Who knows what our tomorrow will
bring?
Whether joy or a sorrowful thing, not the sun in the morning, nor the stars in
the evening, nor the moon by night.
Who knows whether you'll always be true, true as I would wish
of you. Not the sun in the morning, nor the stars in the evening, nor the moon
by night.
We can't see what lies before us
Though our hearts try to be wise
Is there happiness
in store for us?
Is it really written in the sky?
Who knows what our tomorrow will bring If our love is our
winter or spring Not the sun in the morning, nor the stars in the evening
Nor the moon by night For many years,
the wildlife of Africa has been in danger of extermination by
indiscriminate hunting and poaching.
In order to protect the animals, Vast tracts are now being reserved as
sanctuaries or national parks.
In each one, work is carried out by only a handful of dedicated men,
game wardens, assisted by native rangers.
They operate from remote camps and outposts, often hundreds of miles apart,
keeping in contact with each other through a central radio control.
This story is about Vallada, a newly opened reserve.
pioneered by Chief Warden Andrew Miller and his brother.
Tina, come on now, come on.
That's it, I'm not going to hurt you. Just, just be quiet.
Good.
Let's face it, Andy, what do you really know about this Alice Lang, huh?
I said, what do you really know about Alice Lang?
Oh, uh...
Two letters a week for three years, you get to know a little bit about a person.
Yeah, but you've always been such a sort of a hermit. I mean, I thought you liked
it out here with your books and your animals.
Well, what do you want to change it all for now?
Oh, I don't know.
I must be in love with her, I suppose.
Andy, how can you possibly be in love with a girl that you've never even met?
Quite easy.
No, you can't.
You've got to be with a girl to get to love her. You've got to be able to grab
hold of her, look in her eyes, kiss her.
You have to, perhaps.
But I don't think that's necessary with Alice.
She's intelligent and... She had a yen for Africa long before she heard about
me. Well,
if she hadn't a strong sense of duty, she'd have hired a nurse to look after
her mother and come out here and had a good time.
Yes, but all these things don't make her the right woman as a wife.
She'll be possessive and that'll be the finish of your books and your study.
Might even be the finish of you altogether, Andy.
You know what these city girls are like. They don't belong out here.
Well, I'd have thought that Flora was a good enough example for you.
You were just unlucky, Rusty.
Maybe I was.
But I stood a darn sight better chance of making a go of it than you ever
could. You think you know everything, don't you?
Anyway, I don't know what you're worrying about because I'll probably be
an old and doddering man by the time she gets out here.
I hope so.
Sleep well, Mother.
Harriet!
Your African boyfriend seems to be getting rather impatient.
Harriet, how dare you?
What's all this?
New passport.
Yellow fever certificate.
For the previous, aren't you, Alice?
You're going to desert Mother after all.
Of course I'm not. You know I'd never let anyone else look after her. You must
have some reason to think that she's going to... Harriet!
You really must know.
Mother insisted that I got these things so that if anything did happen to her,
I'd be ready.
You know, Alice, I think there's something very unhealthy in the way
you're carrying on with this stranger, tilling him things. You have no right to
read my letters. Making love to him by post.
Well, I haven't had a chance to do anything else except write letters for
the last four years, have I? So you do resent Mother. I do not resent anything.
You know, I was only too happy that I was a nurse and able to look after her.
It's just that it's cut me off from the world. And so you go crying to a
stranger in Africa.
I think that... I'm not interested in what you think anymore, Harriet.
You go back to your responsibilities and leave me to mine.
For goodness sake, Alice, come out here to Vallaba and let's find out the truth
about us. Please give me that. I don't ask you to marry me until you've seen
me, but the years are slipping by.
Alice. Don't forget.
I know what's going on.
Camp 3 calling Dikers Drift. Camp 3 calling Dikers Drift. Andrew Miller
here. You're receiving me, over.
Yes, I'm receiving you.
I've just taken down a cable for you signed Ellis.
Ellis Lang.
Go ahead and read it, Sergeant.
I am now able to join you immediately, the lover, if you still want me, love,
Ellis.
Is there going to be a reply?
Over.
I'll call you later.
Do you want me to stand by for a definite time for an answer?
Over.
Are you receiving me, Andy?
Over.
Try to muck your butt, Sergeant.
Yes, there is a reply.
Stand by.
At a slang.
Earliest air passage.
Cable flight and arrival date.
