[♪♪♪♪♪]

[BELL TOLLING]

The plane! The plane!

[SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY]

[ENGINE REVVING]

-Bye-bye. -ALL: Bye.

[WOMEN GIGGLING]

-Good morning, boss. -Good morning, Tattoo.

Ah, good morning, Julie.

[CHUCKLES] Good morning, Mr. Roarke, Tattoo.

And where is my favorite goddaughter

off to this morning, huh?

Actually, I was thinking.

A whole week of my summer has gone by here with you,

and... [EXHALES]

Yes?

Well, I was wondering if I could start going with you

to the plane dock to help you welcome the guests.

Oh, I see.

Ah, well, actually, that is a distinct possibility,

Julie, but not quite yet.

When you've had a little more seasoning, yes, of course.

Ah, however, I do need your invaluable assistance

in organizing the children's party for this afternoon.

[CHILDREN TALKING INDISTINCTLY]

Oh, I would love it, Mr. Roarke!

I knew I could rely on my favorite godchild.

Oh, you can! You can, uh-- Thanks!

She's a wonderful girl, Tattoo.

I do hope she'll be able to stay with us.

Let's go.

[WOMEN GIGGLING]

-Boss... -ROARKE: Hmm?

TATTOO: There's a lump on the grass.

That's no lump, Tattoo.

I had it created especially for someone

who's coming up in the world.

You mean...

Yes, Tattoo, I had it done for you.

Oh, boss, thank you so much.

Thank you.

Smiles, everyone. Smiles!

[♪♪♪♪♪]

ROARKE: Ah, yes, Mr. Matt Kane.

Television sports analyst

and author of a very successful newspaper column.

After years of helping create sports heroes,

Mr. Kane's fantasy is to become a sports hero himself.

For one weekend, he wants to be a superstar

in a professional basketball team.

But boss, all those guys are 11 foot tall sitting down.

ROARKE: Nevertheless, Mr. Kane believes

that basketball stardom

is the only way he can win the heart of the woman he loves.

Boss, can we do it?

Perhaps.

But Mr. Kane may learn a cruel reality, Tattoo.

That love can be won and lost in the very same moment.

Miss Helen Ross, from Corsicana, Texas.

TATTOO: The guy with her don't look too happy.

ROARKE: Well, that is quite understandable.

His name is Mr. Theodore Kingman,

and he has asked Miss Ross to marry him.

But she has refused... because of a shadow

which darkens her life and which she fears

would doom their marriage.

You see, Miss Ross's fantasy is to go back in time

to see again the young man with whom she shared

an idyllic love affair some eight years ago.

What happened to him?

Captain John Day was a military officer for a foreign government

and reported missing in action in a military operation.

By seeing him again, Miss Ross desperately hopes

to test the romantic passion they once shared

against the reality of her present love for Mr. Kingman.

Well, that should be easy.

Something real and in the present

against an old memory.

ROARKE: Ah, but it's more than a mere memory, Tattoo.

It has grown in her mind over the years to such an extent

that it threatens to destroy her every chance for happiness.

My dear guests, I am Mr. Roarke, your host.

Welcome to Fantasy Island.

[♪♪♪♪♪]

HELEN: If you only knew, Mr. Roarke,

how I feel about actually seeing Johnny again.

Just--

Just to talk to him one more time.

Oh, I do understand your emotions, Miss Ross.

-[HELEN CHUCKLES] -But I must warn you that time

does not stand still for any of us.

There are always changes.

Yes, well... [CHUCKLES]

Yes, for me I understand, but for Johnny...

He's gonna be exactly the way I remember him.

I mean, if I go back in time eight years before he died.

You don't have to do that.

ROARKE: Tattoo is right, Miss Ross.

You will not be going back in time.

Excuse me, Tattoo.

-I won't? -ROARKE: No. You see,

uh, Captain John Day...

did not die.

He is, in fact, living on an island

not far from here at this very moment.

-Johnny is alive? -ROARKE: Yes, Miss Ross.

[GASPS]

No, that can't be!

He-- he would have let me know!

He would have sent word to me! I would have had a letter.

Nevertheless, it's true.

As for explanations, it's better, even necessary,

that Captain Day explain to you himself.

You will be taken to the island where he is

as soon as you are ready.

