Definitely my nerves.
I was a very nervous kid coming into this competition.

When I was growing up as a kid,

I just wanted to not socialize,
just stay in my room, that was it.
It was a very terrifying time in my life

with girlfriend and returning contestant Margie Mays.

Now in Hawaii, it's the first time Jonny

My dad's a fireman and my mom's a teacher,

Growing up, my best friends ‐‐ they were all super athletic,
and I have never been like that.

and taught myself how to play.

Steve: The first time I realized that he was really talented
was one of the nights we went to the high school
for a performance, and you just see people
were kind of like, "Wow," you know?

When I graduated high school, I was like,
"That part of my life was fun, but that's over,"
and I looked into truck driving.
I was like, "I want to see the country,
and I can do that by driving a truck, I guess."
My dad and my mom were both like, "What are you doing?"
Like, "You don't want to do this.
You want to do music."
And I just realized, like, how much they had been
paying attention, and that was huge.
We're so proud of you, Jonny.
I know it's a tough industry.
There's so much talent out there.

But I know about passion,
and he is about being a musician.

The last five years of my life, I've been sleeping
on friends' couches, finding myself in the streets,