We'll meet you at Dykastrift. Love, Andrew. No, you better say, much love.
Andrew.
Message in.
You got it? In the bag.
Out.
Maxim. Maxim!
Maxim!
Maxim! Maxim!
Go along, Tom. See you in a few days.
Will you be stopping at Dykus Drift? No, I'll meet Alice off the train. All been
well. I'll bring her back here.
Good luck then, Andy.
Get out of the car! Get out!
of coming in.
Don't worry about him, he'll stay.
Only be here a minute anyway.
Really on my way to Dicus Drift.
Then why trouble to stop?
Come Shiva, come.
Morning, Mrs.
Borowskowski. Andrew, how nice.
Have you come to lunch? We've had ours, but we'll soon get some more cooked.
Oh, no thanks. I'm just stopping for a moment, that's all.
We heard you were going down to Dyker's Drift.
Yes, we always listen in to camp-to-camp conversation.
And why not?
There's nothing else to do in this godforsaken hole except put on the
wireless and try and get some news from somewhere.
Even the lab.
Oh, Anton, where are those lazy houseboys? They've been missing all
morning. Christina, you talk too much.
It's yours.
You know I make biltong from the game which strays from the reserve onto my
land. I'm within my rights.
There was quite a lot of biltong that went away in that van.
There was a lot of game lately.
Only because you've been burning so much lately.
On my land, I'll burn when and where I please.
I'd be obliged, Mr.
Borislavski, if you'd keep from burning on the lower Follines stretch for the
next week.
I don't want to see the whole of Alaba go up in flames.
I know the law.
If I were you, I'd keep within it.
Andrew, please don't take any notice of Anton.
One has to make allowances.
He had a terrible time in Poland.
But he says we're making good money now and we should be out of here in a few
months' time.
picture of zebra.
Oh, dear, my dear, but where have you been so long?
Oh, pigtails. Where did you find this one?
This is Bonaparte.
Bonaparte. What name do you think up for him?
Oh, and you can't help me to make my pictures. I'm sorry, there's no time.
Oh.
I know why you're in such a stupid hurry.
Yes. Why is that?
You are meeting Alice Lange at Dyker's Drift, aren't you?
Oh, yes, that was the idea.
Is she pretty?
Hmm? Is she pretty?
Who? Alice Lange.
I don't really know.
Is she a relative?
No, just a friend.
Old?
About 25.
Staying long?
I don't know.
Good bye, Bonaparte.
Look after yourself, pigtails.
Bye bye, Mrs. Barslowski.
Miller, they're calling you from camp three. There seems to be some trouble
with elephants.
All right.
The lava control calling Andrew Miller.
You receiving me, Chief? Over.
Andrew Miller here. Go ahead. What is it?
Elephants reported on the move in the west.
Three of our biggest herds have crossed the river and are heading out of the
sanctuary.
We'll lose the lot, Chief, unless action is taken quickly.
Would have to happen now, wouldn't it?
All right, I'll get some trackers and go after them.
Oh, and before I go, you'd better try and put me in touch with Rusty. He'd
have to deputize for me at Dykastrith Station. Can you do that?
Right, Chief, I'll get in touch with Rusty.
The lava control calling Rusty Miller.
Miss Lang?
Yes?
I'm Rusty, Andrew's brother.
Oh, how do you do?
Imrod.
Where's Andrew?
He's on his way back.
On his way back?
Lost his nerve, I should think. I'll take that for you.
This way.
Yes, but he did right that he'd be here to meet me.
Really?
I'm pulling your leg, Alice. He was coming to meet you, but right now he's
got elephant trouble.
He's got what trouble?
A big herd of elephants have broken out and the farmers want to shoot them.
Andy can't risk losing them, not even for you.
Well,
this is Nike's drift.
Andy fixed you a room in a hotel.
Well, how long will he be?
Could be a week. A week?
Well, can't I go to him?
Alice, this isn't England.
And he might be anywhere in 15,000 square miles.
Still, if you want to, you can jump in the truck and we'll go looking for him.
Well, you don't seem very keen on my going.
No, I'm not.
Why?
I think it's a mistake.
Surely that's up to Andrew to decide, isn't it?
If it's not too much of a nuisance, I'll go in the truck.
No matter how much junk there is in it.
Well, um... It needn't be as uncomfortable as all that.
We'll go in this one.
Just taking delivery of it.
Rusty, what is that?
Biltong.
I've never heard of it. What is it?
