This young
boy that has been plucked prematurely from the
earth's womb, before he was able to know
all the wonders that are our Lord's, is
knowing others.
The mysterious, beauteous panorama of heaven, in which
we will all be allowed to view.
He is enveloped now in the blissful quietude
of eternity.
He is fortunate that his eyes have been
closed forever, so that he cannot see the
grieving loved ones that he has left behind.
He can forget the strife and turmoil that
plagues our very existence.
But he is not alone.
He has gone to join the greater populations
that inhabits the most glorious of all God's
countries.
His soul can roam freely around the world
and transcend any vision that our mortal minds
can conjure.
He lives in peace and quiet in God's
home now.
Let us pray.
For he that is dead is freed from
sin.
Now if we be dead with Christ, we
believe that we shall also live with him.
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead,
dieth no more.
Death hath no more dominion over him.
For in that he dies, he died unto
sin once.
But in that he liveth, he liveth unto
God.
Likewise, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead
indeed unto sin, but alive unto God.
You see the girl?
Yeah.
How is she?
Not too good.
You talk to her?
She came around for about a half hour.
Could she tell you anything?
She could, but she wouldn't.
Same as the others.
Have you talked to her parents?
I went through a whole hysterical scene with
her father over at Bay City.
Are you ready for this, Mr. Mann?
It's our fault as usual.
I think he's right, Otis.
The problem is right here in Oakdale.
And furthermore, it comes from your high school.
Now, Arthur, that is not true.
How do we know that the girl from
Bay City didn't give it to our boy?
What the hell does that have to do
with it?
A boy smoked it.
He's dead.
A pedestrian's dead.
And the pretty girls die.
Now, just a minute.
You're the chief of police.
That's your job, not mine.
Now, look, it's everybody's responsibility.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
I just want him to do his share.
Hell, he's got those kids there six hours
a day.
If you'd just get the tighter security.
Will you give me a suggestion and I'll
follow it.
Gentlemen, please.
Hey, Jordan.
Hold it.
Okay, Johnny, let me see you hit it.
Now, really throw your full weight into it.
Okay?
Okay.
Ready, set, hit it.
Hey!
You okay?
Yeah, coach.
Jordan, that was real dumb.
Gosh darn it, Mr. Blake.
You know, I realize now that that was
dumb.
I'm gonna really try hard to be clean
cut, really worry about my fellow...
Jordan, don't try to put me on.
Just don't let it happen again, okay?
I'll go get cleaned up.
Fellas, hit the showers.
Jordan, come here.
Yeah, coach?
You know, I've just about had it with
you.
One more stunt like that and...
And what?
Huh?
You gonna threaten to kick me off the
team again?
Fine.
Let me tell my boys.
I didn't say I was gonna kick you
off the team.
Oh, uh, what exactly was it you were
gonna tell me?
Just that it was a stupid thing to
do.
Stupid!
And somebody could have gotten hurt.
And, uh, just knock it off.
Is that all?
Yeah.
That's all.
What's that all about?
Oh, it's just that damn Bates kid.
I'd hate to take that crap from him.
Then why do you?
I have no choice.
No choice?
If he doesn't straighten up, kick him off
the team, suspend him.
Oh, sure.
Kick him off the team.
If he leaves, four others leave with him.
They're our key players.
We got no team.
With no team, we lose ball games.
Then I start worrying about my job.
I'm a little too old for that.
Look, you're an art teacher.
This is only part-time for you.
You've only been here a few months.
Well, anyway, uh, that's how it is.
Could I join this fun group?
Sure, Roger.
Well, Harry, I see you've had another session
with your unpleasant prize bulls.
What do you mean?
You break out around your neck whenever you're
bugged.
Uh, what are you talking about?
I'll prove it to you.
Come over to biology, too.
In fact, come over this afternoon.
I'm dissecting a teenager.
I hope it's Jordan Bates.
Aha, Jordan Bates.
He got to you again.
Yeah, well, that's because I'm concerned about my
students.
No, you're concerned about your team, not your
students.
Why don't you do what I do?
I go home and clickety-click, turn them
off.
It's the only way to go.
Right, Phil?
Phil?
I'm sorry.
Oh, Ellie Holden, huh?
You want some advice?
Forget it.
Look at me.
I'm gorgeous.
I was up to bat a few times.
Touched first, second, third.
I couldn't get home.
