- [FO] Good luck on your landing there, Captain. (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [CAP] Hello?

- [FA Intercom] Were you looking for me?

- [CAP] Uh, yeah, we just got the message it's gonna be real bumpy on the way down to landing. - [FA Intercom] Okay.

- [CAP] So, you might wanna pack it all up or whatever as soon as we start down.

- [CAP] Matter of fact, we're about to begin our descent right now, so you can lock it all up and prepare for landing please.

- [ATC] American 1572, descend, pilot's discretion, maintain flight level one-niner-zero.

- [FA] OK, thank you. - [FO] Pilot's discretion to one-nine-o, American 1572. PD to one-nine-o boss.

- [CAP] Uh, yeah, let's go down.

- [FO] Out of three-five-o, flight level one-nine-o, American 1572.

- [CAP] Uh, you might wanna cool it down a bit too, it's gonna get bumpy or they'll be throwing up.

- [ATC] Bradley Airport Information Victor zero-three-five-one Zulu. Visibility, one-zero miles. Light rain. Wind, one-six-zero-two-eight.

(Sound of aircraft interior)

- [CAP] Uh, we've begun our descent. 100 miles from Bradley field right now. Should be touching down about 25 minutes or so.

- [CAP] And the latest temperature is 62 degrees, and they are calling it just a light rain.

- [CAP] However, the winds are pretty ah... The winds are pretty high. They are saying the winds are up to 30 miles an hour, so it might get a little choppy.

- [CAP] And, right now, they reported a moderate turbulence on the descent, so it might get a little choppy on the way down.

- [CAP] Okay, just watch me the whole way alright? - [FO] Yeah, man, you got it. - [CAP] Any comments, just scream out.

- [FO] You're gonna get a lot of turbulence. You know how to land it. - [CAP] Let's go to pumps on high.

- [FO] Tell ya, when I was an engineer, new at the airlines, I watched a guy. He's a... Nobody likes him.

- [FO] He's a seven-two captain. Forgot his damn name.

- [FO] All the Navy guys, man, they hate his guts.

- [FO] He's still on the seven-two. He thinks he's an instructor at the RAG.

- [FO] I watched this guy land in 30 knots of direct cross up at Bradley when I was a wrench...

- [FO] Scared the hell out of me. Actually scared me bad.

- [FO] Some of the flying we do up here is much harder--

- [CAP] Yeah, I agree, I agree.

- [FO] Just fighting it the whole way down.

- [CAP] Okay, one-five. And what gate are we going into?

- [FO] Gate eight.

- [CAP] Man, we're getting a lot of rain out there. I'll tell you this...

- [FO] Altimeters?

- [CAP]...flying at night, I don't like it worth a damn. Ah... 2950.

- [FO] Yeah, they called 2947 when we started down.

- [CAP] Okay

- [FO] Pumps are up. You want these lights?

- [CAP] I think we can leave them off for now.

- [CAP] Flight attendants, prepare for landing, please.

- [FO] Reset and cross-checked.

- [CAP] Okay, reset and cross-checked.

- [CAP] What's the overcast?

- [FO] Twenty-seven hundred.

- [FO] Shooting the damn VOR, man.

- [ATC] American 1572, fly heading ah... one-zero-zero.

- [FO] One-zero-zero, American 1572.

- [CAP] One-zero-zero, one-oh-nine, one-forty-eight.

- [CAP] I'll use ah... medium brakes.

- [FO] Can't see it yet.

- [CAP] (laughs)

- [CAP] Do we have any other choices?

- [FO] Well, you have runway one-five.

- [CAP] (laughs) You bet that's where we're going.

- [CAP] Okay, slats extend, please. (Sound effect of slats)

- [FO] Approaching 4,000.

- [ATC] American 1572, you're five miles from final.

- [ATC] Cross final at or above 3,500. Cleared for the VOR runway one-five approach.

- [FO] Okay, well ah, we're cleared for the approach,

- [FO] and we'll cross final at or above, ah, 3,500, American 1572.

- [CAP] Set. Coming down.

- [ATC] American 1572, roger, and um, be advised uh, the tower is closed at this time.

- [ATC] It's a temporary closure to do a problem with, ah, one of the windows, so I'll need a down time on you.

- [ATC] But, um, you can stay on this frequency, ah, for that.

- [FO] Roger, and, what happened on the window?

- [ATC] It's just loose, they got carpenters up there boarding it up.

- [FO] It blew out.

- [ATC] Once that's done, the tower should be open.

- [FO] Copy.

- [CAP] Flaps 11, please?

- [FO] You got it.

(Sound effect of flaps)

- [FO] Okay, 3,500, looking good.

- [FO] I think it'll be smoother once we get out of the weather.

- [CAP] Yep.

- [FO] Okay, you're at 3,500.

- [CAP] Okay. We're cleared down to where?

- [FO] You're clear down to 2,000.

- [CAP] Okay, 2,000 set, and armed.

- [FO] Five miles, so it's good. 2,000 is set, armed.

- [CAP] Flaps 15.

- [FO] Down to flaps 15.

(Sound effect of flaps)

- [CAP] Coming down.

- [FO] Ten miles.

- [CAP] And coming back to idle. - [FO] Roger.

- [ATC] American 1572, um, you show yourself on the final...

- [ATC] Looks like you're a bit to the left of it.

- [CAP] Yeah, it does look like we're coming to the left of it. - [FO] Copy.

- [ATC] American 1572, roger. Wind's now one-seven-zero at two-four. Gusts, three-five.

- [FO] Roger.

- [CAP] How about gear down, please?

(Sound effect of landing gear)

- [FO] Thousand and five.

- [ATC] American 1572, okay, there is someone in the tower.

- [ATC] It's not really officially open, but you can change to tower frequency one-two-zero point three.

- [FO] Okay, you won't need that down time.

- [ATC] Negative.

- [FO] See ya. - [ATC] Good day.

- [CAP] Okay, so it's 2,000 feet 'til five miles.

- [FO] That's it.

- [CAP] Coming back, flaps 28. (Sound effect of flaps)

- [FO] You're going down to nine-oh-eight, huh? (Sound effect of turbulent air)

- [CAP] Yep.

- [FO] Set and armed.

- [FO] The VOR is right on track. - [CAP] OK.

- [FO] Gear's down and green. Spoiler lever?

- [CAP] Armed.

- [FO] You got brakes are going to medium.

- [FO] Hey tower, American 1572, we're on a six mile final for runway one-five.

- [ATC] American 1572, this is Bradley Tower, Landing is at your discretion, sir.

- [ATC] Wind, one-seven-zero, at two-five, peak gusts to four-zero, and ah, the runway does appear clear.

- [ATC] You can land and taxi to the gate at your discretion. - [FO] Showing you going through the course.

- [FO] Are you ah... and ah... What are you showing right now for winds?

- [ATC] One-seven-zero, at two-four.

- [FO] Copy.

- [CAP] Flaps 40.

(Sound effect of flaps)

(Sound effect of turbulent air)

- [FO] Annunciator lights, checked. Flaps and slats at 40-40 and land.

- [FO] You are clear to land, dude.

- [CAP] Okay.

- [CAP] Give me a thousand down.

- [FO] Thousand down, you got it.

- [ATC] Wind shear alert, center field, one-seven-zero at two-five, the ah, Northeast boundary one-seven-zero at two-four.

- [ATC] One-niner-zero at 12 at the Southeast boundary.

- [FO] Copy.

- [FO] There's 1,000 feet, you've got 40-40 land, clear to land, now nine-o-eight is your, ah, bug.

- [Warning Sound Effect] Sink rate! Sink rate!

- [FO] You're going below your limit here. - [Warning Sound Effect] Sink rate! Sink rate!

- [Impact Sound Effect] - [FO] Go, go!

- [Impact Sound Effect] - [FO] Go around!

- [CAP] Going around, go 'round, go 'round! Flaps 15, positive rate, gear up.

- [FO] You want the gear up? - [CAP] Yep.

- [CAP] OK... OK. (Sound effect of landing gear)

- [Warning Sound Effect] Sink rate! Sink rate!

- [CAP] Oh, the left motor's failed! - [Warning Sound Effect] Sink rate! Sink rate!

- [FO] OK, showing the runway straight ahead! - [CAP] Tell 'em we're going down! Tell 'em emergency!

- [FO] Tower, call for emergency equipment, we have...

- [FO] We're going down on the runway! Do you want the gear back down?

- [CAP] Yeah, throw it down. OK. (Sound effect of landing gear)

- [FO] You're gonna make it. - [CAP] Oh God.

- [FO] Flaps! - [Warning Alarm Sounds]

- [CAP] Yeah, throw them down, what we got?

- [FO] Yeah, we're still flying.

- [CAP] Okay, god damn! - [FO] Keep going,

- [FO] You're gonna make it, keep coming...