When the natives kill any game, they cut it into strips and hang it up in the sun
to preserve it.
It looks terrible.
Surely people don't eat it, do they? It's a great delicacy.
Pay a lot of money for it in the cities. Makes it worthwhile for the poachers.
Our guards are on the watch for them all the time.
I'll beg of one.
Uh-huh
Mr. Miller!
Who is it, Jan?
It's Amos. I found him about 15 miles down, like this. Stay in the car!
Come on, get him down off the horse.
They just say the Tokalosh attack to him is a heck of a mess.
The blankets.
Rusty, let me... I thought I told you to stay where you are. Look, I'm sorry,
Alice, but we've had a casualty. It's Amos, one of our best game guards. I
think he's dead. Now, come on. No.
Well, he's not dead, but where can he be treated?
The hospital, Dyker's Drift.
Dyker's Drift. It's much too far.
No, he needs something now.
Some glucose.
Have you got any sugar?
Yes, no more.
Mansy sugar. And some bandages and some water to wash him with.
You ready with him, Alice?
Yes, we can move him now.
Will you give me a hand?
I'm afraid it's going to be a rough ride, but it's the best we can do.
Be very careful how you lift him. He must be in terrible pain.
Keep him quite flat and don't move his head.
All right, Jan, get him to hospital as quickly as he can. Nimrod will take your
horse back. Oh, Rusty, can you get the other blanket to cover him? Yeah.
It's lucky you were here, miss.
It was a good thing you had him slung head downwards.
If he recovers, I think he might.
He'll owe his life to you.
Will he ever speak again?
Well, there's a chance, but... You get him to hospital as quick as you can,
Jan, okay?
Right, Jan, off you go.
Well done, Alice.
Quite a girl, aren't you?
Well, I was a nurse, you know.
Rusty, who could have done that to him?
They say it was the tokolosh.
Tokolosh? What's that?
Well, it's supposed to be a sort of ape-like dwarf that lives in the
riverbed. That's ridiculous.
Those wounds were obviously made by men.
Maybe you're right, Alice.
But in this country, you can't be sure of anything.
Tell the boys to quiet down a bit, will you, Tom? Hey!
Tulani!
At this rate, we'll have them back in Vallaba in a couple of hours.
Got any spare shells, Tom? I'm out. Here you are.
It's hot.
Don't know about them.
I could do with a drink.
Your girl must think I'm an awful heel.
Why is that, Tom?
Fetching you all this way back.
Don't it worry you?
Rusty would have put her in the picture, and anyway, I'll try and get in touch
with her tonight on the intercom.
Oh, Jim, the three herds are now back in Villarba.
So I'll be setting out for Dyker's Drift once more.
There's been a change of plans, sir. Your brother's driving Miss Lang up to
meet you.
Oh. He is, is he?
Well, in that case, he should be at Camp 1 by nightfall. I'll have to get in
touch with him on the radio and arrange a rendezvous at Camp 2 for tomorrow.
Oh, and by the way, I'm going up by the settlement.
I want to have a chat with the chief.
There's something fishy going on there.
Cheerio.
Cheerio, chief.
What's up, Warner?
Welcome, Nyanga.
Why have all the trackers you sent me disappeared without warning?
Our men must hide.
They cannot help you.
Why must they hide?
The Togolosh has been seen.
The Togolosh?
That creature hasn't been heard of for years, great elephant.
Why should the Togolosh suddenly appear now, huh?
You know, I'm...
Very disappointed in you.
I thought you'd let your people away from the old superstitions, great
elephant.
We want no superstitions in Malaba.
The Toa Lush has struck.
Struck who?
Your game guard.
Which game guard?
The one with the honeyed tongue and the sharp eyes.
Amos, I don't believe you. It is true.
The Togolosh has taken the eyes from his head and the tongue from his mouth.
If Amos has been harmed, it's the work of men.
And they'll be found and punished.
The Togolosh cannot be punished.
We shall see.
You'll hear more of this, Gregorovan.
Is there any more biltong?
Yes, but... All right, then, one last trip.
I'll pay you for all the biltong you have, and that's the finish.
Agreed?
Kulugi.
What's the matter, Sandy?
Trouble? Yes, the tocolosh.
Did the boys see the tocolosh?
Of course they didn't.
Did they see Amos, then?
No, but they got it on the drums.
Scared the loincloths of them. Just melted away.