Maybe she prefers football.
Okay, try.
I'm not telling you not to try.
Keep going.
Bye-bye.
Hi, Ellie.
You're beautiful.
Thank you.
I think you know everybody.
Roger, Mr. Blake.
Ellie, do you bowl?
I'm not very good at it.
You like it?
Yes.
Well, Angela and I are going tonight.
Would you like to make it a foursome?
With Phil here.
Okay, it might be fun.
Great.
I'll pick you up.
Oh, I'll meet you there.
I know where it is.
About seven.
All right.
See you then.
Hey, Harry.
Thank you.
Oh, Shorty.
Who else is going to grab you like
that, huh?
Going to meet me tonight?
Well, sure.
Don't I always?
Oh, you heard about the girl dying, didn't
you?
Yeah, I heard.
Will that blow the deal with the Bay
City boys?
I hope not.
I just spent all their money.
You have enough for tonight?
Enough.
Hey, Jordan, can I talk to you for
a minute?
Whatever you want, the answer's no, man.
Hey, really, Jordan.
I heard you were having qualification runs for
membership, and I just want to, you know,
qualify.
You know what it takes to qualify?
What do you mean?
Well, brains and imagination, but mostly guts.
Why don't you go play in your sandpile,
boy?
But if I can qualify, I can run
for the initiation.
I mean, you can't change the rules.
Hey, Jer, we'll see you later, huh?
Well, now let's see what your budding Michelangelos
are doing.
What do you think?
Well, it's interesting.
I think so, too.
But I must admit, this is my kind
of art.
Yes, I'd be proud to hang that picture
in my home.
Sold, $250.
It's a good painting, but it's photographic.
It doesn't display the imagination that Jerry Blackburn's
painting shows.
You see, Jerry has used cassine with great
feeling.
I mean, the entire design shows deep sensitivity.
Hey, Jerry.
Say, what do you think you're doing?
Don't blame the boy.
It was my fault.
Well, there's no excuse for that kind of
behavior.
You're right, Mr. Parlow, and I'll handle it.
I'll see you tomorrow morning at nine, okay?
Very well.
Jerry?
Jerry?
Hey, Jerry, you hear me?
Hey, Jerry?
Jerry, are you all right?
I'm okay, Pop.
Yeah, that's some view out there, huh?
I bet you that's the best looking horizon
in the whole neighborhood.
Jerry, are you sure you're okay?
I told you I'm fine.
Well, I bet you need some money.
A couple dollars.
Here, somewhere.
I thought I had a couple dollars.
I don't need any money, Pop.
No, it's here.
Oh, hey, Jerry, I know what I did
with it.
I got us a surprise for tonight.
We got a nice, big, juicy roast, Jerry.
That's what I did with the money.
To do that, I'll make us a nice
salad, huh?
And maybe we'll have some wine.
You're old enough.
Just the two of us.
Your mother's working late again.
Just the two of us, Jerry, what do
you say?
Doesn't that sound like fun?
Sorry, I won't be home.
Well, shall I wrap it, or are you
just browsing?
Oh, hi, Susan.
No, I was just killing time, waiting for
my date.
Where are you going?
I'm going to meet Jordy and the guys
at the old picnic grounds.
Susan, could you do me a favor?
Like what?
Would you talk to Jordan about me?
I don't think it'll do any good.
But could you just try?
It's important to me.
You see, I know he thinks I'm chicken,
and I'm not.
I'll do anything to get in, and you
just tell him that.
I don't know, Jerry.
We'll see.
Susan, I'm not really waiting for a date.
I know.
So
what the hell is that?
Now, what's he doing here?
How'd he find us?
Oh, I think that's my fault.
I told him we'd be here.
You stupid...
I'm sorry, Jordy.
I felt sorry for him.
He wants in so bad.
Yeah, but we don't want him.
Well, why don't you at least let him
try?
He'll never pass the test anyway.
That way you'll get him off your back.
We could have some fun with him.
That would be a ball.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's a good idea.
Hey, kid!
Come here.
Come here!
It's our, uh...
It's our groovy buddy, guys.
What are you doing?
Just what you wanted, honey.
Watch.
Welcome.
Anything else?
No, thank you very much.
Well, we've been together about four and a
half hours, and all I know is your
name is Ellie Holden.
You've taught history for a year and a
half here.
You're 23.
Beautiful.
And a rotten bowler.
