[Jed] Look, I did see this small herd on the fence line

in the back forty, and I was confused because these are

the same cows I saw on the auction lot a little while back.

Okay, I'm not sure what I'm looking at here, Jed.

I am certain that those are the same cows that Willis

bought at that auction,

but they've been grazing out on Tucker's land, right?

So what, maybe the Hamiltons got the permit or something?

I mean maybe.

You would have thought I would have heard something by now.

Willis would be rubbing that in my face every chance he got.

[Jed] Yeah, maybe.

Listen if I hear anything at church, I'll let you know.

[Daniel] All right, well,

I'm going to head out, check that pump near the pond.

[Jed] All right, great.

I'll get the feed ready for this evening.

-Appreciate that. -All right.

[Aunt Amy] I just couldn't resist.

I can't wait to see the look on baby Thomas' face

when he sees this.

I just hope we can get it working.

You are so good with Thomas.

Ah, well, children are a blessing,

and he's been a real joy to have around on the ranch.

Yeah. I can't believe it's been a year already.

It's amazing how fast time flies by.

And yet some things will never change.

Still no word on the feedlot permit?

No.

And although patience is not my favorite virtue,

I really have faith that it'll arrive soon.

In the meantime, distraction!

[Janet laughs]

Okay. Ready? Let's try this.

Oh, no.

Patience.

[James] Good morning.

Oh, James, you are just in time. We need your expertise.

Is this a classic train set?

This is really cool.

Right! It's for the party tonight.

Yeah, Tina asked us to help with the decorations,

but I figure you cannot have a train themed birthday party

without an actual train.

Absolutely.

[Aunt Amy] Do you remember you used to have one just like this?

You would play with it for hours.

We could barely get you to come for dinner.

I loved that train set.

The only problem is we can't seem to get it working.

So can you help?

Conductor James, at your service.

Well, I should probably get going.

I have back to back patients and meetings today.

I will be so ready for a big piece of cake tonight.

Oh... Are you bringing Eric as your date to the party?

I'm just, I'm buying paper plates.

I'm just asking purely from a numbers standpoint.

Uh, I'm not sure after what I said to him at dinner.

Why, what happened?

Do you have a container...

Uh, yeah.

Um, I basically gave him an ultimatum.

I said either one of us quits the clinic,

or we let go of whatever this is.

Oh.

So I guess we're still working things out.

Okay. Well...

I'll remain hopeful and save a plate for him anyway.

Peace offering for Eric.

Just save enough for your father.

Where is Dad? Is he still sleeping?

Oh, no, no. He was up before the rooster.

He thinks he's found the cow that's going to win

the blue ribbon at the State Fair next week.

Hmm.

Yeah, he could really use a win.

Although I suspect that the Newmans will roll out

their highest priced show cattle for the competition.

Mh-hm.

[Aunt Amy] And how's it going over there, Conductor James?

Do we need to buy you one of these?

Choo choo.

I don't know, we may never see him again?

I know.

Oh, and would you mind stopping by the Daisy Mae Cafe

to pick up Thomas' birthday cake?

Maggie said it would be ready at noon.

Yeah, absolutely.

I have a meeting with a congregation member at 11.

And then I can go pick it up after that.

[Aunt Amy] Great.

Give it a shot. Turn up the juice just a little bit.

Start slow.

Okay, okay.

Hey!

There we go. Still got it.

[laughter]

All right, Hamiltons, on with your days.

Full steam ahead.

This does not make sense.

[vehicle approaching]

You heading out?

Yeah. I got a little business in town.

Anything for me?

Yeah, actually.

You got something here from a realtor in Crossroad Springs.

You planning on buying something?

I don't think I need to keep you in the loop

of my property portfolio.

Well, I was just curious.

Yeah, I'm sure you got more important things to do

than keep tabs on me.

Yeah.

[Jackson's phone rings]

The wheels of industry keep turning no matter where I am.

Watch yourself.

[Daniel chuckles] The wheels of industry keep turning

no matter where I am.

That's nice.

And is Thomas saying any words yet?

Well, just babbling.

He does say baba, which I think means bottle or ball.

Or maybe he just thinks he's a sheep.

[Thomas babbles]

Well, he doesn't appear to have any wool,

and I don't see any other signs of him being a sheep.

No, not yet.

Then I'm happy to say that Thomas is hitting

all of his age appropriate milestones,

and he is a perfectly healthy little human.

Oh, that is so wonderful to hear.