Well, it may be ridiculous, Alice, but the creature you say doesn't exist, the
tocolosh isn't doing badly for one afternoon.
All right, then, Sandy, I'll talk to the chief.
I'm afraid until then you're on your own.
I've got company.
Just to the left of that outcrop.
That brute's had his eye on me all day.
Looks like the rogue, Dumela.
Dumela?
He who charges.
Take a look. Just to the left of that outcrop.
Are they all like that?
No, he's an outcast, just one step from a killer.
But Andrew, is he up against that sort of thing?
No, they're not all as bad as that, but even so, a herd's quite something to
push around.
Right, I'll do my best. See you.
Oh. Well, this is camp one. Look, Rusty.
Yeah, well, there's plenty of those around here.
Isn't he sweet?
Oh, I'm sorry we have to sleep in tents, but we had a fire.
Well, you had to stay the night.
It's still quite early. Couldn't we go on?
It's 200 miles to the next camp. We'd never get there before dark. Now, you
better have that tent over there, and I'll be over here, okay?
Right, well you go and get cleaned up and then we'll have a drink
What
is
it rusty an elephant's trampled a man I gotta go after him
But I thought you never killed elephants.
When they turn killer, they've got to be shot. It's the only way.
Come on, shusha, shusha. Well, can I come with you?
If I'd want to use you, it'd be.
Hey, Nimrod.
I'm leaving Nimrod to look after you. Save me some dinner, huh?
Nimrod, do you think they'll catch him? Dumela.
Dumela is a mighty one, but of course we'll find him.
Hey!
Good afternoon, Coase.
This is Nimrod here.
Coase, Rusty Miller said I should tell you he's going to hunt for Dumela.
Over. A lava radio controller receiving.
Go ahead, Nimrod.
Over. Dumela has killed someone on the other side of the world.
In a lapper.
Was on it.
That's the Mellor.
Well, I don't know who got him, you or me, but anyway, he's got.
Oh, I'm so frightened.
So was I.
I'm sorry.
That's all right.
I'm sorry I was so stupid.
Toenails polished, one of those feet will make a nice umbrella stand.
Not a bad wedding present for you and Andy.
I know how much money you need for your eyes here.
No, it's no use.
I stopped today.
No more built home.
We're on the air unless you call her up.
What
are
you going to do now?
I could arrest you both.
You know that, don't you?
You poached Bill Tong for so little?
It was the last time.
The payments from Radinoja get smaller and smaller.
Not only do you encourage Great Elephant to break the law, but you shortchange
him as well.
Here.
Take it.
And I will not take away your staff of office.
But I expect every one of your men to be at work, on the road, and the fire break
tomorrow.
But the witch doctor?
Great elephant.
You will defy the witch doctor and his tocolosh, and the men will work
tomorrow. You understand?
Now would you get up?
I'd like to call Camp One, with your permission.
I suppose you're going to blurt this out all over the countryside now.
When a white man attempts to corrupt the Bantu, the job's too big for me to
handle. The police will take care of you, Mr. Borislavski.
Anton!
Anton, you've been lying to me. You promised me you would only sell Biltong
from our own lands.
Come, Christina.
Come to your room.
No. No, Anton. All the time you've been... You've been working with the
poachers.
What have you done to us, Anton?
You... You... You criminal!
I'll come back to you later, Christina.
Senior warden calling camp one. Senior warden calling camp one. Over.
Camp 1 calling Senior Warden can hear you loud and clear.
Go ahead, Andy.
Is Alice with you?
Over.
Yes, she's right beside me. You want to talk to her now? Over.
I'd like to know the news first.
What's happening to Amos? Over.
Amos is in the hospital at Dyker's Drift.
It's touch and go, Andy, but he might live.
Now, where are you spending the night and what's the situation with our
labour? Over.
I'm spending the night at my place.
The boys will be back at work in the morning.
I explain tomorrow. Over.
And here's Alice.
I'll work the switches for you.
Hello, Andrew.
Andy.
Well, it's Alice. I'm here in Vellabur already and...
Sorry, I wasn't able to meet you, Alyssa.
Over. It's all right. I quite understood.
Rusty's been very kind to me.
We had a bit of trouble this evening with a rogue elephant, and... Oh, well,
Rusty'll tell you.
Please.
Well, Jumail had trampled a man out by the new road, so I had to go after him.
Then Nimrod shot him. Over.
Poor Alice.
What an introduction to her new home.
Here's Alice to say good night.