[SOBS]

HELEN: I'm sorry.

I'll be ready to go.

I'm gonna see if Mr. Kingman is ready.

Yes, Tattoo.

Oh, no. Wait a minute.

No, please.

I-- I know that we discussed Mr. Kingman going with me,

but under the circumstances, I don't...

Please, I don't think I can handle this.

Oh, believe me, Miss Ross, you will find the courage.

Now, as for Mr. Kingman accompanying you,

of course, that is your final decision.

[SIGHS]

Well, I-- I guess it would be right for Ted to go.

[SIGHS]

But at this moment, I'm very confused.

Have faith, Miss Ross.

Have faith that from the heart's most troubled moments

comes the courage... and wisdom

with which to build new happiness.

-[SOBS] But-- -Trust me.

Please trust me.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 1: Good girl! Ginger, we love you.

We love you, Ginger, come on.

MAN 2: Come on, go on, go in. Take him, Ginger, go on.

MAN 1: Don't let him get away with that.

MAN 2: That's it, baby, go on.

-[ALL LAUGH] -MAN 2: Look at that!

MAN 1: Ginger, we love you!

All right, that's enough foolin' around.

Ginger, go sit down and let these guys practice.

Skylar, you're gonna have to learn how to read a fake

better than that if you're gonna make it in the NBA.

Come on, let's see some sweat, you clowns.

Go get 'em, Sky. [CHUCKLES]

-All right, guys! -SKYLAR: Okay, let's get 'em.

MAN 2: There you go! Come on, let's go, let's go.

MAN 3: Ohh! Saved.

I was saved.

MAN 4: Ah, let's go!

-MAN 3: Mine went in. -GINGER: Whoo!

There's the woman I love, Ginger Donovan.

Her father's Red Donovan, the team coach.

So, she's been in big-time basketball all her life.

Which makes you feel that only a basketball star

would have a chance to win her affections.

You saw her going one-on-one with that big rookie,

Skyhook Skylar, like they were made for each other.

I've got some nerve falling for her, don't I?

She's almost a foot taller than I am.

When it comes to love,

attitude is much more ample than-- than altitude.

I couldn't agree with you more, Tattoo.

That's why I take on the big sports stars

and cut 'em down to size in my column.

I overdo it sometimes.

I try not to, but I--

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

I guess I resent being on the outside looking in.

And if I give you the ability to function

inside professional basketball,

do you truly believe that will enable you

to win Ms. Donovan's heart?

GINGER: Come on.

I can't answer that, Mr. Roarke.

I just know I love her,

and I'd do anything to reach her.

Anything.

Tattoo?

MAN 5: Here now. Sink it. Come on, sink it, man.

What's the big deal about a pair of sneakers?

Oh, I assure you they are unique, Mr. Kane.

They feel strange.

They are a device to assist you

in fulfilling your fantasy, Mr. Kane.

But please remember that no device

can assure love or happiness.

For such precious commodities, each of us must look...

inwardly.

Well, if they help make Ginger

see me as a man worth loving, they'll be perfect.

Thanks, Mr. Roarke.

Thanks a lot.

MAN 1: Go shoot 'em.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 1: Hey, way to go! Hey!

[♪♪♪♪♪]

TED: Thank you.

Excuse me, can you give us directions

to the Kulahana Hotel?

[ALL GIGGLE]

Follow the path there.

Thank you.

[BIRDS CHIRPING]

-Helen, are you all right? -[GASPS]

Ted, I don't think I've ever... really told you

how much I appreciate you being so understanding and...

and-- and so very patient.

[SIGHS] Well, I try, darling.

I have to admit, this hasn't been easy.

I know.

I know.

I'm sorry.

But you do realize this is something I have to do.

It's not just for me. It is for us, too.

Maybe you'd better get on with it.

Yes.

MAN: Come on...

MAN 2: Take it, take it!

-Come on! -MAN 3: I got it, make a switch.

There you go. Yeah!

MAN 4: Takin' the shot.

-MAN 2: Ball's up! -MAN 4: Throw it out again.

-MAN 2: Come on. -MAN 4: Okay, be ready.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

RED: Oh, what's with you, Skylar?

That's a no percentage shot from ten feet,

never mind the middle of the court.

