Thirty years after Saint Xavier arrived in Japan...
Father Alexander Valegnani arrived in Japan.
He had come to observe the progress,
but eventually had tremendous impact on their missionary work.
He decided the overall organizational policies,
finances, and education.
It was he that established the seminary.
Students were selected from children of daimyo and upper warriors,
and were required to live in a dorm.
Schedules were set from 4:30 am to 8:00 pm.
Here they learned about Christianity, alphabets,
Japanese writing and reading, Latin syntax,
morality, music, and choir singing.
It was this man that sent a youth envoy to Rome...
and introduced the printer to Japan.
Nobunaga welcomed the missionaries.
One reason was because they seemed honest.
The other was because they had no political interests.
Nobunaga

Nobunaga was relieved after he destroyed the Ikko Sect.
So he invited the Emperor to outside his East Gate...
and had a grand procession of his Oda horse troops.
After that Nobunaga returned to Azuchi Castle,
and stayed there until his death at Honnoji Temple...
a year and three months later.
Meanwhile, he supported the construction of a magnificent seminary in Azuchi.
Naturally, Father Organtino became its head.
Father Francisco was appointed as head of Kyoto's overseer.
Let's interpret this conversation into Japanese.
In order to spread Christianity throughout Japan,
we need to start from the capital.
The capital sets the pace for the rest of Japan.
I have a special request of all of you.
We must bear in mind that we are in Japan.
We are working with Japanese.
Thus, Christianity must be tailored to their needs.
Their culture and customs are different from Europe.
We will make adjustments in our lives.
I haven't been in Japan very long,
but I know the people in this country are very intelligent...
and their culture surpasses our European culture.
Let us be grateful that Deus has led us here.
Only the Jesuit Society has made it in this country.
Nobunaga, who is feared as the demon himself,
has become our strongest ally.
Those who don't appreciate true beauty see cleaning just as a chore.
Such people do not belong here in Azuchi.
Tell them they are expelled.
Did you want to talk with me?
I heard you became the Minister of the Left.
I haven't received that title yet.
Who told you that?
I was just offered the title.
Then it is just as good as yours.
No, I said I would accept it when Prince Sanehito becomes Emperor.
It's too early for this.
It's disappointing, isn't it?
It doesn't matter. It's just a title.
But, it brings honor to the Oda family.
I will get it eventually.
I can't wait to see you as Prime Minister.
Ah, I've wanted to ask you something.
I heard you expelled Hayashi and Sakuma.
Yes, there were some problems.
What is it? Did they plan to revolt?
No. They became lazy and inattentive to duties.
Is that so? I suppose you know what you're doing,
but those men served the Oda for many years.
I feel for them.
You shouldn't feel for them.
They tainted military standards and were quick to personal greed.
I understand.
Mother, you don't understand!
I know your thinking wasn't wrong.
Mother! What are you afraid of?
Say what's on your mind.
He knows everyone fears his fits of anger.
You shouldn't allow such willfulness.
What are you saying? Hurry and return to Ise.
I will remain near your side all my life.
You just charged in here!
I'll send you back to Ise.
And I will return as many times here.
Left alone, you'll continue to commit crimes.
Stop it. Return to Ise.
Your words are insulting to your brother.
Now return to Ise.
Even Mother agrees. So, return tomorrow.
Mother, rejoice.
He ordered people to worship him as a deity...
just as an excuse to attract people here.
Mother's prayers have been answered by heaven.
I'm glad.
Oichi!
Who told you what you were saying?
It's just a rumor.
I asked you who you heard that from!
It's just my thoughts.
Though you are my sister, don't take me lightly.
I said that to reassure our mother.
Ever since you passed the decree to worship you,
Mother has feared that you would be punished by heaven.
So I told her it was just an excuse.
Mother is old. Don't cause her more worries.
Before that, tell me who told you this.
She is also troubled about you expelling Sakuma and Hayashi.
How much more do you have to make her suffer?
Do you find that amusing?
Come here.
You must think that by verbally abusing me,
you are avenging your husband, Nagamasa.
Nagamasa was the worst traitor in Japan,
so I just took matters into my own hands.
I don't regret killing that man.
You could never hit me.
If you hate me so much, kill me.
Avenge Nagamasa's death by killing me.
Now, stab me.
They say a man's life is 50 years.
I'm now 48 and will give up my last two years.
Kill me for that fool Nagamasa.
Then you will know how stupid Nagamasa was.
Now, stab me.
Why do you believe what others say?
How could a woman like you kill me?
Since I was a child I have fought in battles...
and lived through many close deaths till now.