- [FO] Call for emergency. Call for emergency equipment.

- [FO] You've got it, dude, you're gonna make it.

- [CAP] Okay, flaps? Flaps, 40, all the way. Flaps, 40, all the way, flaps 40!

- [FO] They are all the way.

- [CAP] Hang on guy... get it on...

- [CAP] On the deck.

- [Warning Sound Effect] (TERRAIN TERRAIN) - [Alarm Sound Effect continues]

- [CAP] Hold it down, hold it down, hold it down.

- [Alarm Sound Effect] (Sound effect of engines spooling down)

- [FO] God bless you.

- [FO] You made it.

- [CAP] Shut down the motors.

- [FO] Pull them both? - [CAP] Yeah.

- [CAP] Pull both fire handles.

(Sounds of slide projector cycling)

(Sound of propeller powered aircraft interior)

(Sound of propeller powered aircraft interior) (Sound of rock & roll radio playing)

- [FA] Wow, I see what's going on up here. (Sound of rock & roll radio playing)

- [FA] Is that like stereo? Radio? (Sound of rock & roll radio fades)

- [FA] You don't have a hard job at all.

- [FA] We're back there slugging with these people.

- [CAP] Yeah, you are.

- [CAP] We do have it pretty easy. I was telling Jeff I don't think I'd ever want to do anything else but this.

- [FO] Yeah, I like dealing people... in a way. It's kinda neat to be able to talk to them.

- [FA] I know.

- [FA] How late are we gonna be? - [CAP] Well...

- [FA] We already got two people that have already missed their flight.

- [CAP] Oh really? - [FA] 3:15 is one of them.

- [CAP] 3:15? - [FA] It's all your fault.

- [CAP] 3:15? - [FA] Uh-huh.

- [FA] We weren't due into Chicago until 3:15.

- [CAP] She is lying, then.

- [FA] You know what we deal with out there?

- [FO] 4:15.

- [CAP] Yeah, you should hit her.

- [FA] (laughs)

- [CAP] 3:15 Eastern time.

- [FA] What do you all do up here when... when auto-piloting?

- [FA] Just hang out?

- [FO] You still have to tell it what to do.

- [CAP] If the autopilot didn't work, he'd be one busy little bee right now.

- [FA] Oh, so, does the Fos do a lot more work than you do?

- [CAP] Yup.

- [FO] Not really. (Laughter)

- [CAP] Man, this thing gets a high deck angle in these turns.

- [FO] Yep.

- [CAP] We're Just wallowing the air right now.

- [FO] You want ah, flaps 15?

- [CAP] I'll get ready for that stall procedure here pretty soon.

(Laughter)

- [CAP] You want to kick 'em in? It'll bring the nose down. - [FO] Sure.

(Sound effect of flaps deploying)

- [FA] What were they ah... What were they telling me about? It was something about the rain?

- [FA] They always trick the hiring people, about rain, some little person that talks?

- [CAP] Rain?

- [FO] Ah, no, this one, maybe?

- [Warning Sound Effect] Glide slope! Glide slope!

- [FA] It sounds like it said something about the rain or...

- [CAP] That one?

- [Warning Sound Effect] Wind shear! Wind shear!

- [FA] Yeah, but there's something else.

- [FO] Nope. Like I said, it's a rain cloud... They say, "How'd you know?"

- [FO] 'Cause this thing tells us, it'll tell you, "To rain, to rain."

- [FA] Yeah, yeah, that's what it says, "To rain."

- [CAP] I think it's this thing here.

- [Warning Sound Effect] Too low terrain! Too low terrain!

(Laughter)

- [CAP] I don't know...

- [FA] See you all. - [CAP] All right.

- [FO] Well, we got, ah, 3,600 pounds of fuel.

- [CAP] Uh-huh.

- [FO] Ah. They sent a message, you get that dispatch?

- [FO] Must have got a message we're in a hold there.

- [CAP] Well, folks, once again, this is the captain. You're ah...

- [CAP] Do regret to inform that air traffic control has put us into holding pattern up here.

- [CAP] We're holding for approximately 20 minutes outside of Chicago at this time,

- [CAP] but I guess the congestion and traffic's continued on,

- [CAP] they um, they need us to hold out here for some spacing.

- [CAP] They're saying at this point, um... on the hour before we depart the hold,

- [CAP] although that may not hold, we may not be up here the full 13 minutes.

- [CAP] We'll be sure to keep you updated once we leave the hold, and we'll let you know more if they tell us the hold is gonna be longer

- [CAP] Do apologize for all these delays.

- [CAP] Chances are that are all the flights in and out of Chicago this afternoon would be delayed as well.

- [CAP] This is not just for aircraft in the air right now, but this is also for um...

- [CAP]...aircraft that were in the air earlier, aircraft on the ground, and aircraft that will be departing...

- [CAP] So ah, once again, chances are real good that your flight will be delayed as well...

- [CAP]...and you'll still have a real good chance of making your connection.

- [CAP] If not, they'll ah... automatically rebook you on the next flight in Chicago.

- [FO] Much nicer flaps 15.

- [CAP] Yeah.

- [FO] Yeah, I'm showing some ice now.

- [CAP] Good, I can't hold anymore, man.

- [CAP] That big cup needs out now.

- [FO] They're gonna be giving you some dirty looks, man.

- [CAP] Whoa ho, Oh, man. Oh, yeah, I know they are.

- [CAP] People do, it's either that, or pee on 'em.

(Laughter) (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FO] Yeah, I'll talk to her.

(Sound effect of intercom ding) - [CAP] What's up?

- [FA INT] It's just me. - [CAP] Huh?

- [FA INT] It was just me. - [CAP] Oh.

- [FA INT] I'm just wondering how much gas do we got?

- [CAP] How much gas we have? - [FA INT] Yeah.

- [CAP] Well, we've got more than plenty of gas, we can be up here for a long time.

- [FA INT] Cool, okay. Just was worried maybe you'd have to divert somewhere and really make these people...

- [FO] 60 miles from Chicago.

- [FA INT] Six? 60 miles?

- [CAP] Oh yeah. - [FO] Yep.

- [FA INT] Yeah, but they're still gonna hold us, huh?

- [CAP] 'Til about another 10 minutes.

- [FA INT] And that's not a for sure thing, is it?

- [CAP] Uh, yeah, it's pretty for sure as of right now. Unless they decide to make it different.

- [CAP] How's that for an answer?

- [FA INT] (laughing) - [FA INT] Same like the other one.

- [CAP] Yeah, I know. Talk to her, bro.

- [FO] Okay. - [FA INT] Bye.

- [FO] Uh, hey you there? (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FO] Hello?

- [FA INT] Are you sure you can handle it up there?

- [FO] I'll try.

- [FA INT] Hey, turn it down, it needs to be cooler back here, it's hot.

- [FO] Ahh, It's all the way down now.

- [FA INT] Okay, thanks.

- [FO] It's been down. - [FA INT] It's been down?

- [FO] Yeah, well, I'll chill up... up with two.

- [FA INT] Really... Well, we're sweating.

- [FA INT] (Breathes heavily)

- [FO] You know why?

- [FA INT] You wanna hear us breathe heavy? - [FA INT] (laughs)

- [FO] It's ah... One of the bleeds are off.

- [FA INT] OK. (laughing)

- [FO] Ahh... It's for the air conditioning. - [FA INT] Yeah.

- [FO] It's the one that gives you most of the air back there. - [FA INT] OK. (laughing)

- [FO] So, you've got less than half-- - [FA INT] Oh OK. Figures.

- [FO] Not only that, it's your half. I'll try to uh... - [FA INT] OK. OK.

- [FA INT] OK OK, well here... Orlando wants to talk to you.

- [FO] Orlando does? Hello!

- [CAP] (on cabin intercom) Hey, bro. - [FO] Yeah.

- [CAP] Getting busy with the ladies back here. (laughter)

- [FO] Okay.

- [CAP] Yeah, so if ah... if I'm not back up there within say the next 15 or 20 minutes... you know why.

- [FO] Okay. - [CAP] Okay.

- [FO] Ah... I'll uh, Well, when we get close to touchdown, I'll give you a ring.

- [CAP] There you go.

- [CAP] Nah, I'll be up there right now.

(Sound of aircraft interior)

- [CAP] We have a brand new hombre.

- [FO] We still got ice.

- [CAP] Get any more messages from the cabbage patch?

- [CAP] Here. - [FO] Get a message?

- [CAP] You did.

- [CAP] I'll be right back, I'm gonna talk to the company.

- [ATC] Eagle flight 184, descend... Descend, and maintain 8,000.

- [CAP] Chicago do you copy? 4184.

- [OPS] 4184, go ahead.

- [CAP] Yeah, we already been talking to dispatch over the, ah, ACARS, so they're already aware of our delay.