The rest of you clowns, you're runnin' around

like a bunch of old ladies with the gout.

Oh, no, this is not my day.

Hello, Red.

Hello, gentlemen.

-MAN 2: Come on. -MAN 3: Yeah.

-MAN 2: Come on. -Hi, Ginger.

Matt, what a surprise.

RED: Listen, if you think you're gonna do another story

on my team, you're crazy.

You can take that poison pen and stick it in your ear.

MAN 2: Yeah! MAN 3: Yeah, huh!

Come on, Red, you know the newspaper game.

They wouldn't print it if I didn't pick on somebody.

I only go after guys who can take it.

Uh-huh, well, today I don't feel like takin' it, all right?

Now, if you'll excuse us.

Come on, you "athletes," it's time for a skull session.

If I can't teach you to move, maybe I can teach you to think.

-Come on, come on. -Wait a minute, Red.

-Ah, wait a minute. -MATT: Red, wait a minute!

I want to try out for the team! MAN 3: Oh, come on.

Matt, Daddy doesn't have much of a sense of humor today.

You ought to wait till team practice improves

before you start kidding about playing on the basketball team.

I'm not kidding, Ginger.

Oh, Matt, you're hysterical.

What about Skyhook Skylar? You don't think he's hysterical.

No, but he's...

Well, Sky's...

Okay, look it, if you think you can beat me,

I'll get Daddy to take a look at you professionally.

Now you're talkin'.

I'll get my shoes on.

Ugh!

Ugh!

How'd you like the moves?

You were fantastic.

Especially for somebody so...

So, short, right?

Maybe I'm really Super Shrimp in disguise.

Matt, I was going to say for somebody so, non-athletic.

I mean, a guy of your background, a writer?

Matt, how come every time we begin to talk,

I feel as though you're pushing me away?

What about Skyhook? Does he push you away, too?

Thanks for the basketball lesson.

Ginger?

Ginger?

Oh, boy.

There I go, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

HELEN: Ted, I think I'm afraid.

TED: Do you want to give it up?

You know I can't do that.

All right.

For what it's worth, I love you, now and forever.

Remember that.

-[THUMPS] -[WOMAN SCREAMS]

-[THUMPING] -[MAN GRUNTING]

[GRUNTS]

MAN 6: Get up again, huh?

-Enough? -Enough.

[SIGHS]

Johnny?

Hi, Helen.

Johnny. [SOBS]

Looks like we both lose.

Uh-huh.

[CLEARS THROAT] Opposing team got the rebound.

What are you doing wrong, Skylar?

Uh, well, I just, you know,

I smothered the outlet pass, and then I was--

No, no, no, no, you drift back to avoid a mismatch.

That's not, uh, you know,

too complicated for you, is it, son?

A-- Oh, boy. [CHUCKLES]

Sorry to interrupt your little kindergarten, Red.

But I suppose Ginger told you

I'm ready for my try-out with the team.

Uh, yeah, she said you had a couple of moves, uh.

You-- you really are kiddin', aren't you?

MATT: No, I'm serious.

I want a chance to show you I can play.

You won't regret it.

Well, no, I'm sure I won't regret it, uh.

Well, all right, three o'clock this afternoon,

you be on the court, and we'll, uh,

we'll take it from there, hmm.

I hope nobody regrets it.

-Hmm, -[RED CHUCKLES]

I think Mr. Poison Pen

has finally, uh, just taken one step too many.

[ALL LAUGH, SPEAK INDISTINCTLY]

He has been back-biting and fault-finding us for years.

And now he's come over into our camp,

and I want him humiliated.

But, Daddy, won't not making the team be punishment enough?

Not near enough.

No, it's time he had a taste of his own medicine.

[INSTINCT CHATTER]

RED: Let's get some practice, guys.

I want you to clobber that little shrimp

this afternoon. Come on.

-But Daddy, Matt could get hurt. -Oh, come on, don't worry.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 1: Take a shower and let's just...

MAN 2: Oh, what a day it's been.

That Ginger sure is a wonderful girl.

I just wish she liked me as much as she likes that Matt Kane.

How do you know she doesn't?

Ah, come on. I mean, look at me.

I'm a stork with, uh, gym shoes on.

I see a very nice man, who just happen to be very tall.

You mean, you're not gonna ask me how the weather is up here?

