Nobunaga was born the son of an Owari magistrate.

First he won battles within Owari and unified it.

Next he penetrated into Mino and joined forces with them.

Meanwhile in Kyoto, the shogun was assassinated.

So Nobunaga accompanied the new shogun to Kyoto.

He then gained control of Sakai, Kusatsu, and Otsu.

While expanding his power in the capital, he fought the Ikko Sect,

and overthrew Omi's Asai Nagamasa and Echizen's Asakura Yoshikage.

He then continued to battle with the shogun...

until he overthrew the Ashikaga Shogunate.

Nobunaga was now supreme ruler and Kyoto fell under him.

In addition, Ise, Yamato, Izumi, Settsu, Ishiyama Hongwanji, Tanba,

Tango, Harima, Tajima, Hida, Etchu, Kaga, and Noto were suppressed.

No army now dared to challenge Nobunaga's army.

But, in Azuchi he had already begun his next strategy.

That was to unify all of Japan.

Nobunaga

Father Valignano will remain in Azuchi awhile,

but I will be leaving for Echizen.

You're leaving for Echizen?

Yes.

This is the best dried persimmon in Japan.

Delicious.

Will you return here from Echizen?

No, I will head to Kyushu from Echizen.

I see.

There is much work to be done in Kyushu.

Shibata Katsuie is in Echizen.

Take a letter from me to him.

I am very grateful.

Then we may next meet in Kyushu.

Yes.

We have known each other for many years.

Yes, it's been twelve years since our first meeting.

That's right, isn't it?

That was 12 years ago on April 3 in 1569.

It was 12 years ago today at the Nijo Castle construction site.

Is that why you summoned me here today?

That's correct.

Thank you.

I'll be frank with you. You were the first foreigner I had met.

I didn't know how to react to you.

I remember something frightening, too.

I may have looked that way.

Just before I met you, I beheaded a man.

I also saw it.

You must have thought I was like a devil.

Yes.

Well, I haven't changed.

I will never reach for God to be saved.

You can't say that.

I know what I've done.

I've murdered, burnt towns, and will continue fighting until I unify Japan.

Religion is sacred and should be kept on the side.

That's how I feel about it.

Your Majesty is very critical of yourself and others.

However, that should not be your only understanding.

Oh, and why not?

Because Your Majesty is viewed by another.

That completes your understanding.

Would that view be your God?

No, not necessarily.

For example, if you saw yourself from heaven above,

you might perceive yourself differently.

I would look ugly and scum-like.

But, that's not a hard view to take.

People tend to emphasize their bad points.

So they seek religion.

I refuse to take that path.

I only see the good in myself.

Doing that without the help of a religion is hard.

But, I like to take the difficult roads.

You may meet up with Deus on that road.

Would I?

Today is the day I bid you farewell.

Can I talk about Deus just a little?

Just once, please listen.

Sure.

Reporting.

Sir Hashiba Chikuzen-no-kami is here.

Oh, is Hideyoshi here?

It's so hectic here. I'll hear it another day.

Yes.

Have a safe trip to Echizen.

Yes.

Then I have to leave you here.

Yes.

Nobunaga promised to meet again, but now reminiscing,

that was the last time we met.

Hideyoshi, what's wrong?

Don't overdo it. You don't seem sincere.

That's not the case.

I'm just flabbergasted.

This is a gold-laden heaven.

Konishi Yukinaga...

Don't be in a daze!

You will never be able to see this again.

Tell His Majesty how amazed you are.

Silence.

You are a Christian.

Did you know this world was round?

No...

It's the shape of a dumpling.

Is that so?

So it's not a Christian teaching that the world is round?

Your Majesty, is the world round?

That's right. It's like a ball.

Like a ball?

Never mind. I called you for something else.

Invade Inaba and overthrow Tottori Castle.

Yes, Your Majesty.

First, get the Mori out of the Sanin area.

Then, invade the Sanyo-do provinces from the west.

Yes.

The provincial lords of Iga and Kai's Takeda army must be destroyed.

Before that, we must overthrow Tottori Castle...

so we can invade westward at any time.

First the Sanyo-do provinces, then Shikoku and Kyushu.

I'll send over as many soldiers as you need.

You are the Chief Commander of the west.

I am very honored!

Akechi Mitsuhide oversees four castles.

You still have only two.

Unless you work harder, Mitsuhide will surpass you.

