[chainsaw revving]

[mystic music]

[heartbeat thumping]

[static buzzing]

[VCR tape whirring]

- Okay, I think I'm ready.

I got all my notes.

Let's do this.

Good evening.

I'm the head of the military experimental facility 05081984.

And tonight I'm here to explain the stages of sleep

and how our groundbreaking experiment

will keep you awake an unprecedented 30 days.

Yeah, you heard me, 30 days.

Now you're asking how is this gonna work?

Well, let's just discuss this.

Sleep is divided into two main phases,

REM and non-REM.

Let's start with the non-REM stages.

Stage one, the lightest stage of sleep.

You spend like only a few minutes.

You know, breathing slows, muscles relax,

brainwaves begin to drift.

They begin.

You know, that's when you're going into that stage

where you're like, you're half asleep.

You know, that's stage one.

Stage two,

the stage where you spend most of your night.

This is when you start drifting off.

You know, this is where a lot of that

emptiness, I guess you would say.

Your heart rate and body temperature drops,

and brain produces speed.

Spineless, that's called.

Okay, third stage, get ready for this one.

Now, this is a slow wave sleep.

This is the deep sleep where like, you know,

people are poking you and you're out.

You're deep.

It's the most,

the most detailed stage.

It's where you're mostly,

you're at the will of your dream stage, let's say.

The one you really need

to feel human again in the morning.

That's the one where you get the most rest in you.

And you know, when you say, I got that deep sleep,

that's stage three.

Okay, so that's the three stages.

Now we're gonna go into the REM stage.

The REM stage.

[static buzzing]

It's wide awake, and then your dreams take over.

So it's that stage where you know,

it goes if you understand what I'm saying, you know?

Everything, you have no control anymore.

You think you are, but there's no control.

And now you're in dream state.

So the record,

I think the record for sleeplessness

was 11 days, 264 hours.

That's what I have in my notes.

I don't know, but that was the record.

And the person was, pfft, you know.

So that's what we have down as the record.

Our experiment, we're nearly gonna triple that.

[static buzzing]

This is what, you know, I have all the numbers here,

but this is fictional right now.

It's never been done before.

No chemical exists

that can safely keep a human awake for 30 days.

I have found,

with my studies and my team,

we found a scientist

who will be running this experiment.

His name is code name Father Goose.

And he will perform the new sleep experiment

on test subjects.

We've done it in the past,

but now we're going full force on this.

We're going with the test subjects,

and we're gonna see, in an experimental stage,

like I said, monitored safely for 30 days.

The gas will be called,

to put them in this stage is called Vapor 76.

Remember that.

You're gonna be hearing about that.

It's Vapor 76 and it's completely safe.

He even has hired a team of his own,

with my guys and on his own,

to complete the experiment.

Now you just gotta ask you a question.

And I'll get questions from everybody.

But I just want to ask you,

are you ready to make history?

[eerie music] Are you ready to make history?

Well, we are here to make history.

and to make this work.

So, please, have faith in us,

and we're gonna make this work.

Thank you.

[crowd clapping]

I've been told there would be no questions.

[eerie music continues]

[lightly tense music]

- [sighing] This fucking looks really cozy.

- Cozy my ass.

Really have to be stuck in here for 30 days?

- That's the plan.

Might as well get comfortable while you're in here.

- [#2] Yeah, screw that.

The fuck is this place?

- Look, say what you want,

but don't say anything to me.

- [#2] Well, let's get this party started.

[chime ringing]

- [announcer] So sorry for the delay,

and I hope everyone is settled in and comfortable.

We're about to disperse the gas now,

so just breathe normally and you'll be okay.

Might feel a little lightheaded at first,

but that is totally and completely normal.

Thank you, and remember,

we will be monitoring you at all times.

Thank you.

[chime ringing]

[lightly tense music]

- On your feet, gentlemen.

Now, you might not be used to things being so homely,

but you are veterans.

So I think you can all relate.

We have a few creature comforts here on the floor

for the duration of your stay.

I hope you can all make it for the entire 30 days.

If you have to take a piss,

I have four jars here on the floor.

You're smart enough to know each one is for each one of you.

Keep your piss separate.

Speaking of keeping your piss separate,

you did notice a pot here in the corner.

That's for number two.