No, not if you don't ask me how it is

to look at knee caps all day long.

[SKYLAR CHUCKLING]

I guess we kind of have the same problem,

only in reverse, don't we?

We don't have a problem.

If people cannot see us the way we really are,

well, they're the one with the problem.

Yeah.

I just never looked at it that way.

You make a lot of sense, Tattoo.

Oh, thank you.

Let's go see the game.

Let's go.

Johnny, what happened?

Why didn't you try to find me?

Why didn't you call or write? Something.

Does that matter now?

Matter? It was eight years.

I lived with eight years of torture.

-Of doubt, the pain. -I'm sorry.

It's a long story.

Well, I want to hear it. I've gotta know.

You see, uh, a lot of it, I still can't talk about.

It was a...

intelligence operation, you know.

Secrecy vows and all of that kind of thing.

Well, that's all in the past, if--

You're here now, and so am I.

Johnny, it was eight years out of our lives.

I know, I know.

I was captured.

I was held a prisoner a long time.

A long, long time.

I don't like talking about that.

I finally escaped.

Well, when you escaped,

why didn't you have someone get word to me?

Now, hey, hey, hold it.

There were reasons.

There's a lot of time for all your questions.

What matters is now, right?

We've got each other again.

We've got today.

We've got tomorrow, we've got the day after that.

It's not that simple.

You just don't understand.

Johnny, I have been true to you and your memory for eight years.

There has never been anybody else, never.

JOHN: Not even that guy that was with you at the hotel?

HELEN: No.

His name is Ted Kingman, and he-- he wants to marry me.

Well, that's his problem.

I've got you back now.

It's not that simple! And when you escaped,

why didn't you try to find me? Tell me.

Hey, look at it my way, will you? I was locked up.

Time went by, years.

There was no future. There was no anything.

I guess...

I just gave up any dreams about you...

or any other woman.

HELEN: Oh, Johnny.

Johnny.

[♪♪♪♪♪]

[WOMAN GRUNTS] Liar!

-JOHN: Mara, stop it! -Say I'm not a woman, huh?

Just shut up! [SCREAMS] Hey! Oh!

Oh! Wait.

Oh, here.

Oh, forgive me, baby. I-- I love you.

Well, I told my guys not to hold back, Kane.

You could get stomped on.

If you want to back out, now's the time to say so.

Matt! Matt, be careful!

Let's play ball.

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

MAN 1: Oh, come on, over here. That's good, move it over here.

All right, all right. Over here, over here.

Hey, hey, hey, hey. Take it easy, take it easy.

-MAN 1: Okay, come on now. Let's go. -All right!

MAN 2: Hey, come on, now.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 2: Over here, over here. Come on, now.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 1: Come on now. He's really good.

Hey, hey...

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 1: Come on, now, let's go.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

MAN 2: Hey!

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

Well, Matt, I want to apologize.

I-- I take back everything I ever said about you.

Everything I ever thought about you.

That was the best exhibition of basketball knowledge

and execution that I have ever seen.

So, does this mean I made the team?

Well, uh, not exactly.

You see, if I take somebody on the squad,

I gotta throw somebody off the squad. [CHUCKLES]

Uh, the big man there is the only rookie... [CHUCKLES] ...we got.

Wait a second, Coach. You can't cut me!

RED: Simmer down, will you? I'm not gonna cut you.

That's for you and Kane to decide, who stays, who goes.

Tomorrow.

All right, you clowns, take a shower.

A long one.

Sky?

Don't give up on yourself.

Come on.

TED: I've done a lot of thinking in the past hour, Mr. Roarke.

My love for her, and her love for me.

Our future together.

Till now, I've had to fight a shadow, a ghost.

But all that's changed now.

What do you intend to do?

Go back and fight for the woman I love.

Most commendable, Mr. Kingman.

But remember this, beyond action,

one also needs a very special kind of understanding.

An understanding that all things or people

are not necessarily as they may seem.

And that change is inevitable,

even as it was in the Garden of Eden.

Well, I don't want to win by some kind of default,

Mr. Roarke, if that's what you're saying.

I want to win because she loves me.

That is not what I was saying, Mr. Kingman.

Go, fight for your woman. Fight for her.

But do so with understanding...

and true love.

