Julia, let's start with you because this transformation, you are unrecognizable.
And I know it was a long process to get into this role. Can you walk me through
what went into this transformation, this process?
Just a lot of time in the hair and makeup trailer.
Yeah, it was kind of, it was crazy, but I knew that that's like what I wanted to
do and that's what I had to do in a way because I kind of, I didn't want to.
recognize myself in certain ways as much as possible, which is sometimes hard
because I still can see myself in certain ways.
But yeah, it was kind of, it was difficult. I have to say the most
difficult part was the acting with colored contacts was really, really
tough. Like even the prosthetic, I've worn prosthetics before, but it also
depends on what area on your face. Like if you wear prosthetics around your
eyes. That's not great. But if you wear a nose, it's not that big of a deal. But
contacts, it's tough.
It's kind of rough. Were you able to see on set? Or was it the blurred vision
thing? For the first two months, no.
So I would be like looking at Anthony or looking at another one, you know, the
actors or something. And then, like, I could physically, like, feel the
contacts move.
And so I would see half of it tinted. I was, like, wearing tinted glasses for,
like. a half a year or however long the ship was. Yeah, I think it was episode
one, halfway through, I said, can you see me right now? And Julie said, I can
see ships.
Her performance is even more impressive. And so I would rely on the shape of
what the expression was.
And I would just imagine.
But you know what? Sometimes in a weird way, it makes you get into a flow state
that you're like half dreaming, half awake or whatever.
I don't know.
I'm surprised that it worked,
I guess. I don't know.
Hey, I'm Sam.
Caroline. I'm gonna give you a brain teaser.
You'll know a better percentage of your chips.
So the game's about analyzing risk.
All in. You could lose everything.
Going all in every time is the mathematically optimal strategy.
What was your reaction the first time that you saw Julia in the full
transformation? Well, I didn't know it was her, because we had spent two weeks
rehearsing with each other, and obviously, Julia is very beautiful and
amazing. And then we're doing the screen test, and there's loads of people
around, and loads of people we haven't seen before.
And then this sort of person comes in, sort of twitching with this nose and
face and eyes.
And I'm like, who's that girl? And she's like, hey, hey, how are you? And I'm
like, hey, how are you doing? She goes, I'm Caroline.
And I was like, oh my God, that's Julia in character.
So I had to like snap into character. And I was like, hey, I'm Sam.
Then he started doing the voice. And then we were just like.
We were just like.
Like that for like.
the rest of the shoot. She was like, this is gonna be great. We were like, oh
my God, this is so amazing. I thought, oh God, I gotta lock in here. This is
great. I mean, let's talk about the voice too. I mean, Julia, you've become
known for your accent work from Ozark to inventing Anna to this.
I do not have time for this. I do not have time for you.
How do you nail these very different voices?
What goes into that process for you?
I think it's like a rhythm thing. I think so much, so much, you know,
people...
Whenever they do an accent, they just focus on the accent, but so much of
accents is also just cadence and the rhythm of how somebody speaks.
And I feel like that's what makes it more personal and that's what makes it
feel real isn't so much of the accent, it's more of...
the musicality and the cadence of how somebody speaks.
And I actually, like, didn't work with a dialect coach for this. I worked with a
vocal coach, like, for singing because I almost, like, I also didn't want
to, like, ruin my voice because you can ruin it with a vocal fry.
And I just didn't want to wreck my voice. And I also, I have a much higher
voice, so I wanted to go...
deeper, I guess. Yes, that was a different process. It was a different
process. Also, what is your reaction when you see your lines clipped out and
turned into TikTok trends?
If you want to stop me, you're going to have to kill me!
I don't have a TikTok.
Do people send you this? Yeah, they do, but I can't open anything.
I can't open one thing, so I don't know. I don't know how to react because I
haven't seen anything. The people are loving it.
That's her. That's the girl.
She's really cool.
I always said that I am going to make a difference.