Well, good night, Andrew.
It won't be much longer now, and then... Good night.
Good night, Alice.
See you tomorrow at camp two.
Well, he must have had something on his mind. Old Andy's kind enough.
It was like talking to a stranger.
Now listen, Alice.
It is a stranger you came out here to meet.
Isn't it?
It was so different in England.
Well, we all make mistakes.
I wanted so much to be free and to be able to lead my own life.
Andrew's letters used to make me feel so discontented.
I loved my mother very much.
But I nearly went mad wanting to come out here and join him.
You mean you wanted to turn your paper lover into a man of flesh and blood,
huh?
Well, lots of things start out in one way and then finish up in another.
I mean, you take me and my ex-wife, Flora.
Flora thought that... Africa was like taking a trip to the zoo.
Chuck the monkey a bag of nuts and then dash home for a martini.
Oh, no.
No, it takes a lot more than just wanting to be in love to make a marriage
work out here.
You are a strange man, Rusty.
Yeah.
Would you like a drink?
No, I'm tired.
I think I'll go to bed.
You know, the boys have given you a Zulu name.
Oh? What is it?
They call you Lekwesi.
Lekwesi?
It's the name of the golden power bird.
It has the same color as its wings.
No, Rusty.
Andy's your brother.
Andy doesn't need you.
He's in love with a dream.
So are you.
Well.
That's something you can't do by airmail.
No pigtails?
What's wrong? Nothing wrong.
It's a bit late to be out alone, isn't it? Well, I'm here now.
I must talk to you.
All right.
Why don't you sit down?
No, thank you.
What is it?
About your father?
No, not about him.
Or what he's been doing, or Biltong, or firebreaks, or any of it.
I'm so ashamed of that.
How you must despise us.
I don't despise you, Thea. You're not responsible for your father's actions.
As far as I'm concerned, you're still the same old pigtails.
What is it, Thea?
Why do you want to spoil everything?
Spoil what?
You're marrying her.
You never met her, but you're going to marry this Alice Lange.
Good heavens.
You sure?
Everybody knows.
You've been writing her for years, and tonight on the radio... You talked about
Vallaba being her new home.
I had no idea it was such a popular program.
How can you fall in love with written words?
That's not love.
Love is talking and seeing and sharing.
Where did you learn so much about it?
Well, in a month, I'm 18.
Yes? Your houseboy, Maxine, has a wife of 15. She's going to have a baby. Well,
native girls are different.
Why are they different?
Well, they mature earlier pigtails.
They're women at 14.
Well, I'm a woman at 18.
And stop calling me pigtails.
Look at me, Andy.
Am I such a baby?
No.
You're a woman, Thea.
Oh, Andy, you mustn't rush into marrying this English girl.
If you don't mind, I think I'll take you home now, Thea.
What's the matter?
Are you afraid to talk about her? No, I prefer not to. Afraid to disturb your
dream? Oh, shut up, dear.
It will be different when you see her.
Why is everyone so confoundedly determined to run my life for me? Rusty,
you, your mother, the whole of Valaba knows more about Alice than I do. And
you all seem to know what's best for me.
You want me to mind my own business, don't you?
Yes.
All right, I'm sorry.
Goodbye.
Good morning, Nimrod.
Good morning, Uncle.
Good morning, George.
How are you this morning? How do you do?
Yes, very nice.
Okay.
I think I'll take the rifle this morning, Nimrod. I want you to stay here
and... But, of course, we'll keep watch for the crocodiles.
Crocodiles are going to get a surprise this morning.
You awake, Alice?
Go away.
Come on, put your swimming suit on and bring a towel.
I'm not going swimming with you.
Well, we'll see.
Morning, Peter.
Who are you talking to?
Oh, just an old friend of mine.
Well, he's certainly in a hurry for that swim. You, how could you?
Morning.
Oh, stop looking at me like that with a stupid expression on your face. I'm
sorry, but I can't help it.
Really,
Rusty, you are the most... I am the most hungry man. Now go on, go and put your
bathing suit on.
I'm on my way to camp two, will you?
We'll be at camp two quite soon after lunch.
Well, aren't you grateful to my friend Peter the porcupine?
It was the best swim I ever had.
But I still think that you are a wolf.
Oh, come now, Alice, aren't you wolves in the lava?
You know what I mean.
No, I don't.
What do you mean?
I mean that you hated the idea of me and Andrew right from the first.
You still hate it.
This time for different reasons.