For she will need them both.

I have the feeling you're trying to tell me something,

and I'm missing it. That I don't understand.

But you will, Mr. Kingman, you will.

I promise you.

Thank you.

What did you think of my playing today?

It was even better than I was with you, wasn't it?

Yes, Matt, you should be very pleased with yourself.

I didn't do it for myself, I did it for you.

I wanted to show you I could make it in your world,

'cause I love you.

But, Matt, why didn't you ever say that before?

[SCOFFS] You would have laughed in my face.

No, first I would have had to stand in a chair,

then you would have laughed in my face.

I mean, those guys you hang out with are giraffes.

What would you want with a yappy

little Schnauzer like me?

Matt, remember the times we talked about art,

music, and poetry while the team was on the road?

Why do you think I did that?

You were probably lonely, so, you had to put up with me.

Well, I can play with the big boys now,

so, you won't have to make allowances anymore.

Ginger, I want to marry you.

You know...

for a smart man, you don't understand anything.

Not about yourself,

and definitely not about me or the way I am.

Oh, Matt.

Ginger?

Ginger, I love you!

Why do you keep walking away from me?

[♪♪♪♪♪]

JOHNNY: Hey...

Whoa-ho!

[WOMEN CHUCKLING]

[♪♪♪♪♪♪]

WOMAN: Whoo!

JOHNNY: Whoo-hoo!

[LAUGHING]

[WOMEN CHEERING]

Whoo-hoo! [LAUGHS]

Johnny, please. Can't we talk now?

Of course we'll talk. This party's for us, sweetheart.

These are my friends. Enjoy yourself, come on.

No, I-- I don't want any.

[CHUCKLES] Come on, follow me, let's go.

-No. -Come on, come on!

-Come on, come on. -No, I don't want to.

JOHN: Do-do-do-do-do-do. Just follow me, honey,

-and let yourself go. -[HELEN GROANS]

-I-- I can't. I don't know how. -Then I'll teach you. Come on.

Johnny, please. This isn't for us.

JOHNNY: It's what I want.

It's the life I've chosen. Do you understand?

It is my life.

[WOMEN CHUCKLING]

[♪♪♪♪♪]

MATT: What went wrong?

Nothing went wrong, Mr. Kane.

Your fantasy's proceeding in a totally predictable manner.

Wrong. I don't love basketball.

I love Ginger Donovan!

Now I probably lost her to some jock like Skyhook Skylar.

I bet she's been crazy about him all along.

You know, it's odd that you should mention Mr. Skylar.

He happens to be visiting Tattoo at this very moment.

TATTOO: Look, Sky.

And that make us very, very special, see?

I've got nothing to say to him.

I don't want you to talk. I want you to listen.

Not as a reporter waiting to hear a quotable remark.

This time I want you to listen with your heart, Mr. Kane.

SKYLAR: You sure that canvas is big enough

to get all of me on it?

No sweat. The hardest part is to put your soul into it.

But that's what an artist have to do.

Yeah, I guess soul's important, all right.

But I'm more concerned with playing basketball

the best that I can.

Basketball players and painters have special gift.

And if you don't have a soul, you cannot make it.

So, the bottom line is,

you have to know who you are as a person, see?

Yeah, I was just never too thrilled at who I am.

I mean, that's why being a-- a--

a star athlete is so important to me.

It makes me more than who I am.

TATTOO: Like the boss say,

"We should love ourselves, because God is in each of us."

And that's why we are very, very special person, see?

You have to believe in yourself.

I've been a fool.

If Ginger could love me,

it's gotta be for the me behind the typewriter,

not the basketball whiz I've been trying to be.

Anything else would be a lie.

She'd be better off with Skylar.

You still assume she loves him because he's tall and athletic.

[CHUCKLES]

Well, Mr. Kane, you are not the first man

to refuse to accept the truth...

because he cannot accept himself.

I know what I have to do.

Thank you, Mr. Roarke.

[DOOR OPENS, CLOSES]

-[KNOCKING] -HELEN: Just a minute.

Forgive me for intruding so late, Miss Ross.

Oh, it's all right.

-Come in, Mr. Roarke. -Thank you.

I wanted to see you before Mr. Kingman arrives.

He's on his way here now by boat.