If you don't flush it,

I'll make you a nice treat at the end of the week.

Wasn't a joke.

That said,

any questions?

- [#2] When do we get paid?

- Excellent question.

If you read the fine print,

all questions must have been submitted in writing.

That said, we're gonna go ahead and make our exit.

We'll get the experiments underway.

Have this for you boys.

You can go ahead and fight over it.

Come along.

- [#2] Let's all get to know one another.

What do you say?

- Right, we're gonna be here for 30 days,

so you know what, that just might not be a bad idea.

[somber dramatic music]

- So as death enters the room,

we all just sit back and wait.

- What are you trying to say?

- Please tell me you've heard the stories

of what they conducted this experiment in the past

and the results.

- No, I haven't.

- Let's just keep it that way.

Besides, you know what?

All that bull was back in World War I, World War II.

They've already perfected it by now,

otherwise we wouldn't be here.

- Yeah, that's absolutely true.

And what a wonderful speech.

- Yeah, whatever.

- Oh wow.

Looks like number four over here

is gonna be the fun one in the group. [laughing]

- Look, I'm serious.

Are we gonna be all right?

Look, let's just chill out, relax.

And this is something they told me when I got deployed.

Get used to your surroundings and everybody in your team.

Just get comfortable in this room.

It's gonna be going a lot easier for everybody in this room.

Stick together.

Keep your heads up.

We'll get outta here alive.

Probably just might get paid.

- You have a point there. [laughing]

[ominous music intensifying]

[birds chirping]

- Yeah.

Oh, it's a mystery.

- [#1] Dealer's choice.

How the hell do you know what's in there?

- I don't.

- [#1] And you're still gonna eat that shit?

- [#4] Well, I mean, it's in a fucking can, right?

- [#1] Yeah, but there's only so many people

you can trust these days.

Especially the people who fucking put us in here.

- [#4] Yeah, well do you honestly think

that that's enough food for 30 days?

It's all gonna get ate anyways.

It doesn't fucking matter.

- [#1] I don't know about these guys,

but I sure as hell ain't gonna try eating none of that shit.

- Oh yeah. - And how else are you

gonna be able to eat?

- [#1] Well I guess I go down with my ship, captain.

I ain't gonna have a damn thing

until I get outta here probably.

- I hope they bring another bucket.

- [#1] Yeah, if only we were able

to waffle stomp that shit.

You're disgusting.

- Hold on, hold on a second.

I just noticed something.

We have to use this bucket for the bathroom?

- Well it appears so, genius.

- I mean, it's better than taking a piss

on the floor, right?

- I suppose.

- [sighing] So how's everybody feeling?

- It seems like we're all good.

It's only been just a day

so I think that question's just a little too early to ask.

- Yeah, I guess we're just used to staying up late anyways.

- I know I am.

I've been able to stay awake for five consecutive days.

So this whole process is a breeze for me.

- Same here.

It's been about that for me also.

- And how about you, number three?

When are you ready to join in on our conversation?

- Well, after the bombs dropped, I didn't sleep much.

It felt like forever,

but it was probably about five days,

- You guys- - Well,

it was five days for me.

I felt dead.

Imagine 25 more.

- The gas is supposed to do that to us.

And you know what's supposed to help us actually?

Not make us feel too bad, but they perfected it by now.

Otherwise we wouldn't be here.

- Sure, well, I seriously hope you're right on this one.

But time will tell.

And considering the number of days we have remaining,

that's not much time, now is it? [chuckling]

- No the hell, there's not.

- [#2] Amen.

- [#1] The way number four is eating those beans,

it's not just the only gas I'm worried about.

- [#2] He has a point.

- [#1] Don't get too comfortable eating those fucking cans.

You understand me here?

- What did you say?

- [#1] Think you had more than enough for one day.

Maybe it's about time you put that shit on hold.

There's four of us and there's not even

30 cans in that pile.

We need to ration this stuff

or we're gonna be eating each other by day 15.

- That's right.

Heck, we could start eating each other

by this day if we're not careful.

- Not if I got something to say about it.

We're gonna keep it all in line.

All right?

So my try, I'ma try my best to do what I can

to keep us all having a good head on our shoulders.

We're not gonna go crazy.

No cannibalistic behavior, no fucking gas problems.

We're gonna be all right.

We just pace ourselves with what we got.