- [CAP] I don't know if you guys got the word on that.

- [CAP] We're on a hold. We have three... 3,200, 3,300 pounds of fuel.

- [CAP] They're saying, ah, zero-zero for EFC so in about the next four or five minutes we should find out what the new word is.

- [CAP] But ah, what can you tell me about... there's this guy here worried about his Frankfurt connection.

- [CAP] You guys know anything about that?

- [ATC] Eagle flight 184, descend and maintain 8,000.

- [FO] Down to 8,000, Eagle flight 184.

- [ATC] Eagle flight 184, ah, should be about 10 minutes ah, 'til you're cleared in.

- [OPS] Ah, I can double check on that, yeah, just sent a message to dispatch, see if you were in a hold.

- [OPS] Copy 30 on the fuel, and an estimated out time on the hour...

- [OPS]...and did you have that Frankfurt flight number by any chance?

- [FO] They said 10 more minutes.

- [CAP] Uh, no, I sure don't. But I brought up connecting gates over the ACARS and it says it's going out of K5, if that helps you at all.

- [OPS] Let me check.

- [CAP] We out of the hold?

- [FO] Uh, no. Just ah, going down to 8,000.

- [FO] Ah... 10 more minutes, they said?

(Overspeed Alarm) - [FO] Oops!

- [CAP] I knew we were gonna do that. - [FO] I was trying to keep it at 180.

- [CAP] Okay.

- [FO] Shit! - [CAP] Okay, all right.

(Overspeed Alarm) (Pitch Trim Alarm)

- [FO] Shit! - [CAP] Mellow it out.

- [FO] OK! - (Alarm Sounds)

- [CAP] Autopilot's disengaged. - [FO] OK!

(Whoop! Whoop! Pull Up! Alarm) - (Co-Pilot) Okay!

- [FO] Shit!

(Whoop! Whoop! Pull Up! Alarm)

(Sound of impact)

(Sounds of slide projector cycling)

(Sound effect of jet engines spooling up)

- [FO] Lima tower, Aeroperu 603, Runway 15, ready for takeoff.

- [TOW] Aeroperu 603, use noise attenuation. Wind calm, you're authorized to take off runway 15.

- [CAP] One-five, one-five, transponder.

- [FO] Flaps, one-five. Takeoff briefing complete, time check.

- [CAP] Let's go. Power set. (Sound of engines spooling up)

- [FO] Power set. (Sound of max thrust, airplane movement)

(Sound of engines roaring)

- [CAP] 80 knots.

- [FO] Checked.

- [CAP] V1.

- [CAP] Rotate.

- [CAP] V2, positive.

- [FO] Gear up. (Sound effect of landing gear)

- [CAP] Right, V2 plus 10.

(Windshear Alarm Sound)

- [FO] The altimeters are stuck.

(Windshear Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Hey, the altimeters are stuck.

- [CAP] Yup.

- [FO] All of them?

- [CAP] Well, this is really new, keep V2 plus 10, V2 plus 10.

(Windshear Alarm Sound Continues)

- [FO] The speed...

- [CAP] Huh?

- [FO] The speed!

- [CAP] Yeah, right, V2 plus 10.

- [CAP] What happened? We're not climbing.

- [FO] I'm climbing, but the speed.

- [CAP] Hold it... no, keep the speed positive. Put 10 degrees.

- [CAP] Eh, no. We're descending?

- [FO] Rudder ratio.

- [CAP] How strange.

(Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Turn to the right. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Well... Go up, go up! Go up! Go up! (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] You're going down!

- [FO] I am up, but the speed.

- [CAP] Yeah, but it's stuck.

- [CAP] Ah... Mach trim, rudder ratio. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Now you are... Go up, go up, go up! Heading 100! (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah, it's okay, this course. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] Put the-- Climb thrust, is the center auto-pilot in command? (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Uh, I don't think so, let me see. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] No, no, the speed is better now. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Yeah, shit. Ah... Rudder ratio? (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] Yeah, let's see. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] I have source selector. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Rudder ratio... (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] Mach trim... mach trim... (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Speed. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah... Let's go to basic instruments. Everything's gone shit! (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] Tower, Aeroperu 603. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah... We're in emergency. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [TOW] Aeroperu 603, tower, go on.

- [FO] Okay, we declare emergency. We have no basic instruments. (Rudder Ratio Alarm)

- [FO] We have no altimeter, no airspeed indicator. We declare an emergency.

- [TOW] Roger, altitude?

- [FO] We don't have-- We have until 1 000 feet, approximately 1700.

- [TOW] 1,000 feet. Roger, roger, Aeroperu 603. Confirm if you can change frequency--

- [TOW] --to one-one-nine point seven to receive instructions from radar control.

- [FO] We go to one-one-nine point seven.

(Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] The auto-throttle is disconnected. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [FO] The auto-throttle has disconnected. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

(Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] Let's see... (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

(Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah-- What reads there? (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah-- What reads there? (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm Stops)

- [FO] Auto-throttle disconnect, rudder ratio, mach speed indicator.

- [CAP] Okay.

- [FO] 500 feet, it's grabbing now. - These assholes from maintenance move everything.

- [CAP] What shit have they done?

- [FO] Auto-throttle, rudder ratio, mach speed trim.

- [FO] Let's see if you have us on the radar, tower, 603.

- [CAP] I have the command-- don't... - [ATC] Aeroperu 603, Lima.

- [CAP] Auto... Autopilots have been connected?

- [FO] No, no, they are disconnected.

- [CAP] Are-- are they on?

- [FO] Yes, but they are off, only flight director is on.

- [FO] Lima, Aeroperu 603.

- [FO] We request vectors for ILS runway 15. - [CAP] It's maintaining 5 degrees.

- [ATC] Correct, we suggest a right turn, heading three-three-zero.

- [FO] Turning right, course three-three-zero.

- [ATC] Affirmative, and keep present altitude.

- [CAP] Altitude, we can't-- Ah, we're going up.

- [FO] What level do we have? Do we have 4,000 feet? Let's see if you confirm us?

- [ATC] Correct, keeping 4,000.

- [FO] We are keeping 4,000?

- [ATC] Affirmative.

- [CAP] Attitude, just attitude... rudder ratio...

- [CAP] Auto-throttle disconnect? (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [FO] Really, we don't have any control. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] We don't have controls, not even the basics. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah-- Let's see, ah-- check everything. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm stops)

- [FO] 4,000 feet. - [CAP] Yeah, never mind, we keep going up..

- [CAP] We're flying without speed.

- [CAP] It can't be.

- [CAP] Let's see. Respond.

- [FO] Speed is zero, all speeds.

- [FO] The speed, please, if you have us on the radar?

- [ATC] Aeroperu 603, you are 40 miles from Lima, and according with information on screen, at level one-two-zero.

- [ATC] Approximate speed over the ground is 310 knots.

- [FO] Roger, we have 230, and are turning to course 330.

- [ATC] Okay, Roger.

- [FO] Rudder ratio follows... mach speed trim.

- [CAP] Okay, let's see... Ahh... Read all that.

- [CAP] Auto-throttle is connect.

- [CAP] Command one-two-zero feet here, correct?

- [FO] 12,000 feet.

- [FO] Ah... auto-flight, now what?

- [FO] Auto-throttle, rudder ratio, I read it already...

- [FO] Mach speed trim.

- [FO] Mach speed...

- [FO] Is in navigation.

- [FO] Flight instruments?

- [FO] Flight instruments.

- [FO] Auto-flight?

- [FO] Auto-flight.

- [FO] Altitude alert, autopilot disconnect, rudder ratio. OK.

(Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Shit! We're going down now. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Shit! This auto-throttle, the autopilot-- Fuck! Off! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Speed. Altitude alert. Autopilot disconnect. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] 330-- (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [FO] Autopilot inoperative, flight instrument switch, mach speed. I don't find that mach speed trim.

- [FO] Speed, we have speed problems. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Instruments source selector, flight director. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] It can't be. Eh-- the speed. The power we have, it can't be. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] It can't be. It's true, it's wrong! 330! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Yes, but, they're even, aren't they? (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] - Okay, set yours on alternate air data. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Ah... the one down there. The lower button. The lower one. The lower one! That one down there!

- [FO] Shit! Worse! Your altimeter goes to shit! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Basic instruments, let's go to basic instruments. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] The air data's gone to shit there! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] I'll fill here departure and arrival, ILS runway 15... insert.

(Alert Alarm Sound stops)

- [CAP] Okay-- Ah... yours is screwed up, the air data.

- [FO] Two-four-eight, two-four-eight, nineteen seven.

- [CAP] We are with three-three-zero. - [FO] We're 330.

- [ATC] Aeroperu 603, you are at 40 miles, correct? Flying parallel course 3-3-0?