Ted? No, no, please! I can't see him! Not yet.

You are obviously distressed.

[SOBS]

Hasn't your fantasy gone as you expected?

Oh, Mr. Roarke, if you only knew.

You have found that there have, indeed, been changes, huh?

Changes? Yes.

So many things I don't understand.

So many answers I want from Johnny,

and he won't even explain, he won't even talk to me.

Well, what would you have him talk about, Miss Ross?

Of young and romantic love?

Of love which comes at first sight between strangers?

Love which is love for its own sake?

Quick and easy, without question or judgment?

-Is that wrong? -No.

But that kind of love is so primitive, Miss Ross.

That is the love that was shared by the creatures of the woods

and the jungles, when the world was young.

In the days when man found the soul a troublesome thing.

Something to be... ignored, suppressed.

-Soul? -Oh, of course.

Love, to endure, must also have a soul.

An essence, a reality.

I've kept our love alive,

very real, all of these years.

Perhaps you have sustained only a tender memory

of a wonderful... although primitive, moment.

But only a moment, after all.

No, it was fate that separated us and cheated us.

Our love would have grown together.

I'm sure of it.

The tragedy of such love...

love of passion only...

is not separation.

Or even death, Miss Ross.

It is time.

And time can bring indifference. That is a tragedy.

But indifference is something you will never

suffer with Mr. Kingman.

I've been thinking a lot about Ted...

this evening, and...

Don't you see?

If I don't get these questions answered

and talk to Johnny, no matter what the answer is,

nothing will ever be right for us.

Then...

you must, indeed, talk to him.

Do you think you could find him before Ted gets here?

I will send Captain Day to you in the morning.

He will meet you, uh, in the bar next door.

-Thank you. -You're welcome.

-Good night, Miss Ross. -Good night.

Hello, Johnny.

Boy, do I need a pick-me-up.

[CHUCKLES]

[JOHNNY EXHALES]

[SIGHS]

There, that's better.

What do you see, sweetheart?

A God-like youth that used to be?

Ah, wasn't there a poet or somebody that said, uh,

"Man is actually a God in ruins?"

[SCOFFS] He must have had me in mind.

Johnny...

all those questions I wanted you to answer and...

all those things that I wanted to talk out.

May-- maybe I was wrong about that.

I don't mind talking.

Maybe they're just not all that important.

Oh...

Maybe not today, maybe not even tomorrow,

but sooner or later, every woman I've ever known

wants to know the truth, the whole truth,

and nothing but the truth, so help her God.

Okay, now you said you wanted to know the truth.

Well, why not?

Why not?

Why not start from the beginning?

That so-called mission.

You know what really happened?

I deserted, baby.

I chickened out.

Some people call it being a coward.

And I've been on the run ever since.

That's why I'm hiding out

in a backwater dump, like this island.

All I ever really cared about was that you loved me.

No, I'm just not getting through to you, am I?

Don't you hear what I'm trying to say, Helen?

No, you'll have to make it very clear to me, Johnny!

-Okay, I guess I owe you that. -Yes!

You asked me a question yesterday,

"Why didn't I try to find you?" Remember?

-Yes. -The reason was simple enough.

I didn't want to!

Why not?

I'm just not the kind of a guy who ever made a commitment.

Not to himself, not to his country, and not to you.

Johnny, everybody makes a commitment

to something or somebody, sometime.

Oh, yeah, in a way, yeah, sure.

I made mine to a fast buck.

Women, in general. You know what I mean.

For a while, I kidded myself that what I couldn't take

was seeing the woman I love getting old.

But I knew that wasn't the real reason.

What is the real reason?

I just didn't want the experience of looking at her.

Even you, Helen. Knowing that this woman

I once couldn't bear out of my sight

just didn't matter to me anymore.

That I didn't give a damn whether I ever saw her again.

And that's the real... [SIGHS]

...truth.

Sorry, sweetheart.

Well...

Thank you.

At last.

[BASKETBALL THUMPING]

Kane! Come on, let's do it.

Be right there. I have to put on my shoes.

Now, listen, I know how much this means to both you guys,

so, I told the rest of the team to stay in the locker room

till we make a decision, hmm?

Okay, big man, take it out whenever you're ready.

Good luck, Sky, you're a great player,

and you got a brilliant career in the league.