Now fill me in on the rest.
Well, that's about it.
Come on, I've never met a girl who
doesn't like to talk about herself.
Maybe I'm the exception.
So I've become sort of a nomad, I
guess.
Traveling from place to place, trying to find
a place that would really do him some
good.
How old is your father?
He's only 50.
But the tuberculosis has made him look at
least 70.
In fact, I'm driving up to see him
this Sunday.
Would you like me to drive you up,
huh?
We could make it a day.
Oh, no, thanks.
It's only about 70 miles.
Yeah, but I'd love to get out in
the country a little.
Why not?
Well...
I'll pick you up at nine, okay?
I don't think you would...
Good.
Nine it is.
I'm not too pushy, am I?
It's getting late.
Here, are
you all right?
Yeah.
I'm sick.
Well, what's going on?
Who were those kids?
Nothing.
Come on, get in the car.
Try and get this down.
Thanks.
You've been drinking?
You've been smoking pot?
No.
No, why do you say that?
No, when I smoked it, I got sick
as hell.
Hey, this is some pad.
Teacher doesn't make much money, you know.
Oh, no, I mean, I like it.
Did you do these paintings?
Yeah.
The bad ones.
That's why I teach.
I think you dropped something.
Oh, yeah, thanks.
I guess the string broke.
Is that your girl?
What?
Mary Jane.
Oh, no, no, it's, uh...
It's kind of a club.
I don't really belong to it yet.
I had it made anyway.
Did you do that one?
Yeah, that's mine.
Don't you think it shows, uh, great feeling
and deep sensitivity?
Hey, I'm sorry about that scene.
That was dumb.
That's okay, Jer.
Listen, I think you misunderstood what I said.
Sensitivity isn't really bad, you know.
All it is, is being aware and capable
of appreciating the beautiful as well as the
ugly.
A lot of people misconstrue that.
They think being, uh, sensitive is being less
masculine.
Yeah, but I didn't say that.
Oh, we all go through it.
We have self-doubt.
But, uh, eventually we find out who we
are.
Yeah, but what if you don't like who
you are?
I mean, I don't seem to fit in
anywhere.
Everybody fits in somewhere, Jer.
I wouldn't worry about it.
You feeling any better?
Yeah, a little.
I'll take you home.
Well, if you ever want to hide somewhere,
uh, feel free.
Just drop in, and if there's anything I
can do, I will.
Gentlemen, I think we can begin now.
Mr. Blake, I don't think you've met our
mayor, Mr. Ford.
Mr. Blake.
Nice meeting you, sir.
Our chief of police, Mr. Mosley.
Good morning.
Good morning to you.
I know it's rather unusual to ask you
to come in on a Saturday like this,
but the circumstances involved are rather unusual.
Now, you've all read the papers.
I'm sure you're aware of the growing problem
facing us here in Oakdale.
Marijuana.
There have been three deaths.
Maynard, I think we're all aware of this.
We have asked you four gentlemen here because
you represent a cross-section of the faculty.
Now, you seem to be popular with the
students, and frankly, we need your help.
Yes, the police seem to have been relatively
ineffective.
Now, now, Maynard, the police have done the
best they can, but they can't reach these
young people as well as you men.
What can we do?
In what way can we help?
Well, that's what we're here to decide.
I'll tell you, if I caught one of
those kids smoking it, I'd report it to
the police at once.
I can guarantee you one thing.
None of my boys smoke it.
How do you know?
Well, I can tell when a kid's on
dope.
Marijuana is not dope.
Well, that may be, but their their eyes
get funny and they act weird and crazy.
Oh, they may seem giddy.
They may appear excessively relaxed.
Sort of like they're drunk?
Yes.
Yes, in a way.
Then what's wrong with it?
Well, I'll tell you what's wrong with it.
It spreads like cancer.
First, it's marijuana.
Then it's LSD and STP.
Then it's heroin and cocaine.
You're saying that marijuana leads to the the
hard stuff?
Well, the big time scientists say no.
But statistics show that every hardcore addict started
with marijuana.
Now, can I tell you something?
We picked up three kids in possession of
marijuana.
And do you know how old they were?
Twelve and thirteen and flying high.
Where would a twelve-year-old get marijuana?
From their older brothers and sisters who attend
this high school.
Oh, come on.
It happens to be true, Mr. Braxton.
Oh, they don't do it maliciously.