So we'll see you guys again for his 16 month check in.

Okay.

And I will see both of you tonight for the party.

Yes.

I'm so looking forward to it.

I'm so excited. Actually, can I ask you a favor?

Of course.

My father's coming in tonight for Thomas' birthday,

and, I'm really excited for him to meet his grandson.

That is so great.

Yeah, the thing is,

well, as you know, I haven't seen my dad in years,

and I only reached out to him because this little guy

deserves to have his grandfather in his life,

even though Dad hasn't been the most stable father to me.

I know it's a lot on Dad, so if he comes, when he comes tonight,

I just want him to feel welcome and comfortable.

Oh, Tina, you don't have to worry about that one bit.

Our family will welcome your father with open arms.

You know I know that.

I guess I'm just a little nervous, but thank you.

It's admirable for you to live with

such an open heart, Tina.

You're giving your father another chance to connect.

And who knows, he may just surprise you.

Yeah.

[Thomas happy babbles]

He's ready for the party.

[James] So Patty, what's been on your mind?

[Patty] I suppose I understand why she wouldn't stay

in Crossroad Springs, but why not Cedar Rock?

I mean, New York is a long plane ride away.

I've worked two jobs to put her through school,

and now all she wants to do is leave.

Oh, Patty, it is a blessing to have a daughter that's both

capable and confident enough to leave the nest.

Although I know that it's tough, I do.

I remember how my dad was when Janet and I wanted to leave.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful.

I have a wonderful daughter, but I think it's more about me.

And I still want a fulfilling life.

And you deserve to have that.

What is a fulfilling life look like for you?

Well, I'm a potter.

Oh, yes, I know, a very talented one.

My Aunt Amy, she's a big fan and a huge collector of your work.

Yeah, we use it every Sunday night for dinner.

Well, now that is an honor.

And that's why I want to keep going.

So what's stopping you?

Local markets weren't bringing in enough business,

so my daughter was helping me transition

to selling my pottery online.

And she was taking care of all the sales, and the shipping.

Business really picked up.

That sounds great.

I don't think I can do all of that on my own.

And I don't want to give up my business.

Therein lies the problem.

Well, the good news is that you came to the right place.

Are you any good at online sales?

No, absolutely not.

[they both laugh]

But, you know, Patty, we have a small but strong

congregation here, and we all believe

in helping each other out.

Like the food pantry that's starting up.

Exactly. No one person needs to do anything on their own.

We all love sharing our individual knowledge,

so I'll just start asking around.

I know something will come up.

Thank you, Pastor James.

I hope, I hope it works out.

Let's pray on it together.

Okay, thank you.

Great.

And here you are.

Hi, Maggie, oh! Are you okay?

It seems there's been an explosion here.

An explosion?

[Maggie] Oh, I should probably change my apron.

I've had a terribly busy morning, I was baking...

Oh, I hear you about busy.

My daughter can't go shopping with me today

because apparently she has a job now.

Oh, is that so?

And Jackson is all wrapped up in thinking about

his long term plans, and I just,

I want to know what the plans are, but he won't listen.

Charlene, I...

It's like, I'm not even part of the plans.

He's having all these meetings with realtors and developers

and who knows who, and...

-[timer goes off] -Oh, sorry.

Are you on a clock?

Well, my cakes are.

It's just everyone is so overbooked.

You know, I used to be the one that was coming and going.

And here I just feel at loose ends.

And...

Charlene, I hear you.

And I know that we all just want to feel heard and valued,

especially by the people that we love.

What if, while you're here, you find something

that could give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment?

Well, that's my plan,

but I don't even know where to start here.

You know, none of my Houston activities directly translate

to Crossword Springs.

Well, what are some of the things that brought you joy

back home?

Oh, too many to mention. I was always so busy.

-[timer goes off] -Oh, sorry.

It's the other one.

Oh, I really do need to get back to, um...

Yeah, you do that, and I will have a good think on

what will work best here in Crossword Springs.

Um, did you talk to James about that?

I feel like he should be consulted here.

They have new hymns, added melodies.

Our church in Houston has them, and they are just heavenly.

They have meaning, importance to the congregation.

I didn't realize. I just thought...

Well, your thoughts are in the right place, it's just,

bringing this cowboy church together.

I'm so sorry.

I didn't mean to step on any toes.

I was just trying to enhance the worship for all,

Alexis is at her job, and I'm just

wandering around town looking pretty.