- [ATC] You are flying left course about to intersect west of Lima?

- [FO] Correct, we request vectors from this moment on.

- [ATC] Roger, we suggest course three-six-zero. - [CAP] We're going to stabilize...

- [FO] Three-six-zero.

- [ATC] The Lima VOR... do you receive it OK? - [CAP] We don't have auto-throttle either.

- [FO] Affirmative.

- [FO] Okay, I understand for three-one-five. - [CAP] Is this going up?

- [FO] Turn right to intercept localizer.

- [FO] Ah... we still don't have--

[CAP] Hey! You know its... (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] It's falling! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Shit! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Speed is going up too much! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Apparently it doesn't disconnect the auto. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Autopilot disconnected. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [FO] Better if we control it on basics, isn't it? (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [CAP] Ah-- Let's see the trim. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm)

- [ATC] According to presentation, you are crossing radial two-three-zero from Lima.

- [ATC] Distance west-southwest is 37 miles. (Autopilot Disconnect Alarm stops)

- [FO] Correct, we will... We have problems here for reading instruments.

- [FO] You will have to help us with altitude and speed, if possible.

- [ATC] Okay, roger.

- [FO] Until we reach the localizer beam, and we will navigate some 30 miles north...

- [FO]...of the localizer of Lima VOR to center in the ILS.

- [CAP] It doesn't have ALT hold.

- [CAP] Ahh-- Set the approach, please?

- [FO] I did it, I did it.

- [CAP] Then let's go.

- [FO] Okay, the approach.

- [FO] Set in small only. Speed, this is the shit that's gonna fuck us.

- [CAP] Let's see. We'll try to go down with everything...

- [CAP]...cut.

- [FO] Speed is going up.

- [CAP] Let's go down to 10,000 feet.

- [CAP] Why does the speed get so high? Is it the real speed?

- [FO] That's what worries me. No, I don't think so.

- [CAP] It can't be. Eh-- Rudder ratio, mach trim.

- [CAP] Eh-- Then, if there's not... mach speed trim?

- [FO] No, there's no mach speed trim, I don't find.

- [FO] Let's see, keep flying, and it will--

- [FO] Can you tell us the speed, please?

- [ATC] It indicates three-two-zero.

- [FO] Correct, we have all engines cut, and it's accelerating. Accelerating.

- [FO] Take the speed brake out.

- [CAP] No, no.

- [CAP] Okay, ah maybe.

- [FO] Speed is okay. All three indicators are okay on speed.

- [FO] Fast... fast... All engine instruments are okay.

- [FO] All engine instruments are okay.

- [FO] Shit!

- [CAP] What would be the real speed?

- [FO] This one is okay, they are okay, the speed, airspeed.

- [CAP] But-- with all the power cut down, it can't be, with all cut down.

- [CAP] There's a problem with the source instrument. Ah... Let's see.

- [CAP] How many miles? At 30 miles from Lima, we start descending with spoilers and flight level change.

- [ATC] You are crossing the two-six-zero of Lima at 31 miles west. Flight level is 100, plus 700...

- [ATC]...and approximate speed is two-eight-zero over the ground.

- [FO] Yeah, but we have an indication of 350 knots here.

- [CAP] Let's put... Why are these more clear?

- [CAP] Overspeed? Fucking shit! (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] I have speed brakes! Everything is gone. All the instruments went to shit. Everything is gone, all of them.

(Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] You're going down! I don't think so. (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] It can't be overspeed. We're flying... (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Is there any possibilities of... We still have overspeed. (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] With the spoilers all the-- (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] Correct rescue has been warned. (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] We request, any airplane that can take off to rescue us? - [CAP] Wait, no, no, no, no, no, no!

- [ATC] Yes, correct, we are going to coordinate immediately. It is being coordinated immediately.

- [FO] Any plane that can guide us? An Aeroperu that may be around, somebody?

- [CAP] Don't tell him anything about that. (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Yes, because right now we are stalling. (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] We're not stalling! It's fictitious! It's fictitious! (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] No, but with shaker? How would it be not? (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Shaker? But it is--- Even with speed brakes on, we're maintaining nine-five-zero feet!

- [CAP] Why don't we read the same? I don't understand! (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Power? What power do we have? (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

- [FO] It's coming back. My air speed indicator's coming back. (Stick Shaker Sound) (Overspeed Alarm Sound)

(Alarm Sound Effects Stop)

- [CAP] No. It's gone to off. - [FO] It's gone to off.

- [ATC] Aeroperu 603, you've turned slightly to the left.

- [ATC] Now you're heading three-two-zero, and your level is 10,000 feet.

- [ATC] Approximate speed of 220 knots and the distance of 32 miles northwest of Lima.

(Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] You're going down. (Alert Alarm Sound)

(Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] One-zero-zero to runway. Look, let's program, I think. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Ahh... We have a problem here. Overspeed. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] It doesn't cut the overspeed. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Where is the overspeed? Where is the overspeed warning? (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Shit! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Nine-- thousand feet. It indicates-- It's fictitious. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Everything is fictitious. All the pitot is gone. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] All the air data has gone to shit! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] Aeroperu 603, your base is asking if you have... (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC]...both computer systems out of service? (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] We have... No instrument is working as air speed indicator. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] We have overspeed alarm, and no, apparently it is not. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Having overspeed, shaker. The fast forward is indicating to high speed.

- [FO] We have engines cut down, and doesn't decelerate apparently.

- [CAP] Apparently. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Let's see, accelerate one engine. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] No, it ejects back. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] Yeah, because the auto-throttle's on. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Auto-throttle off, let's see, accelerate. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] The 707 will be ready some 15 minutes to fly west in your help.

-[CAP] What happened? (Too low terrain! Too low terrain! Alarm Sound)

-[FO] Too low terrain! (Too low terrain! Too low terrain! Alarm Sound)

- [FO] We have terrain alarm! (Too low terrain! Too low terrain! Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] Roger, according to monitor, indicates level one-zero-zero over the sea.

- [ATC] Heading Northwest course three-three-zero. (Too low terrain! Too low terrain! Alarm Sound)

- [FO] We have terrain alarm, and we're supposed to be at 10,000 feet?

- [CAP] Shit! We have everything. - [ATC] According to monitor you have one-zero-five.

(Too low terrain! Too low terrain! Alarm Sound)

- [FO] We have all computers crazy here! (Windshear! Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] What the hell these assholes have done. (Too low terrain! Windshear! Alarm Sounds)

- [ATC] Aeroperu 603, it shows you are turning left, aiming to the west.

(Alarm Sounds Stop)

- [FO] I don't understand.

- [ATC] It shows you're turning left. You're aiming to the west.

- [FO] Affirmative, we are heading two-five-zero, but we're going over the sea because we have a low terrain alarm. - [CAP] We're going to the sea.

- [ATC] Yes, affirmative, it shows you are 42 miles, flying with course west, course two-five-zero, heading west.

- [FO] We are over water, aren't we?

- [ATC] Affirmative, over the water. You are 42 miles west.

- [CAP] Are we going down now?

- [FO] We have like three-seven-zero knots, are we descending now?

- [ATC] It shows the same speed, you have two-zero-zero, speed approximately.

- [FO] Two hundred of speed? - [ATC] Two twenty of speed over the ground reducing speed slightly.

- [CAP] Shit! We will stall now! - [FO] Let's see! Let's go up here! (Stick Shaker Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] We will stall now! Yes! Yes I am. (Stick Shaker Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Overspeed, this shit! (Stick Shaker and Overspeed Alarm Sounds)

- Overspeed! But it is-- Alt alert, mach, now we must-- (Stick Shaker and Overspeed Alarm Sounds)

- [FO] Overspeed! Fuck! Go higher! (Stick Shaker and Overspeed Alarm Sounds)

- [CAP] Sons of a bitch! (Stick Shaker and Overspeed Alarm Sounds)

- [FO] Your speaker! (Stick Shaker and Overspeed Alarm Sounds)

- [FO] Your speaker! (Alarm Sounds Stop)

- [FO] Overspeed again. I don't have overspeed. I don't have overspeed.

- [FO] Auto-throttle, cabin altitude inoperative.

- [ATC] Aeroperu 603, you are at 50 miles from Lima, flying west course two-seven-zero, with level one-zero.

- [CAP] Okay, let's go back. Let's set course hundred. Hundred.

- [FO] Ah-- Do you have speed?

- [ATC] Yes, it shows a speed of approximate 300 knots.

- [FO] What about some plane that can give us altitude and speed indication?

- [ATC] Correct, a Boeing 707 has been coordinated. It will be ready in some 15 minutes, the tower informed seven minutes ago.

- [FO] Autopilot. Overspeed. I don't find overspeed.

- [CAP] How do we know the speed we have?

- [FO] Fast... Fast...