They just don't think there's anything wrong with
it.
So you can see what we're up against.
Why come to us?
Why not go to the parents?
Well, there's another dead end, Mr. Campbell.
They're even less cooperative than the children because
they blind themselves to the possibility that their
kids can be smoking that garbage.
In other words, the kids turn on and
the parents turn off.
That's right.
So there we are.
Well, all I can do is tell you
if I see any of the kids acting
differently.
Well, that might help.
They can't all be smoking it.
No, not this week.
But next week, who knows?
We don't want the kids.
We want to get at the source.
And the only way we can do that
is through the kids.
That's right.
Cut off the head of the snake and
the rest of the body dies.
Are there any other suggestions?
What else can we do?
We can't follow them home or eavesdrop on
their conversations.
Why not?
What if I overheard something?
Anything unusual should be reported to me.
Or you might have students you can trust
who might offer valuable information.
Keep their eyes and ears open.
Wait a minute.
What you're saying is that you want us
to spy on these kids and enlist the
help of other students to think on their
classmates.
I think that's a little strong, Mr. Blayton.
Well, I guess that's it.
We will do anything to eradicate this problem.
So what do you say?
I'll do anything I can.
Count me in.
Yeah, why not?
Good.
Then we're all in agreement.
Not quite.
What do you mean, Mr. Blake?
I'm afraid I can't go along with you
on this.
Why not?
Well, before you hit the ceiling, let me
explain.
I'm a teacher.
I'm not a spy.
I don't believe in these tactics.
You're turning teacher against student.
And worst of all, student against student.
I've been here three months and it's taken
me all this time to win the trust
of some of these kids.
I don't want to destroy it now.
I feel it's wrong to ask us to
do this.
Blake, you're out of line.
Hold it, Maynard.
Let me ask you something, Blake.
What's more important to you, their trust or
their health?
Their health?
I've read about marijuana.
It does less damage than cigarettes or alcohol.
The worst thing I know about it, that
it's illegal.
You sound like you're defending it.
No.
I don't condemn it and I don't condone
it.
I don't know that much about it.
I'll bet you don't.
You've probably smoked it yourself.
Well, have you?
Otis, that isn't necessary.
Wait a minute.
I have smoked it.
What?
Do you admit it?
Sure, you do a lot of crazy things
in college.
Well, that's great.
Here, we're counting on this punk to help
us.
And he turns out to be a dope
fiend himself.
Now, there's a great example for the kids.
Dope fiend?
Well, 23 skidoo.
I tried it once, big deal.
Weren't you ever curious?
I'm going to be curious about you from
now on.
And you can believe that, mister.
I'll remember that.
Is that all, sir?
I believe so.
Blake, let me ask you something.
Why in hell did you admit you smoked
marijuana?
Because I thought you gentlemen were intelligent enough
to view it in its proper perspective.
I recommend his dismissal at once.
On what grounds?
Will you heard him admit that he...
Oakdale High has received enough bad publicity.
I trust all you gentlemen have the good
sense to keep this incident quiet.
We'll deal with Mr. Blake later.
Fill them up regular, huh?
Flashlight.
Okay, put the hose down.
Hey, come on.
I don't need the horseplay.
Hey, put down the air hose.
That's not a toy.
Come on, put that down.
Will you stop pouring the water?
Hey, guys, come on, cut it out.
Hey, come on.
All right.
Cut it out, you kids.
Come on.
Hey, we're sorry, babe.
Let me dry you off.
Hold on.
Come on, cut it out.
All right, knock it off now.
Hey, hey.
Holy, man.
You're getting a little testy, aren't you?
You owe me $4.23. Here's
a five, huh?
Keep the change.
Thank you, sir.
Come again.
Hey, let's cut, huh?
Animals.
Ten gallons regular, please.
Yes, sir.
What time do I have to see your
dad?
Between 2 and 4.
Oh, that'll give us plenty of time.
We can stop along the way and get
something to eat.
I'm not too hungry.
You're never hungry.
I don't have much of an appetite, but
I'll sit with you.
Ah, you'll wait till later.
Is there something wrong?
Nah, I'm sorry.
Just a little buggy today.
Why?
What's the matter?
Well, that meeting yesterday.
Yeah.
I'd open my big mouth.
What was it about?
They're concerned about this marijuana business.
What are they going to do about it?
I don't know.
We didn't exactly see eye to eye on
that.
Wow.
