Oh gosh
No one’s ever asked me.
Um, well. Let’s see.
I always dreamed of opening a restaurant with my mom.
Rosemary.
Yeah, uh
I was never happier than when I was cooking next to her.
She passed last Christmas.
And when my mom died,
there were a lot of flowers for the funeral.
The thing about flowers is that they die too.
And people send flowers, you know they mean well.
And after a while, they're done.
But vases.
They come and they stay forever.
So I took them all.
Then I started my collection.
It doesn’t really matter what they look like.
I just go with how they make me feel.
Thank you, Marty.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Grief is deeply personal, and
often takes different forms of expression
But may I ask,
how did you acquire this particular vase?
Mr. Jin, his vintage shop.
He let me have it for free.
Well, Mr. Jin is an invaluable friend.
Tell me,
are you familiar with the Austrian architect
and industrial designer,
Josef Olbrich?
- No. - Okay, well.
Josef Olbrich was born in what is now the Czech Republic.
But he studied in Vienna at the Academy of Fine Arts,
where he met a brilliant young painter
named Gustav Klimt.
Is that name familiar?
- Uh huh. - Okay so,
in 1897, Olbrich and Klimt founded a movement of artists.
They were painters, architects and sculptors.
And they broke away from traditionalism in the arts
They called themselves "De Wiener Secession."
And they had a powerful impact on the Art Nouveau movement.
But Olbrich was not only an architect,
In fact, he took a holistic approach
to all design, including
furniture, pottery, and glassware.
While Klimt is very well known for his
sexually-charged portraits,
what is not well known of him is that his first
love was glassware.
And he convinced Olbrich to join him
in experimenting with new techniques in glass art.
Which, by the way, is my specialty,
as if you didn't know.
You know glass is, of course, a very fragile material.
It starts as liquid sand.
But heat it to 1500°C, it becomes a
molten liquid which can then
be shaped into an infinite number
of forms, colors, like magic.
Which Olbrich and Klimt would soon discover.
But this was also a transitional period.
And they came to understand that before
they could add back to the flourish
that we see in Art Nouveau,
they had to strip away the ornamentation of the past
in order to arrive at the bare essence.
A simple vessel where form follows function.
And that was really the birth of early Modernism.
You’re probably wondering where all this is leading.
I'm happy to tell you,
what you’ve brought us here today is an extremely rare
product of that collusion between Olbrich and Klimt.
And frankly, it is one of the best examples
of early modernism. This piece defines
a very brief but critical period in art history.
Identified here, if I may,
"De Wiener Secession, Vienna, 1897."
And I must tell you honestly, I got a chill when I saw it.
In fact, I have only seen two in my life.
One is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
in New York City,
and the other one right here.
Sir, do you have any idea how much this might be worth?
I have no idea.
Well, on a really bad day, retail
you could see in the neighborhood
of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
But conservatively, at auction,
It is possible you could see at least
twice that much and maybe more.
Congratulations, Mr. Anderson.
And thank you, on behalf of Lost & Found.
Oh my God, she was right.
Who?
Ma.
Oh okay
Oh my
You're serious?
Oh absolutely, I promise you.
There are only two known in the world.
- Thank you very much - Thank you!
- I had no idea. - Well I hope you do now.
I do.
Oh my
I think I'm going to need some security
Well you're going to have to insure it as well.
Needs more rosemary.
You're very popular today, Chef.
Table three is asking about your special ingredient.
- Oh really? - Yes.
- I'll take care of that - Alright!
Hmm.
Hello, Mr. Jin.
Enjoying the hasenpfeffer?
I heard you wanna know what the secret ingredient is
Rosemary.
Rosemary
Hello, ladies.
Ah!
My favorite desserts, especially that one.
Thanks for coming in. Good to see you.
Hello, ladies.
You used to pick me up in that '54 Chevy convertible.
- Do you remember? - How could I forget?
Vixen red with a white top.
My father was convinced that you were a troublemaker.
But my mother thought you were cute.
I was, wasn't I?
We both were.
You still are.
Hi, can I get you anything else?
Oh no, thank you. It was lovely.
Oh I'm so happy to hear.
Now I do have to close out early,
but please, take your time.
You know you look so familiar, I can't quite place it.
Well, it’s our first time here.
We usually go to the club on Fridays.
But my wife wanted to try something new so we
drove to the East side.
Oh I love that, that's so romantic.
I hope I can find someone that makes me as happy
as you two are.
How long have you been married?
Three years and we have a little boy.
It's sixty-three years, dear.
And he was the best little boy in the world.
What was his name?
Charlie!
That’s my son's name.
Well
I hope I see you both again soon.
Have a beautiful night.
Coming through. Move.
Watch your elbow.
Go Hannah!
That’s my daughter.
God, they're terrible.
I love you.
Aww.
Love you too.
Best day ever!
Charlie! Charlie!
Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars,
but conservatively, at auction
it is possible you could see at least
twice that much and maybe more.
Congratulations, Mr. Anderson!
I'm Tom Hanks.
Hey, thanks for watching Lost & Found.
See you next week in Poughkeepsie!
Wait, what? They didn't even show me.
Hmm. I guess we don't have to move again.
All that worrying for nothing? I
I can't believe this is how it ends.
It's grape juice.
Wow