- [FO] Horizons are okay. Horizons are right. It's the only thing that's right.

- [CAP] Flight level change.

- [FO] APU, engines...

- [FO] Try to intercept the ILS. I am trying to go down.

- [FO] Lima, Aeroperu 603, we will try to intercept the ILS.

Let's see if you tell us if we're-- (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] Roger Aeroperu 603, you show now level nine-700. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] That is right. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] Stand by to verify speed. (Alert Alarm Sound)

(Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] The 707 is about to take off, it's starting to move. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [CAP] This is-- Fuck off! (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Verify the speed, it is very important. We don't have speed on board. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [ATC] Correct, you are starting turn, and it shows a velocity of 270 ground speed.

- [FO] Not so much. There it is, Eric, 270 is fine. (Alert Alarm Sound)

- [FO] Yes. Turn zero-70. We will keep zero-seven-zero,

- [FO] We keep course, it seems we have the right course.

- [FO] What we don't have is airspeed indicator and altitude nine-700.

- [CAP] Flight level change.

- [ATC] Correct, altitude is nine-700, and the speed is 240 knots over the ground according to monitor.

- [ATC] And at 51 miles from Lima.

- [CAP] You have? - [FO] I have.

- [CAP] What is this? (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FE] How about oxygen pressure? (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FE] Have they dropped? Ah, Is that so? Well, oxygen pressure...

- [FE] Well, then-- Put O2 bottle on firmly since oxygen masks have dropped.

- [ATC] Japan Air 123, ah... can you descend?

- [CAP] Roger, now descending.

- [FE] Oxygen masks dropped. - [ATC] Say altitude now?

- [CAP] Ah, Two-four-zero?

- [ATC] Right, your position seven-two miles to Nagoya. Yeah can you land at Nagoya?

- [CAP] Negative, request back to Haneda.

- [ATC] Alright, ah, you can speak in Japanese from now on.

- [CAP] Yes. Yes. Oh. Oh. - [FO] Where?

- [FE] Yes, what is it? (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FE] At the back? - [CAP] Will you hold? - [FE] Well, what was damaged, where is it?

- [FE] Of the coat room? More aft? You mean, the most aft? Understood.

- [FE] Well, I hear that at the most aft, the storage space has dropped.

- [FE] I think we'd better descend, all people have masks already.

- [FO] Should we descend a little bit? (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FE] Have you checked oxygen masks thoroughly?

- [FE] R-5's? Not yet. Yes, understood. Yes, understood. Yes, understood!

- [FE] Captain. - [CAP] Yes?

- [FE] Well. Yes. Now R-5's door is broken, and well, ah, we're descending.

- [JAL] Understood. So the captain intends to return to Tokyo? (Sound effect of intercom ding)

- [FE] Yes. Pardon me?

- [JAL] Do you return to Haneda?

- [FE] Well, since we are now making an emergency descent, we will contact the company soon.

- [FE] Again, we will contact again soon. So please keep monitoring us.

- [JAL] Understood.

[JAL] Six zero miles north west of Haneda. (Sound effect of terrain impact continues)

(Sound of impact) [JAL] North west ah-- five miles.

- [JAL] Five-zero nautical miles northwest of Haneda.

(Sounds of slide projector cycling)

- [ATC] Sioux City, got an emergency for you.

- [ATC] Got a United aircraft coming in, lost number two engine.

- [ATC] Having a hard time controlling the aircraft right now.

- [ATC] He's out of 29,000 right now. Descending to Sioux City right now.

- [ATC] He's east of your VOR, but he wants the equipment standing by right now.

- [ATC] Radar contact.

- [CAP] Okay, so you know we have no controllability at all.

- [CAP] Ah, we're controlling the turns by power.

- [CAP I don't think we can turn right. I think we can only make left turns.

- [CAP] Ah, we're starting a little bit of a left turn right now.

- [CAP] Eh-- Ah, maybe we can only turn right, we can't turn left.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, I understand you can only make right turns?

- [CAP] That's affirmative.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger, your present track puts you about eight miles north of the airport, sir,

- [ATC]...and, uh, the only way we can get you around runway three-one...

- [ATC]...is a slight left turn with differential power, or if you go and jockey it over.

- [CAP] Roger.

- [CAP] Okay, we're in a right turn now. It's about the only way we can go.

- [CAP] We'll be able to make very slight turns on final, but right now, just...

- [CAP] Ah-- We're gonna make right turns to whatever heading you want.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger, a right turn heading two-five-five.

- [CAP] Two-five. Now the goddamn elevator doesn't wanna work. Rolling right.

- [FE] This is United 232. We blew engine number two, and we've lost all hydraulics...

- [FE]...and we are only able to control, uh, level flight with asymmetrical power settings.

- [FE] We have very little rudder or elevator.

- [FO] Very little elevator. It's hard, or sluggish.

- [FO] Al, do you want me to slew this elevator? Feel it.

- [CAP] Yeah. Whatever you can do.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, fly heading 240... - [FO] Oh. Now the nose is coming up.

- [ATC]...and say your souls on board. - [CAP] Say again.

- [ATC] Souls on board? - [SAM] We understand you've lost engine number 2...

- [FE] That's affirmative. - [CAP] Getting that right now.

- [SAM] Your system one and system three? Are they operating normally?

- [FE] Negative, all hydraulic systems are lost. The only thing we have is auxiliary power units...

- [FE]...engines number one and three, electrical, fuel pumps--

- [ATC] United 232 continue your turn to heading two-four-zero.

- [FO] I don't know, we'll try for it.

- [SAM] Okay, United 232, I understand you have normal power on one and three engines?

- [FE] That's affirmative.

- [FO] I wonder about the outboard ailerons. If we put some flaps, you think that'll give us outboard?

- [FE] God, I'd hate to do anything.

- [CAP] Well, we're gonna have to do something.

- [SAM] United 232, is all hydraulic quantity gone? - [FO] Level off.

- [FE] Yes, all hydraulic quantity is gone.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, souls on board, and fuel remaining?

- [FO] Souls on board ah-- fuel remaining. We have 37-six on fuel.

- [FE] We have 37-four on fuel. (knocking sound on flight deck door)

- [CAP] Unlock the door.

- [ATC] Roger.

- [SAM] Okay, United 232, where are you gonna set down?

- [CAP] Thanks for coming up Captain. My name's Al Haynes.

- [DF] Hey Al, my name's Denny Fitch.

- [CAP] How do you do, Denny?

- [DF] I'll tell you what, we'll have a beer when all this is done.

- [CAP] Well, I don't drink, but I'll sure as hell have one. Little right turns. Little right turns.

- [DF] Lost the engine, huh? - [CAP] Yup.

- [CAP] Well, it blew. Couldn't do anything about it, we shut it down. - [DF] Yeah.

- [CAP] What's SAM saying?

- [FE] We need some assistance right now-- - [CAP] We don't have any controls. - [DF] Yeah.

- [FE] We're having a hard time controlling it.

- [FO] You wanna go forward on it Al? - [CAP] Now go forward. Now let it come back.

- [CAP] Gotta lead, gotta lead it.

- [CAP] Ah-- Let's see what you can see back there, will ya?

- [FO] Go back, look out on the wing, and see what we got. - [DF] Okay.

- [CAP] Back on the sucker.

- [FO] Don't pull the throttles off. What's the hydraulic quantity?

- [FE] Down to zero.

- [FO] On all of them?

- [FE] On all of them.

- [CAP] Quantity-- Quantity's gone. - [FE] Yeah, all the quantity is gone, all the pressure's gone.

- [CAP] You get a hold of SAM?

- [FE] Yeah, I talked to him. - [CAP] What's he saying?

- [FE] He's not telling me anything.

- [CAP] We're not gonna make the runway, folks. We're gonna have to ditch this son of a bitch and hope for the best.

- [CAP] Unlock the damn door. - [FO] Unlock it. (knocking sound on flight deck door)

- [CAP] We've lost-no hydraulics. We have no hydraulic fluid, that's part of our main problem.

- [ATC] United 232, do you want to put the thing on the ground right now, or do you wanna come up to Chicago?

- [FE] Okay, we're ah- We don't know what we'll be able to do.

- [FE] We don't think we're even gonna be able to get on the runway right now.

- [FE] We have no control hardly at all.

- [DF] Okay, both your inboard ailerons are sticking up, that's as far as I can tell. I don't know.

- [CAP] That's because we're steering. We're turning maximum turn right now.

- [DF] You can tell me. Yell what you want, I'll help ya.

- [CAP] Right throttle. Close one, and put two up.

- [CAP] What we need is elevator control, and I don't know how to get it.

- [CAP] The only help you could get here is the autopilot and I tried that, it won't work. - [DF] It won't work, OK.