You guys waiting for something?
Yeah.
Yeah, come on, let's go.
Come on.
You got some papers?
Yeah, it's here.
Wow.
Come on.
Hey.
Come on.
One, two, one, two.
Don't get sick this time, huh?
You sure you wouldn't like me to come
up with you?
Oh, I don't think so.
It won't be long.
It's your last shot at it, boy.
You know what you gotta do?
Yeah, I gotta get five things totaling $20.
Yeah.
And if you get caught, we don't know
you.
Okay?
Yeah.
Just cool it.
You'll be okay.
Yeah, you'll be just fine.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Can I help you?
What?
Can I help you?
I was just looking.
Then what are you doing with that watch?
I was just looking at it.
Oh, yeah?
Hey, isn't this a cute thing?
Oh, I love this.
You like it?
What are you doing there, kid?
Stop that.
Stop that, kid.
Put that back.
Oh, yes.
Put those hats...
Now, put these things back.
Now, look.
Leave the hats.
Now, stop.
Put the glasses back, please.
Come on.
What are you doing?
Oh, he's beautiful.
Look at him.
He's calling the cops.
Hey, put everything back.
Come on.
Come on, let's go.
Hey, Jordan, look.
I got him.
The watch alone is worth 30 bucks.
You're crazy, man.
You're a thief.
I don't want anything to do with you.
Hey, stop kidding.
What about the club?
We'll talk about it later, huh?
Let's split.
I said later, man.
Yes, I'll hold.
Sergeant Johnson,
can I help you?
Hello?
How is he?
Oh, he's much better.
Doesn't he like fruit?
He's on a special diet.
He can't eat it.
We can.
Well, it's the big, fat boys from Bay
City.
Shelby?
Can we see you a minute?
Be back in a minute.
You out here looking for us?
No, just driving around.
Well, you should be.
You owe us something, don't you?
Yeah.
Expecting a shipment any time.
It is the gold stuff, isn't it?
Yeah.
Acapulco gold, man.
The best.
It better be for what we paid you.
Look, it's coming, I told you.
Soon as I get some, I'll lay it
on you.
You stoned?
A little bit.
You guys want to turn on?
I got some more.
Nah, we don't dig that crabgrass.
We're waiting for the gold.
Now, you wouldn't let us down, would you?
No chance.
Okay.
We'll be hearing from you.
Let's go.
You're doing it all wrong.
No, I suppose you're an expert.
I was stone skipping champion of Wisconsin.
And I retired undefeated.
Now watch.
It's all in the wrist.
Must be soft water.
You were holding it all wrong.
How's this?
You'd better take me home.
Ellie, I'm sorry.
Look, whatever you heard about me from Roger
Campbell, it just isn't true.
Ellie, I didn't hear anything.
All right, so I made a pass.
You can't kill me for that.
Come on, take me home.
Well, come in.
Do you know what this is?
No, sir.
Well, you should know.
Well, what is it?
Cannabis sativa.
Cannabis sativa?
Marijuana.
Marijuana?
Growing behind the machine shop.
You know, I'd like to see Reardon's face.
Whatever gave you that idea, Ollie?
I just wondered what would Geordie really appreciate.
Then I grew it this summer.
I was a little nervous, you know.
I didn't know if they were going to
find it.
Well, do I qualify?
Oh, baby, you're in.
As far as the initiation, that is.
What do you think they're going to do
with it?
Well, first, Parlo checks it for fingerprints.
Then he goes in the closet and he
smokes it.
All right.
Then he emerges as...
Look, up in the sky.
Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
It's Major Parlo, our high school principal.
Get it, man!
What are you doing tonight, Ollie?
Oh, nothing, man.
Why?
What's happening?
Well, I just got a fresh batch in.
We're going to have us a little party.
Yeah?
Where?
The amusement park out on Route 6.
Oh, yeah, I know the one.
What time?
About 9.
Okay?
Groovy.
Well, listen, I got to cut out.
I'll see you out there.
Bring money.
Let's split.
Yes.
Well, looky, looky.
It's the cat burglar of Oakdale High.
What are you doing here?
I was just hanging around.
Hey, Jordan, isn't the amusement park closed on
Mondays?
You're a fountain of information.
Oh, I get it.
That's why you're going, because it's closed, huh?
He's not a fountain.
He's a drip.
Hey, can I come?
You got a car?
No.
Well, that's good.