I won't lose to Akechi!

Tango was overseen by Hosokawa Fujitaka...

and his son Tadaoki ruled Miyazu Castle.

Tadaoki's wife was Otama, daughter of Mitsuhide,

who would later be known as Hosokawa Garcia.

Yah, I envy you living here in Miyazu.

Ama Bridge lies right before your eyes.

It's a luxury to live like this every day.

Stay as long as you wish. Otama will be happy.

Tadaoki, Sir Akechi is one of the great Oda commanders.

He can't be wasting his time away here.

He barely has time to even visit this time.

I am overjoyed that he has invited me.

I wish I could stay and view the Ama Bridge...

and spend the rest of my days composing poetry.

I apologize for being late.

Lady Otama...

Yes.

It's been awhile since you saw your father.

Yes.

After your duties are done, spend some time with your father.

I am fine.

You don't need to be concerned about it.

Otama is a good daughter-in-law.

She is also kind.

It seems like His Majesty has been changing recently.

He expelled Sir Hayashi, Sir Sakuma, and Sir Ando,

and now proclaims himself the deity of Sokenji.

I also heard he orders the Imperial Court around.

Hopefully there won't be an uprising.

I have also worried about that.

If anything should happen to the lord now,

there will be much turmoil and bloodshed.

You are one of his foremost commanders.

Please don't let that happen.

Also, you need to look after yourself.

You are not a hereditary vassal of the Oda.

When everything is going fine, you are fine.

But, if you should fail, there will be backstabbers.

Yah, I would rather have some time to rest.

Even if Japan can be stabilized,

I can't see myself in battles for decades.

I feel a deep fatigue.

You have been working too hard.

If you work too hard, your health will suffer.

I will try to rest.

I got this from a seminary in Azuchi.

I thought you might like it.

Thank you.

This is called "Dochirina," a text for Christians.

You seem to have known about it.

Yes.

Have you become a Christian?

No, I am just reading whatever I can find.

Has Tadaoki said anything?

Since His Majesty respects the bateren,

becoming a Christian would be an honor.

I see...

Until now, I have heard about Christianity three times...

from Christians within our domain.

I have memorized the Ten Commandments.

Commandments?

Yes, commandments that Christians must obey.

They are referred to as the Ten Commandments.

If one fails to obey, they fall into Hell.

If that's the case, I am lost.

The Lord says, "Respect your father and mother;

"Do not commit murder; do not steal;

"Do not lie; do not desire another man's possession;" and others.

That's really difficult.

I can't become a Christian.

Why is that?

In battle, I must kill men.

That's how I am promoted.

While I don't steal, I usurp domains.

I also make false accusations.

I'm not fit to be a Christian.

Don't have such a sad face.

I am now overseeing Tango and Omi-Shiga,

but someday I will have my own territory like Lord Tokugawa.

Then, I won't have to run around the country.

I must work hard until then, so that day will come.

After I left for Echizen, Father Valignano left Azuchi for Sakai...

so he could observe things there.

Lorenso...

Yes.

Tell the bateren that if he likes Azuchi he is welcome to come again.

Yes.

Thank you very much. I am grateful for your gracious hospitality.

I will never forget my days in Azuchi.

Don't be worried about the Jesuits in Japan.

You are free to build and preach anywhere in Japan.

All of Japan knows about my interest in your religion.

We are honored. It encourages us greatly.

This huge castle and beauty represents Your Majesty's power.

Actually, I marvel at your country.

The Japanese are intelligent, proper, and clean.

They are superior to the Europeans.

Thus, if some Japanese could be sent over to Europe,

the Roman Papal Court and Europeans can see them.

What are your thoughts?

That is a good idea. Japan is surrounded by seas,

but we don't have large ships to go afar.

So we still don't know anything about Europe.

I really want our people to see this Europe.

We will begin preparations then.

By the way, give Sotello to me.

In return, I will give you anything you want.

Is there anything you desire?

Your Majesty's kindness is more than I could ever want.

I won't let you leave Azuchi empty-handed.

Let me give you one of my favorite things.

Yes.

Bring in the screen.

This is it.

Open it up.

From summer through autumn Hideyoshi attacked Tottori Castle.

The Niwa and Takigawa armies left to subjugate Iga.

Tokugawa Ieyasu invaded Takeda's final castle, Takatenjin Castle,

and completely took over the province of Totomi.