Have you forgotten that I lived among betrayals?
I tossed them aside to get where I am today.
How do you see my 48 years of life?
I did it all for the sake of the Oda.
All for Mother and for you.
Yet, you prefer Nagamasa alive and me beheaded?
Don't trust my words either.
They are meaningless.
Kill me if you want.
Summon Zuiten.
Reporting. Zuiten is here.
Your Majesty. I feel ashamed of this appearance.
Your leg still hurts?
Yes, it seems to get worse.
Now I can't even bend it.
This is all so strange. It hurts!
Don't worry about how you're sitting.
Okay, forgive me.
However, it has been hurting much too long.
Are you sure a bone isn't broken?
My bones are fine!
Does this hurt?
Yes.
Show it to me.
I wouldn't think of it. That can't be done.
Ranmaru, Bomaru... Come closer.
Your Majesty, please save me from this embarrassment.
Until I see the wound, I won't know.
I'm fine. I've shown the doctor.
I'll look at it. Take off the bandage.
By the way, Zuiten...
Have you told anyone about me and Sokenji?
Huh?
You know, that secret we talked about.
You mean about the deity?
That's right.
As I promised, I haven't told anyone.
Oichi knew.
Oichi knew about it?
She said she heard a rumor.
Did she say that?
Be honest. Didn't you tell somebody?
Your Majesty, I never did! Please believe me.
You were the only one who knew.
But, I never told anyone.
Besides, there isn't anyone I can tell.
Even if you betrayed me, I won't get angry.
I told you the story expecting this to happen.
But, if she just said it, that means she read my thoughts.
Then that is odd.
It's your blood ties.
What is it?
Zuiten...
Your leg has rotted.
Don't jest, Your Majesty.
Ranmaru...
Yes.
Cut this leg off.
Please save me from that. It's not rotten.
Unless you cut it off, you will die.
Touch it for yourself.
This is indeed rotting from the foot.
Submit to your fate.
I gave my life to the Oda.
Why did this happen to me?
Unless you get rid of the old, there is no place for the new.
I don't know what was seen as new to Lord Nobunaga,
but for me Japan was new.
Look up.
I am proud of you all.
Follow Bateren's teachings and learn what you need as best you can.
Have the right heart and get rid of evil.
Next, learn much about the many countries across the sea from Japan.
Then you will be useful for the new world to come.
Do you understand?
Yes.
I thank you for your kind words.
Then, I will have the students pay their respects to Your Majesty.
First in Latin.
Antonio...
Yes.
Simone, translate that into Japanese for His Majesty.
Yes, let me do so.
We would like to thank you from our hearts for your visit here today.
We will study hard and make this a better world.
You did well.
Today I am encouraged from seeing your school.
I will reward you all later.
We are grateful.
I thought the interior would be foreign.
I didn't expect to see a tea ceremony room.
We think Christianity should blend into Japan.
We built it for those who visit our church.
Frois, who taught you the tea ceremony?
Many. Hibiya Ryokei, Takayama Hida-no-kami, and Wada Koremasa.
By the way, how are things in Kyushu?
There are many battles and it's less prosperous than Kyoto or Azuchi.
I hope to see a day without any battles.
Someday I will see to that.
You will go all the way south to Kyushu?
Unless we pacify all 66 provinces,
we won't have another town like Azuchi.
Yes.
I promise you. It will be soon.
Just bear it for awhile longer.
I am so glad to hear this.
Your Majesty, I have one favor to ask.
Anything you want.
Padre Valegnani was sent from Portugal...
to come to Japan as a Jesuit representative.
He would like to visit Japan's king, the Emperor,
and pay his respects to him.
That's not necessary.
If he has a request, tell him to ask me.
I am the one who controls Japan.
Requesting anything from the Emperor is useless.
Yes.
Lorenso...
Yes?
Explain this well to the baterens later.
I, Oda Nobunaga, am now the supreme ruler of the country.
Nothing happens without my approval.
It doesn't matter even if the Emperor wants it.
And one more thing...
Yes?
I am grateful to the baterens.
I want them to continue guiding the Japanese in the right direction.
I will support them as much as I can.
Yes. We are honored.
I will explain this to them later.
Later I will send you my thoughts in writing.
This was the first time I saw the real Nobunaga.
Lord Nobunaga wanted to be at the very top all by himself.
He became deity of Sokenji to secure a position as one of the gods.
Such willfulness was the work of the devil.
I wished I could save Nobunaga.
Your Majesty, look at my appearance.
Disappear! You are bad luck!
Soon thereafter, a bad rumor was heard.