It's a 35-mile hike.
Oh, maybe he could fly up.
He's still busy playing with his paint pots.
Yes, mixing his cerise with vermilion and pews.
Shut up.
Hey, where'd you get this?
What is it?
It's one of our medals.
It's mine.
I had it made up.
Now, nobody...
but nobody wears one of these until I
say so.
If I ever catch you with this around
your neck again...
well, I'm gonna hang you with it.
Ha-ha-ha!
Look, I don't know who started it, and
I don't want to.
Settle these arguments after school.
Now get out of here!
What's with you and those guys, Jerry?
It's not important.
Hey, look, I gotta go.
The offer still goes.
If you need anything.
I'll see you later, huh?
Hi, Harry.
Bill.
What's with you today?
Everybody's pouting.
What do you mean?
Well, you're not your warm, old, friendly self.
Can you blame me after that scene in
the office?
What's that got to do with you and
me?
Everything.
Okay, Harry.
A word of advice.
Just be careful.
I have no etchings, some great records, and
no ulterior motives.
What do you say, Ellie?
All I meant was...
Okay, Ellie, I'm sorry I called.
Lean over
the hood, please.
I said lean.
Are you fellow Blake?
Yeah, what's this all about?
Let me see your driver's license.
It's in my apartment.
Why are you driving without a license?
I wasn't driving.
Hey, Bill.
I think I found something.
A package or pot.
Police officer on the critical list, but you
say you weren't driving.
You were home, painting, alone, with no witnesses.
You know, Blake, for an educated man, a
schoolteacher, you could do a lot better than
that.
Can't you spot a frame up when you
see it?
Someone took my car and dumped that junk
in it.
Oh, sure they did.
We're all against you.
What is it you college fellas call it?
Paranoia?
Take Mr. Blake to his suite.
Wait a minute.
I'm entitled to one phone call.
Put him in a boat van with the
rest of his buddies.
Oh, Blake, 23 skidoo.
How much longer do we have to wait
here?
Let's get going.
Give him another five minutes and then I'm
cutting.
Billy's all hipped up about it.
He says it's the wildest hunt yet.
It better be.
Hey, Jordan.
What do they want?
I don't know.
What's happening, Tobes?
We had a meeting with the other guys,
and we figured you're not gonna deliver, so
we want our money back.
You can't do that.
Stuff's on its way.
We made a deal.
Just hand over the bread.
I don't have it.
Well, you better get it.
Guess we're gonna take our bread and shop
around a little.
You're bluffing, man.
You know I'm the only connection around here.
Okay, uh, when?
It's Monday.
I'll have it by tomorrow night.
Where?
It's gonna be cool.
The old Franklin place.
You know it?
Yeah.
Midnight.
Yeah.
Well?
Oh, you're in.
Hey, man.
What do you want?
Um, you and me are getting out of
here.
What?
Yeah, yeah, we're getting out of here.
I, uh, I got a plan.
Oh.
You, uh, you got a gun?
No.
Well, there goes my plan.
I hate the way that guy sings.
Man, he sings like that all night long.
Drive you crazy.
I won't tell him nothing, man.
Those cards.
Name, rank, and serial number.
That's it.
You sure you don't have a gun?
Got any pot?
Ah!
Ah!
Yeah, doctor, quick!
Endangering the lives of peace officers while resisting
arrest and possession of marijuana.
You've heard the charges.
How do you plead?
Guilty or not guilty?
Guilty.
Not guilty.
Mr. Blake, uh, I see you're without benefit
of counsel.
Would you like the court to appoint someone?
Trial by judge or trial by jury?
Jury.
Well, trial is set for
March 30th.
But that's six months from now.
Bail is set at $5,000.
Pay the bailiff.
Yeah, but I don't have $5,000.
Take him away.
Hey, buddy.
I'm from the NARS bail bond company.
Listen, uh, for 10%, I can have you
out of here in 30 minutes.
I don't have 500.
Six months?
That's a long time.
Too bad about that full calendar.
You know, sometimes they're postponed again, and you
could be here about a year.
But on the other hand, you're level with
us.
It could go a lot easier for you.
What do you want to know exactly?
Same questions we asked you last night.
Who your contacts are, how the stuff is
brought in, and who your customers are.
Then what do you do for me?
Well, I think we can get you off
with a clean slate.
Oh?
How do you do that?
Very easy.