We were all trained at some point

to deal with hunger, thirst, and everything else.

So I know damn well this is not your guys' first rodeo.

Sure as hell ain't mine.

[somber piano music]

- Look, that's your best one yet, my guy.

- I'm gonna try and improve a little bit more.

Army standard banner standards for my age.

They're like about two hours and 15 minutes.

Marines are about the same.

- You've been spending too much time at the VA hospital.

I better freshen up to…

My guy?

Are you okay?

- You didn't put any mayo on my egg sandwiches, did you?

- You're such a fucking clown.

- I figured I ain't shit if I wound up in this damn place.

I mean, don't get me wrong, nothing about you fellas.

But I feel like I got a lot more to prove out there.

I think I fucked up by not doing my country

some kind of deed and

I feel like I'm a fucking failure, you know?

I ain't get right with myself or any loved ones

before I took off and departed

and I ran away from my fucking troubles.

Maybe there's just something here that I need to prove.

Maybe somebody here feels the same.

Maybe you, probably you,

or hell even you.

Yeah.

I think it's about time that I get right.

We're gonna make it outta here though.

And I promise each and every one of you,

we'll come out on top.

[somber piano music]

Yeah, well.

It's beautiful anyway,

- Look, see,

just like you. [nose honking]

[somber piano music]

My guy, you really know how to kill a moment.

- Hey, you squeeze my nose, I break wind.

It's gonna be a good old time for all of us.

I feel like this gas is actually getting to me,

actually or something.

What about you, fly boy?

You have something to say?

Something you wanna get off your chest?

Probably?

Maybe.

Looks like you got something you want to say, you know?

Or maybe

I only got to know you just for a little bit longer, man.

But the question is,

I haven't done much time in the Corps, man.

Why'd you leave the Air Force?

What got you here?

- Well, I'll be honest with you.

I'm a little bit of an underachiever myself

at this job.

I don't even know how I figured out

out of basic, to be honest with you.

I made it.

I got put in a desk.

- Got anybody to call home?

- Huh?

- Do you have anybody to

look forward to when you call home?

Any wife, girlfriend, mom, dad, sibling,

something of that nature?

[somber piano music]

- Maybe when I get back, maybe I'll meet somebody.

I've been kind of on my own though, so I mean,

I don't really have nothing to go back to.

Really not a whole lot for me to do.

I mean, why not, you know?

I mean, if this works out, I mean,

could it be a part of something really big?

You know?

This could be really great.

Just turn the hands of time.

You know, this, this, this.

I mean, I'll be honest with you,

I don't know what to think about it.

I'm kind of hoping for the best.

I mean, I'm here.

You're here.

- I heard you were into like, what was it?

You got kitties and the little bunny rabbits

you got at your house or something.

- Yeah.

I like cats.

But I really like, I like the rabbits.

I want a rabbit farm.

I do taxidermy and a cat sanctuary.

next time you open your mouth,

make sure it's something meaningful.

'Cause you know at this point,

maybe I'll just die here peacefully

while you fuckers ride away

like some dead plants on the ran,

Father Patty's porch or whatever the fuck--

- [#2] You're the one claiming no loyalty or honor.

And yet here you are saying all the shit you're saying.

- I don't want to hear you say shit about honor.

I got a lot more honor in me

than you will ever fucking have

in any of the amount of days you got left

on this godforsaken earth.

Maybe you ain't got no honor, boy.

- I don't have honor? [ominous music]

[lid clanking]

- I can bring you something.

'Cause I'll be walking out of this storage like woo.

- You're proving my point right there.

You do not value loyalty.

I do.

I saw a lot of all of us out here.

[drowned out by music]

You are not about loyalty, not a fucking damn thing!

I know more than you do about it.

- What the fuck do you know about loyalty?

- I know you don't have it.

- Is that right?

- That's right.

- Fucking right on.

- That's absolutely right.

- [#1] Yeah I'm fucking goddamn right,

I'll fucking land on your ass right now

if you fucking get in my damn face!

- Get out of my face, I need to check on Number Three.

What happened to you, what happened?

What happened?

Get back.

What?

What the fuck happened?

Oh my god, Number Three.

Oh my gosh, Number Three.

Number Three?

Come on, come on.

What the fuck?

What the fuck?

I got shit in my eyes!