Good luck to you, too, Mr. Kane.

MATT: Ugh!

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

Hey, wait a minute. What's goin' on here, anyway?

What, are you doggin' it, Kane?

Where are all those fancy moves

you were layin' on everybody yesterday?

Fresh out of moves, Red.

What you see is all there is.

Sky's the man you want.

I don't need charity, Kane,

if that's what this is all about.

It's not charity, Sky.

It's called tellin' it like it is.

I wrote it up and taped it for my next TV show.

Look and listen.

Dateline, Kane's Corner.

The shortest career in NBA just came to an unlamented halt

when yours truly, Matthew Kane,

was beaten out for a starting berth

on the Top Hatters by Al "Skyhook" Skylar.

Although Kane had a few nifty moves,

Skylar really had the qualities the game needs...

Talent, class, and a heart bigger than his contract.

Also, Skylar has guts, a commodity Kane lacks...

or he would have long ago pulled himself up

to his full height, five two and one quarter,

and told one Ginger Donovan

that he sees her face in his every thought,

and that he's had the audacity to love her

even though they're worlds apart.

GINGER: Matt, wait!

Matt, don't you know that's all I ever wanted to hear?

It's not about basketball and height and all that stuff.

Just that you needed me, that you wanted me.

You must hurry, Captain.

I don't know how you managed to get here

ahead of me, Mr. Roarke.

I'm sorry, but I have to do this my own way.

If you want Helen, you're gonna to have to fight for her,

Captain, starting right now.

Mr. Kingman, please.

I'm not very good at this sort of thing,

so, you'll probably take me apart, but...

-[JOHN GRUNTS] -No, that's enough!

That's enough! That's enough.

Now...

So, that we all understand what this is all about...

listen to me.

At first, I thank you all for accepting your roles

and playing them so well, without question.

But it would be unfair for you not to know the truth.

Especially you, Mr. Kingman.

Eight years ago, Captain John Day

deserted a military mission

and stole a great deal of money from a foreign power.

A guard was killed, and Captain Day was caught.

He's serving a life sentence without chance of parole.

But he's here. How can that be?

I have certain influence, Mr. Kingman.

When I told Captain Day of Miss Ross's fantasy,

he agreed to cooperate,

and I arranged for a weekend of freedom.

To do what?

To set a woman free, Mr. Kingman.

To convince Miss Ross that the romance she has clung to

is in itself merely a fantasy created in her mind

by time and mystery...

and an unkind fate.

Captain Day and my friends here...

have acted out a drama

upon which the final curtain has fallen.

Captain Day has just sent away forever

the only woman he has ever loved.

You pack a pretty good punch.

Good luck.

[♪♪♪♪♪]

We can't thank you both enough, Mr. Roarke, Tattoo.

We'll never forget what you've done for us.

-Thank you. -Never.

-Bye. -Goodbye.

-Bye, thanks! -Bye.

Ah, Mr. Roarke, I wanna thank you.

Can't tell you what these, uh, tropical breezes

have done for the benefit of the team.

Well, I'm delighted.

Nothing did as good as the talks I had with Tattoo.

-Thanks, little buddy. -You're welcome.

-[CHUCKLES] Come on, big man. -Goodbye.

[WOMEN GIGGLING]

You seem very pleased, my friend.

You know, boss, once in a while,

it's very nice to find out what-- what a big man I am.

Indeed.

MATT: Bye.

-Miss Ross. -Thank you.

-Mr. Kingman. -Leaving so soon?

We have a lot of wedding plans to complete, Tattoo.

Indeed? Well, my heartiest congratulations to you both.

Thank you.

You knew this would happen all the time,

didn't you, Mr. Roarke?

I remember your little speech about wisdom,

faith, and courage.

-And happiness. -Ah, yes.

Happiness above all. Thank you.

Goodbye, Tattoo. [CHUCKLES]

-TED: Thank you. -Bye, Mr. Kingman.

[WOMEN GIGGLING]

Boss, Miss Ross will never know the truth

about Captain Day, will she, boss?

No, no, Tattoo.

Except a very special kind of truth.

Perhaps a truth that gives without taking.

A truth that will bless every remaining day of her life.

That sounds more like love to me.

How wise you have become, my friend.

How wise, indeed.