You're great fun, Mr. Rusty Miller, but you're wasting your time.
Your job is to take me to Andrew. And don't forget it.
Well, now we've got to break the news to Amos' wife.
Is that her?
Yes, that's her.
Nimrod will tell her. Nimrod!
I
don't
envy him that job.
Oh, he'll tell her slowly and gently in his own way.
Amos and another game guard called Marge share this place.
They've both been away on patrol for about a week.
Oasis and the baby have been here all alone.
She was expecting Amos back today.
Now only March will come back.
It's a lovely baby, but surely he shouldn't be playing in all that dirt.
Oasis is like you.
She doesn't believe it was the Tocalos who attacked Amos either.
Well, then who was it?
Apparently the other game guard, March, has had his eye on her for some time.
And she thinks that he did it?
That's awful if it's true.
She's sitting there thinking out her revenge.
If we don't act quickly, something will happen to March just like it happened to
Amos.
There's March coming up from settlement now.
What was all that about? His story
is...
He says he's on his way back from a four days patrol.
All he just heard about Amos.
Well, Oasis certainly doesn't believe his story.
She's just been laying a curse on him.
Won't do her much good.
No, but she's going down to the crawl to buy a paper lion off the witch doctor.
Within a year, March could be dead.
I'll have lost a good game guard if he was innocent.
Oh, Rusty, surely you're not that superstitious.
I've seen it happen before.
Greetings,
great elephant.
My brother tells me your boys are going back to work.
They are working.
The Togolos that attacked Amos?
It was not the Togolos.
Who was it?
Was it Marge?
Well then, to prevent an injustice being done, you've got to speak to Oasis.
She's trying to put the spell of a paper lion on him.
The guilty will be punished.
I promise you now, as I promised your brother, I'll rid myself of all
evil. My eyes will be my punishment.
Neither the spell of the witch doctor nor the healing knife of the white
doctor can save them now.
Yes.
He's been involved somehow. Now he's trying to make up for it.
What do you think he's saying to her?
He's telling her to lay off March.
Do you think he's telling her who's the guilty one?
I think so.
We won't know till something happens again.
Either here in the crawl or down in the lava.
That's the way it is.
I'm going to check.
You'll never see her again.
She's safe from you.
Thea! You must help me.
It's too late now.
Sooner or later you had to use that whip.
It will not help to hit me too.
Have I ever used this on you?
Have I ever threatened you?
You should get your tocolosh to blind me and cut out my tongue.
Well,
this is where I live.
Where you'll meet Andy at last.
We call it camp too.
I never expected anything like this.
This way?
What did you expect?
Mud floors and skins on the wall?
old Andy was right.
What do you mean?
I don't know how he knew it, but you do fit in here.
You really seem to belong in Villarba.
Thank you.
You shouldn't be very long now.
I'll never forget these last two days.
Well, I hope you won't, Alice, but...
You may have to.
You mean Andrew?
Yes, I mean Andrew.
Good evening, Ron.
Rusty, something terrible's happened to Andrew.
What's happened?
I don't know.
His car's turned over.
There's a snake and no sign of Andrew anywhere.
You must help me to find him.
Where was this?
Above the post.
Nimrod! Are you coming too?
Hey Nimrod, tell your boys to get cracking on this fire. You girls stay up
here at the jeep.
Yes, he could have been.
Well, if he was, he'd have made for the post down there, that's for sure.
Down there and look for Boss Andy.
I'll have to stay here.
He's probably hurt. Wait for me. Come with me. We need all hands to get this
under control.
um um
Bye.
We know where the fire started and Rusty is fighting it with all the labor
available.
No news of Andrew?
No, nothing yet. We'd better get help from the settlement, Tom. And search
area 27.
The fire is moving that way.
Just now I saw the horse running away. Where?
Over there. Well, he must be somewhere in the bush.
Hey, what's that up in the tree?
Come on.
It's Andrew.
Take it easy, Andy.
We'll get you down.
Just let yourself go.
You do what you can for him. Get him out of here as soon as possible.
Andrew, you're safe. You're with Rusty and Alice.
Andrew, it's Alice. I'm here.
Andrew?
Nimrod helped me to move him.
Jacks in one.
Come on.
Three kings, not enough.
If only we could get a doctor.
What's the matter with Alice?
Well, she's not a doctor.
Three aces.
Your eyes are clean.
Never told me.
Well, you can't write everything in letters.