We just tell them that you were working
for us.
Then you get your old job back and
everything.
See, there's nothing to it.
Oh, yeah, I see.
Get a pothead like me and put me
back in that school, teaching those kids, just
to save your job.
You son of a bitch.
Now you listen to me.
I've got a tippy-toe for those kids,
but you're over 21.
I'll break your back, and it won't take
me six months to do it.
Chief, he's out.
Out?
Can I talk to you for a minute?
It's late, I'm tired, and I have a
lot of work to do.
Well, all I want to do is thank
you for bailing me out this morning.
How did you know it was me?
The bail bondsman told me.
Oh.
Well, pay me back when you can.
There's no hurry.
What's the matter with you, anyway?
Don't tell me you believe I'm guilty.
It doesn't matter what I believe.
It's a small town, Phil.
Maybe you're right, Ellie.
Hey, did you see who floated by here?
The guy with this morning's paper.
All right.
You jolly boys want to get back to
practice?
Sure.
Mr. Blake, listen, we'd just like to let
you know that we don't buy that story
about you.
We don't want to be corny, but we
think you're pretty straight.
Thanks, fellas.
Have you seen Jerry Blackburn around?
Last time I saw him, he was in
the locker room.
Thanks again, fellas.
Hi, Jerry.
How's your girlfriend?
Girlfriend?
Mary Jane.
You want to tell me why you took
my car?
Well, who says I took your car?
That medal says you took it.
Where'd you get the marijuana, Jerry?
I didn't do it.
I don't know anything about the marijuana, and
that's the truth.
The marijuana, Jerry.
Why ask me?
Ask someone else.
Ask Jordan.
Jordan Bates?
I didn't say that.
Look, Jerry, you know something, and you're going
to tell me.
Leave me alone!
Take your hands off that boy.
What the hell do you think you're doing?
Listen, Harry...
I listen to nothing.
Now get out of here before I call
the police.
Hey!
Yeah, yeah, anything cold?
Cold.
All right.
He's got the money.
Got any vanilla gold?
You want a pint or a quart?
I paid for a quart.
Oh, yeah.
Jordan, I want to talk to you.
I got to get back to practice.
You're going to answer some questions first.
Hey, you listen, jailbird.
I don't have to answer anything.
Yes, you do.
On the route by Oakdale High.
That would be Jack D'Andrea.
Is he here now?
No, he wasn't feeling very good.
Checked out early.
Could I have his address?
I'm afraid we can't do that.
Listen, this is very important.
I need it.
Are you a cop?
No.
Then no address.
But you don't understand.
Look, I said no.
I meant no.
Now, I think you better get lost, fella.
Hello, operator?
Do you have a number on a Jack
D'Andrea?
Just a moment, sir.
I checked the book.
Maybe he's under a new listing.
Sorry.
I showed no listings until that day.
Oh, nothing.
Thank you.
Look, now you get something straight.
Now that D'Andrea's split, I'm going to
take his place.
I can use the extra bread.
Look, you forget about Blake.
He's no problem.
I'm going to take care of him with
one phone call.
You just don't understand, do you?
Blake took the whole package, and I got
to deliver tonight.
Now, I want more stuff, and I want
it now.
Well, when can you get it?
That's no good.
I want it now.
Okay.
Okay.
I'll figure out something.
If I don't, I'm going to get my
head busted.
Hello?
Hello, is Jordan Bates there?
No, nobody's here.
Is your dad there?
No, nobody's here.
When will they be back?
I don't know.
Jordy just left.
Where did he go?
I think he said to the lake.
Jordy, he's been down there 30 seconds.
He'll drown.
Stop worrying, huh?
You can hold your breath at least 60
seconds.
They made it, didn't they?
Yeah, but he's not them.
Jordy, pull him out.
Hey, Raven.
Go get him.
Harry.
Harry.
That kid catches his breath, uh, you make
sure he smokes it, all of it.
Ash, you know that kid, it'll blow his
head off.
I know.
What's with you?
You almost killed him.
No.
No, I wouldn't do anything like that.
I got big plans for that boy.
He's gonna get me off the hook with
the Bay City boys.
How?
By delivering the stuff for me tonight.
You lost the good stuff.
Yeah.
You mean you're gonna send Jerry up there
with a load of cheap grass?
They'll kill him.
Better him than me.
I'm not even cold anymore.
What am I smoking this time?