How is business?

Your Majesty's influence has made business prosper.

At this rate, the checkpoints will disappear,

and roads will be improved to quicken the transport of goods.

I have come to realize that these days guns and gunpowder...

have helped our businesses thrive,

but there was much danger and waste attached.

Business in peacetime is far more profitable.

But, the battles will continue a while longer.

What's important is that there is peace in the capital.

It will only take a few more years.

Next year I will be 49.

I would like to stabilize all of Japan by 50.

Then there won't be any battles in Japan.

I would like that very much. It is like a dream.

I will bring together the 66 domains as one.

You will bring the businesses together.

Yes.

Not just for Japan, but the countries beyond the ocean, too.

We will build large ships and take armies across.

If we can overthrow them, we will be well known...

and your business will prosper even more.

It will bring me much joy.

This world is round.

We could head west and pass China, Europe, Asia, and then Japan.

Everything is so confusing.

What we consider new, may be old in their country.

If there is no east or west,

then there is no north and south.

If there is no heaven to the west,

then there should be no hell.

Perhaps there is no good or evil...

Your Majesty...

I cannot comprehend.

We can only move forward.

Then, let me take you to the top floor.

Before that, I want to talk to you about your wife.

She made me promise not to tell you this,

but she is not well.

We suggested that she return to you.

Is it serious?

No. It is not a life or death matter.

She has spent a long time in Sakai.

She must just be tired.

So many visitors came to Azuchi at New Year's to worship at Sokenji,

that even deaths occurred.

Nobunaga had accomplished his goal.

In the meantime, Hideyoshi captured Tottori Castle and suppressed Inaba.

Four youths left Nagasaki and headed for Europe with Father Valignano.

They would pay respects to the Roman Papal Court.

Gifu Castle lord Akita Jyonosuke Nobutada.

Sakamoto Castle lord Koreto Hyuga-no-kami.

Ise-Nagashima Castle lord Takiyama Sakon Kazumasu.

Miyazu Castle lord Hosokawa Fjuitaka.

Iwamura Castle lord Kawajiri Hidetaka.

We will attack Kai's Takeda.

Kiso Yoshimasa has become our ally,

and will lead the way.

We leave for Kai immediately.

With Kai gone, there will be no foes to the west.

Then we can all invade Mori together.

We will all invade all the way to Kyushu.

Mitsuhide...

You seem tired.

No, not at all.

You've lost the sparkle in your eyes.

Forgive me. But, I am not tired.

You've been fighting without ample rest.

But, you can't rest until Japan is stabilized.

The commander of the army will be Nobutada.

Nobutada, you enter through Ina.

Kanemori from Hida and Tokugawa through Suruga.

And then Hojo Ujimasa will enter from Kanto.

If there are any objections speak up.

If not, that is the strategy.

Now Hideyoshi is preparing to attack the Mori.

The sooner we overthrow Kai, the sooner Japan will be stabilized.

Hurry.

The Oda army commander was Nobunaga's son Nobutada.

Nobunaga gradually avoided the battlefield.

Perhaps he was afraid of dying.

Or, perhaps he needed to maintain his role as deity of Sokenji.

Or, maybe it was his age of 49 creeping up on him.

I wish to speak.

Your wife has returned.

I'm glad you are back.

What's wrong?

Now that I'm back, I feel Sakai never happened.

Get some rest first.

I am fine.

Your stubbornness hasn't changed.

No, I just don't know what to say.

I'm at a loss for words.

Don't think about it.

Reporting. The preparations are done.

I'm going to overthrow Kai now.

Actually, the battle is over.

I just want to see what Kai looks like. Mt. Fuji, too.

Have a good rest.

Kai's Lord Takeda Katsuyori was able to maintain...

his father's army after his death,

but after losing the Battle of Nagashino,

his vassals began betraying him.

Such was the case with this last battle.

Mother, are you injured?

I'm okay.

Let's hurry. The enemy is close.

Damn Nobunaga!

The enemy is close by!

Find them so they can't escape!

I'll go first.

Father. Mother. Farewell!

We found the Takeda commander!

To think this would be the last of the Takeda.

Someone!

Check to see if this is really Takeda Katsuyori!

Such was the way the Takeda were destroyed.

Then, Nobunaga headed west with his entire army.

So everybody, until next time...

To be continued.

To be continued.