I got shit in my eyes! [screaming]

- See you've got shit for eyes.

So you got shit in your fucking eyes.

Who calls poop shit?

Who calls poop shit? [laughing]

Who calls poop shit, huh?

Who calls poop shit?

Poop shit, poop shit! [laughing]

[gate clanking]

[somber piano music]

[music fading]

[phone ringing]

- Ah.

Chingy!

- Bitch.

- What?

- You know what.

- What?

- Calling me Chingy, bitch.

- What would you rather call us,

rather have us call you Fucky?

- Chingy is a lot better than being called Fucky, tbh.

- How's the old job search going?

- It's deece.

Think I found something.

Make me a couple bucks in the meantime.

- Well, yeah?

Some kind of genius plan or diabolic scheme maybe?

- Well, hear me out.

- Yeah, here we go.

- Listen.

I found a flyer.

It's like for this independent sleep experiment.

Strictly for veterans conducted by

some guy named Father Goose.

And coincidentally enough,

it's literally located out there

in that Creek County storage unit.

Not sure if you remember that facility.

- (laughing) Creek fucking County.

Are you high?

- I've got a little bit left,

but I could sure as hell use an eighth.

- Yeah, I bet you could, sticky fingers.

But seriously though, a sleep experiment, Creek County?

- Alright, look, all jokes aside, dude,

if I can make it this full 30 days,

there's a cash prize.

I could really use that right about now.

- Cash prize for an experiment?

- Shit, man, I don't know.

- Look, what are they testing?

- A sleep agent called Vapor 76.

- I don't know, man.

Shouldn't you wait till they conduct a little more research?

- Why you being such a hater?

- Hater?

I'm just trying to help you think this through, don't you?

You don't just accept things

because the government says it's good to do.

Besides, what the hell are you gonna do

about the veteran part anyway?

- Well, I figured that I could borrow your old house.

And since I've been hanging around this old vets office

at the VA,

I can convince people that I'm a soldier.

- Well look, this isn't for a movie.

It isn't for your, then I guess it's not so in doubt.

- I'm not using it to get a free chicken sandwich.

I play a clown in a veteran's hospital.

That doesn't make me a clown.

So if I play this sleep experiment the right way,

it is solely for entertainment.

- Look, there's a difference between walking the walk

and talking the talk.

Trust me, once you go in, you don't come back the same.

- You seem fine.

- Yeah, I'm fine. (chuckling)

- Could I just have some blind support

to do what I want when I want?

- Yeah, but not if you're going to claim

to be something you are not.

- [#1] Well you say I'm a good actor.

- Yeah, you make a great clown, you make people laugh.

It's okay to not be everything to everyone.

- Look man, I gotta jet, all right.

- Look, I'm not gonna tell you what you want to hear.

- That can go both ways.

- Yeah, and that's the problem.

- Are you gonna help me out or not?

- Because I love you, I'm not.

You're gonna regret this decision.

- I guess we'll find out.

- Yeah yeah.

Anyway, good luck bro.

I'll check up on your bitch.

But listen, I gotta cook.

Call me back later, okay?

- Dude, fuck off.

[gate clanking]

- [Clone] In you go, in you go.

Enjoy that sandwich.

- Creepy little bitch.

Hey, where'd you get that sandwich?

- Father Goose gave it to me.

- Father Goose?

- Yeah.

- Where'd you run to Father Goose?

- He gave me this sandwich 'cause I was hungry.

- Hungry?

Dude, I'm fucking starving, man.

You don't mind me getting

to chew off that sandwich or something, do you?

I could really eat something right about now, man.

- Here.

- This means a lot, man.

So what did he do to you?

'Cause I can't remember a fucking thing.

- I don't feel good at all.

- Don't feel good?

- I'm so hungry but my stomach hurts so bad.

- You know?

Can't be eating so damn much.

Pace yourself a little bit or something.

- I don't know what's wrong with me.

- You don't think he turned up the gas

or something in here, do something, do you?

- What?

- I think he turned on the gas or something

to fuck with us

and maybe disturb our appetite or something.

Dude, I can't fucking feel a thing right now.

I think it was a bad idea eating that damn sandwich.

Ah, fuck.

Dude, I think that was

something in that damn sandwich of his.

I don't feel right.

- I don't feel good at all, dude.