Hashish.
You lucky dog.
It's the only way to fly.
Get him ready, huh?
It's time.
Hey, Geordie, can I wear this now?
Sure.
Might bring you luck.
Only got one more thing to do.
Jerry, don't go.
Don't you know what they're doing?
Get up.
Don't you ever do anything like that again.
Look, I don't need you.
Haven't needed you in a long time.
Have fun, fellas.
I did.
Geordie.
Geordie, don't go.
Don't leave me, Geordie.
Don't go.
Don't.
Come on, man, give it a minute.
Geordie.
Get the rope.
Geordie.
Don't do it.
Get off me.
Come on.
Come on.
Hey, don't.
Don't.
Don't.
Don't.
You've got to do something.
What happened?
It's Jerry.
Jerry?
What about Jerry?
Where is he?
Geordi took him to the old Franklin mansion.
He's in trouble.
Franklin.
Where is it?
It's on the other side of town.
Come with me.
Come on.
Just hand him this package.
That's all.
And, uh, you get lonely.
It's Acapulco gold.
Do you understand?
Sure, Jordan.
You gonna be all right?
Yes.
Thank you.
But hurry.
I will.
This your car?
Yeah.
You Philip Blake?
Yes.
Follow us, please.
I can't find anything.
Maybe the phone call was a phony.
I don't think so.
What's going on?
Just following a tip from a public-spirited
citizen.
What the hell you looking for?
Cotton and marijuana that you got hidden away
somewhere.
You're crazy.
I don't have any marijuana.
And you've no right to be here.
Is this car out front?
Yes, sir.
Take it down to the station.
I need that car.
So do we.
We're impounding it.
And have them take it apart bolt by
bolt.
Do you listen to every crank phone call
you get?
When it concerns you, yes.
Let's go, Kirby.
I suppose you've got impound papers.
No.
But if you come down to the station,
they can fix it up for you in
about five minutes.
Hello?
I'm sorry to wake you up, Ellie.
I tried to call, but your line was
busy.
I need your car.
It's an emergency.
My car?
Yeah.
Jerry Blackburn's in trouble.
I gotta find him.
The car keys, Ellie, please.
I don't know where I put them.
Who's in trouble?
Just give me the keys.
Oh, well.
I'll look for them.
Oh.
I got them.
I'll bring it back in the morning.
Where is he?
Who?
Don't play dumb.
You get out of here.
You're killing
him!
Stop!
Now we're gonna find Jerry Blackburn.
And you better pray that he's not hurt.
You're not gonna find any holes in that
arm.
Phil?
Now what?
I just wanna know one thing, Ellie.
Why?
It seemed like a good idea at the
time.
Yeah.
Oh, what do you want?
Once upon a time, a sweet little girl
became a junkie.
What difference does it make?
This is the way I am, and I've
learned to live with it.
All right.
But why infect those kids?
That's where the market is.
If you had my problem, where would you
sell it?
I wouldn't.
That's what I thought.
Unfortunately, that's the difference between us.
I'm truly sorry, Ellie.
Don't be.
He found out.
It was only a matter of time before
the whole town knew.
In a way, I'm glad it's over.
Where's Jordan?
I don't know.
I'm just supposed to give you this.
Man, is he ever out of it.
Yeah, he is.
This isn't the gold.
This stuff has been beefed up with tea,
and it's full of twigs.
That's a carton of crap.
Where's the good stuff?
I don't know.
All right.
What did you do with the rest of
it?
What?
You pulled a switch.
What'd you do with it?
Jordan told me to deliver that.
You better turn around right now.
You're stealing my car, Blake.
You're smart.
You're gonna get out of town tonight.
You know that?
Now, maybe you don't know something, but my
family's got a lot of bread, man.
My old man's a big man in this
town.
Do you know who you are?
You're nothing.
You're nothing.
Look, who do you think they're gonna believe,
huh?
Clay Cut, Jordan Bates, or some pothead teacher.
Are you listening to me?
Look, why do you grab me anyway?
Now, she's the pusher.
You got nothing on me.
Nothing.
You smoke pot.
You push it.
You blackmail to have a crummy affair.
And if Jerry Blackburn's hurt, I just might
kill you myself.
Oh!
We're gonna ask you just once more.
Where's the stuff?
I don't know.
I didn't sell it.
He's gotta be telling the truth.
Let's go.
Jerry?
No!
No!