- [FE] Roger, we need any help we can get from SAM as far as what we can do with this. - [CAP] Go ahead and try it again. Pull back, pull back, pull back...

- [FE] We don't have anything. We don't know what to do. - [CAP] You want full aileron and full elevator. No, no... Not yet. Wait a minute.

- [FE] We're having a hard time controlling it. - [CAP] Wait till it levels off.

- [FE] We're descending, we're down to 17,000 feet. - [CAP] Now go...

- [FE] We have hardly any control at all whatsoever.

- [Sioux City Approach] Okay, copy that, 232. San Fran is on the line. Give them em all the help you can... - [CAP] How're they doing on evacuation preparations?

- [Sioux City Approach]...and we'll get you expedited handling into Chicago and put you on the ground as soon as we can. - [DF] They're putting things away. They're not in any big hurry.

- [FE] But we can't make it into Chicago. We're gonna have to land out, somewhere out here, probably in a field. - [CAP] Well they better hurry.

- [CAP] We're going to have to ditch I think.

- [SAM] United 232, we understand you have to land at the nearest airport. The nearest airport?

- [CAP] Okay, I don't think we're gonna make the airport. - [SAM] Ah, I'm trying to find out...

- [FO] No, we have no hydraulics at all. - [DF] Get this thing down we're in trouble. - [SAM]...where you lost all 3 hydraulic systems?

- [FE] That is affirmative, we have lost all three hydraulic systems. We have no quantity and no pressure on any hydraulic system.

- [CAP] Sir, we have no hydraulic fluid, which means we have no elevator control, almost none, and very little aileron control.

- [CAP] I have serious doubts about making the airport. Have you got some place near there we might be able to ditch?

- [CAP] Unless we get control of this airplane, we're gonna put it down wherever it happens to be.

- [SAM] United 232, you have lost all manual flight control systems?

- [CAP] Put some flaps, see if that will help. - [FO] You want them flaps now?

- [CAP] What the hell, let's do it. Can't get any worse than we are.

- [FO] Slats are out? - [DF] No, you don't have any slats. - [CAP] Don't have any hydraulics, we're not gonna get anything.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, can you hold that present heading, sir?

- [CAP] This is Sioux City, Iowa, that's where we're headed.

- [CAP] Where is the airport for 232? We're turning around in circles.

- [DF] Get on number one ask 'em where the hell we are.

- [CAP] Where is the airport to us now as we come spinning down here?

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, Sioux City Airport's about 12 o'clock, and three-six miles.

- [CAP] Okay, ah, we're trying to go straight. We're not having much luck.

- [DF] Okay, I got you on 700 on the squawk so they can track you. - [FO] He's got us on radar.

- [CAP] As soon as the nose starts up we have to push forward on the yoke.

- [DF] Nothing on number two, number two?

- [CAP] No, no, we got it shut down.

- [SAM] United 232, I'm getting in contact with flight ops right now, stand by please.

- [CAP] I want a heading of about three-zero-zero. We kinda got level light back.

- [DF] Okay, if you get denser air, you should get level flight back again. Whatever you got, you got.

- [CAP] That's a little better. - [DF] Okay, let me see.

- [CAP] Didn't do this thing on my last simulator check. - [FO] No.

- [CAP] Ahh, I poured coffee over... it's just coffee. We'll get this thing on the ground. Don't worry about it.

- [FO] It seems controllable, doesn't it, Al?

- [DF] Yeah. The lower we get, the denser that air, the better your shots, Okay?

- [CAP] I'll tell ya what we need. We're putting this thing into Sioux City. Get me-

- [CAP] Sioux City, United Two Thirty Two, could you give us please your ILS frequency, the heading, and the length of the runway?

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, affirmative. The localizer frequency is one-zero-nine point three, and you're currently about 35 miles to the northeast.

- [ATC] It'll take about a two... two-three-five, two-four-zero heading to join it.

- [SAM] United 232, this is SAM.

- [FE] SAM... Two Thirty-Two, we're gonna try and put into Sioux City.

- [ATC] United 232, understand you're gonna try to make it into Sioux City. That's the only airport out that way that can accommodate you sir.

- [CAP] Okay, we'll head for Sioux City. Ah, got a little bit of control back now. How long is your runway?

- [ATC] Two Thirty-Two Heavy, the airport, the runway is 9000 feet long.

- [FE] Two Thirty-Two is very busy right now. We're tryin' to put into Sioux City. We'll call you as soon as I can...

- [CAP] You're a little more-- Let's see if you can make a left turn. - [DF] Left turn. All right. Ahh...

- [DF] Your speed is, what?

- [DF] I'm worried about it... I don't wanna stall you.

- [FE] You want a no-flap, no-slat landing, right? - [CAP] Yup.

- [CAP] Ah, start dumpin' fuel, will ya? Just hit the quick dump. Let's get the weight down as low as we can.

- [FE] I didn't have time to think about that.

- [CAP] Try not to lose any more than we have to.

- [FE] What-- altitude?

- [CAP] Yeah.

- [FO] Okay.

-[FO] Go ahead and dump. (Sound effect of fuel hissing out)

- [DF] He's got his weight. He's got his weight. He's got about a thousand pounds of fuel to go. - [FO] OK.

- [DF] Ahh-This thing seems to want to go right more than it wants to go left, doesn't it?

- [ATC] United Two Thirty-Two, did you get the souls on board count?

- [CAP] Ah-- What do you have for a count for people?

- [CAP] Let me tell you right now, we don't even have time to call the gals.

- [FE] Two-ninety-two. - [CAP] Ease all the power back.

- [DF] OK. Now the nose is is coming up. - [FO] Yeah, we're going up. - [CAP] - I know it, I'm pushing with all I got.

- [DF] Power is coming back... power is coming back.

- [CAP] As soon as it starts to come back.

- [DF] Power's coming back in. - [CAP] OK, come back.

- [CAP] Bring it to the right with the right one.

- [CAP] Ah-you got to go left.

- [CAP] We just keep turning right... still turning right.

- [DF] That's what I'm trying to do.

- [CAP] 232, we're just gonna have to keep turning right, there's not much we can do about turning left.

- [CAP] Ah... We'll try to come back around to the heading.

- [FO] Is this Sioux City down to the right? - [CAP] That's Sioux City.

- [ATC] United 232, roger. We need you on about a two-three-five heading, sir, if you can manage that and hold that.

- [CAP] We'll see what happens.

- [DF] Going down now. I'm going to put a little more power on...

- [DF] I'm going to try and set you about 90%, see if it holds up good for ya.

- [DF] Trying to find the right power setting so you don't have to fight this pitch.

- [FO] Ease it to the right. - [CAP] You ever get a hold of SAM?

- [FE] Yep, didn't get any help.

- [CAP] Well, did you tell him to advise dispatch of our situation and what we're doing?

- [FE] Yes, he knows.

- [CAP] No more right turns, no more!

- [CAP] I mean, ah-we want to turn right. He wants us to go right.

- [DF] You do wanna turn, all right.

- [FO] Approach, where is Sioux City from our present position, United 232?

- [ATC] United 232, it's about 20 degrees on the heading, and thirty-seven miles.

- [FO] There's an airport right below us here.

- [CAP] They said it won't accommodate us.

- [FO] Okay.

- [CAP] Let's see if you can keep us with the throttles in a 10 to 15 degree turn?

- [DF] I'll play 'em, I'll play 'em. I'll power up this number three engine and try to accommodate you.

- [FE] Go ahead, SAM, with any help you could give us. - [CAP] You had the thing leveled off for a minute.

- [SAM] United 232, understand you have numbers one and three engines operating--

- [CAP] Can't think of anything that we haven't done. - [SAM] You have absolutely no hydraulic power

- [CAP] Really isn't a procedure for this. - [SAM] You have no control over the aircraft. Is that correct?

- [DF] The only thing I can think about that might help at some point here is put the landing gear down. It might help hold the nose down a bit.

- [SAM] Okay, United 232, I've got operational engineering on it's way over here.

- [ATC] When you get turned to that 240 heading, sir, the airport will be about 12 o'clock, 38 miles.

- [SAM]...at the present time you are doing about everything that you can possibly do...

- [FO] Okay, we are trying to control it just by power alone. - [SAM]...your flaps and slats are in the up position are they not?

- [FE] That is affirmative, that is affirmative, that is affirmative. - [FO] We have no hydraulics at all, so we are doing our best here.

- [ATC] Roger, we've notified the emergency equipment out in that area, sir. The equipment is standing by.

- [CAP] Everybody ready?

- [DF] Anything above 210's gonna give you a nose-up moment.

- [CAP] We have almost no control of the airplane.

- [FO] We have no hydraulics at all.

- [CAP] It's gonna be tough, it's gonna be rough.

- [FA] So... we're gonna evacuate?