Nobunaga, in a fit of anger, killed his ladies-in-waiting.
The devil made him do it.
Echizen, Kita-no-sho Castle
This doesn't sound right.
When he returned to his castle, the ladies had gone to the temple.
He was angry and killed every one of them.
He expelled Sir Hayashi and Sir Sakuma...
and this thing about Sokenji seems strange.
Has the lord changed?
He has nothing to fear.
Not having anything to fear may have changed him.
He doesn't have anyone to talk to now either.
Why did he leave Hideyoshi and Akechi near him...
and put you and me so far away?
Hideyoshi and Akechi were not Oda clan members to begin with.
They just appeared one day and became part of us.
Rather than thinking about His Majesty,
they are more concerned about their own success.
How can they be good moral support for His Majesty?!
But, His Majesty is very proud of their accomplishments.
When I reported that I had stabilized Kaga,
His Majesty said that I stood up to outdo them.
Do you think I would compete with Hideyoshi and Akechi?
That's absurd!
His Majesty cannot understand that.
He believes invading domains is loyalty.
Perhaps Hayashi and Sakuma were wrong, but their wrong...
can't compare with their loyalty and love for His Majesty.
Yet he expelled them!
Perhaps we should go together and tell His Majesty.
I've thought of that many times.
But, here is how he would interpret it.
That we are jealous of Hideyoshi and Akechi.
So, do we just twiddle our thumbs?
What else can we do?!
What are Niwa and Tsuneoki doing?
I will even go by myself to speak my mind.
I will ask His Majesty to reconsider his decision on Hayashi and Sakuma!
Wait awhile longer.
I'll ask the main vassals their thoughts sometime soon and then speak.
It's the duty of us senior leaders.
Perhaps His Majesty may lend us a willing ear.
But, to proclaim himself God...
This is beautiful.
I've never seen a castle this tall in Japan.
It is indeed the best in Japan.
Have a seat.
Yes.
Have a drink.
Have you started drinking sake?
No, but I haven't seen you for awhile.
I will have just one sip.
Saude.
May you always be in good health.
How do you say that in Portuguese?
Saude.
Saude?
Yes, saude.
Saude.
It's saude, isn't it?
Yes, saude.
In Japanese it means to your good health?
Yes.
It's a nice word.
In Japan, we say "Wine makes good blood."
Yes, and is the best of all medicines.
Oh, you know very well.
I study about Japan every day.
You don't seem to have plans to go home.
That's right. I will stay here until I die.
I left Portugal when I was 15 years old.
I am now 50 years old.
A man's life is 50 years...
You know all the Japanese sayings.
Perhaps more than the Japanese.
A man's life is 50 years.
I have only two more years until I'm 50 years old.
We can't die yet.
There is too much left to do.
That's right. It is just the beginning.
Yes.
First I must stabilize all of Japan.
Then we can spread the teachings of Christianity.
I am really happy to hear this.
Like the church here in Azuchi, we will build churches all over Japan.
Yes.
I want Japan to be one nation.
And, I will help rebuild a new nation.
There will only be one monetary system honored in Japan...
and everyone can do business freely with one another.
There will only be one castle in each domain...
and the others will be destroyed.
I'll have my men in the castles and will oversee all of Japan from here.
That will be one step in building a new nation.
That is a great idea.
But, that's not all. It's just the first step.
After that, I want to challenge the world.
You say this world is round.
There are many countries beyond the ocean that may be awaiting me.
We can be friends or go to battle with newly discovered countries.
Like you discovered Japan, I'd like to discover a new country.
Your Majesty.
Can I ask you just one question?
What do you believe in?
Believe in?
Yes. Do you believe in anything in this world?
Yes there is.
What is that?
What I can see with my eyes and can touch.
Then, you don't believe what you can't see?
That's right.
You ordered people to worship you in Sokenji.
What is the reason for that decree?
Is that what you wanted to ask?
Yes.
I'll confide just in you. Is that okay?
Yes.
I thought I needed to be God in order to rebuild Japan.
If people believe in me, I can create a new Japan.
I am special.
Only God is special.
But people can't see Deus. They can see me.
If they can see me, they will appreciate it more.
I eliminated battles from Azuchi.
I have allowed free trade. And, it is beautiful here.
Eventually all of Japan will be like Azuchi.
This is all my power.
It would be natural for people to worship me.
That is arrogance. You will be punished.
In Japan, those who do good are not punished.
I'm one of them.
Perhaps I saw Nobunaga a little naively.
Nobunaga was always so close to me.
I had forgotten Lord Nobunaga was a pagan.
So everybody, until next time...
To be continued.
To be continued.