It's quite true.
Can't.
Oh, I can't play this game any longer.
Oh, you're right. It's a stupid game anyway.
Why don't you switch to cards?
You know something, Rusty?
She's very efficient.
It's about time for the radio call.
Is it?
I'll go and stand by.
Andrew, why can't you tell her?
Do you enjoy yourself?
No, but it's interesting.
Interesting? It's impossible.
You must tell her.
I've given my word, Juno.
I could kill you with my bare hands.
They always dance to celebrate the raid.
And he's just got to make up his mind.
Oh, Rusty, we can't ask him to now.
Anandili's better anyway.
Have you noticed, Theo, the way she looks at him?
What?
What are you trying to say? There's something...
Yes, of course she's still here, Sergeant. How do you expect anybody to
move in all this rage? Over. Can I talk to her? Over.
Sure you can talk to her.
What is it? What I have to say to Miss Lang is only for her, I'm afraid.
Sergeant Fanfake wants you on the radio.
Alice Lang speaking.
Over. Oh, Miss Lang, when the roads are clear, will you be coming back to Dykus
Drift?
Well, no, I don't think I will. Why? Is it something urgent?
If you don't come to us, I'm afraid we'll have to come to you.
Well, what do you want me for?
Mrs. Harriet Carver has made serious allegations in England which require a
statement from you.
From me? But I don't understand.
Well, they've got to be answered.
I see.
All right, I'll come as soon as I can.
Thank you, Miss Lang. We expect you.
Oh, I shouldn't worry. It's probably just somebody being officious. No, it's
not.
It's my half-sister, Harriet. She wants to spoil everything for me.
Can I help?
No.
Nobody can help.
I don't realize what you're asking, Thea.
I do.
Better than you.
You can't get happiness by making someone else miserable.
But you're making everybody miserable.
Where's Alice now?
In her room, I suppose.
Do you want her?
Yeah.
I think it's time we had a bit of a chat.
All right.
I'll go and find her.
You have been with him.
You went to be alone with him.
You don't understand.
I do. I do understand everything.
Thea, aren't you behaving rather like a child?
A child?
You could not wait.
You just could not wait to come and take Andrew from me. Thea, shut up. I'm not
going to shut up any longer. You don't know what you're talking about.
You don't love him.
And you're still planning to marry him.
I don't know what I'm going to do.
But Rusty, you and Rusty. Theo, why can't you leave me alone?
Tell Andrew the truth.
It's as simple as that. But I can't.
It's not as simple as that.
If Andrew chooses me in spite of everything, what else is there for me to
do? I don't understand.
I just don't understand.
I won't stay here.
You are also horrible.
And he's gone... gone chasing after fear.
Oh, it's no use, Rusty. I wish I'd never come to Villarba.
Hey, what's the matter?
You still worried about the police?
Oh, come on.
Harriet's always hated me.
She was always jealous that Mother only wanted me beside her.
I did everything for my mother.
I can just imagine the sort of story she's building up against me.
Well, what could she say?
It's quite easy for her.
The doctor trusted me with all her treatment.
I used to give her all her injections every day.
I'm sure that Harriet's saying that I... What, that you made a mistake?
Rusty, do you realize I can stand...
Alice, I'm sure that you've never done anything wrong in your life.
Anyway, we'll fight it together.
They'll send me back to England.
Well, whatever happens and wherever you have to go.
Thank you.
There!
Where are you going?
There!
That's where I'm going.
And what about me?
Someone else is going to live there too. Reverse.
Yesterday she wore pigtails.
Reverse.
Tell Boss Tom to take it. We'd better start for Dyker's Drift straight away.
It's Sergeant von Wegenkosse. He says it's very important.
We're all very sorry you have to go, miss.
I'm sorry too, Nimrod.
Oh, go ahead, Sergeant.
Here's the message.
Official investigations on Mrs. Lang's death completely exonerates Alice Lang.
Stop. No further police action necessary.
Alice!
Alice!
Alice! Alice,
it's the most wonderful news.
Oh, Rusty, what news? Go on, give it.
Rusty, what news?
So, uh...
It's not a thing to worry about.
Oh, Russ.
Why are we going to Dyker's Drift, then?
Why not?
We're going to break the news to old Andy about us and, um, fix a double
wedding.
What our tomorrow will bring If our love is our winter or spring Not the
sun in the morning Nor the stars in the evening Nor the moon by night
Nor the moon by night