- [CAP] Yeah. We're gonna have the gear down, and if we can keep the airplane on the ground and stop standing up--

- [CAP]...give us a second or two before you evacuate.

- [CAP] Brace will be the signal, be over the PA system. Brace. Brace. Brace.

- [FA] And that will be to evacuate?

- [CAP] Ah, no, that will be to brace for landing. - [FA] Uh-huh.

- [CAP] If you have to evacuate, you'll get the command signal to evacuate.

- [CAP] But, I really have my doubts you'll see us standing up honey.

- [CAP] Good luck, sweetheart.

- [FA] Thanks, you too.

- [FE] Okay, we'll be trying to get in there.

- [SAM] Okay, United 232--

- [CAP] Heading's 240.

- [DF] OK, I'm gonna try to hold you about 210, see if it makes a difference if I bump it, just-- bump it in the air.

- [SAM] We're scurrying around and I've got people looking for more information. - [DF] This may be the world's fastest tricycle.

- [FE] She says there appears to be some damage on that one wing.

- [FE] Do you want me to go back and take a look?

- [DF] No, we don't have time.

- [CAP] Okay, go ahead, see what you can see.

- [CAP] Not that it'll do us any good.

- [CAP] Wish we had a little better control of the elevator.

- [CAP] They told us the autopilot would do this but it sure as hell won't.

- [CAP Ah-- Try yours again.

- [FO] I can't get it on. - [CAP] Well we got the ah--

- [DF] OK, we've come into the clear! - [CAP] Turn baby!

- [DF] Which way do you want it, Al? - [CAP] & [FO] Left!

- [CAP] Come on back... come on back... come on back...

- [CAP] Soon as that vert-

- [CAP] Go for it, go for it!

- [CAP] Watch that vertical speed the second it starts to move.

- [CAP] Come back.

- [CAP] Come back.

- [CAP] Come back.

- [CAP] Go for it, go for it.

- [CAP] If we can get this under control elevator wise we can work on the steering later.

- [DF] We need to go left again.

- [CAP] You keep going right 240 'cause we still got 2,000 feet to go.

- [CAP] United 232, ah, we're just gonna have to continue one more right turn.

- [CAP] We have the elevator pretty much under control within three or 400 feet...

- [CAP]...but we still can't do much with steering.

- [ATC] United 232 heavy, roger, understand you have the elevator possibly under control...

- [ATC]...enough to hold altitude? - [FO] Barely.

- [CAP] Negative, we don't have it, but we are better, that's all.

- [ATC] Roger.

- [DF] You wanna turn right? - [CAP] Yeah, let's turn right.

- [DF] All right, here we go.

- [CAP] How far is the field now, please?

- [ATC] United 232 heavy you're currently 33 miles northeast.

- [CAP] Okay, thank you.

- [CAP] Just let her ease down. (knocking)

- [CAP] God, I wish they'd unlock that damn door!

- [CAP] Ah, pull the circuit breaker on that door, just unlock it, will ya?

- [ATC] United 232 heavy, there are a couple of really small airports

- [ATC] out in the vicinity here and Storm Lake is 4,200 feet by 75.

- [ATC] That's about 15 miles east of your position.

- [FO] Roger, we're still going down. Trying to control it.

- [FO] As we get a little lower we'll pick it out.

- [FE] All right, I walked to the back, and we've got a lot of damage to the tail section.

- [FE] We could see through the window.

- [SAM] Okay, United 232, you have a lot of damage to the tail section?

- [FE] The leading edge of the elevator is damaged.

- [FE] I mean, there's damage there that I can see.

- [FE] I don't know how much there is that I cannot see,

- [FE] I can see it on the leading edge, on the outer parts.

- [SAM] United 232, engineering is assembling

- [SAM] right now and they're listening to us. - [CAP] (inaudible cabin announcement)

- [FE] Okay, number two engine blew.

- [FE] Severe shudders and vibration through the airplane when it blew.

- [FE] Then we tried to pull that throttle back on number two

- [FE] it wouldn't come back, it was frozen.

- [FE] We shut it down, turned off the fuel on that engine,

- [FE] pulled the fire handle on it,

- [FE] and we've only been able to hold--

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, there is a small airport at 12 o'clock and seven miles.

- [ATC] The runway, 4,000 feet long there.

- [FE] We're down to 9,000 feet and we're trying to put into Sioux City.

- [FE] I, ah, I think we're gonna have to use the alternate gear to get the gear down.

- [FO] Hey, I'm controlling it myself right now.

- [FO] As soon as the Captain gets back on he'll give me a hand, he's talking on the PA.

- [CAP] Start this sucker down a little more.

- [FE] I think we're gonna be kinda busy here.

- [FE] There's anything I can talk to you about, I'll call--

- [CAP] She talkin' to SAM?

- [DF] Yeah, she's talking to SAM.

- [DF] I'm gonna alternate-gear you, that might even help.

- [DF] But if there's no hydraulic fluid I don't know how the outboard ailerons are gonna help you.

- [CAP] How do we get the landing gear down?

- [DF] They can free-fall, the only thing is we alternate gear.

- [DF] We got the doors down?

- [CAP] Yep.

- [FO] Yeah, we're gonna have trouble stopping, too.

- [CAP] Yeah, we don't have any brakes.

- [FO] No brakes?

- [CAP] Well, we'll have some brakes.

- [DF] Braking's gonna be a one-shot deal, you just mash it-- mash it once, that's all you get.

- [DF] I'm gonna turn you. I'm gonna give you a left back to the airport, is that OK?

- [CAP] I got it.

- [CAP] United 232, ah, we're starting to turn back to the airport now.

- [CAP] Since we have no hydraulics, braking is gonna really be a problem.

- [CAP] I would suggest the emergency equipment be toward the far end of the runway.

- [CAP] I think under the circumstances, regardless of the condition of the airplane, when we stop we're going to evacuate.

- [CAP] So you might notify the ground crew pretty much, ah, we're gonna do that.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy wilco sir.

- [CAP] If you can continue that left turn to about 220 heading sir, that'll take you right to the airport.

- [CAP] What's your ceiling right now? - [FO] Two twenty, roger.

- [ATC] Ah, ceiling is 4,000, broken, visibility one-five underneath it.

- [CAP] And the airport elevation? - [DF] How far from the airport?

- [ATC] One thousand ninety-eight.

- [FO] Well, at 5,000 feet, we ought to break out of the clouds.

- [FO] If we have a problem about the spoilers, Al, we won't have those either, will we?

- [CAP] I don't think that's gonna help.

- [CAP] I'm off for just a second to buckle up.

- [FO] Okay. - [DF] Okay, just tell me what you need.

- [DF] Holler what you need.

- [CAP] What did SAM say, good luck?

- [FE] He hasn't said anything.

- [CAP] Well, forget them.

- [CAP] Tell 'em, ah, you're leaving the air,

- [CAP] and you're gonna come back up here and help us...

- [CAP]...and screw 'em.

- [DF] When you get a chance, ask them how far out we are.

- [CAP] How far are we away from the airport now?

- [ATC] 35 miles, and if you continue that left turn,

about another 15 or 20 degrees, it'll take you right to the runway.

- [CAP] Okay, we don't have a localizer or a glide slope, so--

- [ATC] Yes, sir, you're well too far north of it now.

- [CAP] Okay.

- [SAM] United 232, one more time, no hydraulic quantity, is that correct?

- [CAP] We gotta level off a little bit.

- [FE] Affirmative, affirmative, affirmative.

- [CAP] We're 6,000 feet above the field right now,

- [CAP] about 18 miles to where we want to be on the glide slope.

- [FE] Add a couple of knots for those speeds up there. - [DF] Yeah, we'll be with power.

- [CAP] Does anybody have any ideas about putting that gear down right now?

- [DF] All right, I would...

- [CAP] Should we free-fall it?

- [DF] I don't know, I haven't got any good ideas. - [FO] Gotta get out of the way to get to the door.

- [CAP] Put it down. - [FO] Try it out.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, your present heading looks good.

- [CAP] See how close we can come to holding it.

- [FO] Apply a little power.

- [DF] I can slow you down. Wanna go to 185?

- [CAP] Nope.

- [FE] All green on the landing gear down.

- [CAP] Go for it, go ahead. Keep it at 185.

- [CAP] Okay, let's start it down now. Ease back.

- [FE] Gear handle down, gear handle down.

- [CAP] Okay, lock up, put everything...

- [DF] Oh shit, there go the slats.

- [CAP] Little right turn, don't have much to do.

- [CAP] Sit down, lock up.

- [CAP] Ah, get up there and see what she's doing for power.

- [CAP] Right turns.

- [CAP] Level up first.

- [CAP] Level up your turn.

- [CAP] Straighten out the turn.

- [CAP] Get yourself all buttoned up.

- [CAP] Level up here.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, can you still make the slight right turns?