I believe you.
What if we built our own cryptocurrency business?
We can call it FTX.
We are going to change the world. And this campus and these people are going
to help us do that.
You and I are side by side all the way.
You and Sam are the two smartest people I've ever met.
But sometimes I can't fathom how you can both be so stupid. Let's talk about
these characters. You're obviously playing real life people.
So did either of you speak to Sam or Caroline while you were prepping for
these roles?
Yeah, I had a few emails with Sam back and forth.
But in terms of journalistic integrity, I told him that I would never reveal
what we spoke about.
But he was very forthcoming and very helpful.
I asked him like 100 questions and responded to 98 of them.
I thought it was very telling, but truthfully, it didn't. Oh, now you know
I want to ask so bad. I know, right?
I know you can't, but I need to know. It's so annoying, but it's like skirts
on her, you know? Okay, okay, okay, okay. That's fair. The two questions,
interesting.
And then Julia, did you talk to Caroline?
No. Why not?
She didn't want to talk.
Which is also very telling.
Were you surprised by that?
No. It says a lot.
It says a lot because...
What Anthony's saying, it's very telling when somebody answers a bunch of
questions. They want to know how the TV show's being told.
They want to know that it's very telling for him of like how to approach his
character. And it's very telling for me how to approach my character. You know,
when I was doing Delvey, she wanted to know everything in a way, right? Almost
similar to like Sam.
But Caroline, it was like the opposite. And for me...
I think Caroline's more comfortable watching things rather than being
watched.
And I don't want to speak for Anthony, but I feel like it's like the opposite.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I'm curious how they'll respond to the series.
Yes, me too. Me too.
We're all doing a screening with them. Yeah. In jail.
I'm joking.
We talked about it. Thank you, please. You're going
to moderate it.
We're surprising you right now.
Yeah, this is great.
Exclusive.
Lying isn't bad for a good cause.
But what if the Wall Street Journal finds out what you're hiding?
You're the one who did it. There's no such thing as criminals.
It's just people who get caught.
Dude, you gotta promise me you won't say anything, okay?
Sam and Caroline stole $8 billion from customers. What?
We also have to talk about Hudson Williams' role in this. Yeah. Which we
loved. Had you guys seen Heated Rivalry before? Before you joined the cast?
No, because we were in the middle of... We were shooting.
No, we were in Vancouver.
When it came out?
It was like a month before it came out.
And...
I remember he was in the green room. This was like a month before it came
out. Maddie was watching it in the VR because they were having sleepovers.
They were all watching it, Maddie and Corinne. We had so much anxiety shooting
this show because the lines that we had to memorize were so tough. So every
single day it felt like a test.
I felt like I was in school.
And I was terrible at school, so it wasn't that fun for me.
Well, you said it was one of the most challenging roles you've ever done. Is
that a part of it? Yeah, for sure.
Also, it's just like, it's not an easy character with also the dialogue. I
mean, the dialogue that we had was so difficult. Yeah. It was challenging.
Yeah, it was pretty crazy. Like just these lines talking about arbitrages and
VCs and all this sort of venture capital.
We didn't know what we were talking about. I think we did when we said it
and then it just left our brains immediately. Did we?
No, but we're trying to do this for the journey. We're trying to appear smart to
you. Come on.
We knew exactly what we were talking about.
We're both lying right now. We didn't know what we were talking about at all.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're the good guys.
Remember?
I don't know who I can trust.
You trust me, right?
What do you want people to walk away after seeing this version of Sam and
Caroline? I can't actually like what I want.
is i want people to tell the person next to them or call someone and tell them
that they love them because it's to me that's what the show felt like like the
crypto thing came secondary for me like the the main thing about it in the
script and when we were playing it was like you should tell people that you
love that you love them I think that's what I would want people to take away. I
was going to say the same thing.
There you go. There you go.
What is it in the line? It's like the mind's melding. Yeah. There you go. This
is it.