Pretty gorgeous, if you ask me.

Hey, I just, I want to do something

so I can feel part of the community.

I want to get everyone on the same team.

Well, good luck with that.

I don't think I'm going to be much help.

Alrighty, who wants to drive me to the state fair next weekend?

Ah! The state fair?

Yeah, Janie's going to be singing.

Oh, oh, there's a weigh in for giant vegetables,

a livestock competition,

oh, and would you look at that?

A dog show. Everyone can get behind an adorable dog.

Yeah, okay Mom.

Wait. That's it.

I am going to sponsor a dog

and represent Crossroad Springs in the state fair dog show.

Where are you going to get a dog?

Details, Alexis.

Okay, well, can I keep the dog after?

What? No, no.

No.

Thanks again for the drive to the station.

My pleasure. I'm glad you accepted.

You and Lewis, you got a lot on your plate,

especially with getting Thomas' party all set.

And, boy, I sure remember those days.

You know, I haven't seen my dad in years.

I hope I still recognize him.

You will.

I didn't think I be so nervous.

Well, nerves make sense.

You know, Tina, we're here for you, and we're happy to be.

No matter what.

Thank you, Willis.

Okay.

Looks like the bus isn't here yet.

[toy train cho chos]

Oh, wow! Now this is a party.

Well, it was all Tina's planning.

I just helped bring it all together.

Is that a train set?

I've always wanted one of these. It's amazing.

It's just a little something from me to Thomas.

That is so thoughtful. Thank you.

You're welcome.

How's the birthday boy doing?

Oh, he's been out like a light all day.

I was going to let Tina wake him up when she got home,

but honestly, I don't know what's taking so long.

I hope everything's okay.

We just have to stay positive.

[Lewis] Right.

-[loud whistle blowing] -Happy Birthday!

Shhhh!

Birthday boy is sleeping.

Sorry.

We'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible.

I'm so sorry.

How are you doing, Lewis?

-Good. How are you? -I'm great, thanks.

Yeah, look, this is for Thomas.

He might be a little young for it,

but I think it's pretty cool.

It sounds like a real train whistle.

No way.

Oh, wait a second. That's an electric train set.

Yep.

-That is so much cool. -Yeah.

Excuse me. Do you mind?

Ohhh, boys.

I got you now, Willis.

I can't believe I actually thought he would come.

Yeah, I'm sorry, Tina.

I just...

I feel so silly.

You can't fault yourself for this.

You've done nothing wrong.

But I mostly feel bad for Thomas.

He deserves a big, loving family.

Oh, if family is what you want, the Hamiltons are always here

for you, and for Lewis,

and for that beautiful young boy of yours.

That's really kind of you.

I'm not being kind, and it's just the truth.

I don't know what brought you all to us, but here we are.

Our found family.

Can we go home now?

You got it.

Let's not miss one more minute of Thomas' party.

[vehicle starts]

So, look at us at a party together.

Yeah, not as coworkers.

And not as friends.

So what does that make us?

Look who's awake.

-Ahhh! -Hey!

We've all been waiting just for you, little one.

Thank you for watching him while we did the chores.

Oh, it was my pleasure.

Do you want to go see Daddy?

Yowwwwww!

[Lewis] Ohhh, come here, Thomas.

Let's go check out this train set.

Train set. Come here. Choo choo.

Don't worry. There's no rules against kisses around here.

Well, actually, there is no more rules at the clinic either.

Aunt Amy, I'd like for you to meet my boyfriend, Eric.

It's nice to officially meet you, Boyfriend Eric.

Yeah, it's nice to meet you, too.

-Maggie, Cody. -Hey.

I'm happy you both could make it.

I know Tina and Lewis are going to be thrilled

that you both could come.

Yeah. Of course.

I can't wait to see Thomas blow out those candles

and dig into that cake.

A lot of firsts for him today.

[Aunt Amy] Oh, guys. Come see.

Thomas is playing with his train.

It's so cute.

Tina. Are you okay?

Yeah, I think I actually am okay.

Are you sure?

Dad didn't show.

But...

[Tina] Look at everybody else who did.

All in this room for Thomas.

This is our family, Lewis.

I love you.

I love you, too.

[Willis] All right. Who here wants to eat some cake?

Oh, yes.

Yes, please.

Let's do it.

[happy greetings from all]

[Maggie] Okay, here we go. Ready?

Happy birthday Thomas.

[all together] Happy birthday, Thomas!