- [CAP] Yeah, right turns are no problem, just left turns. - [ATC] Roger.

- [CAP] Well mama, make those baseball games after all.

- [FO] You in good and tight?

- [DF] I'm not in at all, Bill.

- [FO] No, not you, but her.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, sir you're well too far north. - [CAP] Pull it back. We know.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, your present heading is a little close, sir.

- [ATC] Can you make a shallow left turn about 10 degrees or so?

- [CAP] I'll try. - [FO] Back on the controls.

- [DF] Gotta get my glasses on, I can't see shit. - [FO] Approach, where's the airport?

- [ATC] United 232, the airport's currently 12 o'clock and two-one miles.

- [CAP] Twenty-one miles, and 1,000 feet, we got to level off.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, you're gonna have to widen out just slightly to your left, sir, to make the turn to final...

- [ATC]...and also it'll take you away from the city. - [CAP] Little left bank.

- [CAP] Whatever you do, keep us away from the city. - [DF] Hold this thing level if you can.

- [CAP] Back! Back! Level baby level! - [FE] We're turning now. - [FO] More power! Full power!

- [DF] Power picks 'em up! - [FE] Do you want this seat? - [DF] Yes, do you mind?

- [FE] I don't mind, I think that you know what you were doing there before.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, fly heading one-eight-zero, 180.

- [CAP] I don't think we can do that, but we'll try.

- [CAP] Can we turn left?

- [ATC] You're currently one-seven miles northeast of the airport, you're doing good.

- [CAP] It has to be a right turn to 180, we can't do anything about it.

- [CAP] Level it off.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, there's a tower five miles off on your right side, 3,400 in height.

- [FO] Roger. - [DF] Keep turning right Al, keep turning right.

- [CAP] Gotta level this sucker off. The only thing I was afraid of was putting down that gear in case we have to ditch.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, how steep a right turn can you make, sir?

- [CAP] About a 30 degree bank.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger. Turn right heading one-eight-zero.

- [FO] One-eighty.

- [CAP] We got to level this sucker off, come back, come back... - [DF] I got the tower in view.

- [CAP] Come back, come back. All the way back!

- [DF] I can't handle that steep a bank. Can't handle that steep a bank.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, I've been advised there's a four-lane highway up in that area sir, if you can pick that up.

- [CAP] Okay, ah, we'll see what we can do here.

- [CAP] We've already put down the landing gear, and we're gonna have to be putting down on something solid if we can.

- [DF] Damn it, I wish we hadn't put that gear down.

- [FE] Ah well. - [DF] We don't know.

- [CAP] Just keep turning if you can.

- [DF] Which way do you wanna go?

- [CAP] We gotta go to one-eighty.

- [CAP] And right is the only way to go. So we can't control the airplane.

- [CAP] That way.

- [FO] All right, I think we're gonna have to try it straight ahead here, Al. I think what we're gonna...

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, if you can hold that altitude, sir, the right turn to one eighty would put you on about ten miles east of the airport.

- [CAP] That's what we're trying to do.

- [FO] Let's see if we can get a shallow descent.

- [CAP] That's what I'm trying to do, get this thing under control.

- [CAP] When it starts up, push. - [FO] Okay.

- [FO] Here we go. Push hard. Push hard.

- [DF] When the speed bleeds back, you'll catch it. Now where do you wanna go?

- [CAP] I wanna keep turning right, I wanna go to the airport. - [DF] You wanna go to the airport?

- [CAP] Get as close to the airport as we can. - [DF] OK.

- [CAP] If we have to set this thing down in dirt, we set it in the dirt.

- [CAP] Ah, get on the air and tell 'em we got about four minutes to go.

- [FO] Tower, we got about three, four minutes to go, looks like.

- [CAP] PA system, PA system, tell the passengers to brace.

- [FE] Four minutes to touchdown. Four minutes to touchdown.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger. Can you pick up a road or something up there?

- [FO] We're trying it.

- [FO] We're still fluctuating altitude anywhere from 2000 feet up to 1500 feet down now, in waves.

- [DF] Which way do you wanna go? - [CAP] Right, right--

- [DF] The airport's down there, got it. - [CAP] I don't see it yet.

- [FO] As soon as it starts down, back we go.

- [FO] Okay, now you can bring 'em up.

- [FO] There's the airport.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, airport's about 18 miles southeast

- [ATC] of your position about 220 on the heading.

- [ATC] But we're gonna need you southbound away from the city first, if you can hold that 180 heading.

- [FO] But we're trying, trying to get to it right now.

- [DF] If I hold you about 200 knots, I seem to be able to get enough control--

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, advise if you can pick up a road or anything where you can possibly land it on that.

- [CAP] Okay, ah, we're 180 degree heading. Now, what do you want?

- [ATC] United 232, if you can hold the altitude, the 180 heading will work fine for about seven miles.

- [CAP] Okay, we're trying to turn back-- Forward! Make a left turn, left.

- [DF] No left at all. - [CAP] No left at all.

- [DF] I'll give you some.

- [CAP] Back! Back! Back! Back. Back.

Forward... Forward... Forward...

- [CAP] Won't this be a fun landing?

- [CAP] Back...

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, can you hold that heading, sir?

- [FO] Yeah, ah, we're on it for a little while.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger. That heading will put you currently 15 miles northeast of the airport.

- [ATC] If you can hold that, it'll put you on about a three mile final.

- [FO] Okay. We are giving it heck.

- [CAP] I'll tell you what, I'll write off your damn PC if we make this.

- [CAP] When we make this.

- [CAP] Whew. Just hold that heading if you can.

- [CAP] That's fine.

- [CAP] Turn left. Help me turn left so we know what it's doing.

- [CAP] Back. Back... Back.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, the airport's currently 12 o'clock and one-three miles.

- [CAP] Forward. Forward.

- [FO] Okay, we're looking for it. - [CAP] Forward.

- [FO] 12 o'clock, 13 miles, we gotta start down.

- [DF] Ask what the field elevation is? - [CAP] Field elevation is what again?

- [FO] Thousand eighty. - [ATC] Eleven hundred, one-thousand one-hundred.

- [CAP] Okay, thank you.

- [DF] Okay, let's, ah, start her down. We gotta ease it down.

- [CAP] We are starting down a little bit now.

- [CAP] Got a little better control of the elevator.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger.

- [CAP] Ease it down, ease it down.

- [ATC] The airport's currently at your 1 o'clock position, one-zero miles.

- [DF] I got the runway, if you don't.

- [CAP] I don't, come back.

- [DF] It's off to the right over there.

- [FO] It's right there. Let's see if we can hold five-hundred feet a minute.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, if you can't make the airport, sir,

- [ATC] there's an interstate runs north to south on the east side of the airport.

- [ATC] It's a four-lane interstate.

- [DF] See, we got the tower right here at our 1 o'clock low.

- [CAP] We're just passing it right now, we're gonna try for the airport.

- [CAP] That the runway right there?

- [CAP] We have the runway in sight. We have the runway in sight. We have the runway in sight.

- [CAP] We'll be with you shortly.

- [CAP] Thanks a lot for your help.

- [DF] Bring her on down, ease her down. - [FO] Oh baby!

- [DF] Ease her down!

- [CAP] Tell them we're just two minutes from landing.

- [FE] Two minutes. Two minutes.

- [ATC] United 232, the wind's currently three-six-zero at one-one.

- [ATC] Three-sixty at 11.

- [ATC] You're cleared to land on any runway.

- [CAP] (laughs) Roger.

- [CAP] Ah, you wanna be particular and make it a runway, huh?

- [DF] What's the wind?

- [CAP] Say the wind one more time.

(everyone talking at once)

- [CAP] Ah. We were all three talking at once, say the wind one more time.

- [ATC] Zero-one-zero at one-one.

- [ATC] And there is a runway that's closed, sir,

- [ATC] that could probably work to the south. It runs northeast to southwest.

- [CAP] We're pretty well lined up on this one here.

- [DF] Put the spoilers on touch.

- [CAP] Get the brakes on with me.

- [ATC] United 232 Heavy, roger, sir. That's a closed runway, sir, that'll work, sir.

- [ATC] We're getting the equipment off that runway, and they'll line up on this one.

- [CAP] How long is it?

- [ATC] Sixty-six hundred feet, six-thousand six-hundred.

- [ATC] Equipment's coming off.

- [CAP] Pull the power back.

- [CAP] That's right.

- [CAP] Pull the left one back.

- [FO] Pull the left one back.

- [ATC] Don't worry about the airspeed, at the end of the runway it's just wide open field.

- [CAP] Left throttle.

- [Warning Sound Effect] Pull up! Pull up! - [CAP] Left! Left! Left! Left! Left!

(Sound of impact)

(Sounds of slide projector cycling)

(music)
